Mean-spirited; very little redeeming value.......2007-07-04
My video store actually had this in the "All-Time Best" section. What a joke. This movie is a mean-spirited piece of junk. What happens to the main character's wife -- whose only crime was to give her husband oral pleasure, then try to help him -- is one of the most abhorrable depictions of cruelty to women coming out of Hollywood that I've seen in a while. The guy who plays Billy Halleck is a terrible actor. I heard that at one time, there was talk of John Candy playing this role and actually slimming down for the part. It would have probably won him an Oscar, saved his life and saved this movie. Instead, we have a guy who's so obviously wearing a fat suit that it's pathetic, and his acting in the suit amounts to some bad impression of Oliver Hardy.
Curses?Wow!.......2007-02-28
For once,a movie that can prove you dont have to go on a diet to be thin.Robert John Burke plays Billy Halleck,an overweight lawyer who makes the mistake of hitting an old gypsy woman during a little pleasurable activity.LOL. However, when he is found not guilty,a curse is put upon him.Soon,he finds that he is rapidly losing weight and discovers he has a gypsy curse on him. With the help of his friend,Richie,he sets out to find the gypsy who put the curse on him, before he is permenently thin. I recommend this film to any Stephen King fan
"come on, I insist...white doctor from town".......2006-07-15
I must say, I really enjoyed this movie. We all know that most, if not all book based movies are not as good as the book. Stephen King movies are a good example of that. But, unlike movies such as The Tommyknockers or The Golden Years, Thinner is one of the better book based movies by King. First off, I really enjoyed the cast, especially Joe Mantegna. The evil old Gypsy (depending on what point of view or "side" your on) is especially creepy because he seems so ruthless. Tom Holland, who plays the main character as the cursed man who seems to be growing "Thinner", did a great job fulfilling his role.
Also, I must say that the production team of this movie really made Tom Holland's character look extremely convincing, mentally and physically.
In conclusion, This movie is extremely creepy and seems as if it's possible in real life, because it's simply a curse/hex that is at play throughout the movie. It has nothing to do with Aliens, mythical creatures, Ghost's etc. I highly recommend this movie to everyone, even if you aren't a horror fan, you should give this movie a chance.
the title says it all.......2006-06-21
never before has a movie had such an apt title as this mess. the plot is as thin as the main person in the movie gets. just really a waste of time and money for me,i thought! skip this mess!!!

Let me just start of by saying that I am a huge fan of both stephen kings, and horror movies. This however really isn't scary. However it did have a few scary parts. just be warned: this is not your average stephen king movie...but its still really good.
By the way...why do people give movies bad ratings if they have crappy special features? I don't know about everyone else, but I buy my movies for the movie, not for the extra stuff!

A so so collection........2006-08-10
Here are my thoughts on this DVD collection. Cujo and The Stand are great movies. Thinner and Golden years suck big time. The Langoliers would be great if only it were rereleased with some better special effects (primarily the CGI needs much work). All in all, not a bad collection, but only two out of five movies in the pack are worth keeping. However this is just my point of view, if you like the films in this collection, I would recomend it to you. After all, everyone is different, right. Well, thats my review.
Best Ever.......2006-07-25
Well since I love horror and especially Stephen King, this collection is great!!!
I love all the movies in it and can't wait to collect more!!
I have 13 Stephen King movies so far....
fantastic.......2006-07-09
IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL NIGHT FOR OUR FAMILY. WE HAD READ THE BOOKS AND THE WAY THEY WERE REPRESENTED IN MOVIE FORM WAS EXCEPTIONAL. I WOULD ADVISE A VIEWING OF THESE MOVIES TO EVERYONE.
3 Great Movies, One okay movie, and one piece of garbage.......2005-10-04
First of all, if you don't like long movies steer clear of this set. With the exception of Thinner and Cujo these movies are 4 hours long and up. As far as the contents, this box set has some great movies, Cujo is a classic horror film that caused me to have a phobia of dogs when I was little. The Stand is one of the best (and longest) movies I have ever seen, a classic good vs evil or even the disciples vs Satan. And then there is the Langoliers, a movie that understandably gets different review but I though was brilliant and very well casted. Along these three excellent movies there is Thinner which isn't a bad movie but it's nothing exceptional either, and The Golden Years which is a long long boaring piece of garbage. I have yet to make it through the Golden Years in one sitting without falling asleep so I have no idea how it ends but from other reviews it's just as bad as the rest of the movie. For the money this is a solid buy, especially if you are a Stephen King fan as I am. I do want to know when will the put some of his other great movies in one package. Movies like Needful Things, The Tommyknockers, Storm of the Century, and It? Just a thought!
Stephen King Horror DVD Collection (Cujo/Golden Years/The Langoliers/The Stand/Thinner).......2005-08-20
IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THESE MADE FOR TV ADAPTATIONS OF STEPHEN KING'S GREAT BOOKS. GOLDEN YEARS ENDING WAS A BIT WEAK, BUT THE NUMBER OF DVD'S FOR THE PRICE MAKES THIS A GREAT DEAL

Not what DVD is meant to be........2001-07-31
Thinner is the only one with commentary from cast/director. Cujo is in Mono! Not even close to the potential that DVD has. All three of these movies could have been put on one disc. ?????????????????????????
Four outta Five ain't bad..........2000-03-25
I gave this collection 4 stars because it contains the 5 star movie "The Langoliers". I took a star away because I was left wishing that "The Langoliers" and "Cujo" had a little more to them. A "cast list" and an "extra scenes" option would have been nice. I guess I expect more from a DVD. I like all three of these movies and look forward to watching them again.
I love these 3 classic horror films!.......1999-11-18
i especially like cujo but i think it should be the shining, pet sematary, and carrie

This was worth every penny I have paid. It has three of the best movies based on the books of Stephen King. It is certainly a must for all King fans!

Description
THINNER: Based on the best-seller, Stephen King's Thinner stars Robert John Burke (RoboCop 3, Tombstone) and Joe Mantegna (Bugsy, The Godfather III) in a story of supernatural terror and a countdown to the ultimate payback. A 109-year-old gypsy, hell-bent on revenge, exacts a curse so shocking it compels its victim to gorge himself in an effort to avoid shrinking away to nothingness. With time running out and a torture so bizarre and powerful, even death seems a more likely option. CUJO: Monstrous canine evil stalks a helpless, isolated family in this shock-packed horror-thriller from suspense master Stephen King's best-selling novel! Starring Dee Wallace (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Howling, 10), Daniel Hugh-Kelly (Nowhere to Hide) and Ed Lauter (King Kong, Girls Just Want to Have Fun), CUJO unleashes the ultimate in nightmarish, unrelenting terror.
In rural Maine, Vic and Donna Trenton (Hugh-Kelly and Wallace) struggle to repair their crumbling marriage, while their young son Tad (Danny Pintauro) befriends a hulking, loveable, 200-pound St. Bernard named Cujo. With Vic away on business, Donna and Tad take their decrepit car to be fixed at the remote farm of their mechanic (Lauter). As their aging Pinto sputters to a stop and dies, Cujo appears. But the once docile dog has undergone a hideous transformation - and becomes a slavering, demonic, implacable killer possessed by almost supernatural strength...and unholy cunning. Critically acclaimed, CUJO is a fearsome, spine-chilling tour de force from the most popular name in horror!
Customer Reviews:
Two good but not great film adaptations of King novels.......2005-09-06
If Thinner had been one of King's better novels, he would not have released it as Bachman; thus, the movie has little chance of becoming a classic or universal crowd-pleaser. The main problem with this whole story is in fact one of thinness; unlike the main character, who enters the arena rather hugely and soon wastes away to nothing, the storyline starts out thin and basically remains that way. Thinner just doesn't have the feel a Stephen King movie (or novel) should have; very little of consequence happens outside the tight strictures of the basic plotline; none of the characters seems to bring any life to what they are doing, and no one besides the young daughter is even remotely likable. Depth of character and the inherently interesting relationships between seemingly real individuals make up one of the greatest strength's driving King's creations; oftentimes, movie adaptations fail to capture this important magic and, predictably, prove somewhat disappointing. In the case of Thinner, such depth was never there to begin with.
Thinner is about as straightforward a plot as you will ever get from Stephen King. Billy Halleck, an obese, morally ambivalent lawyer accidentally (with some help from his unsavory wife) runs over an old gypsy woman. His friendship with the chief of police and presiding judge allows him to walk away scot-free, a fact which obviously annoys the victim's 106-year old father. This gypsy king places a curse upon the men who killed and then covered up the death of his daughter. Billy's curse comes down to one word, "Thinner." He quickly finds himself losing weight, which seems to be a blessing - at first. It doesn't take him long to figure out, though, that he is dropping two to four pounds a day regardless of how much food he throws down his throat. When he sees the effect of the gypsy curse on his two friends, reality hits him like a great big frying pan. As his fear and paranoia increase exponentially, he grows distrustful of his own wife, who truly is just a little too friendly to his basically unhelpful doctor. In desperation, having failed to convince the gypsy to release his curse, Billy turns to one of his shady clients, using him to implement his own "white man's curse" on the gypsy king and his thoroughly despicable grand-daughter. The ending of the movie differs slightly from King's original ending, but it comes off rather well.
Cujo is probably my least favorite of all the Stephen King films. Let's start with the fact that the novel is not conducive to a film adaptation in the first place - the idea of Cujo is a good one, but the characters and atmosphere of the story are as unappealing as meatloaf left out in the hot sun for about three months. Vic Trenton (Daniel Hugh Kelly) is the only half-way sympathetic character to be found here, but he, unfortunately, looks like a reject from The Brady Bunch. Then you have his wife Donna (Dee Wallace); not only is she unattractive, she is having an affair with one of her husband's friends. And young Tad (Danny Pintauro) - I know he's a little kid, and we were all scared of the dark at that age, and all of us would have squawked incessantly if we were trapped in a car by a giant rabid hellhound, but he is just so incredibly annoying. Less important characters, such as Donna's illicit boy toy and the dysfunctional Camber family, suck what little air is left over out of the room. The town itself looks like it should have been abandoned ten years ago. And the lighting - a sunny day has never been as depressing as what you see here. I don't like the music, either, but I guess I've complained enough already.
And what of Cujo himself? Normally, as an animal lover, I would fall in love with any animal in a film. Not Cujo. Sure, he didn't go out and get rabies on purpose, but he had no business chasing that cute little bunny rabbit in to the bat-occupied hole in the ground in the first place. On top of that, he proved unable to finish the job when he had the film's two least likable characters trapped. I've got to give the canine actor his props, though, as he gave everything he had to this film. He had to endure all kinds of miseries to take on the look of a rabid gigantic killer, and he held nothing back when told to attack people, cars, doors, windows - whatever. He also, I am quite sure, did all of his own stunts. Sadly, in yet another slap in the mug to canine actors everywhere, he was left entirely out of the credits. He was the only actor in this production who deserved to have his name in lights, yet he didn't even rate the same dignity as the film's best boy and assistant cooks.
All in all, Thinner is a perfectly good movie that really doesn't even aspire to anything greater than what it is. Stephen King makes another memorable appearance as the town pharmacist, and that is pretty much the highlight of the whole film for me. Obviously, I pretty much hated watching Cujo, but I must admit that, by and large, it was a pretty good adaptation of King's novel - although I was exceedingly disheartened to find that the director lacked the courage to end the film the way Stephen King ended the novel. A lot of people complained about King's ending, but it was the right one and should have carried over to the film adaptation.
