Customer Reviews:
a forgotten star shines again!.......2007-06-26
Although Tyrone Power is probably a forgotten star to many, this collection of some of his most exciting adventure films reminds those who remember him, or those who are at least familiar with some of his work, what star power once meant during the "Golden Age of Hollywood". Each of the films are my personal favorites, and the DVDs in the collection contain some interesting extras such as interviews with Power's surviving family members and former co-stars, as well as audio commentaries film historians, film composers, and other film professionals. Each DVD also contains separate audio track of each film's original soundtrack. The "Blood and Sand" DVD transfer uses a recently restored print that brings to life the film's original "old fashioned" bold and vivid Technicolor. All in all, this collection is definitely worth owning whether you're a fan or just interested in a star whose name rarely heard anymore.
Tyrone Power the movie star shines here. For Tyrone Power the actor, see Nightmare Alley.......2007-06-13
Tyrone Power was too earnest and straight forward to be a great actor, but he had what it takes to be a great movie star. The earnestness of his acting made him likable, even in those rare occasions when he played a heel. He was startlingly handsome as a young man. Even as his looks matured after WWII, he maintained his status as a romantic leading man up to his death of a heart attack when he was 49. As a heel, a hero or as a period swashbuckler, Power had that undefinable quality that made people want to buy tickets to his movies. These five swashbucklers, as variable in quality and corniness as they are, give a fine picture of Tyrone Power, movie star. He had to fight to be taken seriously as an actor, so I hope everyone who buys this set will also take a look at Power in Nightmare Alley (1947). The characters he plays in this set -- Juan Gallardo, Benjamin Blake, Pedro de Vargas, Andrea Orsini, Walter of Gurnie -- you'll probably forget. You'll remember Power as Stanton Carlisle.
Blood and Sand (1941) -- Blood and Sand is not a swashbuckler, but an allegory of a man's pride, lust and ambition, played out in the bullring, about a man who is redeemed by the love of a good woman and a death ennobled by regret. In other words, the movie is a Hollywood weeper. Still, it shows what can be accomplished when professionals take hold of a teary melodrama and give it color, sleekness, sex and, at 27, an extraordinarily handsome leading man in Tyrone Power. Rita Hayworth, as the femme fatale, is almost as pretty.
Son of Fury (1942) -- If Son of Fury were the title of a paperback novel, we'd expect a bodice-ripping, heavy-breathing Regency romance. What we have is a highly professional Darryl F. Zanuck adventure of surprising innocence and charm. Everything about the movie, from the actors to the script to the cinematography, features such a high level of craftsmanship that the few corny moments pass quickly. The story, even with a stolen inheritance, a wicked uncle and a South Seas cutie, is told with such professional attention to naivety that we cheer for Ben, hiss his uncle, and even find the unlikely conclusion satisfying.
Captain from Castile (1947) - If Captain from Castile is remembered much today it probably is because of one of the most rousing marches a Hollywood composer ever wrote. The "Conquest" theme is heard only three times, and the first two are brief but effective scene setters. We have to wait until the movie is almost over and Hernan Cortez is setting out on his march to the Aztec capital of Tenochititlan for the full treatment. The music, by Alfred Newman, embraces the moment, with hundreds of soldiers, the priests, the natives, the hangers-on spreading out before us, the horizon lightening and a single volcano smoking in the distance. The theme is inspiring, martial, emotional, uplifting and memorable. It's enough to make most movie goers want to sign up and most historians queasy. After all, in less than a generation a civilization of between 2 million and 6 million people was obliterated.
Prince of Foxes (1949) -- If passionate love, convivial betrayals and loyalty one can change as quickly as one's shirt intrigues you, you'll most likely enjoy Prince of Foxes. If nothing else, you'll learn a great party trick that involves two eyeballs and two thumbs. Prince of Foxes, in my view, is one of the best of the Tyrone Power adventure films. It stands out in part because we find ourselves operating in the lusty, double-dealing world of Cesare Borgia. And while Orson Welles, who plays Borgia, can't resist slicing the ham with gusto, it must be admitted that he brings a lot of joie de vivre to villainy.
The Black Rose (1950) -- And what's a black rose? We're told it is the name given to the clove, the most precious of spices. In this case, the clove is Maryam, played by Cecile Aubry. She was a small French actress who looks no older than 14. She has a small mouth which is filled with tiny teeth and a plump tongue, and she occasionally jumps about to express enthusiasm. If Vera-Ellen and Charlie McCarthy had ever had a child, it would look a lot like Cecile Aubry. The movie, The Black Rose, is no stinker, but the one insuperable drawback is its disjointed nature. We move from Norman England 200 years after William the Conqueror, to the middle-east and then on to a Mongol army moving and battling its way toward China, then to the imperial court of China itself, and finally back to England. It seems to me to be one of Power's weakest romantic-adventure films.
Tyrone Powerr: The Swashbuckler box Set.......2007-06-08
These Swashbuckler films show Tyrone Power at his best.
Best Buy Around.......2007-06-08
As a classic movie fan, I cannot rate this collection highly enough. It's chock full of some of the finest actors of Hollywoods golden age. Cheap at twice the price.
tyrone power.......2007-05-29
The set was everything I expected it would be,,,the same tyrone Power from what I remember years ago.
The quality of the films are excellent.
Everybody should have this collection!!

Description
Step right up, folks, and feast your eyes if you dare on the freakiest, creepiest show on earth! It's a four-ring circus of sideshow scares straight from the Something Weird vaults, bound to keep you gasping, screaming, and squirming! First up is the ultimate midnight movie cult classick, Basket Case, the tender story of young Duane exploring sleazy Times Square with his mutant Siamese twin brother stuffed away in a basket! Packed with gore and giggles, this unspeakable ode to brotherly love will have you coming back for more. And you'll swear you're hallucinating when you see the Blood Freak, a killer Turkey-Man who drinks the blood of drug addicts with his beak! It's a monster movie unlike any other, the world's only bloodthirsty-gobbler/anti-drug/pro-Jesus epic. But if you want something a little more feminine, get a load of She Freak, a colorful and kooky carny-noir from producer David F. Friedman (Blood Feast) in which a gold-digging hash slinger finds out the hard way that a midget scorned is a very scary thing. Then take a trip up to Frankenstein#s Castle of Freaks, where the crackpot doctor (Rossano Brazzi) unleashes monsters Goliath and Ook for a monster rumble to top them all. Come on, come all, come scream!

Four very different movies, with great extras.......2004-07-08
For those unfamiliar with Something Weird Video, they specialize in releasing forgotten low-budget movies; their DVD's feature a plethora of bonuses that will keep collector geeks amused for hours on end. If your idea of horror is big-budget CGI-fests like Underworld and Freddy vs. Jason, you will be well advised to skip this box set. If you're a drooling low-budget horror fanatic like myself, read on! But as the package says: "Warning: Contains Graphic Violence, Nudity and Killer Turkeys."
The best known and, in my opinion, best movie in the set is Basket Case, written and directed by Frank Henenlotter. It's about Siamese twins who are separated shortly after birth: as an adult, the normal-looking Duane carries around his hideously deformed evil twin Belial in a large, padlocked basket. Equally gruesome and funny, this cult film truly deserves its reputation. Fans will oooh and aaah at the generous extras included, especially the outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage, and the video short "In Search of the Hotel Broslin," in which Henenlotter re-visits the Times Square locations where he originally shot Basket Case. Hilariously, the people who run the hotel now refuse to let the video crew into the lobby to film! Just goes to show ya, outside of the horror conventions a low-budget filmmaker gets no respect.
Next, we have the Italian release Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks. I would recommend a six-pack of your favorite cold beverage to accompany the viewing of this one, mainly due to the large amount of unintentional laughs. Picture the usual Frankenstein antics with a couple cavemen thrown in, and you've got the general idea. Don't expect lots of blood and gore, but you do get some good nude scenes, one a memorable mud-bath where the girls are spied upon by a voyeuristic dwarf. Something Weird continues along these lines with the inclusion of the short subjects "The Monster and the Maiden" and "Frankenstein and the Naughty Nurse," both of which feature a Frankenstein monster and a stripper.
Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, for writer/producer David F. Friedman's She Freak! This 1967 film made the most of its carnival/sideshow location shooting, or as the poster said, "filmed on actual locations where it COULD have happened!" Storywise it's a semi-remake of Tod Browning's classic movie Freaks, but not nearly as creepy. The main character is the hateful Jade Cochran, a small-town waitress who decides to join the carny lifestyle and claw her way up the ladder. There's lots of outrageous trashy dialogue, and as a fan of old-school carnival/sideshow stuff I enjoyed the colorful setting. The main complaint I have with this movie, or rather the packaging: the DVD cover and the main DVD menu both give away the big "shocker" shot which is the climax of the film. The original trailer, included here, gave it away too, though, so I guess it's that old exploitation way of bringing in the paying customer by whatever means necessary. It's still a fun movie, and there's great old newsreel footage included of sideshow attractions like Siamese twins and a pinhead!
Finally, we come to (shudder) Blood Freak. Do you pride yourself on being a huge fan of such low-budget campfests as Plan 9 from Outer Space and Blood Feast? Me too, but that doesn't mean you are adequately prepared for 1972's Blood Freak, "the world's only turkey-monster-anti-drug-pro-Jesus gore film!" Plot: guy gets hooked on marijuana, eats some turkey meat laced with an experimental drug, and becomes a monster with a giant turkey head that drinks the blood of drug addicts. Ah yes, it's as bad as it sounds. Bizarre, funny at times, includes a couple (inept) gore scenes, but painful....oh so painful. Fortunately, there's a cornucopia of special features, lots of trailers, a gallery of old comic cover art (very cool), and five, count em, five short films! These include "Beggar at the Gates," which is a bizarre Mondo-type overview of American religious sects of the 60's, the anti-drug classic "Narcotics, Pit of Despair," and the self-explanatory "Brad Grinter, Nudist." By far the weirdest of the short films is the soft-core porn "The Walls Have Eyes," starring Steve Hawkes, star/co-writer/co-producer/co-director of Blood Freak. This sleazy little film features a girl shooting up and voyeurism, and definitely gives you a taste of what was playing on 42nd Street in 1969. These copious DVD extras help to compensate for the agony of the featured film itself.
Low-budget film "freaks" unite!

5 FREAKY FEATURES Something Weird Box Set - Box Of BLOOD!.......2004-05-25
A collection of 3 Something Weird DVD's with 5 freaky features!
Bloody Pit Of Horror-Mickey Hargitay stars as an owner of a freaky castle that some lovely, young models visit to accomplish a sleazy photo shoot. Oh, did I mention that Mickey's character, Travis Anderson, is also a pyscho/sado-masochist who believes he is the re-incarnation of a 17th century torturemaster
named "The Crimson Executioner". This film is touted to be based
loosely on the writings of the great Marquis De Sade... There is an iron maiden, dungeons, a human roaster, and lots of other torture devices.
Carnival Of Blood-A Coney Island Carnival has a murderer on the loose who just LOVES to kill hilariously ANNOYING women. Who COULD it BE??? A strange little sicky! One of the best perfomances is given by a very young, Burt Young as a hunchbacked carnie. (You know, Paulie from the Rocky movies!)
Curse Of The Headless Horseman-Mark Callahan inherits is dead uncle's Wild West tourist attraction. Though he and his hippy friends have been warned. They ingore the "curse" only to meet with the sharp end of the famous and ghostly marauder's knife! A cameo appearance by Andy Warhol's 5 seconds of fame persona, Ultra-Violet who carries around Superman lunchbox!!!
Blood Suckers- stars Peter Cushing and a young man named Patrick Mower who has recently been resued from a Satanic and Vampiric cult. But... you know, once you've tasted blood, you never go back!
Blood Thirst - a Filipino movie in regards to murders in Manilla, a monster with elephantitis
All of these movies are total STINKERS and that's what I like about them! There are MANY, MANY extras on these discs- some film shorts, still galleries, trailers, and radio spot ads! The extras are great!
Happy Watching!
Hilarious, mostly. . ........2003-11-10
Something Weird Does it again! If you love those campy "didn't even know they existed" B horror films, this is worth the time and investment. I especially loved "Carnival of Blood" as the acting was so bad it was brilliant. You'll be glad that the victims die! (Check out the ugly big nosed woman who visits the fortune teller towards the end). Don't expect great quality here, just wonderful tasteless obscurity. Not for the mainstream horror fan. For the cult fan who appreciates something WEIRD!
OH, and great extras too!

Horror from the past influences the present.......2002-04-22
For all you Mario Bava fans out there - here is a beautiful box set of 'must have' movies! The list of cinematographers, directors, writers, and actors influenced by the mastery of Bava would be impossible to put in this small space. Suffice it to say that 'greats' such as Fulci, Argento, Scorcesi, Miner, Carpenter, Craven and others owe a huge debt of gratitude to the first influential European horror director to combine ALL the attributes necessary to produce spectactular, beautiful, meaningful horror that we all crave. The Whip and the Body was the first horror/ghost story to combine a disfunctional family, cousinly love, and sadism (cool taboo subjects back then) into a superbly acted, filmed flick. The use of lighting, shading, colors, and sound rank at the top in cinema history that movies today can only TRY to duplicate. Experts have agreed that this movie was a 'how to' on color manipulation. Blood and Black Lace was the forerunner of all the so-called 'bodycount' movies. Yes, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Scream (again, the list goes on and on)-- they all got their ideas from THIS movie. Kill Baby Kill (one of my all-time favorites) inspired the supernatural revenge ideas that prevailed in later years (The Shining, The Changeling, The Church, Magic...and on and on). This DVD set ROCKS, folks! Buy it while it's still available - you won't regret it. I gave it 5 stars because i couldn't go any higher.
Colourful Film, Chopped & Cropped..........2001-06-13
Mario Bava is obviously the granddaddy of the 80s Body Count Boom and Italian Giallo, having done "Blood and Black Lace" and "Twitch of the Death Nerve", and invented both the faceless mad killer and setpiece death sequences in the process. This film is probably my favourite of his as he gives the threadbare plot an awesome stylistic veneer. Candy coloured sets, moody music, great camera angles, awesome tracking shots and some suspenseful sequences.
I got the DVD of this film to preserve those colours and to get the awesome array of extras that VCI packaged with them (Alternate credit sequences, photo galleries, a great soundtrack option, informative commentry and many trailers). However, I had read that this film was uncut and in its proper screen ratio and that is a complete lie!
Here in Melbourne we have a free-to-air station that broadcasts oddities like uncut widescreen Dario Argento films, Hong Kong Movies, Sweet Sweetback's Baaaadass Song, Manga etc. [They don't call Australia 'The Lucky Country' for nothing : ) ] Anyways, they showed this film a few years ago and not only was it matted significantly wider (1.85 : 1, as opposed to the DVD's 1.66 : 1), but it also had an extra bit during the "hot stove" sequence, where the killer not only pulled the woman's face off the stove and showed it to the camera, but then stuck it back on again.
I'm not saying that this DVD is now worthless, because the extras packaged with it are fantastic and well worth the money, BUT if you think that this version is UNCUT and FULLY WIDESCREEN, you are WRONG.
Blood and Black Lace disc won't play on some players.......2001-01-15
WARNING! The Blood and Black Lace disc has a known problem with not being able to play in a Philips/Magnavox 825 and various Pioneer players including: DV-414, DV-515, and DVL-909.
