Any short list of the all-time greatest Westerns is bound to include this 1948 Howard Hawks classic about an epic cattle drive. Red River features one of John Wayne's greatest performances. Like his Ethan Edwards in John Ford's 1956 masterpiece The Searchers, the Duke plays an isolated and unsympathetic man who is possessed by bitterness. Wayne is Texas rancher Tom Dunson, who adopts a young boy orphaned in an Indian massacre. That boy, Matthew Garth (played as an adult by Montgomery Clift in his screen debut), becomes Dunson's assistant and heir apparent--until Dunson's temper gets out of control during a long cattle drive and Matt intervenes to stop him. From that moment on, Dunson swears he will kill Matt. Red River has everything a great Western ought to have: a sweeping sense of history, spectacular landscapes, stampedes, gunfights, Indian attacks, and, of course, Walter Brennan as Dunson's crusty old cook and comic sidekick, Nadine Groot. As a special bonus, the film also features the legendary Harry Carey (upon whom Wayne would base some of his gestures in The Searchers) and his son Harry Carey Jr., who became a fixture in Ford and Hawks Westerns. Red River is essential for anyone who loves Westerns, or movies in general. This one's a real beaut. --Jim Emerson

Description

One of the finest westerns ever made, this "monumental, sweeping and powerful" masterpiece (Variety) features impassioned performances, stunning cinematography and adventure on a grand scale. Starring John Wayne, Montgomery Clift (in his screen debut), Walter Brennan, Harry Carey, Sr. and Noah Beery, Jr., Red River is a hard-hitting, action-packed adventure that captures the grandeur, majestyand dangerof the wild American West.Wayne gives "one of the best performances of his career" (Cinebooks) as Tom Dunson, a self-made cattle baron who'll do anything to protect his way of life. So when plummeting livestock values demand that he drive his herd through thetreacherous Chisholm Trail, Tom proves that he'll risk anything to reach his destination even his own sanity.

5 out of 5 stars Red River.......2007-06-25

Director Howard Hawks gave western icon John Wayne another indelible, ruggedly stubborn character to play in his masterful "Red River," a high point of their many collaborations. Populated by colorful supporting characters, including the salty Walter Brennan as camp cook Groot Nadine, "River" combines psychological drama, action, and suspense in a stirring, expansive western landscape. The final settling of scores between Wayne and Clift is unforgettable.

4 out of 5 stars Great Western, slightly disappointing ending........2007-05-24

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It's rare to see John Wayne playing a bad guy but he carried it well. The photography was great but the film suffers from contrast particularly during some of the frequent night time scenes. Images are almost lost in the dark of the night due to the limitations of old black and white film. If the light dark contrast could be adjusted, the film would benefit greatly. Beyond that, the acting was great, particularly Montgomery Clift. My lone complaint was the ending. It has a sudden character twist where Wayne shifts gears 180 degrees and everyone just seems to pass it off and forgive his characters actions through out the movie simply because he suddenly turns over a new leaf in the final two minutes. This was just a little too much for me. I would have preferred an actual showdown/shoot out.

4 out of 5 stars A Massive Cattle Drive on the Chisholm Trail.......2007-04-11

The movie begins in 1851 in south Texas near the Rio Grande. Cattle baron Tom Dunson (John Wayne) begins with a small group of cows. After 14 years of hard work, he owns a herd consisting of 10,000 head of cattle. The cows are branded with the Red River mark (parallel curves which represent the banks of the Red River).

At the end of the American Civil War, the area is destitute, and Dunson's cattle have little value locally. For this reason, Dunson wants to drive them along the Chisholm Trail to Missouri. But all kinds of problems develop during the long, tedious drive. Quitters abandon Dunson. He finds and shoots them. Noises cause massive cattle stampedes. Finally, a mutineer takes over and leads the herd to Abilene, Kansas, to be sold for a hefty price and then loaded on a railroad. Will Dunson still get his rightful share of his life's work?

This movie comes in black and white. Made in 1948, it shows a young John Wayne. It also clearly predates political correctness, in that Indians are portrayed only as savages and despoilers of Euro-Americans.

3 out of 5 stars Red River.......2007-03-24

Acting/directing not as good as expected, but still a must see for any serious western fan.

5 out of 5 stars Red River in color?.......2007-02-27

I love this film of course. It is a classic. All the elements of a great film are there. The performances, the music. But why decry the ending? That ending is the film. Thats what happened in the film. I suppose some people do not like a happy ending. Would like to see John Wayne killed and come away from a viewing that resolved the story in that way. But not me I like the ending as it is. So I am happy. However one beef. This film has appeared on TV in color I have seen it several times. I just wonder why it does not seem to be available commercialy in color. Younger people seem to have an aversion to b and w. My grandchildren for instance. It is a cinema mystery why this film is not available to buy in color. Does anyone know the answer?

1 out of 5 stars Beware, incomplete and heavily censored!!.......2007-07-06

Why would anyone waste time and money releasing a film on DVD in a form that is confused and incomplete due to heavy editing and censoring?? Such is the case with Savage Weekend. I first saw the film several years ago at a drive-in theater in Georgia. I vividly recall that there were several nude and racy scenes and some fairly graphic violence, as well. Well, if you buy this DVD you can safely play it for the kids because all of the "adult" content is missing!! Also, the picture quality is absolutely dreadful and grainy and looks like it was copied from a very poor quality source; such as a copy made on VHS at home from a poor cable t.v. service!! Maybe one day Anchor Bay or someone else will give this film the treatment it deserves and release it in the original, complete, unedited and uncensored version. Also with decent and clearer picture quality, too. As a fan of actress Caitlin O'Heaney (aka Kathleen Heaney), this DVD is a real letdown.

5 out of 5 stars On a bit of a different note.........2007-05-22

Not really going to talk about how "cheesy" some of these films are - "Drive-In Movie Classics" pretty much sums it up and that is what you get.

What I want to do is make a couple of comments about this package of movies that I think many of the other reviewers overlooked:

1 - The packaging of the discs - the package I got consisted of a box with 12 individual cardboard sleeves, each with a single DVD inside. Personally I like this as it seems to have kept the discs secure during shipment. I've bought other multi-disc sets and have never been that impressed with how they were shoe-horned into a single huge clam-shell case. Another thing that I like about the slim sleeves that these discs come in - it makes it really easy to drop one or two of these movies into the pockets of my laptop and/or my portable DVD player case. Also on the sleeves is a short description of each movie - in a very readable 12-pt font.

2 - The number of discs, there are twelve double-sided discs in this collection, with two movies on each side. Why do I think that is important? Mainly because I've bought other sets where a cheaper publisher crammed four movies onto each disc side so as to get 50 movies on five discs. To do that they had to greatly compress the videos which made them have a huge amount of artifacts and pixilation - making them almost unwatchable. The movies on this 12-disc set are of excellent quality, at least as good as possible considering the source material. While there appears to have been some defects in the prints used to make these DVDs (scratches and whatnot) there doesn't seem to be any noticeable additional problems introduced from overly compressing the films to get them on the discs.

This is the third set of videos from Mill Creek Entertainment that I've purchased; I also bought their "Hollywood Legends" and "Cartoon Classics" collections. I must say that I've been very pleased with all three sets and look forward to buying more of their collections.

5 out of 5 stars 50 Drive-In Movies of Public Domain Goodness.......2007-04-27

Drive-In Movie Classics is a collection of 50 movies that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $21.99 for my set and that comes down to about 44 cents per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.

Anyways, here is how I rate the movies in Drive-In Movie Classics:

Excellent:

Absolution
Horror of the Zombies
Night Train to Terror
Shock
Snowbeast

Great:

Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride
Don't Look in the Basement
Island Monster, The
Unsane
Werewolf vs. Vampire Women, The

Good:

Creeper
Creepers
Day of the Panther
Devil with Seven Faces, The
Don't Open Till Christmas
Firing Line, The
Going Steady
Invasion of the Bee Girls
Legacy of Blood
Murder Mansion, The
Prime Time
Slave of the Cannibal God
Spare Parts
Trauma
Women of Devil's Island

Bad:

Beast from Haunted Cave
Black Hooker
Breakout from Oppression
Country Blue
Death By Dialogue
Fiend
Guy from Harlem, The
In Hot Pursuit
I Wonder Who's Killing Her Now?
Jive Turkey
Katie's Passion
Lazarus Syndrome, The
Legend of Big Foot
Mad Dog
Mama Dracula
Manipulator, The
Prisoner of the Lost Universe
Rattlers
Savage Journey
Savage Weekend
Throw Out the Anchor
TNT Jackson
Treasure of Tayopa
Twister's Revenge
Vengeance of the Zombies
Voodoo Black Exorcist

Overall, a very good collection that is well worth your time and money.

3 out of 5 stars On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 4.1.......2007-04-14

Drive-in movies are an all but forgotten part of the teenage-dating ritual.

Once upon a time, on Friday and Saturday nights (weather permitting), kids everywhere would head out to their local drive-in theater, ostensibly to catch a double feature. The car would get parked in a somewhat elevated space and a tinny little speaker had to be hung on one of the two front seat windows. After lighting up a dashboard bug coil (to keep the mosquitoes away) then came the quick run to buy popcorn, french fries and Cokes. Finally, back in the car, we'd settle down and wait for the show to start.

When the snack bar commercial started running (usually right around dusk), we all knew that soon the fun would begin! The "Coming Attractions" and a cartoon were followed by the opening credits of the first film. That was the cue for most kids to stop watching that weathered outdoor screen, and begin to watch each other (and then some). In this fashion, we happily managed to ignore some of the strangest movies ever made.

The DRIVE-IN MOVIE CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK is the perfect way for those of us old enough to remember what we missed back then (and why!) to finally see exactly what was going on up there on the screen. (To the younger folks who may never have experienced a drive-in theater, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out what your future parents were doing on movie nights.)

5 out of 5 stars Reliving the early sixties!.......2007-05-12

I identify with this movie because I grew up at the same time and my two priorities were girls and cars or vice versa (come to think about it, that's still my two priorities!) I have owned a VHS version of Americian Graffitti for many years but I wanted a DVD version hoping that it will last many more years.
The original movie is hard to sequel so More American Graffitti didn't do a lot for me.

    5 out of 5 stars Great deal........2007-05-05

I would award 5 stars for the American Graffiti movie alone. It is well-presented here, and also includes some special features, including an informative "Making of.." documentary that features interviews with alot of the cast as well as those behind the camera. The movie is a classic, and is required viewing for any lover of fine movies.

But that's not all. The package also included the sequel to American Graffiti.. "More American Graffiti". This movie is not nearly the timeless classic as the original, but it is a great view for anyone who liked the first movie. Save for a few uninteresting plotlines involving the counter-culture in the 60's, the movie holds its own rather well. Milner's last race before his emminent death (this is not a spoiler, trust me) and Toad's tour in Vietnam are particularly worth viewing.

If you're willing to sacrifice not having the "Collector's Edition" of American Graffiti in exchange for having the sequel as well, then this is a great buy.

      Description

Hate and revenge go together like hand in glove.

In THE GLOVE, a down-on-his luck bounty hunter (John Saxon of BLACK CHRISTMAS) buys a one way ticket to Hell when he tries to capture a vengeful ex-con (Rosey Grier) out to punish an order of corrupt prison guards with the torture device they used on him: a riot glove made of 5 lbs. of lead and steel.

Co-starring Joanna Cassidy (BLADE RUNNER) and a cast of veteran Hollywood actors, including Keenan Wynn (PIRANHA), Joan Blondell (NIGHTMARE ALLEY) and Aldo Ray).

In SEARCH AND DESTROY, ex-GIs Perry King (CLASS OF 1984) and Don Stroud (PERDITA DURANGO) fight for their lives as members of their elite combat unit are picked off one by one by the embittered soldier they left behind enemy lines.

George Kennedy (AIRPORT) and Tisa Farrow (ZOMBIE) are also featured in this edgy action thriller from director William Fruet (DEATH WEEKEND).

      5 out of 5 stars Well worth a look!.......2007-04-27

This is a well studied cautionary tale about the potential perils of car crime. Newark in New Jersey had a reputation in the mid-90s for all kinds of car crimes including carjacking at gunpoint and this film cleverly taps into that era. There was talk about lines being crossed by Newark police officers back then and the movie takes a look at that also. I found it difficult sometimes to decide where to place my sympathies. Yes, the car crime itself is mindless and destructive as anyone who has had their car stolen will know but in the movie, the police often come off looking no better than the criminals they are pursuing.

Gabriel Casseus and Sharron Corley give very impressive performances as Midget and Jason respectively. If you're a car enthusiast like me and, like me, you didn't see this movie when it first came out back in 1995, you might feel the cars (which are important characters in this movie as well) date it somewhat but it's not overwhelming. The best thing about this movie for me though is that although it doesn't preach or moralise, it shows very clearly that for young black men, a life of crime can only lead to a limited number of conclusions. That said, when tragedy inevitably ensues, it's still very sad.

Props to director Nick Gomez - he often gets us right into the cars and takes us along for the joyrides - and props to Spike Lee and his 40 Acres & A Mule filmworks for executive producing the movie. I'll be watching this one again and again.

Banging soundtrack as well, by the way. I might actually get it on CD...

      5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-03-09

I purchased this movie for my teenager son, hoping he could see the harsh reality of what could happen to him following the wrong crowd. This movie showed all the basics and then some.

5 out of 5 stars True to life flick.......2005-10-27

This is about urban life ever made. Nick Gomez carefully winds his tale into car thieves almost into greek tradgy. In the lead role as Jason, Shannon Corley shows great leading staus. Jason is played as a character who wants a better life but is caught up with the street life.

      Description

Creation of the Humanoids: Following a catastrophic nuclear war, mankind creates a race of blue-skinned androids to assist in the reconstruction of civilization. Disparagingly referred to as "Clickers," the robots grow more intelligent and human-like. To stop their evolution and to preserve their own rule, a fanatical group called The Order of Flesh and Blood is created. Are the robots really man's enemy or his last hope for survival? Featuring cinematography by Academy Award winner Hal Mohr, and makeup by famed artist Jack P. Pierce (Frankenstein, The Mummy), this philosophical science fiction drive-in classic was rumored to have been a favorite of pop artist Andy Warhol. War Between the Planets: When a series of natural disasters plague civilization, scientists learn that the culprit is a seemingly barren planet set on a collision course with Earth. A team of astronauts is sent to counter the impending Armageddon, but after landing on the wayward planet they discover that it has a bloodthirsty life of its own. Also known as Planet on the Prowl and Il Planeta Errante, this extremely stylish Italian sci-fi thriller directed by Antonio Margheriti (Castle of Blood, Cannibal Apocalypse) was the third film in the Gamma I Quadrilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Worth getting just for "Creation of the Humanoids".......2006-11-25

Let me get the technical details out of the way first. The transfer is superb, picture quality excellent, sound excellent and it's letterboxed so you get it in the original "drive-in" aspect ratio. The only technical detail in "Creation..." that's sub-par is they needed better proofreading for the subtitles. There are a few errata, and if, like me, you use the subtitles, that can make the brain itch.

"Creation" itself, however, remains eminently watchable and utterly undated. Yes, it's a low-budget "B" movie. But the sets are acceptable, and the acting and dialogue at least as good as any TV series of the early 60s. There wasn't a note anywhere in this that sounds out of place in the story. NOTHING in this film strained the cables on my suspension of disbelief.

But as science-fiction, this movie shines like a well-lit diamond for thoughtfulness of script, philosophical depths explored, and some very human and HUMANE moments. I've never been able to forget the line about "Irony, the funniest form of humor." since the first time I watched this film back in the sixties. When I found out later in the story just what Pax (a Clicker) meant by that comment and the joyous peal of laughter which accompanied it, I agreed with him, and laughed like hell.

And wait for a line that begins "Only the memory..." For that line alone, I would have bought this picture, because that line, perfectly delivered by Don Doolittle, contains the true humility that marks all real scientific endeavorers. It also raises philosophical questions that haunt me to this day.

I can't speak of "War Between the Planets". I found it unwatchable.

But I don't care. I've wanted a GOOD copy of "Creation of the Humanoids" in my collection even before I knew a collection was possible, and now I have it. Both my budget and my time are at a premium, but this incarnation of that picture is worth every penny I spent getting it, and every wonderful minute watching it. In my opinion, this is one of the five best science-fiction movies of all time.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Robot Movie.......2006-07-13

I purchased the DVD for "Creation of the Humanoids." I was pleased by the quality of the movie as well as the entertaining extras on the disk. Over the years, I had forgotten the other movie, "War between the Planets." Since most good sci fi movies don't go beyond a B movie, no need to nitpick on why neither movie won an Oscar.

These two movies might be packaged together for opposites between them. First, rich special effects in `Planets' almost make up for a weak story and predictable action scenes. In contrast, `Humanoids' presents a very strong story, adequate effects, but simplistic scenery. The stark backgrounds in `Humanoids' scenes look cheap at first. Yet, the simplicity seems a deliberate way to focus attention on the sometimes-deep dialogue and excellent acting as robots.

`Humanoids' starts by explaining that a small percentage of humanity survives the big nuclear war. Over time, civilization carries on but faces slow death from a low rate of healthy births per man/woman "contract." Humans, and the robots programmed to serve them, adjust to the realization of slow death. People either accept robots or violently oppose their increasing complexity. Unlike Star Trek's "What Are Little Girls Made Of" (original TV series) where a robot is a piece of property incapable of genuine emotion, `Humanoids' takes the opposite track. A woman purchases a robot/butler/companion and pays extra for him to have a sense of humor. Even though machines lack vision, he says that no one asks to be created.

While robots in movies such as "Star Wars" or "Westworld" entertain, "Creation of the Humanoids" positions itself as a thought-provoking but fun experience at or near the top of robot stories. I give this B movie an A+ for science fiction. "Creation of the Humanoids" is a must-have for any robot fan.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent transfer.......2006-06-28

I'll second everything that :Bob Eggleton said, and add that the video quality on this DVD - particularly for "Creation of the Humanoids" is very good.

There are muddy DVD and VHS copies of this movie available elsewhere, but I believe that they are dubs of the 1985 Sun Cost VHS that had a bad edit glitch near the beginning.
This version is much cleaner and and sharper. It looks like a transfer from the original film. It still has the glitch, but it's almost imperceptible.

"Creation of the Humanoids" really is a rough gem - almost everything about it is poorly done - yet the movie WORKS. When it's done, the story sticks with you. It's great SF.

Antonio Margheriti's "War of the Planets" is fun to watch. The rest of the Quadrology is available on DVD as well; one or two appear on the "SciFi Classics Collection: 50 Movie Pack"

This DVD is a great addition to any GOOD Science Fiction movie collection.

      4 out of 5 stars Fun Retro Sci-Fi...UHF memories..........2006-06-01

CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS is perhaps one of the most creative and low-budgeted films ever made. Despite it's B film title, zero budget, it has alot of good ideas in it that sound alot like Asimov's laws of robotics at one point. The film is light years ahead of it's time in predicting the dilemma of what happens when robots-created by Man-think on their own, have feelings and start to make decisions-contrary to Man. And how even a "fundamentalist" order of humans arises from this threat and what happens when they clash. There is no action to speak of, it all comes of like a play done on minimalist sets, but shot in blazing technicolor. The acting is surprisingly well done if slightly overdone in parts. I only ever saw this on a fuzzy UHF showing in the l970's, and never saw it again-or it's "twist" ending which comes out of the blue. The print is quite good-gets better as it goes along, the opening credits are a bit scratchy however. The second feature WAR BETWEEN THE PLANETS (AKA PLANETS AGAINST US) is the fourth in Antonio Margheriti's Italian space opera quartet(Previous entries were WAR OF THE PLANETS, WILD WILD PLANET and THE SNOW DEVILS) and has lots of Italian eye-candy gals and macho men in the same outfits seen in the last three films and all revolving, kind of around the Gamma One Space Station but this is one of the lackluster in action of that set of films, compared to say the really fun WILD WILD PLANET(Walter Manley, the producer on this, would later take his space station concept to Japan and make THE GREEN SLIME, in essentially the same universe, but now Space Station Gamma Three). The print on this one is from the theaterical release by Fanfare Films in 1971 that played at mostly drive-ins back in the day with what I remember was a huge ad campaign. That said, it's a fairly nice print and, the whole film is *narrated* by Norman Rose-a voice announcer who worked for NBC in the 1970's and did the introduction to DESTROY ALL MONSTERS(the AIP version) as well as Promise Butter ads.

Good fun viewing brings back a time when these things aired on TV with regular play.

By turns hard-nosed and ribald, They Drive by Night smashes through a vintage Warner Bros. yarn about truck drivers, the Depression, and one duplicitous dame. The opening reels are a forceful look at the dangerous lives of independent truckers (George Raft and Humphrey Bogart as brothers--Bogie in the supporting role, though he would soon eclipse Raft in Hollywood), battling the system and the economy. The final section veers into a less exciting murder frame-up, but Ida Lupino is so delicious as the Black Widow, it works. The robust humor of director Raoul Walsh dominates the film, with some truly hilarious double entendres aimed at outfoxing the censors. At the center of many such one-liners is Ann Sheridan, as a waitress who slings more than hash. It's close to being a classic, and the road sequences are as vital as those in The Grapes of Wrath, made the same year. --Robert Horton

      Description

George Raft and Humphrey Bogart share a driving ambition in They Drive by Night, a feisty tale of brothers trying to make a go of their independent trucking enterprise. Ann Sheridan plays a truck-stop waitress who can dish both the daily special and the patter. And Ida Lupino is the headstrong executive who mixes business and romance with murder. With Bogart again riding shotgun en route to leading-man stardom (a stature he would achieve the following year) and Raft handling the wheel in one of his best roles of the decade, this fine example of Warner Bros. social-conscience filmmaking (directed by Raoul Walsh) proved a sturdy vehicle for both actors. The movie proved even more fortuitous for Lupino. Her courtoom scene of babbling derangement made her a celebrated "overnight" sensation that resulted in a seven-year studio contract for her. Year: 1940 Director: Raoul Walsh Starring: George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart, Special Feature: Original Theatrical Trailer B&W/93 Mins.

4 out of 5 stars Before Bogey was a legend.......2007-04-11

It was a pleasure seeing Ida Lupino in this, her first significant role at age 22. She is sexy, pretty and more than a bit nasty. Sometimes dubbed "the poor man's Bette Davis" she shows here that she could have handled some of Davis's roles very well.

The story itself is a tale about truck drivers that pits them against the loan sharks and emphasizes the danger of driving without much sleep on roads not yet of Interstate quality. It takes place in California in the late thirties. Lupino plays Lana Carlsen, the bored wife of the head of a trucking company who only has eyes for Joe Fabrini (George Raft), who only has eyes for Cassie Hartley (Ann Sheridan). Humphrey Bogart plays his brother Paul Fabrini and really takes a backseat. That would change beginning the next year when Bogey would star with Ida Lupino in High Sierra (1941).

It is interesting to contrast the two films both directed by long time Hollywood legend Raoul Walsh. They Drive by Night has a distinct thirties feel to it and not just because George Raft stars. The sense of the Depression is still with the characters in TDBN as the truck drivers and waitress Cassie worry about their jobs. There is a sense of identification with the working man that is absent from High Sierra, which really began Bogart's tough guy movie persona.

Alan Hale (235 acting credits at IMDb!) plays Lana's fun-loving and clueless husband, Ed Carlsen. Roscoe Karns provides some wise-cracking relief as Irish McGurn, truck-driving pinball wizard. The script by Jerry Wald is full of snappy one liners like this between Joe and Cassie. He asks, "Do you believe in love at first sight?" She counters with, "It saves a lot of time." Wald later became a producer of some of Hollywood's most memorable flicks including Pride of the Yankees (1945), Mildred Pierce (1945), Key Largo (1948), The Glass Menagerie (1950), etc.

By all means see this for Ida Lupino, who to escape from the typecasting that began with this movie later went on to become one of Hollywood's first woman directors.

3 out of 5 stars Solid melodramatic entertainment which borrows the second half of its plot from Archie Mayo's "Bordertown." .......2007-01-15

Bogart had an opportunity for considerably more self-expression in "They Drive By Night," a film which has remained popular with audiences not so much for its story, which is rather trivial, but for the forceful performances contributed by all its leading players and the good direction by Raoul Walsh...

Raft and Bogart are brothers who wanted to start their own trucking business and eventually succeed, but not before Bogart loses an arm in an accident and Lupino nearly sends Raft to jail for a murder she committed... The trial sequence in which her latent insanity causes her to disintegrate into hysterics on the witness stand is one of the screen's best remembered moments...

Bogart was convincing in his role as he gave way to the frustrations and bitterness of a cripple and then back again to resigned self-satisfaction as he accepted the role life had given him to play out...

4 out of 5 stars Never underestimate the women.......2006-08-13

This film takes on the same material as Thieves' Highway - fruit market, torturing driving hours, occupation hazard, from loan sharks, lack of sleep, dangerous curves on the road, cars falling apart and competition from fellow drivers.

What is different here is that the elder brother Joe Fabrini(George Raft) was fortunate to have a not so secret admirer Mrs. Carson(Ida Lupino) whose uncalculating husband ran a successful truck business. A car wreck might force Joe's younger brother, Paul(Humphrey Bogart), and their only truck out of the road for good, Joe was, however, offered the enviable and stable job of traffic manager at Carson's company. Here ended Joe and Paul's lives with the highway and began their ascent on the social ladder. And a winner takes all.

In a way, the movie depicted the harsh reality faced by independent drivers as well as how obsessed love created hatred and tragedy. While the former was well established, with an element of humour and kindness shown in highway restaurant by the sweet waitress Cassie(Ann Sheridan) and truck drivers who looked out for one another. The latter love tragedy was more dramatic than realistic. That said, Ida Lupino, as the unsatisfied and troubled Mrs. Carson, gave a riveting performance. Even though I could not figure out how a bold, determined and relentless Mrs. Carson could succumb to her own conscience eventually. But the ending had a comical touch which provided Cassie (Ann Sheridan) a chance to prove that she not only had a lovable and adorable face, she had brains!

66 years after its release, I heard this film saw the last of Humphrey Bogart as a character actor. Back then, this was Ida Lupino's break that won her a 7-year studio contract. She later directed episodes of more than 20 TV series such as The Untouchables, Gilligan's Island, Bewitched and The Ghost & Mrs. Muir.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, And Hard To Classify.......2006-04-25

Not much action here for a "film noir" and really more of a melodrama than a crime story, but I still like this because the story's decent and it features a top-flight cast of actors who are usually fun to watch.

That cast includes George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart and Gale Page. My favorite of the group - in this film, at least - is Sheridan, a wise-cracking waitress. Raft and Bogart are truck drivers and Lupino plays the boss' wife. In here, the two women are more interesting than the men, which says a lot considering its Raft and Bogart.

Sheridan not only is easy on the eyes but delivers some great film-noir-type lines. Unfortunately, the edge is taken off her once she leave the diner and hitches a ride with Raft to Los Angeles. Bogart plays more of a low-key family man whose wife (Page) is the nice- looking, wholesome type. This is one of the last movies Bogart made before he became a star. Hence, he gets fourth billing in here. Lupino is very good as the vicious scorned woman, a role she found herself playing in a number of films.

As mentioned above, I'm not really sure how one would classify this film since there is humor, film noir, soap opera, straight drama and romance all in it. The combination makes the film interesting and recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The doors made me do it!.......2005-07-17

Well, this was different. THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT (1940) begins, rather unusually, as a story of the Fabrini brothers Joe (George Raft), and younger brother Paul (Humphrey Bogart). It tells the exciting story of the life of independent truckers. See them drink cup after cup of coffee, play game after game of pinball, and make pass after pass at the pretty waitress (Ann Sheridan as Cassie) in the roadside diner. Directed by the accomplished and usually brilliant action director Raoul Walsh, the first half of THEY DRIVE is an incredibly slow-starting action movie. You can, I suppose, squeeze just so much drama out of things when the biggest threat is drowsiness and the biggest enemy is a little fellow trying to collect on a note for the Fabrini truck. Bogart and Raft have good rapport - they look and act enough like brothers - and Walsh was in his element with tough loving men and tough talking women, but this one really takes its time before it develops any forward momentum.

Fortunately, THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT is hijacked at the midpoint by Ida Lupino, who proceeds to steal the movie from everyone else for the duration. Lupino plays Lana Carlsen, wife of big Ed Carlsen (Alan Hale), who, through circumstances best left unspoken, finds himself in a position to offer Joe a job with his trucking company. Big Ed Carlsen, in the best tradition of crime thriller husbands, is oblivious to the, er, tension between friend Joe and wife Lana. Ed Carlsen is one of those types who talks too loud, drinks too much, and laughs too hard at his own jokes. If you look hard enough you can usually see vultures circling high in the background the first time these guys show up in a movie. Anyway, things pick up considerably when the movie changes into its femme fatale clothes. The movie belongs to Lupino, who chews enough scenery to fill someone twice her size. What the heck, though. The part calls for it, and Lupino is every bit as good as Bette Davis would have been.

The print is in very good condition. Besides a theatrical trailer, the disk also includes a ten-minute special entitled `Divided Highway: The Story of They Drive by Night', a brief, okay introduction to the movie. Better yet is the 19-minute `Swingtime in the Movies,' a color Vitaphone short starring Fritz Feld as the autocratic, vaguely Prussian director Mr. Nitvitch. I've seen one other Nitvitch short, and they seem designed to parody directors, showcase some young actors, fill out a playbill, and show off Warner Brothers stars in the studio commissary or on the set. The youngsters in this one are Kathryn Kane and John Carroll, who Nitvitch is humorously directing in a musical western. The cameos include Pat O'Brien, Humphrey Bogart, Marie Windsor, and John Garfield.

      5 out of 5 stars Bad movie...but in a good way.......2007-04-02

Ok...this movie was never going to win any awards. And it's not even good. But for a b-movie film buff like myself...it's a great film! It is certainly a film with character. The only thing that the film has going for it is Piper Laurie. She's awesome as Ruby! The movie itself is trying to be like the movie "the Exorcist," but is unsuccessful at it. This version is the good version. There was a badly edited version with a lot of cuts and most of the violence taken out. You won't like this film if you are not into b-movies. but if you are...it's a treat!

4 out of 5 stars COOL THO NEGLECTED HORROR CLASSIC.......2007-01-09

What makes a horror film a classic? What ingredients does one need to include to make such a film to deserve a praise word as 'classic'? In 'Ruby', a highly ignored film from the 70's is called a classic for it's sheer nerve in being one of the earliest 'body count' films that actually had a story to tell without giving the audience a handful of meaningless murders to people we didn't care for.
At the time of the film's release, it was relegated to the Drive-In circuit, and a few lesser 'hard top' theaters. I do remember a few critics trying to mention that 'Ruby' was an 'Exorcist' rip-off, but if that was the case, why didn't the film succeed? Since the 'Exorcist' was such a big hit, why didn't a copy cat film make money?
Sadly, it's been 30 years since this film's release, and finally making it's appearance on DVD, i can understand why at times the film did not succeed.
      Here's why.
Following Curtis Harrington's career since 'What's The Matter With Helen?", Harrington's output was not as consistant as other capable directors, who did quite well in presenting good-taste horror films that didn't insult our intelligence.
Harrington, a man who was very detail-oriented wanted to present a legitimate story of a woman, who has a child who's soul is suddenly 'taken-over' by a former b/f that was killed while the woman was pregnant. The child seems 'possessed', but is never fully explained.
The film is at times very lavishly photographed, but there are a few scenes that look as if were filmed quickly, and is not fluid.
The ending of course was NOT directed by Harrington. The ending was a 'tack on' by the producers of the film, who wanted a different ending that included a skeleton and a woman who doubled for Laurie. The actual ending was for Laurie's character to live in torment for her previous actions, but will have a daughter who is no longer possessed, and will live a normal life. A happy ending actually.
What makes this film a classic? The acting.
Piper Laurie, an actress who has not been fully utilized throughout her career, but has made a mark on every film she appears in.
Her role in 'Carrie' is one of marvel, and is just a small slice of how powerful she is as an actress.
Stuart Whitman, somewhat of a tv-movie/tv-show actor is another fine performance.
Overall, the set pieces to the killings of each person in the film was rather unique, in an 'Omen' kind of way, where they perished in different ways, or, called the 'creative death'.
Harrington always seemed to get the best performance out of his actors, be it James Caan, Debbie Reynolds, the late Shelley Winters, Dennis Hopper, or Piper Laurie.
I never thought of this film as an 'Exocist' rip off. This film has redeeming qualities all on it's own without any excess to the former hit. With great regret, this film did not receive a large distribution on it's initial run, and did not make it's production costs back until later when it was tagged second bill with other horror films at drive-in's.
It is a good film, with good acting, and very imaginative set pieces. For the most part it is well photographed, but at times will see a difference in quality that is not the fault of the trasfer from celluloid to DVD, it is just the way it was presented.

      2 out of 5 stars Kinda Silly.......2006-01-09

This movie was watchable, and succesful at the box office but not scary in the least. Piper was great in this film. In the special features I heard the director of this film speak of The Blair Witch Project, stating "it must be good markenting because he sees nothing scary about the arrangment of some sticks."
Well I would say to him, the thing that was scary to some people about the Blair Witch was what you don't see, not the sticks it is not the gore and blood because there isn't much of that in Blair Witch. I would go on to say that I see nothing scary about a woman shaking on a bed especially after a movie called the Exorcist already did that. I would also say I see nothing scary about a cheap looking skeleton in the water grabbing a woman. 2 Stars for effort

1 out of 5 stars 0.5 STARS: There was some potential here, but too many boring scenes........2005-11-21

"Ruby" is one of those movies that fails to sustain any momentum. There are a couple of genuinely creepy scenes, but the movie fails to hold up because it is put together so poorly. The creators of Ruby threw a couple of creepy scenes involving that young girl Leslie and surrounded it with what seemed like an endless amount of scenes of Ruby walking around acting like an angry lady who is sorry that she is getting over the hill? Don't get me wrong, I think Piper Laurie is a great actress, but the movie fails to sustain any momentum as a horror movie because of too many boring scenes. Also, the acting was rather wooden overall and that hurts "Ruby" as well. "Ruby" could have been better than it was, but that's not saying much because as it is, I would not be able to sleep at night if I gave this movie more than one star...0.5 STARS is the Horrorman's official rating to be exact, and I believe that is generous assessment.

3 out of 5 stars Forgotten film re-released...is it worth remembering?.......2005-11-01

"Ruby" was quite an odd film to come out in the middle of the late 1970's period - it's hard to categorise and doesn't really have any identifiable style or genre in the horror marketplace...it just seems to be sitting there. The story centres around the title character of Ruby, a troubled woman still coming to terms with the death of her lover in the distant past. She has a mute daughter who she has brought up with as little personal contact as possible, because of the painful resemblance to the dead man. But new trouble brews when Ruby's friends and colleagues start to die in strange ways...is a secret from the past coming back to haunt them all?

No-one ever raves about this film, and few make claims on it to be a cult classic. This would probably suggest it isn't very good, and I'd be lying if I recommended it as successful and effective, because it fails mostly to be either of those. However I have a sneaking fondness for it, but I can't really put my finger on what's actually that good about it. Probably the biggest attraction is Piper Laurie's performance as Ruby. Piper Laurie is always fun to watch, and she's especially good as the hard edged, alcoholic and slightly unbalanced Ruby. That aside, the rest of the casting is pretty good too. A word must also go out for the music - the prologue of the film is set in the 1930's, and the soundtrack for the flashback has a great smoky bar-room jazz music to it. Plus there's even a chance to hear Piper Laurie singing as the sole recording from Ruby's short-lived musical career gets played at one point. The song - "Easy...like blowing smoke rings round the moon", it goes - sounds absoloutely wonderful, plus the same melody appears throughout the film in different instrumental reprises, and then again at the very end, completely reworked as the closing theme. I love films that make up cod period music, and, better still, use one musical motif to such good effect throughout. So this is probably my main reason for admiring this movie so much.

Sadly, it's lacking in other areas. The murders are very low key and lacklustre. I'm not really a gorehound, but at the time of the film's release, the gore market was just starting to appear (this flim came out just after the blood-soaked "Carrie") and "Ruby" must surely have been too mild to appeal to horror fans, which probably led to its luke-warm performance at the time. And as long as we're talking about "Carrie", it's also pretty obvious that "Ruby" was palmed off at the time as something in the same vein - a girl's name as the title, featuring Piper Laurie, hot on the heels of her fantastic appearance in the former film as Carrie's mother, and lastly, the sub-plot involving Ruby's daughter, Lesley, who, while not contributing anything of note for much of the running time, pops up every now and then exhibiting signs of possession and mysterious powers. But despite the "Carrie"-style marketing, the scenes with Lesley actually borrow heavily from "The Exorcist". This is by far the biggest failing of the film. The scenes of Lesley thrashing around on her bed and acting possessed really look like second-hand wannabe shots from that classic, and it throws the general tone of the film out totally. Making this possession/pyschic powers plot happen to a minor characater instead of the title character (no supernatural affliction ever assails Ruby herself) makes it seem as though this apsect has been shoe-horned in from a completely different film. Plus, the daughter is so under-written as a character that it renders her just not interesting enough to carry this element effectively.

Essentially, then, I have now decided that "Ruby" is a ghost story, with revenge from beyond the grave providing the required chills and thrills. There is a certain "who-dunnit and why" mystery to be solved along the way, and there are a few fun murders. Plus the ending....you may read that the shock ending (retained in the VCI DVD) was added against the directors wishes...but I love it! I found it effective and am glad it's been left in. In my view - stop reading you have not seen the ending - being re-united with your dead lover does not always mean you simply slip across some astral plane, hand in hand together, and Ruby finds that the re-union she dreamed about for so long comes via a rather more uncomfortable method than she would have liked. So - against all other opinions - the end of the film is another one of my personal highlights.

Definitely re-watcheable - I always seem to forget the plot revelations between viewings - and at a good price. Try it. But don't expect to add a new classic to your DVD shelf.
