Here's how critic Roger Ebert described the unique and lasting value of George Lucas's 1973 box-office hit, American Graffiti: "[It's] not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie's success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant." The time to which Ebert and the film refers is the summer of 1962, and American Graffiti captures the look, feel, and sound of that era by chronicling one memorable night in the lives of several young Californians on the cusp of adulthood. (In essence, Lucas was making a semiautobiographical tribute to his own days as a hot-rod cruiser, and the film's phenomenal success paved the way for Star Wars.) The action is propelled by the music of Wolfman Jack's rock & roll radio show--a soundtrack of pop hits that would become as popular as the film itself. As Lucas develops several character subplots, American Graffiti becomes a flawless time capsule of meticulously re-created memory, as authentic as a documentary and vividly realized through innovative use of cinematography and sound. The once-in-a-lifetime ensemble cast members inhabit their roles so fully that they don't seem like actors at all, comprising a who's who of performers--some of whom went on to stellar careers--including Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, and Paul Le Mat. A true American classic, the film ranks No. 77 on the American Film Institute's list of all-time greatest American movies. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars American Graffiti .......2007-06-27

I didn't care for this movie too much. It might be ok for teenagers but I doubt today's teenager would relate, it may seem kind of nerdy to them.

5 out of 5 stars American Graffiti DVD.......2007-05-13

This is a great movie and have always wanted to own it. I've had no problems with it. It's in perfect condition and I've already watched it three times!

5 out of 5 stars American Graffiti.......2007-05-07

My husband was born in 1947 so this is his musical era. He just wanted it for the car stereo and his lengthy drive to work every day.

4 out of 5 stars i dig rock & roll music, i can really get it on that scene ..........2007-03-30

ok, i was 19 when i first saw this in the movies so it had a special impact. seeing it now in middle age it is not as powerful, but can still be appreciated on its own terms: well written, well acted, well directed, andof course that score makes one think (incorrectly) that the early days of rock-n-roll were some sort of era of musical magic.

2 out of 5 stars Too Bad the sound track was "Improved".......2007-02-18

This was and is a great, great, movie the way it was "originally" conceived! Then, DVDs came along with better visuals and the "required 5.1 soundtrack." Because of it's popularity, Lucas had to "improve" the already wonderful soundtrack inorder to "repackage" his wonderful creation. Well, you guessed it, he, or his audio engineers, ruined the sound by "updating" it. Yes, the visuals are improved but the "new and improved audio track" is barely acceptable which is a shame as there is so much wonderful music in this film. ("He must have changed the editing monitor speakers he used originally to a "better and improved version." The "new" sound track is simply too "accurate" and "uninvolving" on a modern sound system and does not capture the emotions of the original event as well as what you can hear on the "old" VHS and LaserDisc versions. Sad, as the "new" soundtrack, while sounding ok , can distract on a quality home audio/video system these days. Stay with the VHS or LaserDisc versions if your lucky enough to have them.

A double bill of rural schlock, with both entries gruesome but somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Deranged was inspired by the unsavory saga of Ed Gein, whose isolated madness oiled the gears of both Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This is a low-rent production all the way, but its shabby locations have a certain eerie authenticity, and it benefits greatly from the casting of the reliable character actor Roberts Blossom--a scarecrow in the American Gothic mold--in the lead role. Now and again a somber but vaguely amusing narrator wanders into the frame to remind us that we are watching the tale of "a necromaniac, a defiler of the dead," as though we could forget. Serial-killer completists should check it out.

Motel Hell is slicker but less effective. Former Western star Rory Calhoun plays Farmer Vincent, a country hotel keeper (free samples of jerky at the front desk) whose line of smoked meats turns his customers into unwitting cannibals. The movie's got some genuinely creeped-out ideas (a backyard garden of victims, buried up to their necks?), but the execution is pedestrian and the humor pretty square. Onetime cultural icon Wolfman Jack has a few scenes as a TV preacher, for no apparent reason. --Robert Horton

Description

Deranged: Ezra's good at making friends... into home furnishings! Based on the same terrifying story that inspired Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs, this hauntingly scary film chronicles the grisly exploits of a rural necrophiliac and murderer! Brace yourself for a "solid horror story" (Variety) that's guaranteed to make you bite your nails... because if you don't, Ezra will!

Motel Hell: You really are what you eat with Farmer Vincent's smoked meat in this creepy horror yarn that "packs a punch and goes way beyond mere terror" (Box Office)! Vincent's popular products contain a special ingredient that the psychotic farmer and his sister would literally kill to keep secret in this darkly funny flick that "just might be your cup of meat" (L.A. Herald Examiner).

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Motel Hell.......2007-03-08

It was ok, liked it as a kid, sometimes it's good to go back in time. One good thing price was good.Ilike buying from you guys right now can't think of next movie but I will soon. Thanks Again

5 out of 5 stars 10 Star rating for the GREATEST in 'B' horror flicks!!.......2007-01-27

What a great combo of meat cutting this double feature is! Who could ask for more? Motel Hell is so blackly classic, and Deranged is one of the first movies to simulate the enigma of famous serial killer Ed Gein.

Motel Hell: The finer points of meat smoking.
The 'Motel Hello' has the 'O' burned out, which makes it Motel Hell ... but that part is trivial. It's one of those homey, cozy places in the middle of nowhere, with not just the motel but a nice little shop that serves up the best smoked meats in the county. Homegrown, I might add. Farmer Vincent's Smoked Meats.

Vincent lives at the hotel with his sister Ida. God I love Ida, she's so far-fetched and crazy. Vincent and Ida spend their days tending the crops and fattening the hogs for slaughter. "It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent's Fritters!" The hotel is the perfect bait for fresh meat, and when no one is checked in, ol' Farmer Vincent checks the roads. After causing a motorcycle crash, Vincent decides to keep one little lovely for his own plaything.

'Motel Hell' is filled with black comedy that will keep you laughing your horror filled butt off. The dominatrix and the pervert who stay at the hotel (oh man, that plastic skirt is priceless!!), Wolfman Jack as a preacher, a psychedelic garden scene, a chainsaw fight with Vincent wearing a pig's head, all make for one of the best black comedy horror films ever made. Serve up some cheese while watching this one.

Deranged: Ed Gein in a tea party.
Supposedly based on the true account of Ed Gein, but taking way too many liberties, 'Deranged' still holds a soft spot in this black heart in spite of the low budget. Made even more melodramatic by a glasses-wearing narrator, this film is cheese from beginning to end, but with a flavor you can't help but enjoy.

Ezra Cobb: Murderer, Grave Robber, Necrophiliac, and known as "The Butcher Of Woodside." Devastated after the death of his mother, whom he cared for most of his life, lonely and child-like Ezra finally digs up her corpse and brings it home to care for.

But Ezra needs fresh skin to keep Mama looking new, so he watches the obituaries for extra parts. Ezra is a good boy though, and he treats the ladies he steals from the cemetery quite well, setting them up at tea parties with his Mama. "Life's a pain and God's a sadist."

Naturally, Ezra's curiosity involving the opposite sex leads him to bring fresher meat to the table, eventually leading to some grisly discoveries. Repairs are hard to make without fresh skin

'Motel Hell' is one of the most classic horror flicks to ever grace the screen. 'Deranged' is cheaply done but well acted and well photographed. If you love horror, this is a MUST HAVE for your collection! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars for "Deranged".......2006-12-28

"Deranged" is the best reason to buy this rather interesting set. It has so many qualities that most horror films lack. It has shock factor, a genuine plot, disturbing situations and great performances.

5 out of 5 stars Two great movies.......2006-11-30

I was truly happy with these two great films. Motel Hell brought back great memories as a kid during the 80s and back in the day it was shown on HBO a lot when HBO was good and it only showed movies, this film used to scare the crap out of me as well, but, compare to todays films its a cake walk today. I got this because of Motel Hell, so, if your going to buy it, buy it for that reason alone, however, with the movie Deranged..it was truly an odd film with a twist (or shock) at the end, very good film indeed. Recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars deranged is a classic horror film.......2006-11-04

Deranged finely-acted across the board and well made. Motel Hell, on the other hand, is pure junk and a waste of time. But that doesn't matter at all, because Deranged (way underrated) is worth the money. I will go so far as to say certain scenes in Deranged top the overrated Psycho--because they stuck to the truth--for the most part. Nicely written and directed.

5 out of 5 stars Alvin And The Chipmunks Are The Best !!!.......2004-11-27

Who can resist the loveable antics of a character thats so funny and silly?
I loved the movie "The Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein", the most, and the songs that the Chipmunks sang !
I wish that they would release more Chipmunks cartoons to DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty cool.......2004-10-19

I grew up with Alvin and the Chipmunks when I was a kid so I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old. I didnt know if he would be intrested but he loves it. Especially being so close to Halloween. It has two Alvin scary cartoons.
I only wish it had the Original "Were the Chipmunks..." theme song from the 80's cartoon. I hope they release a regular set of the cartoon soon too.
Also comes with a Archie cartoon and a Monster Cartoon

Description

When redneck dirt-farmers accidentally drink a barrel of nuclear waste they transform into tobacco chewing, flesh eating, cannibal kinfolk from hell! Meanwhile, seven sophisticated city slickers on vacation get lost in the woods and encounter a nightmare world of these illiterate, and extremely hungry, undead appalachains. While the tourists hikers use all their wits and courage to stay alive, more and more "down-home" types imbibe the nasty brew until Redneck Zombies are everywhere. What started as a scenic nature-hike turns into a bloodbath of dismemberment and cannibalism! Redneck Zombies, the directorial debut of effects genius Pericles Lewnes (Troma's War, Toxic Avenger Part II and III), was the first feature film shot on video!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!.......2007-06-17

This is definitely one of my favorite movies. It has bad acting. Bad script. Silly gags. Disgusting situations. Tons of gore. Nonsensical activity. It has everything that makes a great bad movie! Now, if you don't like movies that are campy, cheap, silly, over-the-top (or whatever other term you want to use), then you obviously won't like this one. You shouldn't even rent it. In fact, you shouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole--because this is one of the best bad movies ever made.

Yes, the acting is bad, but the key is that it's not boring. Yes, the script isn't going to win any awards, but it's not boring. Yes, the gags... well, I think you see the pattern. This isn't a sophisticated movie--it never pretends or tries to be. It's just a *fun* movie. What I really don't understand are the bad reviews here by people who say they like campy horror movies. I don't doubt their sincerity or honesty, I just don't understand how they couldn't at least give this movie a pass.

So, what is so good about this movie in my opinion? Let me count the ways! (a cheesy movie deserves a somewhat cheesy review) First, I loved the sound effects and music. I don't like country music, but the theme for this movie is just awesome, and much of the other sounds in the movie emphasise the campiness of the movie, but in a good way. Second, this movie has a lot of funny and memorable jokes. One of my favorites is when an illiterate farmer is looking at a barrel of nuclear waste, and in trying to read what is on the side of the container, points at it and says "Do not... open till... Christmas," with the last word being represented by a nuclear symbol. This movie is full of such silly jokes and campy dialogue.

Third, the movie gives you lots of things to think about, though because of the otherwise silly context, it never seems overbearing or condescending. Really, these situations just seem really wierd until you try to think about what is being said. One example of this involved a tied up girl on a couch, a really strange guy sitting next to her, and images of baby chickens being slaughtered on tv. It's freaky; it also makes you ask "what the hell is THAT about?"

Fourth, for such a campy movie, the characters are actually fairly well established early on, and developed nicely throughout the movie. In fact, there's a lot more characterization involved here than in most hollywood block busters. If you actually like this movie, you won't easily forget Ellie May, or the drunk mute guy, or the Tobacco man. The characters here are definitely not your cookie cutter horror movie kills-waiting-to-happen.

And the fifth reason that I love this movie... it's unabashedly consistent, fun cheesiness. It doesn't try to be your typical horror-comedy, it's just total silliness (e.g., the kills are gory, but not gruesome).

If you're a fan of horror-comedy and/or silly low-budget movies, then I'd definitely recommend this one. It's one of the best that I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for a few reasons.......2006-09-02

Normally a movie of such low budget and acting skills would not receive about 3 stars. There are a few reasons why I have given it 4 stars.

1. The ending of the film is great. Most low budget zombie films are good until the ending.
2. The scenes of the people running away from the zombies are creative and funny. This movie was made over 10 years ago and used the comedy part of a man acting like a zombie to avoid being lunch.
3. The strange rednecks bring characters to each of the zombies instead of random walking rotting corpses.
4. The guy drinking various alcohols in each scene is great.
5. Each time you watch it, you catch something new.
6. Zombies don't look like video game zombies like the ones in "House of the Dead" and other bad films like that. Zombies are bad but bad in a funny way.
7. Using the still to spread the zombie plague is great. Even how the moonshine is dropped off shows a few classic scenes.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best crappy movies.......2006-05-04

This is def. a real "B" or Indie movie, shot on video. But as far as super low budget zombie movies, this is the best. Seems to be around the same budget as films like Flesh Freaks, and Dead Life for example and this blows them out of the water. Its funny and gory..holds true to TROMA Entertainment. Noticable influences from The Toxic Avenger, Zombie, and Day of The Dead. If your a zombie or troma fan, buy this dvd.

5 out of 5 stars The movie is as bad (good) as the title!!!.......2006-02-27

This is one of the funniest movies evermade, it is also incredibly gory. I don't
know what the other viewers were expecting when they watched this fantastically horrible piece of garbage but if you go in watching with incredibly low expectations, like I did, you will be very happy. This movie is best viewed with a like minded friend so that someone is there to laugh when you make a third rate MST3K comment. If you like anything from Troma you must buy this movie.

1 out of 5 stars REDNECK ZOMBIES - THE DIRECTOR'S CUT DVD REVIEW:.......2006-02-05

Obviously this movie is crap, what do you expect? I knew before watching this movie it was going to be s##t. This type of movie is suppose to be funny even though it is listed under the horror category in your local video store.

FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN WATCHING THIS MOVIE, GET REALLY HIGH OR DO SOME KIND OF DRUG BEFORE YOU WATCH IT.

5 out of 5 stars Garfield travel adventures.......2007-06-18

If you are a garfield fan like I am, this DVD is an excellent choice. The stories are great, and I highly suggest this to anyone who doesn't crave action. Action is absent on this DVD, but that is fine because it is not designed for action. Roughing It is the first show. It is the best of them all. I bought this DVD after watching the Garfield movie. I expected Garfield to put up with roughing it the way he did-bad. The next one was average. Paradise island is some kind of scam that Jon falls for. He buys the vacation, only to find that he was ripped off. The third showing is about a pet talent show. This one is good too. It is great because Garfield is in his dreamland. A new Garfield. So, if you enjoyed the Garfield movie, I reccomend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars More of Garfield at his best!.......2006-12-29

It's so great to finally see the specials from my youth appearing on DVD these days. My fondest memories were of the Garfield ones, with Lorenzo Music's incomparable voice and Jim Davis' lovable characters. Garfield was always my favorite growing up and the DVDs are a must-have for any fan of the fat feline.

"Garfield in the Rough" (which won an Emmy, by the way) tells the tale of Garfield, Jon and Odie on a camping vacation in the woods. While Jon and Odie are loving the great outdoors, Garfield misses his comfy bed and familiar house. Things get hairy, though, when an escaped panther is thought to be in the area. Funny, touching and very worthy of the Emmy!

For the island-lovers out there, "Garfield in Paradise" takes the family once again on vacation, but this time to a remote island, where Jon didn't get exactly what he bargained for. (Garfield: "Oh, you bargained for it alright.") The supporting characters are hilarious and look for a cameo by Wolfman Jack as the 'tribe leader.'

Finally, "Garfield Goes Hollywood" takes the fence act of Garfield and Odie to the world of television, where they win a trip to compete nationally in Hollywood. Quite possibly the most 'moral' of the stories, we see how the family grips with fame and living the high life away from home.

Garfield fans, this is a must-own for your DVD collection! For anyone who is interested in good clean family fun in a cartoon, this is also a must-own for you as well. Garfield was, and continues to be, one of the most hilarious and poignant cats on the tube, and we should be thankful that they have finally released the specials on DVD. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Paws on funny stuff..........2005-08-12

This is a great dvd and i really enjoyed it... it is a fantastic family dvd!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great item - especially if you have children!.......2005-07-19

You have to get this DVD. This DVD has three stories as indicated; Garfield going to Hollywood where he loses to an opera-singing cat; Garfield in the rough where he's almost eaten by a panther, and Garfield in paradise where he is on a "bum" vacation with cheapo Jon. I actually bought these for a toddler who absolutely LOVES them and asks to watch them daily. This is a very long DVD and for a toddler to be able to sit there that long shows quite a bit for the entertainment value of this DVD. Garfield in the Rough was a 1984 Emmy winner, and Garfield in Paradise (1986) and Garfield Goes Hollywood (1987) were Emmy nominees. That said, if you're a Garfield fan, then you need this DVD. Highly recommended for all the Garfield lovers in your life! :)

    The episodes are:
    'Garfield in the Rough'
    'Garfield in Paradise'

This truly is an amazing DVD to see. For me it's been really cool to see these bands performing while just beginning, what in many cases, turned out to be legendary careers. The groovy outfits and hair can be quite amusing as well! Particular favorites are seeing a very young Barry Manilow, a very funky, afro-clad, Natalie Cole and of course seeing Aretha singing with Ray Charles! Also, Kiss is quite entertaining with their use of pyrotechnics...And clearly, seeing Helen Reddy sing "I Am Woman" is a delight :) Factory sealed "New"!!!

5 out of 5 stars All the concerts I missed and MTV did not exist.......2006-12-25

Watching the live 1970s TV performances that I missed in my early 20s, (didnt go to concerts either) only enhanced my enjoyment of this album. Most of the artists were my age then, yet I was aware that their talent represented breakthrough music for a new generation, space exploration, and the new transience of relationships . What stands out were the performances of David Bowie in his Alladin Sane phase, the steve miller band, Blondie, Donna Summer, Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, Peter Frampton and Al Green. The performers were in the prime of their youth performing their million dollar sellers with their original musicians or duet partners as with David Bowie or Peter Frampton and their own original lyrics. They seemed fresh, and their voices were confident. They had fun being with so many other acts on the same night and the audience was small enough to be intimate. They were on a par with seeing Elton John live with a great band 1 1/2 years ago at MSG for a Katrina benefit. The great camera angles caught the light in their eyes and their smiles as though I had a front row seat.

          Description

Oscar Nominee William Hickey in one of his last screen performances stars in Seth Michael Donsky's "Twisted," a contemporary riff on Charles Dickens' classic "Oliver Twist" re-imagined in a New York city subculture brimming with male hustlers, homeless denizens, drug addicts and drag queens.

"A stylized, operatic fable of innocence and corruption, its world and that of Dickens' is one and the same." - Kevin Thomas, The Los Angeles Times

Written and Directed by Seth Michael Donsky

          "Twisted"

          Recognize Oliver?

          Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Oliver Twist" has taken on yet another update with the release of "Twisted". This time the scene of the action is the gay underground in New York City. However, any resemblance between this movie and the novel by Charles Dickens is very hard to fid. Even the names of the characters have been changed. Oliver is now Lee, a young man who must take care of himself by living on the streets. The Artful Dodger is now Fine Art, a hard hustler with bleached blonde hair and who will do anything for a dollar. Fagin is now Andre, a momma's boy and Bill Sykes and Nancy are now a couple who are into S & M and Nancy, who is now Angel, is Lee's protector.
The script is a mess. The director somehow lost his vision and what we have is a very gritty movie that does have some very good acting. In an attempt to make this into an art film, there are many fancy images, flashbacks and very strange juxtapositions. Instead of advancing the story, thy hinder any kind of plot delineation and the screenplay becomes an odd retelling of the original with very strange results. There is not anything good to say about the editing or the photography or the lighting. There are times when I had to strain my eyes to make out what was happening on the screen.
The character that shows the most promise is the drag queen. I am still trying to figure out what the tone and point of view of the film are. Yet the guys are eye candy but the film becomes boring very quickly. This is too bad because there is a lot of promise here. With a different director and a better screenplay, this could have been a wonderful film.

          3 out of 5 stars Merely Average.......2006-08-04

I consider the movie to be average; it did not appear to be a particularly clever take on the original tale - and the acting didn't particularly engage me.

          2 out of 5 stars Ehhh. .......2006-07-14

I wanted to like this movie so much more than I actually did. Unfortately it was pretty much a mess from beginning to end.

A great performance from Anthony Crivello though.

4 out of 5 stars A New Twist for Oliver Twist.......2001-11-09

What really makes this low-budget, indi film are the magnificent performances of this highly talented ensemble cast. Seth Michael Donsky, who wrote and directed it, had an excellent idea: set Charles Dickens' classic "Oliver Twist" in contemporary New York City. God knows, not much has changed since Dickens wrote his socially critical study of a young orphan boy, caught in the grips of an unfair society. With the low-budget that Donsky obviously had, he makes a valiant attempt at creating a visually dark and atmospheric montage of the underbelly of modern urban society. He doesn't always succeed, and the film is at points muddled, but the ultimate effect is strong.

The Twist: "Oliver", or as he's called here, Lee, has run away from an abusive foster home and fines comfort and shelter from the elderly street performer, Can Man (beautifully played by Ray Aranha). Can Man teaches him about dreams being the basis of hope, and how you must keep your dreams safe. After Can Man is brutally murdered by a gang of thugs, Lee is comforted and brought "home" by Fine Art - a cute take off on "The Artful Dodger". Fine Art (Jean Loup Wolfman gives an eerie performance) is a young call-boy living in Andre's all-male brothel. The elderly Andre (no less than William Hickey) is the story's Euro-trash version of "Fagan", who is reliant on Eddie (akin to "Bill Sykes") for the house's supply of drugs. Eddie (a scary performance by Anthony Crivello) has a fairly large revere in the city under his control. He pimps his boys and runs his deals, and no one gets in his way and lives to tell about it. Angel (a beautiful and sensitive performance by David Norona) is Eddie's "Nancy". All Angel wants out of life is to make Eddie happy, and become a serious musician. The first is impossible and the later doesn't suit Eddie.

Angel meets Lee at Andre's and take an instant liking to the child. He starts meeting Lee regularly to give him piano lessons. Andre of course, has a different career plan in mind for Lee and sends him out with Fine Art to learn the delicate art of hustling. Unfortunately, they hustle an undercover cop, who snaps Lee and turns him over to the juvenal authorities. Eddie and Andre fear what Lee might say, and strong-arm Angel into "kidnapping" him from the police.

In the end, Angel - along with his best friend, the drag queen, Shiniqua (Billy Porter is worth the price of the video), make a daring attempt at saving Lee's life while risking their own.

Independent movie-making almost at its best!

4 out of 5 stars Great Independent Film.......2001-08-19

A valiant attempt to bring to life the epic story of Oliver (Academy Award Winning Masterpiece) and transform it into modern day society and culture. It's quite the twist from the original musical version. From the attractive gay brothel boys run by Andre (played by William Hickey), to the hilarious protective drag queen, what more can you ask for in a story! Great performances by Billy Porter (well known for his work on stage) as well as Anthony Crivello (which I last saw on Broadway in "Kiss of the Spider Woman w/ Chita Rivera), and of coursre William Hickey (which I loved in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) Highly recommend! A must see independent film
