Some movies can only be described as delicious. In Babette's Feast, a woman flees the French civil war and lands in a small seacoast village in Denmark, where she comes to work for two spinsters, devout daughters of a puritan minister. After many years, Babette unexpectedly wins a lottery, and decides to create a real French dinner--which leads the sisters to fear for their souls. Joining them for the meal will be a Danish general who, as a young soldier, courted one of the sisters, but she turned him away because of her religion. The village elders all resolve not to enjoy the meal, but can their moral fiber resist the sensual pleasure of Babette's cooking? Babette's Feast deservedly won the 1987 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This lovely movie is impeccably simple, yet its slender narrative contains a wealth of humor, melancholy, and hope. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Artistic, sensual and sacred passions unite in Babette's Feast. Written and directed by Gabriel Axel, from a short story by Out of Africa's Isak Dinesen, this Oscar(r)-winning*film offers "an irresistible mixture of dry wit and robust humanity" (Newsweek). Onthe desolate coast of Denmark live Martina and Philippa, the beautiful daughters of a devout clergyman who preaches salvation through self-denial. Both girls sacrifice youthful passion to faith and duty, and even many years after their father's death, they keep his austere teachings alive among thetownspeople. But with the arrival of Babette, a mysterious refugee from France's civil war, life for the sisters and their tiny hamlet begins to change. Soon, Babette has convinced them to try something truly outrageousa gourmet French meal! Her feast, of course, scandalizes the local elders. Just who is this strangely talented Babette, who has terrified this pious town with the prospect of losing their souls for enjoying too much earthly pleasure? *1987: Foreign Language Film

5 out of 5 stars savor it..........2007-06-22

for anyone desiring to see what the difference between a Hollywood film and a foreign film is, this is the one to watch. Babette's Feast is a scrumptious delight. A simple story about a mysterious French woman who comes to the coast of Denmark and works for 14 years as a cook to two pious Danish sisters. The story slowly unravels like a great masterpiece and when the French cook wins a lottery all the pieces come together to reveal a gorgeous mosaic of humanity. Full of simplicity, humor, and insight to the human condition. Simple, funny, gorgeous and delightfully delicious.

5 out of 5 stars full and overflowing.......2007-06-14

The same gentle irony that Karen Blixen brought to the interplay of faith and human experience in OUT OF AFRICA is to be observed in full flower in this delightfully quirky film adaptation of her short story called BABETTE'S FEAST. Blixen found the French fathers in Kenya a bit rigid and self-interested, yet she expressed this with kindness and patience. She does the same here with her Lutheran Danes.

The romantic exuberance of the French servant-woman Babette as she brings to the island village that is her refuge the sensuality of a lavish feast does not reduce the disciplined and selfless orthodoxy of the Lutheran sect to ridicule. Rather, there is room for a certain conversion in *both* directions, a cross-pollenation that Blixen and her cinematic interpreters allow themselves to relish.

Blixen left us a great story. It has been made into a memorable film that belongs on the 'keeper' shelf of viewers who love a story.

BABETTE'S FEAST is a full plate for the heart.

5 out of 5 stars A Feast for Your Eyes, and Your Heart........2007-06-14

This movie is a masterpiece. Babette's Feast shows the story of love for: God, food, family, friends, and growth. It's literally a feast for your eyes, and your heart. Bravo!

I first watched this movie with the subtitles. I loved it so much, I had to watch it again in dubbed English.

5 out of 5 stars Babetts Feast is WONDERFUL!.......2007-05-14

I do believe this is the most touching film's to come from Scandnavia in many years....Beautiful in it's simplicity and story line...Although it is sub-titled the impact of the story was perfectly conveyed by the actors and was heart warming....It has become special to me and my family as I am Swedish-American and very proud of my heritage. thankyou

5 out of 5 stars Babette's Feast.......2007-05-05

The feast is the total antithesis of what the first part of the movie isn't. The feast is phenomenal - I've played it over and over. I think it helps to love food and cooking though. That movie got me to try and like - Turtle soup!

It seemed like a good idea in 1973: a musical scored by Donovan about the life and times of St. Francis of Assisi, the passionate ascetic who expressed love for God by loving nature. But the finished product was something else. Filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli (Endless Love) makes a decorous effort at communicating the ideals of Francis and even tweaking the character toward flower-power relevance. But the result is feel-good fluff, a boring movie that doesn't penetrate its subject as much as reinvent him toward a modern bias. Graham Faulkner is entirely forgettable in the lead, and Donovan's songs on this project aren't exactly first-rate, either. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Sublime.......2007-06-27

If you have ever been believed that butterflies glide and swoop with thoughts of pure delight, or that the souls of men may indeed soar like birds delighting in the freedom air and sun, then this is a film for you. A rarity among the movie making gendre, for there is no spin, no contradictory message to fog the moral compass of the soul. This is just the true story of an exceptional man, a rebel against the values that enslave the thoughts, which are but chains of misery, of present day as with 13th century Italy, masterfully told by one of the greatest director of all time. A film to be cherished on high as with the rare likes of "A Man for All Seasons." And one that I can never tire of as a result of its profundity.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Wisdom.......2007-05-13

This is by far one of my favourite movies of all time and is a must watch for just about everyone on the planet. It is a great rendision of St. Francis. If you watch this movie and don't like it, then you need to watch it again and open your heart and eyes to love because you missed the point the first time. Whether or not this is the best picture about St. Francis does not matter. It's the movie it'self that draws on an open heart concept. Don't miss this film. I highly recommend buying this one for anyones collection.

5 out of 5 stars Brother Sun, Sister Moon: Maybe their is Hope!.......2007-05-12

I am not a religious person nor do I beleive in life after death. That being said, seeing Brother Sun Sister Moon gives me hope in the human being in that the message behind of it all is: what ever people may say on you or however you are judge, just fallow the path you think is yours.
It might be an odd review, but the rest you must see; its a Masterwork.
The scenes are breathtaking and the actors are beautiful. The music and songs will take you elswhere, and that is precious. If possible: THREE thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Canticle Reflects St. Francis.......2007-03-22

Franco Zefferelli's biography of St. Francis, `Brother Sun and Sister Moon,' is a bona fide masterpiece. The cinematography--thanks partly to Ennio Guarnieno--unfolds kaleidoscopically. The editing and camera angles are sheer perfection. Watching the beauty unfold in every scene, village and landscape have the glory as if they were from Francis's own eyes. Created in 1972, Zefferelli draws from an audience during the waning years of the hippie era. Nevertheless, his implementation of an icon classic is one of the few figures of Catholicism to thrive during that time. (Unless you want to qualify John XXIII, but he provided less hippie appeal.) `Brother...' is sensual without being disrespectful and enjoyable without becoming out of context. The architecture and garments never forget that Francis came from medieval times--even if the pageantry, too, imitates a peacock's myriad of colors. Included in the story is a rather harsh rendering of ecclesiastical authority. (G.K. Chesterton, in his biography of Francis, maintains that upon their meeting, Francis was the big man and the pope was the small man, but the small man was needed. Francis restored a gospel simplicity to a church that was as damaged as the actual one he had to reassemble, but the pope had prudent points to make.) Francis's father and the local bishop bring enough conflict to provide a plot. Anyway, theology aside, there isn't much to argue about in this rendering. Besides Alec Guinness doesn't disappoint as the pope. Speaking of acting, Graham Faulkner is a dead-ringer in looks and interpretation for the troubadour of God and nature. And "Sister Moon," Claire (Judy Bowner)--if you will--is radiant, even if she seems misplaced--more like a runner-up to play Juliet. Every aspect of Francis is represented, and, although, like the rest of us, he led an episodic life, the threads are woven as seamlessly as one of his father's garments. Francis's life comes off like a glistening mosaic in movie form. Zefferelli's treatment of Francis walks on water. Never plodding nor resorting to spiritual fast food, the pace is as flawless as everything else. How they manage to use Donovan's original soundtrack and a "Gloria" that never become tongue-in-cheek or embarrassing is a miracle in itself. (Donovan was a perfect choice for exhuding the saint's simplicity.) Florid without being vapid, timely without seeming dated, 'Brother Sun and Sister Moon' is a celebration of Francis's life. Like his rendering of 'Romeo and Juliet,' `Brother Sun and Sister Moon' deserves to be a Zefferelli classic.

Todd Haynes, ever unpredictable, follows up his experimental trilogy Poison and his restrained Safe with this flamboyant study in glam rock through the kaleidoscopic lens of Citizen Kane. Christian Bale plays Arthur Stuart, a reporter sent to investigate the legend of rock legend and bisexual pop icon Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as a not-so-thinly veiled David Bowie), who disappeared a decade ago after staging his own mock assassination. But Arthur is flooded with memories of his own adolescence as he interviews Slade's friends and business associates, peeling back the layer of makeup and spangles that was the model of rebellion for a generation of middle-class British kids and discovering a hollow center. Ewan McGregor almost steals the film as the punk pioneer Curt Wild (equal parts Iggy Pop and Kurt Cobain), the genuine article to Slade's calculated, coifed image of glitter stardom. Haynes's film lacks nothing in capturing the flamboyance and spectacle of the era with flashy filmmaking and kitschy costumes, and if the plot seems lost in the preening and visual fireworks, perhaps that's the point: behind the façades and manufactured fronts is nothing but glitter, energy, and a beat. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars The power of music and presence.......2007-05-29

I really liked this movie for the reason being that what the power of music and a musician can bring. If the musician is dressing a certain way, so is the public. If it is "ok" for the musician to be gay or bi, it is for the public too. What ever is in "style" the public relates. I know that some of you are probably thinking that this is a dream world that I am writing about, but look at society today. Let's take the red ribbon that the gay community started for AIDS awareness. What other ribbons came from it? ie, yellow, pink and others. What was once taboo is now mainstream. I also want to add that the main characters of this movie should be commended for their acting skills and "believability" in any character that they play. They both have tremendous acting skills and beautiful bodies. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes the "glam rock" era.

4 out of 5 stars Glitter and Glam.......2007-05-26

"Velvet Goldmine"

Glitter and Glam

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Velvet Goldmine" is impressive in the way it includes Oscar Wilde, his philosophies about art and his fascination with music. Even though Wilde is not a character in the film his presence is felt throughout. He is referenced throughout.
Curt is both a composite of Iggy Pop and Wilde--he is an artist as he creates music and Brian Slade is Dorian Gray. He throws his entire persona out there and into his music and traps himself into his own being. Because he has trapped himself, he leaves no room for growth. When he is pseudo-shot, he is arranging his own future. His sham death liberates him and secures him a place in history. He was controversial and bared all in his work and this is what deprived him of longevity. His popularity undoubtedly would have paled and he eventually would be forgotten. If he had changed, everything about him would have changed and he would be regarded as having sold out. By inaugurating his death, he guarantees himself an eternity.
This is not just a film--it is an experience. "Velvet Goldmine" has a sense of erotic innocence and therefore becomes a triumphant motion picture. It explores the effect of glam and the way it influenced the world view toward homosexuality.
There were two instances of a vivid evocation of gay life. The first is when the narrator is watching Slade on TV and he announces that he is a homosexual. The narrator fantasizes about pointing to the TV in front of his parents and saying "That's me". The second comes when the narrator buys his first Brian Slade album and a magazine with an article about Slade. He uses them as material to masturbate over.
The glam rockers changed the world when they brought to the world images that had been unthinkable images at that time. By doing so they eased life for gay men--they created a language that made it easier to explain ourselves to others. Their music can hardly be separated from the gay aspects of it.
The movie is stunning to watch and the imagery stays long after the movie is over. Sure, it is a surreal view of glam rock but so what? It is entertainment. It may be over the top and campy and excessive but it works beautifully.

4 out of 5 stars jonathan ryhs meyer...ewan mcgregor...wow.......2007-04-14

this movie was really good. I was pleasantly pleased when I bought this movie on a whim and was given great results.
The two leading male characters did a great job. Not to mention Christian Bale as well. It was all based on his memories and the memories of jonathan ryhs meyer's character wife telling of the story. I cant remember names...im so bad at that. I watched it awhile ago...sorry!!
its a really good movie...you should check it out. rent before to be safe, in case its not your style of movie.
i loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Brian Slade: Man is least himself when he talks in his own person... Give him a mask and he'll tell you the truth., .......2007-04-11

The year is 1984 and it's been 10 years since glam-rock superstar Brian Slade (Meyers) faked his own death and vanished from the spotlight. Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale), an investigative reporter, interviews the friends and business associates of the ex-pop icon trying to find out what lays behind the glitter make-up, flamboyance, outrage, and the intoxicating freedom of the sexual revolution. While uncovering the truth about disappearing star, Arthur will come to terms with his own past.

This movie is brilliant, wild (e), beautiful, exotic, as the rock movement it depicts and in its best moments (which are plenty) it has achieved the result that the praised to the high heaven "Moulin Rouge!" could only dream about. VG is lurid, is dreamlike, is surreal and it recreates perfectly the decadent world of 1970 Glam Rock with its androgynous male rock stars who looked like the strange and exotic flowers of faraway worlds, with its nostalgia and obsession, glitter and psychedelic colors, the world where Oscar Wilde whose name has been mentioned more than once would've felt at home.

The film's visual palette is incredible, the costumes are jaw-dropping, the music and singing simply mesmerize. Ewan McGregor's acting and courage (Curt Wild, the punk-rock pioneer who looked in the movie very much like another Curt) was among the most memorable along with a relative newcomer Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Brian Slade and incredible Toni Collette as Brian's American wife Mandy. While certainly not everyone's cup of tea due to many scenes with homosexuality, drugs, and full frontal nudity, the movie deserves to be seen for the successful recreation of the world of glam and glitter rock, "elegant crowds... amid sumptuous ornamentation".

2 out of 5 stars I'd like to thank..........2007-03-12

This film owes a lot to Roger Daltry and the Who, Jim Morrison and the Doors, Ken Russell, and even Orson Welles. There is nothing original about this -- derivitive is too much of a compliment. Yes, three of the four leads do a fine job -- I exempt Bale -- Toni Collette is fine as always, but otherwise -- don't waste your time.

In need of some good old-fashioned gore? You'll find it by the bucketload in the low-budget monsterfest Feast, which arrives on DVD in an even bloodier unrated edition. The winning entry in the third season of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's reality series/talent contest Project Greenlight (Wes Craven is also on board as an advisor/producer), Feast is a wall-to-wall splatterthon that operates on an agreeably simple premise: A crew of motley characters is trapped in a remote location (in this case, a desert bar) by ravenous, flesh-eating monsters (here, a quartet of toothy and astoundingly fecund humanoids). The result? Lots of gruesome deaths and plenty of manic action, delivered with kinetic style by first-time feature director John Gulager. Not everything about Feast works--Gulager's drive is thwarted by the unfocused script, which favors smarmy dialogue over substance--but the effects are impressive, given the film's price tag, and the cast is incredibly game for the gory goings-on, with Krista Allen (Entourage), Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), Balthazar Getty (Alias), and Gulager's father, veteran actor Clu Gulager, among the stand-outs. The DVD includes a smattering of outtakes and deleted scenes (including an alternate ending); commentary by Gulager, the screenwriters, and two of the film's numerous producers; and a making-of featurette, which Project Greenlight viewers should find interesting solely for producers Chris Moore and Michael Leahy's attitudes towards Gulager (both were a hair's breath away from firing him throughout the production, but here, amusingly suggest unconditional support). -- Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Above average sci-fi horror comedy.......2007-07-05

Feast is an enjoyable sci-fi horror comedy romp. It is especially enjoyable considering the extremely low budget and use of a first-time director. The film features plenty of gore and a few funny lines. In addition, there are several babes to look at, inc. the gorgeous Krista Allen.

I'm not a big fan of all the super quick editing, but that is a popular trend, unfortunately.

A real good genre film that looks nice on HD DVD. The alternate audio lacks very much in the way of interesting insights about the film -- mostly there are like 5 guys being silly and joking around. The extras do feature some interesting clips about the competition that led to this film.

4 out of 5 stars good fast pasced fun, .......2007-06-18

This one didnt spend much time on the big screen but is a great one for your collection.. gets off to a fast start, similar to Dusk till Dawn, but more realistic..set in a bar, you never get tired of being there due to good acting and quick witted dialog.

5 out of 5 stars Great B Horror flick.......2007-06-17

This horror film has both the "scarey" and the "humorous" mixed all into one. What I found most funny is the monster's babies mate and then they eat what they have mated with. I just about fell off my chair laughing at this one. It also has a very scarey side and the feeling of being "trapped" in this film. Yes, there is alot of gore, the monsters look very good and the acting was excellent for this B horror flick. I recommend anyone that loves horror movies with a little humor.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, pretty damn good!.......2007-06-12

Funny, gorey as hell with beautiful women and non stop action! Worth the buy, difinetly one to see again.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated horror movie.......2007-05-23

I was pleasantly surprised by "Feast." After seeing a few episodes of "Project Greenlight," I expected this movie to be a mess. But it succeeds as an enthusiastic horror movie despite (or perhaps because of) the severe lack of money and time available, and the constant presence of "Project Greenlight" camera crews. Gulager put together a product that is definitely a B movie, but one that's head and shoulders above much higher-budgeted studio horror fare. It helps that the script, while imperfect, has some great moments, and that the actors are generally at least competent.

One real virtue of "Feast" is that it just keeps moving. At 85 minutes, you don't have time to stop and think about the plot holes too much. It's a rocket on rails from start to finish. One way "Feast" keeps moving is the unique way in which we "meet the meat." Some viewers will hate it. I liked it, myself; but that's purely a matter of taste. The first few minutes are entertaining and get a lot of the exposition out of the way fast.

"Feast" is at least worth a rent by horror fans.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate Production.......2007-05-20

I was just introduced to this series and am amazed and delighted at the experience. British productions just really know how to do it right. The acting is superb, the visuals are outstanding, the story a wonderful mixture of brash old english humor, gruff country attitude and delightful excentricities. I can't say enough good about it. A highly recommended series. I want to see them all now.

5 out of 5 stars The best...bar none...TV show in the world.......2007-03-21

It is a fact almost universally acknowledged that the movie or TV adaptation of a book is always dissapointing. Possibly, people just don't like to have their conceptions of a book or series shaken by someone else's interpretation of it. Not to be scoffed at as well is Hollywood's ineptitude (see the Hollywood production of Pride and Prejudice, 2005.) Regardless of what causes it, it seems to run rampant in most film adaptations of books. All Creatures Great and Small, however, breaks all the rules. The BBC takes Herriot's masterpiece and perfects it, to create what I believe to be the best television series in the world. The only, and I mean ONLY, problem I have ever had with All Creatures Great and Small is the fact that the slightly quirky cases the dvd's come in break easily. A pull-out/fold-out setup would definitely have been better. Anyway, I highly reccommend the TV show and the books because they are the exceptions to the rule.

5 out of 5 stars Song.......2007-03-11

I love this series! I was introduced to it about 2 years ago and love it. Does anyone know what the name of the song is on the dvd menu? I've seen and heard the theme song on the Internet, but never this one on the dvd menu.

4 out of 5 stars mixed.......2007-03-08

I love this series. The case, holding 4 CDs, was falling apart. The condition of the CDs was ok. There were some spots that would 'freeze' but after I had played the CDs a few times that stopped.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-01-12

James Herriot's autobiographical novels are amongst my favorite reads. His casual language style and attention to detail supercharge the imagination with images of his beloved Yorkshire Dales and their inhabitants, both human and animal.

Very rarely will television or film come close to equaling the original source, but here they did. Filming on location, with talented character actors and beautiful artistic production, you will believe you are looking back in time to the 1930s.

The series stars Christopher Timothy as James Herriot. Two actors played the character, in films, before this series - neither came close to becoming Herriot, like Timothy did.

Supporting Timothy is the excellent Robert Hardy as Siegfried. Robert Hardy is so perfect in this role that you will be disappointed if you ever see the film version where the role was played by none other than Sir Anthony Hopkins.

The series acquires an excellent authenticity in the real animal scenes, such as birthing lambs.

If you're ever in England, be sure to visit Thirsk and Askrigg (the former is the real town that Darrowby is based on and the latter is the quaint village they filmed the series in).

Customer Reviews:

Description

As The Virgin Queen begins, a young Elizabeth is imprisoned in the Tower of London by Queen Mary, charged with conspiracy and treason. Both women are daughters of the ruthless and oft-married Henry VIII, who plunged England into turmoil by breaking with the Roman Catholic Church. Mary wants to reunite with Rome, while Elizabeth is determined to stand by her Protestant faith--a potentially fatal choice. But Elizabeth's life takes an unexpected turn when Mary dies, leaving no heir to the throne. As the new queen, Elizabeth discovers the harsh realities of ruling a religiously divided nation and must learn to outwit her enemies and charm those who conspire to their own ends.

Soon under pressure to secure a politically advantageous marriage, the coquettish Elizabeth rejects a string of eligible royal bachelors from abroad, openly preferring the burning affections of her childhood playmate, the athletic, handsome--and married--Robert Dudley. But is she toying with him as she is with her other suitors?

Starring Anne-Marie Duff (The Aristocrats, The Magdalene Sisters) as the shrewd and captivating queen who defended her throne amidst an atmosphere of plotting and intrigue, torture and murder, The Virgin Queen is a riveting drama that explores the fascinating 44-year reign of Elizabeth I.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The most true movie I have seen.......2007-05-15

I have watched several movies and read several books on Queen Elizabeth and this is by far the most accurate movie available. Although I love all movies about Queen Elizabeth I have found this one to be the most historicaly correct.

5 out of 5 stars Elizabeth Queen of England.......2007-05-13

I enjoyed the story very much. Besides being a fasinating story, I felt that it also was historically accurate. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful to watch and watch again..........2007-04-10

Five stars. And five stars to the reviewer "Buck Bauer" whose review pointed me to Amazon.co.uk as a source for the soundtrack. It seems that folks either love or hate the music. I ADORE it and am thrilled to have finally obtained a copy. I was really struggling with the lyrics of what I believe is the first song in the movie. On watching the Helen Mirren version of Elizabeth I on HBO I connected the lyrics to the poem by Elizabeth I "On Monsieur's Departure"

It's hardly worth comparing the various portrayals of Elizabeth I. All versions are interesting and stand on their own. And I agree with another viewer who feels that Tilda Swinton (outstanding in "Orlando" - another film with a haunting soundtrack) would perhaps make the best Elizabeth I yet.

5 out of 5 stars Trust me.......2007-04-09

I wrote up a rather length and detailed review of this excellent series and then the computer crashed. Divine intervention!?

Suffice it to say that this is a marvelous drama for both new and old fans of the English history genre. Anne Marie Duff and a stellar supporting cast (Tom Hardy and the magnetic Derek Riddell deserve special recognition) make it even more compelling than the celebrity-driven versions more well known. Forgive some erratic direction, phony looking glue-on facial hair, Essex's hyped up Oedipal complex and frequently too on-the-nose dialogue and just enjoy the performances, production values and even soundtrack. While it curious that this UK-filmed miniseries seems strangely devoid of any rain maybe Gloriana was so named for the weather!), it is a first rate work well worth the 4 hours' viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Sparks flying!.......2007-04-05

I really enjoyed this telling of Elizabeth I's reign. Though the crowd scenes were often sparse of crowds, i thought the acting great, the costumes amazing, and the details and passing of time fairly accurate. However, the best part of the miniseries were the smoldering sparks between Elizabeth (Duffy) and Robert Dudley (Hardy). I really enjoyed watching this update to the Elizabeth story.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Brit series.......2007-02-08

Set in preWWII Yorkshire, this is the continuation of a series that generated 87 (!) episodes and three specials, and came back after an 8 year hiatus. If you are into action sequences and special effects, this is not a series for you, but if you enjoy beautiful scenery, fine acting, and are not troubled by the pace of a different age, these are the most satisfying examples of story-telling about real people and their animals. There are no scenes of existential ponderings, but the problems faced by the veterinarians of the day were not trivial, since livelihoods could depend on proper treatment. The attitude of these characters toward their vocation, and the prevailing disquiet in Europe as the war clouds mount, are about the only serious issues treated here, and I for one, found this to be balm for a viewer otherwise inundated with the crime, quiz and situation comedy shows of the time.

Though this be heresy, I enjoyed the series more than I enjoyed reading the books, which are not presented linearly in time, but as a series of disconnected episodes. There are also dozens of scenes in which the author does not appear and cannot have been a witness, so the mechanism for conveying this in the books is much less natural than in the teleplay. Having seen nearly every episode, the consistency of the cast and the presentation are a tribute to the painstaking production values, since there were numerous personnel changes behind the scenes (as well as the death of one cast member) over the long life of this production.

This series was transferred from 1978 era film, so I noticed a slightly greenish hue to shadows, blacks and lighting blurs that I noticed when I saw them originally (ca 1979-80). These were broadcast on Sunday evenings on PBS in my area, and they filled the time slot where Disney and Sullivan had held sway for many years. These are perfect for family viewing UNLESS you are 1) squeamish about seeing actors with their arms up a cow's backside, or 2) bothered by alcohol consumption. A character rarely enters the drawing room without a gin, whisky or sherry being poured, and many scenes are in pubs. This seemed perfectly natural to me, but I had seen plenty of period British TV by then. These are based on memoirs and the author was on hand to correct anything wrong, so I am happy that the series was not "Disney-fied," and such scenes are proof (no pun intended). I cannot comment on the accuracy of the set decoration but I assume that it is scrupulous, since this is all within living memory of many of the participants. Except for the automobiles and brief references in dialogue, the time setting for this series would be difficult to determine; costumes would not look out of place on the streets of these villages today (maybe the occasional "plus-fours" would raise some eyebrows today). This gives this particular 2nd series a timeless quality. The illusion that you are in homes and villages (as opposed to studios and "location" shots) was perfect for this viewer, especially the natural lighting.

This series does not carry the angst of the postwar episodes, but it does feature some of the most irritating clientele, as embodied by Mr Dimsdale and Miss Dooley. Mrs Pumphrey and Tricky Woo are back, and the explosive Robert Hardy is always fun to contrast against the otherwise subdued cast members. Sound quality is acceptable, but the 'Dales accent may be incomprehensible to some viewers and there are no captions, so the use of actors (and non-actors) with true Northern English accents can be a challenge for some ears. Fortunately the context is so clear that it seldom interferes with enjoyment.

If you love this series as much as I did, you will want to get "James Herriot's Yorkshire," a walking and driving tour with Christopher Timothy, which was produced just after Herriot's death, as well as the longer "specials" (three) that spun from the show.

5 out of 5 stars All Creature Great&Small vol.2.......2007-01-16

A tv show based on James Herriot's book's. Takes place at the english countryside. We are let in on Herriot's life and challenge's. His work for vet.Farnon-a funny character, you never now where you have him.And of course Farnon's brother,Tristan-always on the lookout for a fag and a pint. And a break... All creatures Great&Small is an absolute pleasure to watch! I recomend it dearly!

5 out of 5 stars All Creatures Great & Small .......2006-07-05

The series is heart warming and fun; I highly reccommend it.

5 out of 5 stars All Creatures - Series 2.......2006-03-24

A lovely view into a by-gone world. It's pleasant, interesting, sometimes funny, sometimes touching. It's realistic. Although not excessively graphic, if you have a very delicate stomach you might not want to watch some segments while you're eating.

1 out of 5 stars Fantastic Series.......2006-03-16

All Creatures are a great series of books, and the TV series was a fantastic adaptation. I first saw these on TV in England when I was a kid. Now with 3 kids of my own it has been great to introduce them to my own children. We bought series one and my 11 and 9 year olds were really eager to see series two. For those people who want great family entertainment which showcases lots of countryside, animals, unusual characters and situation comedy with no swearing, sex or innuendo, then you should view All Creatures.
Series 2 is probably better than series 1 as the characters are all developed. The acting is superb, especially Robert Hardy, who is by far the most accomplished actor as Siegried. Peter Davison, as Tristan is the comedian of the group.
If you haven't seen All Creatures, buy Series 1 first then get series 2. If you have seen series 1, then order series 2 now!
