Sometimes a movie achieves such legendary status that it can't quite live up to its reputation. Plan 9 from Outer Space is not one of these movies. It is just as magnificently terrible as you've heard. Plan 9 is the story of space aliens who try to conquer the Earth through resurrection of the dead. Psychic Criswell narrates ("Future events such as these will affect you in the future!") as police rush through the cemetery, occasionally clipping the cardboard tombstones in their zeal to find the source of the mysterious goings-on. More than just a bad film, Plan 9 is something of a one- stop clearinghouse for poor cinematic techniques: The time shifts whimsically from midnight to afternoon sun, Tor Johnson flails desperately in an attempt to rise from his coffin, and flying saucers zoom past on clearly visible strings. Fading star Bela Lugosi tragically died during filming, but such a small hurdle could not stop writer-producer-director Ed Wood. Lugosi is ingeniously replaced with a man who holds a cape across his face and might as well have "NOT BELA LUGOSI" stamped on his forehead. Plan 9 is so sweetly well- intentioned in both its message and its execution that it's impossible not to love it. And if you don't, well, as Eros says, "You people of Earth are idiots!" --Ali Davis

Description

Plan 9 From Outer Space Cult Director Ed Wood's "cinematic masterpiece" _ and also regarded as one of the worst movies ever made! Plan Nine is so bad it's good. Alien invaders use their dreaded "Plan Nine" to re-animate dead earthlings. They wreak havoc and unleash a host of things bizarre, macabre, horrific, and just plain horrible. Using footage from a Bela Lugosi movie he was unable to finish (due to Lugosi's untimely death), Wood proved again he would and could make a film under any circumstances. Hubcaps on wires doubling for flying saucers, stumbling living dead, concrete visible beneath fake grass, and mattresses visible for actors to fall on are just a few of the unbelievable gaffes and goofs you'll see. The result is a comical and campy spoof of science fiction movies themselves. The cast includes TV horror queen Vampira, a host of zombies, military buffoons, and Lugosi in his last performance. Plan Nine has taken on a legendary status of its own and is a MUST for any serious cult film fan. Original Theatrical Trailer: 2 min. Film: Approx. 80 min.

Bonus Material: The Ed Wood Story Hear the story of "Hollywood's best incompetent director" from the people who knew him best and who starred in the film about him. Johnny Depp, who played Ed, and Martin Landau, who won an Oscar for playing Bela Lugosi, talk about Mr. Wood and his legendary style _ or lack thereof, as well as Lugosi. Dolores Fuller, Wood's wife and star of several of his classics, talks about the man and his methods. Maila Nurmi, Vampira herself, talks about the creation of her persona. Johnny Legend recalls Tor Johnson. And Bela Lugosi, Jr. clues you into some of the mysteries about his father. ORIGINAL TRAILERS from Wood classics include Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster, Sinister Urge, The Bride and the Beast, and Plan Nine from Outer Space. Approx. 40 min.

3 out of 5 stars So bad, it's almost good.......2007-07-03

To fully appreciate this movie you must be totally unimpressed with the acting, costumes, sets, et cetera. You have to laugh at the extra cheesy monsters. This will slump below most other cheesy monsters and bad acting you have seen before. After all it received a couple turkey awards. It takes a special patience to sit through this entire movie. I myself don't have it. I can only take a few minutes of it. To me bad is bad, and this movie is bad. If you find bad entertaining then more power to you. I just find bad to be bad which tends to grate on my nerves. So if you find bad to be good, I certainly respect those that can fully appreciate it. It is a true cult SciFi masterpiece turkey of schlocky B movies.

1 out of 5 stars All you of Earth are idiots!.......2007-06-26

A race of aliens are tired of the "stupid, stupid" Earthlings claiming that aliens don't exist, so they concoct a brilliantly evil plan. First, they fly around in their flying saucers that are "shaped like huge cigars" (??) and fiendishly shine lights in people's faces. Second, they raise three random people from the dead, taking care not to let anyone know they are responsible for this (It could blow their cover.) The dead people, acting on the orders of the aliens, wander aimlessly around a graveyard. One of them even goes into a nearby house and horrifies a woman by walking slowly and staring at her. Finally, the aliens cleverly reveal their entire plan to a trio of snoopers who manage to find their ship (It was hidden behind a tree.) They explain to the Earthlings that they fear Earth will one day discover how to make a Solaranite bomb that will explode the sun. Then they explain to the Earthlings exactly how the Solaranite bomb works. This is why they have to destroy us before we destroy them which will ultimately prove to us that they exist... or something. But there's one thing that these highly advanced aliens didn't count on: three of the Earthlings might resist somewhat.

"Plan 9 From Outer Space" is Ed Wood's masterpiece and is considered by most to be the worst film ever made. Even Criswell couldn't have predicted the cult popularity it has gained. Bela Lugosi died shortly after filming began so the majority of his scenes are played by a look-alike who looks nothing like him. The dialogue is awkward and nonsensical, the set looks like it was borrowed from an elementary school play, and the acting makes Keanu Reeves look like Sir Lawrence Olivier. Listing all the continuity errors would take longer than the film's running time. The only thing that could have made the film worse would have been to include Dolores Fuller.

All in all, "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen, a triumph of will over talent.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than King, Laymon And The Pet Shop Boys!.......2007-04-29

Critics have often called this "The Worst Film Ever Made" and I really don't think it lives up to that reputation. In this movie you have my fellow Hungarian countryman Bela Lugosi who women used to swoon over when he played Dracula and the incredibly HOT Vampira. A lot of this movie is set in a cemetary which is obligatory for any good Horror Film. If given the choice I would rather watch this movie than try to read one of Stephen King's bloated , overwritten books. I keep on getting abusive Emails about my reviews. One of them is from an illiterate guy who thinks that Stephen King is "God", another is a fan of the Pet Shop Boys and I have one woman writing to me who is in love with David Koresh. So I guess I must be doing something right.5 stars for this film.

5 out of 5 stars Ed Wood Saved The Universe.......2007-03-11

Ed Wood's masterpiece, made with a low budget and filmed under trying conditions, is the greatest movie in the history of mankind. Bela Lugosi (whose reanimated corpse grew a foot taller), Vampira and Tor Johnson comprised the zombie army that was going to march on the capitals of the world. The alien Leader (John "Bunny" Breckinridge) had Bela's reanimated corpse destroyed, in order to strike fear in the humans, as opposed to some world leaders, who would have called for more troops. In the world of Plan 9, such outdated concepts as day and night, the living and the dead, and original footage and stock footage, have no meaning. But I have yet to reveal the true greatness of this movie.

The alien Eros (Dudley Manlove) explains that his mission on Earth is to destroy us before we develop the Solaranite bomb. His metaphorical explanation of the Solaranite bomb is chilling. "Take a can of your gasoline. Say this can of gasoline is the sun. Now, you spread a thin line of it to a ball, representing the earth. Now, the gasoline represents the sunlight, the sun particles. Here we saturate the ball with the gasoline, the sunlight. Then we put a flame to the ball. The flame will speedily travel around the earth, back along the line of gasoline to the can, or the sun itself. It will explode this source and spread to every place that gasoline, our sunlight, touches. Explode the sunlight here, gentlemen, you explode the universe!" America, Russia and China were all working on developing a Solaranite bomb when this movie was released. All work on that was stopped, and all records were destroyed, shortly afterwards. To quote Criswell, "Can you prove that it didn't happen?"

4 out of 5 stars And to Think, Plans 1-8 Were Even Worse.......2007-02-22

By far the worst acted, cheesiest, most stilted piece of celluloid toilet paper I've ever seen. A true alien race would erase mankind in a nanosecond if it ever watched this movie.

And it was great! So bad in every way it's howlingly funny, with Criswell's solemn inanities bookending the movie. I saw a public screening of the show with a comedy improv group providing additional dialogue throughout. This movie should be on everyone's must-see list of the classics.

The Stephen King Collection, a box set of four films, Graveyard Shift, The Dead Zone, Silver Bullet, and Pet Sematary, is great in that it provides viewers with a full range of King movies, from the truly eerie to the terrible. The set's two finest movies, The Dead Zone, directed by David Cronenberg and starring Christopher Walken, and Pet Sematary--arguably King's finest story adapted to film--both come as Special Collector's Editions, with excellent bonus material, including lengthy interviews with both Stephen King and the directors. Pet Sematary, shot in King's home territory, Maine, tells the story of city slickers Rachel and Louis Creed (Denise Crosby, Dale Midkiff), who move to the country to raise their daughter, Ellen, in peace. They learn that they've relocated onto a trucking thoroughfare, and Ellen consequently loses her pet cat. The plot quickly riffs out into mystical, traumatic territory. Louis's neighbor Jud Crandall takes Louis to ancient Indian burial grounds, where the dead are reanimated. The Creeds's zombie cat sparks this Frankenstein-ian adventure, pitting urban settings against rural, and the horrific against the pastoral. Pet Sematary looks more and more like Hitchcock, thanks to director Mary Lambert's careful attention to detail. The low point in the set is Graveyard Shift, a washed-up story about a cotton factory that's not only infested by carnivorous rats, but also hosts a dragon/pterodactyl. As night-shift employees get continuously munched, Bachman Mills' owner Mr. Warwick is forced to clean up squalid conditions, for which he hires a basement clean-up crew. Crew members are slaughtered as they try to combat their discovered behemoth, and grizzly scenes showing rats, humans, and the beast's head being chewed up in the cotton gin reduce Graveyard Shift to schlock gore. One is reminded of the intricacies involved in adapting books to film. As King has managed to be an integral part of his film projects, there are still successes and failures. All the movies in this set, though, still bear King's trademark, a love for "supernatural deadfall." --Trinie Dalton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection of King Movies.......2007-03-19

Certainly, my opinion is subjective because I like this sort of fare, silly and all. "Graveyard Shift" is indeed the weakest one, made entertaining by the bad acting of all involved. "Pet Sematary" is also badly acted, though Fred Gwynne is on hand to save much of it. It's one of King's more mean-spirited plots, and if there was humor involved (as the extras purport), I missed most of it. "Silver Bullet" is an odd film, a rather sweet coming-of-age film with a twist. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. (Even Corey Haim was almost tolerable.) And, of course, the special edition of "The Dead Zone" stands way above the rest. Fine acting and direction help secure its place among the best King films. Save it for last...OK, some are silly and mindless, but I like most horror films for that very reason. This collection has the added benefit of a couple of winners. The widescreen transfer is excellent. The price is good. I recommend it...all 4 are true to King, inasmuch as they all take place in Maine.

4 out of 5 stars Two five star movies, one four star movie, and one stinker........2006-10-10

I give five stars for The Dead Zone and Silver Bullet. I give four stars to Pet Semetary. Zero stars go to Graveyard Shift. All in all, it is a good set that is worth the price for three of the films. Just buy it for The Dead Zone, Silver Bullet, and Pet Semetary.

3 out of 5 stars Throw "Sweet Insanity", "Madhouse" and "See No Evil" into a blender and pour out "Boo!".......2007-02-03

For a straight-to-dvd, this is not a bad horror movie. It is somewhere between "Sweet Insanity", "Madhouse" and "See No Evil". The acting is pretty bad, but it doesn't detract too much from the story. There are some good special effects here and there, along with some genuine scary parts.

The story takes too long to move along and gets confusing when it goes too many places at once. This is especially true towards the end. Trish Coren reminded me a little bit of Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, which probably isn't the best thing for a horror movie. But, she's cute and with some acting lessons could go places. The same is not true of the rest of the cast. Even flawed, it's worth a rental.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good ghost story.......2006-12-26

The only things in the negative was that some of the acting wasn't that great, and the ending was a little forced. But, for a low budget film, they did an excellent job in making it creepy. The special effects were top notch. There are a few scares throughout that made me jump or squirm. This one is worth yout time and $$

5 out of 5 stars Different horror movie.......2006-11-30

I really liked this movie. Not only is it different in the story, but it takes place in a real psychiatric hospital that is haunted. Look up the "Linda Vista Hospital" where the movie is filmed on the net. It is great!! Ok, the movie did start out a little corney and slow, but it really took of in the middle and the end. Great story and good acting!!! Highly recommended!!!

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2006-10-24

BOO has to be the worst horror movie I have seen in a long time. Poorly conceived, badly acted (and, boy, is the acting BAD), atrociously written, sloppily directed and lacking anything approaching a genuine sense of atmosphere, this film has virtually nothing to recommend it. There are occasional (VERY occasional) glimpses of the film that might have been, but every opportunity is wasted and all we're left with is ninety tedious minutes of teenage histrionics and unnecessary (and unconvincing) gore. Even some of the potentially disturbing imagery (not to mention the presence of Dee Wallace Stone - oh, how careers can plummet!) cannot save it. The one thought I came away with at the end is 'How do people with so little talent and aptitude actually get the opportunity and funding to make a film like this in the first place?' I guess that's one of life's more baffling mysteries, that and the assumption on the part of film makers that horror fans will accept any old rubbish. Avoid this film like the plague. It is truly, truly dreadful.

2 out of 5 stars A Sad Mess Filled With Missed Opportunities & Lots Of Potential.......2006-10-22

I give this hack job the extra star for the fact that it had some very creepy visuals a handful of jumpy scares & a good idea for a story. How sad is it though when that kind of potential can't crutch the horrible outcome, wich resides in plot-hole central USA,home of the university of bad acting & laughable endings(UBALE). Oh man! Horror fans! "BOO" could have been an excellent new low-budget horror flick if it had a tighter script with a much better ending & included some half decent actors who actually had a grip on there character's. All & all what we are left with is an all over the place mess with some good visuals & scares. So many missed opportunities & so much potential lost. What a sad waste!

Description

This is it! The most popular Atomic Age cult film of the twentieth century. Winner of two Golden Turkey Awards for Worst Picture and Worst Director of All Time, the immortal Edward D. Wood, Jr.! It's all here, the not-so-special effects, aliens in skating skirts zooming around in string-powered flying saucers to implement the ninth plan of Earth's conquest (the first eight failed) with an army of zombies (well, three actually), Vampira, Tor Johnson and Bela Lugosi in his legendary "postmortem" performance (with Ed's chiropractor standing in for Bela after his death). This truly original movie, Ed Wood's "Citizen Kane," is a hymn to all those who have ever tried to create something intelligent and meaningful, only to fail miserably every step of the way.

Description

Stephen King took you to the edge with The Shining and Pet Sematary. This time... he pushes you over. From horror master Stephen King comes his most terror-filled take yet. Gates Falls, Maine. When an abandoned textile mill is reopened, several employees meet mysterious deaths. The link between the killings: all occurred between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. - the Graveyard Shift. The sadistic mill foreman (Stephen Macht) has chosen a group to clean up the mill's rat-infested basement. But what the workers find is a subterranean maze of tunnels leading to the cemetery - and an unimaginable horror that comes alive in the dead of the night.

4 out of 5 stars Rats in the Walls.......2007-06-19

A drifter is looking for a new start and applies for a job at a mill in a small town. Conditions at the mill are not great but work is work. The foreman is a total jerk and get off on wielding his power. But things really start to get bad when a crew is sent to clean out the mill's basement. Due to the heat, work is done at night. The whole mill is infested with rats but there is something else lurking in the dark.

As the work progresses cleaning out the basement, it becomes clear that there is more to the mill. A trapdoor leads into another level showing where the mill used to run on river power. This level leads to other spaces and caves. It soon becomes apparent that there is something very deadly lurking down in the dark. The crew's numbers drop quickly and it becomes a race to survive. What lurks in the dark? Who will get away? Will the creature be stopped? Watch and find out.

This is one of the earlier Stephen King films and it is based on one of his creepier stories. Unfortunately the set design leaves a little to be desired. For instance, the old water wheel's bottom is in workspace inside the building. I have no idea how water was ever supposed to get to the wheel and turn it. But the story holds together well even if some of the scenery needs some continuity work. The creature is scary and characters colorful and interesting. Really one of the better Stephen King adaptations. Check it out.

1 out of 5 stars What Garbage!.......2006-10-10

I do not know why Stephen King let this trash be made. Read the short story instead and avoid this film.

4 out of 5 stars You retards!.......2006-08-06

People just don't understand what's going on here. None of his movie's are supposed to be like the book because what would be the point in going to watch them!In other word's they wouldn't be able to sell the book & vise versa.they want it to be a whole different story they just use some idea's from the book. moron's!

1 out of 5 stars poor mr. king, will they ever get one of his short stories right??.......2006-06-06

so bad that i will just say this, read the book night shift and find out what this movie should of and could of been!!! skip this mess!!

3 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT REALLY THAT BAD.......2005-07-09

Graveyard Shift is always high on the list of bad Stephen King films but I don't think it's all that bad. I have the advantage of never having read the story so I have no point of reference to compare it to, which helps I think. As most King movies do, this one is set in Maine, Gates Falls specifically. David Andrews is John Hall, a drifter who blows into town, looking for work. Well there's basically just one business to work at, and that's the old, decrepit textile mill that pretty much supports the town.

The mill is run by the hard-nosed, and sadistic Warwick (Stephen Macht) who hires Andrews to run a machine that can only be run at night due to the high summer heat. Andrews is alone in a dingy, dungeon of a room running his machine and encountering rats...lots of rats that even get inside the bags of cotton he's loading into the machine. Here he meets Tucker the exterminator, played by Brad Douriff with his usual flair for offbeat characters.

Soon Warwick volunteers several employees for the unenviable task of cleaning the basement. The basement makes the upper levels look like a palace, as its filled with water throughout its maze-like halls. But the little group soon finds themselves hunted by a very nasty creature.

Is Graveyard Shift a classic? heck no! But it does have some very heavy atmostphere. If you're the least bit claustrophobic the Mill's basement will really give you the creeps. It's got solid performances, especially from the over-bearing Macht. The creature may not be the greatest but you can do far worse on the video shelves than this film.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Puppets and Plot.......2005-02-08

This Full Moon film is pretty lame. For a while you had an idea what to expect from Full Moon but this one is definitely below par for them.

Six young people are mysteriously drawn to an old farmhouse. The first five determine that they can not leave. But once the sixth arrives they can traipse off to a hidden cemetery. There they find a strange statue of three strange creatures. For some reason they all think it looks like a totem pole and not three boxes stacked up.

As the story unfolds, they discover that half of them are supposed to kill the other half. Each death will animate one of the creatures. That is unless they can find a way to thwart the powers controlling them.

The people in the film are like any other group of teens, except they act decidedly urban although they are supposedly from the surrounding countryside. The tallest has a European accent but is obviously Native American (obvious to the other characters, that is). He can understand ancient dialects. The creatures barely move and are some of the worst effects I have seen in ages. The ending is abrupt and poorly explained. The DVD itself is bare bones. The menu has two option, Play and Trailers (5 movies including Totem). This is definitely the worst movie I have seen from Full Moon and those who missed it didn't miss anything.

1 out of 5 stars The only way to describe this movie............2004-12-28

...is that it flat out sucks. I mean I love bad B rated movies, but this is not one of those so bad it's good, or so bad it's entertaining, this movie is so bad it sucks sucks sucks.

The acting is atrocious even on this level. The directing was awful. The camera angles and shots for the little demons was so bad that the little buggers got boring every time they were on the screen. You just wait for this movie to be over and if you make it to the end, well you basiclly accomplished wasting your time. You can't even tell your friends you watched this the whole way through, because they've never heard of it. If they have heard of it, they'll think you're too lazy to shut off the TV.

The gist of it in a nutshell is this. Six strangers are summoned to a cabin in the middle of nowhere. There is an 'invisible force wall' keeping them within the grounds of the cabin. They discover a graveyard with a granite totem pole with three ugly and incredibly stupid looking imps. There is an Indian among the six that knows nothing about Indians, but yet he can translate the mumbling of a girl who got a hatchette to the chest. Follow me on this, you just have to watch it.

So three must be a killer and three must be a victim. Over and over and over again we are told that the totem devils control their movements. So a guy kills a girl, then a girl kills a guy, this leaves the Indian dude and the best looking of the three females. The killers are dragged out of the cabin by demons.

The anti-climax is stupid and if you've made it this far, you are bored to tears by now and are praying for the ending. So the victims now kill their killers and the Indian dude doesn't kill the chick he was supposed to kill.

Not the zombies coming out of the ground. Aren't you supposed to bury someone six feet deep? The demons rise out of six inches of dirt. They have no purpose in the story, but then again you really won't care.

This movie is a waste of time, effort, and should never have existed. I will never see this again no matter what and I hope this has warned enough people to do something constructive with an hour and 15 minutes instead of watching this.

Once again I just have to say, this sucks.

5 out of 5 stars Graveyard Alive Rules!!.......2007-06-06

This movie has a somewhat familiar story line, a kindly woodcutter and Zombie bites a plain Jane nurse causing her to metamorphose into a real knock-out. Our zombie-ized nurse takes on her rival, and pursues the handsome Dr. Dox. She is nearly thwarted when the charmingly suspicious old world custodian discovers the real truth about her. There are some hysterical scenes in the film and I find myself replaying it over and over gain. The black-and-white really added to the overall effect in my view. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a Graveyard Alive 2! This is a really fun movie and definitely worth all 5 stars!!

I have seen this director's films over the years at various indy film fesitvals. Elza Kephart is one of a kind. Her films have a very unique and refreshing style - pure artistic genius. Anything directed or written by Kephart is a must for dark humor/kitschy horror film fans. On a whim, I typed her name into Amazon to see if anything was available on DVD - so glad to add Graveyard Alive to my collection!

Bee girls by nature, maybe, but not by cup size. Price Is Right model Anitra Ford anchors this enjoyably sleazy horror movie about women who mate... and kill! Also, they get naked a lot. After a State Department employee meets a mysterious motel death, agent Agar (Marlboro Man William Smith) heads to Peckham, CA, to investigate. Soon, highly unattractive middle-aged men are falling victim to beautiful young women as quickly as they can drop trou. The women look completely normal except that they all wear huge sunglasses even in the dark (hmmm...) and are frequently naked. One could do a tidy thesis on how this 1973 marvel reflected male fears of newly independent women--sexual and career independence seem to lead directly to lesbianism and lethal coitus. (Screenwriter Nicholas Meyer also wrote Fatal Attraction.) But why bother intellectualizing when you can just lie back and let the bad sex puns and horrific '70s soundtrack wash over you? And try not to worry about why that one woman is naked on her motorcycle. --Ali Davis

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars "Just think about it boys...coming and going at the same time.".......2006-12-01

Graveyard Tramps (1973) aka Invasion of the Bee Girls...I have no idea where the alternate title `Graveyard Tramps' came from, but it's pretty awful in terms of not being relatable to the film since it implies something completely different than what the feature actually is, a really goofy mad scientist type movie (Graveyard Tramps implies to me zombie prostitutes). I will say there is a bit in a graveyard (a short funeral sequence) and plenty of seemingly trampy female characters, but the original title is much more applicable. Directed by Denis Sanders (Shock Treatment), the film stars Anitra Ford (The Big Bird Cage), an original `The Price is Right' model, and William Smith (Any Which Way You Can, Hell Comes to Frogtown), probably best known for his late 1960s/early 1970s motorcycle drive-in flicks Run, Angel, Run (1969), Nam's Angels (1970), and Chrome and Hot Leather (1971). Also appearing is former Playmate of the Year (1968) Victoria Vetri (When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth), Cliff Osmond (Sweet Sugar), Anna Aries (The Omega Man), and Jack Perkins (Night Shift).

Something odd is going down in the small town of Peckham, California, specifically seemingly healthy men are turning up dead due to heart attacks induced by too much copulating (of all the ways to bite it, death between the sheets don't sound all that bad...). Anyway, one of the corpses is a scientist who works at a gooberment funded research facility, so in the name of national security, some uppity ups in Washington send along special agent Neil Agar (Smith) to see what's what. Upon arriving Neil checks in with the local sheriff named Captain Jim Peters (Osmond) before heading out to the research facility and hooking up with a top-heavy blonde scientist named Julie Zorn (Vetri). More bodies begin turning up, and Neil learns most of the scientists entertain themselves during the off hours by swapping wives and such...it's a groovy scene, man...anyway, Neil, unsure if the recent spate of unexplained deaths are due to some form of virulent venereal disease, decides to quarantine the town (the military shows up to block the roads), and one scientist suggests those still among the living practice abstinence until the root cause is determined, which doesn't go down well with the local yokels (apparently the town offers little in the way of leisure activities). The bodies continue to pile up and Neil eventually gets a lead on a leggy scientist named Dr. Susan Harris (Ford), whose work involves something to do with bees. As it turns out, she's been busy creating a legion of comely automaton creatures, complete with black eyeballs, for reasons as yet undisclosed, who have a penchant for shacking up with the local male population and sexing them up to death. The good news is they don't seem all that picky about whom they bed, the downside being whomever they hook up with ends up taking a dirt nap (there's always a catch). Eventually Neil gets the goods on Harris and her Foster Grant sunglasses wearing, honeybee cabal, but it may be too late as Harris and her minions continue their `pollinating' ways...

While this film suffers in a number of different ways (goofy plot, low production values, intermittent storyline), it excels generally in being just a whole lot of fun, especially if you dig on bargain basement science fiction...oh yeah, it also has a whole lot of female nekkidness, something which I wasn't really expecting, but it certainly helped in terms of keeping my attention. Every main female character (along with quite a few minor ones) gets nekkid at some point or other, offering up a generous helping of sleaze, something I can appreciate especially given some of the women appearing in the film. Perhaps the most delectable was Anitra Ford (check out them gams) as at one point she performs a striptease prior to putting it to one lucky, soon to be deceased, male character. There's another scene, one involving the Bee women transforming a recent widow into one of their own, and after the process a number of them start opening their shirts and fondling themselves in almost ritualistic fashion. Whoever cast William Smith in this film deserves some credit as he brings along a lot of experience given his extensive work within the world of low budget films. The man has undeniable appeal and a definite screen presence, enough so to make me wonder why he never really moved into the realm super stardom. Perhaps it was for the best, as talents helped in adding a certain amount of credibility towards any number of low budget features that would have suffered in his absence. As far as the rest of the performers, they were good enough given the material, perhaps a couple who stood out more than most for me being character actor Cliff Osmond (who played the sheriff) and Anitra Ford, who's incredibly beautiful. The latter may have not won any awards for her abilities (in terms of acting), but I did feel there was more to her than just a pretty face and a smoking body. I think another thing that helped this movie a lot was it felt like the filmmakers never really took anything too seriously. The production seems pretty loose, which actually works here, at least in my opinion. And I'll say this, some of the science aspects of the story actually sounded realistic, even if the transformation process was hokey as hell. I did feel the feature could have used a little more action, especially given the fact William Smith was the main, male character, but whatever...

It appears there are a few, different DVD releases by a few, different companies, out there of this film, but the one I have is the one released by Brentwood Home Video. The picture, presented in fullscreen (1.33:1), is shoddy and murky, especially during the scenes that occur at night. The audio, on the other hand, comes across well. There aren't any extras, but there are all of about six chapter stops. I noticed one of the other DVD releases lists prominently on the cover that Claudia Jennings stars in the film, but that's a mistake as she doesn't appear anywhere in the film, as far as I can tell.

By the way, I really enjoyed end credit sequence, as displayed are visuals of bees flying about some flowers, all to the tune of Also Sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spake Zarathustra), the theme featured in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). It felt fitting in a way I'm unable to describe.

5 out of 5 stars This film deserves a remake!.......2006-09-01

Invasion of the Bee Girls (aka Graveyard Tramps) is one of my favourite sci-fi films from the 1970s. It is a genre-bending film that includes detective fiction elements, feminist overtones, and mild horror schlock. The feminist elements may not be obvious to the casual viewer, but the plot element of housewives turning into bee girls, and then doing a fatal number on the men of the city truly makes it a girl-power movie!

2 out of 5 stars Just another boring '70s movie.......2006-07-04

First off, the name of the movie and the cover art are completely misleading - this has nothing to do with any sort of "Graveyard", and if they wanted to give you an idea of what you'll see inside, they would have put a grainy, washed out picture of a typical '70s housewife on the cover. This is a really boring '70s detective drama about a rash of deaths in a small town. Some FBI guy is called in to investigate. As it turns out, there are some women who, via some genetic cross-breeding that gets only the vaguest of explanations, are now running around having sex with men until they die. The FBI guy figures this out by making a gigantic leap in logic. At the very end there are some sci-fi elements, but that's about it. Oh yeah, there's also a lot of topless women in it - just about every female in the movie gets topless. That's about the only good thing this movie has going for it.

The picture quality is horrible, it looks like it was made from an old worn out video tape. It also looks like whoever filmed it didn't know how to use a camera, as many of the outdoor scenes are completely washed out (the naked girl on the motorcycle looks like a white blob), and many of the indoor scenes are extremely dark. The sound, advertised as Dolby 2.0, is simply mono.

Overall, don't waste your time. It's not "fun" or "cheesy", it's just a crummy '70s flick that is rather boring, and the DVD transfer is terrible.

    3 out of 5 stars Great movie, so-so print........2006-04-30

Originally released in most locations under the title INVASION OF THE BEE GIRLS (which is certainly much more appropriate to the storyline), this has always been one of my favorite science-fiction "skin flicks" of the 1970s' (with a fun and raunchy plot). Unfortunately, the print on this DVD is fairly grainy and quite dark, making many of the night scenes almost indecipherable (were those "[...]" I saw or not?), but, then again, what should I expect for less than four bucks? 5 stars for the movie, 1 star for the print = 3 stars.

1 out of 5 stars I WAS FOOLED BY THE DVD ART!.......2006-04-16

Ok though I can't find the actual version of this DVD on amazon.com that I own I'm going to warn you anyway..

So I am at the local pawn shop and I see a DVD titled GRAVEYARD TRAMPS and it's all colored with black and purple HOT TOPIC style fonts and a very attractive goth girl on the front standing in a graveyard.

Now don't get me wrong I knew I wasn't picking up a piece of cinematic gold.. but I did not get what I expected.. I expected a modern cheezy low budget film about maybe zombies or just psycho girls in a graveyard.. GOTH GIRLS in a graveyard.. as the cover art depicted..

I knew it would be low budget I knew it would be [...].. but oh well I have an addiction for sexy young goth women.

So I get home put the DVD in and to my dissapointment I have a 70's cheese fest about naked better homes and garden type housewives sexing men to death..

I have yet to watch it past the first ten minutes.. and that was pretty liquored up.. so I can't judge if this movie is good or not..

maybe I'll get comatose and make it through the whole thing..

I can say the visuals remind me of the original STEPFORD WIVES.

sooooo don't be fooled by stock photos and creepy goth cover art.. I guess that's the moral of this story!

4 out of 5 stars This ain't no freakin' tea party.......2006-08-10

Some folks just aren't going to buy into the idea of little dolls/action figures coming to life and killing people, even when all the fun comes direct to DVD from the same guys who gave the world The Puppetmaster, but I call it grand entertainment - as long as the kills are sufficiently gruesome and numerous. Demonic doll fans everywhere should be excited by the news that Fool Moon and Charles Band, the famed low-budget director and MonsterBra inventor who has killed enough characters with dolls over the course of his career to make Chuckie feel like a demonic beginner, are back - and they're not here to put on any fancy little tea parties.

Doll Graveyard is a far from perfect little horror film, but I enjoyed the heck out of it. It's really all about the dolls, man. What a quartet of doom: a Samurai warrior (with sword); a pre-WWI German soldier (with gun and really pointy helmet) I affectionately call the Kaiser; "Ooga Booga," a spear-wielding African witch doctor; and a cute little china doll with quite a mouth on her. What could inspire this motley crew of toys to animate themselves with a lust for blood, you ask? Well, how about being buried since 1911 alongside their owner, a cute little girl who more than paid the price for breaking one of daddy's vases while playing? If I were buried and forgotten for 94 years, I'd be pretty grouchy, too.

We have the deadly dolls, so all we need now are some horror film staples: hot chicks - check; a likeable geek who is always being picked on - check; jerk jocks who all but beg to be killed - check; a little blood and gore - check. There's no nudity on the part of the aforementioned hot chicks, but I guess you can't have everything. The story couldn't be any simpler, really. Jared Kusnitz plays Guy, a geeky freshman who's into action figures and irritating his older sister, Deedee (Gabrielle Lynn). Stuck with babysitting Guy while their dad is out on a hot date, Deedee invites girlfriends Olivia (Kristyn Green), a ditzy blonde always in search of a good time, and Terri (Anna Alicia Brock), who's actually quite nice and almost sensible, over to enjoy some alcohol and weed. Naturally, a couple of young jocks show up to paw at the womenfolk and tyrannize young Guy, thus creating the perfect conditions for a devil doll bloodbath.

Earlier that day, Guy had dug up a neat old samurai doll in the backyard. Now, the other buried dolls and the spirit of Sofia, the unfortunate little girl from 1911, emerge from the hole as well. As Sofia begins the process of possessing Guy's body, the dolls seek vengeance on those who would hurt him/her. I thought the death scenes were really quite satisfying in detail and execution - not as gory as I would have liked, but bloody nonetheless. The special effects guys did a great job with the little killers - nothing fancy, just some blinking, simple movements and efficient killing strokes. What truly excited me, however, was the fact that the dolls seemed to be taking orders from me. Time and again, they attacked in just the way I wanted them to - and I was rather specific in some of my requests.

The film whizzes by in little more than an hour (with the last ten of its seventy-two minutes consisting of some extremely slow-moving end credits) - which has its good and its bad sides. On the good side, it helps distract the viewer from some of the film's inconsistencies - why, for instance, did no one in the house ever think of actually turning tail and escaping through the door? And why, assuming there's at least one phone in the house, do the girls only scramble for a missing cell phone in the midst of their crisis? On the bad side, the film is just way too freakin' short. By the time the dolls go on the rampage, you've only got a half hour left in the whole movie. Couldn't they have thrown in a couple more teenagers to kill or something? They had a good thing going here, so why stop at just an hour? Additionally, the whole possession thing between Guy and Sofia could have used some more work, and any impact the last shot might have is negated by the viewer's sudden astonishment upon realizing the film is actually over already.

I have a feeling that viewer response to this film will vary considerably - and you probably already know if you're the type of person who would enjoy watching dolls come to life and start killing people. I really enjoyed Doll Graveyard, but I must admit that the dolls really aren't all that scary, the plot would leak in several places if you filled it with water, and the whole thing really is predictable from start to finish. You don't come to Doll Graveyard to be stimulated intellectually, though; you come to see dolls kill people, and the movie definitely succeeds in that department.

3 out of 5 stars Full Moon is Back! (well, sort of).......2006-03-13

Full Moon, the wonderful company that brought us such titans of terror as Puppet Master and Demonic Toys, brings us another story of little things that kill, Doll Graveyard. Unfortunately, this movie lacks some of Full Moon's pervious luster.

The dolls are horrible, scary, and full of gruesome ways to kill someone, the plot is nice and formula (loner kid who's into action figures is shunned and picked on until the puppets help him take on his bullies) but the poor finish, choppy editing, and odd lapses in continuity detract from the over all picture. The film has the feeling of a school paper that no one proofed before it got turned in.

Don't get me wrong, it's good to see Full Moon back in the saddle and swing of things after not tackling the demonic puppet/doll genre for a while. I'm glad they took a swing at it, but trying to compare this movie to the early work of the Puppet Master series is too harsh. This movie can't compare to that horror classic. Still, compared with the stuff that Lion's Gate and Asylum are cranking out, it's not half bad.

So if you want an hours worth of brainless fun, this is your movie. If you're looking for something that makes sense or will scare you, look for Puppet Master 1, 2, or 3 or Demonic Toys.

Recommended for C horror movie buffs and Full Moon Fans.

3 out of 5 stars Deadly dolls don't deliver dread.......2006-01-26

Producer/Director Charles Band returns to his roots with Doll Graveyard. A Puppet Master style thriller with a promising premise, but with deadly dull execution. When young Guy (Jared Kusnitz) uncovers a Samurai doll in the backyard of his house, he also digs up the vengeful spirit of its previous owner. A young girl accidentally killed by her abusive father. Soon the girl's spirit is trying to possess Guy while the Samurai and its friends (an african warrior, a german soldier, and a regular baby doll) are attacking Guy's sister DeeDee (Gabrielle Lynn) and her partying friends (Anna Alicia Brock, Kristyn Green, and Scott Seymour). Play time is over.

While Doll Graveyard has its moments, the overall quality of the movie is far removed from Full Moon's far superior Puppet Master movies. Not helping is the clumsy pacing of the story and Band's inattention to storytelling detail. There are plenty of moments where the characters could just leave the house, but don't. Band's next project, the insane killer cookie movie The Gingerdead Man, also suffered from the exact same problems. What Band needs is a director that can inject some b-movie energy into his productions, because he doesn't seem to capable of doing so. Too bad, because the concepts are full of potential.

The disc has the usual behind the scenes documentary and a blooper real. Both are far more entertaining than the movie itself, but neither are worth the full retail price of the disc. This one is for Full Moon fanatics only.

    1 out of 5 stars Dull Graveyard.......2006-01-10

Charles Band invites you into his Dull Graveyard...

This movie starts with a little girl playing with a bunch of dolls. She mistakenly bumps into a table and breaks a vase. Her father comes downstairs and decides to punish her by forcing her to bury her little buddies in a grave outside. She somehow trips and falls into the grave, killing herself. Dad buries the daughter with her beloved toys. Flash forward to thirty years later, a new family has moved into the house. The youngest son is a nerdy geek who likes to collect action figures. Imagine his joy at discovering a whole gaggle of antique dolls buried in his back yard! These dolls come to life and start protecting their new owner by killing everyone that ever picked on him. There are no spoilers here, I'm not giving away anything that isn't on the back of the DVD case.

Charles Band returns to what he knows best, making evil puppet horror movies. But just because this is what he knows best, doesn't mean he's any good at it. This is really just a reboot of Puppet Master and Demonic Toys with a new set of evil dolls. The production is shoddy, shot on a cheap DV camera with horrible lighting and a soundtrack that someone did on a Casio keyboard from 1982. Not to mention the fact that the puppets are the best actors in the movie.

Ever since Charles Band came out of retirement or hiding, the Blockbuster shelves have been graced with horrible Full Moon movies that are a few pegs below what they used to be. Even in his prime, Charles Band was nobody's genius, but time has definitely taken its toll. Titles like DECADENT EVIL, DOLL GRAVEYARD and THE GINGERDEAD MAN prove that you can't keep a hack director down. Band is back, folks.

    4 out of 5 stars A return to Full Moon's glory days!.......2005-11-30

I'll keep it short and sweet. This movie reminded me of the early Puppet Master flicks. Some good kills, decent storyline and acting (!). The dolls look really great and are quite convincing. The movie itself is short, but never really gets boring. If you're a fan of Full Moon's killer doll films, you definately need this one!
