The direct-to-DVD animated feature Superman: Brainiac Attacks pits Superman against two of his longest-running foes: Lex Luthor and the robotic Brainiac. Luthor's scheme is to re-jigger Brainiac's configuration using a combination of Superman's DNA and a rare form of Kryptonite to make him an unstoppable weapon against the Man of Steel. Fans of TV's Superman: The Animated Series will be pleased to note the return of Tim Daly and Dana Delany, who reprise their roles as Superman and Lois Lane from the show, but hardcore Superman/Justice League Unlimited viewers may regret the loss of Clancy Brown's formidable performance as Luthor (who is voiced here by Powers Boothe), as well as Corey Burton as Brainiac (here handled by Lance Henriksen). Also missing is the series' adherence to its DC Comics origins and its serious tone, which here is blunted by Duane (The Batman, Jackie Chan Adventures) Capizzi's frothy script, which hews closer to a combination of the Superman films and broad comedy. --Paul Gaita

Description

Superman, about to finally divulge his identity and his feelings to Lois Lane, suddenly finds his mighty hands full when Brainiac, a powerful computer, bent on universal domination and Lex Luthor team up to defeat him. Armed with new weapons and a special strain of kryptonite infused in his body, Brainiac becomes the most powerful enemy The Man of Steal has ever faced. When Lois Lane is critically injured by a force beam that was intended for him, Superman must race into the mysterious Phantom Zone to find a cure. Brianiac, believing Superman to be dead, betrays Lex Luthor and begins his attack on the city of Metropolis and ultimately Earth. Will Superman survive the Phantom Zone in order to defeat his deadly foes, save Lois and Metropolis?

2 out of 5 stars What a shame.......2007-06-26

Apparently set outside the DCAU, we find Superman/Clark Kent contemplating revealing himself to Lois Lane, the woman he loves, but things are thrown off when Brainiac and Lex Luthor get involved, resulting in alien sicknesses, a quest for the cure in the Phantom Zone, and a big fight between Superman and a giant Brainiac robot.

Sound compelling? Well, I'm afraid it isn't. Poor dialogue and childish storytelling make this an embarrassment to the characters and fans everywhere. I guess this is what happens when Bruce Timm and Paul Dini aren't in charge. Lance Henriksen subs for Corey Burton as Brainiac, and he throws out a decent voice for it, but he also sounds out of place, while Powers Boothe subs for Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor and sadly he does a horrible job with it, playing Luthor more like a campy 60s Batman villain than the charming scheming brute Brown made him (Boothe also voiced, more effectively, Gorilla Grodd on Justice League). Tim Daly comes back as the voice of Superman (having had missed out on Justice League due to the short lived Fugitive remake, requiring George Newbern to replace him) and he still throws out a good Superman voice, but everything around, except for Dana Delany as Lois Lane, is very poor. Still, the fight between Superman and the giant Kong sized Brainiac was fun to watch, moreso than anything in Bryan Singer's bloated "Superman Returns".

It's too bad they didn't use this as a chance to bridge the gap between the criminally underrated "Superman: The Animated Series" and "Justice League: TAS", tying off the storyline started in LEGACY, showing Superman regaining the trust of the Eath.

1 out of 5 stars Not even finished wtaching it... .......2007-04-05

Unbelievable, I'm about 2 minutes in and I already hate it. Was Clancy Brown too busy taping his useless Lost cameos to voice Luthor? As a fan of JLU, my first thoughts were "Why is Lex voiced by Grodd?" It reminded me of a Krypto episode, which might be fine for kids, but even this was nauseatingly worse than that show. The DVD...(Wait, I'm shutting it off, I might throw up too)... Should have had a disclaimer- Not for fans of Superman: The Animated Series or the Man of Steel himslef!!
My two year old cousin is a Superman fan (Or Soopid-Man, as he calls him. And Spider-Man for that matter. We'll work on that)and I would feel bad giving this to him.
Anyway, I'll use it as a coaster or something.
The lithograph that it came with was cool anyway.
Sorry Bruce Timm, your work really deserved better.

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2007-02-28

This is truly a disgrace to Bruce Timm, Clancy Brown, and Corey Burton. This could have been a truly great movie with the proper cast, directors, and producers(being that this wasn't a Bruce Timm project). Lex Luthor is portrayed more as comic relief than as a villian. Clancy Brown and Corey Burton had made their respective characters true villians during the Superman and Justice League series. Of course this movie wouldn't have been such a let down if the DCAU hadn't been as great as it was. It would be great if one day Bruce Timm would make a Justice League movie with an "epilogue" feel that could truly bring the DCAU to a close.

3 out of 5 stars Superman: Brainiac Attacks.......2007-02-07

Why bother?
This feature tends to ignore all the subsequent developments between Superman, Luthor and Brainiac which occurred in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. (This trend is facilitated by bringing back original Superman Animated series voice artist Tim Daly as Superman/Clark Kent).
Despite several temporary upheavals in the lives of the characters, nothing is really changed by the end of the feature.
Soundtrack music is uninspiring.
Still, if you collect every instalment in the DC Animated Universe, as I do, this is still a must.
Supeman is still drawn like a hulking goliath. Lois Lane is still drawn like a diminutive stick insect.
Why Warner's artists continue to excessively exaggerate the differences between men's and women's physiques, I don't know. Give me the old Filmation 1960s versions of these characters anyday. HOW ABOUT IT, WARNER BROS. RESPOND TO MY 2006 LETTERS AND RELEASE THESE SHOWS, IN THEIR UNCUT ENTIRETY.
Fans, please request the same: Superman (1966-67), Aquaman (1967), Batman (1968 & 1977). We won't get it on DVD, unless Warner is awoken to the demand for what's spent decades in their vaults.

5 out of 5 stars Not a continuation..........2007-02-06

Let me begin by saying that I don't really think that this is a five star movie. But Amazon uses a reviewer average, and I felt that the average of this one really should be closer to three stars rather than what it is.

It is important to note before ever seeing Brainiac Attacks that this isn't a continuation of Superman the Animated Series. There are many things that occur that are inconsistent to that series, which makes it much better to simply view this one as a stand alone movie. Some examples of what I am talking about are:

1. When Lex Luther and Brainiac first meet in this movie it is played as though they have never met before, even though they actually met the first time Brainiac came to Earth. Brainiac says something to the effect that he saw data about Luther in a download, which should have been unnecessary since they did meet before.

2. Luther is a completely different character than he was in the series. He was a very serious man, much more threatening. The Luther in this movie is more of a comic character, leaving room for Brainiac to be the truly intimidating villian of the movie.

3. When Brainiac enters Superman's Fortress of Solitude, he gets all excited about being able to download all the knowledge of Krypton from Superman's console, something that Brainiac shouldn't have to do since he comes from Krypton himself.

So this movie doesn't continue the animated series. It may feature the same animated look, and some of the original voices, but it takes everything in a new direction. That doesn't, however, mean that it is bad. Looked at in this perspective I feel it is a fairly decent movie. The action sequences are good. The story doesn't drag; it keeps you interested throughout. The grips I have with it are some of the moments of "comedy" that they felt that had to throw in that I felt were reminisent of those terrible Superman movie sequels (III, IV, and parts of the original Lester version of II). But just like the original Lester version of Superman II, it does have its good points that overshadow its bad points and make it an overall fun movie. Expectations are everything when watching a movie, so if you deside to watch this one come to it with the right perspective. It isn't as good as Superman the animated series, and it doesn't even come close to the Justice League. But it is fun in its way and I think you will enjoy it if you view it in this light.

Description

AKA El Barón del Terror. The year is 1661. Baron Vitelius (Abel Salazar) stands accused of consorting with the devil. The penalty: death. Cursing his inquisitors as they burn him at the stake, the Baron's revenge comes 300 years later, in the form of a horrifying fork-tongued incarnation of the Baron, hellbent on devouring the brains of the descendents of those who killed him. As bodies pile up, the police become mystified. Who is draining the skulls of local call-girls and well-to-do banquet-goers alike? And, more importantly, how many flamethrowers will it take to stop him? Brainiac is the supernatural cult classic that has been beloved for decades by fans of spook-show matinees and late-night monster movie marathons.

Famously imported to the U.S. by exploitation icon K. Gordon Murray in the 1960s, Brainiac is at once lurid and loony, unnerving and uproarious, spellbinding and surreal.

CasaNegra is proud to present this milestone of Mexican cinema digitally remastered and uncut for the first time on DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Make Me Watch The Rubber Tongue When It Comes Out.......2007-03-07

The Brainiac is a movie so silly that Frank Zappa had to make references to it in one of his songs! And silly it is, in a kind of Mexican Plan 9 sort of way. The plot is the whole heretic guy getting burned during the inquisition with the whole "I curse you and your descendants" thing. Kinda like Bava's Black Sunday, but one thing Bava's film didn't have is a monster like this one. Once the condemned Baron turns up again 300 years later, he basically looks normal until he decides to get down and dirty with revenge. After hypnotizing his victims(an optical trick that makes his face blink like a vehicle's turn signal), he turns into...THE BRAINIAC. The Brainiac looks like a kindergartener's attempt at making a troll mask complete with rubber forked tongue. He's a hoot! Unfortunately that's all the movie really has going for it. The scenes in between have a few unintentional chuckles, but it's all rather boring. The best scenes are when The Brainiac appears, and unfortunately, they go by a little too fast. Regardless of it's shortcomings, I'd definitely recommend this movie to all fans of the schlocky and the bizarre.

5 out of 5 stars Horrable Horror: Not Superman's hot pants wearing green android enemy........2007-02-18

This movie is absolutely incredible and styrange. In the 1987 many fans were introduced to this film when clips
from it were included on the home video release "Zacherly's Horrable Horror'. At the time, the Brainiac had dissapeared from regular TV showings and, for many, this was all that could be seen. It was a revelation that blew our minds. Clips showed a cone shaped rock drop from the sky and land flat. It then transformed into
a huge hairy headed creature with sucktion cup fingers who is depicted changing into a human and, incredibly,
sucking the brains out of victims with a probing tongue. All thw while his head is expanding and contracting like a Rob Bottin bladder effect. Amazing. Glad that I can now see the whole movie. Its mind blowing. Way ahead of its time. This creature was a radical departure from the standard vampires of the time. Its the Grandad of the Chupacabra.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD, Great Classic.......2006-09-18

First of all I would like to mention the quality of the image and sound, is superb. This movie was made in 1962 and you will never notice that, what a great job doing the transfer.
The Villian of the movie get's killed by fire when the movie starts and swears to come back and kill the descendants of those who took his life, and no he is not Freddy Krueger ;)
Two hundred years later he comes back to fulfill his promise. Of course this time he can transform himself into a "horrible" monster, of course is a very cheesy one and it will make you laugh a lot, This classic has all the elements of a fun campy horror movie, cheesy monster and FX's, some bad acting, some not that bad acting and specially "The Look", you will understand it when you watch it :D

4 out of 5 stars EL BARON DEL....BRAINS?.......2006-09-02

CasaNegra continues it's top-notch quality preservation of old Mexican horror films with "El Baron del Terror" or "Brainiac". The film is absolutely ridiculous, cheaply made but beautifully shot in gorgeous b&w. And it's this wonderful quality that CasaNegra preserves. The print is immaculate, enabling you to see fine details like the unbelievably cheap sets and the unbelievably cheap "comet" that brings our monster "el baron" to earth 300 years after he was burned alive for heresy, debauchery, sorcery and so on. One thing must be said, though, the story is imaginative. But the baron (played by the producer Abel Salazar), in monster form, is one of the screen's most ludicrous looking things I've ever seen. He's hysterical. And likes brains, which we won't get into because he keeps them unrefridgerated and, well, nobody seemed to catch that they would SMELL after a while? Anyway, this is a fun film that's enjoyable to watch in such beautiful, sharp condition and to savor and share with your friends who also might enjoy hoots like this. The dialogue is not to be missed either. Says a detective, "A maniac with knowledge is a threat." Hmmm...guess so. Please enjoy!

That's an example of the fantastic dialogue from this awesome B movie. I saw Brainiac on the big screen in Johnstown, PA where it was filmed. Yes it is low budget but it has heart! I can honestly say that seeing my local landmarks on film and some of my friends and neighbors in their film acting debut lend a helping hand in my enjoyment of this movie but you know what you are getting into when you buy it! Dialogue and special effects are over the top and of course unintentionally hilarious. This movie is indeed "Disco", Mr. Gratton..
