Product Description

Director Jack Pollexfen began his professional life in the newspaper business, working his way up from copyboy at the 'Los Angeles Express to reporter on several other dailies. After four years in the Air Force writing training films and manuals during World War II, he got back on track with a series of screenplays for adventure pictures like 'Treasure of Monte Cristo and 'The Desert Hawk. With Indestructible Man A2ZCDS brings you the third movie Pollexfen produced and the second he directed.. A2ZCDS have brought this old Hollywood Classic feature films on DVD. "Director Jack Pollexfen could not have picked a better man to play the horrifying role of the indestructible man than the gifted Lon Chaney Jr., who probably gave his best performance ever in this fascinating horror movie from the last century. The role seems to have been tailor-made for Chaney, whose imposing physique, expressive eyes and communicative facial expressions create a horrifying combination. Based on thorough scientific research, the plot - though futuristic - does not seem to be far-fetched, and is thrilling and spooky at the same time! Although Chaneys character holds center stage for the better part of the movie, the narrative is held together by some commendable performances from the rest of the cast. Max Showalter and Ross Elliot play excellent supporting roles, while the enchanting Marian Carr charms with her great looks and a fine performance. Dont miss this classic horror drama, which is certain to leave you wide-eyed with its amazing plot!"

2 out of 5 stars Ponderous B movie .......2007-05-23

The title character is one Butcher Benton (Lon Chaney) who we first encounter on Death Row where he is awaiting execution for murder following an armoured car robbery ,the proceeds of which have not been recovered .He rails aginst his lawyer and his two accomplices in the robbery and vows revenge .
His body does not reach the morgue .It is taken to a laboratory where it is revived by high voltage jolts of electricity .He sets out to wreak revenge on those he feels have betrayed him .Hot on his trail are a detective and a friend of his from his former life the burlesque dancer Jane .Things build to a climax in the LA sewer system -rather like the classic monster movie Them but with much less impact .

Cahney looks ill and strained throughout and the somewhat muddy soundtrack and grainy colour is no help .Direction is routine and uninspired and the voice over narration slows things down even more

This is all pretty routine and the sight of an ill and uninspired Chaney going through the motions is sad

Avoid please-unless dull B movies are your bag

2 out of 5 stars The Lon Chaney mill churns out a dud.............2006-12-23

Not a badly made film, but very unengaging to say the least. Chaney opens up the film with a nice and fairly extensive dialouge exchange vowing revenge on those who sent him up the river giving promise to another film in alignment with his more sucessful Man Made Monster.

From that point on it was clear this was a paint by numbers job that only uses Chaney in what might be called an 'extensive cameo' role. A haggerty Chaney lumbers his way thru the film, no line of dialouge save for the opening exchange, doing his monster on the rampage thing. I never really bought the 'he was too drunk to remember his lines so they wrote him as a mute in all his films' theory, especially considering the fantastic job he does on the opening dialouge exchange here, but the remainder of this film makes me think there may have been some inkling of truth to it. or maybe there just wasn't enough of a paycheck in it to make alot of work remembering lines worth his while.

There are other members of the cast with much more dialouge and screen time than Chaney and when Chaney is not onscreen, you may easily mistake this flick for a Z grade cop thriller fro mthe 50's.

Overall, I'd say skip this one unless you're a Lon Chaney jr completeist. For a good lesser known Chaney monster film, see Man Made Monster. For a hammy later years B effort from a haggerty and weather beaten Lon Chaney jr, see The Alligator People or The Cyclops first.

5 out of 5 stars Updating The Frankenstein Myth.......2006-11-07

More than 150 years ago Mary Shelly sat down with a group of authors on a chilly winter night and came up with the Frankenstein Story.

Who could have guessed that new versions and evolutions of the story would continue to this day. The Indestructible Man came almost exactly 100 years after the first tellin of the tale and gives a good glimpse as to how the narrative can evolve with the times.

Frankenstein has always been about man's fear of technolgy and his desire to play god. Therefore filmakers play god with their stories while bringing each generations new technology to the task.

What I liked about this version was the casting choice. Lon Cheny Jr was almost always cast as one or another variation of The Wolf Man. Therefore to see him play Frankenstien is amazing.

You get to see what he would have done with the role if it had not gone to Boris Carloff 20 years before and he does a great job with it.

The movie is a little bit on the short side - comming in at 70 minutes, but that's really all you need to tell this story.

We know the monster will go bad and that he must be destroyed, so there is no point in dragging out the issue. Being a mid 1950s movie the monster is a symbol for the growing american ease with nuclear power and energy and this is worked into the story fairly well.

The film is also well preserved and one of the last chances to see Cheny while he was still in his prime.

2 out of 5 stars Snoozy Film-Noir Frankenstein-Shocker .......2006-07-29

Jack Pollexfen's second and last directorial effort, The Indestructible Man, is an unfortunate, snooze-inducing mess. The basic ideas are very promising. It combines a funky film-noir with a modern (for 1956) update on the Frankenstein story, with one of my favorite actors, Lon Chaney, Jr. as the "monster", and it's the first film I know of to use the basic plot later employed for Wes Craven's Shocker (1989). Yet, despite this only being about 70 minutes long, I started watching about two hours before my normal bedtime and I could barely stay awake until the end. I know I zoned out a couple times but hardly felt compelled to rewind the disc and make sure I didn't miss anything.

What really kills the film is the writing, which is surprising, because Pollexfen's principal vocation throughout his career was as a writer. But for some reason, he didn't write this. Two people I've never heard of did the job instead--Vy Russell and Sue Bradford. At times, the writing resembles Ed Wood, especially in the narration, which was a bad idea. Not that the direction is much to speak of, but aside from letting some bad, out of focus cinematography slide by, it's pretty competent in a poverty-row sort of way (I happen to like many of the poverty row pictures a lot).

Chaney doesn't get to do enough here, and the plot demands that he cannot speak for most of the film. Max Showalter, the detective/narrator, and to a lesser extent Marian Carr are the stars. Showalter's okay, and Carr is attractive and decent enough, but I would have rather had more Chaney. In the bad directorial decision department, there are a few times that Pollexfen has Chaney make Lugosi-Dracula-like googly eyes while he moves towards the camera. It's a bad idea both because it's very cheesy in a bad way and it's responsible for a lot of the out of focus stuff. I don't know if they didn't have a focus puller or if he had already fallen asleep.

In the middle, I also started to lose track of the various victims. They all kinda looked the same, there wasn't much character development, and the scenes leading up to their demises were drawn out and bland. Once the victim entered the scene, they weren't in it for very long. On the other hand, I did mention that I zoned out a few times.

However, there are some interesting features besides the good core ideas. One is that there is some structural resemblance, especially during the end, to Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, believe it or not, and that came out in 1958--two years after this. There is also a bit of structural resemblance in the end of Blacula (1972). Not that this film was influential. The resemblance was probably coincidental, and for all I know, Indestructible Man stole some of this stuff from other sources, but just maybe . . . and it's still interesting to witness, anyway.

I'm mostly complaining in this review, but it's not that this is a completely awful film. It's certainly worth seeing if you're a Chaney fan, a film-noir fan or a Frankenstein film fan. Just don't expect too much, and preferably watch it when you're wide awake.

5 out of 5 stars Good Classic Horror Film.......2006-07-25

I remember seeing this film when I was a kid on one of those television monster marathons and thought that I'd never see it again because it is such an example of 1950s B horror movies. Therefore I was pleased when I noticed it on Amazon. I ordered it and was very happy. It's campy and funny and not really scary, but it has Lon Cheny as a murderous zombie and that's all I really wanted from the film. Five Stars.

The Indestructible Man stars bearish horror movie icon Lon Chaney Jr. as the vicious "Butcher" Benton, a notorious killer and bank robber on death row who swears to take revenge on his backstabbing lawyer and double-crossing partners. When his corpse is brought back to life in a secret experiment, mute but monstrously strong and impervious to bullets, he's suddenly in a position to carry out his threat and scoop up the loot he hid from his last job. Meanwhile, investigating cop Robert Shayne, who dryly narrates Dragnet style, leads the hunt to catch him before he kills again. The Los Angeles location shooting, including scenes in the underground sewer system and a climactic showdown at a power plant, and Chaney's lumbering, lurching performance (a kind of urban Frankenstein's monster) bring a little character to an otherwise drab thriller.

B movie auteur Edgar G. Ulmer directs The Amazing Transparent Man, another science-fiction-tinged crime thriller. In the film's handsomely shot introduction, Douglas Kennedy is sprung from prison to help an ambitious crime lord (James Griffith) with his master plan to take over the world with his new invisibility formula. But tough-talking thug Kennedy is no man's patsy, and the two double-cross each other. The slim 60-minute feature is stuck with a leaden script and silly twists, but the film looks better than it has any right to and Ulmer directs with a brisk pace, ending the picture (thanks to the wonders of stock footage) with an apocalyptic bang! --Sean Axmaker

3 out of 5 stars Adequate if unremarkable DVD two-fer of minor SF cheapies.......2002-02-01

Indestructible Man is probably the most familiar, and beloved, of producer-director Jack Pollexfen's poverty-row epics (Neanderthal Man, Daughter of Dr. Jekyll, Atomic Brain). Pollexfen's name in the credits always means you're in no-budget-land. Another clue this time out is the preponderance of narration (indicating an absence of synch sound, of course). The movie gets what little rep it has from the casting of Lon Chaney as back-from-the-dead killer `The Butcher' Benton, although he actually looks rather thin and haggard here (he was no doubt drinking heavily at the time), and not very threatening at all. Or as the narrator says, "like any normal person on his way to work." Robert Shayne (Neanderthal Man, Inspector Henderson on Superman) makes a brief appearance as "mad" Professor Bradshaw (assisted by Joe "Captain Binghamton" Flynn) resuscitating The Butcher; bland Casey Adams/Max Showalter (Monster that Challenged the World, Niagara) is Lt. Dick Chasen the flatfoot hero; and Ross Elliott (Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Monster on the Campus) plays a sleazy lawyer. The movie tries for trash appeal by making The Butcher's ex-girlfriend Eva (Marion Carr) a burlesque performer, but her sweet-and-innocent manner totally undercuts any bad-girl ambience that might have been generated. Overall the movie is a bit on the dull side, with a few laughs, and a modicum of bad-movie charm. Cinematography is by John L. (Jack) Russell (Hitchcock's Psycho; Thriller TV series), though you're unlikely to be impressed by the source print: it's fairly grainy, with a slightly soft, `dupey' look, and respectable if unremarkable grayscale, brightness, contrast, and shadow/highlight detail. There is also light-to-moderate speckling, scratching, and blemishing throughout, and the sound is merely OK, a bit on the muddy side at times. Kind of makes you wonder what exactly Roan "restored." (The box claims the movies to be "digitally mastered and restored from original film elements." ?!?). Not nearly as nice as some of their other releases (e.g. Svengali, Horror Hotel), if not disastrous either.
The Amazing Transparent Man was cult director Edgar G. Ulmer's final American film and it pretty much feels like a last gasp (it's not nearly as much fun as Beyond the Time Barrier). The mostly no-name cast ranges from annoying (loud, abrasive Douglas Kennedy as safecracker Joey Faust) to cloying (Dr. Ulof [familiar character actor Ivan Triesault] and his daughter Maria). The script is an odd mix of gangster movie cliches, soap opera melodramatics, late 50s topicality (Cold War/espionage subplotting), and Weighty Issues thematics that never really goes anywhere. The laboratory set is quite poverty-stricken, and the invisibility effects, accomplished with traveling mattes, are only mildly diverting. Other special effects are of the pantomime-and-fishing-line variety; almost cheesy enough to be funny. Almost. Legendary makeup artist Jack P. Pierce's talents are completely wasted (it was one of his last movies), and, let's face it, Ulmer is way past prime here, with precious little onscreen to distinguish this from any contemporary Dick Cunha or Herbert L. Strock picture.
At least the source print is better than that of Indestructible Man. It's actually quite decent, presented in anamorphic widescreen at approximately 1.85:1, with generally very good to excellent grayscale, sharpness, brightness, contrast, and highlight detail. The shadow detail looks a little blocked up at times, and there is some sporadic light speckling, blemishing, and scratching (mostly around reel changes), but overall the print's quite acceptable, especially considering the age and history of the film.
Bottom line: neither movie is really indispensable to a 1950s SF collection, both being of interest mainly to bad movie diehards with fairly strong constitutions. The DVD package rates a solid three. The source prints, while nothing to write home about, are basically average to slightly above (especially The ATM), and far better than the crap you typically find on a Madacy or Brentwood disc. Unfortunately, there are no menus, trailers, or any other extras, though both movies are broken into chapters. Fifties C-movie completists and Ulmer fanatics might as well go for it, mainstream consumers beware.

3 out of 5 stars One of the most entertaining "bad" horrors ever made!.......2001-04-12

If you are a fan of low-budget horror and/or film noir, then you must see the struggling Lon Chaney, Jr., as the notorious Charles "Butcher" Benton! By 1956, poor Lon was accepting just about anything he could, being tormented by many demons and having been typecast so severely. (He did, however, also play several good character parts in non-horror Fifties A-films like HIGH NOON, NOT AS A STRANGER, A LION IS IN THE STREETS and THE DEFIANT ONES, something that neither Boris Karloff nor Bela Lugosi did during the 1950s--Karloff being busy with television and the stage, and Lugosi sinking into an endlessly painful morass.) Here, Lon does a fine job with his limited dialogue and then has a heyday as the revived-from-the-dead mute who pummels and THROWS his victims to their deaths (in some of the most humorous killing scenes in horror-film history). The scenes of Lon crawling around in the L.A. storm-drain system and the incredible ending in which the Butcher is cooked alive at a power plant (destroying a multi-million dollar complex while the police recover a fraction of that in gangster's loot) are highlights in this sometimes dreadful yet strangely compelling and nearly always entertaining Jack Pollexfen opus! The DVD version is somewhat superior to most of the cheap VHS copies being peddled everywhere.

SH & the SW- Rathbone and Bruce are THE Holmes/Watson pair, and this is among the top 5 Sherlockian outings, although it is a risible addition to a `horror classics' disc.
In this fast-paced, well-assembled programmer, now set in WWII England rather than in Victorian England, our heroes have to contend not only with Moriarty as portrayed by villainous Universal fave Lionel Atwill, and his minions, but also Nazi agents seeking an experimental bombsight which could turn the tide of the war.
The mystery involves a complex code, plenty of captures and escapes, disguises, deduction, and welcome humor without cheapening any of the characters.
Purists may rightly complain that the ending has more in common with serials than with the writings of Doyle, but, hey, it's fun.

IM- This supremely inexpensive attempt to cross Dragnet with Lon Chaney's persona doesn't quite come off. It's more police procedural than horror; Chaney's back-from-the-dead Butcher character could just as easily have been written to be a normal vengeance-seeking ex-con. At any rate, the basic story idea has been around at least since Karloff's 1936 film, The Walking Dead.
IM is fairly routine and plodding (both as `noir' and as `horror'), although there is amusement to be had from the narration, from Chaney, who looks convincingly psychotic and was probably sauced to the gills, and from all the usual things that make these kind of B-movies fun.
Flip a coin as to whether you think the means of Lon's ultimate destruction is fitting or nonsensical.

DMW- Another PRC snoozer, DMW begins with George Zucco having killed his twin brother because he was practicing the black arts. However, the brother returns as a vampire and sets about destroying all that his good twin holds dear. Of course good wins the day, but not without some tragedy. This film was not badly conceived, and Zucco is a likeable pro, but it was badly executed. While not as glacially-slow as some of its other fare, PRC's stubborn unwillingness to spend any cash, or to show the audience anything they hadn't seen a dozen times before, stakes this one right through its mediocre heart.
Pretty Rotten Crap, as the studio's output was known in Hollywood circles of the time, was hurt by always having monsters that just look like people, yet claiming that they were monsters: a slightly hairier Glenn Strange, a kind of pasty Charles Middleton, or in this case, George Zucco dressed in black. Whooo, spoooky! They couldn't even spring for a set of dime store fangs to make him look the part of a bloodsucker. He is one because the script says he is, and because he sometimes fades from view.
Plus, DMW wastes quite a bit of time assuming no one seeing the movie will have ever heard about vampires before, and picks and chooses which rules it will follow.

All told, while I am not a zealous fan of any one of the movies on this disc, they are passable genre fare and the disc is of decent quality considering the low price. Fans of the casts and completists should have no qualms purchasing it.

2 out of 5 stars Horrible Quality For Such Great Classics.......2006-06-27

I recently purchased 2 separate DVDs from Mill Creek Entertainment, one having The Phantom of the Opera and The Indestructible Man, the other with The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Nosferatu. While it's great to have these films on DVD, be warned that the quality is not that great.

The Phantom of the Opera: This is the 1920's version, starring the great Lon Chaney as the Phantom. The film is probably the best version of the Phantom remakes, considering it focuses on the horror side and not the musical aspect.

The Indestructible Man: A b-movie with Chaney son, Lon Chaney Jr. as the lead. Truly forgettable, and it was also featured in an episode of the 90's show Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Also stars Lon Chaney. His makeup for his character Quasimodo is amazing.

Nosferatu: Max Shreck stars as the famous vampire and he never fails to provide audiences with scary moments.

Other than Indestructible Man, the 3 silent classics suffered in terms of quality and musical scoring. Many classics have had the restored treatment and therefore, have been re-released on special DVDs to provide audiences with a much clearer and more entertaining movie experience. As for the music, it does not match up to the scenes. A worker at Mill Creek must have pushed "repeat" with the music as the film was playing. It practically ruins the film and paralyzes the suspense.
Paying 2 dollars for these 4 films was ok for me, but if you're a fan of silent horror (or that certain b-movie that appeared in this set), check out the restored versions.

This is a Platinum Disc that has 4 movies on one side. What is surprising here is that compression is extremely good for such a crowded early issue disc. All of these movies have fallen into public domain and there are tons from various distributors on the market but these 4 have decent transfers including one of the best for "Dementia 13". There was a release by Roan for Dementia 13 long out of print and extremely hard to find but wasn't one of their best efforts or transfer. It is unknown if the original elements still exist or if MGM who holds the rights, will ever have an official release for this and the other titles here? But in the mean time, pick up this collection especially if you are into drive-in or Chiller Theater 'B' movies!
