Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Made an excellent gift for a horror buff.......2007-06-15

I bought this for my friend for Christmas who loves the older, pre 80s era special effects movies and TV shows. This was a little before his time, to say the least, but it was a great way of seeing where we've been and how far we've come.

I'd seen only bits and pieces of these movies over the years in late night movie marathons and cable, it was one of the first opportunities I had to see the entire movie from beginning to end. These movies are funny in so many ways, as in the silent movie era a lot of these actors were made up to look cartoonish rather than scary. I'd read that for movie make up Lon Chaney Sr. (and Jr.) didn't even use make up or prothetics but taped their faces and used hooks to change their appearence. There never was a "How To" instruction book on things, they had to learn by doing.

The only bit of criticism for this is that it's quite long. Don't think that you can watch an entire disc in one sitting. A little of these movies go a long way.

3 out of 5 stars Old Horror.......2007-06-07

This is a fine, cheap package of movies if you like the old Black and White horror movies. Most are seemingly low budgetted movies, such as "Attack of the Killer Shrews" where dogs are dressed up in ratty costumes and puppets are used for close ups. I for one enjoy these types of movies.

4 out of 5 stars For the true Horror afficionado.......2007-06-02

I'm a professional writer of supernatural thrillers. My Book of Common Dread reinvented the vampire, and my The Bell Witch/An American Haunting became the movie An American Haunting with Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek. Not only does my work demand knowledge of what's out there in print and on film, but I was also born just early enough to have caught a number of the films in this collection when they first came out. In most genres, a collection of works of such low acting and production value quality would be a waste of money. But we all know most so-called horror movies are second-rate Hollywood citizens right from the get-go. How many have won Academy Awards? Some of these are fun because they're so bad. Others are interesting because they have famous directors getting their start somewhere, mystery and horror writers of skill penning the dialogue, or actors who will later become famous. An occasional diamond is found among the zirconia here, but the real reason to purchase this collection is that it is incredibly inexpensive for what you get, and you can devour the cinema equivalent of nutritionless calories (like movie popcorn) for many nights of enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars Cult movies , bad quality.......2007-05-30

All 50 movies are cult classics but the only thing bad is the sound quality, sometimes you just cant understand what the characters are talking about they should at least put subtitels, but thats not a big problem because the movies are fantastic.
It realy pays to have this movie pack!

4 out of 5 stars 50 Classic Horror Films for a Good Price.......2007-05-14

This is a nice package to own for a great price. The quality is good on most of the films. Some of the movies in this package are really good and enjoyable, and there are some that is not worth seeing a second time unless you like it. But like many others have stated this is a good bargin for this amount of movies.

I found out that there is a 100 Horror Movie Pack, and it includes most of the movies from this pack and others. Maybe that will be a good start for some of you who don't own any of the sets yet. So if you like classic horror, then you will love this 50 Movie package.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix of B Movies!.......2007-06-28

Have a slow Saturday afternoon? Pop in one of these DVD's and go back to your childhood. This is a great collection (for a great price)of old movies that you would probably never see on TV. Some are better than others, and some are not worth much, but all-in-all, I find watching these to be relaxing and fun. And isn't that what it's all about anyway?

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for the money.......2007-06-08

While this pack isn't worthy of a 5 star rating, it's still a good value. Some of these titles I had purchased earlier at a cost of $5.00 a piece. The quality is not great, but they're watchable.

3 out of 5 stars From or To.......2007-05-15

Clearly escape, but as Isaac Asimov said, 'There is escape from and escape to'.
These mostly awkward speculations do take you imaginative places. What more could you ask?

5 out of 5 stars 50 Flicks of Public Domain Goodness.......2007-04-27

SciFi Classics is a collection of 50 movies that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $21.99 for my set and that comes down to about 44 cents per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.

Anyways, here is how I rate the movies in SciFi Classics:

Good:

The Amazing Transparent Man
Assignment: Outer Space
Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon
Hercules Unchained
Killers From Space
Laser Mission
Lost Jungle
Phantom From Space
The Phantom Planet
Planet Outlaws
Queen of the Amazons
The Wasp Woman
Zontar, the Thing From Venus

Average:

Colossus and the Amazon Queen
First Spaceship On Venus
Horrors of Spider Island
Robot Monster
She Gods of Shark Reef
They Came From Beyond Space
Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet
Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women
Warning From Space
White Pongo

Bad:

The Astral Factor
Attack of the Monsters
The Atomic Brain
Battle of the Worlds
Blood Tide
The Brain Machine
Bride of the Gorilla
Cosmos: War of the Planets
Crash of the Moons
Destroy All Planets
Devil of the Desert vs. the Son of Hercules
Eegah
The Galaxy Invader
Gammera, the Invincible
Hercules Against The Moonmen
Hercules and the Captive Women
The Incredible Petrified World
King of Kong Island
Menace From Outer Space
Mesa of Lost Women
Prehistoric Women
Santa Claus Conquers The Martians
The Snow Creature
Son of Hercules
Teenagers From Outer Space
Unknown World
The Wild Women of Wongo

All in all, an incredible bargain.

2 out of 5 stars On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 3.2.......2007-03-31

SCI-FI CLASSICS COLLECTION is an eclectic mix of hokey science fiction and fantasy, with a sprinkling of action films (of the sandals and swords variety). One commonality here is the typically low score all fifty of these "classics" got from users of a film-related website. On a one to ten scale, the current average for this set calculates out to: 3.2.

Scoring is relevant only to plot, editing, effects, etc, and doesn't consider stock condition or audio/video transfer quality. This multi-pack may only be for the most ardent of sci-fi/fantasy fans, as well as lovers of well-aged cheese.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For the Price Well Worth It.......2007-05-21

With shipping I paid approxamately $20 for 50 movies. It works out to about .40 cent each. I have not seen all of them but enjoyed the ones I have. A inexpensive way to spend a evening. If you were Elvira Fans, they can be used to through an Elvira get together. Pick 2 selections have your your invited friends bring the chips, popcorn, whatever and you have a party.

4 out of 5 stars Forget the other titles, watch this one........2007-05-19

Once again I don't normally watch this kind of movie--not serious enough.
But it has its moments funny and chuckles. Earth has been invaded by a galaxtic fast food chain and we are the food.

1. Neat idea.
2. Interesting storyline.
3. Interesting characters. Example: the aliens chase this one guy in to a shed. He closes the door. There are five aliens. The four aliens pick up the odd one and use him for a battering ram. It's somewhat funny, certaintly original as far as I know, and bloody. R rated, not family but worth a look.
4. Sometimes interesting special effects. Somebody at least took a shot at trying to be original.
5. Lots of gun fire...they look like full-loads from where I'm setting.

Hmmm, yes, I'm going to have to recommend this to the somewhat jaded popcorn group. Those of us who like our old movies this isn't going to be such a treat--myself included. Nevertheless, it is interesting enough to keep your attention throughout the movie and therefore it gets my recommendation. Bye!

4 out of 5 stars This set may not be 'great', but it is good........2007-05-13

I own several 50 movie sets, and this one is pretty much standard. Most movies are fairly 'rough', but, that's how I remember them on the old B&W TV's. I am an old horror movie buff, so, I can find enough 'good movies' on this to make it well worth the price.

3 out of 5 stars WARNING!! Beware of 2 different versions.......2007-05-09

I purchasing this set with the intent of watching Deadtime Stories since I remember it as a kid. I noticed when I got the set in the mail that it was not on the set. I Looked at the picture provided from Amazon and it shows Deadtime Stories on the bottom right however mine shows Horror Express in it's place. I have also noticed that the "50 MOVIE PACK" red box is located on the left as here is shows it on the right. So there are two versions of this set. So for people looking for the Deadtime Stories version make sure it says it on the bottom like the picture Amazon has, but if you order it from Amazon you won't get it. Sucks big time, oh well.

3 out of 5 stars On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 4.2.......2007-04-14

To all fans of blood-by-the-bucket cinema, monsters, ghouls and gore:

The averaged-out rating for this box set was determined from data gathered at a film-intensive website. User polling numbers (on a 1 to 10 scale) rate CHILLING CLASSICS at: 4.2.

The alphabetized program list below includes individual poll scores, original theatrical titles (where indicated), country of origin (if other than USA), years of release and prominent actors for each film.

Long before teams of technicians used computers to bring monsters and superheroes to the screen, one man equipped with little more than a makeup kit and a remarkable acting talent dazzled moviegoers with his ability to transform himself into all manner of men, monsters and outcasts. That man was Lon Chaney. This 2-Disc Chaney celebration includes three of his major works. The Ace of Hearts, - a tale of murderous intrigue, Laugh, Clown, Laugh - Chaney as a love-smitten circus clown, and The Unknown - where Chaney is a armless knife thrower. These are in their most complete surviving versions. Narrated by Kenneth Branagh, Turner Classic Movies' compelling documentary Lon Chaney: A Thousand Faces explores Chaney's diverse career and very private personal life. They are a few of this genius's thousand faces - faces that continue to amaze and entertain

4 out of 5 stars Great value set for the enthusiast.......2007-06-12

TCM have produced a great set of rare Lon Chaney silent films which will appeal to the Chaney fan and anyone interested in the history of the American film. The set consists of 3 films which were "lost" for many years, so it is great they are now available to view.

Michael Blake is the author of 3 books on Chaney and provides detailed commentaries on each film. Blake has clearly devoted his life to Chaney's legacy and his commentaries go way beyond what is seen on the screen. Accordingly, they are very interesting but possibly jaundiced about the films' appeal 80 years later.

The earliest film, from 1921, is "Ace of Hearts" a static and melodramatic story of a vigilante group who draw cards to select who will commit murder. The print is fairly poor and the film suffers from a snail pace and overacting.

The second film is "The Unknown", released in 1927. The film, we are told, is possibly the best of the partnership of the director Tod Browning with Chaney. The story is bizarre, the powerful story of a circus performer who cuts off his arms to win the girl. Joan Crawford, in a very early role, plays the object of Chaney's love. The film follows the common theme of unrequited love which appeared in many of Chaney's films. As well as observing Chaney's art, the film has excellent photography and Crawford is very different to the pretentious star she became, suggesting more talent than she subsequently showed. She also displays a rawness which is probably much closer to who she was before she became THE Joan Crawford.

The final film is "Laugh Clown Laugh", apparantly Chaney's own favourite of all his films. Once again, the film's theme is unrequited love with Chaney as a clown who makes the public laugh while he is heartbroken inside. This time, the object of his affection is the virginal and teenage Loretta Young and she displays the purity of emotion which was in all of her best performances pre 1935 long before the artificial later Loretta.

There is also a reconstruction of an early version of the vampyr legend, 'London after Midnight". This is a highly desired lost film but on the evidence of a few interviewees who saw the original film, the script and the stills, it looks like it might have been extremely melodramatic. While the reconstruction has been done lovingly, the result is static and rather boring, which is to be expected, I suppose.

Both "Laugh Clown Laugh" and "The Unknown" are missing scenes but what remains preserves Chaney at the height of his powers. They demonstrate that, in fact, his reputation as a horror star is misleading. He was a character actor who changed his appearance to suit the role in the same way as Charles Laughton and Paul Muni did much later. His talent for pathos is outstanding.

Possibly the best features of the DVD set are the marvellous documentary about Chaney and the short films about the competitions which TCM ran to locate new scores for the films. The DVD set is excellent value.

5 out of 5 stars When Will We See The Second Chaney Collection?.......2007-02-11

I bought this set right away in October 2003. It has been over three years since this set was released. It includes great performances by Lon Chaney Sr. WHEN are we going to get a second collection? I personally would love to see "The Unholy Three," both the 1925 silent version and the 1930 talkie version released as part of a second collection, and also "West of Zanzibar," and maybe "The Road To Mandalay." This great performer deserves another release of his best and I for one will show up for my DVD collection the day it is released!

5 out of 5 stars When was Lon NOT great?.......2006-09-25

Contained in this wonderful collection are the films 'The Ace of Hearts' (1921), 'The Unknown' (1927), and 'Laugh, Clown, Laugh' (1928), together with an awesome documentary about Lon's life and career (with ample film clips), a 40-minute stills and intertitle recreation of 'London After Midnight' (1927), audio commentaries by Michael Blake, Lon Chaney's definitive biographer, photo galleries, introductions to the films by TCM host Robert Osbourne, and a featurette on the composers who have won TCM's now-annual Young Film Composers contest. Two of those silents that were selected to have new scores written for them by the winners were 'The Ace of Hearts' and 'Laugh, Clown, Laugh.'

'The Ace of Hearts' was the first of Lon's films I ever saw, and even though it's not really the height of greatness, it did make me into a big fan. The origins and purpose of this secret society which Lon belongs to are never really explained (we just have a vague idea of their purpose), and the plot was also a bit of a mystery. However, as curious and under-par though this film might be, Lon totally steals the show. He just *looked* like an actor, and lived up to all of the great things I'd heard about what a wonderful actor he was. I was really impressed by his body language and facial expressions, and how he just inspired such sympathy in the audience, wanting him to be the one to get the girl (the beautiful Leatrice Joy) and to have a happy ending.

'The Unknown' is bizarre, to say the least. It was directed by Tod Browning, his favorite director, who did a lot of macabre disturbing unconventional pictures like this. It also seems as though there's some footage missing from this one, at only about 50 minutes long, added to the fact that it was only available in murky 9.5 mm black market copies until 1968, when it was discovered, along with some other films, in France, in cans labeled "l'inconnu" (i.e., "unknown"). What remains is really good, however. Alonzo is a supposedly armless knife thrower in love with his beautiful assistant Nanon (Joan Crawford), who is afraid and distrustful of men with arms. We're never really told just why she's so afraid of a man who could put his arms around her, but one suspects that she was raped or abused in the past. However, as we come to find out, Alonzo does have his arms, only he's hiding them so that Nanon will love and trust him. He's also hiding them because he has double thumbs, and the police are looking for him for some crimes he's committed, knowing only that it was a man with the same condition. Things take a turn for the worst when Nanon sees him from the back strangling her father (though luckily she doesn't see his face), and the life-altering decision Alonzo makes is not only incredibly disturbing, unthinkable, and creepy, but also leaves the door open for the handsome strong man in their travelling circus, Malabar (Norman Kerry), to move in on Nanon, who has always pushed away his romantic overtures. When Alonzo comes back to the circus after taking care of his bizarre business, things get even creepier. Once again Lon makes you feel sympathy for this strange character, someone you'd ordinarily feel repulsed and horrified by.

'Laugh, Clown, Laugh' is a truly touching and heartbreaking film, and came out in the last really great year for silents, by which time the artform had truly reached its peak and been beautifully perfected. It is rather disturbing how Lon's character, Tito the clown, develops romantic feelings for Simonetta (Loretta Young) when she becomes a young woman, even though he and his partner Simon have been raising her as practically their own daughter since they found her abandoned when she was just a toddler, but you get the feeling that deep down he realises how wrong and foolish these feelings are, not only because she's like a daughter to him, but also because he's an older man, and doesn't have anything to promise her the way her much younger and more handsome suitor Count Luigi (Nils Asther) does. A famous story about the filming of this movie is that the director, Herbert Brenon, was often quite rude and mean to Loretta Young, who was just a teenager at the time and barely starting her career. However, he was always civil to her whenever Lon was around, and after he picked up on this, he was with her constantly, even when they were shooting scenes he didn't appear in, guiding, directing, and mentoring her, and protecting her from the abusive director.

The stills recreation of 'London After Midnight' is alright, but doesn't really deliver a big punch due to the lack of actual film footage that might speed the story along better or make it seem more compelling and interesting. If only there had been even some surviving footage to pad out the stills with, as in the recreations of 'The Young Rajah' and the four-hour version of 'Greed.' This film has long been among the holy grail of missing silents, ever since the last known surviving print was destroyed by a vault fire at MGM in 1967. However, people who saw it in its original run and even as "recently" as the Fifties or Sixties have usually been quoted as saying that it wasn't all that great, and that the people so desperate to find it would probably feel the same way if they had had a chance to see it. Perhaps this is a classic case of something being elevated to high status due to the reputations of Chaney and Browning and the fact that it's lost and no longer able to be judged on its true merits. As sad as it is that an overwhelming amount of silents were lost, both within their own lifetimes and in the ensuing decades, not all lost films were great works of art that modern-day people would be really impressed by and enamoured of. Just like with modern-day movies, most silents too were just fun lightweight date movies or something for a rainy day, not epic timeless classic masterpieces or movies that are so good you want to watch them over and over again.

Overall, this is a great collection. Lon was great in every film he was in, even lacklustre efforts. His mere presence could elevate something that would have appeared only ordinary or even bad had some other actor been in it. His growing up with Deaf-mute parents played a big part in how he was so skilled at pantomimic acting, in making the viewer feel sympathy and empathy with characters whom they ordinarily would have walked on by or spat on in disgust or fear, and the stories about how he had keen empathy in real life for people who were different are also legendary. This small sampling of films is compelling proof of just why he was one of the 20th century's greatest male film actors.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Great Acting.......2005-03-25

Let me just go on record of saying that the closest equivalent to Lon Chaney that we have working today is Robert DeNiro. Think about it - Chaney went to extraordinary lengths to achieve authenticity (60 pound hump on his back to play Quasimodo, wires to pull his face back in the Phantom's death's-head grin, DeNiro gains weight for Raging Bull, etc), Chaney had a tough, strong, solid physical presence that lends his every appearance a weight and reality that most other actors lack, he often played the darker side of human nature but did so with sensivity, realism, and pathos, and Chaney was a hard working professional, a non-nonsense person who was dedicated to his craft. I've associated Chaneyt and DeNiro in my head for a long time now and have never read or heard that comparrison, so I figured I would hereby make a public positing of that comparrison. By the way, these films are great, essential silent movies that any true film buff MUST see.

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT !!!!.......2005-03-18

Are you wondering if this disk is worth $40? So was I. This collection is GREAT. You get two disks. There are three actual movies, one biography and one very special treat. Thios makes a total of five features for a mere $40. The lost film London After Midnight was a high-grossing popular film of the silent era. There are no known copies of the actual film itslef. BUT this collection contains a reconstruction of the film made from still photos. It's a slideshow with occasional title cards. All in all, if you like Lon Chaney, get this set. All of the films are clean, and very very very clear.

Witchcraft through the ages is explored with dark wit in this silent classic. Writer-director Benjamin Christensen uses a historical study of witchcraft as a jumping-off point for a fascinating film that is part science, part horror, and part social commentary. This Criterion edition uses a beautiful print, a rearrangement of music from the original Danish premiere, and the original Swedish intertitles (with subtitles). Goodies include commentary by Danish film scholar Casper Tybjerg, the option of watching a narrated version without intertitles, and test shots from the film. The test shots, in particular, give insight into the early filmmaking process, as when Christensen uses his own image to try out (and reject) a flying effect. This is a worthy edition to the collection of fans of horror films, silent films, and film in general. --Ali Davis

Description

Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen's legendary film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the middle ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious-instead it's a witches' brew of the scary, gross, and darkly humorous. The Criterion Collection is proud to present two versions of this genre-defying "documentary," for the first time ever on DVD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-02-16

I received the DVD within a week's time. Perfect condition, as stated, and plays perfectly. Most grateful.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting film. The first two thirds better than the last.......2006-11-08

A very provocative look at the lore of witchcraft in Central Europe in the Middle Ages, and how many lives were destroyed by the Church. I enjoyed the documentary material which set up the narrative part of the film. The only part I found fault with was the end, where Christensen turns didactic, explaining how the witch hunters are still with us, persecuting victims of hysterical illness. But even in the last part there were some affecting moments.

I loved all the fantasy vignettes depicting the "witches'" false confessions of Black Sabbaths in the forest, and the horrific backlash of the Church. I can see why Benjamin Christensen was invited to the United States, and why Warner Brothers set him to work on old dark house comedy-horror projects. They were trying to repeat the success Universal had with German Director Paul Leni directing THE CAT AND THE CANARY.

I do love silent horror films from Europe (particularly Germany), and wish that Kino and Image, or Criterion would release more of them. I would particularly like to see restored versions of THE STUDENT OF PRAGUE and THE HANDS OF ORLAC, both starring Conrad Veidt. The version of THE STUDENT OF PRAGUE that's currently available is a poor copy of a 16 mm print, and deseves a better release.

5 out of 5 stars A silent era milestone given the Criterion treatment.......2006-06-06

This film was mentioned briefly in the acclaimed CINEMA EUROPE: THE OTHE RHOLLYWOOD. Captivated by its imagery, I sought this film and found it under the pretigious Criterion banner. Wow!

The picture complete with color tints is amazing!

An enthralling musical soundtrack with some of classical music's finets pieces!

A terrific and informative commentary with Swedish film professor, Casper Tybjerg.!

An introduction by the director from the 40's!

An extensive biblography!

The 1968 jazzy version eclipsed in Hollywood pandering only by the Sid Shienberg cut of BRAZIL!

This is essential viewing for film students, filmmakers, and silent buffs!

2 out of 5 stars Our Stupid Ancestors..........2005-03-09

(Or, Why Hysterical Woman Are The Root Of All The Problems In The World).

I was bitterly disappointed by this film. A supposedly famous Scandinavian masterwork, I found "Haxan" ("heck-sen") to be confused and... well, rather boring.

The main problem with the film is that it doesn't know what it wants to be. A documentary? A drama? Furthermore, it holds the view that people who lived in the past were rather stupid and easily led, and that we 20th century people are somehow much cleverer than they were. This is a rather dubious assertion, as it is doubtful that the human race would have been able to continue itself if it had somehow managed to be any more dumb than many people are nowadays.

Even worse, it holds to the outmoded 19th century idea that hystrical women are a serious treat to the wellbeing of the world -a laughably outmoded premise for a comedy, let alone a supposedly serious film.

Plus, the usually immaculate Criterion transfer isn't in evidence here: the images look pixelly. Best avoid, and instead buy some of the German films from the 1920s, like Murnau's "Nosferatu" (1921) or his "Faust" (1925).

5 out of 5 stars Haxan is Great!!.......2004-09-26

This movie, in my opinion, is one of my favorite depictions of witchcraft and its history, mythology, horror, and customs. The movie is directed beautifully and hauntingly at the same time. Some of the images will stick with you forever. Benjamin Christensen's portrayal as the devil is frightning, yet somewhat humorous. This film definantely deserves a place in the top 100 greatest movies of all time. Enjoy!

I enjoy camp and excess as much as the next person, unless the next person had anything to do with this release. This is mearly an excuse for the Troma team, which has made some entertaining movies, to be social critics and show some naked women on tv. Very poorly done, don't waste your time.

4 out of 5 stars I wish this was on TV.......2002-06-29

Troma's edge Tv was a series created by the modern geniuses down there at Troma studio for UK television. I had never heard of the show before a friend, from the UK, brought this DVD over one day.

The DVD has a few episodes including the 'too hot' sex episode as well as epsidoes dealing with other important issues like drugs, war and horror in a typical Troma way. They are all totally hilarious and often make truely serious points mixed in with all the fun.

The hosts on the show include Tiffany Shepis as super Tromette Bullemia, Trent Haaga who contains in himself the personality and energy of more than a dozen game show hosts and Debbie Rochon who is unbelievably funny and sexy at the same time in the horror episode. It has to seen to be believed she's so cool. But even with this talented cast of hosts, I still dig Lloyd Kaufman's bits the most, that guy is so damn funny.

After seeing this DVD I feel tottally cheated that it never came onto TV here. But at least we can see some of this great show on the DVD. And as usual there is countless extra's included.

one of the comments below states that this disk contains the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.. which was the main reason why i bought it.. note that it DOES NOT! the other Murneau films are worth the buy, but it would have been great to have Cabinet too.

(...) Unfortunately, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is not included in this disk. Nosferatu, The Last Laugh, and Der Golem are packaged together from Triton Media. Bummer, huh?

4 out of 5 stars Five Stars for the Movies; Three for the DVD.......2001-02-24

Even in the early days of cinema, Hollywood provided fluff. The Germans began to really experiment in the 1920s and were considered the real artists as well as the main rival to the studios. The three films on the German Silent Masterworks--The Golem, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Nosferatu--represent this great experimentation and high art that Germany had to offer; I only wish that the compilers had provided more features to complement the great works.

Der Golem (The Golem, directed by Robert Wiene, is the earliest example still in existence of a full length horror film. It is also the earliest surviving example of German Expressionism. The film is considered to be a forerunner of the classic image of Frankenstein. The moody atmosphere would influence the other tow films as well as movies to our present day. The grittiness of ancient Prague has never been captured as well. It is through this early film that we can understand and appreciate the horror genre more fully while still being entertained.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is fascinating. There is no other word to describe the mood, set, or storyline. This is when film took on a new life. We could actually see a new world. German Expressionism fully flowers in this shocker about a mad scientist and his helper who appears to be in a coma. This, like the other two, not only is important to watch for film history; it still packs a punch!

Nosferatu is the third and best known film in the collection. It is the first Dracula film as well as one of the great F. W. Murnaus' films. This vampire is not the suave Dracula of later films of even the book, yet a frightening bloodcuker with oddly elongated limbs and teeth. There is a forboding air throughout the film that doesn't lift until the very end. Don't watch this one without a light on!

Now, I have to tell you that these films are necessary for any film or buff. The question is: Is this the right format? The set does come with a useful booklet and some stills; however, where is the additional commentary? Books upon books have been written on these three films, yet not even one film historian could provide an audio track for one of the movies? I think that's a shame which is why I give the DVD itself three stars.

So, if you want to splurge and try to get all three films separately, that would probably be the best thing. If you're a film addict as myself and want to own three of the best early German flicks without spending a fortune--look no further.

1 out of 5 stars a.m.c. monsterfest should be ashamed of themselfs for this junk.......2006-04-26

i was given this as a present, and though that with the a.m.c. movie channel name the transfers would be at least ok,no such luck. these are the worst transfers i have ever seen. stay away from these, you can find all these movies in other collections, and they look much better. sahme on you a.m.c.

3 out of 5 stars Could of been better.......2004-10-28

I will not go into reviewing the content of the movies themselves, but rather the quality of the DVD.

AMC Monsterfest is a known name, so I expected a little better quality.
The video looks OK. It is definitely watchable, but I have seen clearer transfers.

The audio in White Zombie fluctuates a little in volume.

The audio in the Ape Man is a bit muffled.

The devil Bat is the best transfer on here-both visual and audio.
The last 7 minutes or so of the Human Monster has no audio. It just cuts out, and does not come back. I have not seen any other version of this movie, so I am not sure if this is normal because of the age and condition of the film.
That is the major complaint with this DVD.
The creepy music on the menu screens is very cool.
For less than $10, it is probably worth it.

There are so many Bela Lugosi collections to choose from, you just don't know which are the better ones to get. How many times are you willing to buy the same movies to find out?

3 out of 5 stars Rating for the set, not the wonderful films.......2007-04-17

This set contains the original versions of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1919), "The Golem" (1920), "Nosferatu" (1922) and "The Phantom of the Opera" (1924, starring Lon Chaney.) I'm actually surprised by the price here, I was able to pick this up at Costco for under $10. The set is actually nice package-wise, it opens up like a book with 2 discs on each side, in a sturdy wooden shell.

If you're familiar with Alpha or any other cheapie companies that work with public domain titles, you'll know what you're getting. No restoration work, and no attempt at any extras- heck even the menus are plain and ugly! (You get the choices of either "play" or "index", wow!) If you can find this cheap, it's worthwhile just to get a chance to check out these astounding, influential early movies and see if you want to invest in the nicer versions. I'm glad I have them in my collection, but they are nowhere near complete. Since the films are so old you know the image will have a lot of problems, but they are all very watchable.

    3 out of 5 stars 4 classics.......2007-01-08

I've yet to watch all four in this set, but I have seen all four of these movies, and they are all very good. They stand the test of time well.

I have watched "Nosferatu" in this set, and I think the set should have noted that the title cards have been changed to reflect the character names and storyline of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" more closely. As I recall from previous viewings, the title character in the original version was called "Count Orlock (or something like that), and in this version he is called "Count Dracula". Other characters and situations have similarly been renamed.
