5 out of 5 stars Laughing all the way...........2007-06-30

I remember some of these movies from when I was a kid (okay, I'm dating myself but I don't care). "Hold That Ghost", which is the reason I bought this collection, has some of the funniest bits EVER captured on film. No "off color" language or jokes -- just lots of laughs. The exchange after Joan Davis runs into Lou Costello and knocks him down STILL makes me laugh out loud. If you like "funny" -- this is your ticket.

4 out of 5 stars Classic comedies.......2007-06-24

It may be hard to believe nowadays, but Abbott and Costello were once one of the biggest box office draws at the movies. In the early 1940s, their movies were among the tops in terms of tickets. Nowadays, they seem to be mostly forgotten except by fans of old movies, which is too bad. Their movies may not be the best comedy ever written, but they are all pretty fun. Volume 1 of The Best of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello features their first eight films.

One Night in the Tropics is their screen debut. They are actually just secondary characters who contribute little to the plot (involving some romantic mix-ups) but are brought in to lighten things up, with among other things, their "Who's on First" routine. Next up is their first starring feature and the first of their three military comedies, Buck Privates. In this one, they accidentally enlist in the army while trying to avoid a cop who later turns out to be their drill sergeant.

The next of their "service comedies" was In The Navy, in which they assist a famous singer who is trying to become a regular Joe by becoming a sailor. The final service comedy is Keep `Em Flying, which puts them in the early Air Force.

The pair inherit a supposed haunted house on Hold That Ghost. It actually used to belong to a mobster, and some of his loot is still in the place, attracting other hoodlums. In Ride `Em Cowboy, they wind up on a dude ranch. Pardon My Sarong is something of a takeoff on the Hope/Crosby Road pictures, with the two winding up on a tropical island. Finally, in Who Done It?, they are entangled in a murder mystery at a radio station.

There is a very structured approach to these movies: Universal Pictures obviously wanted these churned out quickly (some were out within a couple months of the start of shooting!) and they used plenty of contract players: for example, three movies have Shemp Howard in small parts and Dick Foran in bigger parts. All the movies are pretty short (they range from 78 to 87 minutes). They all have a romantic subplot involving other characters and (with the exception of Who Done It?), they all have several musical numbers, some featuring big names like the Andrews Sisters and Ella Fitzgerald.

At the core, however, are Abbott and Costello, more particularly Lou Costello who forms the comic heart of these stories. They are the same characters in every story: Bud is the fast-talking con man and Lou is the not-so-bright coward with an almost child-like approach to the world. There is plenty of physical comedy, but they are at their best when the two are just talking.

It'd be a bit much to call these films classics, but they are entertaining and they would probably amuse kids as well as adults. I suppose it's also technically inappropriate to call this The Best of Abbott and Costello when it actually is just their first eight movies, but at the same time it is true: this collection does show them in top form.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2007-06-15

Except for "One Night in the Tropics", these are some of Abbott and Costello's most entertaining films. One of my very favorite A@C films, "Ride 'em Cowboy" is marred by the dreadful dream sequence. What makes it more frustrating is to read from sources that other comedy scenes (which sound funnier) were filmed but rejected including extended bits of business with the poker sequence. The rest of "Ride 'em Cowboy" however more than makes up for the dream skit. This dvd set is a great buy for the cost.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable films, great price, questionable disc quality.......2007-05-04

While I don't think I'll ever grow to be a *huge* A&C fan, as I've been seeing more and more of their films, I've grown to genuinely like them and to really enjoy watching them, even if I personally don't find them as consistently hilarious and personally endearing as some of the other great comedians of the era. But for this price, and for this many films in one collection, how could anyone go wrong?

'One Night in the Tropics' (1940) is actually a star vehicle for Allan Jones (best-known for his roles in the Marx Brothers' first two MGM films), Nancy Kelly, Robert Cummings, Peggy Moran, and a few other secondary characters. It's an enjoyable movie, but nothing really classic or memorable. A&C are actually the most interesting characters and steal the show, even though their comedy routines are detached from the plot and they're just trotted out as periodic comic relief. They're also not really playing very sympathetic characters in this one. It seems like one of those films that's watched more for the historical interest than for genuine entertainment value.

'Buck Privates' (1941), their first starring vehicle, is considered a classic, though here too they often seem to be relegated to supporting comedians and pushed to the back burner in favor of the romantic subplot. The same holds true in their other two service comedies, 'In the Navy' and 'Keep 'Em Flying' (also from 1941). While all three of their service comedies are genuinely enjoyable and funny, they would have been even stronger and funnier if all of the superfluous musical numbers and the romantic subplots with boring characters we don't really care about had been cut out. They were funny and talented enough to carry a film on their own without being forced to play second-fiddle to secondary characters! The weakest of these three is 'Keep 'Em Flying'; overall it just seems disjointed and inconsistent, and like they'd run out of top-notch material to mine after already doing their first two service comedies. (These service comedies also feel, in hindsight, like subtle propaganda just in case the U.S. really did enter WWII, what with the "Isn't the Army/Navy/Air Force great and fun?" theme.)

'Hold That Ghost' (1941) is also somewhat bogged down by musical numbers and a romantic subplot, but at least here those elements don't take up as much time as in a lot of their other early films. The plotline about spending a night in a haunted house and all of the hair-raising things that happen seems a bit cliché today, and the script seems a little weak, but overall there are enough funny moments and interesting twists and turns in the plot to make it worthwhile.

'Who Done It?" (1942), which mixes comedy and a murder mystery, has a very strong script and a supporting cast. What makes this film so funny and tight is that it focuses almost entirely on A&C instead of being cluttered up by some boring romantic subplot and superfluous song and dance numbers. 'Pardon My Sarong' (1942), made in imitation of the popular Hope and Crosby 'Road' pictures of the time, finds them on a tropical island. Although it does feature musical numbers and a romantic subplot, at least the comedy routines are seamlessly worked into the picture instead of seeming more detached from the plotline, and the subplot seems more interesting than usual. 'Ride 'Em Cowboy' (1942) is enjoyable entertainment and has a good script, though unfortunately has the same formulaic feel that a lot of these other films do--musical numbers and a dull romantic subplot that really slow down the story and relegate A&C to supporting characters. Normally I find Westerns boring and dated at best and offensive at worst, but since this is a comedy Western, I liked it. Even the stereotypical depictions of the Native Americans weren't as bad and offensive as they often are in these kinds of films.

Overall, while A&C aren't my top favorite comedians, I do enjoy watching them, and these early films are no exception. And while the songs and romantic subplots slow the pictures down, the boys are great when they're front and center instead of being relegated to supporting players. However, while this may seem like a great price for 8 films, it's not entirely a great deal. Since these are double-sided discs, they're more prone to scratching and malfunctioning. While the first disc played fine for me, I had to go through a number of different copies before finally getting a second disc that didn't freeze up or skip at any point. Would it have taken that much effort for Universal to ensure more quality control on this classic catalogue? And while the extras (trailers and production notes) are much appreciated, these films and this comedy team are famous and respected enough to have merited something more, like audio commentaries or photo galleries. Still, at least they're represented on DVD now, inferior technical quality or not.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Abbott and Costello, Vol. 2.......2007-04-02

Abbott and Costello's humor is outstanding and timeless. This collection of some of their movies will have you laughing uproariously, and you will watch these movies over and over again, and keep on laughing even after you've watched them so many times that you know what is going to happen next.

Christy (Lauren Lee Smith) and the rest of the Cutter Gap community are just beginning to recover from a typhoid epidemic when a storm hits the rural alcove. In A New Beginning, the second of a two-part PAX production that began with A Change of Seasons, she gets stranded in the forest with Dr. MacNeill (Stewart Finlay-McLennan), and her fiancé David (James Waterston) risks life and limb to rescue her. Despite a loss of property, the town makes it through the storm relatively intact, but many have been changed by the experience. Christy, for instance, has come to see Dr. MacNeill in a new light, thus questioning her engagement to David. Will she marry the preacher or break off the engagement? Marriage is on the minds of several characters in this engaging recollection by the elderly Christy about her experiences as a young schoolteacher in the Smoky Mountains. Age 8 and older. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars A word of caution.......2007-01-31

This is a beautiful story. And well worth watching and owning. But if you already have Choices of the Heart, don't buy A New Beginning because they are identical. Apparently a studio trick to get you to buy dupes.

1 out of 5 stars I know Christy and she's no Christy . . . ........2006-06-30

To be blunt, Laura Lee Smith's Christy is petulant and immature. I like Diane Ladd as an actress, but her portrayal of Alice Henderson is bland.

Thumbs up to the men -- Stewart Finaly-McLennan and James Waterson. Also, Dale Dickey did a great job with the role of Opal McHone and I thought Emily Perkins and Olivia Kelly were outstanding as Zady Spencer and Ruby Mae (respectively.

The script could have provided a much better transitions in several place. Most notably, we see the good-by to one beau. It would have been more emotionally satisfying to see her say "YES!" to the other.

While some performances were excellent, the movie must stand on the overall performance of the cast, director and screenwriters. With Christy and Alice being so central to the story, it simply doesn't make it.

We all knew who she would end up with, anyway, didn't we??? Much better to go back and watch the CBS series or better yet, read the book!

3 out of 5 stars Christy.......2006-03-21

Out of the three Christy movies done starring Laurn Lee Smith, this one is the best. It's a good movie. I thought Lauren Lee Smith did a good job. The only problem was she wasn't the Christy we started out with and know and love. Kellie Martin did a great job as Christy. She and Stewart Finlay McLennan had great chemistry. If the series had starred Lauren Lee Smith as Christy from the beginning, the movies would have gone over a lot better, I think. I did not like the woman who played Miss Alice. Yuck. The guy who played the preacher did pretty well. The woman who played Fairlight-- she was okay, but you can't hardly replace main characters. Watching the new movies was almost like watching a totally different story. Since almost none of the orginal actors and actresses (save Stewart Finlay McLennan/ Doctor MacNeil) it was hard to take as an end to Christy. I enjoyed Doctor MacNeil. : ) He is a good actor and did well with Lauren Lee Smith. I do like Lauren Lee Smith, too. She just didn't start out as Christy.
We get to know who Christy chooses to marry in this movie and that's great. She picks the right man. :p Christy also kept her relationship with God in the movies, which I was glad to see. It's a romantic, adventurous movie and it's decent-- it won't burn your eyes or make you blush. Give it a try.

1 out of 5 stars Christy - A new Biggining.......2006-01-25

As far as the three Christy DVD's that you are selling, I think they stink. I lived in Tennessee when they were filming the original series, and this is not the original. Amazon should let customers know that these DVD's are remakes of the original series.

2 out of 5 stars Ok..........2004-07-19

The new "Christy" was ok. But the original cast with Kelly Martin and Tyn Daly will alway be Christy and Miss Alice. I just thought that the girl they got to play Christy was so bland and calm when the Character was actually a little more fiesty. But that wasn't even my main problem with it. My problem was that they had replaced all the character's which is fine, but if your going to do that. Then replace all that characters. Dr.Mcneil is played by that same actor that was in the telvision series. He had chemistry with Kelly Martin. You knew those two. They had no history with him and "NEW CHRISTY". It just didn't seem right to have him played by the same man and everyhting around him different. I might have enjoyed it more if they had gotten a different actor b/c then I wouldn't thought through the whole thing, NO THIS WRONG. We watched the series as him and Kelly battled and domewhat flirted and You were so upset when they left you hanging. But to add new people and then keep him. Just wasn't right...

In A Change of Seasons, Christy returns to Cutter Gap with her adult daughter, Catherine, and narrates an episode in her life as a young schoolteacher. The story picks up where the PAX production, Return to Cutter Gap, left off. In this recollection, typhoid sweeps the region, and Christy's faith is tested when her best friend succumbs to the disease. Christy (Lauren Lee Smith), Alice (Diane Ladd), Dr. MacNeill (Stewart Finlay-McLennan), and David (James Waterston), the local preacher, do what they can to save the rest of the inflicted, but they can only do so much. Towards the end, Christy gets engaged to one of the men, but then he contracts the disease. Fortunately, he recovers, but things end on an ambiguous note as Christy appears to have lost the friendship of the man whose affections she spurned. This dilemma will be resolved in A New Beginning. Ages 8 and older. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

1 out of 5 stars Christy - A Change of Seasons.......2007-06-11

As I had watched the original series, the differences were very apparent in the change of actors, location and characters and even the theme of the story. It would have been nicer to have had the ending of the original series as the flow wasn't good. I was very disappointed with their new take on the original series.

3 out of 5 stars Caution: Watch with an open mind!.......2007-04-26

After having watched the 20 episodes of the original Christy series, I was dismayed and disappointed with these subsequent videos. Not only are some key actors and actresses missing but the entire atmosphere of "Cutter's Gap" is topsy-turvy compared to the original episodes. I feel for the returning actors and actresses (Neil McNeil, Tom, Opal, etc.) that had to watch this change take place and still try to respond like the old characters did to their surroundings. These new videos (in my humble opinion) demean the mountain people whereas in the original there was nobility to their characters even in the midst of their ignorance. Not only that, but the handling of God and Christianity in these new videos is ridiculous -- throwing around cutsy little sayings, etc. with no depth.

Unlike the originals, these videos portray life there in one dimension. There are too many dramatic elements just seemingly thrown in for the sake of action -- no real thinking behind the events. It seems to me someone meant well but missed the mark completely. Very sad. I could easily just get up and walk away from these movies even as badly as I wanted to see the outcome for Christy's marital decision.

So I caution those that were touched and moved by the original episodes. They were truly over with the last episode depicting Christy holding her engagement ring from David in one hand and Doc McNeil riding up on his little horse (they do give him a larger, more handsome horse in the new videos). Finishing those episodes in your mind is much better than contaminating them with these new imposter videos.

Thank you for the space to air my thoughts.

p.s. I am told by my daughter, and I agree to an extent, that the new actresses for Ruby Mae and Fairlight were the only ones that lived up to the original characters.

5 out of 5 stars Wish there were more programs like these.......2006-02-24

We've read the book, watched the TV series, and bought all three of the DVD episodes. Although many of the actors are different than the TV series, we thought they did a good job and portrayed their parts with understanding and professionalism. I get a kick out of reading reviews where the actors are accused of over-acting. We especially watched for that. We didn't see any. Of course, I've only directed and/or produced over 500 films and videos with several Emmys and other awards so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the programs and can't wait until we can actually visit the site where Christy took place. We will view the series at least once a year. We recommend the series to anyone who enjoys celebrating the lives of people who make a difference in this world. Christy certainly did.

1 out of 5 stars A tad disappointed.......2004-07-03

The 1 star is for the cast who returned from the CBS series, especially Steward Finlay-McClennan's Dr. MacNeil! Having loved the series & the book, I was a bit disappointed with Lauren Lee Smith, Tyne Daly & Sam W. portrayals of key characters. The original series' cast (Kellie Martin, Tyne Daly & Randall Batinkoff) were much more realistic & believable (the movies sometimes had over-acting... ah, what could have been!). All in all, perhaps 'newbies' could start with the series before seeing the movies. For Christy fans who have a hard time swallowing Smith's performance over Kellie Martin's (or Miss Alice & David), I'd think twice before buying the movies.

Based on Catherine Marshall's beloved novel Christy, this PAX Television adaptation features Lauren Lee Smith as the 19-year-old schoolteacher who flounders and perseveres in an isolated mountain community in the early 1900s. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Great Smokey Mountains, this 89-minute film begins with an elderly Christy returning to the long-abandoned mission where she once taught. Her memories center around a time when change was coming to Cutter Gap--some for the better, some not, and all of it resisted by the locals. The reverend is building a new road, poachers are afoot, and a fetching aviator makes an emergency landing outside of town. Meanwhile, Christy is pushing a young student to study for medical school against the wishes of his father. Mission funds are cut, townsfolk revolt against her, and she suffers the loss of support from her mentor and mission director (Diane Ladd), and Christy must do some soul-searching. Excellent family viewing for ages 6 and up, the film does have some gunplay, a violent injury, and talk of lynching--all revolving around the poaching subplot. --Kimberly Heinrichs

1 out of 5 stars Christy - Return to Cutter Gap.......2007-06-11

As I had watched the original series, the differences were very apparent in the change of actors, location and characters and even the theme of the story. It would have been nicer to have had the ending of the original series as the flow wasn't good. I was very disappointed with their new take on the original series.

2 out of 5 stars DIsappionting.......2007-05-24

I was rather disappionted with this addition to the Christy series. Not only were hardly any of the original actors in the movie, but the story went over ground already covered in the original series. I found it redundent and annoying. The girl who played Christy tried her best but I don't know how you can top the original. Plus in the end it does not let on to who (the doc or the minister) Christy ends up with. Read the book for the full story, it is definetly worth it!

2 out of 5 stars miscast mess.......2007-04-30

These three tv movies is just horribly miscast. The actor that played Neill is too old, Christy is played horribly, and Alice doesn't capture the Quaker spirit.
To say nothing of the script...which could of used a major overhaul, before production.
In these movies Christy is immature, snobbish, and somehow holier than thou...
The actor's Scottish accent is good, but a six year gap between the tv show and the tv movie was too long. Perhaps a younger actor would of been better. He'd of been a good Dr Ferrand, perhaps.
And as some have mentioned Alice's thee's and thou's seemed forced...perhaps the script was bad.
Only the last of the series was passable, only to find out who Christy marries...but by then you lose interest and could care less about the characters.
The old woman playing the aged Christy was very good. And I could almost buy the change of location...with a better cast and more tightly scripted teleplay. But as it was I'd suggest skip this version and watch the tv series instead...
In fact, I prefer the tv series that had more wit and more class and where you have to use your imagination as to who Christy choses to marry. But curiosity won out and I came out disillusioned with this miniseries.

3 out of 5 stars A different Production of Christy. But a nice One .......2007-03-09

This movie is not like the TV series that we all know and come to love.
It is in my view stand alone movies not relating to the TV series at all.
If you approach the movie not comparing it to the TV series, you might actually enjoy this movie and the other two that follow.
This might not be a 5 star production but in my view it is a wholesome production with reference to God and the Bible.

One of Jim Henson's finest works is The Storyteller series, originally airing on HBO in 1987. As with his other non-Muppet creations (Labyrinth, and The Dark Crystal), Henson fills the screen with wonderful creatures that have a wisp of a J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy. This definitive collection of 13 stories--9 based on European fables, and 4 slightly grittier takes on Greek myths--deserves to be in TV's pantheon. The series was adapted by Anthony Minghella, who became an Oscar-winning filmmaker a decade later with The English Patient. Minghella weaves the narration of a storyteller with dialogue from the stories to beguiling effect; the storyteller doesn't simply introduce the tales. The storytelling duties are split with an engaging John Hurt, and a study Michael Gambon for the Greek fables. Both are accompanied by a Muppet dog performed by Henson's son and successor, Brian.

The European tales are wonderful especially since the stories are not well known. "The Luck Child" is a brilliant short about a king bent on destroying a commoner boy, known as the luck child ("the seventh son born of a seventh son on a week with two Fridays"), after a wizard declares the boy will grow up to be king. The fate of the king is one of those hooks that should have the kids smiling for days. "Sapsorrow" is a curious variation on the Cinderella legend. Henson himself directs "Death and the Soldier," a vivid example of how these episodes were so wonderfully complex. A penniless solider (Bob Peck) is given a magical sack and he uses it to full effect, capturing gremlins and greater evils on his way to be king. "A Story Short" is the storyteller's own adventure. He makes a deal with a king to tell a story every day of the year. Yet on the last day, the storyteller's mind is a blank and his fate may lead him to a boiling vat of oil.

By nature, the Greek myth episodes are a bit more mature (ages 8 and older) and downbeat, yet give the audience lasting impressions of oft-quoted tales. In "Perseus and the Gorgon," King Argos locks away his wife when it is foretold his future son will kill him. Soon mother and son (Perseus, fathered by none other than Zeus) are washed ashore and another angry king looks to take away Perseus's mother. How can Perseus win the day? By killing the evil Gorgon whose snake-covered head includes eyes that turn humans into statues. Derek Jacobi stars as the deft Greek designer in "Daedalus and Icarus." The father goes through many hardships, including the famous episode of his son flying too close to the sun. John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) directs the tale of "Theseus and the Minotaur." A young man reunites with his father, King Aegeus, but is cursed by his witch of a stepmother (literally). When Theseus tries to stop the regular sacrifice to the half-bull, half-man Minotaur, a new curse awaits the young prince. The magical musician Orpheus (Art Malik) finds his muse in "Orpheus and Eurydice." Unfortunately, she soon dies and goes to Hades where Orpheus follows, attempting to win her soul from the devil himself. Henson's work is true family entertainment and at only 22 minutes per episode, it's the perfect companion for some fine entertainment around the TV. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as I remembered.......2007-06-08

I had only seen a handful of episodes when it first aired, and had memories of it being good, both for content and visual aspects. When I re-discovered the Storyteller from word of mouth, I ordered it immediately but I was actually afraid it wouldn't be anywhere as good as I remembered (memory has a funny way of making things better than they were).

Surprisingly the costumes, acting and puppet work are stellar and still hold up to today's standards except for a quick green screening of a sunset in an episode there's nothing I can complain about. The only negative thing I can say is I wish they had made more Storyteller episodes as I sat through all 8 in one sitting. Even if you've never seen them before, this is still a worthy buy.

The Greek mythology is almost as good, although the story teller in the original series was better than the guy they used in the Greek mythology ones.

5 out of 5 stars The story teller.......2007-05-23

This is really good. It was better than I thought it would be. I never heard of it before until recently, so i didn't know how good it would be. Stories and faerie tales really come to life in this DVD. As an adult I really enjoyed watching it.

5 out of 5 stars The only way to go........2007-05-22

Why buy both series on DVD when you can have them both!

I watched the original series as a child and this was quite the nostalgic experience for me. Jim Henson worked magic on movie and television screens in his day.

I had never seen the Greek myths and found them to be a bit more morose and less whimsical, but that's the difference between fairy tales and myths I guess.

The blue screen special effects don't quite stand up to modern standards. However, the puppets are effective. Refreshing in this day of push-button digital effects. There's a quality there that you don't see anymore.

Anyway, buy it. You'll not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars The Storyteller.......2007-05-19

This collection of Jim Henson videos is touching and heartwarming. It's also one of the few videos that is suitable for all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Jim Henson's the Storyteller - The Definitive Collection.......2007-05-18

Like most children of the 80's I grew up watching Jim Henson's Productions with wide eyes and excitement. I would rush home from school to watch his shows and in particular love listening to the wonderful storytelling voice of John Hurt in the TV series the Story Teller. To be able to purchase years later the complete series to watch again on a rainy days, snuggled up on the couch with warm cup of soup was a great. It is a great series to watch and makes you miss a time before CGI took over the film industry.

Stephen Sondheim's Victorian horror thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is generally considered his greatest work, macabre but darkly humorous with a viscerally powerful score that has found a home both on Broadway and in opera houses. George Hearn (who replaced Len Cariou of the original Broadway cast) plays the title character, a wronged man whose lust for revenge drives him to murder (an 18th-century legend who has been traced to a real-life barber), and Angela Lansbury plays his partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett, who finds a practical business use for Todd's victims. This combination of horror and humor is echoed in Sondheim's score: brooding menace ("The Ballad of Sweeney Todd," "My Friend"), achingly beautiful ballads ("Johanna," "Not While I'm Around"), clever puns ("A Little Priest"), coloratura arias ("Green Finch and Linnet Bird"), and intricate choral and ensemble numbers.

Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But Sweeney Todd is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. --David Horiuchi

Description

Times are hard in 1846 London and one must make do. So Nellie Lovett adds something extra to the meat pies she peddles on Fleet Street. The secret ingredient: freshly murdered victims of her partner in crime, barber Sweeney Todd. Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim refashions a macabre tale into a musical masterwork in this dazzling performance of the 1979 Broadway hit originally staged by Harold Prince. In her Tony-winning role (one of eight the show earned, including Best Musical), Angela Lansbury plays Nellie. George Hearn turns his stage role of twisted Sweeney into an Emmy-winning triumph. The score coils around itself in ever-tightening spirals. The lines ripple with black humor and madness. Enter Sweeney's tonsorial parlor. Attend the tale.

this is my FAVORITE show ever and im so thankful that the original/much better version is now available!

4 out of 5 stars Film record of the stage production.......2007-02-01

Halfway between movie and stage is the filming of a stage production. It is difficult to capture the intimacy and immediacy of theater on film, difficult to exercise the kind of control that film offers on stage. This is a filming of a live stage presentation. It looks reasonably good and sound quality seems fine. The major selling point is Angela Lansbury's fine performance as the demented Mrs. Lovett. It is a wonderful performance and considering how many wonderful performances on stage are lost forever, it is nice to see this one preserved. A lifetime of playing villainesses seems to free her to approach the part with utter abandon. The musical itself is excellent and beautifully done. The biggest concern I have is that with a price this high, the DVD clearly was made as cheaply as possible with a cheap cardboard container and absolutely no extras of any kind. I do not think that there is anything that would justify the cost and, while I am pleased to have the film, I am disgusted at the inordinately high price charged. It is a crime to make so little effort in simply reproducing a film whose costs were quite limited in the first place, packaging it as cheaply as possible and then charging top dollar for the final product. It is really shameful.

5 out of 5 stars Sweeny Todd.......2007-01-28

Sweeney Todd is a wonderfully dark romp through broadway. It follows the story of Benjamin Barker, a barber who was jilted by the judge and beetle of old time London and soon seeks revenge. A wonderful performance by Angela Lansbury as Nellie Lovett and Len Cariou as Sweeny Todd.

4 out of 5 stars The not-such-a-demon barber of fleet street.......2007-01-11

It is easy to see why Angela Lansbury won a Tony for this peformance. The sets, scenery and costumes are wonderful. The cast is quite effective, but at times it is very hard to distinguish some of the lyrics in the larger production numbers. A must see for anyone that is aware that Tim Burton is going to bring his own unique take on this story to life.

5 out of 5 stars LOUIE ANDERSON!!!.......2007-06-22

He was unbelievably brilliant in this movie!! His performance in this film was the best acting in the history of the universe and living things!! It is great. It is a billion times better than Howard Hesseman in "Flight of the Navigator." Anderson is in charge of making french fries at McDowell's Fast Food Restuarant." His best acting is when the place is robbed. He acts so calm. Incredible. He lets the robber call him a "fatboy" hahaha. I also loved the scene where the Lionel Ritchie lookalike pushes Louie and causes him to spill a milkshake. It is great. Louie Anderson is a genius. This movie would be nothing without his outstanding gift of acting brilliance. I saw his performance and I felt like "break dancing" hahaha. Lionel Ritchie stunk in the film. Eddie Murphy plays a billion roles but none of them compare to Mr. Andersons hahaha. Arsenio Hall was funny in his role and so was Darth Vader. The cab driver's language was very rude and unacceptable. I wouldn't get into a cab driven by such an foul-mouthed fool lol.

5 out of 5 stars Classic comedy finally gets a much needed DVD upgrade-it's about time!.......2007-06-06

Any fan of this film who has owned the previous bare-bones edition knows that it has been in much need of a better DVD for years and years, and now finally it's here. I don't see the point of rehashing the plot, because if you're reading this now, you most likely already know it (and if you don't, just buy the film anyway - you can't go wrong).

First off, here are the extra features:

-Prince-ipal Photography: The Coming Together of America
-Fit For Akeem: The Costumes of "Coming To America"
-Character Building: The Many Faces of Rick Baker (as the title suggests, this is a segment on the makeup effects used for the multiple characters played by Eddie and Arsenio).
-Composing America: The Musical Talents of Nile Rodgers
-A Vintage Sit-Down with Eddie and Arsenio (note: this interview was conducted in 1989 as a promotion for the film and is NOT a recent interview, for those of you wondering). It's still good though, and it says that it was never released until now.
-Trailer
-Photo Gallery

This new DVD also offers a very nice transfer, and I bet it looks even better on the HD-DVD version. My only complaint is that there are some "forced" previews at the beginning before the main menu appears, which one must fast-forward through. So buyer beware.

But all in all this new DVD edition blows the previous one out of the water. Highly recommended!

You'd have to be a heartless curmudgeon to dislike a movie as enjoyably sincere as Goal! The Dream Begins. Yes, the corny title tells you all you need to know about this rags-to-riches soccer tale, but like Hoosiers and Rudy, this conventional sports drama rises above its familiar plot with an engaging cast and some pleasant surprises along the way. The first in a proposed trilogy that will follow young Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker) as he rises to prominence in the competitive world of British soccer, this one begins by showing how Santiago, an undocumented immigrant in Los Angeles, attracts the attention of a talent scout (Stephen Dillane), who arranges a tryout for England's prestigious team, Newcastle United. It's rough going for a beleaguered trainee who suffers from asthma, but soon Santiago is befriended by a hard-partying soccer star (Alessandro Nivola) and he's on his way to reaching his…Goal! It's all very inevitable, but director Danny Cannon makes the most of this inspiring story by exploiting the unexpected subtleties in an otherwise predictable screenplay: Santigo's relationship with his seemingly unsupportive father (Tony Plana) gains additional resonance as the story unfolds; a local nurse (Anna Friel) turns out to be more than a routine love interest; and Newcastle's German manager (Marcel Iures) is a wry, colorful character who works miracles with his unruly squad of players. Add some obligatory cameo appearances by real-life soccer stars including (of course) the great David Beckham, and you've got a modest, likable hit that delivers exactly what it promises, and a little bit more.--Jeff Shannon

Description

Like the inspiring heroes in MIRACLE, REMEMBER THE TITANS, and THE ROOKIE, the amazingly gifted Santiago Muñez, a young immigrant living in the barrios of Los Angeles, has an impossible dream -- to play soccer for a world class team. Now he not only has to prove he has the passion, talent, and determination to make it alongside the best in the world, but he has to overcome his own demons and those of others. Filled with memorable characters, great heart, and real-life soccer legends, GOAL! THE DREAM BEGINS is a triumphant story about believing in your dreams.

This is a rags to riches story in which a young Mexican man is transported from the barrios of Los Angeles to the soccer fields of England. It is a matter of being at the right place at the right time, when a former soccer player and scout spots Santiago Munez at a local match in L.A. and arranges a try-out for him. Battling asthma and culture shock, Santiago goes from the balmy weather of southern California to the freezing rain in England. He misses his family, especially his younger brother and his grandmother, but his angry father refuses to talk to him on the phone and nurses a grudge about Santiago leaving home without telling him. Kuno Becker plays the likeable hero and he'll have you cheering him every step of the way. One criticism I have is that the movie doesn't show much of what makes Santiago great and his promotion through the ranks often comes as a surprise. Nevertheless, this is an entertaining, "feel good" movie.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Flick!.......2007-04-18

This is a fantastic movie! Goal reminds you what it is like to be young and have a dream. I really liked all aspects of this movie. The plot, the acting, the soccer moves...everything was outstanding. Despite what you may think from the title, this movie is not corny, far from it. You will walk away from this movie with a smile and a reinvigoration to get something accomplished. The soundtrack is great too!

5 out of 5 stars Knowing the happy end right from the beginning does not spoil the movie .......2007-04-08

A movie in which the happy ending is a given just when you hear its title. Yet this movie captures your interest and it keeps you at the edge of your sit because it s done in a very realistic way. Until Santiago reaches his GOAL he has to overcome big obstacles. It is not so much the heartless kicks he gets and falling with his face on the mud. It is the way he is taught from his father to take things in life. A rather fatalistic way of thinking, which does not allow him to follow his dreams and believe in himself and in his abilities. The moment he gets rid of this mind frame is the turning point. From that moment on the way to success is wide open. A good reminder for parents never to set limits to the dreams of their kids.

The movie also very realistically portrays how easy it is for kids that suddenly find themselves with millions and with fame to loose their focus and end up in oblivion (frying burgers is fine) but addicted to drugs and alcohol is really sad.

This is a very entertaining movie for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! .......2007-03-26

Finally, Hollywood has realized the appeal of the beautiful game. Soccer, the world's sport, has never had too many good fictitious films made about it, until now. My whole family enjoyed this movie. I grew up in a soccer family, attending New York Cosmos games in the heyday of the NASL. When you were at one of those games, watching Pele, Beckenbauer, et al. you felt you were witnessing something great. This movie leaves you with a great uplifting feeling in the same vein as Hoosiers & Rudy!
Highly recommend it.

Young Libby Parsons (Ashley Judd) is happy as a clam, and why not? She's got a loving, successful husband (Bruce Greenwood), an adorable son, and an island home to die for. One morning, after a romantic sailing expedition with her husband, Libby finds herself covered in blood. Her husband's missing, the boat resembles a murder scene, and there's a knife on the deck. One might stop right there and call for help; Libby, however, takes matters--or, more specifically, the knife--into her own hands, and the moment she does, there's the Coast Guard. Faster than you can say frame-up, Libby's been charged with murder and jailed, with her young son stripped from her custody. It's all cut-and-dried, except for one thing: Libby's husband isn't dead, and she's about to track him down. And thanks to the Fifth Amendment's double jeopardy rule, she can't be charged twice for his murder.

Double Jeopardy has a singularly seductive revenge premise and, in Judd, one of the most seductive leading ladies to grace the silver screen in recent years. So then why does this thriller feel like it came from the bottom of the Lifetime television movie barrel? Instead of taking a gritty, hard-boiled approach, the film plays up all of Libby's mushy emotions--tellingly, the director here is Bruce Beresford, whose best film, Driving Miss Daisy, is as far from thriller territory as you can get. No matter how stoically or deviously Judd plays her, Libby comes across as a soccer mom with a slight taste for blood. Only in a few scenes, specifically when she tracks her wily husband to his new identity in New Orleans, does Judd get to strut her stuff, stealing an evening gown and crashing his charity auction. Most of the time, though, this thriller offers only a smattering of suspense. Well, at least like Libby, the filmmakers can't be condemned twice for the same crime. With Tommy Lee Jones duplicating his Fugitive role, as Libby's conscientious parole officer. --Mark Englehart

Ashley Judd is beyond beautiful. Tommy Lee Jones is one of my favorites. The story is creative and original. Great movie.

4 out of 5 stars A Grain of Salt Review.......2007-05-22

If Ashley Judd is in the movie, I AM GOING to see it. Period. It could be a four-hour documentary on elephant bathing and I'm going to watch it if Ashley Judd makes an appearance. I say that only so that people considering my review can better understand where I'm coming from in my admittedly biased review of this movie.

HOWEVER....

I did truly love the plot of this movie. It could have starred Grover from Sesame Street and Jeff Phat from the Wiggles and I would have enjoyed it pretty much the same. (well okay maybe not, but still... the actors merely ADDED to a plot that was truly amazing.)

The plot can be summed up best with one of Ashley's more famous lines. "I can shoot you in the middle of Mardi Gras and they can't touch me..."

She'd already been convicted of a murder that had never even taken place. The guy faked his own death! And in the end, he learns a very valuable lesson... Karma is a witch... and so is Ashley Judd Scorned!

5 out of 5 stars It's a fun, vicarious thrill ride, not an art film.......2007-05-21

Critics can trot out all the evidence they like: Gaping plot holes, legal inaccuracies, cliched improbabilities, etc. It doesn't matter. 'Double Jeopardy' was a surprise box-office hit in 1999 because it was exciting, had two immensely likable powerhouse leads, and one intensely despicable villain. Ashley Judd's passionate unstoppability in pursuit of Bruce Greenwood's bottomless evil kept viewers riveted till the last frame. They couldn't wait to see him get his payback. And that coffin scene was extremely intense in a darkened theater. It was the talk of the season!

Don't rent this. Buy it. You'll thank me later.
