It's sick! It's twisted! It's House of 1,000 Corpses, and it's more fun than a wholesome bowl of "Agatha Crispies"! Dropped by two studios (Universal and MGM) and doomed to obscurity until Lions Gate Films gave it a limited theatrical release, Rob Zombie's gonzo horror flick is a blood-spattered throwback to the gore-fests of the '70s, lending new meaning to the term "box-office gross." Most critics misunderstood this unbridled exercise in graphic style and violence, but for devoted horror buffs it's a refreshing rebuttal to the comparatively "polite" frights of the post-Scream era. While paying homage to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left, Motel Hell, and other gory classics, Zombie's ramshackle plot (two young couples are terrorized by an inbred family of homicidal maniacs) lacks a crucial sense of dread, but his pastiche of vivid colors, grainy fetish-films, and photo-negative imagery is guaranteed to hold your attention. A bona-fide cult item, this House is definitely worth a visit... if you dare. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Not scary but it's good, campy fun........2007-06-25

This movie is about a group of young people whose car breaks down and they seek help from a group of people who turn out to be a bunch of black magic-practicing murderous rednecks. Sounds familiar? Yeah, it's that cliche plotline made popular by films such as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". However, Zombie wasn't trying to make a film that was purely unique. It was meant to be a homage to the films he loved and as such the movie is a nice accomplishment. Knowing that he could not match the scares of those classic films, he went for all-out campiness. For this reason, I wouldn't call the film scary, but it sure is fun to watch. The closest comparison that I can think of is "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2", another underrated film.

Some elements are confusing and don't seem to have much to do with the plotline. Seriously, whatever theories are running about, does anyone truly understand how the old African-American man fits into the story? It doesn't matter though. The plot is pretty much secondary anyway. All of these things add to the atmosphere and the fun. You can say the movie is style over substance, but does it ever have style.

Two more comments. For one, I LOVE the opening scene. Maybe it's a sign that I'm a disturbed individual, but that scene cracked me up. He may be a villian, but I love the clown. The scene had a nice mix of humor and gore. I guess those two things can mix. Is that combination a bad influence? Hmmmm...maaaybe.

The other comment: Ring the bell on the menu screen but don't choose an option immediately. The clown pops up and makes a bunch of funny statements about how you won't pick an option or say anything.
(paraphrased) "I take it y'all must be mutes 'cause I know you wouldn't be ****ing with me, now would you? No siree, the last person to **** with me ain't having a real howdy-doody day right now."
(looking at a porn mag) "Oooh-eee, all that and flexible too!"
It has to be said in character for you to see the humor.

5 out of 5 stars rock on rob.......2007-05-17

this is a gem for any horror lover i love the story and that it was set in the 70s

3 out of 5 stars A different type of scary........2007-05-02

I decided to watch this because one of my favorite actresses (Erin Daniels) is in it. Thankfully, I rented it instead of buying it.

I'd put this movie into the same group of scary movies as the Michael Myers movies, the original "The Hills Have Eyes" and, in general, most "older" scary movies in the sense that they are all labeled as horror movies but aren't all that scary. However, this movie is different from other scary movies because it's more creepy and disturbing than scary. There's killing, yes, but the killing is more torturous and humiliating and cult-like than Jason or Myers-type killings. Zombie throws in weird, random shots of naked women and clowns and such. The ending is predictable and the family in the movie is a typical scary movie family but to say that this movie is a typical scary movie is completely false. It's weird. It's creepy. It has bunny costumes. It has people buried alive. It has innocent-looking, evil chicks. It's disturbing. It's different. It's worth a watch.

If you're into scary movies, I'd suggest you watch this just because it's a "different" kind of scary movie. If you generally don't like scary movies, go ahead and skip it. If I could, I would've given this movie 2 1/2 stars instead of 3.

5 out of 5 stars Well-accomplished........2007-04-19

This movie is a weird, very different viewing experience, just like it's meant to be. I don't think anyone can really criticise a movie as self-conscious as this one. It's bad, it's tacky, it's over-the-top horrible so that it almost seems funny, but that's the whole point. It's deliberate exploitation film based on a long history of bad yet strangely fascinating movies.

The intention, it seems, is to create in the viewer something that approaches a sense of delight at how absurd the horror genre can be, though still confusedly mixed with repulsion. This sense of repulsion is something that the viewer is never completely successful at repressing, despite their attempts to find the film purely funny. To seek this sort of combination of feelings is the reason many people still watch tasteless old horror movies, and laugh at them, perhaps subconsciously attempting to conquer their own fears of the possibility of intense pain and terror by turning it into humour. This film deliberately tries to create and play off of that sort of reaction. It emphasises both the humour and the repulsion factors more strongly than the older films it's based on, where this combination was unintentional. Other films have tried this to a certain extent, but with too much emphasis on humour and not enough genuine gruesomeness, making these films merely campy and not nearly so rich in contradictory sentiment as House of 1,000 Corpses.

So if you aren't into that sort of thing you probably can't appreciate where this is coming from, or why anyone would like it. But you're also not the intended audience, so your opinion doesn't count! For what it is, it's a very unique film that does something quite new, and it's surprisingly sucessful.

And personally I think the fish sculpture alone makes the whole movie worthwhile, that scene definitely made my life just a little better.

5 out of 5 stars 1 of the best horror films ever! .......2007-04-17

This is 1 of the best horror films ive ever seen. The plot is twisted. Two couples get lost while searching for the infamous Dr. Satan. ALong the way they encounter several horrors that include a bizare group of psycotics. If ur a horror fan like i am, this is essential for ur collection. But if u dont like blood, gore, and vulgar language this is not for u.

One of the best zombie shockers of the 1970s, this Spanish-Italian coproduction (also known as The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue and Don't Open the Window, among other titles) is a real international affair. Inspired by George Romero's genre-shattering American hit Night of the Living Dead, it was shot in England by a Spanish director with a largely British cast, and supplemented by Spanish zombies and American character actor Arthur Kennedy as a bitter Irish police detective (with only a hint of a brogue). He's investigating a sudden rash of violent murders (the work of Satanists, he's convinced) and closes in on a pair of newcomers to the sleepy Northern England town, longhaired antique dealer Ray Lovelock and his nervous traveling companion Christine Galbó. Only they know the real culprits: newly deceased corpses, revived by agricultural experiments in ultrasonic radiation that are also turning newborns into vicious little monsters. Director Jorge Grau delivers all the stumbling zombies and gory flesh feasts you could hope for in a 1974 movie, but more importantly he creates the rare zombie thriller that manages to be both scary and smartly done. Some of the twists are a bit more far-fetched than others (why does dabbing blood on the eyes of long-dead cadavers magically bring them to life, and how would a zombie even know to try?), but it's a minor quibble in the face of the startling blood frenzy and Grau's satisfying dark dramatic twists.

The DVD also features an introduction and a 20-minute interview with Grau ("I hope you will suffer profoundly," he jokes in the opening), as well as a gallery of posters and stills, TV ads, and radio spots. --Sean Axmaker

Description

The Epic Zombie Shocker!

Two traveling companions, George ( Ray Lovelock of AUTOPSY) and Edna ( Christine Galbo of THE KILLER MUST KILL AGAIN), come across a small town infested with the "living dead" that are satisfying their cannibalistic hunger on anyone they come across. Discovering that an agricultural machine using radiation waves is at the root of all the havoc, George and Edna fight for survival and their innocence as they are pursued by a relentless detective ( Arthur Kennedy of THE ANTICHRIST and FANTASTIC VOYAGE) who is convinced they are responsible for the ghoulish acts of violence plaguing the countryside. All this leads to a gruesome showdown at the Manchester Morgue - an ending that knots a horrifying twist in the lives of all involved!

Also know as THE LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE and DON'T OPEN THE WINDOW, this carefully constructed and beautifully photographed tale of the undead roaming the English countryside comes from acclaimed Spanish Director Jorge Grau.

5 out of 5 stars Wake The Dead..........2007-06-27

LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE is as good or better than any of my all-time favorite zombie movies. Yes, it's right up there w/ NIGHT, DAWN, and DAY OF THE DEAD! LSCL has a similar sense of building dread and awfulness! It's sort of like Fulci's ZOMBIE, THE BEYOND, and CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD in its darkness and malevolence. Needless to say, I love it! At first, I thought it might be goofy, until the ghouls started walkin'! The story is cool, w/ a seemingly innocent cause for the zombie plague. The rural setting adds to the utter isolation and desparate atmosphere of doom. Believe me, you won't know who will die next! No story-book endings here! Highly recommended...

5 out of 5 stars Blame the Farmers!!.......2007-06-26

"Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" belongs to two sub-genres of horror which were very popular in the 1970's and 80's. The first of these is the Zombie film, also incorporating elements from cannibal films. The influence of Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" is very notable on this film, scenes such as the films heroine being attacked in her car by a vagrant zombie and the shocking finale when the hero is shot dead by the bigoted police inspector are among many moments liberally borrowed from Romero's trailblazing effort. But this is more than a mere pastiche or tribute, and this is due to it being an ecological horror film. The revolt of nature occurs here due to a revolutionary method of insect extermination utilised by the ministry of agriculture. This piece of hi-tech equipment uses radiation and sound waves to drive crop pests to insanity, and confirms director Jorge Grau's determination to challenge modernity with a paranoid and destructive depiction of technology and a vision of the city which shows it as a monstrously polluted and virtually unliveable space. So as well as an excellent zombie film, replete with a number of superior moments of gore, this is a film which highlights the dichotomy between city and countryside (a pre-occupation of much Italian horror), the bigotry of a more repressed older generation towards the young (long hair and faggot clothes!!) represented by the bitter police inspector, and a general feeling of paranoia toward technological progress and modernity. This Spanish/Italian co-production, which utilises the green and pleasant lands of England beautifully, works as a straight forward down and dirty horror flick, but also as an intelligent if bleak film, which more than holds its own with the film that inspired it.

4 out of 5 stars very cool film.......2007-06-15

This film follows in the footsteps of NOLD thats for sure, however, it comes out like "children shouldn't play with dead things". Its truly a one of a kind zombie film that shouldn't be over looked and different way of making a zombie film and truly one of the best i've seen in awhile. Highly Recommended!!

1 out of 5 stars waste of money and time!!.......2007-06-14

This movie should not even be associated with the zombie genre!! Let's state the obvious the movie is boring and drags on FOREVER, and it never picks up. I love Blue Underground but they dropped the ball by wasting there money releasing this garbage!! Stear far away from this atrocity.

5 out of 5 stars very creepy movie.......2007-05-07

the mood of this film is very dark, and i'll admit it is very very creepy...one of the best zombie movies of that ever made

4 out of 5 stars Charming low-budget horror.......2007-06-06

Another film with a title reminiscent of Rob Zombie's films, but with much more taste and artistry, even on a low budget. This film has an old-school charm that is hard to find. I enjoyed the atmospherics of this film and the soundtrack. I liked the entire gimmick of the seven deaths being re-enacted over again, and the introduction that ties into this was also interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Eerie Movie..............................2006-01-03

I think this movie is great.................The ending as well as the begning was very strange and creepy. For those of you who like I know what you did last summer or Texas chainsaw massacre stay away this movie is not for you. But For those who like good old fashioned artistic horror movies rent or buy. regardless of the other reviews this movie is really great................

1 out of 5 stars A waste of Celluloid.......2003-07-12

After reading some of the glowing reviews, I took a chance on this film. I didn't have high expectations knowing that it was a low budget film.

In contrast to some of the reviews, the acting was too melodramatic, the sound quality wasn't that great, the script was dull and the entire film is too dated for today's audience, even for "B" movie fans.

Rent it first before deciding on purchasing it. Otherwise you may kick yourself for wasting money on a film you won't view a second time.

3 out of 5 stars "The House of Seven Corpses" AKA: Who really killed Cleon?.......2002-08-29

The House of Seven Corpses was one of my favorite late night spooky movies that my brother and I would tune in on NYC's channel 9 or Boston's channel 36 beamed into our living room in upstate NY on early cable, sans the bells and whistles that today's teens enjoy. We used to take bets on who killed the ageing diva's (Faith Domergue's) cat Cleon (My money was on the director of the film within a film, John Ireland) as well as wonder why a witch like Mrs. Beale (at the start of the movie, they were re-enacting a seance scene for the movie the soon to be victims were shooting) would need a gun to protect herself from the Zombie she was summoning? John Carradine (who interrupts the seance/film shoot at the beggining of the movie) joined an excellent cast, including Faith and John, to put together a scary little film on a shoestring budget that is still fun and suspenseful even after multiple viewings. OK, you have to suspend disbelief, but that goes for most movies that provide escapist entertainment. As for the movie being violent, next to watching the evening news these days "The House of Seven Corpses" looks like a quiet walk in the park! The DVD is a high quality "Image" release and is recently available at a bargain price on top of it. It was originally selling at a fairly high list price, it is now quite a bargain here at our favorite internet site, Amazon[.com]. The wonders of the American recession! Don't forget the popcorn and don't put out the cat! Do enjoy this film on a stormy night curled up on the coach preferably with company, or at least the cat.

3 out of 5 stars Utah Schlock-O-Rama!.......2002-08-13

Filmed in the Utah governor's mansion, this little cheap-o goodie is low on sense and high on atmosphere. It's highly entertaining, no matter how you choose to view it. On the one hand, it's actually pretty good as a simple, straightforward low-budget horror film; on the other, it's so cheaply made and (in some ways) nonsensical that you can good-naturedly laugh at it.

The story is a movie in a movie, which is always an enjoyable conceit: director John Ireland shoots a low-budget picture in the haunted Beal mansion, the owners of which all came to untimely and violent ends. The cast and crew don't take it very seriously, though middle-aged actress Faith Domergue (one of Howard Hughes' favorites, still surprisingly beautiful) wants to do her best since she is concerned about her future job prospects. In the interest of making the black-magic angle of the movie more believable - caretaker John Carradine heaps scorn on the filmmakers for their blatant disregard concerning the house's actual history - Domergue reads part of the script's ritual from a Latin translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead found among the Beals' belongings, and ends up raising a little real hell from the family graveyard...which causes the film's cast to gradually succumb to the same violent demises formerly suffered by the unfortunate Beals.

For as cheap a movie as this is, it's shot quite beautifully. The color is especially vivid and rich, and the cinematography is pretty crisp. There are looped sequences and some shoddy day-for-night photography, but it's rather impressive in spite of that. Dominic Frontiere's moody first season Outer Limits score is recycled for the soundtrack, to good effect. The actors play it all for real, and remain surprisingly credible. And the action sometimes surprisingly sucks you in, with a few gruesome and shuddery moments.

The film's logic flaws are legion - whoever dreamed up a Latin translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead, for instance? - and its ending won't stand up to close scrutiny. But if you're partial to those old Creepy and Eerie magazine stories that used to be put out by Warren Publishing, you'll love this flick - it performs exactly like those schlock horror mags read.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad for A Zombie Comedy.....with a Budget........2005-09-09

OK So its pretty much a rip-off of Re-Animator....the crazy Doctor/Mortician with a serum that can raise the dead he accidently made while trying to invent a new embalming fluid... and its fluorescent green too. Only thing is it only last for an hour...so he has to keep injecting the corpses and they become addicted to it, but in order for them to get their fix, they need to do his evil bidding...killing off the townspeople, including his ex-wife, who are trying to shut his mortuary down to build a shopping mall. It is more of a Comedy, and i did get a few chuckles out of it (a zombie with a boner...funny stuff!). The zombies look good, and there is plenty of gore, many severed limbs and even some flesh eating! Some of the Zombies can talk and they are able to understand and take orders (the morticain explains that there is some Brain damage, depending on how long they were dead) The movie was entertaining and I didnt have my finger on the fast forward button (unlike some of the other so called zombie films that I have seen lately). I will gladly add this to my Zombie DVD collection! The DVD itself is bare bones... There Isn't even a Title Menu, No scene selection, and No extras. Just one Trailer at the begining, and then goes right into the movie (there are some chapter stops) I also Don't know why this is hard to find, I only seen it at Amazon (not even any on eBay) the ship date was 5-6 weeks, then the day my copy was shipped from Amazon they changed its status to "Currently Unavailable"....hmmm?...wonder why??? I would say if your a Zombie fan check it out, its at least worth a rental...if you can find it anywhere.

The DVD also features an introduction and a 20-minute interview with Grau ("I hope you will suffer profoundly," he jokes in the opening), as well as a gallery of posters and stills, TV ads, and radio spots. --Sean Axmaker

1 out of 5 stars What the heck was this supposed to be?.......2006-07-01

I think Rob Zombie is great. I think campy horror is great. I think scary horror is great. I even think campy, scary, creepy, odd, shocking horror is great. This was nothing like any of those.

Quick bullet points:
- No discernable plot.
- The gore was pointless, boring, and broke the 4th wall.
- Actors were not just bad, they were not remotely believable in their terror or their acting.
- Villain.. not scary, humorous, and had no motivation.
- while some visuals are good, even the setup creepy (wannabe)character was not believable, and more annoying than anything.
- Did I mention no plot?
- I can never get that hour and a half of my life back.
- Editing was a crime!

1 out of 5 stars WORST MOVIE EVER MADE!!!! SORRY PEOPLE!.......2006-06-06

Wow, this was the worst movie I have ever seen in my whole entire life. Terrible acting, to much gore, hated the storyline! It was dumb.
It was about a group of four people whos car breaks down and they end up going to this house filled with freaks. Little did they know that they start disappering one by one. Getting tortured by freakish looking people who don't give a dam if your alvie or dead. And if your alive, you won't be if you stay with these people.
Now, Im a Texas Chainsaw Massacare fan and i hated this movie. It was to gory for me, the plot was stupid, and and i don't recommend it to anyone.
(0 stars, actually)

4 out of 5 stars FUN HORROR MOVIE.......2006-05-11

1 out of 5 stars rob zombie is a freak.......2006-04-29

ok sooo i bought this movie and just sold it to blockbuster in less than 5 hours of owning it, me n my gf and her brother watched this and could not believe how stupid/wierd/most of all disturbing this movie was, i LOVE horror movie, im right along with that other guy who gave this 2 stars. But if u really think about, this movie is kinda like sum stoner movie, like, u gotta be high to understand it (think about all this flash scenes every 5 minutes that are so colorful and wierd)so i mean, i dont smoke, so maybe thats why i dont like it. This film was just way to out there for me, and way to creepy, creepy in a bad way, i like being scared and seein gore, but, cmon at least make it have a understanding plot/storyline, not just for the fact of crazyness, cuz that doesnt make a good film at all. Overall, this is Lowbudget stoner [...].

and PS, rob zombie, ur new cd [...].

5 out of 5 stars Zombie rules with a mighty horror contribution!.......2006-03-23

Whatever the publics verdict was... I have to say I loved everything about this film. It brought back feelings not seen since "Tourist Trap", & "Texas Chainsaw M" - A very insane film with a mix of interesting characters that has "Tod McFarlane dolls" written all over them. Very impressive Rob!
ps. Drop me a line ... I got some new film pitch ideas for ya

1 out of 5 stars Infinitely pretentious and mind-numbingly boring.......2005-11-12

This must be one of those new-fangled art house movies or some such. It's pure drivel, but every line, every movement is treated as if it encapsulates enlightenment itself. Watching A Chronicle of Corpses is like watching one of those nonsensical Calvin Klein ads - only this lasts almost an hour and a half and features no attractive women. Everything happens at the most mind-numbingly slowest of paces, and dramatic pauses are everywhere. When they actually talk, the characters rarely even look in the general direction of one another - they deliver most of their lines while turned to the side and staring off into space. Since this is so obviously artsy-fartsy, I tried to give the film the benefit of the doubt - but, after about an hour, I was purged of any good feelings whatsoever. And so it is that I declare A Chronicle of Corpses one of the most nonsensical, overly pretentious, staggeringly boring films I've ever encountered in my life. I don't know who these people are out there comparing this "visionary" film to the likes of Carnival of Souls or Night of the Living Dead. Andrew Repasky McElhinney, who was 22 when he made this film, is no George Romero - he's not even an Ed Wood. My theory is that the unprecedented pretentiousness of the film compels some folks (i.e., smarmy critics) to say they liked it rather than confess the truth. I would not recommend this film to any horror fan (or anyone else, for that matter). Take it from this horror fan - you will be disappointed in A Chronicle of Boredom - oops, I mean Corpses.

But wait, you say. It can't be THAT boring, can it? Yes, it is. Aren't there some murders in this film? Well, there are some murders, but you only get a remotely decent glimpse at one of them. As for the characters, I can assure you that you won't care one iota if any or all of them get killed. These aren't even proper characters; they're just people who keep walking in and out (in basically slow motion, of course) of the picture. They are supposedly some aristocratic family that has fallen on hard times at some point in the first half of the 19th century. Apparently, the ability to speak only in monotone is a genetic trait passed on from one generation to the next. Certain types of insects live, breed, and die inside the dramatic pauses that plague every conversation in this movie. What about the cinematography? Isn't it supposed to be very good? Well, may be it is, maybe it isn't. When the story is as excruciatingly boring as this is, who really cares about shadows and angles?

1 out of 5 stars CRAP.......2005-03-07

My father orederd this for me from some catalogue knowing im a big horror film fan , so is he. Now itwas an absolutely horible and boring movie. But i will keep it because it was a gift from him to me.

1 out of 5 stars Watching your great grandmother eat peas is more exciting..........2004-10-31

This movie is horribly boring - the acting is laughable. I am sure that the director's cinematic interpretation of Bataille's "The Eye" is much more interesting than this poor poor movie. Stay away from this unless you want to see a prime example of what happens when a young filmmaker tries to be a Prima Donna and fails miserably.

2 out of 5 stars Dullsville.......2004-02-16

It's been a few years since I saw this film. The director was touring it around to colleges and the art house scene and I was very excited to see an independently produced horror film, and an arty independent horror film no less.
Unfortunately, I left disappointed. According to the filmmaker, the piece was envisioned as something that people would want to hang on their walls (now possible thanks to plasma screens) like a painting. This explains the excruciating long takes and the fact that there is a grand total of one moving shot in the whole thing. To some extend, the film succeeds on this level. There are some very pretty shots here and there and the historically accurate locations provide a great background. (It was filmed in and around historical sites preserved from colonial times.)
While the decent photography and beautiful locations elevate the film slightly, the writing pulls it back into the abyss. Arty intentions aside, the story boils down to the thoroughly exhausted slasher formula in which the characters are picked off one at a time by a psycho with an unconvincing back-story.
In the end A Chronicle of Corpses is an interestingly photographed but languidly paced period piece with a few clever ideas that can't rise above its unoriginal plotting.

1 out of 5 stars Geez...............2006-02-26

Thank goodness I bought this movie cheap!!! Saying it is one hell of a great horror movie, I was anxious to see it. Boy, did that soon change. This movie is stupid, stupid, stupid!!!!!! Even the gore in this movie does not make it deserve more than one star in my book. Horrible acting, poor writing and cheap filming! Rob Zombie can do better than this...... I hope! Don't waste your money!!!

1 out of 5 stars Long, drawn-out, and boring.......2006-02-07

What a waste of film. I didn't expect much and I was disappointed. The movie was so long and the whole time I was stuck waiting for a reason that the production company paid money to put this on dvd... still wondering. The only highlights were Baby being SO fine and Captain Spaulding having a great personality (he was only in about five minutes of the movie though). Finally, I came to the conclusion that Rob Zombie made this film as a joke so that when people saw it and said that he had no business in Hollywood, he could surprise them with a better film on his next try... then I saw the Devil's Rejects and I'm just left scratching my head. What were any of these people thinking?
