Product Description
Francois Dupuis is a composer on the brink of insanity. It is concert night and he is to conduct his "orchestra" with his version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Through each of the music sections we witness his twisted imaginations. First comes Autumn. In this tale we find a ghost story that takes us on a rollercoaster of twists and turns. Winter sees a Stephen King-like tale of a Demon who wreaks havoc on a small town. Spring is the tale of a monster that comes back from the dead for vengeance. And the crescendo piece is Summer, which sees the first night of a vampiress. Now the real question is, will Francois's insanity get the better of him, or can his art save him. Special Features include a feature length commentary, cast and crew bios, the trailer, the director's production journal, and the short film that started it all.

5 out of 5 stars Second season manages to match expectations after the mind blowing mini series and first season... no surprise really!.......2007-07-03

When you get this blown away by what was just the mini-series (which I consider a full-sized feature film and which could well have stood on its own, without the show following up !!!), you can't believe they'll be able to hold up the intensity of that first season: sci-fi and human drama interwoven in a masterpiece of a show unheard off (and there are many, many good shows out there... lucky us).
But they manage to get our full attention up. They do it by shifting to a little different angles, focusing more on the characters than the big turns in the story, making episodes into little stories inside the big story ("Scar" is a really marvellous example...)
And having Kara/Starbuck(played by overwhelming Katee Sackhoff) moved even more into the center of attention is just fine with me. Not that there is any actor on the show who is anything less than perfect...

You enjoyed the first season? Zero risk you'll be disappointed by the second, guaranteed. I watched more than half of it in three days, my evenings seeming way too short!

What a wonderful thing to have entertainment of that caliber at our fingertips.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST TV Show I'v ever seen.......2007-06-15

STAR TREK? STAR WARS? It's all for Kids....Very dramatic.... Very powerful... Deep story.... You never forget....
If you steel don't seen BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, you're don't seen anything at all.

5 out of 5 stars the best show on TV.......2007-06-13

battlestar is the best! so good that I do not watch it on TV, but wait for the DVD's, so I can watch the whole season at a time.

4 out of 5 stars Unusually hard biting SF drama.......2007-06-10

Great series with interesting ethical dilemmas. Asks some tough but valid questions. Despite the occasioanal cliche and at times uneven acting from some of the minor characters, BG provides great entertainment. It offers well developped central characters interpreted by generally strong actors and interesting insights into problems we face today. Battlestar Galactica is a modern allegory relevant to a broad range of TV viewers. Not just for scifi aficionados.

5 out of 5 stars Takes TV Sci-fi to realms never before seen - a must-own set.......2007-05-22

Warning! Spoilers ahead!

Buying all of this incredible series on DVD is a more confusing undertaking than it ought to be. Grouping both halves of Season Two into this single package definitely simplifies things somewhat. The set also comes with a friendlier price than when each half was sold separately.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA after three seasons has established a critical reputation unprecedented in the history of TV Sci-fi. A host of mainstream reviewers and publications have named it not merely the best Sci-fi series on TV, but the best series of any genre. And we are not talking low-profile critics and publications. At one time or another TV Guide, Ken Tucker, Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Matt Roush, the Chicago Tribune, Maureen Ryan, the San Francisco Chronicle, Entertainment Weekly, and a host of others have praised the show as the best on TV. It was only one of two shows to make the American Film Institute's list of the Ten Best Shows on TV two years in a row. To top it all off, in 2006 it won a prestigious Peabody Award. And all this for a Sci-fi series!

But there has never before been Sci-fi like this. Normally Sci-fi TV is associated with escapist entertainment, clever perhaps at its best, but never truly challenging. A few series have previously challenged this, in particular FIREFLY and FARSCAPE, but all other series to some degree kept looking over their shoulders at imagined teen viewers, determined never to get either very dark or very outrageous. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA was the first Sci-fi series targeted more at intelligent grown ups than young male teens (even if those "teens" were in their thirties or forties). BSG went dark and stayed dark, became grittier and grittier, and had a cast of characters who were sometimes heroic but where more often simply messed up.

Narratively BSG will, in the end, contain more or less a single narrative. It is best to think of the show, like LOST, as a long novel that contains individual chapters. Arcs overlap from season to season and year to year. For instance, in the Miniseries we are introduced to a Cylon sleeper agent known as Lt. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii and in the first episode of Season One a Cylon who is identical to her who is another Sharon (usually referred to merely as "Sharon" though later as "Athena"). Over the course of the three seasons we gradually see these two Cylons basically trade places. Season One focuses more on Boomer, but in Season Two and Three the focus is almost exclusively on the other Sharon. But their stories are not contained neatly in this or that season. Similarly, we learn in Season One that the Cylons believe that Starbuck is "special," that she "has a destiny." In Season Two that is expanded upon a bit, but it comes to full fruition in Season Three. It is, therefore, a tad meaningless to say something like, "Season One is the best season of BSG" or "No, Season Two (or Three) is!" All the seasons hang together. In the end it will be one long story.

While insisting that BSG must be judged as a whole, Season Two is nonetheless remarkable in its own right. Not that every episode is golden. In a recent interview BSG creator Ron Moore revealed that over the first three seasons the network had often insisted on stand alone episodes that they hoped would attract new viewers who are otherwise intimidated by the complexity of the overall story. As a result, the writers were forced each season to insert some episodes that didn't really carry the story forward and were something of a drag on the series as a whole. The first half of Season Two was not plagued by this problem. In fact, few of the first ten episodes can truly be considered stand-alone. "Final Cut" and "The Flight of the Phoenix" are stand alones, but both of these are utterly remarkably episodes. But in the second half of the season the series hits something of a dead spot. "Black Market" is widely regarded (even by Ron Moore) as perhaps the weakest episode in the entire series, but it is followed by other episodes that are considered below par, including "Scar" and "Sacrifice." Luckily, the stand alone "Downloaded" is one of the season highlights and the two-part finale "Lay Down Your Burdens" even better.

The first seven episodes of Season Two really continue major events of Season One. These include the fallout from the attempted assassination of Adama in the Season One finale, what happens after Starbuck arrives on Caprica, her and Helo's meeting members of the resistance movement on Caprica, the determination of Roslin and Lee to lead whoever will follow them to Kobol, what happens to Boomer after everyone realizes she is a Cylon, and the reaction to the arrival of Helo's Sharon and what she does to keep herself alive. "Final Cut" and "The Flight of the Phoenix" are stand-alone episodes, but "Pegasus" introduces the battlestar of that name and its commander Admiral Cain. I would, however, caution viewers not to watch the version of "Pegasus" that appears on the 2.0 disc, but instead to watch the Extended Version on in the 2.5 set. It adds a lot to the story.

The second half of Season Two, with the exception of the amazing Pegasus trilogy of episodes, doesn't carry the story forward as much as the previous season and a half had. No doubt the network's desire for stand-alone episodes played a role here. There were, however, a number of plot developments, many of them centered on what to do about Sharon's pregnancy (indeed, what to do with Sharon in general). The latter part of the season deals with Baltar's challenge of Roslin for the presidency in the upcoming election. But I would hasten to add that even at its weakest, BSG remains riveting entertainment. I will admit that I usually skip "Black Market" and "Scar" when I rewatch Season Two, but I don't skip anything else.

I want to close by stating that BSG is actually a series that might be better suited for fans of other quality TV shows more than those viewers who normally watch nothing but Sci-fi. There is certainly nothing wrong with watching only shows of a particular genre, but my own experience in talking with others, making recommendations to others, getting their feedback, and spending considerable time on various BSG boards that this show appeals more to people who focus less on genre and more on quality. If your favorite shows of the past decade include such shows as BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, THE SOPRANOS, SIX FEET UNDER, THE WEST WING, ANGEL, LOST, THE WIRE, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, THE GILMORE GIRLS, and VERONICA MARS, you are almost certain to love this show. Not all fans of the Star Trek or Stargate franchises, on the other hand, always do. This series breaks down and reconstructs what we expect of a Sci-fi series.

The facts have become legend. Star Trek, the NBC series that premiered on September 8, 1966, has become a touchstone of international popular culture. It struggled through three seasons that included cancellation and last-minute revival, and turned its creator, Gene Roddenberry, into the progenitor of an intergalactic phenomenon. Eventually expanding to encompass five separate TV series, an ongoing slate of feature films, and a fan base larger than the population of many third-world countries, the Star Trek universe began not with a Big Bang but with a cautious experiment in network TV programming. Even before its premiere episode ("The Man Trap") was aired, Star Trek had struggled to attain warp-drive velocity, barely making it into the fall '66 NBC lineup.

The series' original pilot, "The Cage," featured Jeffrey Hunter as U.S.S. Enterprise captain Christopher Pike--a variation of the role that would eventually catapult William Shatner to TV stardom. Filmed in 1964, the pilot was rejected by NBC the following year, but the network made a rare decision to order a second pilot. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was filmed in 1965, and only one character from the previous pilot remained--a pointy-eared alien named Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy), whom Roddenberry had retained despite network disapproval. The second pilot was accepted, and production on Star Trek began in earnest with the filming of its first regular episode, "The Corbomite Maneuver."

Never a ratings success despite a growing population of devoted fans, Star Trek was canceled after its second season, prompting a letter-writing campaign that resulted in the series' third-season renewal. It was a mixed blessing, since Roddenberry had departed as producer to protest the network's neglect, and Star Trek's third season contained most of the series' weakest episodes. And yet, the show continued to "to explore strange new worlds…to seek out new life and new civilizations…to boldly go where no man [a phrase later amended to "no one"] has gone before."

There were milestones along the way. The first interracial kiss on network primetime TV (between Shatner and series co-star Nichelle Nichols) furthered a richly positive and expansive view of a better, nobler future for humankind. The series offered a timelessly appealing balance of humor, imagination, and character depth. And at least one episode (Harlan Ellison's "The City on the Edge of Forever") ranks among the finest science fiction stories in any popular medium. Beloved by long-time fans in spite of its cheesy sets and costumes, and the now-dated trappings of late-1960s American culture, "classic Trek" has aged remarkably well, and its sense of adventure and idealism continues to live long and prosper. --Jeff Shannon

The three 2004 DVD sets collect all 79 episodes of the show, including "The Cage" in both a restored color version and the original, never-aired version that alternates between color and black and white. Each set is supplemented by over an hour of featurettes incorporating new and old interviews with Shatner, Nimoy, other cast members, and producers, and there's also some vintage footage of Gene Roddenberry. Accompanying the 20-minute seasonal recaps ("To Boldly Go...") are a number of interesting featurettes: "The Birth of a Timeless Legacy" examines the two pilot episodes and the development of the crew; "Sci-Fi Visionaries" discusses the series' great science fiction writers; Nimoy debunks various rumors in "Reflections of Spock"; "Kirk, Spock & Bones: The Great Trio" focuses on the interplay among Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley); and, in what is probably his last Star Trek appearance, James Doohan (Scotty), slowed by Alzheimer's but still with a twinkle in his eye, recalls his voiceover roles and his favorite episodes. As they've done for many of the feature-film special editions, Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda provide a pop-up text commentary on four of the episodes filled with history, trivia, and dry wit. It's the first commentary of any kind for a Star Trek TV show, but an audio commentary is still overdue. The technical specs are mostly the same as other Trek TV series--Dolby 5.1, English subtitles--but with the welcome addition of the episode trailers. The plastic cases are an attempt to replicate some of the fun packaging of the series' European DVD releases, but it's a bit clunky, and the paper sleeve around the disc case seems awkward and crude. Still, the sets are a vast improvement both in terms of shelf space and bonus features compared to the old two-episode discs, which were released before full-season boxed sets became the model for television DVDs. --David Horiuchi

    5 out of 5 stars Trekkie Heaven.......2007-07-05

Well worth the steep price, if you love the original Star Trek series. Hours and hours of great memories on DVD! Presented in the order they were shown on TV, but numbered according to the order in which they were PRODUCED -- if you want to see them in "stardate" order, just look for the next number (may involve changing discs). We're enjoying this series AGAIN, and we're raising a new generation of Kirk/Spock/Bones/Scotty fans.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2007-07-05

Despite lots of misgivings regarding the non-improvement of image quality by som reviewers this is a pretty essential purchase. All 3 seasons of the original Star Trek series. Ok it is not a complete bargain but it is not overexpensive. The packaging is based on the European boxed sets that were produced for the other Trek series. One main advatgae is that since they are made out of hard plastic, they do not damage as easily as other current DVD boxes. Having never seen all episodes, this was quite a revelation. In the beginning of series 1, as has been written, all the characters have not come into place into what would become the classic series. The acting is also quite wooden at times. However it is the screenwriting that is quite good. I had never seen The Menagerie for example and I am not sure that that double episode was the best way to salvage the footage from the "lost" pilot The Cage. However all the trademarks of future ST adventures are to be found and it is a pleasure to watch. I do not find the picture quality as bad as some say. I found it worse on the first Next Generation DVD for example. The sound is great also and there are some nice features also so one cannot really complain. It is beautiful and I finally get to see the whole series.

4 out of 5 stars Waiting for Remastered Version.......2007-07-03

Another reviewer pointed out the flaws in the video and sound. I too agree and will wait for the remastered version to purchase - then I'll be happy.

4 out of 5 stars Great transfers - lousy packaging.......2007-06-10

It's wonderful to get the originals and not the new edited, 'improved' versions. I like the originals; the bad back drops, BAD lighting and, yes, the same planet even - it's great to have the series that started it all.

Why they ever designed these really CHEAP and CLUMSY padkages I'll never know. They're impractical, awarkard and, well, cheap.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY I can see the entire episode!.......2007-05-23

I've been a fan for many years, so I know that, as lovely as the re-mastered episodes on cable television are, there are numerous key scenes that are chopped out. I bought these DVDs mainly to see the episodes in their entirety, and I wasn't disappointed. So glad I got them!

4 out of 5 stars Is it an Asian import?.......2007-07-01

    Caveat emptor / buyer beware!

This is just a note to people considering buying "Star Trek: Enterprise The Complete Seasons 1-4" on DVD from certain Amazon sellers.

If you see the Star Trek: Enterprise DVD collection in a single box rather than in four separate boxes (one box per season), it's likely an Asian import edition rather than from the studio.

Especially beware the appellation "the Chosen Collection" which was copied from the complete collector's edition of Joss Whedon's TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The Buffy "Chosen Collection" is official while the Star Trek: Enterprise "Chosen Collection" is not.

Furthermore, if the DVD set mentions it's region free, then it almost certainly is an Asian import, because the studio does not have a region free version of Star Trek: Enterprise on DVD (at the time of this review).

It's true the Asian import edition will be considerably cheaper, and as I mentioned region free, but there are drawbacks as well. For example, the audio and video quality suffers relative to the regular edition. Also, if there's a scratch or other slight defect on one of the DVDs, most of the sellers won't refund the buyer's money or replace the DVD(s). Some might, but it could be tricky (and perhaps despite their claims to the contrary). Not to mention that purchasing an Asian import means the money goes to the Asian distributor and its affiliates rather than to, say, the cast or crew or anyone else on the actual production team -- which in turn could presumably be funneled into bringing back Star Trek (although it's debatable).

And please make sure to read Oren D. Applequist's helpful comment below regarding World Express Mail Service (EMS).

Anyway, obviously people are free to do what they like, but I'm mentioning all this so buyers can at least be aware of the risks.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-06-11

I loved the series. I only wish they had made more after season 4. I thought the crew worked well together personality wise and the story lines were great. I especially liked the relationship between Trip and T'pol. It's about time they allowed a romance between crew members. Does anyone know if their planning to make series 5?

5 out of 5 stars AVOID DROP SHIPPERS!!!.......2007-06-09

Drop shippers are easily identified - If a seller lists EMS as a shipping meathod - They are a drop shipper - And you never know what you're going to receive or if you'll receive it at all - Because your order can get locked up in CUSTOMS for several weeks - And worse you may not be able to get a refund for the item. Always ask your seller if their product is being shipped with EMS. If so, don't buy - it's better to pay a little more and receive your product, rather than take a chance on not getting it at all.

5 out of 5 stars It is what it is.......2007-05-29

I have been through the first three seasons already and have not seen any glitches, bugs, or problems with the product. It came when it was estimated and is great condition. Thank you amazon

5 out of 5 stars Life Before James T. Kirk..........2007-05-26

Of all the ST series, I'd rank this as one of the best. While the original ST (a/k/a the Kirk and Spock show) was groundbreaking in many ways, it was more "sociological" SF without enough science to satisfy techno-SF nerds like me (I'm a computer jock by trade, and old enough to have seen the original series when it was shown for the first time). I thought STNG was better, liked STDS9 best of all, and never really got much into ST Voyager... but THIS series is great. In ST Enterprise, there's no great all-encompassing Federation (at least not yet), and we Earth people are still looked upon as a bunch of neobarbs who somehow managed to stumble into space.

The series draws on the lore of four other series and a whole string of movies, but it also goes into a lot of little nooks and crannies that haven't been explored yet. Did you know, for example that humans smell bad to Vulcan? But of course, Vulcans discipline themselves to ignore such things -- and also use a chemical agent to block the smell if they have to be in the presence of humans for very long.

Oh, yeah... lots of tasty little details here that will titillate the True Trekkie. And of course, it answers the BIG question: was there really life before James T. Kirk?

I've gotten through the first couple of seasons so far, and my only regret is that the series didn't last more than four. Of course, I could be wrong and it could fumble and stumble in the third and fourth years... but I think that in the first couple seasons alone, I got my money's worth.

Besides... T'Pal has GOT to be the best-looking Vulcan you're ever going to see...

Though often and unfairly dismissed as a Quantum Leap clone, the Fox TV series Sliders earned a substantial fan base thanks to its intriguing central premise--the existence of multiple alternate realities--and impressive special effects, both of which get a fine showcase in this six-disc DVD set. Jerry O'Connell leads the appealing cast as a college student who accidentally discovers a portal into alternate dimensions; with the help of his professor (Lord of the Rings' John Rhys-Davies), a spunky Girl Friday (Sabrina Lloyd), and a soul crooner (Cleavant Derricks), O'Connell encounters a host of strange parallel Earths, including a British-ruled United States and one where dinosaurs roam a national park. All nine episodes of the 1995 debut season and the 12-episode second season from '96, as well as the pilot from '95, are included in the aesthetically impressive set; extras, however, are limited to commentary by creators Tracy Torme and Robert K. Weiss on the pilot episode, and a making-of featurette with O'Connell and Derricks. --Paul Gaita

1 out of 5 stars Sliders went off the slide into insanity,,,,.......2007-06-23

This was among the brainless ideas for a time travel TV show ever.

All the cast did was look good, but they had no scripts to work with, and the multi-story arcs with so many things happening at once made it too difficult to understand, much less like.

    5 out of 5 stars A great sci-fi show.......2007-06-14

The first two seasons of Sliders are some of the best sci-fi television. A great premise that was done exceptionally well. A great buy for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars sliders a great sci fi series.......2007-04-22

i brought this yesterday for about 20 dollars it was nice to finally see this again, because i remembered watching it and i think it was a wonderful series and would love to purchase all the seasons as they come out. weither you like the cast changes are not if you like the show as much as i do, that shouldn't matter. if you claim to like the show. the packaging is to be desire unlike other shows with have cases for the disk but if you overlooked that and see the show that you enjoyed i wouldnt worry about that, now if it is where it may possibly hurt the discs get something to put them in. thanks for a great show

    5 out of 5 stars Sliders Season 1&2 Complete!.......2007-04-10

Don't believe the "naysayers"! This IS the complete 1st and 2nd seasons of Sliders. Season 1 is only 10 episodes and Season 2 is 13. On the set the 2 part "Pilot" episode has been combined into a single episode which gives the appearance of a missing episode. And, yes, the packaging is total crap!

The biggest drawback to this set is that the episodes are presented in the original airing order which was different than the production and intended air order which can be a bit confusing. Seek out the production order and watch in that sequence for a more rewarding view.

Don't let the poor packaging prevent you from enjoying one of the more innovative SF programs formerly on TV! Quinn, Arturo, Wade, and Rembrant will transport you to worlds of adventure!

If you are a fan of Science Fiction you will love it,

It is a combination of an Action packed series together with Drama and Romance which delivers a very enjoyable series.

    5 out of 5 stars Twilight Zone (1980's, seasons 2 & 3).......2007-04-12

I recorded every episode of this on VHS tape during the 80's when it was first-run. It is OUTSTANDING! It is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better than the UPN series that aired in 2003 or so...buy this if you are a Twilight Zone fan, and don't be surprised if you like it more than the original series...

5 out of 5 stars Episode: The Cold Equations.......2007-02-06

After having been sorely disappointed in the purchase of the feature length version of Tom Godwin's story (see review elsewhere on Amazon), I purchased this set primarily to see the treatment my favorite SciFi short story received. I was ENTHRALLED! The TZ's treatment was almost as good as the original written story (which is difficult to find in published form).
The Cold equations is a story that will haunt you, as it has me.
I was able to have my 20 yo son watch the episode. His reaction to it was similar to my own when I first read the short story in my teens.
Congrats to TZ for a wonderful episode. The words "He was not alone" live!

    3 out of 5 stars A worthy successor to Rod Serling's vision.......2006-04-16

The 1980s revival of "The Twilight Zone" had some memorable moments that would stand out in the minds of its viewers. While it did offer some changes (i.e. The Grateful Dead offering its version of the classic theme), all-in-all it was a good follow-on to the classic 1960s series. Purchase it if you are a die-hard TZ fan - if not, its worth a weekend rental.

    5 out of 5 stars so titillating.......2005-12-09

This is sweet sweet justice for those of us who grew up in the 80's and saw it at the time.

The stand-alone nature of every episode makes it great for this type of set. Skip the crappy ones and see a ton of great 80's television horror/comedy noir.

If you like Tales from the Crypt, Outer Limits (older or newer versions), et al. - you be glad to add this to a horror/fun collection.

    long live the 80's

5 out of 5 stars Buy the package deal.......2005-12-05

I bought season one because back in the 80's there must have been some competing show I was watching, like Cheers or whatever. So I never got to see a great revived series. There are a few yawners, but by and large it is an excellent collection.

Hear that kiddies. Those are mad dogs barking. People ask me why don't I just shoot them. Well I did shoot them, thats why there so mad. For anyone that has ever caught even one episode and liked it this is a great buy. You could start off and just buy, say one seasons worth, but when that last episode finishes and your yearning to hear the Crypt Keeper roll out just one more Tale... Well, you'll wish you had saved yourself the aching wait and just bought the whole set. I got all five seasons for Christmas and had finished all seventy some odd episodes before New Years rolled around. The stories are all great. Any fan of O'Henry will appreciate these, as they've all got the O'Henry twist at the end. I only wish they'd hurry up with seasons 6 and 7. It's a pity they didn't make more.

Once every season has been individually released, you just KNOW they are going to re-issue the complete series in a deluxe and very cool package, probably inside a crypt-like box replete with a miniature Cryptkeeper figure. I just know it's coming, and I HATE IT.

5 out of 5 stars Greetings, Boils and Ghouls!.......2006-08-18

The Tales From the Crypt series was some of the best television airing back in the final year of the 80s and into the early 90s. Deliberately over the top. Deliberately funny. Deliberately campy at times. Deliberately scary. Deliberately gory. Deliberately one of HBO's finest creations.

The episodes are all based on EC Comics of old...mostly from the self titled Tales From the Crypt and Vault of Horror comic books. But I'd guess that 90% of you reading this already know that, and you're here as I am delighted that it is finally out on DVD.

For those that have not seen these wonderfully entertaining episodes of dark humor and horror...if you're into the genre this collection and any of the other HBO seasonal Tales From the Crypt releases are for you.

Hit the Buy button. These'll kill ya! Or buy each season separately (at the time of this writing it's cheaper to buy 'em separately!).

Does it get any better than the X-Files? Each episode is packed with more thrills, chills and strange turns of events than most blockbuster films you shell out ten bucks to see. The X-Files has the advantage of a team of writers committed to creating stories based loosely in fact and incorporating frequently from the pages of history.
Political cover-ups, mind control, and reports of extraterrestrial contact an elite team of government officials is quick to stifle. None of this can be relegated to the annals of science fiction. Only a victim of memory altering experiments will suggest that the government is open and honest about its science and its knowledge of the strange and alien that Fox Mulder is so passionate about.
The X-Files succeeds because most of us believe that certain events and discoveries have been quickly concealed for the so-called good of the population. Some of us are more extreme than others. True conspiracy fanatics have come to regard the X-Files creators as harbingers of the truth, cleverly doling out information through pop television.
Most, though, simply enjoy the brilliance of each episode, as our hero Mulder, with his linear, skeptical and yet strangely sexy sidekick, Scully, uncover more phenomenon than most Hollywood producers could dream of in a lifetime.
Mulder is a loveable FBI agent in spite of his almost manic drive to uncover the truth, the product of a childhood experience that haunts him. Scully is like the sister you just want to shake and douse with water as she doubts what she sees even as ghoulish things slither from sewers in front of her.
The beauty of this show is that it doesn't rely on any one thing. The conspiracy theme can stand on its own because it is steeped in truth and it is apparent that the writers believe. The story lines are fascinating and often disturbing, whether you believe that such strangeness exists or not. The regular characters (you will love and hate the shady and infinitely powerful "smoking man" if you have not already met him) are joined each episode by new and dynamic players created by brilliant minds.
I received the entire X-Files collection as a gift and it is a durable one. I have almost gone through them one by one and, I suspect, I will one day do it all again. Because the truth is out there, my friends. And I'd like to be among the chosen one when THEY finally come for us.

5 out of 5 stars Best tv series i ever seen........2006-04-13

I just wanted to to say that i do agree with the price of this set being WAY too high. But there is 1 thing people are not concidering. amazon sells 2 versions of each season the cheaper $40 ones are not the boxed sets you see here. but then again are the original boxed sets worth that much more? who realy watches 50 hours worth of bonus material anyway? Personaly id rather pay the 40 bucks to just get the re-released sets that just have the episodes. i dont need to pay double for features i dont even watch. as far a the show itself goes, it is by far the best series i've ever seen. and instead of going on for 2 hrs saying why ill just leave it at that.

5 out of 5 stars 'The X-Files' Remains One of the Best TV Shows Of All Time.......2006-03-19

The X-Files is one of the best show that's been on television, in fact it has been brilliant, up until the last couple of seasons. When Mulder began dissappearing in the early part of season 8, the quality of the show began to fade away along with him.

To me the essence of The X-Files is the combination of Scully and Mulder working together to solve the mysteries of the unknown, and without that team work, there isn't a show worth watching. They had a unique balance between each other that consisted of mutual respect of each other's differences and a great friendship that helped them overcome all the odds they faced over the series' 9 seasons run.

The subtle and quirky humor Mulder had was one of many things that made the show so excellent, and the yin and yang like qualities that were seen in both Mulder and Scully perfectly complemented each other and created a dynamic relationship that forever changed the face of television, not to mention the tremendous character development seen as both grew older and wiser. It was very interesting to see how their platonic love evolved over the years to become a romantic, deep and transcendental love.

The show's cast over the years was excellent, with such unforgettable characters as Alex Krycek, the Cigarette Smoking Man CGB Spender, Assistant FBI director Walter Skinner and the list goes on. Despite numerous continuity problems with some of the characters, especially regarding Mulder's sister and the arching storyline of the government-alien conspiracy, the show remained intriguing and enchanting.

All that changed once John Dogget and Monica Reyes replaced Mulder as the show's other half, and although they've proven themselves as good actors, nobody can make up for the loss of the series' main character. It would be like watching Seinfeld without Seinfeld, or Star Wars without Luke Skywalker, in other words there is virtually no show without either character, because the series is based on that central character, or combination of characters.

I knew 'The X-Files would not last without Fox Mulder, and that the ratings would bottom out, and they did, which led to the show's cancellation. Even though I will greatly miss The X-Files, I was glad to see it end on a good note (Mulder returns in the final episode) rather than to have it drag out into obscureness with characters that have really nothing to do with what 'The X-Files' was all about, such as the super-soldiers sub-plot. The heart of the show was Mulder, with the aid of Scully, figuring out the far-reaching conspiracy while solving the occult and unexplained.

Even the last two seasons which were the weakest are still far better than most TV series, past and present. I have bought each season of The X-Files on DVD, a series this great is worth owning forever, and I know there will never be a series quite like it, nor as good. This is the TV collection to own, no doubt about it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Set....WAY to Expensive!!!!!.......2006-03-11

My husband is a HUGE x-files fan and has always wanted the series on DVD. There is NO WAY I'd pay $810.00 for the complete series so I did some research and found it on Amazon UK for $271.00 US dollars (including freight). You do need to know a couple of things though. First, U.S. DVDs are region 1 and U.K. DVDs are region 2. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY THESE DISCS ON YOUR REGULAR DVD PLAYER. You will need to buy a region free dvd player. The one I bought is now discontinued by the mfg but I paid $150 for it online. Just do a search for region free dvd players. Secondly, most of these sets are sold via third party and they don't ship orders internationally. I did get mine from Amazon UK and not a third party. It seems as though there is limited availability so they don't always have it. I just checked their website regularly (for about a month) and got lucky. If you really want the complete set, want it affordably and are patient, you can get it. My husband is thrilled with it. It arrived in great condition and in a timely manner. He has watched several episodes and they play beautifully. By the way, I bought the complete Ally McBeal series from Amazon UK for myself for less than $150. It's not even offered here in the US. I'm extremely happy with it as well.

The epic sci-fi series Babylon 5 was a unique experiment in the history of television. It was effectively a novel for television in five seasons, consisting of 110 episodes with a clear beginning, middle, and end. The first season introduces the main characters, headed this year by Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle), and familiarizes the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. The first episode, "Midnight on the Firing Line," plays at a breathless pace, introducing Commander Susan Ivanova (Claudia Christian) and establishing the conflict between the Narn and Centauri races as represented by their ambassadors, G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) and Londo Mollari (Peter Jurasik). B5 hits warp speed with a run of exceptional episodes building to the season finale. The two-part "Voice in the Wilderness" has Mars breaking into open revolt against Earth and the discovery of a "Great Machine" on the dead world Epsilon 3. Referencing 1950s sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet, the story leads to the superb time-travel-based "Babylon Squared." Season finale "Chrysalis" proves more than just the usual television cliffhanger, placing Minbari ambassador Delenn in conflict with her ruling Grey Council and forcing on her a decision that laid the groundwork for Babylon 5's eventually becoming a great love story.

Delenn's future love interest, Captain John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) arrived on Babylon 5 in the first episode of season 2, "Points of Departure." The show marked the handing over of command of B5 to Sheridan from Commander Jeffery Sinclair, actor Michael O'Hare becoming a victim of studio politicians who wanted a bigger star in the leading role. "Revelations" explains that Sheridan's wife, Anna, died during an archaeological survey of the world Z'ha'dum, the name being just one of many references to Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (the bridge at Khazad-Dum). "The Coming of Shadows" proved to be Babylon 5's finest hour to date, and in "In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum," Sheridan learns that Morden was on the ship on which Anna died. Three exceptional shows conclude the season. The Narn-Centauri war escalates in "The Long, Twilight Struggle," Sheridan faces a most unusual ordeal in "Comes the Inquisitor," and in "The Fall of Night" all hope of peace is shattered as a nerve-racking assassination attempt reveals a startling secret about Ambassador Kosh.

"Matters of Honor" launched Babylon 5's third season with the introduction of the White Star, a spacecraft added to enable more of the action to take place away from the station. Also introduced was Marcus Cole (Jason Carter)--in another nod to The Lord of the Rings, a Ranger not so far removed from Tolkien's Strider. A third of the way through the season "Messages from Earth," "Point of No Return," and "Severed Dreams" prove pivotal, changing the nature of the story in a way previously unimaginable on network TV. Earth slides into dictatorship, the fascistic Nightwatch takes control of off-world security, and Sheridan take decisive action by declaring Babylon 5 independent. "Interludes and Examinations" presented the death of a major supporting character, while the two-part "War Without End" reached apocalyptic dimensions in a complex tale resolving the destiny of Sinclair and the fate of Babylon 4, resolving a 1,000-year-old paradox and presenting a vision of a very dark future for Sheridan and Delenn. All this was trumped by the monumental "Z'ha'dum." In the preceding "Shadow Dancing" Anna Sheridan (Melissa Gilbert, Bruce Boxleitner's real-life wife) returned from the dead, no longer entirely human. In the mythologically resonant climax Anna invited Sheridan back to the Shadow homeworld with no hope of survival. Just as in The Lord of the Rings Gandalf fell into the abyss at Khazad-Dum, so Sheridan took a comparable leap into the unknown on an alien world.

Season 4 began on a high point with the Centauri Prime in the grip of the insane Emperor Cartagia (Wortham Krimmer) and a run of six shows leading to the climax of the war against the Shadows in "Into the Fire." If this colossal narrative was resolved a little too easily and the ultimate aim of the Shadows turned out to be a tad disappointing, it still proved to be the most powerful slice of space opera to ever grace the small screen. In the aftermath the sheer scale dropped back a little but the pace never slowed as the rest of the season played out in one relentless cycle of conspiracy, betrayal and conflict, Babylon 5 siding with the rebel Mars colony against the totalitarian Earth. On an unstoppable wave fuelled by roller-coaster plot twists and spectacular action shows from "No Surrender, No Retreat"--when Sheridan avows to overthrow EarthGov--to "Rising Star"--when the aim is realized--Babylon 5 achieved a consistent excellence rare in television. --Gary S. 5 out of 5 stars Four Down, One to Go.......2007-06-03

An excellent series, Babylon 5, brings to the screen the ongoing adventures and parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral space.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The year is 2258, ten years after the Earth-Minbari War, and representatives from the five major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, and the Vorlons, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. The complications, however, have only just begun...
Michael O'Hare, Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Jerry Doyle, Andrea Thompson (who is HOT!!!), Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.
In a nutshell, the show's strong points have to be:
      1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots that keep getting better and better!
      2) The GREAT character development, and
      3) The wonderful feeling of being ADDICTED to the show and wanting more!

In short, Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already)!

5 out of 5 stars B5's first four seasons are great.......2006-02-05

Babylon 5 was one of the best television series ever in the medium. Taken for all in all, it was the best SF/F show ever on television. This was because it didn't dodge the big questions:

      Who are we?
      What do we want?
      Where are we going?

It made those big questions the central focus of the series. It was good because it didn't always provide clear and succinct answers to them. Also, it made things very much like they are in the real world. Impure or evil motives might lead to actions with overall good outcomes, and good intentions may well pave the road to hell.

      J. Michael Straczynski is the reason is stayed focus on the large themes. JMS created the series and wrote all the episodes of the third session, as well as all the 4th session. He specifically looked to create myths that addressed the big questions in life.

You can't address the big issues without acknowledging the reasons that most people stop thinking about them: the minutia of life often makes us focus on little things that often don't bear on the larger issues. JMS wrote the series in a way that the big questions came into line with the little issues of life.

This focus allowed for characters to grow and change over the course of the series. For example, Vir, a character that starts off as a basic comic-relief player, yet ends up as one of those who can speak with great wisdom. The third session was when this change in him became evident. Also, the characters are not all perfect examples of morality and heroism: they each have their strengths and faults. This makes things much more believable. Especially since much of the underlying stories of good vs. evil is rather fanciful. In order to make it all believable is requires that there be underlying things that make sense, so that the home viewer can grab a handle on the program in order to anchor the rest of the story.

The normal human issues of alcoholism, drug addition, religion, family problems, bad marriages, etc. are all explored in the course of the show. This very much adds to the believability aspects of the program.

Many other shows with similar takes on the world of character development have been "St. Elsewhere", "Six Feet Under" and "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer". Even, dare I add it, various aspects of Star Trek, especially Deep Space Nine? (I won't go into the B5 vs. DS9 arguments.)

The acting in the show is normally good, with especially good performances by Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar and Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari.

The first season of the show is very rough, with about half the shows going from bad to poor. That said, in second season things got much better. The third session of Babylon 5 is probably the best of the five sessions the program was on the air. With the fourth session very close in quality to the third. The fifth was weird... very well made, and at times very well written, but in the end the 5th season was about the same in quality as the second. That would have been fine if it had come before season three and four.

One of the minor overall problems with the show is that, although clean and succinct answers are not always provided, they are sometimes forced in when they shouldn't have been. I am sure that this was not the intention all of the time, as the shows creative force was JMS. It is just that it is expected in TV land that they be provided. Basically, I am sure they were sometimes added because TV executives probably insisted on them. Especially when the message sometimes is that "there is no clear message". This can, at times makes the show feel a little clunky and schizophrenic.

I know that my criticism of this may sound almost as if I am contradicting myself. And that may be a minor problem with it in the show... maybe the show is contradicting itself in some ways. But then, that's life.

      5 out of 5 stars I couldn't believe that I would like this................2005-10-05

My partner told me about Babylon 5 a long time ago, when we first started dating, four years ago. He told me about B5 and I knew of it but when it first came out I was much younger than I am now. I couldn't find it on local tv or was to be in bed for church in the morning. Later I discovered it was on at midnight on Saturday turning to Sunday, so I never got to see it. Now that I am 29 and watched it when I was 28, I am so glad that I got to see it from beginning to end. We own them all. We bought them right after the other, cause we watch all our DVD's in order A to Z. I just had to see the next one. We watched them all in 3 months. $85 a set is much, but it was worth it. I lost interest in sci-fi when star trek came out with all these stupid things but this one just made me want to watch them more and more. Episode after episode and once we finished a DVD I bought the next or he did, I love this and recommend them to anyone and everyone. This isn't a HELP ME IN THE LAST 15 MINUTES EPISODE, it lasts till the next one is over and then there is another story for the next one. It was well written and the nay-sayers who don't like it, just never stay there for the whole thing, cause they like the HELP ME IN THE LAST 15 MIN EPISODE that all the other sci-fi's give them. This is and will always be the best sci-fi that I have ever seen. I won't tell you what happens. I just want you to experience it all for yourself. Well written, well acted, well detailed in other species, although, you'll have your favorties and you won't. BUT over all, it is the best that I have seen in a long time and it shall remain dear to me and when someone mentions sci-fi this is the ONE that shall always remain in my head. Star Trek could have come up with stuff like this, but it never did and lost me in DEEP SPACE NINE TO THE BABYLON 5.

1 out of 5 stars Awesome series, awful deal.......2004-04-18

As far as I can tell, this is merely the first 4 seasons all together. Go and price buying the seasons separately; you'll find it cheaper EVEN ON THIS SITE. I can't detect any special features in this package that don't exist in the separate season DVDs that I bought as they came out.

Babylon 5 is very probably the best series ever. It is the only series (so far) that was fully planned out, all 5 seasons, before it was filmed. It is somewhat of a miracle that it managed to get made... so help convince nay-sayers that they're missing out! Buy the DVDs... just not THIS one.

5 out of 5 stars BEST SHOW EVER. "A novel for TV" that lasts 100+ hours!.......2004-03-15

Yes, Babylon 5 is the best sci-fi show ever produced. No doubt in my mind. It simply is.

Season 1 starts slowly. Mainly because the show was not written by J. Michael Straczynski (series creator) but by outside help. Result: Lousy B-movie scripts. Only 5-6 episodes are truly good.

But then Seasons 2-5 arrive, and the series truly shines. This is the CORE of the Babylon 5 story. J.Michael Straczynski took the reins and wrote ~95% of the show. AND IT SHOWS. Seasons 2-5 start with battles, end with battles, and have plenty of drama in the middle. A new race called "The Shadows" starts pulling strings, manipulating the characters, and ultimately spinning off a war. And just when you think all is dark and dreary and depressing... all hell turns loose! The drama just builds and builds and builds.

And then we have... THE GRAND FINALE TO THE NOVEL FOR TV: Set 20 years in the future, this single episode will bring tears to your eyes, because it shows the death of the hero: President Sheridan. As series creator J.Michael Straczynski wrote:

"The sad truth is that we die. That is not a happy ending, not a sad ending, simply a fact. The question is what we accomplish during the days and months and years preceding; do we leave the world a better place or a worse place? If we have left the world around us a better place, as these characters did, then it's a happy ending. - - - - - Ultimately, for me, the end of B5 is neither a sad ending nor a happy ending; I'd say it was a graceful ending, a dignified ending, an ending that said individuals can effect profound change, if they are willing to put their own lives and happiness on the line; not happy, not sad, but a testament to the idea that you have used your time here well."

"What interests me, what I wanted to do with making this show, was in large measure to examine the issues and emotions and events that precede a war... the effects of the war itself... and the aftermath of the war. The war is hardware; the people are at the center of the story." Well said Mr. Straczynski, and thank you for creating this wonderful show. Like a classic novel, Babylon 5 reaches beyond mere entertainment. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Very good show.......2006-09-29

I highly recommend this show if you like scary but not overly gory. I love scary/horror movies and my friend doesn't but we can both watch Tales from the Crypt and enjoy it.

My only complaint is that you can buy Season 1 and 2 for almost half the price that amazon is listing it on this page. So buy them separately or it's also sold as a complete set (seasons 1-5), which I'd recommend if you really love the show.

5 out of 5 stars Greetings, Boils and Ghouls!.......2006-05-23
