Description

From horror legend Clive Barker comes "the ultimate in fear!" Dan Scapporotti, Cinefantastique. Some call him the Black Prince of Hell. Some call him the Angel of Suffering. The horror fans everywhere, he's Pinhead (Doug Bradley), the urbane, spike-faced minion of evil with a bloodlust for human souls. Now Pinhead's back in the most diabolical Hellraiser of them all - Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth! TV reporter Joey Summerskill (Terry Farrell, Back To School) is on assignment at a local hospital when a bloodied teenage boy is rushed into the emergency room. As Joey watches, the writhing boy is literally torn apart by chains impaling his body. Fleeing the carnage, Joey follows the victim's girlfriend to a downtown nightclub, the Boiler Room. In the apartment above the Boiler Room rests the owner's newly purchased sculpture: A pillar etched with distorted figures and faces. Among the frozen images is Pinhead. Tonight he shall be released.

To make it once and for all clear for all of you fans: This Paramount DVD features the R-rated cut of Hellraiser III.
Since I still own the unrated Laserdisc version (which runs exactly 97 minutes), I was pretty much able to perfectly compare this DVD to the LD. And the DVD is definitely the R-rated cut. The advertised 93 minutes for this DVD-version are correct.

1 out of 5 stars A boring let down.......2007-02-01

When J.P. (Kevin Bernhardt), a playboy club owner, buys a mysterious-looking puzzle box and mistakes it for a work of art, he has no idea that Pinhead, "the Black Pope of Hell" (Doug Bradley), is trapped inside. Playing tricks on his captor's mind, Pinhead tries his best to manipulate J.P. into breaking him out of his prison -- that is, until an astute journalist (Terry Farrell) begins to suspect something.

Watching "Hellraiser III", it's obvious that the producers were trying to make a poor man's "Nightmare on Elm Street" rather than a proper continuation of the first two films. "Pinhead" spouts bad one-liners like Freddy Krueger in the lesser "Elm Street" entries; and a significant part of the premise even involves the hero having dreams about her father's death.

The result is a watered-down, unsteady film that contains only a small morsel of what made Clive Barker's first two "Hellraiser" films so interesting, substituting tired slasher film ingredients instead. A real let-down from the first two films.

After ordering my copy from Hong Kong and Canada they have finally given the US a break releasing this installment of the hellraiser series. Greatful to have a good transfer of the film I'm somewhat depressed at what I've gotten. After spending so many years in Limbo, the best we can do is a few small features?

Feature film only DVDs sell for way less today! I can't believe the price is so high. Just another DVD to hit collectors where it hurts... the pocket! Nothing to offer but the film. Although it's nice to finally have it, it's not worth the price.

It also said the film is the R rated Version. I"m not sure if this is the unrated one or not. I compared it with my Hong Kong version and I remember comparing my Hong kong with my VHS Unrated. I'm not sure if it's R or not. If it's the Rated version, that's just inappropriate! They should have at least left the option to play unrated by adding missing portions to the film and putting them in the extra features to watch seperately.

When it comes down to it, only a true obsessed collector should waste money on it. And those who released it with barely any energy into explaining what they produced should be ashamed. Hell knows, I feel ashamed for buying it. I had the same thing on two other DVDs and there's nothing that special on this one. At least Canada and Hong Kong earned their 5$

3 out of 5 stars Good for a few laughs!.......2006-09-05

The third installment of the Hellraiser series is VERY bad. The Cenobites are what makes the Hellraiser movies so enjoyable...but they went very wrong in this sequel. I think one of the writers for this film must have previously worked at Mad Magazine. A Cenobite with a TV camera for an eye? One that throws CDs like ninja stars? How about the firebreathing Cenobite that uses a martini shaker as a molotov cocktail? Wow.

In addition to ruining the cenobites, the acting is horrificcant. Yes, the acting is so bad that I just made up a word to describe it. This film really deserves a 2 star rating, but I bumped it up to 3 just because I got a few good laughs at the movie and, to its credit, there are a few good kill scenes. But I'd only recommend this film to the die hard Hellraiser fan.

2 out of 5 stars Pinhead's Third Outing Needs To Come To America!.......2005-06-12

Look, I'm not going to tell you how great this movie is, but this is truly the last of the really cool Hellraiser films. For all Star Trek:DS9 fans, it stars a young Terry Farrell, who you might also recently recognize from reruns of Ted Danson's CBS show Becker.

Anyway, the true reason why I'm writing this is to ask each of you to start some fire to get this properly released on DVD! Y'see, this version been floating around since the dawn of DVD, but it's definitely the weakest DVD presentation of all the films, while being one of the best of the series!

This disc is only in Fullframe, black-sparkly weak picture, only 2.0 audio, lame menu, and with no extras whatsoever! However, it does feature the UNCUT version of the film, and if you've only seen it in the theatre or on cable, this version's ALOT more gorier. But seriously, Anchor Bay should properly release this here in America (this is a Canadian release, in the same NTSC format as USA). They did a great job on Parts One & Two, why not this one? Probably due to it's all Heavy Metal soundtrack, and getting those past musical rights for re-release on DVD can sometimes be extremely hard, and Anchor Bay (or other release companies) probably said "It's the Third one, why bother?"! But this film deserves it, it's one of my top favorites of the series and definitely earns the right. So, start one of those online campaigns I've seen for other lost movie classics, and give "Hell On Earth" it's respect!

P.S. I've rated this disc overall only 2 stars, but the movie deserves 5 all on it's own!

P.S.S.: And to all the other reviews who didn't like this one, all I can say is two things: One, you mean you didn't like all the new Cenobites at all....really? And two, have you seen Parts 4 & 5 yet? If not, see those two & then tell me this is lame.

1 out of 5 stars That was weak folks...that was weeeeeeeeaaak!!!!.......2005-06-06

To be quite frank, I did not think the first one was that good, but when I when I watched the 3rd installment of the Hellraiser series called "Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth", I just kept rolling my eyes and sighing the entire movie. There is absolutely no element of horror within this movie whatsoever...in other words, it just doesn't cut the mustard as far as a horror movie is concerned. Yeah, there is a lot of blood and gore, just like the first, but once again, that is not enough to make a good horror movie. This movie is a very weak horror movie and I give it ONE STAR and that is being oh so generous my friends. After seeing "Hellraiser", "Candyman" and "Hellraiser III", I must admit that I am completely unimpressed with the ability of Clive Barker to produce a good horror movie...frankly, "Hellraiser III" just flat out sucks...it's not the worst horror movie I've ever seen, but it sure is bad. I have not seen "Hellraiser II" or any of the Candyman sequels yet, but if it is anything like what I've seen so far from Clive Barker, I better pack my cooler jam full of beer because it's going to be another long night of pure and unaldulterated crap for me to watch and another night of unintentionally funny horror movies, which is so common from the supposedly "horror movies" of the 90's and today. Why do I waste my time on this garbage?

2 out of 5 stars Pearls to Swine.......2005-03-24

Like many horror films, and nearly all horror sequals, this was a bad movie with some very cool scenes. Buy it used, enjoy them, and lament what could have been.

4 out of 5 stars Good Horror, A step away from the Origins..........2005-03-12

The mythology in this film is probably more developed than in the previous two films. This mythos, coupled together with the probable edict to develop the franchise side of things may explain the way it turned out.
Joey is an amazing character, and does some "faith" filled actions based on the character of the military man whose soul is at the heart of "Pinhead". The core of this film lays the basis for the other films, and in this mythology, the structure of the stories can be found; some later HELLRAISER films have stepped away from this side at their own cost, but if you see the Stories as different takes on a form of "Morality play" then it may make more sense.
Not to say that these films have to make sense, in fact the dry humour of PINHEAD works well when he is separate from his own soul , and this is why in the next film, Pinhead says "I am so exquisitely empty".
Anyways, the film is worth a watch as a bridge between the first two, and the following films. If the writers used this film as more of a jumping off point, then the while Hellraiser mythos has the ability to create many films, and expand a whole series of very interesting possibilities.
Ultimately, the orgy of violence at the nightclub is the center-piece, and so in that respect it is a little slash-gore, but there is enough additional mythos to have kept me very intrigued.
