5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Beast.......2006-03-15

After watching this DVD for 10 minutes on my own, I ran to get my wife, and started over again. She says it is "perfect". Some of the manifestations were immediately recognizable by any PMS sufferer (and any who live with and/or love them) and are humorous as such, but it's much more than that. "The Curse" is a love story, a humorous horror flick, a chick flick (of sorts), and a story of true friendship. Few movies illustrate the depth of unconditional friendship and the development of unconditional love better. This is a great one!

I know it's not necessary, but I want a sequel. I fell in love with the characters, and I want more. At the very least, I'd like some more movies out of the talented writer, director, and producer - Jackie Garry.

Warning - If you're looking for typical Grade B horror, or a mega-budget stunning effects film, you won't find it here. This is a classy, funny, real, romance/friendship/horror flick.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Independent Black Comedy.......2004-05-25

Frida (Amy Laughlin) is a relatively normal girl who works and lives in New York, except she's only that. "Normal." Nothing about her really makes her stand out in a crowd, or particularly in New York's dating scene. When her friend and neighbor decides to give her a makeover, Frida ends up getting much more than she bargained for. While shopping for slinky lingerie, she gets bitten by another woman, and after that things change drastically for Frida. Her dates appear to be going better, until she wakes up in the morning to find herself covered in blood with no memory of how it got there. Frida blames her blackouts and the blood on PMS and her period. But when a severed arm shows up in her bed as well, can she continue to write these coincidences off as mere "women's troubles?" To complicate things, two detectives are hot on her trail, connecting her with each of the victims. One of them wants to persue her as a suspect while the other wants to date her himself. Will Frida's life ever be the same?

This movie is a great example of a well-made independent film, and black comedy. Don't be mistaken! In no way is this a horror film. Rather, this film pays homage to other great werewolf films of the past. In addition, "The Curse" is a hilarious satire that turns lycanthropy into a metaphor for menstruation (similar to "Ginger Snaps" in that respect).

Amy Laughlin does a great job of portraying the trials and tribulations one goes through when adjusting to a new and strange lifestyle. You will find yourself laughing hysterically as you watch her waking in pools of blood, getting rid of bodies and body parts, and trying to explain her situation to her somewhat skeptical best friend. The fact that this is a low budget film with no effects doesn't detract from the quality of the film in any way, shape, or form. Great films need not have huge budgets. The script and cinematography are spectacular, and while some of the minor characters can be irritating, the major roles are performed quite well.

The extras on the DVD are quite interesting, as they explain making an independent film on a low budget.

Overall a great value for those who can appreciate excellent movies that don't have million dollar budgets! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars you don't have to have PMS to love this film.......2003-11-17

i came across this film quite by accident. made in new york for some $30,000 with a 4 week shooting schedule, two years in slogging post production hell, then a distribution deal and a scheduled release date of october 2001 -- whoops, can't release a movie that takes place in new york in october of 2001, so it sits on a shelf for another two years and finally ...

since there was no for special effects or to blow on sets or costumes, this movie was forced to survive solely by the power of its script and acting performances and it succeeds. it succeeds in being funny, scary, and romantic all at the same time. bitten by a fellow patron at a manhattan lingere sale, our heroine, frida, (played capably by Amy Laughlin) finds that her PMS is getting worse and worse every month and that, in fact, she has become a PMS werewolf, changing into an animal and ripping dates to shreds every 28 days. can true love save her? how long does it take to get rid of a human arm in the garbage disposal? who is that devilishly handsome police officer?

the bonus features include two seperate audio tracks with general commentary and a second with tips on how to make an indy horror flick ("don't use SAG!", spend money on an audio director, hire a DP with his/her own equipment)

4 out of 5 stars Clever and Funny - Enjoy the break from Hollywood scripts.......2003-08-04

"The Curse" is a light-hearted, refreshing, over-the-top flick that challenges audiences to compare a woman's insatiable desires, animalistic tendencies, and self confidence brought on by the "monthly plague" with that of a were-wolf! Is it just Frida's period that makes her crazy or is she really killing off men in her alter ego as a female carnivore? You will roll on the ground laughing as she disposes body parts in the food grinder and dines on raw meat like it was a culinary delight! It is a must-see, reliable flick for a light saturday night viewing!

5 out of 5 stars Goth Girl's dream --- silent movie purist's nightmare.......2006-06-22

i didn't read the labeling when i picked up a copy in a store for a few bucks and popped it in my dvd player and instead of cheesy organ music... type o negative! i just about hit the floor squealing with joy.

what impressed me most is that the person who edited the soundtrack did a good job matching type o songs to what's happening in the movie.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2006-06-16

I'm not really sure why this DVD was made, I like Type O and still wish they were still around, and of course I am a huge vampire fan. This just seemed kind of silly. It was interesting and all but find it cheap before shelling out some good money.

4 out of 5 stars NOT a bad mixture!.......2006-01-27

First: it IS amazing this 1922 film exists at all! In '22 Bram Stoker's widow sued the film makers for plagurism... and WON! All negatives and known copies of "Nosferatu" were located and destroyed! Fortunately for us, a handfull of prints survived. Still, you can forget about a "complete" print, much less an original negative, ever surfacing. (In some prints the title cards do refear to the Vampire as "Dracula".)

Now- some "pureists" will object to a heavy metal soundtrack acompanying this silent classic. However, this is not the first time rock music has been used for a reissure of a silent film. In
1985 a "restored" version of Fritz Lang's "Metropolos" (1925) featured an 80s rock score (including Pat Benitar). And, for "Nosferatu", you CAN'T find more approprian music than Type O Negative. And, whoever edited this knew the right song (or song excerpt) for the right scene! (Too bad this project was completed before their "Life Is Killing Me" came out- there're a lot of songs on that CD that would fit here.) Other good bands for this would include Tristania, Tiamat, Moonspell, Tenebre and Bloody Mary.

5 out of 5 stars Nosferatu.......2005-09-26

For beening made in the 20's it was very interesting. Not scary like now Vampires. But all in all made good. Also loved the music.

1 out of 5 stars Interesting idea, bad execution.......2005-04-02

A rock soundtrack certainly could work with Nosferatu, and given the price I paid for this DVD I was willing to take a chance on it.

However, this is not a rock soundtrack--it is just rock music played over the film. Since this didn't seem like a bottom-rung cheapo release, I naively imagined that (1) the soundtrack would be instrumental, and (2) the music would have been composed to fit the film.

In fact, there are continuous vocals on the soundtrack and this is distracting in the extreme (it pretty much makes it unwatchable).

Further, I would guess that the music was not composed specifically for this version of the film, as the changes in tempo, key, and instrumentation seem to have absolutely no relationship to what is appearing on the screen. (If I'm wrong and this was originally written for the film, the band did a genuinely awful job).

1 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed.......2004-11-03

I bought this DVD because I was thrilled with Something Weird's double feature disc of "The Ghastly Ones" and "Seeds." Well, Video Kart is no Something Weird! I don't mind that the transfer looks like hell, because the original films looked like hell and that was part of their charm. What bothers me is the weird, incomprehensible post-production tinkering on the part of Video Kart to change the films. During a few sequences in "Bloodthirsty Butchers," there are some conspicuous, newly added slow-mo effects put into the film. It doesn't exactly ruin the movie, but why - when promoting "uncut" and "unadulterated" presentations of Andy Milligan's films - would someone decide, "Oh yeah, this sequence would look so much better if we goosed it up a bit with slo-mo effects." You know what? People get irritated when George Lucas musses up his OWN work. Granted, Andy Milligan isn't George Lucas, but I thought the point of releasing these old films on DVD was to preserve the integrity of the artist. If I had it to do over again, I'd save the money I spent on this disc and have my Something Weird video prints of "Bloodthirsty Butchers" and "Rats are Coming" transferred to DVD myself.

5 out of 5 stars Cut? Uncut? Who cares?.......2003-12-31

Andy Milligan fans rejoice! Here are two of the hack's (I mean director's) most notorious efforts in one double-bill package. If you're not already educated about Milligan, he was a filmmaker who in the 60s and 70s made a series of period horror films, none costing more that $10,000 to produce (according to a famous Andy quote), and none looking like they cost more than $5,000 to make. Milligan has often been referred to as the worst director of all the time, but you can decide after enduring the two features here. For the most part, Milligan worked out of Staten Island, New York, but some of his efforts--such as the two features here--were actually shot in merry old England. Andy not only directed the films, but photographed them, made the costumes, assembled the eccentric-seeming cast members, and just about everything else possible (many of the names in his films' credits were fabricated).

BLOODTHIRSTY BUTCHERS (1970) is Andy's retelling of the "Sweeney Todd" story which had already been filmed as SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET with Tod Slaughter in the 30s, and later became a popular Broadway musical. Here, Sweeney Todd (John Miranda) runs a barber shop (with black & white tiled floors) where he cuts men's' throats while shaving and steals there jewelry, sometimes lopping off a hand or a finger in the process. Body parts of the victims end up in meat pies and are sold to the locals at a bakery, while Sweeney cheats on his wife with nearly every slut in town.

Filled with talk, the dialog is exuberant and swift, so trying to assess these actors' performances seems pointless. Victorian England is represented by a few setpieces shot claustrophobically as to mask the modern-day hindrances and demonstrate Andy's "skill" with a hand-held camera. In between the talky bickering, sloppily edited gore is shown (some apparently cut before initial release), some of it goes by so fast, you'll be questioning what you just witnessed--a breast in a pie is hardly distinguishable on screen, so its legend surpasses it. All this shot on terrible film stock, with cartoonish stock music in constant loop, and the sounds of background automobiles upstaged by a person barking like a dog off screen.

1972's THE RATS ARE COMING! THE WEREWOLVES ARE HERE! has one of the greatest exploitation titles of all time, but it's still an Andy Milligan film. Originally filmed as "Curse of the Full Moon," legend has it that the "rats" of the title were added due to the box office success of WILLARD. The plot concerns the Mooneys, an English family suffering from some sort of genetic lycanthropy. The youngest daughter, Diana (Jackie Skarvellis) returns from medical school with her new husband (Ian Innes) only to have their marriage disapproved by the family. The clan includes the bed-ridden father (Douglas Phair, doing a very, very poor man's Vincent Price), the wacky middle sister (Milligan regular Hope Stansbury) who toys with man-eating rats and torments her locked up, idiotic animal brother who likes to toss chickens around the room.

Shot mostly in one mansion location, the film was passed with a PG-rating and is pretty tame for Milligan. Lots of strange characters talk a lot, incest and inbreeding is implied, cars are seen in the far background, electric wall switches are not obscured, and a poor real rat is mutilated, as is a rubber one. There's lots of harsh lighting that makes the whole affair very dark, and the ending werewolf fiasco (with the expected lousy make-up) is even more disappointing than the finale of WEREWOLVES ON WHEELS. Milligan himself is credited as playing an elderly gunsmith who turns a silver cross into bullets. The familiar stock music is in check as well.

Video Kart's DVD transfers promises that these poor-looking films can't look any better, and having seen these two on 35mm in theaters, I know that they never looked too impressive in the least. Milligan shot these on 16mm, using lots of "short ends" of film and live mic sound. The footage was later blown up to 35mm for theatrical presentations. Milligan fans know what to expect here, but for the rest of you, that means lots of grain, muted colors, terrible lighting, and hissy sound in what never borderlines on professional filmmaking. Imagine your old home movies blown up to be shown as a feature film, and you can picture what Milligan's work is like.

Each feature is presented on its own separate disc. The trailers included here are not actually the original theatrical trailers, but rather newly created ones specifically for these DVDs. There is also excerpts of an essay by a representative from Video Kart who talks about meeting the late Milligan, the late Lew Mishkin (the son of late Milligan producer/distributor William Mishkin), and why these films look the way they do. There are some Easter eggs included, all related to various Video Kart DVD releases. Recommended? Of course.

5 out of 5 stars Miligan on DVD.......2003-11-19

I absolutely loved the Video Kart releases of Andy Milligan's BLOODTHIRSTY BUTCHERS/THE RATS ARE COMING! THE WEREWOLVES ARE HERE! and the companion release MONSTROSITY/GRAVEROBBERS. It appears that since the first two are MPAA-Rated, they must have been the theatrical release versions. There is no question but that the technical quality is higher for these DVD releases (even though one reviewer said that "You can't polish a turd!") than it was for the old Midnight Video versions, which were apparently re-released by Something Wierd/Image, analog warts and all. On top of that, when you add the convenience of DVD chaptering, and the additional information, there really is no comparison. I can't wait for the other Miligans to come out.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of butchered versions.......2003-11-16

Both of these films must be from TV prints as all the gore and nudity has been amatuerishly edited out. Compare the films to the trailers and you'll see for yourself. My old bootleg video copies are superior in content and print quality. I paid $5.99 for this DVD and didn't think twice about throwing it in the trash. Beware.

5 out of 5 stars Fixing The Un-Fixable.......2003-11-04

Andy Milligan was the worst technical film maker ever. He shot with handheld 16mm, dark rooms, edited with dirty razor blades and old mylar to name a few. His final film release product was in worse condition than most films that have been stored away for decades.

How Video Kart made these films look exactly the way they did when they were released I may never know. They look so good that I really don't care. I just hope Video Kart keeps them coming! We need more legit DVD's of underground classics like these. Hopefully the days of VHS transfers to DVD are over now that Video Kart is here!

4 out of 5 stars Ridiculously Twisted Fun !.......2006-06-24

Simon Sprackling's "FUNNY MAN" is a horror/comedy like no other! If you took the movie "Leprechaun" mashed it together with the comedy style of "The Kids In The Hall" add a few buckets of chunky red stuff & then took some lysergic acid diethylamide the outcome would be something like this demented nightmare. This underrated freakshow defines the words cult classic & is a must have for anyone who enjoys the hell out of goofy horror films.

4 out of 5 stars No rest for the bloody wicked, eh?.......2006-05-31

I really had fun watching this film. It is a horror-comedy of a higher standard. The movie varies from hilarious to grotesque. The comedy in this movie is derived from the killer being way over the top. Most you see coming, but some catches you off guard. The plot is very rarely on track, and this movie is VERY confusing. However, it gets 4 stars, because the death scenes in this are BRILLIANT on the budget the movie had.
Cheeky comedy, mixed with horrific violence.
Overall, a good buy.

4 out of 5 stars An Amusing, Slightly Disturbing B Flick That's Sadly Overlooked.......2006-05-29

Basic Plot: A mysterious English man (Christopher Lee) loses his mansion-home in a poker game, passing on not only ownership to the young, naive winner (Benny Young), but something much worse along with it -- a homicidal demon-jester known as the Funny Man (Tim James) who infests the house!

The Funny Man turned out to be pretty much what I expected: A strange, low-budget British horror flick with lots of dark, silly comedy. I can't say it was a masterpiece, or even slightly thought-provoking, but it's definitely a fun way to pass an hour and a half. The humor is pretty over-the-top (which I happen to like), and the story is decently interesting and original. But for the most part, the only reason you should see this is for the scenes with Tim James as the whacky evil jester. It's his witty one-liners and eccentric antics that keep the pace flowing. And that's really all it is -- some guy in a surprisingly impressive suit killing off characters in comedic ways. If you're a fan of B movies, this is certainly not as low as you can go in quality. As a matter of fact, it's above most others of its kind. So go on. Have a nice, sinister laugh with the Funny Man!

5 out of 5 stars Weird little horror/comedy sort of thing............2006-03-11

This is a much overlooked film that has a man winning an old house in England in a poker game and finding out that there's something that comes with the house that he wasn't expecting. The man arrives at the house with his wife and kids (and his nose candy problem, which is played up later in the flick) and also his brother is busily bringing his furniture to him in a van, and picking up strange hitch hikers along the way, one of whom is Pauline Black, the lead singer for British Ska band The Selecter. She brings some hoodoo-voodoo knowledge with her and finds she's up against the real 'man of the house', a strange jester that has a low-key but sadistic way of going about things. Sadisticly funny, that is, as one by one the folks that are at the house are dispatched in strange ways. This is quite the weird little flick and well worth seeing if you like things odd. Christopher Lee plays the original owner of the house but he's not on screen for all that long, just long enough to pass the burden to others and be on his way back to the loony bin. A highly worthwhile film, not exactly sophisticated and suave but definitely a hoot.

Amazon.com essential video

As noted critic Pauline Kael observed, "... this first important film of the vampire genre has more spectral atmosphere, more ingenuity, and more imaginative ghoulish ghastliness than any of its successors." Some really good vampire movies have been made since Kael wrote those words, but German director F.W. Murnau's 1922 version remains a definitive adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Created when German silent films were at the forefront of visual technique and experimentation, Murnau's classic is remarkable for its creation of mood and setting, and for the unforgettably creepy performance of Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a.k.a. the blood-sucking predator Nosferatu. With his rodent-like features and long, bony-fingered hands, Schreck's vampire is an icon of screen horror, bringing pestilence and death to the town of Bremen in 1838. (These changes of story detail were made necessary when Murnau could not secure a copyright agreement with Stoker's estate.) Using negative film, double-exposures, and a variety of other in-camera special effects, Murnau created a vampire classic that still holds a powerful influence on the horror genre. (Werner Herzog's 1978 film Nosferatu the Vampyre is both a remake and a tribute, and Francis Coppola adopted many of Murnau's visual techniques for Bram Stoker's Dracula.) Seen today, Murnau's film is more of a fascinating curiosity, but its frightening images remain effectively eerie. --Jeff Shannon

For anyone interested in horror films, this is a must to add to your collection. The style has become the mold for countless generations of vampire movies, up to and including Bela Lugosi's version (His is the definitive modern version). The dark cinematography is enhanced by the otherworldly makeup. It's only after a few minutes that you realize that it is a silent movie, and you really don't care. A later remake with Klaus Kinski was made, but it hardly comes close, although it gets kudos for its homage to the original by keeping it as close to the original plot, with filler scenes added to make up for the short movie length. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Nosferatu.......2007-06-18

Still the eeriest and most atmospheric of all the Dracula films, Murnau's "Nosferatu" gave the German director an opportunity to explore experimental visual techniques--like stop-motion and negative exposures--in bringing Bram Stoker's version of the legend to the big screen. But his biggest coup was in casting the mysterious Max Schreck (rumored to be another actor's alias) in the title role. With his rat-like features, ghastly pointed ears, and long, talon-like fingers, Schreck doesn't seem at all like a creature from our planet. Murnau completed the effect by filming on location in Eastern Europe. The result is a Gothic chiller you simply can't miss.

4 out of 5 stars creepy and creepy.......2007-06-08

a little long for me but good to have for nostalga's sake. very creepy at times. a classic.

4 out of 5 stars Different soundtracks make big diffeence........2007-06-08

"Disgruntled" refers to a previous review and not Nosferatu.

There are a number of different "versions" of this movie distributed by different companies. I bought the Keno version, and the transfer and tint quality are excellent. However, I had previously seen the movie with a pipe organ arrangement and was dissapointed with the orchestral arrangements on the Keno DVD. Not that there is anything bad with the music, it's just that the pipe organ creates a creepier mood for me. I then bought the Image companies offering and am very pleased with the pipe organ soundtrack, though the DVD transfer is not quite as good as the Keno. I would have given 5 stars if the Keno video and the Image audio were on the same DVD. Oh, and the audio commentary is admirable in ponting out the symbolism and stlye of the film. great movie.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good overall. .......2007-05-12

For a film released in 1922, the archivists in Italy did a very good job in their judicious splicing together of the few existing prints of this film (which are of varying quality) to produce the best possible transfer that we shall probably ever see. However, both musical accompaniments have their weak points. Still, I would recommend this film to any silent film fan or discerning fans of films based (or in this case "inspired") by DRACULA.

4 out of 5 stars Good Fun Movie - Great Carny Feel.......2004-07-30

While some of the sequences in this film are lacking in production values, it's great to see a horror film based on the carny lot. As being an ex-worker of a sideshow myself, the things Gunnar Hansen says in the film are very true to form. It's a fun story and a decent flick. I personally LOVE the low budget horror films and this one rates very high in my book! Give it a try. You won't be dissapointed.

2 out of 5 stars Those Wacky Carny Freak Shows!.......2002-10-05

"Freakshow" is an extremely low budget film that I believe was actually shot on video. It is set in the style of the old Amicus Studios anthology horror shows like "Tales From the Crypt" in that it presents four short films with a wraparound story. The main issue then is if each individual story is any good. Sadly, "Freakshow" is very uneven in this regard. The majority of the stories are unlikely to provide any scares or shocks and the acting is what could be expected from a film with no budget. I did enjoy parts of the film as the subjects dealt with are truly disturbing and some of the "gore" effects are good. The main problem with "Freakshow" is that it offers nothing that we have not seen countless other times and it presents what it has with no flair or imagination. It was nice to see Gunnar Hansen from TCM fame in the film but his role is small and demonstrates why Leatherface had no speaking lines. The DVD is very pedestrian in its presentation, looking as if it is a direct master from a VHS copy. The extras are not worth mentioning unless one considers "DVD Credits" and "Chapter Stops" as bonus features. That said, if you can find this DVD for under ... dollars, as I did, buy it as a second feature for your DVD horror night.

4 out of 5 stars Apparently it's a Dog's World ("More" or Less).......2004-01-28

"Mondo Cane" ("It's a Dog's World") might not have been the first shockumentary, but this 1962 film is the first such film to get a wide viewing. I cannot believe they actually showed this to us in high school (WHAT were they thinking?). Then again, I have to admit I have never forgotten the sight of a guy with a sword cutting off a bull's head with one swing or the bugs prepared for dinner.

The film offers an initial disclaimer that says, in part, "the duty of the chronicler is not to sweeten the truth but to report it objectively". Of course, this is the justification for this fascinating and repulsive look at outrageous things around the world. Writer and co-director Gualtiero Jacopetti travels back and forth around the world between the so-called civilized and primitive worlds, creating all sorts of ironic frames of meaning (aided and abetted by thinly veiled sarcastic narration). In Rome chicks are dye bright colors for Easter eggs while a tribe out in the jungles waits five years to slaughter a hundred pigs and have a big feast. Of course, there are better examples, but it seems kind of pointless to spoil the fun by telling you the best shocks in a film that was considered the "most argued about film" on earth when it was first released in 1963.

This 107-minute Italian film is in French, with English subtitles, and was helped with its legitimacy by the fact its theme song "More" was nominated for an Oscar. On the one hand it is relatively tame given what we see in movies today, but then it does have the virtue of being documentary fact rather than special effects fiction. Still, I have to believe that "Mondo Cane" will be of more interest to those on whom it made an impression way back when, rather than winning new generations of viewers. But remember, sooner or later, this film will make you drop your jaw at something. You were warned.
