Description
Smash the bottle and you unleash the devil! What looks like an innocent piece of pottery filled with dust and feathers holds the key to terror in "Naked Evil," an eerie horror gem that historically preceded the black horror trend of the '70s and explored the terrifying themes of possession and exorcism years before "The Exorcist." Two street gangs are tearing apart an English town, and now one of them is turning to Jamaican black magic in the form of an "obi"--a bottle containing a ruthless demon which kills its recipient when opened. Violent deaths and graveyard desecrations lead the police to a local youth hostel, where Father Goodman and headmaster Mr. Benson--both experts in voodoo traditions--are the only chance of stopping this nameless, faceless evil! Rarely seen since its initial release, this atmospheric British blend of sin and the supernatural is presented from the finest surviving film elements. Then the story takes on a new twist in "Exorcism at Midnight," an expanded edition of the film which adds a new framing story (with "Reservoir Dogs'" Lawrence Tierney) and features surreal "Multi-Color" visual effects. Watch them both alone if you dare!

3 out of 5 stars The Airplane of 1950's sci-fi films.......2007-05-12

If you like the old 1950's sci-fi monster invasion films you'll enjoy this affectionate spoof. What I like most is that they got one of my favorite actors from that genre Kenneth Toby to recreate his character from the Thing a few other films to fight the invading monster. Also some wonderful old character actors appear in small roles through the film, like John (Trantula) Agar, Gloria (I Married a Monster From Outer Space) Talbolt, Les (War Of The Worlds) Tremayne, Robert (The Adventures Of Superman) Shayne, and Toby's co-star of The Thing, Robert Corthwite. It does get very silly, and the modern actors aren't very good, but for a fan of these films it's a must.

5 out of 5 stars I was a teenage SciFi fan.......2007-03-25

This is a loving look at the Scifi films of the 50's that I and millions of other SciFi Kids grew up watching on saturday mornings at the local theater. Unbelievable monsters terrify the world and we buy it hook, line and sinker. Ted Newsome does a great job of honoring a number of actors who shared the lives of all who followed the Scifi genre. Buy this DVD Now!!! If you love Scifi, you'll love it.

1 out of 5 stars id give it 0 stars if i could .......2007-02-26

this is quite possibly one of the worst movies i have ever seen. The acting is terrible, the jokes are all incredibly lame("give him a hand!" one characters says, than hands the other guy a small plastic hand), the sound in the film is 2nd rate at best, the video quality is awful, the plot is a jumbled mess, and absolutely NONE of it is even slightly funny! this movie wants to be an homage to the 50's B movies of yesterday, but the badness that it presents to the viewer is not a parody of the wonderful badness of 50's movies, its just plain bad! the dialog isnt so bad its hilarious, its just BAD! the story isnt so bad is funny, its just BAD! this movie isnt funny, it isnt cool, it isnt clever, avoid it at all costs it is absolute, unadulturated, GARBAGE! instead, see Larry Blamire's "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra", a movie that actually hit all the marks that this film missed. Skeleton is funny, clever, cool, and wonderfully capatures the spirit of those 50's B movies, and the wonderful badness therein.in other words, its everything that The Naked Monster isnt. thank you:)

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars only for die-hard fans of Satirical Spoofs.......2006-08-23

This is a difficult movie to rate...if you are old enough to have been a fan of many of the old Sci-Fi and Horror movies of the 1950's and are able to spot references to those old films, then you can get some good chuckles from the dialogues and scenes in "The Naked Monster". It was released decades ago with the title of "Attack of the B-Movie Monster" to a very limited run on VHS, and now is available as "The Naked Monster" on DVD, distributed by Anthem Pictures. Just keep in mind that the movie is definitely a low-budget production, shot almost as though it was an amateur effort. You're not going to find this movie anywhere near the caliber of other spoofs, such as "Airplane".
All that being said, the movie brings back to the screen many of the stars of the 50's, including some who are no longer with us, having passed away. Among those are Kenneth Tobey ("Capt. Hendry" in "The Thing", who died in 2002), Robert Cornthwaite ("Dr. Carrington" in "The Thing", who died in July of 2006), and others from that genre.
There are some gratuitous nude scenes in the movie, and in a film preview that's also on the DVD, so this film isn't really for kids.
An interesting extra choice from the menu is an interview done between a horror-movie host and Kenneth Tobey, which has his remembrances of filming some of the movies he had starred in. That was fun to watch.
Bottom line is that the 5-Star rating I gave it is for those who mainly want to revisit old memories. For anyone else, it's merely a curiosity piece.

3 out of 5 stars Do you like your exorcisms in black & white or tinted color?.......2005-04-24

To be very clear, this is not really a double feature we are watching this Saturday night, but a strange opportunity to see the same movie twice. "Naked Evil" is a 1966 black & white film directed by Stanley Goulder who adapted it from a play by Jon Manchip White called "The Obi." The film was not merely known as "Exorcism at Midnight" when it was screened in the United States, it was (a) given a framing device shot in color that appears at the start, middle, and end of the film, and (b) the rest of the black and white film was tinted. Not only that, there is actually an explanation in the framing device for why most of the movie is tinted.

In "Naked Evil" is set in an English town that seems to be populated mostly by Jamaicans and when two rival gangs go at it one of them employs an obi, which is a voodoo object that is simply a bottle filled with graveyard dirt and stuffed with feathers. Breaking it is a bad thing because it releases a demon and then wackiness ensues (like people flying out of windows). With people dying violently and the local graveyard being desecrated, so Inspector Hollis (Richard Coleman) is checking out some leads at the local youth hostel where the Jamaicans and other science students from around the Commonwealth live. The headmaster Mr. Benson (Basil Dignam) and Father Goodman (Olaf Pooley) happen to know something about obis and voodoo, so that helps take care of the exposition. They also find that Amizan (Brylo Forde), the old caretaker from the West Indies has dead chickens and other voodoo type stuff in his basement room. Meanwhile, Danny (George Saunders), one of the Jamaican students gets possessed by the demon and the Inspector is no longer talking about pranks. Suzanne Neve is Janet, the headmaster's secretary, and Anthony Ainley is Dick Alderson, his assistant, who are seeing each other and get to be the white couple in danger, presumably so the audience has characters with whom they can more readily identify, although they less interesting than Danny and his fiance.

You have to remember that this is a story about demon possession and exorcism before William Peter Blatty and Linda Blair. The gang element is so low keyed you forget it is part of the story, and it is the exorcism that becomes the climax of the film. This is a low budget film put out by Columbia and there is a nice touch at the end as the sound continues over the Columbia logo. But even for the English this is really just such a low-keyed film. Every one is just too calm and talk about demon possession and exorcism in the most reasonable terms. Even the Jamaicans are rather cool given there are a far way from home and engaging in voodoo and mayhem. So when we get to the drama of the actual exorcism and the attempt to cast out the demon as it jumps from body to body, it is really hard to get too excited, which is not what you want at that point in a film like this one.

In "Exorcism at Midnight" we get the exact same film but with the framing story stat offers Lawrence Tierney ("Reservoir Dogs") as the doctor, Catherine Erhardt as the nurse, and Addision Green as Blair, the guy the doctor talks to when he is not talking to the nurse. I hear this new footage was shot in one day and you can get a kick out of everybody taking seriously the nonsense they are spouting to try and make the framing device work. The tinting job is actually not that bad and certainly makes more sense then going from full color to black & white. At the very least, this is an interesting way of watching a movie twice, so just go ahead and do it.

Unlike the DVDs from Something Weird and Killer Creature Double Feature there are relatively slim pickings when it comes to extras. There are a pair of trailers for "Naked Evil," although besides the scratches on the second one I am not sure what the differences are between the two (but I did learn the movie was in "Evilcolor"). There is a commentary track for "Exorcism at Midnight" that lasts maybe half the film by Sam Sherman, where he explains why they did what they did and who gets credit for what, and eventually runs out of stories (what is the point of talking about dirty limericks without actually telling one?). I rate both versions at 3 stars so there is no need to do additional math. Be sure to join us next weekend when we go back to cheap American horror movies with "The Beast From Haunted Cavez" and "The Brain That Wouldn't Die."

5 out of 5 stars Marvelously bad.......2005-11-08

This movie belongs with Plan 9 as a movie that's so bad, it's hard not to laugh.

Patrick Macnee is particularly funny.

The pace for the first hour or so is so slow you might be tempted to advance to the next chapter, or kill the movie to do something more exciting - like watching your grass grow. Don't do it. You really need to endure the entire beginning of the movie to get the maximum effect.

4 out of 5 stars A funny, underrated movie........2004-12-06

THE STORY: A group of space expolores found a jelly-like thing on another planet. There it grows into something evil.

MY THOUHTS: A very funny movie! The monster singing had me in stitches! The special effects are horrible, but I think they were meant to be like that. Very good! So why 4 stars? Well, the DVD is horrible! All it has is a chapter selection. No subtitles, commentaries, deleted scenes, no nothing!

Rent it!

1 out of 5 stars EMPTY SPACE.......2004-08-10

Filmed on a budget of probably no more than $1200, NAKED SPACE is one of the WORST Spoofs I've ever seen. Writer/director/co-star Bruce Kimmel bombards us with lame, humorless dialogue; a set that looks like Plan 9 from Outer Space with a budget cut, and the performances (save for Gerrit Graham's mugging) are unabashedly terrible. Never would I have thought Leslie Nielsen could be so unfunny, nor Cindy Williams and Patrick Macnee so obnoxious. As for Kimmel, what is it with the song and dance numbers? I Want to Eat Your Face was funny for about two seconds. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but I did expect a laugh or two. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

1 out of 5 stars why, oh why, do I have to give it ANY stars?!?.......2003-02-20

I rented this and hated it. I love Leslie's movies, but this was unspeakably stupid. I won "Wrongfully Accused" on an ebay auction and it included "Naked Space" for FREE. That ought to tell you something right there. Sadly, I couldn't persuade the guy to NOT send it to me. Maybe I'll have to try to unload my copy. It is far beyond terrible.

1 out of 5 stars well there goes 5 dollars...........2002-12-21

well I saw this dvd at a local store for $5.00.Let me tell you,for this movie $5.00 is NOT a bargain. The sets often look like stage plays put together by a middle school! Before I saw it in the store I've never heard of it.It should have stayed that way.Anyway the reason that I picked this up is because I saw that it had Leisle Neilson boasted on the case.I've seen other Neilson movies like the wonderful Naked Gun triligy, and loved them! But dispite Leisle being the big picture on the case he only has a small role. And Leisle was not at his best.I'd like to sum it up by saying that everything else was at a devestating low,and that even at a low price I dont reconmend at all.
