i've seen it all before.......2007-02-09

The reason i gave this 2 stars is because it is nothing great. The movie is average and alot of the gore is assumed as we see blood splash on the walls and we don't get to see much of people being torn apart. For example you see a guy getting his head or neck ripped open but we only see his legs hanging there while all the dismantling is where we cannot see and that is very disappointing to me. In other scenes we see people being dragged away then see there half mutilated body later but we don't see the them being killed. I am very seasoned when it comes to horror movies so if you want mediocrity this is it. The acting wasn't all that bad but I became bored easily and i turned it off after 1 hour. Some people may enjoy this but again this is nothing new for me.

After falling asleep and being locked in the subway station Franka Potente and others are pursued and dispatched by a deformed maniac who curiously travels with his own entorage of rats. The acting is decent but the story is full of plot holes and cliches. The "operation" scene was creepy but too little too late to save the film. I suggest watching the alternate beginning which was a helpful backstory of the film but was unfortunately left out. It would have filled in some of the plot holes. If you are a horror fan like me then you will probably rent it anyway out of curiosity but you are probably better off watching it when it comes to the sci fi channel.

Unique and Very Good. 73 out of 100.......2006-08-30

Creep is the story of a German woman named Kate, played by Franka Potente, who falls asleep in a subway station and wakes up to find she is locked in with some sort of nearly inhuman killer. The action winds through lost, old and unused underground train tunnels, sewer tunnels, etc, which makes for a very unique setting and feel.

At first I thought the film might be boring because Kate, and only Kate was trapped. I was wrong. The film has plenty of other characters to keep it fresh, and the film never became boring.

The movie is very fun to watch and isn't, by any means, a typical horror film. You will remember the killer, and the setting. The setting is very immersive, and you find yourself sucked into the story very quickly.

The acting in Creep is very, very good. Vas Blackwood puts in a very good support role. There wasn't an over-actor to be found. The dialog didn't come off at any time as forced or phony, as happens quite often in horror films.

Overall, there really were no cliches to be found. Creep is fresh, and for fans of horror it is a must see. For those seeking a good, creepy, horror movie that is a cut above, Creep will satisfy because of its good action, pacing and story.

There are only a couple of times in the film where I scratched my head saying, could that really happen. These moments were few and far between, but annoying none the less.

Another nit pick I had with the film is that it could have been a bit more suspenseful at times. I didn't end the film and check all the doors in the house. Despite being a good film, Creep wasn't creepy enough for my blood.

The DVD packs a lot of interesting features which, unlike many DVDs, are fun to watch for fans of the movie.

Watch it, rent it, and you might even buy it. Creep is not a perfect film, but it is very good, very unique, and a film that many will remember.

Had potential but..........2006-06-06

I am not a great fan of films full of gore, and this proves that I still don't like them.
The main character is unlikable and never fully comes across. She's just kind of there, along for the ride. Now, the idea has great potential. Who wouldn't be afraid of a strange creature lurking in the subway tunnels? And that sound it makes?-If I heard that, I'd start running.
This film had some real possibilities. The creature was genuinely creepy, but it wasn't enough. Could have been scarier by using more subtle means. I actually hated nearly every single character: especially one man at the beginning and his unwanted advances. And the characters make the movie, so if they don't have that, they basically have nothing.
While watching this, I was disgusted. Maybe if the characters were more likable, the story was written better, and it was a little less gross, I would have enjoyed this. But no.

Better than most.......2006-05-28

The reviews I'd read elsewhere made the film seem a bit more offbeat, but really, this movie is based on a very conventional plot. I only decided to watch this because I thought it was a German film, and I have tired of both American films (long ago), and the Asian horrors are now becoming derivative.

Anyhow, back to the film: I would say this is an average to above average suspense/horror but it's better than most horror films nowadays and certainly very interesting. Some scenes are bloody and cruel, but there isn't anything necessarily gratuitious or too disgusting. There aren't any disrobing females in this either, and so you know this film isn't your typical horror which is trying to appease to a male audience. I would recommend it to watch, but it's not going to be a classic horror film anytime soon.

I just finished watching Hide and Creep. I have a stack of these zombie movies. Some of them aren't bad done--you have a neat idea written correctly, some actors who can actually act, and a director who knows what he is doing. Others give more of the appearance of somebodies first attempt to make a movie--not such a bad idea, but not written out as it should have been, actors seemingly not into their work, cameras not placed just right (that's not a big thing) and a director who let all the little mistakes get passed.

Unfortunately, Hide and Creep falls into the last pile.

Zombie movies are okay, if you like them. They're so-so to me unless I see something original and being carried out properly. Well, (you might say) they did it for 9000 dollars! What did you expect?

I say, Well, it does not cost a dime more to write a well written script than it does to write a bad one. Nor does it cost a dime more for the actors to act than it does for them not to act. The same goes for the Director--it's not just yelling action and checking camera angles and audio yea know. The Director supposed to know when something is wrong--the camera angle is wrong, the look on that charactors faces is smiling or appears to be smiling when they supposed to be snearing, the idea of the script is okay but adding all this other material sends the plot off into four other directions and therefore looses most of its' potential for intensity or humor or even a story.

A writer who can write does not put in ten different main charactors with ten different sub plots (there own stories) and try to chain them together into a movie--it's like taking ten different stories, chaining them together with a thread or two of plot to make a movie, then run all of them at the same time. The plot isn't futhered, the movie drags, nothing gets done. And if you shuffle these ten stories together like a deck of cards the whole movie starts making little sense. A chain of short stories just doesn't make for an entertaining movie unless it is the Bible or the Martian Chronicals.

I give Hide and Creep a tip of the hat for bringing it in at 9000 dollars! And I am glad these 'indies' are still slugging upstream against the prevailing current of Hollywood hacks trying to drown all of the independants and the last 'real' art of this country. However, you guys are going to have to pay more attention to you Writing, Acting, and Directing.

All in all, this is a popcorn movie. I recommend a rent, it's an okay way to kill a boring night if you're into such things.

i really liked this movie. there wasn't much gore. there wasn't anything scary. but there were very funny lines. it was made on a low budget [well, at least they didn't use the money on the film]
the acting was very good, throughout. good charactorization, and the camera work was always well done. they had no great f/x and the back drop is just a little town.
zombie infestation hits a backwater town on a weekend when the sheiff is away. this means that the characters have to handle the problem themselves.

Imagine "Shawn of the Dead" set in Alabama and filmed on a budget of $9,000 or so and you have Hide and Creep. Zombies invade a small southern town and have the misfortune to cross paths with a sardonic and bored video store owner, a jilted lover, and a wisecracking police dispatcher (well played by Birmingham thespian Meilssa Bush). Expect plenty of southern fried deadpan, and mediocre acting but delivered with the type of direction that can only come from a fan. It doesn't have the flash or the effects of Resident Evil, or even 28 Days Later, but the producers and directors of "Hide and Creep" did a laudible job of realizing what they could pull off given the limitations they had. If you're looking for zombie movie fun, go no further.

And the director's name is Kyle -- how cool is that?

This is a low budget "B" film and you have to watch it as such. For a B movie, it's great. It is well done and very funny. Grab a beer and some popcorn, sit back and enjoy.

Oh the humanity!.......2004-08-24

Director Tim Ritter's shot on video magnum opus, "Creep," carries the dreaded Sub Rosa Studios designation. Anyone remotely familiar with Sub Rosa knows that this company distributes the most appalling Grade Z schlock ever conceived by the human mind. What can you say about a film distribution company that unleashes films like "Peter Rottentail," "Feeders," and "Shatter Dead" on an unsuspecting world? Precious little that's good, unfortunately. Sub Rosa makes Troma look like the Criterion Collection. What particularly sticks in my craw about this firm is how they hype this shot on video junk, how they seem to equate every release with the latest Sundance Film Festival winner. Believe me when I say that a film like "Creep" will never win any substantive awards. I should admit I liked a couple of Sub Rosa films, specifically "Meat Market" and "Ice From the Sun," but I liked them more for what they could have been than what they actually were. "Ice From the Sun" was probably the best of the batch, a film with an inventive idea and occasionally interesting special effects. "Creep," on the other hand, fails on so many levels that writing a review of the picture feels like an exercise in pointlessness.

Ritter's film centers on the character of Angus Lynch (Joel Wynkoop), a lumpy, sweaty serial killer type recently escaped from prison. We see the big break at the beginning of the film, a sloppily shot and sloppily edited car crash and foot chase resulting in the demise of a few corrections officers. Lynch follows up his leap to freedom with a cheesy double homicide involving a girl and her boyfriend parked out in the Florida backwoods. The story shifts at this point to introduce us to Officer Jackie Ketchum (Patricia Paul), a severe looking cop with a chip on her shoulder a mile wide and ten deep. For example, when she catches some nut putting something in bottles of baby food at the local gas station, she beats the man senseless and then forces him to eat his own poisonous treats. Jackie's behavior lands her in hot water with her cop father, Captain David Ketchum (Tom Karr), who promptly suspends his daughter until the inevitable investigation wraps up. Jackie's problems stem from childhood when she witnessed the heinous murder of her mother. You'll quickly learn that every character in "Creep" is damaged in some significant way.

Angus Lynch's crime spree continues after he reunites with his buxom sister Kascha (Kathy Willets), an exotic dancer married to an obnoxious slob of a husband. It turns out both Kascha and Angus underwent severe emotional and physical abuse as children, so the reunion is a lot like putting a match to gasoline. The two siblings immediately engage in the most despicable of behaviors: there are weird dancing games, bloody carnage, and a jaunt out in the country as brother and sister pay a lascivious visit to Mom in the cemetery. Lynch henceforth strikes out alone, robbing a pawnshop, using a blowtorch in an inventive way, and generally making a nuisance of himself. All the while, Jackie Ketchum comes closer and closer to the answers behind her mother's gory demise. I will say this much about "Creep": the film does involve a few plot twists and turns that one usually does not see in super low budget shot on video productions. Either my mind is turning into mush from watching too many claptrap movies (a distinct possibility), or video camera toting filmmakers actually are improving their efforts. A few twists does not make "Creep" an engaging or good film, however.

I don't necessarily blame Tim Ritter as much as I should for the failures of "Creep." He seems like an articulate, enthusiastic young man in love with actualizing his visions. I just wish he would do one simple thing: SHOOT YOUR NEXT FILM ON CELLULOID! Please, I'm begging all experienced shot on video filmmakers to start using actual film on their next production. I know using film stock costs more, will require you to save up a bit more money, but this small step will clear up a host of technical problems. The picture will look cleaner, you won't have all that background video camera noise plugging up the audio, and audiences will take you more seriously than they do now. Of course, film stock would have never improved the acting in this film, not in a million years. About the only believable character in "Creep" is Jackie Ketchum--played competently, not expertly, by Patricia Paul. Everyone else couldn't act his or her way through a kindergarten play. Kathy Willets, whose infamous scandal in Florida put her name in the headlines over a decade ago, injects just enough energy into the Kascha character to convince an audience that she might, MIGHT, be an actual human being. Joel Wynkoop generates more laughs than scares as the unbalanced Angus Lynch. And Tom Karr's Captain David Ketchum achieves an incredible sense of blandness, to the point that he's in danger of blending into the wallpaper on more than one occasion.

The "Creep" DVD comes with a bunch of extras. You get three separate commentary tracks. You get a lengthy documentary covering the production of the film, Willet's notoriety, and Tim Ritter's career. The soundtrack to the film comes from some group named Alucarda (a reference to the cult film of the same name, perhaps?). An amazingly banal film considering the subject matter, "Creep" has somehow managed to lodge itself deep into my head. I can see the movie unfolding in my mind as though I watched it mere minutes ago, a deeply disturbing revelation indeed and probably due to Kathy Willet's surgically enhanced attributes more than anything else. Novices to low budget filmmaking might want to take a step back before watching "Creep." You're probably not ready for it yet.

This movie is terrible! I couldn't watching the hole thing and had to shut it off. First, the filming and angles were atrocious. It was like taking my old VHS camera and just start filming. Second, the acting was so bad it made Sofia Coppola look like an Oscar winner. Last, there was no plot. The script must have been written on the spot. If you want a good Sub Rosa film, go buy Undertow or Backwoods!

I saw this film in 1995 and it was Great! I can't wait for the DVD with all the extras! The Director Tim Ritter is KING! This movie is a classic.
