When graphic novelist Aiden (Hugh Dancy) travels to Bucharest to research the loup garou legend, he nearly gets devoured in the latest female werewolf film, Blood and Chocolate. In the tradition of Werewolf Woman and Ginger Snaps, Blood and Chocolate stars Vivian Gandillon (Agnes Bruckner), a girl who's forced to face her lupine tendencies in order to discover how capable of loving Aiden she really is. Based on a book by Annette Curtis Clause, the film chronicles the lives of the remaining loup garou who are an extended Romanian family waiting for their pack leader, Gabriel, to select his new mate. His desire for Vivian means trouble when her wish to be with Aiden results in her revealing too much about the clan's secretive lifestyle. In this film, werewolves look fully human until their eyes glow with colored contact lenses while they fly through the air to then land as full-fledged wolves. Gone are the days, apparently, of films showing the transformation in all its hairy, explosive detail. A lack of scenes describing the werewolf metamorphosis make this film more a love story than a monster tale, though two forest gatherings in which the loup garou hunt human sacrifices offer some grizzly satisfaction. Unlike the aforementioned femme werewolf films, Blood and Chocolate features a girl fighting her urge to kill in a bid to unite humans with her brethren, making this movie the most peaceful in its genre. With a tame wolf as protagonist, the potential nightmare is really just a pleasant dream to unite the two disparate worlds. The question is: Do we want that to happen? --Trinie Dalton

Product Description

As a young girl living in the remote mountains of Colorado, Vivian (Bruckner) watched helplessly as her family was murdered by a pack of angry men for the secret they carried in their blood. Vivian survived the attack by running into the woods and changing into a wolf. Ten years later, Vivian is living a relatively safe and normal life in Bucharest, Romania. Vivian spends her days working in a chocolate shop and nights trawling the city's underground clubs, fending off the reckless antics of her cousin Rafe, and his gang of delinquents he refers to as "The Five."

Vivian's life begins to unravel when she has a chance encounter with Aiden (Dancy), an artist researching Bucharest' ancient art and relics for his next graphic novel. Aiden pursues Vivian until she relents and begins to see him, but she can't bring herself to tell him the truth - and lives in fear of showing him who she really is. Even though Vivian has sworn never to kill, she is as much an animal as she is human, and her love for Aiden threatens to cast him to the very wolves who saved her life and who are waiting for their chance to hunt him as prey.

Blood & Chocolate is a very good movie it takes a new look on werewolf movies and this movie is awesome.

3 out of 5 stars Bucharest and Special Effects Soften this Werewolf Film.......2007-07-01

BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE (a misnomer at best!) is another in the seemingly endless appetite-for-horror-flicks appeasers. Freely adapted from the Annette Curtis Klause's novel by screenwriters Ehren Kruger and Christopher Landon and directed by Katja von Garnier, this version of the loup-garou legend takes place in Bucharest, Romania and while the corps group of 'night creatures' carrying the mantle of the clan appears small, the group seems more updated in its views of survival in the world of 'normal man' than most: the werewolves are a normal appearing bunch who change into rather elegant wolves through computer generated magic in a manner that removes much of the gruesome element form the film. It helps.

Loup-garou child Vivian (Agnes Bruckner) witnessed the death of her parents at the hands of men in Colorado and escaped to Bucharest where 10 years later she is the next in line to be the 'bride' of pack leader Gabriel (a gaunt appearing Olivier Martinez). Her aunt Astrid (Katja Riemann) with whom she lives had been the first love of Gabriel and a tension is set early in the film about the plight of the pack versus the desire to be a normal human, a tension that will help the resolution of the film's love story. The mysterious, questioning Vivian meets young artist Aiden (Hugh Dancy) who himself has escaped America and his own demons. An obvious infatuation cum attraction occurs and though Vivian admits to warm feelings for Aiden, she knows her affair is doomed: her cousin Rafe (Bryan Dick) and his pack of five discover her tragic near crossover the line of human desire, and the crisis of the story proceeds along the lines of victim and pursuer.

The unfortunate title for the film is clumsily drawn from the negligently important job Vivian has working in a chocolate factory, hardly a comparison for the importance blood plays in the hunt and kill formula that the title supposedly represents. But then it does set up the dichotomy of choice Vivian must make, whether to obey her loup-garou destiny or enter the realm of normal human motivations and desires. Yes, it all gets pretty corny, but in many ways this 'netherworld of monster types' film rises above others in its management of the transformation scenes (actually quite beautiful) and in the acting of Hugh Dancy. In the end it is the chance to see how truly Bucharest as a city really is that makes the movie worth watching. The cast does the best it can with the weak material. Grady Harp, July 07

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Film. Better Than Chocolate........2007-06-28

I watched this film with a modicum of hesitation because it is not really my genre. I was more than pleasantly surprised to enjoy what I consider the best cinematic offering for the year to date. It is a beautiful combination of a "Werewolf in London", the "Bourne Identity" and "Before Sunrise", with Romania providing an exquisite location for what essentially is a very poignant love story, and very tastefully executed, with finesse and class and Romance. The soundtrack is simply first rate, the acting is very capable, with the two very memorable and commanding leads, and the violence is the antithesis to gratuitous. An Avid and very astute reader stated that the film followed the book very well. However, you need not have read the book in order to find this film a truly well done film, with virtually nothing lacking, with the exception of more special features. As of late June, this is the best film of the year, in any genre. After seeing this film, Lace, Chocolate, Romania, the Colorado Rockies, not so much blood, will be all that more appreciated.

Blood & Chocolate [Region 99]

This movie sucked. If you read the book, please save yourself the trauma of watching this!!! The only thing that it did have from the book was the title and the names of characters. It truly traumatized me. My friend said that I sat for 2 1/2 hours saying "what the hell happened? They had the book...what the hell happened?" Needless to say I liked the book and wish I had saved the $9 it cost to watch it in theatre. I should have asked for my money back, but I was too traumatized to think straight.

1 out of 5 stars Book and Movie Don't Mesh.......2007-06-23

Have you ever read a book that you LOVE and then they turn it into a movie that just doesn't seem to match? That's what they did with Blood and Chocolate.
The movie ruined the book, and that's all there is to it.
I LOVED the book, and I had read it more than one time before I had heard that it was being turned into a movie. I was really excited, but then tonight I actually saw the movie.
At the end, for the last 5 minutes, my eyes were open REALLY wide and my mouth was wide open because I couldn't believe what was happening. The ending was almost the complete opposite of the ending in the book...which I happened to like.
If you like the book, don't see the movie.
If you've seen the movie, read the book and then yell at the movie for being so different.

4 out of 5 stars A very decent Dr. Moreau rip off and a bad dubbed European film.......2005-08-30

First up on this Killer Creature Double Feature is "Blood Creature," which is the U.S. reissue title. This 1959 film was originally released as "Terror is a Man" and "Creature From Blood Island." What you really need to know is that this is yet another un-credited version of H.G. Wells's novel "The Island of Dr. Moreau." This screenplay by Harry Paul Harber makes this the island of Dr. Charles Girard (Francis Lederer) who lives with his beautiful wife Frances (Greta Thyssen), and works on turning a panther into a beast-man (Flory Carlos). When his boat sinks, William Fitzgerald (Richard Derr) ends up on shore of Isla de Sangre (Blood Island) and is treated as a guest. But Frances is afraid of the dark and there is clearly something going on.

What makes this version of the cautionary tale by Wells different from most of the others is that once William finds out what Dr. Girard is up to and that Mrs. Girard is really, really, unhappy, he watches the experiments and engages in discussions with the doctor on the nature of man. The whole bit where the hero tries to get the woman he loves out of harm's way bit really does not happen in this one. Apparently when William notes there is a fine line between genius and madness, he does not feel comfortable making a judgment as to which side of the line the mad scientist is working on. So things get to take

Actually, as a Dr. Moreau rip-off movie this one is pretty good. Director Gerardo de Leon knows how to light his shots to great effect and how to best show (or not show) the beast-man. The love triangle does not really get in the way of the film, and the fact that Frances is sympathetic towards the beast-man instead of fearing him (that is left to the maid), makes this one stand out as well. Best of all, despite the promise of the trailer for this film, it does NOT have the "Terror Chimes" that tell you when to cover your eyes (as is the case with Creature Feature DVDs there are the trailers for both features, plus a third trailer for "Devil''s Hand", and the Popeye Cartoon "Spree Lunch"). I was surprised, but this one ends up being a solid four stars and a better telling of the Dr. Moreau story than anything made in the last couple of decades, so it gets four stars.

Our second feature, "Werewolf in a Girls' Dormitory" was also released in the United States as "Ghoul in a Girls' Dormitory," "Monster Among the Girls," although its original title as near as I can determine was "Lycanthropus." Now, you have to admit from the title you are expecting to see a werewolf run around a dormitory filled with half-naked young girls, but that is not the case. Yes, European films got to more explicit nudity and gore earlier than their American counterparts, but this film still predates that point in cinematic history and "German shepherd in an institute for wayward girls" would be a more accurate title.

It turns out this particular girl's dormitory is not at a college but a private institute for wayward girls, or at least, a version of what this badly dubbed Italian production thinks would be an American reform school, which means they are mostly bad girls, but with one good girl, Priscilla (Barbara Lass) for us to root for. The plot is basically that Dr. Julian Olcott (Carl Schell) is the academy's new teacher and becomes the target of chief bad girl, Mary (Mary McNeeran). It seems Julian used to be a real doctor, but there was some sort of scandal. He was cleared in court, but his career was still ruined and now he is starting over as a teacher. As for Mary, this is one troubled kid and before we can clearly number all of her sins she is killed by a creature of the night. Everyone thinks there are wolves on the loose, but we know better because we have seen the title of the film.

So, basically "Werewolf in a Girls' Dormitory" is a mystery thriller that asks who oh who can the werewolf and/or ghoul possibly be? (actually when we see it in action it is clearly a German shepherd). The problem is that although everybody (and I mean EVERYBODY) in this film acts suspiciously if you do not know who the werewolf really is then you should give up on this genre altogether. The finally tally on this one is that there is no nudity, the transitions of the monster are laughable, and there is no mystery at all to whodunit. Still, this is an entertaining bad movie, which has some sense of style even if the acting is pretty bad (and some priceless moments of dubbed translation). Bottom line is that there are enough decent moments to go along with the deliciously bad parts to make this worthwhile if you like to enjoy bad movies.

3 out of 5 stars Print Quality.......2003-11-12

The drive-in double bill DVD concept is a good one, but the quality of the Blood Creature print is truly awful, with lots of jumps and scratches! Surely a better copy of this film could have been found.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh..........2002-09-13

Note: I only watched "Werewolf in a Girl's Dormitory."
The print was perfectly dreadful and "Wereworlf in a Girl's Dormitory" was a disgraceful piece of junk. This (shudder) Madacy DVD has a Popeye cartoon plus theatrical trailers, which barely manages to give this lousy disc 2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great package offers loads of fun!!.......2001-11-29

I've read the other reviews and am impressed with their background knowledge. I, too, am a fan of 60's trash horror films, and bought this DVD only because of the price. I am most entertained, and happy with this humble investment. "Blood Creature" was eerie & atmospheric, a little claustrophobic, with storms, etc., adding to the mood. It's silly and fun, and the beautiful Greta Thyssen is there to boot! (I remember her from a film called "Journey to the Seventh Planet", a Danish film that was released in America by American-International, the greatest studio ever to put out "the best of the worst", all the drive-in movies, and practically everything Roger Corman ever did. Richard Derr also appears, typically luggish and looking customarily concerned. I loved him in "When Worlds Collide", one of my favorites. "Werewolf..." is fun, too, with creepy atmosphere and a Peter Lorre look-alike who is sufficiently bizarre. The dubbing is really bad (every line sounds like it came out of a studio microphone...which it did), but there's a lot of homage to the films of James Whale & Val Lewton: suspense and dark intrigue. The song "Ghoul in the School" is an added treat. These two films, tacky as they are, would be OK for the price, but there are previews and even a Popeye cartoon (featuring Bluto & Wimpy, alas, no Olive Oyl). Whatever aesthetic elements may be lacking regarding the actual artistic worth of these 2 films, I wouldn't worry about it. My hat goes off in salute to Madacy Enterainment for putting out a very good package at an unbelievably good price. I hope they continue this trend, and maybe we'll see Corman's original "Not of This Earth" or maybe even "Journey to the 7th Planet". One can only hope.

3 out of 5 stars Friday night at the ol' drive-in!.......2001-05-21

Werewolf in a Girls' Dormitory (AKA Lycanthropus, The Ghoul in School, and I Married a Werewolf) is one of those movies with a great title, like I Married a Monster from Outer Space and Slave of the Cannibal God, that grabs your attention with its lurid and even ludicrous premise, and makes you want to see the movie, if only to see if it lives up to the title. And like I Married a Monster and Cannibal God, which are pretty solid films, Werewolf just about makes it, too. The plot has a werewolf finishing off the girls at a "finishing school," which is actually an upper-class reformatory, and the attempt to catch the beast. The black and white image quality and the sound are good in this transfer. There's even a catchy little 2-line title song -- `There Was A Ghoul In School!'

I first saw Blood Creature (AKA Terror Is a Man, Creature from Blood Island, and The Gory Creatures) on late night TV many years ago, and it was pretty scary even on the small screen and with commercial interruptions. There was just something uncanny and unnerving about those not-quite-human eyes staring out of those white bandages. This was the first entry in the Philippines/Eddie Romero Blood Island franchise. Richard Derr (When Worlds Collide) stars as a shipwreck survivor who washes up on an island inhabited by a mad scents (Francis Lederer) and his beautiful, lonely wife (Greta Thyssen--Miss Denmark 1952) and a bandage-swathed creature who threatens them all. Inspired by The Island of Dr. Moreau and well worth watching. The black and white image quality and the sound are not too good, though. The image is sharp, but there are lines and streaks, and some dialog is lost on the soundtrack. Just passable.

This DVD offers few bonus features. Just the movie trailers, a preview of another movie (The Devil's Hand) and, of all things, a Popeye the Sailor Man cartoon, which is amusing. The stern FBI warning comes at the end of the movies here, and is a rather cute animated feature. All this disc needs to complete the Friday night drive-in experience is promo to visit the snackbar, a Movietone newsreel, and a warning about pay-TV! This double feature is a nice addition to the collection of any fan of the horror genre, and it's a bargain at this price.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Homemade Film.......2005-09-27

Really bad shot on video "film" made by not one, not two, but three amateur videomakers. If you're going to make a bad horror film at least throw in some blood, gore and nudity. There is some blood provided by latex cut off arm props bought at a Halloween store. There are lesbians and hookers but no nudity or sex. The lesbians spend a lot of time in bed but only talking. There seems to be no editing effects- fades, wipes etc. Once in a while a bit of black appears to seperate scenes.Terrible music by bad heavy metal bands whose websites take up the majorty of the end credits. The werewolves are represented by rubber masks that are attached to just the "actors" face. They didn't even bother to apply brown makeup to their necks, arms or wrists.I guarentee a 10 year old with a video camera could put together a better movie. No reason at all to buy, rent or watch this film except as an example of how not to make a low budget video.

1 out of 5 stars strictly for genre fans.......2004-05-04

I purchased the dvd of 'Blood Of The Werewolf' because I recently got totally immersed in werewolf films due to the recent film, 'Underworld.' However, please note that 'Blood...' is something to view only if you are a complete fan of werewolf films and will see any and every one you can, heaven forbid attempt to own every one, especially this one.

Warning, this film is very poorly done. It is filmed in three 'short story' sections, each done with handheld old fashioned vhs camera recorders, which means the sound is ridiculous and the lighting is non-existent. They're not trying to be artistic in a 'Blair Witch' respect, they're just not professionals. Basically, avoid this and don't waste your time or money unless you are a total werewolf movie buff. There, I've said it again, and in my second paragraph.

Three short films: "Blood Reunion" about some dude (obviously gay) who returns to the hick town he grew up in to find the girl he once loved who is sheltered by a domineering grandmother because of a family 'curse.' "Old Blood," is about a lesbian couple who fight about the one being a werewolf and not wanting to be and the other who wants to be a werewolf but doesn't know what she's getting into. "Manbeast," is a bunch of guys in combat uniforms running around the woods chasing another guy in military fatigues for some reason which we get explained in a twist ending.

There are two main things that make this film crappy. Firstly, the special effects are sooooooo amateur. We're talking werewolf masks. That's it. Just masks. You know, the kind you can get at Halloween USA each year in October. It's not bad enough the stories are not executed in any form. It's like, "Oh! I have a really cool idea for a movie, guys! We'll deal with hereditary werewolf's, throw in some lesbians, get some awesome 80's hair rocker cover band to do some tunes, and get a dvd duplication company to ship it out to stores!" I guess that explains why it costs so little to purchase. It is worth it's price. Ok, secondly, the acting is really bad. I know we've all seen bad acting, but this is high school level bad acting. I can't imagine any of these people actually being in a feature film except as an extra perhaps and even then, they'd need an agent, right?

What IS good about this film? Well, maybe only the tiny bit of information about lycanthropy which is relayed. Granted, it's all just mush mush the writers have put together from other films. If you know absolutely nothing about werewolves this would give you some idea, but really now, there are many more real films that get it all done much more professionally. This movie tries to convey a complexity that isn't there and never makes us care for or understand any of the characters. We can't really because it's so bad it's not even pretentious, which could draw the viewer in on a camp level. And geesh, does everyone have to be so darn unattractive?

I watched this in pain because I felt it was my duty to do so and warn everyone curious about owning this film to not do so unless you hear voices in your head telling you to own every werewolf movie you can. You could rent it if it's even available, but I doubt it since it is rather low end on the pole, and see for yourself. You may be so inspired by the stupidity you witness you will go out with your digital camera and make your own movie, which would be certainly better than this boring trash.
