4 out of 5 stars Made an excellent gift for a horror buff.......2007-06-15

I bought this for my friend for Christmas who loves the older, pre 80s era special effects movies and TV shows. This was a little before his time, to say the least, but it was a great way of seeing where we've been and how far we've come.

I'd seen only bits and pieces of these movies over the years in late night movie marathons and cable, it was one of the first opportunities I had to see the entire movie from beginning to end. These movies are funny in so many ways, as in the silent movie era a lot of these actors were made up to look cartoonish rather than scary. I'd read that for movie make up Lon Chaney Sr. (and Jr.) didn't even use make up or prothetics but taped their faces and used hooks to change their appearence. There never was a "How To" instruction book on things, they had to learn by doing.

The only bit of criticism for this is that it's quite long. Don't think that you can watch an entire disc in one sitting. A little of these movies go a long way.

3 out of 5 stars Old Horror.......2007-06-07

This is a fine, cheap package of movies if you like the old Black and White horror movies. Most are seemingly low budgetted movies, such as "Attack of the Killer Shrews" where dogs are dressed up in ratty costumes and puppets are used for close ups. I for one enjoy these types of movies.

4 out of 5 stars For the true Horror afficionado.......2007-06-02

I'm a professional writer of supernatural thrillers. My Book of Common Dread reinvented the vampire, and my The Bell Witch/An American Haunting became the movie An American Haunting with Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek. Not only does my work demand knowledge of what's out there in print and on film, but I was also born just early enough to have caught a number of the films in this collection when they first came out. In most genres, a collection of works of such low acting and production value quality would be a waste of money. But we all know most so-called horror movies are second-rate Hollywood citizens right from the get-go. How many have won Academy Awards? Some of these are fun because they're so bad. Others are interesting because they have famous directors getting their start somewhere, mystery and horror writers of skill penning the dialogue, or actors who will later become famous. An occasional diamond is found among the zirconia here, but the real reason to purchase this collection is that it is incredibly inexpensive for what you get, and you can devour the cinema equivalent of nutritionless calories (like movie popcorn) for many nights of enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars Cult movies , bad quality.......2007-05-30

All 50 movies are cult classics but the only thing bad is the sound quality, sometimes you just cant understand what the characters are talking about they should at least put subtitels, but thats not a big problem because the movies are fantastic.
It realy pays to have this movie pack!

4 out of 5 stars 50 Classic Horror Films for a Good Price.......2007-05-14

This is a nice package to own for a great price. The quality is good on most of the films. Some of the movies in this package are really good and enjoyable, and there are some that is not worth seeing a second time unless you like it. But like many others have stated this is a good bargin for this amount of movies.

I found out that there is a 100 Horror Movie Pack, and it includes most of the movies from this pack and others. Maybe that will be a good start for some of you who don't own any of the sets yet. So if you like classic horror, then you will love this 50 Movie package.

Amazon.com essential video

Edward Scissorhands achieves the nearly impossible feat of capturing the delicate flavor of a fable or fairy tale in a live-action movie. The story follows a young man named Edward (Johnny Depp), who was created by an inventor (Vincent Price, in one of his last roles) who died before he could give the poor creature a pair of human hands. Edward lives alone in a ruined Gothic castle that just happens to be perched above a pastel-colored suburb inhabited by breadwinning husbands and frustrated housewives straight out of the 1950s. One day, Peg (Dianne Wiest), the local Avon lady, comes calling. Finding Edward alone, she kindly invites him to come home with her, where she hopes to help him with his pasty complexion and those nasty nicks he's given himself with his razor-sharp fingers. Soon Edward's skill with topiary sculpture and hair design make him popular in the neighborhood--but the mood turns just as swiftly against the outsider when he starts to feel his own desires, particularly for Peg's daughter Kim (Winona Ryder). Most of director Tim Burton's movies (such as Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman) are visual spectacles with elements of fantasy, but Edward Scissorhands is more tender and personal than the others. Edward's wild black hair is much like Burton's, suggesting that the character represents the director's own feelings of estrangement and co-option. Johnny Depp, making his first successful leap from TV to film, captures Edward's childlike vulnerability even while his physical posture evokes horror icons like the vampire in Nosferatu and the sleepwalker in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Classic horror films, at their heart, feel a deep sympathy for the monsters they portray; simply and affectingly, Edward Scissorhands lays that heart bare. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie and Great Acting........2007-07-05

I had seen this movie when I was a kid and decided to revisit it after watching some of Johnny Depp's newer movies (Pirates of the Carribean, Willy Wonka etc.). Depp's performance in this movie is just as outstanding and intriguing as his other movies. His character is a machine that was turned into a human and his performance is believable. This movie is also a true Tim Burtonesque film. The imagery is quite contrasting with brightly colored homes in the community contrasting the dark and bleak mansion on the hill. This movies message is quite strong and worth showing to children and adults of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Depp is Beautiful in Leather.......2007-06-08

It would be hard for me to be critical about Johnny Depp, or even Tim Burton for that matter. I like just about all their movies. In this flick, Johnny Depp plays a tormented teen that spent all his childhood living in the haunted house on the hill, with an old dude and scissors for hands. Already he has my deepest sympathies. Falls for the girl next door,Wynona Ryder, but dosent get the girl, because the angry mob scares him off, and eddy with his scissorhands the girl next door, decide for his safety they could never be together. Go figure! As usual society wins. But it was good that it didnt end with a cheesy ending cuz that would ruin it. So definetly a must see, thats if you haven't seen it already. or u have the movie sitting with the other many Johnny Depp movies that u made a shrine out of.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-19

I loved this film. It was really sad, and this film is very touching. It also teaches you that people will always behave differently and ostracise people who are different, and even if they don't, something or someone will always go and ruin it. While the neighbours were generally accepting of him at first and even found him rather useful, the awful, nasty revolting Jim ruined it by taking advantage of him. It was a very sad story, and it had great acting. A movie to be loved by all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Alright for Science Fiction.......2007-04-23

This is an unusual film.

Great for big fans of science fiction.

I didn't get the point of this, and was a little bored.

Mr. Depp does look good in black leather, but then again so did Elvis Presley.....

5 out of 5 stars Lovedrug Matches up with Edward Scissorhands?.......2007-04-14

Hey,

I just wanted to give you the scoop that I was talking to some of the guys from the fairly popular indie rock band Lovedrug and they mentioned that their album is based on the tim burton movie Edward Scissorhands and that their music fits up to the movie perfectly. Here is the kicker though...it matches up best when the cd/ipod is on shuffle. They mentioned that you can even better the experience by turning on repeat so it plays for the whole movie. That's how perfect it is. I think the album is called everything starts where it ends.

I tried it and it did work, weirdly enough :)

Thought it was kind of cool so I wanted to share....

This silky smooth film noir pits gruff police detective Dana Andrews, stiff and blunt in his street-bred manners, against a cultured columnist and acidic wit (Clifton Webb at his prissiest) in a battle of wits during a murder investigation. The cop is a romantic hiding under a hard-boiled exterior who falls in love with the beautiful victim through the portrait that hangs in her apartment. Gene Tierney, whose heart-shaped face mixes the exotic with the girl next door, brings the poise and calm of a model to her role as the object of every man's gaze and the target of a killer. Laura, handsomely shot in dreamy black and white, is the first and best of Otto Preminger's cool, controlled murder mysteries. In the gritty world of film noir it remains the most refined and elegant example of the genre, but under the tasteful decor and high-society fashions lies a world seething in jealousy, passion, blackmail, and murder. Vincent Price costars as a blithe gigolo and David Raksin's lush theme has become a wistful romantic standard. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Nominated for five Academy Awards®, this stylish mystery thriller twists and turns with new suspects, new evidence and unexpected revelations. A wealthy journalist (Clifton Webb) becomes entranced with a beautiful young career woman named Laura (Gene Tierney). But shortly before her wedding to a dashing young playboy (Vincent Price), she is found murdered. Stirred by her portrait, the detective (Dana Andrews) assigned to her case finds that he, too, is strangely under Laura's spell.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Laura.......2007-06-25

Preminger's impeccable murder-mystery is in many ways the standard against which all other noirs tend to be judged. Eerie and smart, with lots of deliciously twisted feints and counter-feints around the central questions of murder, blackmail, and poisonous passion, "Laura" is a marvel of confounding revelations. Add to that a superb cast: Tierney, enchanting as always, as the lust object; Andrews as a cop with a weakness for beauty; Price as an effeminate rogue; Webb as a prissy critic with a viper's tongue; and Anderson as Laura's scheming, jealous aunt. Preminger's stylish touch and confident direction earned this clever, mesmerizing whodunit five Oscar nods--and movie lovers' eternal admiration.

5 out of 5 stars Orpheus in the Underworld.......2007-06-22

What makes this film endlessly watchable is the fact that "Laura" is one of the great mythological stories of the movies -- the search for the dead woman in the underworld of the past -- interwoven with the elements of film noir. Almost everything about this film is perfect (I have a sneaking doubt or two about Vincent Price), especially the completely natural way in which Laura sleeps around, has lovers in her apartment, and is a professional sleeper-upper, and no one makes the slightest negative comment about her. This in the 1940's! The best thing about the film is, as everyone says, the moment when Laura appears: the fantasy fulfillment of all fantasy fulfillments (though maybe the hat is a little much). Second best is the interrogation scene: the harsh light on Laura reminds us that this is a film about the image of woman on film. Very influential on every subsequent film with this theme -- especially Out of the Past and Vertigo. A masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Laura.......2007-06-14

This is what people are talking about when they say, "They don't make movies like this any more." Gene Tierney is luminous, Dana Andrews is tall, dark, and handsome, and the supporting cast are all creepily suspicious. Fascinating character development and witty dialogue. Timeless!

Just because Walt Disney created contemporary and traditional classics of animation doesn't mean the studio is out of ideas--not by a long shot. The Great Mouse Detective is richly animated and offers a clever tale. It may not be as easily recognized a title as Aladdin or The Little Mermaid, but all three share the same director, Ron Clements. Originally released theatrically in 1986, the mystery borrows easily from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and is based on Eve Titus's book Basil of Baker Street.

When a brilliant toymaker is kidnapped by a creepy peg-legged bat, his daughter, Olivia, enlists the aid of the legendary Basil. Basil, Olivia, and Basil's assistant, Dr. Dawson, are part of an intricate city system of Victorian-era London mice. Basil quickly realizes his archenemy, Professor Ratigan (a rat who wants to be a mouse), is behind the abduction. Ratigan (voiced by Vincent Price) fiendishly aspires to take over London rodents--and will stop at nothing to achieve his greatest desire. The unlikely trio of good guys become heroes, of course. The engaging story line is a perfect introduction to Doyle's work and mysteries in general. Look for a very cleverly executed voice-cameo by Basil Rathbone (as Sherlock Holmes, natch). Alan Young (Mr. Ed) also provides a voice. Ages 4 and up. --N.F. Mendoza

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-02-06

This is another disney classic. Set in the heart of London a Sherlock Holmes type mouse sets off to find a missing father with the help of his friend, a Watson type mouse. This is a great movie for all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mouse Detective = Great Disney Film.......2007-01-24

When I first got this movie, I thought this would totally not be as good as the Lion King. But I realized then that it was an awesome Disney film! The animation is dark and quite exciting. The humor is also likeable, and Ratigan is totally the best character in the film, thanks to Vincent Price. One of the best Disney Villains of all time! Not to mention "The World`s Greatest Criminal Mind" and "Let Me Be Good To you". The striptease part in the bar and Ratigan`s drunken henchman made me chuckle.

I think Great Mouse Detective is very underrated, and should belong in the True Classics of Disney-list with the Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Rescuers Down Under, Little Mermaid and Hercules.

Jennifer Jones plays the legendary French peasant who claimed to have dialogues with the Virgin Mary at a Lourdes grotto in 1858. The script handles the visitations as an article of truth (Linda Darnell plays the Virgin), which helps move the drama forward, though much of the story concerns the conflicts that arise in the community after Jones is told the grotto contains healing waters. Made by Henry King (The Snows of Kilimanjaro), the film is gorgeous to look at and sensitively directed; and Jones (who won an Oscar for Best Actress) is radiant in the lead. Whatever one's religious persuasion, this is a strikingly handsome Hollywood production to be enjoyed. The film also earned Academy Awards for cinematography and score. --Tom Keogh

Description

The story of a peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous, a poverty-stricken, pure hearted adolescent, who saw a vision, of a "Beautiful Lady" near her home town of Lourdes in 1858. The wondrous news spreads rapidly throughout France, leaving in its wake a variety of consequences: adoration, suspicion and greed among the people of Lourdes skepticism from the town doctor (Lee J. Cobb) charges of insanity from the town prosecutor (Vincent Price) threats of physical punishment, then support and guidance from the Dean of Lourdes (Charles Bickford), who finally becomes convinced that the miracle has, indeed, taken place. Winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Actress and Best Score, this true story is both first-rate filmmaking and an inspiring tribute to faith, courage and the human spirit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Song of Bernadette.......2007-06-25

It is hard to overstate just how respectfully and reverentially director King handles the details of the Lourdes legend, in which the Virgin (played here by an uncredited Linda Darnell) is said to have appeared to a sickly peasant girl, through whom she conveyed her message of love. That's because he treats the story as fact, depicting Bernadette's divine encounters as wholly natural rather than fantastic. Jones is radiant as the scapegoated Bernadette, and won an Oscar for her effort. Price is wonderful, too, as the withering voice of reason. If you're in need of heavenly grace, lay hands on the ecstatic "Song."

4 out of 5 stars Review on DVD Song of Bernadette.......2007-06-01

Package was fine, I was happy to receive the movie because it's one my husband wanted.

IT IS A GRAT MOVIE BECOUSE YOU CAN UNDESTAND A LOT OF THE FAITH

4 out of 5 stars About as good as could be expected.......2007-05-12

As a movie, The Song of Bernadette, is certainly a classic. As a story, it will appeal to some and not to others, but the film seems to be a faithful (I use the word advisedly) telling of the story. As an attempt to capture the film and make it accessible, the DVD is very good. Some reviewers have complained about the aspect ratio and the mono sound - well in 1943 that's what we had. My one quibble, hence only 4 stars, is that approximately a minute or less of the original film seems to be missing. In the DVD version, the Dean of Lourdes (played by Charles Bickford) demands that the lady of the vision produce a rose out of season, but no rose is produced (I looked for it several times over), but in the TCM version the rose does appear.

5 out of 5 stars The Song of Bernadette.......2007-04-10

I have enjoyed this film many times since my purchase. As an old movie and always a favorite I wanted to have such a good film to watch whenever I feel like a movie due to the lack of quality programs and movies on television. Thank you for your service and promptness in getting films so quickly to me.

Description

A marvelous spectacle spanning six decades and two continents, The Keys of the Kingdom is the glorious epic that introduced audiences to screen newcomer Gregory Peck.

After losing his parents and his childhood sweetheart to tragedy, Francis Chisholm (Peck) joins the priesthood and devotes himself to a life of service and compassion. But Chisholm?s unorthodox beliefs raise eyebrows among his superiors, especially Bishop Angus Mealy (Vincent Price). And when he is sent to the farthest reaches of China to rebuild an abandoned mission, Chisholm faces his greatest challenge of all: to tame a hostile land, win over a superstitious people and save his parish from an invading army. Nominated* for four Academy Awards®, including Best Actor (Peck), The Keys of the Kingdom is a ?towering film stamped with greatness? (The Independent).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars KEYS TO GOD.......2007-05-17

Keys of the Kingdom is an inspiring, wonderful, and exciting movie. Gregory Peck plays a wonderful part as a priest.

5 out of 5 stars Spirituality vs. the Letter of the Law.......2007-03-24

Keys of the Kingdom by A.J. Cronin is very dear to my heart as my first life lessons on tolerance were quoted from it to me by my dear grandmother.
EVERY TIME she came to visit she quoted the passage "there are many rooms in my mansion" to make the point that no one religion has a monopoly on Heaven. The movie is especially touching as were many movies made in the 1940s. The focus is actually on life and basic human values instead of superficiality, violence and vulgar sexual content. One walks away feeling uplifted with a new or revisited insight focused on spirituality rather than the "letter of the law". Gregory Peck is believable and engaging as the humble, sweet-spirited Father Chisholm. It is difficult to believe that this was his debut film. Everyone struggling with issues of faith in today's world should view this film to get in touch with what is truly important.

5 out of 5 stars "Lost" classic.......2007-02-19

I had never heard of this film until I saw it listed in a video catalog a few years ago. I don't recall it being on TV when I was young and I doubt it was mentioned when I heard people discuss the "classics." After finally seeing it recently, however, I have to say that it SHOULD be.

Gregory Peck absolutely shines as Father Chisholm, a simple priest who is dealt a "bad hand" by fate. He encounters hardships in his youth, as a young man, and especially when he accepts an assignment to lead a mission in far-off China. Through it all, he keeps himself grounded and maintains a healthy sense of optimism, oftentimes when the average person might be tempted to "give up." It is a heartwarming story of one man's struggle to follow his calling, and watching it, one will have no problem understanding why Peck was nominated for an Academy Award for this performance. Peck's Father Chisholm exhibits extraordinary resolve and determination, tempered with a sense of humility and a sincere desire to be the best person that he can be.

Five stars. A "lost classic" that deserves to be rediscovered!

5 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson - Video Greatest Hits - HIStory.......2007-05-24

This was a great video, the songs, the dancing, brought back so many great memories. Even my Grand daughters loved it. Thanks for the memories.

5 out of 5 stars You can't beat the King of Pop in his early years!.......2007-05-22

This has all of the old, really good songs that Michael did videos for. No one can go through the 20th Century without being influenced by "Thriller", "Beat It", "Billie Jean", "Remember the Time".... The video even caught the attention of my husband who is not "into" MJ and was supposed to be doing something "important". Children, teenagers, young adults and not-so-young adults all love the early songs of the King of Pop. The video is very entertaining and fun.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.......2007-05-15

This DVD sure brings me back to my High School Days. I loved watching all the old plus the newer stuff from Micheal Jackson. I love every single short movie especially the Thriller one. Worth every penny. Great for Collection.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson Revisited.......2007-05-07

I loved the long versions of "Bad" and "The Way You Make Me Feel". I had forgotten why Michael Jackson was called the KING OF POP! He was ahead of his time in style, with his video shorts, and his stories. His underlining stories all deal with the human condition in some way--"The Way You Make Me FeeL" deals with the importance of being yourself when it comes to love and "Bad" deals with being good over being bad.

One sees his style copied by so many of the entertainers from all over the world again and again. He's the KING OF POP and to date no one has surpassed him. Many have tried but none with the impact he has made on the world.

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER: Audio Commentary by Director Roger Corman Original Theatrical Trailer THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM: Rare Prologue

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Side B.......2007-05-14

I love the Pit and the Pendulum, and the set is a good bargain as well as a good match. I can never get my 10 year old son to watch older movies with me. I had also tried to engage him in Poe stories in book form. But when his teacher read them in class, he finally became interested enough to see these, and he really likes Poe now.
On the DVD they place one movie on one side of the disc, and the the second movie "the Pit and the Pendulum" on the reverse side, side B. I have other movies like this and it seems to work OK. Make sure you at least "test" the DVD when it arrives, I failed to do so until too late, only to learn that the side B of my copy did not work. It was a good enough story for me to bite the bullet and buy another copy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Corman double bill.......2007-02-17

The first two American International-Roger Corman Poe features on one dvd -- great idea, and fine execution. Corman's commentary is very nice to have as well. Pit and Pendulum I first saw at a drive in when I was quite young, and the movie scared the hell out of me. These films have high, for AIP, production values, and look great here. My only question is the odd "theatrical prologue" for Pit and Pendulum, which is not really explained. I do not recall seeing it on the film's first release. Still, this is a dvd I would highly recommend for Corman and AIP and gothic horror fans.

5 out of 5 stars Good Spook For the Buck.......2007-02-12

The master of terror does not fail us in these tales that warp your perception of reality. The plots and twists are a good tribute to Poe who would have loved to work with Price. I highly recomend this.

3 out of 5 stars 2 stories, Vincent Price and Edgar Allan Poe for under $10.00.......2007-01-19

If you like old horror films these are great. The price makes them a bargain. Renting these seperately would cost about as much as buying them. I like old horror films but I can't quite give these more than 3 stars. They are good movies but just not quite 4 stars. Of course, the price easily makes up for that. I especially like Edgar Allan Poe stories. If you like to read, Amazon has the Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe in one book.

3 out of 5 stars Vincent Price fan.......2007-01-11

Vincent Price did a good job with the movie, but the script needed more
details into the character's past.

5 out of 5 stars Best MUSKETEERS of them all!.......2007-06-16

Here is a story that has been told and re-told and re-told, but this Gene Kelly-Lana Turner version is, by far, the most fun, the most complete and certainly the most visually stunning. This is 3-strip Technicolor at its' most glorious. Kelly is a wonderfully energetic Dartagnan, and Lana Turner is a staggeringly beautiful Milady, and she plays her to perfection. The supporting cast could hardly be better: Angela Lansbury,
lovelier than we remembered, Frank Morgan, Van Heflin and June Allyson as
Constance

Don't miss this DVD. It is money well spent!

5 out of 5 stars The Three Musketeers.......2007-05-20

Fabulous movie. We love Gene Kelly and Lana Turner (a delicious villian). The scenery is beautiful, especially filmed in technicolor, and the story is very appropriate for family viewing. Our only diappointment was that it was not released in a wide-screen version which would have enhanced the sword fights and panoramic views.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasmagastic.......2007-05-12

If you have never watched a Three Musketeer's movie, this one is for you! In this early adaptation of Alexander Dumas' book, the characters literally jump off the pages in the form of Gene Kelly, Vincint Price, Angela Landsbury and everyone else involved perfectly.
If you have always been a person to read a book and then be slightly to overly dissapointed during the film remake of that book. Then this movie will change your perspective on that as well. I have used this movie as my "Book" in book reports about four times. And each time the teacher was always amazed at how well I delved into the peoples actuall emotions. That's because I've seen the characters how they were meant to be.
This movie follows the book almost word for word. It's fantastic. I have yet to see another movie based on a book that is nearly as well done as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Almost the best screen version.......2007-05-08

The influence of Buster Keaton on Jackie Chan's brand of comedy-action stunt work is well documented, but looking at Gene Kelly's impressively energetic stunt work in George Sidney's lavish 1948 MGM version of The Three Musketeers it's clear that his viewing extended beyond the silent era. The sheer amount of vitality and imagination that goes into the first duel with Richelieu's men is absolutely astounding: it's almost like watching a vintage live-action Tom and Jerry cartoon. Unfortunately, while he shares Douglas Fairbanks Sr.'s athleticism, he also shares his penchant for ham, particularly in the love scenes (this is the performance Kelly sends up mercilessly in Singin' in the Rain's The Duelling Cavalier), but he's never quite bad enough to throw the film of course. George Sidney, who had one of the best eyes for striking composition of any directors at MGM, makes sure it always looks good (this is from the days when Technicolor really was glorious), Herbert Stothart's rousing score carries it along with unashamed gusto (though it could have done without the Tchaikovsky for the love scenes) and there's a fine supporting cast - Van Heflin, Gig Young and Robert Coote round out the Musketeers, Angela Lansbury and Frank Morgan play the royalty, Lana Turner the femme fatale while Vincent Price provides superbly underplayed velvet villainy as Richelieu, beating Ernst Stavro Blofeld to the cat on the lap business by a good 19 years (though he opts for a tortoiseshell tabby rather than a Persian White). Great fun in a Christmas Day kind of way.

Warners' DVD is quite a treat - a fine transfer with the theatrical trailer, brief radio promo, cartoon (though sadly not the obvious choice of Tom and Jerry's The Two Mouseketeers but What Price Fleadom?) and a vintage James Fitzpatrick travelog.

4 out of 5 stars Superb film.......2007-04-13

Although the film is somewhat outdated what the action scenes concern as compared to special effects used nowadays it is a superb movie. The acting is very good. The elegance and acrobacy of Gene Kelly is outstanding. A film that can stand next to recent remakes.

THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES: Original Theatrical Trailer DR. PHIBES RISES AGAIN!:

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 100% Pure Cult Classic Horror Entertainment.......2007-05-21

This movie is great entertainment. It's an absolute wonderful cult classic horror flick that's able to keep the kid's eyes glued to the screen as well as the rest of the family crew also...or at least I think so anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Ghoulish Fun with a Price .......2007-04-21

Vincent Price was known for the horror genre . As in my horror favorites, this set of Phibes films, Theater of Blood, The Raven, House of Wax and the Fall of the House of Usher are the ones i enjoy most.

Both these films directed by Robert Fuest, who kept the camp on these productions. But did not make this cutey. It was done light, with a horrorable edge and a witty black comedy, which Price was known for in the later 1960s-1970s. It is too bad, Fuest did not do any director's audio commentary, that would be amazing if it happened

In the first film The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Price is in rare form as Doctor Phibes, an antihero who is seeking revenge of the medical team who killed his dead wife. His methods of death is following the ten plagues. Joseph Cotton plays the surgeon who headed the team and Phibes's foil in this movie.

The second film, Phibes heads to Egypt to try to awaken his dead wife with a magician incantation. Robery Quarry (Count Yorga) plays Price's foil in this sequal. The film , like Godfather two, seems better than the first film

Now in the double feature you can enjoy both film of Phibes and watch the masterful Price at work

5 out of 5 stars Hail to the Horror Antihero.......2007-04-21

Antiheroes in horror always seem to find a warm spot in fan's hearts. Perfect examples are easily cited. Just look at successful horror franchises. People always want to see the monster, madman, madwoman, or sometimes even maddoll return. With so many beloved characters, it is disappointing to me that not everyone knows of Dr. Phibes.

I would say that these films were some of the first to embrace the idea of purposely creating a horror antihero. Dr. Phibes, though evil, is charming and humorous. Instead of a growling beast or silent killer, we were offered a scarred human being of great intelligence. I don't think that you can watch these films without taking a liking to Dr. Phibes. Vincent Price was the perfect choice for this role, and is amazing throughout.

If you haven't seen these films, you should give them a chance. I find them to be vital elements of horror film history, and some of the most entertaining films that I own.

4 out of 5 stars First one is great; second isn't.......2006-11-24

I saw both of these movies when they first came out, and remembered them fondly so I bought the twofer disc for $9.99. Upon re-watching them a few days apart, I was struck by how much better the first one is than the second. In the original "Dr. Phibes," the script is coherent and the sets and costumes are quite striking. In the second, everything is done cheaply. The storyline is nonsensical, the sets are cheesy, and the acting is hammy. At one point, a black-and-white shot of ocean waves suddenly appears in the middle of a color film! Still, the ending of "Rises Again" is a classic moment of camp cinema. So, 4 to 5 stars for the first movie, 2 to 3 stars for the second. But for $9.99, I can't complain.

1 out of 5 stars Great Movie - Bad Price.......2006-11-03

I love these campy Vincent Price movies from the 70s and was delighted to find them on DVD. They were sold here on Amazon through a third party vendor for close to 30 bucks. When I got the movie it still had the factory wrapper....along with a Blockbuster price sticker still on the package for $9.99!!!! Man, at least remove the sticker so your customer doesn't feel like a total moron for being ripped off. I almost felt like the vendor was taunting me for being an idiot. First and last time I buy an old movie through a third party Amazon vendor. Looks like I just need to start surfing the bargain bins at Blockbuster instead.
