Product Description

Something rotten is brewing beneath the industrial mecca known as Raccoon City. Unknown to its millions of residents, a huge underground bioengineering facility known as The Hive has accidentally unleashed the deadly and mutating T-virus, killing all of its employees. To contain the leak, the governing supercomputer, Red Queen, has sealed all entrances and exits. Now a team of highly-trained super commandos including Rain (Michelle Rodriguez - The Fast and the Furious, Girlfight), Alice (Milla Jovovich - The Fifth Element) and Matt (Eric Mabius - Cruel Intentions) must race to penetrate The Hive in order to isolate the T-virus before it overwhelms humanity. To do so, they must get past the Red Queen's deadly defenses, face the flesh-eating undead employees, fight killer mutant dogs and battle The Licker, a genetically mutated savage beast whose strength increases with each of its slain victims.

Marilyn Manson worked on the soundtrack, so it's no surprise that Resident Evil is best enjoyed by headbangers, goth guys, and PlayStation junkies. Like the interactive game it's based on, this horror hybrid pits a small band of SWAT-like commandos (including Milla Jovovich and Girlfight's Michelle Rodriguez) against a ravenous hoard of zombies, resulting in a gorefest that only sociopaths could love. The tenacious heroes are trapped inside the Hive--an underground complex where an evil corporation conducts illegal research with a deadly virus--and the zombies (reanimated corpses of sacrificed employees) are fodder for endless rounds of gunfire. It's utter nonsense (not unlike director Paul W.S. Anderson's previous Event Horizon), so your best defense is to wallow in it or avoid this trash altogether. A few cool sequences are borrowed from better films (that slice-and-dice laser is cribbed from the 1998 Canadian shocker Cube), but if you're in the mood for heavy-metal carnage, this movie's for you. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The best adaptation.......2007-07-06

I am about ten years from retirement to give you an idea of my age. And yet I enjoy many of the new horror movies if they have something besides all head banging music and tons of gore. This movie will rock your world no matter what age you are. Many adaptations of games do not make it in my replayable list. This one excels there. This is one you will find yourself regularly popping in the player for a revisit of the haunting music, great acting, and scary as hell zombies and other creatures. This is by far one of my favorite horror movies. Well thought out screenplay, excellent directing, and super music score. I give it a high recommendation. I haven't owned a console game since the first Nintendo, but this movie has tempted me to buy a new one even though I prefer the PC versions. By the way I did not care for the last Final Fantasy movie, but I'm sure game console gamers may. This movie although possibly not as appreciated by those with game consoles, will definitely be appreciated by Horror/SciFi movie fans. I recommend the sequel as well. Although not quite as scary, still quite good in the action department.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I had hoped........2007-06-28

I'll admit that I only wanted to watch this movie because I am currently addicted to the Resident Evil 4 game that just came out for the Wii. I read the reviews that said that fans of the video game need to have an open mind so I attempted to do so when I watched it. Still, I had a tough time really liking this movie, not because of how different it is from the game, but because it just wasn't entertaining.

So what's to like about this movie? First of all, there's a ton of eyecandy in terms of actors and actresses. Some that you may recognize are Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, and Eric Mabius. Second, it's action packed. Lots of guns, fast-paced music, matrix-like moves, and, of course, zombies. This is truly a movie that guys and gals will want to watch.

And what's not to like? The first part of the movie up until the laser scene (which really had me biting my nails) was great. From there, it went downhill. Let's first talk about the zombies. Apart from a couple here and there, they just weren't that scary. The majority of them looked like normal humans only they walk with a limp and like to bite people. And then you have this weird mass of regenerated tissue that's attacking people. If the writers fail to produce creatures that frighten the audience, what's left? The main plot about the virus is not engaging whatsoever and it's sometimes confusing to follow. There were a few things that went unexplained or could have been improved to make a better movie. Also, where's the climax? Without giving away any spoilers, the supposed "ta-dah!" scene of the movie was nothing to be excited about. Not to mention that the ending left me saying "That's it?".

Let's face it. A confusing plot, unimpressive monsters, and no climax make for a mediocre movie. I'm sorry to say that I was disappointed with this film.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent fun. Fans of the game will hate this movie. To them I say "Keep an open mind idiots!".......2007-06-26

While this movie bears the name of Resident Evil it does not follow the game story line at all. In fact other than the evil corporation Umbrella, the zombies and the licker, this movie has nothing to do with the game. If this movie had been called anything other than Resident Evil it would have been an excellent movie. Milla Jovovich is a severely underrated actress she is great as Alice. All the cast is very good you feel for them when they get hurt or they die. In my opinion those who are hard-core fans of the game keep an open mind and try too watch the movie as what it is: a good Zombie flick.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst video-game based movies ever.......2007-05-15

Flaunting what has to be some of the most laughable CGI, or any sort of special effects in the history of filmmaking, this well over hyped movie exhibits the bulk of what is wrong with the so-called mainstream "art" of movie making all in this one film.

Based on the popular video game series, which, by the way, if you want a real scare you'd be better off watching the game unfold while playing it, the greatest downfall of Resident Evil is in the special effects and the acting department.

The first few minutes into Resident Evil, a good three-fourths into the film, the movie is interesting and leaves much more than the given final product to be desired.

Those familiar with the game will recall The Mansion.

The first few scenes both in The Mansion and on its grounds are breathtaking.

Minus the slight nude scene of Milla Jovovich, which, would not have been a problem had it (artistically) motivated the plot even a little, the opening sequence and scenes in The Mansion are pretty satisfactory.

Then came the acting...

The most annoying thing about this movie is that a lot of times real acting is replaced with gestures, facial expressions, or over acting, which we misinterpret as real and good or great acting.

As is the case in Resident Evil, the men and women do not act but rather spew out unoriginal, recycled dialogue and give repetitive puppy-eyed (Jovovich) or tough-guy er...chick expressions (Michelle Rodriguez), for the duration of the film.

Even more, there is the emotional attatchment.

It's a zombie movie.

Once your best friend turns into a zombie what do you do? You shoot them.

While that would obviously be hard to do, after the first or second friend turns into a zombie you would think these characters would know not to put their hands under the face of someone who is obviously alive yet not responsive or wait almost two minutes to make a move (while in the meantime getting teary-eyed and letting down their guard).

As far as the special effects, laughable sums it up.

I hope that the special effects team members do not consider this film a staple of their artistic careers and achievements...

In one scene, there are a set of creatures which come out of a set of cargoes. These creatures look like Nimrod from NBC's Surface (which works on the show but needless to say, not in this movie).

There is one creature in Resident Evil which was royally totalled beyond measure in comparison to its realistic and terrifying graphic depiction in the game. Those who have played Resident Evil will know whom (or the "it" to whom) I am referring to.

It's the creature on the wall.

In the game, as the character walks around this corner you see the creature on the wall crawling toward him.

I can't even compare the paralyzing effect that the game had on me, which made me pause it at some moments for days on end for fear of the next creatures to be encountered(lol).

The movie never came close to this kind of terror.

Lastly, the special effects which helped in the killing off of certain characters was also very mediocre.

I will not describe in detail (so as not to detract from your movie-watching pleasure) but I will say that you will laugh much more than you will cringe.

In conclusion, my advice is play the game, don't buy the movie.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD STUFF.......2007-04-17

I really liked this movie. The sets were excellent, the acting decent, the action very good. I never played the game so I came into it totally unbiased. This is definately on my top ten list of movies to watch on cold winter days when I'm able to curl up in front of the tv and enjoy myself.

You've already got the basic story line from other folks and apparently this is a 'love it' or 'hate it' type. Maybe if you can see the movie while putting aside the game you'll have a better time. Just sit back and enjoy the story and the action. You'll do just fine.

With its brisk 83-minute running time, An American Haunting is compact enough to be recommended as an occasionally spooky sampling of historical horror. Based on Brent Monahan's novel The Bell Witch: An American Haunting, which in turn was inspired by the only known case (from 1818-20) in which the U.S. government officially acknowledged a death by supernatural forces, writer-director Courtney Solomon's film is a well-crafted 19th-century case study involving Tennessee land-owner John Bell (Donald Sutherland), his worried wife Lucy (Sissy Spacek), and the terrifying abuse of their daughter Betsy (Rachel Hurd-Wood) by a malicious poltergeist. Intensified by excessive sound effects and a nerve-jangling score, these nightly hauntings won't scare anyone who's seen The Exorcist, and they grow increasingly repetitious even as Spacek and Sutherland make the most of their underwritten roles. Solomon (who previously brought Dungeons and Dragons to the big screen) seems more interested in visceral terror than fleshing out the details of this interesting story of dark secrets and child abuse, and his over-used bag of tricks includes time-lapse footage, flashes of negative images, black-and-white (to signal an imminent haunting), and a variety of physical effects designed to keep your adrenaline flowing. It works, to a point (although the present-day framing scenes are completely unnecessary), and An American Haunting makes a good double-feature with The Exorcism of Emily Rose, a far better film with similar subject matter. This good-looking, bleakly moody fright-fest is also noteworthy as the next-to-last screen credit for Adrian Biddle, the esteemed cinematographer of such high-profile hits as Aliens, Thelma & Louise, The Mummy, and V for Vendetta, the latter completed just prior to Biddle's fatal heart attack in December 2005.--Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Haunting Indeed.......2007-06-29

Recommended. Good acting, good story and quite chilling in parts. Best "spooky" movie I've seen in a while.

3 out of 5 stars haunting indeed.......2007-06-26

As the movie is based on true events that led to the only death with cause registered as supernatural events, I was indeed interested. When I found veteran actors Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek were in it, I was even more interested. The tale is well told overall with some decent effects and some that were a bit subpar, but with the exception of the overdone breakneck horse and carriage chase scene, the secondary characteristics of movie effects were well in balance. The writing is decent enough as well, but for some reason many of the actors seemed to be robotic in the delivery of their lines. One serious plus for the movie was an outstanding music score that goes farther beyond setting the tone for the movie than the eerie talking spirits heard constantly throughout key scenes. Since we have seen the premise of this film worked over and over in many other movies, it is difficult to conceive of a delivery much different than we see here and the producers and director were obviously banking on the fact that their movie wasn't the work of fiction, rather, fact. Faults aside, An American Haunting is a decent enough horror movie that will keep you interested until the creepy end.

4 out of 5 stars Great Suspense.......2007-06-25

This movie is one of my favorites for the element of "Make you jump" suspense. I did alright with it, however, my wife didn't. She screamed,I jumped and wet myself (Ok, maybe an exaggeration on the jumping part)not only because of the movie, but the high decibel pitch accompanying it. We enjoyed this movie all the way till the end. The greatness of this movie depends on your level of "Horror". Great imagery, and the story makes you guess what the turn in the plot will be. I recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing horror film which fails to generate any suspense or horror and is occasionally downright laughable.......2007-06-14

What's it all about?
An American Haunting is set in Tennessee in 1817 and is based on the supposedly true story of the Bell Witch. When John Bell (Donald Sutherland) is cursed by a local woman, strange things start happening to him and his teenage daughter, Betsy (Rachel Hurd-Wood).

Initially, the spooky occurrences are limited to weird noises in the house, but the entity gets more and more violent and only seems to attack the father and daughter, while the mother (Sissy Spacek) and older brother (Thom Fell) can only watch in horror.

Various attempts at exorcism are performed by both a local reverend (Matthew Marsh) and a schoolteacher (James D'Arcy) but nothing seems to work and the poltergeist keeps getting angrier.

The Good
Sutherland and Spacek are always good value and they do the best they can, although you can tell that they'd really rather be somewhere else. However, the stand out is Rachel Hurd-Wood, who gives an impressive performance, despite spending large portions of the film in bed. Hopefully she'll go on to bigger and better things after this.

The Bad
The film's biggest problem is that, like last year's The Exorcism of Emily Rose, it comes across as a cheesy rip-off of The Exorcist. Unfortunately, it's not remotely scary and writer-director Solomon resorts to all sorts of cheap tricks to try and convince us otherwise. That said, the climactic sequence is intriguing, but you can't help feeling the film would have been more effective if the truth had been revealed from the start.

However, the film's biggest mistake is to book-end the film with a truly atrocious sequence set in the present day. The ending, in particular, is likely to cause unintentional laughter.

Worth seeing?
In short, this is a disappointing film that could easily have been a lot better. Rent The Exorcist again instead.

1 out of 5 stars This thing sucked so bad !!!.......2007-06-06

Oh, What a lousy film ! It had potential for a very creepy and moody 19th century supernatural thriller, but instead it was hashed out as an embarrassing and laughable attempt at something that almost qualifies as a weekend filler on the Lifetime Network or ABC Family. Most historical accounts of the Bell Witch are admittedly based on arguably validated fabrications that attempt to outdo themselves with each successive evolution, and some accounts (true or not) are quite scary. This movie doesn't really follow any of them, and instead capitalizes on a known legend and dresses it up with levitations, ghost wolves, and creaky floorboards. They couldn't even use the clichés properly. (The levitation and slapping scenes made me laugh)

As a positive, some of the wolf scenes are well done (such as being chased in the forest) despite the fact that it does nothing for the story. Also, the stagecoach flipping was an exceptionally executed stunt.

However, there are a few shots of the wolf (prancing under the window or trying to evade the flipping stagecoach through the fog) on which the obvious CG work was so poor that I found it a distraction.

Finally, the acting was so subpar that it seems a waste to have used such high powered talent...unless they were being blackmailed or being paid scale, I can't make sense of that one.

Avoid this movie. It is not scary.

It sucks.

Inspired by Hanna-Barbera's popular cartoon series, which premiered in 1969, Scooby-Doo stars in his second full-length film (made in 1988). Shaggy has accepted a job as a gym teacher at Miss Grimwood's Finishing School for Ghouls, a gothic girls' school that instructs the daughters of frightfully famous monsters such as Dracula, Werewolf, Mummy, and Frankenstein. Once Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy get over their spooky welcome, they settle into academic and athletic routines (like scarobic exercises) and enjoy an other-worldly relationship with the delightful Miss Grimwood and her gals. Shaggy prepares his students for a big volleyball tournament against the boys' military academy next door, a setup for all sorts of ghoulish gimmicks. And, of course, there's Back to School Night, where the girls' parents attend an enjoyable Who's Who event of monstrous proportions. Meanwhile, amid all the happy hauntings, Revolta, the Witch of the Web, is scheming to be "the most feared name in the monster world" and to make the girls' school "part of her evil team forever." In a final showdown, it takes a joint effort of the boys and girls to defeat the evil Revolta and her spider-bat flunkies. This predictable modern-day cartoon is a disappointing departure from Scooby's classic 1970s episodes, those campy detective romps full of lunacy and quirky humor and sprinkled with slapstick suspense. Scooby-Doo fans will also miss his wacky cohorts Freddy, Daphne, and Velma, as well as their invincible Mystery Machine. At least the original voices remain the same, namely Don Messick as Scooby and Casey Kasem as Shaggy. (Ages 5 to 10) --Lynn Gibson

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-04-16

My kids are huge Scooby Doo fans. We own about 20 Scooby DVD's and this one is BY FAR the worst! Even my daughter thought it was awful and she never criticizes anything Scooby Doo.

This movie is not your typical "Mystery Inc solves another mystery" movie. Only Scooby and Shaggy are in this one, and they are really more like the supporting cast. The main characters are the annoying teachers and students of the Ghoul School.

Don't waste your time or money on this one. It's not worth it.

1 out of 5 stars Truly Awful .......2006-11-23

The worst Scooby movie we own, and we have almost all of them! Talk about overly loooong and boring. No Velma, Fred and Daphne. Scrappy Doo (UGH!!) Stupid story line and filled with boring scenes that do nothing to tell the story, they're just fillers. Go buy Alien Invaders, Legend of the Vampire Rock, Zombie Island, Aloha Scooby, Where's My Mummy, or Monster of Mexico. We can watch them 100 times and they're still entertaining. Anything but this!!!

5 out of 5 stars I love this one!.......2006-11-08

I prefer this over the old 1970s Scooby Doo Mysteries! In this one the monsters are real and it's actually as silly as the Adams Family but silly in a good way! It's old school cartoons at their finest! The newer scooby doo series seems rather dull even with it's better animation!

4 out of 5 stars Very cute movie, great for kids-that's who it's for-right?!?.......2006-07-29

I have to agree with many of the other reviews in that, I missed the rest of the gang and I am not a big fan of Scrappy Doo. That said however, this movie is extremely cute and entertaining. My 3 year old daughter loves it. It does get a bit repetitive with 'suttle' jokes, but other than that, it is a very good movie. Not like their typical Scooby flicks, and that is why it is neat to see something different. Better than Zombie Island-that is awful for children. They crossed a fine line in that one!

Ray Sawyer (Rick Cramer), Agnes Bruckner (Eden), Laura Ramsey (Rachel), Jonathan Jackson (Eric), and D.J. Cotrana (Sean) star in this scary and bloody slasher movie.

Eric and Eden are going through any typical teen romance; going steady one minute, broken up the next. Eden works at a local truck stop as a waitress. One evening, Ray pulls into the truck stop to get some food. Known as the local nut case, Ray has few friends and owns a filling station on the edge of town. Later that same evening, Ray comes upon Eric and Eden on a lonely bridge. Swerving to miss Eric's jeep, Ray instead crashes into an on-coming car. The impact of the crash sends the car slamming through the guardrail of the bridge. The car is now teetering precariously on the side of the bridge. Ray jumps from his truck and goes to the aid of the woman inside the car. After pulling her to safety, Ray goes back inside to retrieve a suitcase that the woman told him about. However, both Ray and the car tumble over the side of the bridge and into the water below. To make matters worse, the suitcase is full of poisonous snakes, who immediately begin striking at Ray. All that can be heard are Ray's screams as the car sinks.

Ray's body is pulled from the water and taken to the local morgue. But it doesn't remain there for long. It seems that the woman in the car was a Voodoo priestess, and the snakes were used to "cleanse" people by drawing the evil out of them. Now, the evil venom is flowing through Ray. Now begins a bloodbath of carnage as Ray, possessed by the power of the evil venom flowing through him, begins to stalk unsuspecting victims. One by one, he exacts his revenge on Eden's friends until only Eden remains. Who will win this final showdown; Ray or Eden?

I've always been a big fan of slasher-type films, and characters like Freddy from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, as well as Jason from "Friday the 13th". Ray Sawyer fits the mold of the typical slasher perfectly. The motives are the same; kill as many teenagers as possible, and Ray succeeds in this very well. I thought the story involving voodoo was well-conceived. The special effects were good, too.

I recommend this movie to horror and slasher fans. Although the movie is short (only about 80 minutes), there's lots of slashing in a short amount of time. If you enjoy a good slasher flick, then don't miss "Venom".

3 out of 5 stars All Over The Map!!!.......2007-03-15

This movie has no real focus and just slithers around from one scare to another much akin to the poorly rendered CGI snakes that pop up in the film. The setting is great, the acting is fair. At one point, the dialogue was so bad that I had to turn it off: "So, that's what the underside of a car looks like," as uttered by one of the characters who comes across a vehicle overturned by the villain. I wanted this movie to be more like Candyman, and a little less riddled with bubble-gum teen angst. The cast would probably be better utilized in another film altogether. I actually wanted to check this flick out as I am a fan of Bijou Phillips, but even her role was wasted and unnecessary. The one-dimensional character who becomes the super-strong villain Mr. Jangles--there was nothing terrifying about him. I attribute this to unusual, choppy editing that marked his appearances in the film and detracted from his potential as a formidable foe. Anyway, see this only if you enjoy voodoo themes and Louisiana settings. Otherwise, as far as teen slasher fare goes, it is skippable.

3 out of 5 stars In Bijou Phillip's immortal words: "Voodoo is bad".......2006-12-31

How's this for no good deed going unpunished. When Ray (the purported town "freak"; a freak because, according to the cast, he has a really icky scar on his face) tries to rescue a woman whose car is rocking perilously over the side of a bridge, how was he to know that she's actually a voodoo priestess and the bag she's so adamant about is loaded with snakes carrying the sins of countless evil souls that will sink their needle-like fangs into him, injecting all that venomous evil into his veins, turning him into one pissed off tow truck driver. Thus is the storyline of Venom, a half-hearted attempt toward reviving the slasher genre and to create a new Freddy, Jason, Michael baddie. The movie is produced by Kevin Williamson and directed by Jim Gillespie. The last time they collaborated was on I Know What You Did Last Summer. Since then, it's been mostly downhill for both. What we have with Venom is a pleasing-enough slasher affair, with plenty of blood, just the right atmosphere and a good first hour to sustain its viewers attention. Beyond that first hour the movie runs out of steam and stumbles on for another twenty minutes until the requisite setup for a sequel. Don't hold your breath for that one. The movie is nicely photographed and Gillespie has an eye for style. You can almost smell the buyou's stagnant water. It's a desent slasher, and since slashers of any kind are in short supply now-a-days, it's worth a look. Oh, and kudos for that idiotic subplot indicting poor Ray as a deadbeat dad just for that ten second payoff involving a human voodoo doll. For shame.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Slasher That Satisfies.......2006-12-29

"Venom " is one of those movies I thought I would hate because I heard so much negativity about it but I really enjoyed it ,being a fan of the 70's and 80's slashers I crave newer versions because I have seen all the other ones over and over again.
Venom did NOT disappoint me.
It starts off with action and never lets up.I found it to be one of my favorite new horror/slasher flicks,The voodoo angle was good but not overplayed ,I'm simple in that I want to see a killer with an axe , machete butcher knife etc not a bunch of supernatural mumbo jumbo..I don't want to have to wonder" was that a dream or was it real~!!" As so many movies these days play off of.
Give me an old fashioned slice and dice and I'm in heaven.and Venom gave me that , So I hope to see Venom 2 ,if so ,I'm there

(For the record, Mr Jangles used the hook & Chain before Kane in see No Evil...)
..

2 out of 5 stars Another teen slasher.......2006-10-24

So what kind of movie is this from the director of "I know what you did last summer?" It's basically another installment of the same genre with a similar set-up and similar function. Deep down, Venom is just another teen slasher movie. They rode into this film with the same clichéd scares, a young group of teens, a psycho killer, and a traditional ending.

So is it worth seeing?

That I can't completely answer for you. If you like more of the same old, then it's probably going to be a blast. The filmmakers were smart enough to throw in a few thrilling moments among the mundane, overused plot. I found some parts to be slightly unpredictable, and they did a good job detailing some suspenseful moments near the third act of the film. The voodoo element allowed for some additional surprises and kept the killer from being simply "an unstoppable evil force."

But individually, do the separate factors of this film combine to make a masterpiece? Quite frankly, in my opinion at least....no. Let's take a look at some of them;

Acting- Well done, well directed too I might add. The acting is realistic to a degree, and brings us into the film. The actors responded (for the most part) realistically to the story line and I think that this was set-up nicely. The major issue here was the persistence in finding a gun when the killer is already dead, not to mention a demon child of voodoo hoodoo.

Lighting- Dim, dark and mysterious; the lighting definitely amplified the mood of this film. Combined with the swamp-like location, I think that it sets a perfect example of what a good location combined with good lighting can do- make a relatively unattractive plot look beautiful.

Special Effects- They set this up pretty well. A few scenes made me cringe and I felt that the artists working on the film definitely put their hearts into it...or bled them out for it. The gore wasn't excessive, but just right for a slasher film, and props to the director for making that call. My only qualm with this is that they used the standard Halloween "stage blood" which is just basically a thick bright red liquid that looks nothing like blood despite its color. A few of the actors squirm around in it, only to look like they're rolling around in pizza sauce. There are a few other tacky special effects, including the last major one in the film.

The Killer- Mr. Jangles....? Enough said...sounds like a dog. I'll give the killer credit for being a good actor, but the portrayal needed a lot of work. The make-up kicked it up a notch, but the slow-motion style jumps and action-movie style stunts didn't do it justice. The man looked like an athlete and moved like one...not like a reincarnated being housing the souls of 13 evil spirits. Although I don't specifically know what that looks like....I'm sure they don't run like football players.

So what overall? It's ok. Not something I'd be dying to see, and I'm glad that I didn't run to the theatre to catch the first showing. It has some good moments and some bad, but doesn't really stand out from any normal Hollywood production.

My recommendation?

It's ok. I'd rather go rent Containment instead; the first movie in a long time to completely blow my mind. It's good to know that there is still some talent out there somewhere and that it still filters into the film world now and again...

A 12-year-old moves with his newly divorced father to Dad's hometown and confronts the usual bullies, town curses, and rampaging by the undead in this screen adaptation of the R.L. Stine juvenile novel of the same name. Danny's first introduction to Walker Falls is the police removal of his spooky door decorations because Halloween is forbidden in this All Hallows' Eve answer to Footloose. To make matters worse, his grandfather (the ever wacky Christopher Lloyd) dies in a pumpkin accident and comes back as a goofy zombie ready to help Danny and his new (girl)friend solve the town mystery. Packed with lots of gross-out zombie action and plenty of junior high humor, this PG-rated film contains mild horror scenes, but no naughty words and one innocent kiss. Fans of the book series should be satisfied with this 93-minute adaptation, which may even inspire some young viewers to pick up a book. (Ages 9 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

Twelve-year-old Danny Walker is shocked to learn that the small Minnesota town he just moved to can't celebrate Halloween because of a local curse. With the help of his recently deceased (but still kicking) Uncle Fred, Danny must battle an army of prankster ghouls rising from the ground to break the curse once and for all - and bring back the magic of Halloween.

4 out of 5 stars Halloween Family Favorite.......2007-01-10

We first saw this movie on ABC Family. It's just enough of a scare for the entire family no matter the age. There's humor, too!

4 out of 5 stars PRETTY DECENT FAMILY HALLOWEEN FLICK.......2004-10-23

This was orginally a TV movie which plays every year on the Family Channel. As family Halloween movies go it's pretty decent. Not so scary that very young ones cannot watch but good enough that adults will enjoy it as well.

The story was written or at least based on a story by R.L. Stine of Goosebumps fame and really plays like an extended episode of the old Goosebumps TV show.

A wonderful imaginative and fun Halloween story. Of course one must suspend belief for a while, but it is worth watching. Christopher Lloyd is his usual manic self, and brings life to what would be a typical zombie/monster movie without his energized performance.

When 12 year old Danny Walker moves to his Patriarchal home town in Minnesota he finds that the town does not celebrate Halloween, and things are not quite what they appear to be.

An enjoyable movie that may be destined to be a Halloween classic.

4 out of 5 stars Family Halloween Film........2003-10-07

WHEN GOOD GHOULS GO BAD is a made for television movie, based upon a R.L. Stine story that first aired a few years ago on the Fox channel. The movie is narrated by and stars Christopher Lloyd as the patron of his small town. He has everyone call him Uncle Fred, including his own son and grandson and is a town legend. Uncle Fred used to own the chocolate factory that was the town's bread and butter. However, after a tragic accident involving a baking kiln that Uncle Fred had donated to the local high school, he shut the factory down and the town has been struggling ever since. However, with the accident at the school there also came a curse, that the town was to never celebrate Halloween again or else the young man who was baked alive would come back from the grave to destroy the town. Twenty years pass and Uncle Fred's son and grandson move back to town, wanting to celebrate Halloween. However, the townspeople won't have it. Then strange events start to happen and things go from strange to just plain bizarre.

WHEN GOOD GHOULS GO BAD is a good family Halloween movie to watch together. There isn't anything too scary and much of what could be frightening is tapered with a good sense of humor. The story is easy to follow and the acting is fairly well done for a made for tv flick. Christopher Lloyd is always a joy to watch and if for no other reason, this movie is worth watching for his performance. There aren't a whole lot of deep messages in the movie, though it does have a lot to say about the importance of family and staying connected (in more ways than one). Happy Halloween viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2001-11-13

Good fun Halloween movie takes place in a town where nobody celebrates Halloween, or even says the word Halloween because of a past tragety. The movie is about about a boys grandpa who dies after having a "Halloween" (getting hit on the head by a pumpkin) and comes back, as a good guy.

Van Helsing: The London Assignment is a wild and clever animated prequel, slightly more than a half-hour, to the live-action hit film about 19th-century monster hunter Dr. Gabriel Van Helsing. Set just before actor Hugh Jackman's dark hero heads off for battle with Count Dracula in Eastern Europe, The London Assignment finds Van Helsing attempting to stop Dr. Jekyll, and the latter's terrifying associate, Mr. Hyde, from their bizarre and bloody quest to turn septuagenarian Queen Victoria into a lovelorn girl again. While the widescreen artistry is often brutal, it is also breathtaking, especially in a fantastic chase sequence involving train cars. Besides Jackman, several actors from the feature lend voices to their cartoon counterparts, including Robbie Coltrane (as Hyde), Alun Armstrong (as Cardinal Jinette), and David Wenhman (as sidekick Carl). Special features include an incisive interview with Jackman about his character. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars A New Opening.......2007-01-10

The Van Helsing movie opens with Van Helsing in a final battle with Mr. Hyde in Paris. This short animated adventure tells you how he got to that point. Van Helsing and Carl travel to London to investigate some sinister killings of young prostitutes. But the chase leads to far more complex plots than just the killing on young women.

Van Helsing gets tied up in a plot that involved Dr. Jekyll who is physician to Queen Victoria. The not-so-good doctor is obsessed with the Queen and has devised a plot to further his own ends with her. As we know from the full-length movie, Mr. Hyde manages to get to Paris. I won't reveal who the battles progress or the details of the plot but I found it to be rather entertaining. Other than Mr. Hyde being huge (taken from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) unlike in Stevenson's book where Hyde is smaller than Jekyll, the story doesn't twist his tale as much as that of Dracula in the longer feature.

The animation is clean and the voices are true (Hugh Jackman and others from the feature film). If you enjoyed the feature film then you are sure to enjoy this one as it is very true to the movie (other than Carl being in the field). Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Van Helsing.......2006-08-17

I rate this cartoon movie at three stars, but the documentary is worthy of 5 stars. Its actually worth the price just for the documentary. Its basically a great making of feature about the 2004 Van Helsing film.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2005-11-16

This movie is reasonably good. It's something to watch when you're bored but don't want to sit through a long, gritty movie. The London Assignment is short, sweet, and packs quite a bit into it.

3 out of 5 stars "Van-Fluff", the perfect way to describe it........2005-09-04

This over all prequel to motion picture is just an overblown fluff piece that could have been saved or perhaps will show up on the eventual DVD release of Van Helsing.

The animation feature is nicely done and the sound is great. The supliments are more or less a kind of press junket for te feature film follow-up.

At only a half-hour running time, you wish it was at least 80 mins. Hugh Jackman and the cast provide voice talent to bring this 'teaser' to life.

Rating: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

1 out of 5 stars Even Worse Than The Movie.......2005-05-27

Well, they did it with the Riddick series and it succeded, so I guess Universal decided it would work for Van Helsing as well. This is one of the hugest pieces of crap I've ever seen make it to DVD. Everything about it including the music and voices make it seem like some episode of a boring Saturday morning cartoon. From the first minute of it I was wishing for it to be over, and when it was I was happier than ever. If you didn't like the movie you'll probably hate this, likewise if you didn't like this but haven't seen the movie I doubt you'll like it either. If you liked the movie and haven't seen this I can't guarantee you'll like this short. Universal Studios have never sank so low in the history of their moviemaking.

5 out of 5 stars Funny story, suitable for all ages, safe for small ones........2005-10-14

This is a fun little Halloween story about 3 sisters that are witches. Two of the sisters are incompetent and seem to get their spells a little mixed up. The other sister is in charge and very powerful indeed. The otehr two are trying to make pumpkin pies to throw at trick or treaters when they accidentally turn their sister into a pumpkin that rolls away. They are tempted to leave her like that since she is so mean, but decide to track her down and help her. In the meantime a young boy finds the withc-pumpkin and thinks she is a battery operated talking pumpkin and used her as the centerpiece for his Halloween party. In this story a witch needs her hands to do a spell so she can't save herself and now needs her sisters.

All in all a good story for the holiday, very funny, and no scary moments for smaller kids. Lots of laughs for the older ones, cute characters, good jokes and sight gags. I reccommend.

5 out of 5 stars The Ghoul.......2007-02-24

MGM bare bones dvd. Really good early 1930's horror has Boris Karloff rising from the grave for revenge. Can you beat that? The transfer is excellent for a film of this age. Still good without extras.

3 out of 5 stars Minor horror effort.......2007-01-31

"The Ghoul," a British production that Boris Karloff starred in shortly after achieving stardom with "Frankenstein," opens impressively with some excellent, literate dialogue and the promise of first class chills to come, then rapidly descends into a fairly campy retread of "The Mummy."

The impressive cast almost redeems this minor horror effort, with Ernest Thesiger - yes, Horace Femm of "The Old Dark House" and Dr. Pretorious of "Bride of Frankenstein" - stealing the show as Karloff's prissy, Bible quoting man-servent.

"The Ghoul" is worth a look for fans of both Karloff and '30's horror films, but its relative obscurity is deserved.

5 out of 5 stars A Lost Treasure.......2006-05-13

The Ghoul quite has the sense of a lost treasure, it is brilliantly filmed with dark, moody sets and strong, sparse, directional focused lighting, giving an all over creepy feel to a movie where the title role of 'the ghoul' is only actually seen in about three scenes and is never a real threat to anybody. It boasts stellar performances from Boris Karloff and his fellow cast members, particually Kathleen Harrison as Kaney, a simple, quirky, overly cheerful girl besotted with a phony Sheik who seems destined never to amount to anything other than the leading lady Dorothy Hyson's supporting role, but out of sheer chance ultimatly saves the day.
The sound is dreadful and it is quite difficult to hear the words beyond the muffled spits and scratches of the deteriated film, but don't let this put you off. Generally if you love films of this period as I do you are used to, even enjoy their historic aging. Considering this film was lost until the late 1960s when it was discovered in someones basement, you really have to expect a certain amount of spits and scratches and honestly this very poor quality adds much of the atmosphere and sense that the viewer is watching something unseen for generations.

4 out of 5 stars A rare gem beautifully restored.......2006-02-25

This is a hard-to-find Karloff film, done in England. It's very atmospheric and it has some fascinating characters, not the least of which is that hoot of an old queen, Ernest Thesiger, in one of the meatiest roles he's done since THE OLD DARK HOUSE. The restoration is wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars A golden oldie.......2005-10-15

Worth a look this movie, not my favourite Boris Karloff film by any means and not my favourite 1930's horror film. Having said that it would make it into my top 15 1930's horror film list if I made one! A small role for Boris but a good performance none the less. I got it for a bargain price of £1.50 this dvd and I have to say that the transfer is wonderful for such an old movie, extras are few but the film is what counts. 3 and a half stars is my true score for this small gem. Ernest Thesiger puts in a good perfomance also, not as good as he did in The Bride Of Frankenstein though.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes They Come Back..........2007-07-04

From the wonderfully twisted minds of horror-meisters Benjamin "Bob" Clark and Alan Ormsby, comes DEATHDREAM (aka: Dead Of Night, originally released in 1972). This wicked tale of terrifying wish-fulfillment is right up there w/ the other Clark / Ormsby classics, CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS and BLACK CHRISTMAS! Richard Backus is unnerving as Andy Brooks, re-animated vietnam casualty. His slowly rotting, soulless zombie character is unforgettable! John Marley (The Godfather, It Lives Again) plays Andy's dad. DEATHDREAM is "The Monkey's Paw" w/ an amped up scare factor and a sly political statement about the war. As a straight horror movie alone, this is a masterpiece! It's well past time that Clark and Ormsby got the recognition they deserve! I only wish they'd made more horror movies together. Watch for their cameos too (as a cop and a bystander respectively)! Also, this is Tom Savini's first make-up effort, as Alan Ormsby's assistant! Buy immediately...

4 out of 5 stars He's back..........2007-01-25

...I was pretty pleased with this fairly unknown film. I bought it along with "Unlce Sam" in a "Zombie Two-fers" pack. It is about a Vietnam soldier. His family is notified that he has died, yet he later shows up home. He begins to behave strangely, and later has to kill people to inject their blood into his body in order to regenerate his body, as it starts to decay once it is out of blood. Interesting film here, not at all boring. Would tell you more about it, but don't want to ruin it for you.

5 out of 5 stars Andy came home, some boys never do...........2007-01-22

Deathdream is a farely unknown thriller/horror film brought to you by Bob Clark (Black Christmas) & Alan Ormsby (Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things). It also marked Tom Savini's real movie debut, if you don't know who he is, watch Dawn of the Dead or From Dusk Till Dawn to catch up. The movie is about a soldier who returns home after the Vietnam war but left the boy they remembered in the trenches. Is Andy really the same person he use to be or something totally different? Deathdream has the most believable characters I've seen in any movie, this might be because his family reminds me so much of mine. His father, a man afraid to show the softer side of himself, strict, angry, and more attached to the family dog than his own son. His mother, a caring and defending woman even during all of the drama & madness that surrounds her. His sister, a concerned woman who tries her best to make Andy feel at home, but confused at the same time. If your local video store doesn't carry this film, order it now! It's a must have for all true horror fanatics. Deathdream is a depressing film, which is a rarity in horror.

4 out of 5 stars Crazed Vietnam Vet comes back to kill. .......2006-08-30

First , a few things to get out of the way, this is NOT a Zombie movie at all. I laughed at some of the reviews saying it's a zombie flick, It's not, it's more along the lines of a dramatic thriller mixed in with a supernatural twist (the undead part).

A typical vehicle of the 70's. The 70's and early 80's flicks took advantage of the attention of Vietnam to come up with these anti-war flicks (Soldiers coming home but never being the same, being either violent or suicidal and ultimately hurting themselves or others). Enter "Deathdream" which skims over into the crazed Vet coming home to kill phase.

Andy is allegedly killed in Vietnam. His family is devasted but Andy , however, is displaying psychotic, and violent tendecies as time goes on. He kills a truck driver, kills a dog, and then well I won't spoil.

A great acting job by Richard Backus as he shows us the detoriation of one kind man corrupted by war and violence into a crazed soldier. The performances all around are excellent but like I said, it's not a zombie movie. The only zombie twist is that the guy's dead but that can easily be put into the supernatural category. The ending is very predictable, but this is quite an entertaining descend into madness, and social. commentary by Bob Clark. I don't think he needed the zombie twist at all but perhaps thought it was necessary to sell the film. Speaking of which includes early makeup effects by Tom Savini.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Effective and chilling.......2006-07-04

I had read good reports about "Deathdream", but I didn't expect much from this film as the opening soldiers-in-action prologue passed into the credits, and then to a humble family meal, as the atmosphere was too reminiscent of countless low budget, mid 1970's movies that used to show up on TV all the time. But to my surprise the film turned out to be far more effective and well made than I expected.

The rather cheap wartime opening served to introduce that character of Andy, although it is not handled very well at all and the characters are hard to distinguish. Luckily it's not really necessary, as the first important scene is the one that follows, in which the family meal I mentioned above is interrupted by an army officer carrying a telegram...the house visitor that every parent dreads. This important scene is handled surprisingly well, as Andy's mother, father and sister react to the news that Andy won't be coming home again. Luckily, this effective scene is not a mere one off, but just the start of what turns out to be a gruesome and thought-provoking horror/drama. Soon after the tearful telegram scene, the family's grief turns to elation as to their surprise, Andy suddenly turns up in the middle of the night seemingly alive and well...but unfortunately, he's neither.

I think a lot of the power of the film comes from the fact that the acting is all so good. With no big star names, there is still no major weak link anywhere in the film, and everyone seems to behave naturally and believably. The script has been written remarkably realistically and all of the characters act and speak like real people, without having any silly horror movie conventions to wrangle with. In fact the whole screenplay reads like a dream, as the time between Andy's arrival and the suspicions of various people that something is wrong happen about as fast as would naturally be expected. Andy's very first night at home comes at the cost of the life of a truck driver who gives him a lift, and as soon as one of the first characters outside of the main family (the doctor) actually meets him, he immediately suspects that something is wrong and decides to go the police without any hesitation. This refreshing realism does not mean of course that Andy does not get to cause some serious havoc before the end of the movie, and the highlight of his brief rampage is the drive-in movie scene in which Andy's sudden fury and hideous appearance are genuinly shocking.

As I said, the film has a low budget feel which hampers it, but the performances of Andy's mother, father and sister are all very good, and really lift the film up a level. Even the smaller roles are good, right down to the bunch of kids that visit Andy in the family back yard, or the police officers and local doctor. A special mention should also go to the actress playing Andy's former girlfriend who's re-acquaintance with him is far from the happy event she must have dreamed of. Of course it is the performance of Richard Backus as Andy that has to carry the main weight, and he is extremely effective, as he is required to present a character who is subtly not quite right, but still believeable. He's also quite convincingly evil, and the scenes of him constantly rocking back and forth in that damned creaky chair made me wish someone would just punch him!

The story is based loosely on the age-old tale of "The Monkey's Paw", so you don't need reminding that there is no happy ending. A vague anti-war message seems to be in the background, but the general intention seems to be just to to portray the horror of what is happening to one very ordinary family. In this the film succeeds wonderfully. A genuine little gem, rewarding and memorable to watch.
