For years, conventional wisdom has had it that Ed Wood Jr.'s Plan 9 from Outer Space is the ultimate "bad movie," a sort of Holy Grail of cinematic ineptitude. Often lost in the shuffle, though, is Bride of the Monster (fans of Tim Burton's biopic Ed Wood will already be familiar with it and the offscreen misadventures that went along with it). Bela Lugosi plays Dr. Vornoff, a mad scientist working on a race of superbeings in his lab. His process of clamping a metal lampshade onto the heads of his subjects and zapping them with radiation usually kills them, but the monstrous Lobo (Tor Johnson) survives and becomes Vornoff's assistant. Vornoff's plans go awry, though, when he tries to get a nosy reporter to mate with Lobo and winds up being given the atom treatment himself. Suffice it to say that there's a grappling match between Vornoff and Lobo until the evil doctor falls into a pit and wrestles a rubber octopus. Stock footage of lightning and an atomic explosion round things out for a great non sequitur of an ending. Knowing Bela Lugosi's sad state by the time that he and Ed Wood had teamed up makes it hard to watch this movie without feeling a pang of pathos for the 73-year-old actor; indeed, Bride was his last speaking role. Still, any movie with as many obvious gaffes in direction, editing, set design, narrative (heck, take your pick) as Bride is a must for any connoisseur of bad movies. And of course, the gargantuan Tor Johnson gets to utter the deathless line: "Time for... go to bed." --Jerry Renshaw

Description
Weird! Wild! Wood! The most legendary B-movie director of all time, Edward D. Wood, Jr. assaulted audiences worldwide with a string of bizarre, no-budget fusions of horror, science fiction, noir and comedy. Now his oddball legacy is finally collected in one indispensable box set! Feast your eyes on his first feature, the madcap Glen or Glenda? in which Eddie himself portrays a transvestite struggling with his addiction to angora while Bela Lugosi offers inscrutable narration. Blackmail, outlaws on the run, and plastic surgery collide in the surreal crime drama Jail Bait, featuring a young Steve Reeves (Hercules), while Bela returns to create the Bride of the Monster in a heady collision of atomic experiments, a rampaging octopus and clumsy assistant Lobo (played by wrestler Tor Johnson). Wood's indisputable disasterpiece, Plan 9 from Outer Space, offers pie-plate flying saucers, incompetent alien leaders, all-seeing psychic Criswell, goth favorite Vampira and a post-mortem appearance by Lugosi himself in his last film role. Then Lobo and a phony spiritualist usher in a Night of the Ghouls at a spooky marsh filled with shuffling undead and wailing ghosts. Finally, learn all about the man himself with The Haunted World of Ed Wood, a comprehensive disc packed with interviews, film clips, TV rarities and much more! It's enough to make you scream!

IN A NUTSHELL! GREAT SET! LONG LIVE BELA AND ED!.......2007-05-03
"This is an excellent box set and you get all of Ed Wood's films. The king of cheapy creepy's for sure. A must have for any cheese lover!" The box set features "Plan 9 From Outer Space" "An Ed Wood Classic! The film features Bela Lugosi in his final role, but for those of us who love Bela it's nice to see him go out wearing his Dracula's cape. Bela died before the film was finished and Wood's dentist?(who is at least a foot taller than Bela, keeping his face covered by the dracula cape in every scene)had to step in to complete the scenes." The whole box set is a gas!
Ed Wood \ Only for the Collector.......2007-01-09
Ed Wood was the worst film producer of all time. His film, "Plan 9 from Outer Space" has been given the title of "Worst Film Ever Made." Ed was a transvestite so he worn angora sweaters and other women's clothes, and you see this in some of the films.
Although many classic films have been reworked and are in pristine condition, what you see is what you get here. They were a hoot and terrible to begin with. There is in the box a DVD on Dolores Fuller and others of Wood's gang gathering for an Ed Wood Showing. How they all ended up being and looking like is so interesting. Dolores lived with Ed and finally got enough of him and moved on. She became a song writer and wrote some of Elvis' lesser known songs. And she still looks good!
I just loved this collection and got a laugh out of all of it. This is a collection only for those interested in early film making, and as part of film history.
Ed Wood: "He Tampered In God's Domain!".......2006-10-28
Edward D. Wood Jr. was born in 1924 in Poughkeepsie, New York; spent his youth torn between comic books, pulp fiction, and movie matinees; and after a World War II stint in the Marines landed in Hollywood with an itch to wear women's clothing, drink to excess, and make movies. The result was a series of remarkably atrocious low-budget movies of the "so bad its good" variety, and this inexpensive box set offers not only the best know titles but unexpected bonuses as well.
Filmed in 1953, GLEN OR GLENDA is Ed Wood's ode to the joys and tragedies of cross dressing, featuring Wood himself as the conflicted hero and Delores Fuller as the girlfriend who keeps wondering why her angora sweaters are stretched out of shape. The 1954 JAIL BAIT is a riff on teenagers gone bad and is often described as the best made of Wood's films--but the term "best made" is extremely comparative, to say the least. The 1955 BRIDE OF THE MONSTER is the only Wood film that actually made back its cost; featuring a desperate Bela Lugosi, Tor Johnson, a rubber octopus, and a laboratory helmet that looks suspiciously like a collander, it is easily a Wood fan favorite. The 1959 NIGHT OF THE GHOULS is a kinda-sorta sequel, featuring Tor Johnson once again in a remarkably silly story of fraudulent spiritualists who bite off more ghosts than they can chew.
The most celebrated title, of course, is the 1959 PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, infamous as the film built around about five minutes of film Wood took of Bela Lugosi shortly before Lugosi's death. Fans have attempted to catalogue every error in the film, but it is inexhaustible: no matter how many goofs, mistakes, and disasters you notice, you always see one or two more with every viewing. Day turns to night and then to day--all in the same scene. Cars unexpectedly change year and model from cut to cut. Flying saucers cast shadows in outer space. The list is endless.
NIGHT OF THE GHOULS was never actually released during Wood's life time: he couldn't afford to pay the lab fees for a print of the film, and since the film was never issued the transfer is unexpectedly good. This is not the case with the other titles, all of which were pretty battered by the time video and DVD technology arrived on the scene--but this actually part of their charm. And the set includes an unexpected dollop of bonus material.
The big bonus here is THE HAUNTED WORLD OF ED WOOD JR, a 1996 documentary that intercuts various bits of Wood movies with archeival footage of Wood and his circle and interviews with those who knew him, including his leading ladies Delores Fuller, Mona McKinnon, Loretta King, and Vampira (aka Maila Syrjaniemi.) Perhaps the most interesting subject is Bela Lugosi Jr., who is extremely forthright in his opinion of Ed Wood as a cheapjack opportunist who hitched his wagon to a fading and desperate, not out of genuine affection for Bela Lugosi Sr. but to further his own ends. Coming in a close second in bonus material is SAUCERS OVER HOLLYWOOD: THE PLAN 9 COMPANION, which draws from many of the same sources as HAUNTED but which focuses on this specific film.
While it is true that the set does not include every scrap of Ed Wood material available--for a tenth rate director-writer-actor he was remarkably prolific, racking up fifty credits on such films as THE BRIDE AND THE BEAST and ORGY OF THE DEAD--it will hit the spot for all but the most diehard fan. Ed Wood will never appeal to a wide audience, but if you have the warped sense of humor required to appreciate his films, you'll find this set indispensible.

"15 Frightful Horror Films ... Bela Lugosi ... Passport Video".......2006-10-15
Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Béla Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for his portrayal of "Dracula" in the American Broadway stage production, and subsequent film, of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story.
Late in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr., a fan of Lugosi, found him living in obscurity and near-poverty and offered him roles in his films, such as "GLEN OR GLENDA?" (1953) (in which his role made no more sense than the rest of the movie) and as a Dr. Frankenstein-like mad scientist in "BRIDE OF THE MONSTER" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier of the film was ostensibly intended to help pay for his treatment expenses. The extras on an early DVD release of "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" (1959) include an impromptu interview with Lugosi upon his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, in his Dracula cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood later conceived of Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi in additional shots --- notice however the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face with his cape in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi died during production, and it shows."
Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956 while lying in bed in his Los Angeles home. He was 73 --- Bela Lugosi was buried wearing one of the many capes from the Dracula stageplay, as per the request of his son and fifth wife, in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California --- Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his famous cloak; Bela Lugosi, Jr. has confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, arrived at their decision independently.
BIOS:
1. Bela Lugosi (aka: Béla Ferenc Dezsõ Blaskó)
Date of birth: 20 October 1882 - Lugos, Austria-Hungary. [now Lugoj, Romania]
Date of death: 16 August 1956 - Los Angeles, California
2. Edward D. Wood Jr. (Director, Writer and Producer)
Date of birth: 10 October 1924 - Poughkeepsie, New York
Date of death: 10 December 1978 - North Hollywood, California
This collection of "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years --- but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten ... Plus the half-hour tribute "100 Years of Horror: Bela Lugosi", hosted by Christopher Lee --- and a great job by Passport Video for this release --- looking forward to more of the same from the '20s and '50s vintage...order your copy now from Amazon or Passport Video, stay tuned once again for more remarkable films from the vaults of classic television and Hollywood during the Golden Era of Entertaiment.

Ed Wood: the man and his mission!.......2006-09-18
Ed Wood? Yup, he's a genius... well sort of. I strongly agree with another reviewer who indicated that a film would need to lack any entertainment value at all to be labeled the worst film of all time. As far as this notion goes, Ed Wood didn't make bad films because every one of the five he made in the 1950's are loads of fun and laughs. 'Glen or Glenda' and 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' are likely my favorites. His first feature, about transvestism, is so inept and so incredibly strange, that one simply watches mesmerized at the audacity and enigmatic spirit Wood demonstrated as a filmmaker in the early 1950's. What can be said about 'Plan 9 from Outer Space,' except that every serious film buff and film maker should make this film priority viewing. The other three films directed by Ed Wood and featured in this box set are all worthy of attention because they're nearly as campy, inept, and hilarious as the other two I mentioned above. On the back of the case to 'Jail Bait,' the film description indicates that Ed Wood, here, made his first legitimate film. If the film is legitimate simply because it is less inept and hilarious than his other films, I do think this statement is quite misleading. Ed Wood never made a film that would receive any serious consideration for legitimacy from the mainstream and the critical masses. Ed Wood, now more than ever before, remains in a class all his own. Ed Wood's films are stamped with his trademark zeal, good humor, and distorted logic, and remain the work of a filmmaker who may have lacked talent, but was never lacking in purpose. The Ed Wood box set is a perfect way to enjoy Ed Wood's films for the first or twentieth time. This set is a great buy, but don't neglect to check out Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood,' in my opinion, one of the greatest film biographies ever made.

ONE THUMB UP ONE THUMB DOWN!.......2007-04-16
This is a strange movie that is really two movies going on at the same time. The scenes with the Monster and his little new found friend are engaging, but the scenes with Sting and his ready made bride will bore you to tears! It's a shame as this could have been much better.
A 1980's version of the Bride of Frankenstein.......2007-04-02
Sting is Frankenstein who decides to create a mate for his first monster. There are 2 stories going on at the same time. One is about the woman Frankenstein creates and the other is the fate of his first monster who finds a friend and joins the circus. Frankenstein names his female creation Eva and decides to teach her to be an equal to men. He educates her and spends a lot of time with her as he finds himself in love with her. The movie cuts back and forth from one story to the other. In my opinion the "run away and join the circus" story takes away the intensity of the horror that Frankenstein is all about. The monster, Victor never forgets Eva and dreams of finding her again but is afraid she will reject him as she is so beautiful and he knows he is ugly. As Eva gains confidence and knowledge she begins to hate Frankenstein. She is horrified when she realizes the truth about her origins. They have fight at the end; "You did not create me." She screams and Frankenstein answers, "As a matter of fact, I did." Eva meets Victor at the end.
Kitch at it's best, but boring in parts.......2006-12-12
I have always ADORED Sting, so I saw this when I was a little girl and Police fan and LOVED it. However, I recently saw it again and noticed that it didn't hold up too well. A little slow in parts. I still adore Sting, so it is worth watching just to see him have a great time swishing around in an 80's goth redux of "The Bride of Frankenstein." If you liked him pissed of and yelly in the Hi-tech diaper in "DUNE," you'll like him here too.
pleasing to look at.........2006-10-26
I mean - Sting and Jennifer Beals together on the same screen? Forget about it. Not the greatest movie ever, but nice to look at. I actually saw this in the theater. The SECOND movie that Sting gets killed in!
very enjoyable.......2006-09-13
I don't expect anything more of a movie than to enjoy it and be entertained. I don't seek to psychoanalyze or offer up in-depth critique, it's only a movie. I either enjoy it or I don't. I like this movie, it's a great rainy day or late night flick. The scenery is beautiful and the horses are magnificent!

Great entertainment!.......2006-02-27
Matt Cordell, once a respected officer of the law, but now a rage-driven zombie, forced to live an excistence as neither living or dead.
This time he's out to get the persons responsible for a accident that put a female cop in coma.
The movie is very entertaining, perhaps even better than part 2(wich I also liked very mutch) It has good and talented actors, not teenage amateurs like in most other slasher films. The effects are also great, especially a burning car chase that must've been very complicated and unpleasant for the stuntman.
So if you liked part 2(Like I did) then go and get this one as well.
Me Cop 3.......2005-07-23
Matt Corrdell wont stay dead. And this time he's back to clear the name of a cop who kills someone in a foiled robbery, but the footage shown made it look to be her fault, when it was defence. And onc eher name is cleared, for some reason Matt Cordell wants to pot her as his bride.
This one didnt make a lot of sense to me in a few parts. But it has all your cheesy horror movie cliches in it that make this just a late night thriller for those who wanna be entertained and who wont go nitpicking on details and plot lines.
I really lked the ending of the film. It was really a blazing way to go out.
Here's to looking forward to Maniac Cop 4, hopefully.
They should release this as a box set or something. Have the trilogy on one disc maybe? Hell, they didnt bother to include ANY bonus features so 3 of them will fit on a four hour disc.
The official Maniac Cop 3 DVD release!.......2004-06-02
Love it or hate it 'Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence' is here on DVD. The last DVD release was by a company named platinum back in 1999 I believe.
Well this new DVD release has out done the last one, the picture quality is much more clearer and sharper than before and this is also in widescreen and with a trailer!
This is the first official DVD by the original company that released this film back in 1993 so the quality is very good but the front cover artwork is horrible-what were they smoking?
Also William Lustig has been placed back into the credits as the only director (there used to be 2 directors now this states only 1 in both the film credits and the box art).
If you liked the first two Maniac Cop films give this one a try!

Description
Diabolical! Fiendish! Horrorific! Legendary horror icon Bela Lugosi (Dracula) stars as Dr. Eric Vornoff, who with Lobo (Tor Johnson), a crazed man-beast servant, is conducting flesh-burning radiation experiments in an attempt to create a legion of atomic supermen. Co-written, produced and directed by cult filmmaker Ed Wood, Jr., "Bride of the Monster" includes Ed's infamous stable of players: Dolores Fuller (Glen or Glenda?, Jailbait), Tor Johnson and Paul Marco (Plan 9 From Outer Space). This was Bela Lugosi's last screen performance and one of Ed Wood's best efforts.
Customer Reviews:
CLASSIC CAMPY SCI - FI ! BELA LUGOSI AND ED WOOD!.......2007-05-03
This is another grade Z Ed Wood Film that is so bad it's good. Bela Lugosi and Tor Johnson seem to be having a ball in this creepy cheapy Sci-Fi Horror romp!
Atom.......2007-04-22
This is my favorite Wood picture. Originally called Bride of the Atom, this was Ed's anti-nuclear picture. This one is just bad all the way around. Bad script, bad acting, bad sets, and just some terrible continuity errors. The entire film takes place in a couple of rooms and 1 outdoor set. The laboratory is laughable as is this awful fight between Bela and Tor with the obvious double for a frail Lugosi. But all that badness equals a lot of fun. This is one of those films you just watch shaking your head wondering how it ever got made. It's a strange fun ride.
Total Time: 1034 mins on DVD ~ Passport Video #5260 ~ (9/05/2006)
Great Idea.......2006-04-26
The idea behind this movie is great for a horror film.
You've got the mad scientist who is still practicing his forbidden experiments in a creepy old mansion. Plus he's still being pursued and persecuted from people in his own country who originally mocked his genius.
His laboratory is accessible through a secret entrance behind the fireplace.
He's got a nice monster in the swamp for getting rid of people.
But it's the execution of the movie that some people (not me) may find disappointing.
Maybe it will be the refridgerator and stove down in the lab. I guess Bella could have made himself a nice snack in between radiating peoples' brains.
Maybe it will be the monster in the tank that just doesn't seem to be that interested in eating people.
Anyway the aging Bella gives the performance of his life. He even falls back on some of his Dracula skills to hypnotize the lovely heroine (the 'bride').
Actually as some other reviewers mentioned I'm not exactly sure what she was supposed to be the bride of. Someone suggested Bella was going to hook her up with Lobo.

Bad Enough to Amuse.......2005-05-22
Ed Wood was a lousy filmaker and director. His movies are notoriously bad. That's what makes them watchable. This film is arguably one of his better attempts. That is truly frightening. That's OK because the only frightening thing about this "monster movie" is that it was supposed to be taken seriously. That in itself is amusing.
The story is of a series of mysterious dissapearances in the swamp near town. The police and a snoopy woman reporter are all there to investigate. As it turns out, the reason for the mysterious vanishings is a mad scientist fugitive from Easter Europe who is trying to use atomic energy to creat a race of atomic supermen to conquer the world. Hilarious.
Bela Lougosi plays the mad scientist. Watching him is amusing on its own. His conception of "mad scientist" seems to comprise his accent, gratuitous pseudo-scientific words and some strange throwbacks to his earlier career as Dracula. His is one of the better acting jobs.
Tor Johnson, a former pro wrestler, plays the evil sidekick and monster. His dialog consists of "ARRRRGH!" He too is fun to watch.
Perhaps the best single job of acting in this film is by the giant octopus. It is made of rubber and says nothing.
It may seem like I am blasting this film. I am when it comes to serious cinema. It is, however, so poorly done as to be worth buying and watching. This is especially true of Ed Wood fans.

It appeared, at the end of the epochal 1931 horror movie Frankenstein, that the monster had perished in a burning windmill. But that was before the runaway success of the movie dictated a sequel. In Bride of Frankenstein, we see that the monster (once again played by Boris Karloff) survived the conflagration, as did his half-mad creator (Colin Clive). This remarkable sequel, universally considered superior to the original, reunites other key players from the first film: director James Whale (whose life would later be chronicled in Gods and Monsters) and, of course, the inimitable Dwight Frye, as Frankenstein's bent-over assistant. Whale brought campy humor to the project, yet Bride is also somehow haunting, due in part to Karloff's nuanced performance. The monster, on the loose in the European countryside, learns to talk, and his encounter with a blind hermit is both comic and touching. (The episode was later spoofed in Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein.) A prologue depicts the author of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, being urged to produce a sequel by her husband Percy and Lord Byron. She's played by Elsa Lanchester, who reappears in the climactic scene as the man-made bride of the monster. Her lightning-bolt hair and reptilian movements put her into the horror-movie pantheon, despite being onscreen for only a few moments. But in many ways the film is stolen by Ernest Thesiger, as the fey Dr. Pretorious, who toasts the darker possibilities of science: "To a new world of gods and monsters!" Absolutely. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
The Bride of Frankenstein.......2007-06-21
Whale's brilliant, wonderfully cheeky sequel to "Frankenstein" managed to equal its predecessor in terms of tone and originality, while adding sly barbs of humor. Apart from Whale's clever, offbeat direction, the film's success is due to the marvelous cast of eccentrics: Thesiger's weird, malevolent turn as Dr. Pretorius, Dwight Frye's nutty hunchback, and the mesmerizing Elsa Lanchester, playing Mary Shelley in the film's prologue, and then appearing briefly as the shrieking Bride in a now-iconic lighting-streak fright wig, couldn't be better. Then, of course, there's Karloff, whose sad, tragic attempts to speak and connect with others simply underscore his tortured pathos. Wed yourself to the morbidly endearing "Bride."
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN: Which Is The Best DVD Version?.......2006-09-24
_Frankenstein -- The Legacy Collection_ currently has the best DVD version of _Bride of Frankenstein_. The original _Bride of Frankenstein_ is out of print, but it has been replaced with a much better version.
Using two DVD players, I loaded up both the original _Bride of Frankenstein_ and the new version from the Legacy Collection and then switched between them. Unlike the original version, the Legacy _Bride of Frankenstein_ image is centered, and in most scenes, contains approximately 20% more picture information than the original, because the edges of the picture are no longer cut off. The original version is missing a lot picture information due to its being off center and magnified.
The original _Bride of Frankenstein_ picture is virtually unacceptable due to its poor video quality. Although the picture quality of the original version is sharper than the new one, this sharpness is accompanied by excess video noise, snow and other distracting artifacts. Now, after being run through a video sanitizer, the Legacy version of _Bride of Frankenstein_ has a highly-polished, "Citizen Kane" look. The new image is now virtually free of distracting artifacts, but at the expense of some picture sharpness. Black level, on the other hand, is excellent.
The audio level of the Legacy _Bride of Frankenstein_ is much lower than that of the original version. This doesn't seem to present a problem, but it will be necessary to turn up the volume quite a bit more on the new DVD. The sound quality of the two versions seems to be about the same, once the volume is equalized.
The main attraction of the Legacy _Bride of Frankenstein_ is its grab bag price. While the original _Bride of Frankenstein_ listed for $29.98, The Legacy Collection contains Frankenstein / Bride of / Son of / Ghost of / House of -- plus all of the original supplementary material. This 5-movie collection is a real bargain at only $26.98.
Bottom line: The Legacy _Bride of Frankenstein_ -- while not as good as it could be -- is vastly superior to the original version. If the video sanitation had been turned down a notch and the volume had been turned up a notch, the Legacy version would have been nearly perfect. Maybe Universal will get it right when the 75th anniversary edition comes out in 2010.
Bride of Frankenstein.......2006-09-01
One of the most renouned sequels to the origanal Frankenstein, The Bride will really terrify viewers of all ages.
Starting where the original left off, the villagers watch as the remains of the windmill start to burn out. But, little do the villagers know that the monster still lives in a watery cave underneath the mill. He escapes and reaks havoc on the countryside. Dr. Frankenstein is approached by Dr. Pretorious who wants to construct a bride for the monster. But, things go wrong when the mate rejects the thing who is her "husband."
Equipped with a four star cast with Colin Clive reprising his role as the infamous Baron Frankenstein and Dwight Frye as a shifty henchman named Karl, The Bride of Frankenstein is the horror film of the age.
"There have been... developments since he came to me".......2006-03-15
Much like CASABLANCA or CITIZEN KANE, it is almost impossible to see THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN completely fresh because so much of our popular culture today always refers back to it already. Like those other two films even the first time you see James Whale's most celebrated film you know the lines and the situations almost before they happen because the film has had such a resonance for our culture. As the documentary that accompanies this DVD, "She's Alive!," points out, almost everything about the film was serendipitous, from the superb cast, the great make-up and art direction, the extremely witty script, and the oddly perverse spirit in which the director approached this sequel to 1931's FRANKENSTEIN. Boris Karloff greatly deepens his most celebrated role by emphasizing the creature's alienation and loneliness, but the film belongs in the end to Ernest Thesiger, unforgettable as the camp and decadent Dr. Pretorius, and of course most of all to Elsa Lanchester doing double duty as Mary Shelley and as the title role. She appears for less than five minutes in the entirety of the film, but yet she walks away with the film entirely: who can forget her uncannily pixillated movements as the Bride, suggesting she should never have been brought to life, or her great shriek of horror when she meets her groom? This is in the end more of a comedy than a horror film, but it more than meets the promise of its predecessor (and enlarges and deepens the first film's meanings).
"She hate me!".......2006-01-30
Director James Whales's sequel to the classic "Frankenstein" is even better than the original. The Monster (Boris Karloff) is cast as a more sympathetic creature, longing for peace and friendship in a world that is repulsed by it. Little wonder that so many have seen in it subtextual parallels to Whales's own life as a gay man. Such undercurrents add interest to a film that also works as pure entertainment. Karloff delivers a great performance, his last as the Monster, despite the burdensome makeup. The sets, direction, and photography create a stylistically extreme work of fantasy that is a masterpiece of pure imagination.

Go For the Legacy Collections.......2004-12-24
I'm surprised to see some fairly recent reviews (2004)praising this set. Folks, this is a high price to pay for eight movies, when you can get Universal's recently released "Legacy" series for about $20 a pop. Because the "Legacy" series crams an average of five movies onto each two-disk set, the picture quality isn't as rich as it could be. (Keep in mind, though that the Universal Monster Collection was released relatively early in DVD history, and I don't think the images were cleaned up all that much. I certainly found my old VHS copy of "The Mummy" far superior to the single-disk version I bought early on. The "Legacy" series improves the picture and sound, even though neither is perfect. Universal has released "Legacy" series for Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and The Mummy. Each set features the original Universal movie, plus three or four sequels. The Frankenstein Legacy Collection, for instance, features all three Karloff outings, plus House of Frankenstein and Ghost of Frankenstein. The Mummy Legacy Collection features the Karloff original, plus Mummy's Hand, Ghost, Tomb and Curse. All for a great price. Check it out and save your money!
SUPERB CLASSIC MONSTER MIX.......2004-10-26
I waffled back and forth on whether to get this. By the time I was ready to go for it, it was TOO LATE. It was no longer available for sale here. But then, wouldn't you know it, dumb luck paid off when I checked back and it was available AGAIN - and for only $120!!!! What's great about this set is the original poster artwork featured on the cover of each dvd case. Plus, the individual sepia-tone processed photographs of each monster featured on the cardboard slipcase is cool. Lots of nice special features (commentaries, et al.) It is a great collection. Unfortunately Universal saw the marketing possiblities years down the road after having green-lit "Van Helsing" (which I've yet to see, hearing how ATROCIOUS it is), so the only way you can have these films is individually in their current incarnation, which I suppose will suffice as long as all original 8 in this collection are released. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!
What a great collection!.......2004-08-08
It's rare to have such a collection of real, honest-to-God classics, in this case from the Universal horror vaults of the 1930s. (Most "collections", as you doubtless know, are usually Grade B to Z flicks thrown together by genre or stars' names). But this really IS a classic collection.
Sure, the Claude Rains 1943 version of "Phantom of the Opera" is relative crap, as most horror fans agree: too much opera, too little phantom (and can't compare to the Lon Chaney 1925 silent version, or even the maligned 1962 version with Herbert Lom that nobody even remembers!) But the '43 version, included in this collection, is the only inadequate entry.
Dont be put-off by the price: this is a STEAL given the contents, even if they're out-of-stock and you have to go to one of the off-vendors.
If you're into the classics....you'll love these!!.......2003-05-06
These movies are what I grew up on! If you enjoy movies with more acting from the actors and less special effects, these will not disappoint!! Great for a Saturday night home alone with a full moon on the rise.... :-)

ITS ABOUT TIME.......2007-05-07
I first saw this during AMC's Monsterfest a few years ago. And what took
so long for female horror characters to be recognized. I bought this a
month ago when I noticed it was available. This DVD helped as being a guide to discovering other horror movies. And Elvira as host added that touch. The DVD describes how woman shapped horror movies from the silent films to today. I do highly recomend this DVD for all horror fans.

Which "Bride of..." movie is worse? You decide. Have fun........2005-04-29
"Bride of Frankenstein" is the best horro movie of all-time that is a "Bride of" one monster or another. Everybody would agree with that summation since most people think James Whale's film was better than his original "Frankenstein." But what is at the other end of this continuum? With this DVD you can check out the two prime contenders for the honor of being the worst "Bride of" movie.
If only "Bride of the Gorilla" was a much fun as the tagline: "A Blonde Beauty and a Savage Beast... alone in the Jungle!" But "Bride of the Gorilla" is more of a psychological horror story than you might expect from that declaration. Raymond Burr, still in his hey day as a stock villain in B-movies, is Barney Chavez, the foreman who introduces the owner of a South American plantation (Paul Cavanaugh) to a poisonous snake so he can marry the beautiful window Dina (Barbara Payton, the most famous actress to come out of Cloquet, Minnesota before Jessica Lange). However, the local witch woman knows the truth and hits Barney with a drug-aided voodoo curse that makes him roam the jungle at night as a gorilla. Not that gorilla's are indigenous to South America, but why be picky? There are lots of African animals in this film, courtesy of the stock footage that abounds in this low budget film.
This 1951 film is written and directed by Curt Siodmak. "Bride of the Gorilla" was his first American film as a director after one film in pre-war Germany, but his name was really made in both countries as a screenwriter. On this side of the ocean Siodmak did the screenplays for "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman," "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" and "Creature with the Atom Brain." However, there really is not much of a story here, which is this film's biggest problem. The big question is whether Barney is really turning into a gorilla or does he only think he is turning into a gorilla? Burr is more than competent in his role and the only real reason to watch "Bride of the Gorilla," but the rest of the cast are little better than the stock footage, although Lon Chaney, Jr. and Woody Strode have bit parts. This one grades out at 3 stars.
It is more likely you remember "Bride of the Monster," also known as "Bride of the Atom," as the 1956 Ed Wood film where Bela Lugosi wrestles with a giant fake octopus (oh, THAT Ed Wood film). The argument here is not that this is a good movie, but we are talking Ed Wood, which means a whole different criteria for evaluating a film and your enjoyment in viewing same. Yes, this is a bad film, but there is such an earnestness to Wood's efforts that he is obviously oblivious to it all, which makes the film equally endearing and depressing. The man got his movies made, so I just do not see this as sad as those people who finally get the opportunity to make a film and make some dreadful splatter flick. So, now, Ed Wood is not in the lowest circle of the cinematic inferno. This is not a four-star film, just a four-star experience. Big difference.
Lugosi is the evil mad scientist Dr. Eric Vornoff, who uses his dumb assistant, Lobo (Tor Johnson) to capture the locals so he can use atomic energy to transform them into supermen back as his laboratory in an abandoned house in the middle of a swamp where the pet rubber octopus out back is used to dispose of the mistakes. Intrepid girl reporter Janet Lawton (Loretta King) investigates the disappearances, although her fiance, Detective Lt. Dick Craig (Tony McCoy) tries to warn her off. Janet is captured by Lobo and (horrors) forced to wear a wedding dress (thereby justifying if not explaining the title). Can Dick and the other cops rescue her in time? This is a two star movie providing four star entertainment.
"Plan 9 From Outer Space" remains the apex of bad Ed Wood films, but all things considered "Bride of the Monster" probably comes in second. The acting is probably worse, but so is the script, so I do not find as many memorably lines that force you to howl in laughter. Much is made of Lugosi's participation in these Ed Wood flicks and this is the one where the old actor has the most to do as he goes tampering with God's domain. He gives it his all despite the problems with the script and the fact there is no budget for making this movie. "Night of the Ghouls" is considered a sequel to this film because Tor Johnson again plays "Lobo," but do not expect any more continuity between the two than that if you bother to track it down, but then there is not reason for you to do so. After "Plan 9 From Outer Space" this is the Ed Wood film to check out and on this DVD you get "Bride of the Gorilla" too, so this would be the way to go, which is why we round up.
