The feature film debut of wrestling superstar John Cena, The Marine offers an agreeable smorgasbord of slam-bang action for viewers willing to swallow whole their disbelief for the sake of enjoying the plot. Cena, who is one of the most animated performers in the wrestling arena, is saddled with a taciturn role as a former Marine with an authority problem who tangles with dangerous jewel thieves (led by Robert Patrick) after they take his wife (Kelly Carlson of Nip/Tuck) hostage. Cena handles the physical duties of his role with ease, and former commercial director John Bonito offers him a frantic array of situations in which to display his prowess. On the whole, however, the picture is very light in the logic department, and filled with cardboard characters that quickly wear out their welcome (save Patrick, who tosses villainous one-liners with scene-stealing brio). Extras include a making-of featurette, which includes talking-head interviews with the cast, crew, and WWE head/producer Vince McMahon, as well as a barrage of shorter featurettes on Cena's rise to fame and the film's premiere at Camp Pendleton. --Paul Gaita

Rent it first - you've been warned........2007-07-02
This movie is almost a joke. The beginning starts off quite nicely with our "Marine" taking down 9 terrorist with a machine gun and hand-to-hand combat, without even being touched. The problem is later in the movie our same "Marine" is knocked down with a fire extinguisher, a branch, and a bar. Apparently terrorists trained in the military with machine guns are much less capable than a man with a fire extinguisher.
Second, the "Marine" was knocked unconscious by both the fire extinguisher and tree branch yet being punched hard multiple times tied to a chair, he is left un-phased.
Third, our "Marine" seems to get punched a lot for being such a skilled fighter. Even going up against hill billies he gets thrown through a table. Which also shows hill billies are skilled in hand to hand combat, a reality this movie taught me.
Fourth, no one seems to care that our well respected "Marine" leaves a wounded cop unattended and steals a cop car. Throughout the movie he causes hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage without being reprimanded.
Fifth, a good portion of the movie consist of our "Marine" following people through the woods. That's it.... Wow.... Exciting.....
Sixth, our marine jumps out of a flaming car over the edge of a cliff. 10 minutes later he is walking on land. Apparently it is left to our imagination how marines can fly.
Seventh, When our "Marine" gives CPR its just pathetic. It looks funny to begin with because John Cena's arms are as big as his wifes body, but its even worse because he doesn't do CPR right to begin with.
I'll be fair, there were good fight scenes. There was a girl-girl fight scene (which lasted about 1 minute) though it was much more entertaining than the WWE girl-girl "matches". This movie was not action packed, it had action, but was not action packed.
Run Cena Run!.......2007-06-30
Thank god I borrowed this movie from my roommate. I doubt I would have ever even rented it if I was back in the states (I'm in Iraq right now). This is going to be a short review for a pretty bad movie.
Before you read my review, please take not that I'm an action movie fan. Whether it's a good one with a pretty decent plot or a fun one where you can drink and laugh to it with its whack out plot and crazy actions scenes. This movie just fell short of anything fun or good.
The beginning intro with Cena rescuing some marine buddies was action packed but choreographed horribly. It looked incredibly fake. My hopes for a decent movie faded quickly.
One of the cooler parts of the movie was a bank heist that was led by Rome (Robert Patrick better known as T1000 from T2). If it wasn't for the horrible direction and script, Patrick would've pulled this character off in a very cool way. This scene gave me hope for an ok movie to maybe get a little drunk to and laugh at the over the top action scenes.
Then comes the kidnapping. It felt like 40 minutes of the movie we watched Cena run and jump through the woods trying to rescue his girl from the bad guys. Pretty annoying.
Then we see the bad guys take refuge in an abandoned bar in the middle of a swamp that the police were JUST in. Honestly I believe there would've been cops that would've stayed there JUST in case this exact scenario would have happened...but whatever... I dont expect common sense to happen in action movies... especially bad ones like this. So we have Cena taking out bad guy after bad guy here till the oh so predictable twist of the movie happens.
If you like explosions, trust me about this, you'll see massive ones every 25 minutes of the movie it seems like.
Also Kate (Kelly Carlson from Nip/Tuck) played a pretty good part for such a bad role. What really makes me irritated about her part though was that she gave the bad guys SUCH hell that there is no way they wouldn't have just killed her to get rid of the crap she was putting them through. Like I said earlier, I dont mind cheese in bad action movies, but this was just driving me nuts.
I gave it 2 stars mainly for Robert Patrick. Like I said earlier, he played his part as well as he could for the craptastic script. I would love to see him with a similar role in a movie that's in better hands.
Forget politics - switch your brain to "Commando" mode!.......2007-06-14
You pays your money and you takes your choice. When you go to see a movie like this, you should know what you're in for. There's going to be a lot of bad guys, and they're going to be really bad. There's going to be a damsel in distress. There's going to be a surprise bad guy. And, last but not least, there's going to be a good guy who is good and tough beyond belief.
John Triton (John Cena) is an heroic ex-marine whose wife, Kate (Kelly Carlson) is kidnapped by a brutal gang of jewel thieves led by Rome (Robert Patrick), who kills with glee and without remorse, which doesn't set him apart from his psychopathic gang members. John takes out after them. You get the feeling that John can take on anything up to the size of a platoon without much of a problem. While credibility might suffer during his chase, it's still fun. You will rarely see a human being with arms the size of Cena's.
Written (Michelle Gallagher and Alan McElroy) and directed (John Bonito) with humor and pace, what surprised me about it was that the acting is uniformly good, including Cena. This is a tongue-in-cheek chase film with some absurdly unbelievable stunts and special effects, but it's all done on a level that nobody takes very seriously.
Although there is a lot of violence, it's not graphic in the sense that we see people's heads being blown off. I was tired and sleepy when I attended the film, but never even felt a twinge of nodding off.
Perfect for a saturday night with friends after a long week of work.
it's all action..........2007-06-04
If pure action entertains you, then give this one a look. It's certainly not academy award material but lots of action and fun to watch!
Just a wanna be Rambo.......2007-05-28
If you are looking for a movie with bad acting-cliche lines-and never gonna happen action sequences this is the movie for you! Otherwise, I wouldn't even waste a Netflix rental on it.

After Davy Crockett scored a huge hit on TV and in theaters, Walt Disney looked for stories about other American heroes for Disneyland; among the ones he chose were Elfego Baca and Marion Francis, the Swamp Fox. Of the two, Elfego Baca, which ran for 10 installments from October 1958 through March 1960, is the more entertaining. Robert Loggia cuts a properly dashing figure as Baca, the New Mexico gunman who became a lawyer. In both capacities, he fought for justice and the spirit of the law, rather than its letter: If he found a law unjust--or inconvenient--he bent or ignored it to achieve his always honorable ends. Baca also stood out as a rare example of a Latino hero at time when Hispanics were rarely seen on American TV. Elfego Baca proved popular enough to be recut and released theatrically outside the United States.
During the Revolutionary War, Colonel Francis Marion led a string of unconventional campaigns against the British in the Carolinas. His skill at staging raids, then vanishing into the trackless marshes earned him the title "The Swamp Fox." As Marion, Leslie Nielsen lacks Loggia's panache. He's also required to make rather heavy-handed speeches about the rightness of the American cause and its inevitable victory that bring the story to screeching halt. And he always seems to pick the most obtuse members of the British army as targets. Although The Swamp Fox ran for six installments, from October 1959 through January 1961, it was eclipsed by more exciting Disney Americana, notably Texas John Slaughter (1958-1961). (Unrated, suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
Description
Inspired by true life heroes, these are two of Walt's most exciting television shows, ELFEGO BACA and THE SWAMP FOX. Elfego Baca is a gunfighter (Robert Loggia) in the old west who changes his ways to become sheriff and then a lawyer. Elfego deals with rampaging cowboys, outlaws and more in this exciting series about law and order on the frontier. The Swamp Fox stars Leslie Nielsen (who starred in the classic film "Forbidden Planet," and would later become famous for the "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" movies) as Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion. This patriot fought the British using unusual methods, and became known as "The Swamp Fox." In this superb series, Marion matches wits with the Tories in a story of adventure and action. Bonus materials will include an interview with Robert Loggia, star of "Elfego Baca;" "Tales of Courage and Adventure" a featurette that examines the origins of these historical figures and the fascinating story of their lives, still frame galleries from these TV shows, and more. Introductions by Leonard Maltin.

Nobody knows but maybe Disney does.......2007-07-05
Dear Disney People,
In homage to the theme song from the delightful SWAMP FOX series, I now sing to you ---
Swamp Fox, Swamp Fox
Tail on his hat
Nobody knows
Where the other five shows are at
Swamp Fox, Swamp Fox
Disney makes me blue
All I can say is
Disney, what the heck is wrong with you?
(Needless to say... to issue only three of the eight Swamp Fox shows is utterly pathetic. Shame on you, Disney.)
Sincerely,
t.g. randini
Cheapness of Disney.......2007-04-29
I fondly remembered both Elfego Baca and the Swamp Fox series from the Disney TV shows. I initially watched them in b/w TV so it was a pleasure of see them again in color as Walt Disney had the foresight to filmed in color back then even although most of the TVs in United States were black and white.
Both series proves to be interesting, entertaining and exciting. They were well acted, well scripted and educational. While the Swamp Fox is the weaker of the two, I thought it was pretty enjoyable series. Elfego Baca on the other hand, was one of the most exciting western TV shows I have seen as a kid and got me into Gunsmokes and other westerns. Although some reviewers wrote that these shows were bit dated, I don't believed that to be the case. When I saw them again as grown adult, they proves just as good as I remembered them as a child. The credit I think goes to the Walt Disney and his production people who created these shows.
Like almost every other reviewers here, I am totally angered and appalled by Disney's decision only to released three of ten Elfego Baca episodes and three of eight Swamp Fox episodes. It almost an insult, a slap in a face at such cheapness and pettiness. The two stars I gave reflects nothing on the shows on the DVD but on Disney's decision making process that only shows one-third of the episodes of each series. They probably counted on folks like me who have fond memories of these shows to buy this DVD release despite of its masculated package. They were right much to my personal regret. (If Disney at that time didn't want to release a big DVD, they could have done the Scarcrow series and Johnny Tremain series, I think Scarcrow is three while Tremain was two episodes long.)
This DVD release does not come with my recommendation unless you happened to be a die-hard fan of the original shows. Even then, its pretty questionable if you should get. If so, try to get them as cheap as possible since to be perfectly honest, its not worth the price Amazon or Disney is asking for them.
Great choice -- terrible effort.......2007-03-24
I grew up in Charleston, SC and knew all about Francis Marion (The "Swamp Fox") when I was a kid. One of the first books I ever read was about Marion and his band of militia. I loved seeing the Disney episodes I saw as a kid again on cable several years ago and taped several of them, so when I saw this show had made the cut for the Treasures Series, I was excited...but like most of you, I'm disappointed that they only found fit to put 3 episodes of the series on the DVD. Now that I think about, I think these 3 are the only ones I ever saw on the Disney Channel. Disney sure is adept at biting the hands that feed them for sure. Most of the people buying the Treasures series are hard-core Disney fans who grew up watching this stuff in theaters and on television. Why would you serve up a half-baked effort to the people that have remained loyal to Disney all these years? (Rhetorical question I guess, I'm sure you all know the answer to that one.) How hard would it have been to get the other 5 shows on this? Geez.
I'm surprised they haven't released "Scarecrow of Romney Marsh" in this series yet considering there were only 3 episodes of that one, and there are evidently people so eager to see it on DVD they're writing reviews of a non-existent product LOL...
http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Alias-Scarecrow-Patrick-McGoohan/dp/B0001I55T2
This is another show I taped years ago off of the Disney Channel and transferred to DVD myself. Hopefully they'll package it in a Treasures Series too, and not leave out any episodes. Disney's got so much stuff they could put on DVD that people my age would buy, I really don't understand what they're waiting for. Maybe by the time I'm dead they'll put out all those great Wonderful World of Disney shows. I'm not counting on Song of the South, that's another whole head-bashing-against-the-wall conundrum.
Elfego Baca and The Swamp Fox- Legendary Heroes.......2007-02-12
Swamp Fox was excellent. It bought back so many childhood memories. It was an outstanding buy. I highly recommend it!
More Legendary Heroes from Uncle Walt.......2007-01-03
After the huge success of Davy Crockett during the first season of the TV show "Disneyland," Walt Disney began searching for other heroes from American history for the show. Two of the ones he settled on are Elfego Baca and The Swamp Fox. Three episodes each of their TV run are included in this two-disc set.
Disc one features Elfego Baca (Robert Loggia). He was a Mexican American who lived in New Mexico during the late 1800's. He started out as a Sheriff but gave that up to become a lawyer. He always helped out the poor and downtrodden, as long as they were innocent. We get episodes 1, 2, and 5. I think they skipped to 5 since that episode featured Disney vet Annette Funicello.
Disc two takes us even further back in time to the Revolutionary War. Francis Marion, aka The Swamp Fox (Leslie Nielsen) was a hero of the war who led his troops in many raids against the British in the Carolinas. This set features the first three episodes. They end on a downer, and the teaser for the next episode is included. Man, it makes me wish they had more in the set.
Since the shows were originally filmed in color, that's what we get here, although the intros from the TV show are often in black and white. The picture has many flaws, betraying the show's age. Still, they are very watchable and look like the lavish productions they are. Extras include an interview with Robert Loggia on disc one and a documentary on Disney's history lessons on disc two.
Even though the shows are almost 50 years old, they are still entertaining. Fans of history or Disney will be glad to add this set to their collection.

Horror vet Wes Craven wrote and directed this campy swamp romp adapted from the DC Comic of the same name. Adrienne Barbeau stars as cleavangelically blessed government agent Alice Cable, sent to the bayou to guard the brilliant Dr. Alec Holland. Holland is using recombinant DNA to create "a plant with an animal's aggressive power for survival." Let's hope none of that volatile secret formula gets spilled! Swamp Thing is an unusual mix of monster movie and superhero flick, but definitely an enjoyable ride. Craven deliberately uses comic-book-style wipes and transitions to keep us from taking anything too seriously, and Louis Jourdan keeps up the tone with his camp performance as the evil Arcane. Also keep an eye out for young Reggie Batts in a terrific deadpan performance as Jude, the helpful gas station attendant. --Ali Davis
Description
Deep in Florida's darkest everglades, a brilliant scientist, Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise), and a sexy government agent, Alice Cable (Adrienne Barneau), have developed a secret formula that could end world hunger and change civilisation forever. Little do they know, however, that their arch nemesis, Arcane (Louis Jourdan), is plotting to steal the serum for his own selfish schemes. Looting the lab and kidnaping Cable, Arcane douses Holland with the chemicals and leaves him for dead in the swamp. Mutated by his own formula, Holland becomes "Swamp Thing"-a half plant superhero who will stop at nothing to rescue the beautiful Cable and defeat the evil Arcane...even if it costs him his life!

A 80s, B movie, comic book version of a cross between the original King Kong and Frankenstein........2007-06-20
Wes craven has made terrifying and disturbing movies prior to this with The last house on the left and The Hills have eyes. I think he was doing a throw back to old school monster movies or horror comics as scenes flow like pages of a comic.
The movie is fun. It has some cheesy lines and more catch phrases than i've ever heard in one movie and some things don't add up. You could be there watching with friends like, "grenades don't effect him but a machete is gonna do him in, how many times is she going to fall down, I bet when Adrienne Barbeau saw the sun make his arm grow back she was hoping it would shine somewhere else cause once you've had tree you never go bark. Reggie Batts who plays Jude is hilarious he's about 13 and apparantly owns his own gas station, a boat (with a black doll tied to the front for whatever reason), and delivers slow funny lines from behind his huge glasses.
The movie has a creative and original idea, a serum or a potion that enhances what you are on the inside (this could be alcohol for some) as Dr. Anton Arcane finds out he is not a genius but a monster. Wes Craven will show his creativity a few years later with another modern movie monster i think you might have heard of him Freddy Krueger. I think swamp thing was him (craven) paying homage to a different time in horror the classic monster movie, maybe the kind that he grew up watching and was perhaps inspired by Then in a Nightmare on Elm st he does his version of a modern monster which will turn into an icon.
Swamp thing is also in the 101 best horror movies you've never seen book by Fangoria.
Which copy should you buy?.......2007-05-08
Just to get it out of the way, Swamp Thing is okay. However, it did spawn the much better sequel Return Of The Swamp Thing in all its campy goodness.
But, there are 2 distinct versions out there. If you want the US version, then buy the RED title cover. It is also 91 minutes. If you're looking for the added nudity version, then buy the GREEN title cover. The run time for the green version is 93 minutes. Then again, it makes more sense that the less butchered version is 2 minutes longer.
Plain English: RED = Less nekkid, GREEN = more nekkid. Get it?
A Great Movie.......2007-05-02
Swamp Ting is one of DC Comics Second String Super-Heroes and Wes Craven does a great job with the character. Sure there was some "dramatic license" like the fact that Cable was not a romantic interest in the comics and Arcane was never the romantic man who had women fawning over him as Jordan has, but the movie is excellent. I still need to buy the DVD for the Region I live in and only able to view my copy on my computer, but the movie is up there with Superman the Movie, the first Batman movie with Keaton & Nicholson, Batman Begins, the Spider-Man movies, X-Men movies and the like. Sure Swamp-Thing is not for everyone, but the characterizations of the characters are down pat. A great flick!
Much beauty in the swamps.......2006-11-10
The acting is good, the flowers and trees are breathtaking.
100% Absolute bad stinky Cheese.......2006-11-04
I'm pretty picky with my "so bad it's good" type of flicks but if your not then this one is right up your alley. Wes Craven's "Swamp Thing" was a childhood favorite of mine but it definitely belongs back there somewhere in my childhood memories. Simply defines the cheesey B action/monster flicks of the 80's(a stupid groaning monster,a bogus storyline,a rambo head band, some bad acting, nonsensical explosions & a great baloob shot)truly one of Wes Craven's worst films to date. When you watch this flick you can't help but to be shocked that this is made by the same man that just a few years later gives us one of the greatest horror films of all time in "A Nightmare On Elm St".

Cheesy cover!.......2007-02-07
This is a good old-fashioned movie that is similar to the first. If you liked that, you will enjoy this as well. If you don't like dated movies, you will think this is silly. I wish I lived near Boggy Creek.......
peee uuuu.......2006-12-30
this is nothing but a old fart telling the story of the first movie. DVD makes a good coaster.
A noteable and worthy entry into Cinema Du Sasquatch! .......2006-01-17
This movie is alot of fun. It's Bigfoot down south again scaring cute girls with their 1980's apparel on and basically just being a cool monster. In many ways this is superior to "Legend of Boggy Creek". It's better directed and has characters that are interesting. Also, the scene a night with the sonar blips is actually kind of scary. It's not as bad as alot of viewers say.
Check it out.
Driving down the road, lookin' for a waffle house, drinkin' lots of wild turkey.......2005-10-03
If you're a bigfoot movie fan, this is a must-see; but you may want to check out the version on the DVD set 'Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection - Volume 5', who summarizes the movie as "When you major in boggy creek studies, you can pretty much write your own ticket".
Boggy Creek 2, or Put a Shirt on that Boy!.......2005-09-24
You can't blame Charles Pierce for wanting to go back to that Boggy Creek well again after the first movie, but this time he pulls up a bucket full of fetid water. This movie is all sorts of wrong! From casting himself in the role of "Doc" to putting his own son in a large supporting role, sans shirt for a majority of the running time, Pierce misfires on almost every level. The flashback stories almost brought back the flavor of the original Boggy Creek (the outhouse scene alone is a hoot), but then he offsets that with the hilarious "mad dog!" scene. By the time Old Man Crenshaw shows up, the wheels totally fly off this shaky cart and promptly bursts into flames! Being a bigfoot sub-genre fanatic, I feel justified buying this title, but do not see spinning the DVD as often as the far superior The Legend of Boggy Creek. Where's Travis Crabtree when you really need him?!

Muppets 3-Pack.......2007-05-08
What is up with "Kermit's Swamp Years"?!! Why not, "The Muppet Movie" or "The Great Muppet Caper" with the other two movies? Who cares about "Kermit's Swamp Years"? They can only get you to buy this lousy movie by putting it in with the other two. They couldn't sell it by itself. This 3 pack should be at least $5.00 cheaper because of "swamp years".

In the language of hip-hop, the MC raps on top of the beats. The DJ--or turntablist--supplies the beats. Doug Pray's lively documentary is a tribute to these unsung heroes of the "scratch." His approach is neither dry nor academic and is designed as much for the masters of the form as for the fans. Pray was also behind Hype!, which focused on the Seattle scene in the 1980s and 1990s. In his 2002 follow-up, he travels as far back as the 1970s (DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa) and roams the U.S. from New York (Gang Starr's DJ Premier) to the Bay Area (DJ Shadow, Q-Bert). After watching the film and grooving to the beat, you're likely to wonder if there's a soundtrack to accompany it. Fortunately, there is--Bill Laswell, producer of Herbie Hancock's seminal "Rockit," is behind a compilation featuring many of the same artists celebrated in Scratch. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Director Doug Pray (Hype) pays tribute to the innovative art of DJing in the electrifying documentary Scratch. Featuring the most legendary figures in the DJ scene, Pray's film is at once a deeply insightful historical document and a highly entertaining glimpse into the world of underground hip-hop. Modern luminaries such as DJ Shadow, Mix Master Mike (of the Beastie Boys), DJ Q-bert, Rob Swift, and DJ Swamp are interviewed alongside living legends like Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzy Jay, and Grand Mixer DXT, in order to paint a broad, comprehensive picture of how DJing has evolved over the years.
Seamlessly cutting between interviews and actual footage filmed at several high-profile DJing contests including Skratchcon 2000 and the DMC U.S. Finals, Pray's film is a must-see for both seasoned fans and the uninitiated, a celebration of one of the late-20th century's most thrilling, original musical movements.
Customer Reviews:
Great, interesting, but not completely comprehensive.......2007-06-10
I would have liked to see this be more up to date, and a bit more comprehensive. The DVD case lists DJ Krush (whom I am a fan of) as one of the DJ's featured, but it only very quickly just shows him and mentions his name which I thought was a bit cheap. The piece on DJ Shadow was interesting. I like the different aspects the movie covers: technical, social, history, as well as a taste of some of the personalities.
DVD extras are interesting. Particularly some of the instructional how-to stuff. Almost makes me want to get some equipment and try it!
Absolutely Essential!.......2007-02-07
Goes down in my favorite hip-hop videos of all time.
My favorites are this, breakin, breakin 2, and freshest kids.
This actually helped lead me into breakdancing. From there I got How To Do The Robot - Breakdance Instructional DVD or Top 20 Breakdance Moves. These ones turned me from a hip-hop spectator into a serious breakdancer.
All of these are essential!
A genuine treat.......2007-01-12
From the opening sequence to the closing credits, this DVD presents the story of Hip Hop from its roots to present day. Impressive performances, interesting interviews and chock full of the people who made the music that influcenced almost all popular music of today. A must-see for any true Hip Hop fan.
Good documentary, but came up short in the trenches.........2006-05-13
This is a good documentary and I can appreciate that it was done since none of the pioneers put one out(like Crazy legz did for Freshest Kids). This documentary is more towards the general audience that don't have any knowledge of DJ'in or hip hop. But us old school guys won't get much out of it. There wasn't much of the history at all, especially during the 80's - unknown dj, hashim, mantronix, twilight22, magic mike, uncle jamm's army, even the original world class wreckin' cru (the "dr dre." scratch). Qbert was on here, but there was no mention of the IMAGINE battles they had in the San Francisco bay area during the mid 80's, im sure these battles where part of his inspirations. This would be like putting together a boxing documentary giving Joe Lewis & Rocky marciano 15 min, then jumping right to floyd mayweather & completely omitting Sugar Ray Leonard and Ali.
Overall, its decent, but falls short on a history lesson and us old schoolers wont' get much out of it.
some very good points .......2005-09-02
all of the above have good info, and I agree I would like to see a more varied mix, but show it to someone who has no idea about the scene, and they will be impressed.

lost in the everglades.......2007-01-18
Let me first say this is a very good film,my complaint is with the quality of the film/disc.The film can stand with any of the action/westerns out of the 50's .Gary Cooper as always is in great form and the supporting cast is good. The film though has a grainy look to it and the disc quality is fair to low.I guess for the price you can't be to picky. Some extras or behind the scenes look would be nice.A plus with the film is the locations that were used, a great look at the wilds of Florida.
Good. VERY Good........2006-11-13
Like many of the other reviewers, I saw this at the theater as a kid...actually a toddler...and it has stuck with me ever since. Oh, there are some faults with the script, and it isn't HIGH NOON, but then it wasn't meant to be. Nor was it produced as an historical documentary. What the movie DID do for me as a kid was spur an interest in reading about the Seminole Indians and Florida history. It's a good, VERY good action flick.
Great relived childhood adventure.......2006-07-30
Five stars for time travel to childhood! It was as interesting reading the reviews as seeing the movie again. Many reported things I could relate to. The quality of the digital version isn't great, but then again neither was the quality of the projection in the motion picture theatres where many of us saw the original movie as kids. The low quality actually contributed to the memory--somewhat like listening to a Bob Dylan album on a turntable rather than on a CD-- screeches from scratches are as much a part of the 60's era music as the songs themselves. I too related to recalling this as one of my most memorable movies as a kid, because of the action and the terror of trying to escape from a fierce enemy that you did NOT want to be caught by. Seen again as an adult, the effect was different--just an engaging, action-packed cornball Hollywood fantasy typical of the era.
This is fiction. It was a great boys' adventure film in its time. I never even thought of it as factual as a kid, despite being impressionable enough to have nightmares afterwards.
I could not relate to any reviewers who panned this film as an excuse to launch into their "whites" versus native American issues. Those folks should read some history in Julius Ceaser's journals and learn what happened to the white forest-dwelling Germanic tribes at the hands of the Romans--it is not so very different from what happened to native American tribes centuries later. Tribes and cultures of humans, in general, have not treated or portrayed others different from themselves at all well or accurately. In this movie, the Seminoles are portrayed with far more substance than other "Indians" in films of the 50's era--as competent warriors and formidable enemies with their own code. Other than when the purpose of the producer is a painstakingly accurate portrayal, entertainment is about the best one can expect from Hollywood. No one should expect an accurate rendition of history from 50s "westerns."
Sound quality.......2006-03-05
I was very disappointed at the sound quality of this video. The sound goes up and down and buzzes in various places.Have returned for replacement twice and so I have to believe the problem is with the Master Disc.
Old fashioned story with interesting location........2006-01-28
DD is a corny, old-fashioned movie that wins points for color location photography and a decent amount of action. The portrayal of the Seminole Indians is not particulary offensive, as they are seen as being excellent in battle tactics. The love interest bogs down the story and none of the characters really come to life, but there's a fight in a cool old Spanish fort, a great grassfire scene, and that underwater knife battle with Gary Cooper and the Seminole Chief. So far, nobody has mentioned the rubber alligator. I'm surprised the filmakers couldn't find one shot of an alligator swimming underwater so they pulled a rubber one along with a string. They even show it twice. We all hooted over that. As far as the DVD goes, the sound quality is poor with lots of distortion in the musical score. Most of the print looks good, but there are two times when inferior washed out footage is spliced in for several minutes. Still its a fun movie!

Customer Reviews:
Not a bad effort for a minor Marvel character.......2007-05-17
I actually enjoyed this movie more than I expected. I think it's a case where the filmmakers had a very limited budget to work with, and rather than use a lot of cheap CGI shots and cram the movie with horrible-looking action (like many made-for-SciFi Channel movies), they instead opted for the old tried and true Hollywood low-budget monster movie formula: try to create a lot of suspense and atmosphere and don't show the monster until the end. I am a fan of the Man-Thing comics, and I will say that the movie did capture a pretty good comic-book vibe, with the characters, eerie greenish swamp scene lighting, and the sets, art design and editing---unfortunately, it doesn't really feel like the Man-Thing comic. I wish they would have kept the "burning touch" power of Man-Thing, and featured a little more action and monster scenes. But, the creature did look pretty good when he finally appeared, and in general the acting, the score, and especially the cinematography were fairly solid. I also appreciated the fact that they went for a very serious vibe, instead of the camp approach of the 80's Swamp Thing movies.
If you're looking for an action-packed, big budget version of the Man-Thing comic, you'll be disappointed in this one. If you're looking for a good looking, slow-paced comic book movie about a swamp monster (that does touch on some of the environmental themes of the comics) then you might enjoy this one like I did.
Something is missing....................2007-03-15
Was it the bad acting, or a bad script...i think i was both. The cgi and
the sets were good, the gore was pretty good and detailed, but to see the
man thing, and other effects, you had to sit through this movie that
tried to put you to sleep. Good for a viewing.
Not total crap..........2006-12-15
Very, very loosely based on the Marvel comic of the same name, MAN-THING is about a shambling tree monster killing peope in a swamp because it's swamp home is being corrupted by corporate scumbags. The creatures just wanders around the swamp killing random people with tentecles that come out of it's back. There's one good kill at the end where the creature pumps oil into the human villian, causing him to puke black stuff. The other deaths are equally brutal, but that's the only one we really see.
The acting? Bad. The writing? Bad. Most of the direction? Bad. The film starts with some genuinely creepy shots of the swamp the Man-Thing resides in, and there are some neat shots later on, but other then that, the direction is bland and disorienting. The effects are good, and the monster looks very cool and real, but we never see it until the final ten minutes.
If you want to see Treebeard from LOTR go on a mad killing spree, making branches grow out of people's mouths, then watch MAN-THING. If not, avoid.
Not The Comic I Remember.......2006-10-12
A new sheriff arrives in the small town of Bywater and is immediately put to the test as a large band of protestors are holding up construction at a oil drilling site. The land in question is important to the local Native Americans. There is also a huge number of missing persons recently reported. Are the two connected?
Although this film bears the Marvel Comics logo, it bears little resemblance to the comics I used to read. Despite that it makes for a pretty good film. This Man-Thing is huge (15 feet tall) and really quite scary-looking once we get a look at it. Man-Thing is a force of nature that has arisen to fight the desecration of the swamp and its natural resources by the oil company specifically and people in general. Native American legends, greed, dirty dealings and protestors all have to be dealt with to stop the trouble and killings in the swamp. Check it out.
I have to say that I rather liked this film. Right at the start I decided to disassociate it from the comic. As a film it works pretty well but as a comic adaptation it is pretty much a failure. This was obvious with the opening scene of nudity and sex (although the original comic could be pretty racy at times). Here the title creature is purely a force of nature with no human origin and its touch does not burn, fear or no fear. It is sad to see Marvel gave approval for such a way-out adaptation. There other adaptations have included many changes but were at hear true to the comics while this one just isn't there. If you want a good monster film then this one is really quite good. If you want a screen version of the comic then you should avoid this one.
Terrible Movie.......2006-09-10
Anyone giving this movie more than 2 stars are either people who need to justify their $10 spent, or someone who was attached to the movie that is now bankrupt.
The truth is, this is a horrible movie. The acting is stiff and one-dimensional. The Special effects are laughable. Swamp Thing is Citizen Kane compaired to this film.
Let me use the 90 minutes of my life that I will never get back and warn you all to stay away from this movie. This movie is just horrible.
First off, Man-Thing. Man-Thing has less than 3 minutes of actual Screen time. 2 1/2 minutes only come at the very end. By way of comparison, the oil pump (which in my opinion must have been the most expensive prop due to its screen time) has over 9 minutes of screen time. Yup, they keep showing this one pump (only comes as high as the actors shoulders btw) over and over again. In fact, it is also the setting for the movies climatic scene where Man-Thing shows up. Talk about special effects....did you ever see the movie "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure?" If you did, remember that scene in the truck with Large Marge where her face gets all animated with claymation and scared Pee-Wee out of the truck? Well, that's about the level of effects for the Man-Thing. He stands there motionless, except for his tendrels, which has a cartoony look to them as they wiggle about.
Want to know about dialogue??? Best line in the movie:
Sheriff: "Why do they call this town Bywater?"
Man In Boat: "Cause it's by the water."
It's right up there with "here's looking at you, kid." Isn't it?

Description
WWE champion John Cena dominates the big screen as Marine John Triton. Wherever there's danger, Triton is usually smack dab in the middle of it... and he doesn't play by rules! After he's unwillingly discharged from Iraq, Triton's beautiful wife Kate ("Nip And Tuck's" Kelly Carlson) is kidnapped by merciless jewel thieves led by a vicious killer (Robert Patrick)! Now, Triton must fight to save her, utilizing his most powerful weapon ? himself!
Customer Reviews:

A Gory Slasher Flick.......2007-03-26
Ray Sawyer (Rick Cramer), Agnes Bruckner (Eden), Laura Ramsey (Rachel), Jonathan Jackson (Eric), and D.J. Cotrana (Sean) star in this scary and bloody slasher movie.
Eric and Eden are going through any typical teen romance; going steady one minute, broken up the next. Eden works at a local truck stop as a waitress. One evening, Ray pulls into the truck stop to get some food. Known as the local nut case, Ray has few friends and owns a filling station on the edge of town. Later that same evening, Ray comes upon Eric and Eden on a lonely bridge. Swerving to miss Eric's jeep, Ray instead crashes into an on-coming car. The impact of the crash sends the car slamming through the guardrail of the bridge. The car is now teetering precariously on the side of the bridge. Ray jumps from his truck and goes to the aid of the woman inside the car. After pulling her to safety, Ray goes back inside to retrieve a suitcase that the woman told him about. However, both Ray and the car tumble over the side of the bridge and into the water below. To make matters worse, the suitcase is full of poisonous snakes, who immediately begin striking at Ray. All that can be heard are Ray's screams as the car sinks.
Ray's body is pulled from the water and taken to the local morgue. But it doesn't remain there for long. It seems that the woman in the car was a Voodoo priestess, and the snakes were used to "cleanse" people by drawing the evil out of them. Now, the evil venom is flowing through Ray. Now begins a bloodbath of carnage as Ray, possessed by the power of the evil venom flowing through him, begins to stalk unsuspecting victims. One by one, he exacts his revenge on Eden's friends until only Eden remains. Who will win this final showdown; Ray or Eden?
I've always been a big fan of slasher-type films, and characters like Freddy from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, as well as Jason from "Friday the 13th". Ray Sawyer fits the mold of the typical slasher perfectly. The motives are the same; kill as many teenagers as possible, and Ray succeeds in this very well. I thought the story involving voodoo was well-conceived. The special effects were good, too.
I recommend this movie to horror and slasher fans. Although the movie is short (only about 80 minutes), there's lots of slashing in a short amount of time. If you enjoy a good slasher flick, then don't miss "Venom".
All Over The Map!!!.......2007-03-15
This movie has no real focus and just slithers around from one scare to another much akin to the poorly rendered CGI snakes that pop up in the film. The setting is great, the acting is fair. At one point, the dialogue was so bad that I had to turn it off: "So, that's what the underside of a car looks like," as uttered by one of the characters who comes across a vehicle overturned by the villain. I wanted this movie to be more like Candyman, and a little less riddled with bubble-gum teen angst. The cast would probably be better utilized in another film altogether. I actually wanted to check this flick out as I am a fan of Bijou Phillips, but even her role was wasted and unnecessary. The one-dimensional character who becomes the super-strong villain Mr. Jangles--there was nothing terrifying about him. I attribute this to unusual, choppy editing that marked his appearances in the film and detracted from his potential as a formidable foe. Anyway, see this only if you enjoy voodoo themes and Louisiana settings. Otherwise, as far as teen slasher fare goes, it is skippable.
In Bijou Phillip's immortal words: "Voodoo is bad".......2006-12-31
How's this for no good deed going unpunished. When Ray (the purported town "freak"; a freak because, according to the cast, he has a really icky scar on his face) tries to rescue a woman whose car is rocking perilously over the side of a bridge, how was he to know that she's actually a voodoo priestess and the bag she's so adamant about is loaded with snakes carrying the sins of countless evil souls that will sink their needle-like fangs into him, injecting all that venomous evil into his veins, turning him into one pissed off tow truck driver. Thus is the storyline of Venom, a half-hearted attempt toward reviving the slasher genre and to create a new Freddy, Jason, Michael baddie. The movie is produced by Kevin Williamson and directed by Jim Gillespie. The last time they collaborated was on I Know What You Did Last Summer. Since then, it's been mostly downhill for both. What we have with Venom is a pleasing-enough slasher affair, with plenty of blood, just the right atmosphere and a good first hour to sustain its viewers attention. Beyond that first hour the movie runs out of steam and stumbles on for another twenty minutes until the requisite setup for a sequel. Don't hold your breath for that one. The movie is nicely photographed and Gillespie has an eye for style. You can almost smell the buyou's stagnant water. It's a desent slasher, and since slashers of any kind are in short supply now-a-days, it's worth a look. Oh, and kudos for that idiotic subplot indicting poor Ray as a deadbeat dad just for that ten second payoff involving a human voodoo doll. For shame.
Modern Slasher That Satisfies.......2006-12-29
"Venom " is one of those movies I thought I would hate because I heard so much negativity about it but I really enjoyed it ,being a fan of the 70's and 80's slashers I crave newer versions because I have seen all the other ones over and over again.
Venom did NOT disappoint me.
It starts off with action and never lets up.I found it to be one of my favorite new horror/slasher flicks,The voodoo angle was good but not overplayed ,I'm simple in that I want to see a killer with an axe , machete butcher knife etc not a bunch of supernatural mumbo jumbo..I don't want to have to wonder" was that a dream or was it real~!!" As so many movies these days play off of.
Give me an old fashioned slice and dice and I'm in heaven.and Venom gave me that , So I hope to see Venom 2 ,if so ,I'm there
(For the record, Mr Jangles used the hook & Chain before Kane in see No Evil...)
..
Another teen slasher.......2006-10-24
So what kind of movie is this from the director of "I know what you did last summer?" It's basically another installment of the same genre with a similar set-up and similar function. Deep down, Venom is just another teen slasher movie. They rode into this film with the same clichéd scares, a young group of teens, a psycho killer, and a traditional ending.
So is it worth seeing?
That I can't completely answer for you. If you like more of the same old, then it's probably going to be a blast. The filmmakers were smart enough to throw in a few thrilling moments among the mundane, overused plot. I found some parts to be slightly unpredictable, and they did a good job detailing some suspenseful moments near the third act of the film. The voodoo element allowed for some additional surprises and kept the killer from being simply "an unstoppable evil force."
But individually, do the separate factors of this film combine to make a masterpiece? Quite frankly, in my opinion at least....no. Let's take a look at some of them;
Acting- Well done, well directed too I might add. The acting is realistic to a degree, and brings us into the film. The actors responded (for the most part) realistically to the story line and I think that this was set-up nicely. The major issue here was the persistence in finding a gun when the killer is already dead, not to mention a demon child of voodoo hoodoo.
Lighting- Dim, dark and mysterious; the lighting definitely amplified the mood of this film. Combined with the swamp-like location, I think that it sets a perfect example of what a good location combined with good lighting can do- make a relatively unattractive plot look beautiful.
Special Effects- They set this up pretty well. A few scenes made me cringe and I felt that the artists working on the film definitely put their hearts into it...or bled them out for it. The gore wasn't excessive, but just right for a slasher film, and props to the director for making that call. My only qualm with this is that they used the standard Halloween "stage blood" which is just basically a thick bright red liquid that looks nothing like blood despite its color. A few of the actors squirm around in it, only to look like they're rolling around in pizza sauce. There are a few other tacky special effects, including the last major one in the film.
The Killer- Mr. Jangles....? Enough said...sounds like a dog. I'll give the killer credit for being a good actor, but the portrayal needed a lot of work. The make-up kicked it up a notch, but the slow-motion style jumps and action-movie style stunts didn't do it justice. The man looked like an athlete and moved like one...not like a reincarnated being housing the souls of 13 evil spirits. Although I don't specifically know what that looks like....I'm sure they don't run like football players.
So what overall? It's ok. Not something I'd be dying to see, and I'm glad that I didn't run to the theatre to catch the first showing. It has some good moments and some bad, but doesn't really stand out from any normal Hollywood production.
My recommendation?
It's ok. I'd rather go rent Containment instead; the first movie in a long time to completely blow my mind. It's good to know that there is still some talent out there somewhere and that it still filters into the film world now and again...
