This sensational, extremely influential, 1974 low-budget horror movie directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, Lifeforce, Salem's Lot), may be notorious for its title, but it's also a damn fine piece of moviemaking. And it's blood-curdling scary, too. Loosely based on the true crimes of Ed Gein (also a partial inspiration for Psycho), the original Jeffrey Dahmer, Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows a group of teenagers who pick up a hitchhiker and wind up in a backwoods horror chamber where they're held captive, tortured, chopped up, and impaled on meat hooks by a demented cannibalistic family, including a character known as Leatherface who maniacally wields one helluva chainsaw. The movie's powerful sense of dread is heightened by its grainy, semi-documentary style--but it also has a wicked sense of humor (and not that camp, self-referential variety that became so tiresome in subsequent horror films of the '70s, '80s, and '90s). OK, in case you couldn't tell, it's "not for everyone." Fans of this cult favorite can relax - no, they didn't gloss up the film stock with digital sheen to make it look as though it were filmed yesterday. To be certain, TCM was cleaned up: the colors are brighter and more vibrant, and the film's nocturnal sequences aren't quite as murky as they were in the VHS edition. But this minor buffing hasn't betrayed the film's gritty, low-budget, high-grain 16mm (as transferred to 35mm stock) aesthetic. The '70s zeitgeist isn't even remotely diminished, but the attractive wide shots (mostly rural Texan landscapes) are as eye-catching as ever. The only way to get a better look at this film is to obtain the original theatrical reels, cigarette burns and all!

I hardly need to explain a film that's become an B-movie legend, one of the most successful and notorious independent films in American cinematic history. The synopsis, in summary: a traveling group of well-intentioned young twenty somethings run afoul of a family of redneck cannibals, one of which wears human faces as masks and uses a certain popular power tool for hunting and butchering. Fans of this film know the rest, and newcomers don't need to know any more. Even though the sheer horror of this film has been overrated (as is that of most popular horror films), few low-budget slasher flicks provide as much excitement and black humor as this one. If you haven't seen this yet, there's no reason not to.

This DVD offers quite a few features for fans of TCM, Tobe Hooper and Gunnar Hansen. Prominent among these are the soundtrack selections. For standard viewing, the film's soundtrack can be heard as a crisp stereo surround track that's a bit bright, and as the film's original mono recording, which is blunt, a bit messy and preferable for anyone who wants a more authentic viewing experience. The third option is a conversational audio commentary voiced by Hooper, Hansen and cinematographer Daniel Pearl. For fans and film students alike, I couldn't recommend this feature more; it's informative and very funny. Unlike certain audio commentary tracks, which are very dry as a result of the participants being recorded independently, this one benefits from the interaction between director, actor and cinematographer, especially when the three are comparing memories and discussing related experiences of a film that they collaborated on almost thirty years prior to this recording.

The disc's deleted scenes and alternate footage aren't quite so essential, but they are of mild interest. All of them consist of raw, untreated footage. The clips that haven't any sound are supplemented with textual script extracts. I think that audio commentary tracks would have been preferable to the textual summaries provided for each clip. Yes, the infamous makeup scene is included.

One of the more interesting features is "A Study In Filming," which consists of every unedited shot that was used to film the twenty-second scene in which Leatherface commits his first on screen murder. Even though this is essentially filler, it is somewhat engrossing, as it illustrates how much footage is required for a heavily edited (albeit short) scene.

This disc would be far from complete without the theatrical and televised trailers for the 1974 Bryanston release and New Line Cinema's 1980 re-release. Both sets of trailers are adequate and stylistically representative of their respective periods of release. Although it was hardly necessary to include the ludicrous trailers of TCM's two awful sequels and the incomparably terrible remake, they do make for compulsive viewing. They may induce squirms in a state of embarrassed discomfort.

The blooper reel is short, but rather amusing. Although it's nice to know that the making of this film was sometimes as jocular as it was maddening, the finished product is much more hilarious.

Silent footage of the Family's house is included. This provides a more detailed perspective of the macabre interior art design that featured quite a few chicken and human bones. I needn't mention that this is strictly intended for fans.

The provided film and production stills are competently shot, but not terribly interesting. They're included for the sake of completeness.

On the other hand, the scanned lobby cards and posters are definitely worth a look. The cards are typical (and probably worth quite a bit on eBay), but the art design of the theater posters are especially interesting. The Italian, German and Japanese posters are especially attractive and evocative, and some of them implement a few photos and paintings that I've never seen before.

For hardcore fans of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," this is an essential purchase if they don't already have it. For the more casual fan of horror and '70s B-films, this is definitely worth a rental. For anyone with a weak stomach, stay away - the nausea that this film can produce lives up to its' cult legend!

Not a gorefest, but a real celluloid nightmare..........2007-06-04

This is as terrifying as you've heard. Whether you saw it on an old, faded VHS copy, or you saw it in the theater when it came out, or on a later, remasted edition, it is so relentless and claustrophobic that it is impossible to shed from your mind. The thing about this film that despite its reputation, it has hardly any gore in it. It is not a gorehound film, not even close. It runs along the lines of Night of the Living Dead, an independent horror film that is truly scary and disturbing. It's not a film in which you get a few scares and then some comic relief. It's a plain nightmare of a film, and even in the end when one of the captives escape, you're still scared like hell. It burns into your subconscious like only a handful of films do (Cannibal Holocaust, Night of the Living Dead, and Salo for example). It's a testament to the filmmaker, Tobe Hooper, for making such a great film that still can scare people today. Forget the sequels or the remakes: this is the only one you need to see.

i'm shaking my head.......2007-04-25

This movie feels so wrong and yet so right at the same time. It tortures your mind and brings out your fear but I still love it anyway. I'm glad I waited until I was 24 to watch this movie as it is that unsettling. I've never been so relieved that a movie was over not because I didn't like it but because I was so glad that the terror I was experiencing was finally over. I was exhausted when I got through with this film. It is my top 3 for scariest movies of all time. One of the best things about this movie is that there is very little blood. NOT recommend for kids as they WILL have nightmares.

I was in high school the first time I saw this movie...I watched it one day at 2 am thinking that it was gonna be just a gory lame kinda horror movie...When it was over, I was too scared to even want to turn off all the lights in the house and go up to bed...It scared the hell out of me...What I really loved about the movie was that since it was such a low budget film it looked too real(Unlike the crappy horror movies that come out now)...If you have never seen any of the TCM movies, this is the one to watch(the remake was ok)...

Since 1993's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the clan based on Japanese Super Sentai has changed twelve times, so it's tricky to keep up with characters and stories. Yet again, Gardiner has brought a work of art to the world of documentaries and involves us in a sinister world of manipulation and propoganda. He sets about telling us why we join secret societies and then runs through their existence - revealing a unique central core that links them all together. Shocking, beautiful, incredibly thought provoking - Gardiner does it again in my humble opinion. Well worth the money.

Fear of the Dark.......2007-03-18

What a surprise. I love a good scary movie!! This one was a sensational spooker. Far better than I ever expected. Do not miss it, if you like horror shows. I've seen a whole lot of scarry shows and very few are any good at all, but this movie will keep you glued to the screen. It has some really cool music to go with it,too. I searched all over for its theme, but I never found it. If you miss this show, you'll miss out on a great movie. I've never seen one quite like it.

Suspense, but no real horror...........2007-03-14

Im a big horror movie fan. This movie was ok. Nothing real special. To me, there was more suspense than actual horror. When i looked at the cover on this movie i thought it would be real scary, but once i saw it was nothing like that.

So movie is about this [...] kid who is afraid of the dark because he sees the "dark things" better known as the ugly, trenchcoat, hat wearing mummy looking things. One night, the parents leave him alone with his big brother and of course, theres a storm, all the lights go out, and the dark things start coming out.

Plot is ok. Seen it more than several times, but it was a little more modernized. Ok acting. Not too many characters so that was good. A lot of suspense in the film, that was nicely done. However, the actual scary things are shown about 2 or 3 times in the entire movie and its not that scary.

Overall, if you are a horror fan, be aware that this isnt going to freak you out to point where you cant sleep at night. Its more jumpy than anything. Ok movie, but nothing else.

After reading some very amusing reviews about Fear Of The Dark On Amazon, my friend and I being avid horror movie fans of B and grade A alike decided to buy it. Safe to say it wasn't as bad as some people made it out to be, it does have a few downfalls but it's PG-13 so give it a break, has a good but not solid story and a likable cast of characters.The younger brother Ryan is pretty much the hero of the story, scared as hell of the dark (and the things in it) and we for one thought the little boy not only ruled but he was probably the most realistic, some of the chemistry between the actors kind of flogs a little bit. There's a typical love story of boy really likes girl and the like, amusing enough Dale probably has more chemistry with his mother then the girl he likes while the little brother should seriously hold onto that phone number because those two actors probably had the best chemistry on screen.Dale seems to only honestly have chemistry between Ryan and himself, quite lovable for little brother and big brother, during scenes with Dale's own parents we got the feeling he was more like a babysitter then their son, and with the girl the crushing was believable but it was overall typical. (Could have done without Dale smoking, it showed up no where else in the movie but at least he tells Ryan it's bad for your health.)The Female lead is actually a first for us to like, she's believable and definately the heroine, she's not your typical airhead and overall we were rooting for her instead of hoping she got crushed by a ladder or something, while the little brother is definately more the hero, watching it will make you root and yell at the screen telling the characters to believe the poor kid. The parents are also likable, despite their little screen time and I found myself kind of wanting to see them in the film more.The monsters of the movie were pretty freaky long as you couldn't see them entirely, that was the downfall, the things in the dark really should have been kept half hidden till near the end of the movie. We watched it first in the daytime, which surprisingly made us jump at a few scenes and it was a little freakier in the night.Touching on things we even do as we get older, keeping all our limbs under the covers, throwing blankets over our heads, heck I still throw pillows over my head even when the lights on and look into the hallways to make sure nothings there. Giving it a second round was probably for the best, during the first round we didn't get a few things until the second.For example, you kind of wonder what is the point of the female lead and the stories she's telling, it's kind of like 'Is she only there for a plot ploy of love interest for teenage girl appeal?' well we came to understand exactly what it was, pay attention to the little boy who goes in the basement and then it comes together. She lends more to the film then it looks, it's just stuble. I would have liked to see the female lead with her little brother more too in flashbacks, it's best to pay attention and understand her dialouge...man the movie had more potential really.The storyline is good but probably not solid enough, it could have used a full two hours instead of eighty four minutes well as strange stories surrounding missing children, and the town being kind of haunted by them, Ryan seeing a therapist once or twice for a full effect but the story does well on it's own.One thing We'd like to see in a Evil Dead remake considering they are doing one and it was on the television in the movie (That gave it brownieee points!) is Kevin Zegers as the next Ash baby, he's doing so many horror movies and he's a good actor, he really should try for the role of Ash, he's even got the face for it. Yeah random, but I couldn't help but saying it. Overall, the movie is fun and cool enough to watch with your little siblings and bestmates, has a little spook and some laughs, keeps a realm of suspense, very little cursing, but don't expect hightime horror and gore. It's worth ten bucks for a horror fan or just someone who likes a little spook and smiles, just make sure to watch it in the dark for full effect and some cuddling wouldn't hurt. =P

Unexpected, I bought the movie becaused Kevin Zegers was in it. I do not like horror, and did not know what would happen in the movie. But there is no gore. Jesse James and Kevin Zegers both did outstanding jobs.

Not Bad For PG-13.......2006-03-05

Although this is not a true horror flick or slasher flick, it was good for being rated only PG-13. I've gotten into the habit of not renting PG-13 movies because I love the gore and violence and terror of true horror movies that are rated R. However, I rented this movie because the box made it look scary. There are some suspenseful scenes in this movie as we see a young boy who is terrified of the dark.No one understands his fears, even his parents. One night, while the parents went out, the young boy was left home with his older brother. Well, here comes a storm and the lights go out. We get to see monsters/ghosts appear during some pretty good lightning scenes. Without going on and on about the details, I'd just say that I'd recommend renting this film. I was pleasantly surprised for a PG-13 rating movie.

Lash La Rue Whips Toltec Zombies.......2005-07-14

This is a cool, hilarious and campy movie. Camera angles, and filming techniques are a little off. Lash La Rue "King of the Bullwhip" is about 63 years old and still commands the bullwhip. Some beautiful collegiate women rent a house in southern USA which belonged to an old Indian Shaman who had aquired the land of his people form the government prior to his passing. The land is haunted by spiriits of Toltec warriors who surface to taunt and torture the present occupants of this house. Lash La Rue comes to their rescue in classic Lash fashion. It is filled with unknown actors and relatively poor dialogue, but I enjoyed it and recommend it to any Lash La Rue fans. I plan to view it many more times.

entertaining movie about Vlad Tepes.......2007-01-29

While not as "real" as the film would have you believe, "Dark Prince" is an entertaining movie about Vlad the Impaler. While his connection to Stoker's Dracula has been exagerrated over the years, Vlad Tepes is a controversial and fascinating figure, and it is about time somone made a film about him.
Don't expect vampires. The cover art and trailer are very misleading. However, this is still a solid little film. If you like medieval action films, or just want to get a vague idea as to what the historic Vlad was like, this film comes recommended.

This film attempts to portray Vlad Dracul in a more realistic manner, as far as specific events are concerned, such as:

1. Rounding up traitors with the pretext of a drunken celebration, and then when all are pretty well enebriated, lighting the entire edifice aflame, thus ridding himself of possible antagonists to his reign.

2. Dining at The Field of The Impaled, while dipping his bread in a goblet filled with blood and wine. Enemies turning back to their countries fearing the man who is capable of such a fearsome spectacle.

3. The oft-times neglected fact that he also impaled women and children at times, depending upon their offense, in this case, for being "adulterous". In this sense, he was influenced by Judeo-christian moralism.

4. Another truism related that one could veritable leave gold on the streets, and it would not be stolen, for fear of the punishment. Criminals were often seen impaled and immolated on the streets, which acted as a perfect deterrent. He actually displayed elements of Lex Talionis - as a result, crime was just about nil.

5. Driving spikes into the skulls of Muslims who refused to remove their turbans. They should "keep their traditions in their own country".

As far as the characterization is concerned, the mane-haired Vlad Tepesh {Rudolf Martin} is presented herein in a more or less romantic manner, sans moustache, and often wearing leather. 'Mina' as "Lidia" {Jane March} remains sheltered, and goes insane upon her realization of the actual events occurring in the kingdom, who then begins to superstitiously adorn herself with a rosary and calls Vlad a "monster" {"Voevod"}. Upon her suicide, he has all the mirrors in the castle covered, thus the mythological connection with the vampire "unable" to view his own reflection. She is survived by Vlad Jr., who displays great potential for leadership through his own ruthlessness.

He encounters his traitorous younger brother on the battle field, and graciously spares his life instead of dispatching him, which he should have done, as well as his step-father, both of whom eventually prove to be major obstacles, from framing him, which lands him in prison for awhile, to attempts at assassination. Upon regaining the throne, he strikes a deal with Catholic King Janos {Roger Daltrey}, proclaiming that it does not matter to him under what banner he fights, so long as his rule continues, and thus, his own interests prevail.

He seemingly resurrects on a couple of occasions, which lends to the legend of physical Vampiric immortality, whose "soul" is unable to enter heaven or Hell, and is "condemned" to roam the earth in a state of the 'undead'; to which he remains thankful to the murderous priest, who himself meets his end via a heart attack - veritably scared to death. Quite a pleasing concluding scene, instead of the typical stake in the heart.

Because of his indestructability and military genius, he is accused of being an antichrist by the Orthodox clergy, which seems to amuse him, when all he wanted to accomplish was the glorification of his country and the preservation of his kingdom, both at which he succeeds.

I rather enjoyed this presentaion, where Vlad The Impaler relishes in his role as tyrant to his enemies, and savior to his people, who still hail him as a national hero, and expect his symbolic return in some form.

Overall, Dracula: The Dark Prince is an aesthetically-impressive film, as Dracula / Vampiric presentations tend to be quite elegant from environment to accoutrement to deportment, and is probably the closest adaptation to actual events in the life of this remarkable historical figure, certainly an unforgettably mighty warrior. who remains an inspiration.

In high school I did a report on the life of Vlad. The documentary book ended up being more of a comparing between Brahm's book and the true man behind the legends. Tidbits barely mentioned in the biographies I've read were openly shown in this movie about a man who lived and died while trapped between his beliefs, the dominate churches, warring lands, his own people and his prenotioned fate. A warrior in every way, it shows Tephesh at his best and his worst. I have rented it five times and intend to sit it in my collection soon beside Interview, To End All Wars and Contantine.

Love this MOVIE!!!.......2005-07-02

I think this is a dair production from a modest budget. Only if this movie was made for theaters, it would have been better. Rudolf Martin played a Vlad Dracula like never before. This movie potraits Vlad not only as a Messiah, but as a man who devotes to his family and country. I love the music from the film. It IS SUCH a DISGRACE there is no information on the soundtracks.

The Real Dracula.......2004-12-31

I want to say that I was born in Transylvania, Romania, and moved to the states when I was 3. I was astonished to find a movie based on the historical figure of Dracula. This movie was great! I know most people think of Dracula as an evil tyrant, but its untrue. He was/is a hero to Romanian people. He did NOT stake innocent people, he punished only those that stole, killed and deserved it. He helped the sick, innocent and poor. He fought for the weak. He was a brilliant general and a loving father. This movie portrays him pretty well, and I'm glad it was shot in Romania, where people can see its a beautiful place. I would definetly recommend this for people interested in facts.

Not what I expected.......2007-06-21

I'm facinated by English history and I've studied it quite a bit; I bought this DVD out of interest and also because I'm a visual learner and I find that it's easier to learn something if you can put a face to it.

Well, this DVD is a good buy for the novice who knows nothing about English history and knows no names besides Henry VIII and Elizabeth I; for anyone with more knowledge, skip this DVD because you will gain nothing from watching it.

It's only 50 min in length and covers from about 878 to 1603. I found it very interesting that the only queen consorts that it mentioned were Isabella of France (the treacherous wife of Edward II) and the 6 wives of Henry VIII (undoubtably the most famous, but what about Eleanor of Aquitaine, Eleanor of Castile, or Elizabeth Woodeville?)
The DVD also only refers to the kings by their names (i.e. Edward I, better known as 'Longshanks' but this isn't even mentioned in the DVD).

This DVD isn't terrible by any means, but it's for beginners to English history and not really suppletmental viewing to those who already know quite a bit about it.

A good basic introduction to the first kings and queens of England. Uses too much "repeat" footage for my taste, but doesn't do a bad job with basics.

Landau Horror Classic.......2007-01-28

This is actually the best movie of all of Martin Landau's horror flicks. It's quite well made, features some appealing cinematography and direction, a much better script than most other similar films, and a lot of strong performances (Pleasance, Palance and a delightfully scenery-chewing Landau - "I made the lights go out!"). Not as much fun (in the cheesy sense) as others like "The Being", but a much better straight-forward horror film. The opening sequence is a surrealistic classic! Definitely recommended.

"Alone in the Dark" is one of those movies that you expect a lot from because of the cast, but it just never gets off the ground. Donald Pleasance, Martin Landau and Jack Palance star in "Alone in the Dark" and none of them could save it. In fact, you could argue that they really didn't try to...let's be fair as this movie is not one of Jack Palance's, Donald Pleasance's, and Martin Landau's best performances. Also, some of the other actors in this movie were atrocious.

"Alone in the Dark" is about a group of psychopaths that escape from a mental institution. The electricity goes out in the entire town and these maniacs go out on the loose. Their doctor, played by Donald Pleasance, attempts to stop them...what eventually occurs is stand-off where a family attempts to fend off the psychopaths who have attempted to infiltrate their home. Because the electricity is out, this is supposed to make the situation that much scarier.

Well, maybe, this movie could have worked under another director with a bit more vision and touch, but for one reason or another, "Alone in the Dark" does not work. This movie is undynamic and is severely lacking in style and substance. The atmosphere produced by this movie is largely ineffective and what you ultimately get is an inferior horror movie. The scenes do not move well and are without any real sense of fluidity, and any suspense that is built in the movie fails to gain any momentum as a result of this lack of fluidity, poor structural development and a thorough lack of rising action or even a climax of which the movie can hang its hat on so to speak. "Alone in the Dark" is the classic "dud" which just fails to do anything for the intelligent horror movie audience. "Alone in the Dark" is bland, plain and uninspiring as a horror movie or otherwise. Quite frankly and simply put, "Alone in the Dark" will leave you very alone with your boredom.

A dog........2006-06-29

Alone in the Dark (Jack Sholder, 1982)

The fact the over half of Alone in the Dark takes place in broad daylight should tell you most of what you need to know about this dog. It tries to be a cross between The Desperate Hours, Night of the Living Dead, and Straw Dogs, and manages to fail at imitating any of them with any sort of competence.

Dan Potter (Dwight Schultz) is the new doctor at Haven Hospital, run by the rather loose nut Leo Bain (Donald Pleasance). Bain is trying to cure violent offenders with just therapy in a hospital whose entire security system is electric. Then comes the inevitable blackout, and the escape of the four most violent felons in the place-- Byron the Preacher (Martin Landau), the arsonist; Ronald Elster (Stir Crazy's Erland van Lidth), the child molester; Skaggs, the Bleeder (character actor PhilipClark); and their leader, Frank Hawkes (Jack Palance). They know where Potter lives. You can guess the rest.

Alone in the Dark is notable for having, possibly, the largest plot hole in modern film (explain how a doctor doesn't recognize one of his patients for an entire day, if you'd be so kind). It is also noticeable for having two normally wonderful actors, Landau and Palance, give the worst performances either ever managed to come up with. As well, you have a script that lets four psychopaths loose on society-- a wonderful concept with which wonders can be done (viz. The Dream Team)-- and Sholder uses it just as a plot device. Come to think of it, he does that with just about every angle he could have used to give any depth whatsoever to this film. The end result can't even be called a mindless action flick; it doesn't have enough action. Some nifty special effects by Tom Savini and a fun soundtrack by the Sic F***s are about the only reasons you'd want to check this out. * ½

first off 1 star because you can't give no stars!! THIS IS ONE OF THE DUMBEST AND SILLY HORROR MOVIES EVER MADE . IT REALLY STINKS AND I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY BOTHERED TO PUT IT ON DVD. NOT SCARY,NOT FUNNY, JUST THE WORST!!!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY ANYTHING BUT THIS PIECE OF JUNK!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Jack Palance Wants You!!!.......2006-01-07

What can be scarier than being stuck Alone In The Dark with Martin Landau and Jack Palance? This film attempts to answer that question and does a fine job. I'm a huge nut for any B horror picture, and it's nice sometimes to actually see some real star power in them. Granted, Landau and Palance weren't at the highest point in their careers when they did this. The film has Dwight Schultz, who you may remember as Murdock in the A-Team, as a new therapist at an asylum run by Psychiatrist, Donald Pleasance(who smokes pot in his office). "The men on the 3rd floor" are the extremely dangerous lunatics who decide to kill Murdock coz they believe he has murdered their former therapist. There are 4 central killers-First is Marin Landau as "Preacher", a bible quoting psycho. He's fantastic in this part. Palance is the paranoid Vietnam vet named Hawkes, who is basically the ringleader. He doesn't have alot of lines, but since it's Jack Palance, he's wonderfully creepy and convincing. The third is played by Erland van Lidth as a child molester who is childlike himself. You may remember Erland as the opera singing Roman Stalker in The Running Man("Cut! Cut! Go to commercial!!"). The fourth is rarely seen and this makes him interesting. Since his face is always off camera, a name actor isn't necessary. He's called The Bleeder, and comes off as the most dangerous of the 4 coz he doesn't speak and at one point pre-dates Jason Voorhees by wearing a hockey mask. Donald Pleasance is awfully nutty and funny in his role of the doctor. In fact, you start to wonder if he's actually a mental patient himself. Schultz is decent as the straight man, a far cry from his Murdock character. This film starts and builds up wonderfully. It has a fantastic buildup to the point where it becomes like Night Of The Living Dead with Schultz and his family trapped inside their home during a blackout with the band of crazies outside. Unfortunately the film falls kinda flat here. With such a good buildup and collection of characters, you expect alot more out of this confrontation than you get. It's actually kinda boring and not very intense at all. Despite this shortcoming, the film is well worth watching for the performances.
