Shot in sunny Toronto and set to a dreamy score, Lie With Me looks and sounds like an art film, but the end result isn't quite so lofty. The plot is thin and the dialogue superfluous, but no matter--Canada's Clément Virgo (Love Come Down) just wants to turn you on and he has enlisted two attractive, uninhibited young performers to assist in his aims. Leila (Lauren Lee Smith, The L Word) and David (Eric Balfour, Six Feet Under) meet at a party. He's with his girlfriend, but finds himself drawn to her. The feeling is mutual. She's alone, but quickly finds an unattached hipster with whom to have a tryst. David catches her in the act. Instead of turning away, he watches. They start seeing each other immediately afterwards. "I'm not hooked on danger, [I'm] hooked on sex," Leila claims, but she isn't exactly the most trustworthy narrator. She wants a purely physical relationship, while David wants something more. They return to their old lives, but the obsession refuses to die. Based on the novella by Virgo's partner, Tamara Berger, Lie With Me plays like a low-budget cross between Adrian Lyne's overrated 9 1/2 Weeks and Wayne Wang's underrated The Center of the World. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Lie With Me is more than just lust and sex. David for example doesn't know what he wants they show him with his dad, which we know is an invalid. He has trust issues just like Leila. When he first sees her, I think that he is infautated with her. He helps her at the party when she becomes dizzy, he watches her when she is walking through that wooded area. Basically he is in love with her. When Leila is having sex with that guy he can't help but feel lust for her at first. I mean the guy watches her and then they make a connection. Leila is dealing with the collaspe of her parents marriage and struggling with herself and what she wants. She meets David and she feels actual love i mean she can't be away from him for one second without wanting to feel him. She talks about how when she has sex that she can feel the pleasure inside of her but wants to feel something completely different with someone else. You guessed it that someone is David she wants to love him but she doesn't know how that is why she leaves him. Then she realizes how much she wants to be with him and he pushes her away. She is persistant and then she shows herself to him. In turn he rips out her heart and tells her he doesn't want to be with her, but that is all a lie cause the hurt in his eyes shows through. I think that Leila freaks out because she doesn't know how to comfort him when his dad dies, because you comfort the ones you love in their time of need. Plus i think Eric Balfour has a nice everything in that movie. Both are passionate towards each other even in those scenes when he gets jealous or is still grieving he hurts and the one person who he loves, leaves him. I don't think that he needs a mommy i thinks he needs a lover and someone to show him who he is. Also when they show Leila like having sex form behind i think that she is scared to let someone make actual love to her but David changes that i mean he asks her out on a date. You don't date someone you just want to have sex with. I love this movie i mean yeah theres graphic nudity but its hot and steamy and the actors make David and Leila come to life. Both Eric Balfour and Lauren Lee Smith are the perfect actors to play them.

5 out of 5 stars A range of emotions on film.......2007-06-24

I bought this movie out of curiosity. I love this movie because of the range of emotions many of us experience when one desires and loves. Virgo uses long scenes with few cuts and dialogue to show what's felt when one falls for another. There's lust, attachment, uncertainty, and resolution. The movie shows how one may grow or regress because of these feelings. Rather than lots of dialogue, Virgo uses the nonverbal communication to show what's felt - the trembling of the lips with anticipation, the attachment to another when kissing their arm while asleep, or the misery and disconnect from being without the other. The plot is simple, but many of us have felt the contents of the movie at some point in time. This movie is the first that has delved into the depth of these feelings and put it brillantly on film.

If you're looking for erotic scenes, they're definitely there, and add to the content of the movie. However, if you're thinking this movie is about nothing but sex, you're misled.

Lie With Me will make you think and feel for these characters. Take the 90 minutes; it's worth the time.

2 out of 5 stars Clement Virgo's Lie With Me is self-indulgent porn masquerading as an 'art' film.......2007-06-23

I've learnt to spot the danger signs of an impending bad movie. One of them is when the director is also the screenwriter and producer -- in short, there's no one there to put the brakes on when the film starts to get too self-absorbed. Such is the case with this Canadian indie film that seems to have gone straight to video.

Based on Tamara Berger's novel of the same name (published by the appropriately named Gutter Press), we meet Leila (Lauren Lee Smith), a young woman at a party. She's more than a little tipsy, and looks to be on the scrawny side, dressed clearly with the message that she's there to get laid -- oops, I mean have a good time. One man there is pretty bold about eyeing her, and the pair end up in the bathroom, where he helps her to sober up a little with a drink of water. It almost turns into sex, but his girlfriend calls for him outside and he leaves. He, we find out, is named David (Eric Balfour).

She leaves the party, taking with her Shy Guy (Michael Facciolo), and proceeds to have sex with him outside, up against a chain-link fence. Sitting in his car, watching the pair, is none other than David, along with his girlfriend. David and Leila watch each other getting laid, mimicing each others actions, as it were. At this point, I had a pretty good idea of what this film was going to be about, but as I have this thing about finishing the book or film I start, I didn't turn it off right away.

Eventually, Leila and David meet up again, this time in a public playground, and in a daring moment, she exposes herself to him, making her own interest pretty well known. They move onto his apartment for sex, and the sexual compulsion between the two of them gets going. And in fact that's what most of this film is about -- we're either watching Leila and David going at it like deranged rabbits, or she's letting us know her thoughts and experiences in a voice over that supposed to be titillating and erotic, but sounds more like a bad memoir.

The relationship is pretty predictable -- lust, jealousy phase, playing house together phase, she tries to get it past sex, he withdraws and treats her like trash, they break up, and so on and so forth. Yawn. We've seen this before. While I have to say that the sex at least looks real and honest, the rest of the film isn't that interesting. David, in particular, strikes me as the sort of young man that is fashionable these days -- unshaven, grungy and without any visible means of support. He does take care of an elderly, ailing father, so I guess that's something in his favour. But who in their right mind goes about in dirty jeans without underwear? I had a strong urge to go dip him in a vat of lye.

Leila's not much better. She's perpetually rumpled in skimpy clothing that looks to be ready to fall off at anytime. It's a cheap and sleazy look, and if she's looking for true love or respect from men, it's not a way to really inspire it either. Her personal life isn't that much better -- her parents are going through a divorce, her job is a dead-end job, she seems to spend her free time on the couch watching porn, or partying it up with weed and alcohol. She's not someone I would really care to know in reality either.

In short, this is a couple made for each other. Neither one of them are very responsible, and frankly, he treats her like a piece of meat. I suppose this is what makes this a modern, young adult relationship, sex without strings or emotion. And while the sex does get interesting, I've seen far far better in x-rated film, the only thing this lacks is what is known as the money shot in the trade.

Indeed, Virgo tries to make this as arty as possible, with lots of soft lighting, on location shots in Toronto, use of colour and texture, and I guess that works. But there isn't any sort of plot in this except for the so-called romance between the two leads, and their sexual shenanigans. Oh, there's an attempt or two with the illness of one parent, and the impeding divorce, but the central relationship is so tawdry, the viewer is left with the attitude of so what? by the end.

I don't demand syrupy romance, as long as there is some sort of passion there, but these two are so out of touch with themselves, how can they possibly make it work with each beyond the rubbing together of two body parts? That was the other big complaint with this one -- no one hits a climax that fast, and here it's the slam-bam-thankee-ma'am sort of sex. I kept thinking that she must have had insides of old leather to put up with that.

This is not for children of any age, and I would suspect that most adults would find it a bit on the disturbing side. There is quite a bit of sex in this, with male and female frontal nudity, sex in public, public exposure, sex in public, in cars, with lots of foul language and every form of straight sex that can be performed. There's plenty of drug and alcohol abuse as well. But they do try with a bit of condom use -- after all, this is the age of safe sex, I suppose.

No subtitles, some lackluster trailers for other films, and a voice-over commentary from the director. Nothing really special to watch either.

This is certainly a D-list film. Those who prefer their film to have sex and be honest about it might find a few minutes worth watching, but this 100-minute clunker has nothing else going for it. Those who are looking for a love story will be turned off by the callous brutality and attitudes. It's not a likeable film at all, and I urge you to spend your time with something, anything, else.

Not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars a porn movie disguised as a 'b' movie.......2007-06-21

this movie was about a female sex maniac seeking free rides in the city of angels. there were lot of love making scenes in this hollow movie. the screenplay writer was the original author of that book titled in the same name. if this movie was shot in the '70s timeline, i'd accepted it unconditionally, but regretfully, this is a 2005 movie, aids, hiv and other diseases transmitted from random sex are real. so every time when this young woman involved in free sex, i was just sick to death.
a big question here: what's the point of making this movie?

5 out of 5 stars It's like watching a car wreck, only prettified.......2007-06-10

I saw this movie on cable one night and couldn't help but purchase it on DVD. There were some elements that if you take them one by one, are not great by itself, but taken as a whole, it sorta worked. The 2 main characters were openly flawed; both had their own background stories, but to me, the movie was really about the heroine. Leila (Lauren Lee Smith) was your typical hookup girl. She looks like a disheveled model with committment issues, and she has a face that sorta grows on you-- she's not pretty right away. She also doesn't say anything new (how guys don't feel love, all they think about is sex blah blah), but just like what my title suggests, it's something you can't help but watch anyway. Part of that feeling too is that the two protagonists look like they can be a real-life couple. They both look like models, but not typical (annoying) Abercrombie, just good-looking without trying too hard. David (Eric Balfour) did his part of looking good and sexy...I didn't focus on his acting too much; He certainly looked desirable enough that would merit the fuss over him. I really appreciated the scenes that showed sexual restlessness; it's late in the afernoon, there's-nothing-to-do-and-I'm-lonely/frisky and Leila is by herself...It was a relief to see that after a rebuff, Leila didn't go out shopping or hang out with the girls and sputter self-righteous crap.

Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars A Directorial Failure.......2007-07-01

Steve Carell can be a good actor, witness his performance in Little Miss Sunshine and he receives some great support here from Catherine Keener and Romany Malco, but somehow it just doesn't work. The idea behind the film is tenuous, and is made even more so by modeling the hero on Pee Wee Herman (grown man rides bicycle, collects action figures). Carell simply comes across as being silly.

There are some uproariously funny scenes, which justify the time worth watching the film, but like a Chinese dinner, you'll feel empty an hour later.

5 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2007-06-27

This is a good laugh of a movie. You have to see it. I've watched it like a lot. You have to have a gr8 sense of humor and sillyness. Don't take it personally if you relate to the main guy. He is hilarious....

1 out of 5 stars Horrible piece of you know what.......2007-06-17

Terrible terrible movie. Not funny in the least. I heard so much buzz about how this was the funniest thing ever so I made the mistake of watching this on TV. My God what a horrible movie. Not funny at all. I guess people now a days have no idea what a good comedy is.

5 out of 5 stars R-rated Widescreen...Finally Available.......2007-06-15

"The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is finally available in all of its R-rated glory in widescreen format! (The original unrated DVD and R-rated full screen versions were released in December 2005, while the new R-rated widescreen wasn't available until January 2006.)

For those unfamiliar with the unrated version, it was the exclusive widescreen version available up until now, and included 17 additional minutes of "outrageous" deleted scenes that were left on the cutting room floor for good reason. The R-rated version is a comedic gem, and has finally gotten its due with this widescreen DVD release.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites!!!.......2007-06-10

This is one of the best comedies of all time!! I've watched it 25-30 times! The unrated DVD has some really great deleted scenes that are must-sees!!

Join the Joie de Vivre club with the maddeningly charming Lola, as she plots to loosen up her fiancé in this exuberant comedy. Everyone is wild about Lola - even, some suspect, her own stepfather…

Originally titled "Monella (Rascal)", "Frivolous Lola" has generally been available in censored versions. Here, for the first time outside of Italy, and with Subtitles, is the uncut masterwork of erotica at its most humorous. Long renowned for his work in documentaries and the avant-garde, director Tinto Brass is now famous as the world's premier erotic filmmaker, turning out movies that have bridged the gender gap, earning at least as many ardent female admirers as male fans. "Frivolous Lola" is perhaps his most likeable film yet.

1 out of 5 stars You Rascal You.......2007-02-15

This is a waste of film. Tinto Brass probably wanted to make a tease-flick, but this is just a shame. The young lady who can't keep her skirt down flaunts her desire for sex before marriage in such a way as to embarass the viewer - especially shameful is the bar scene where she keeps displaying her crotch to a table of soldiers in order to get her boyfriend jealous. Too bad this went too far. The Italian title, "Rascal," is a better fit for this one.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever Lola Wants.......2007-01-13

It seems to be a leading lady in a Tinto Brass film you must:

* Be young and attractive
* Have an exceptional sensuous body
* Not be shy about nudity
* Exude a cheerful, lighthearted persona
* Act loveably naughty.

That has been the case in the previous Brass films I have watched and reviewed and Frivolous Lola is no exception. Rumor has it that the inscrutable producer of erotica met the vivacious young actress, Anna Ammirati while examining her body. The body of her car that is, after being involved in a traffic accident with her. It doesn't matter whose fault it was, the outcome was inevitable - Anna gallivanting around with little or no clothing in his next movie. Anna is reputed to have entreated the enigmatic director to feature her in his next movie and a enchanting match was born.

The Plot

Lola is a carefree lass in an unnamed village in Italy of some notoriety and gossip. Her mother who grew up there, left years before but returned with a handsome paramour, Andr'e and a vibrant sexually precocious teen daughter, Lola.

Lola is a virgin a condition she dislikes. She is engaged to the son of the village baker, Masetto, whom she wants to deflower her. Masetto would like to wait for their wedding night and this frustrates Lola.
A sub plot of the movie is Lola's relationship with her alleged father, Andr'e. They both find each other and find each other attractive.

The Story

The story revolves around Lola's efforts to get Masetto to make love with her and thus take her virginity. She tries various tricks, including making him jealous by coming on with other men. There was even a scene in a tavern where she is jitterbugging with three soldiers, sans her panties, with flashes of her genital folds and pubis.

Lola's alleged father Andr'e fascinates her. He is somewhat of a leach with prurient instincts and she is drawn to and fanaticizes about him. She makes a couple unsuccessful attempts to seduce him.

In the end Lola does trick Masetto into deflowering her - her term and at their wedding the next day a scene takes place between Lola and Andr'e where you are left wondering, no believing that they also have sex.

In hindsight it may be a take on that old song of the fifties, "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets."

Conclusion

Lola is indeed frivolous and afew other adjectives ranging from adorable to bratty. Her self-centered thoughtless behavior is nothing short of tawdry. If there are women that behave so flippant, I wouldn't want to be engaged to them. Yet, as a viewer there is something winsome about her frolicsome, lighthearted, even compelling behavior.

As with other Brass movies I have viewed a typical theme permeates Frivolous Lola. Nothing is shameful to her. She with the overactive libido was born to enjoy life and she resents anyone that wants to rein her in, while her man is supposed to go along with her indiscretions

Frivolous Lola is an exercise in exhibitionism. The movie seems to be a memorial to Lola's or is it Anna Amirati's shapely figure with voyeuristic peeks at her genitalia. The story seems incidental, it is merely a vehicle to attain the desired effect.

I do not mean to sound like this is bad. Contrary, it is good. I found the movie to be funny entertaining and stimulating - one of his best and one of the better erotica movies available.

The lovely Anna Amirati was uniformly naughty and loveable. Her body was adorable and her acting endearing. Supporting actors, Packtrick Mower and Mario Parodi did well too.

The film was shot in what appeared to be the Italian countryside. The sets and costumes were colorful and the cinematography was first rate. Rating 4.6 stars

Soft core porn masquerading as art, I didn't even make it through the first half hour of this film. Lola's cute, but it's still not worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars A great tease.......2006-09-13

Lola is a young woman/girl in a superficially conservative village who seems to just love not wearing a bra behind semi transparent blouses and dresses and flashing her [..] at priests as she rides her bicycle around town. Lola is VERY sexy, a bit too sexy for her own good it seems, but all is well in the end, everyone seems to get a bit and we all just have to sit back and allow Lola to show herself to us and enjoy. It is funny and sexy, what more could you ask for?

It seems to be a leading lady in a Tinto Brass film you must:

* Be young and attractive
* Have an exceptional sensuous body
* Not be shy about nudity
* Exude a cheerful, lighthearted persona
* Act loveably naughty.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-11-10

Adam and Eve has an interesting premise with a lot of potential as a thoughtful, adult movie. Disheveled musician and college student Adam (Cameron Douglas, son of Michael Douglas) goes out of his way to meet the beautiful Eve (Emmanuelle Chriqui) on campus. In no time, the two are in love. Everything goes swimmingly except in the bedroom, where Eve asserts her right to remain a virgin until she's ready. Adam--though deferential--takes her requirement personally and demands to know what "ready" means. The pair go on like this for months, with Adam remaining true to his passion for Eve, despite howls of protest from his degenerate housemates (among them Jake Hoffman, son of Dustin Hoffman). Eve takes flak, too, from some of her own roomies, yet for awhile it appears Adam and Eve's story will include other young women inspired by Eve's insistence on respect behind closed doors. Unfortunately, writer-director Jeff Kanew (Revenge of the Nerds) elects not to go down that path and nearly derails the movie with inconsequential gross-out scenes at Adam's house. But the material dedicated to Adam and Eve's challenging relationship is discerning. --Tom Keogh

Description

In the tradition of National Lampoon's Animal House and National Lampoon's Van Wilder comes this wildly hilarious comedy about a guy who wants to date a girl who wants to wait. Adam (Cameron Douglas) is a typical college-aged guy, which is to say he wants sex 24 hours a day. But when he meets, and falls for, Eve (Emmanuelle Chriqui) a scorchingly hot co-ed who's still very attached to her virginity, the waiting game is on! While his college buddies score right and left, and campus hotties make tempting passes, Adam ponders an explosive question: Will Eve say "it's the right time," before he goes completely out of his mind?

1 out of 5 stars Flee this film, at all costs.......2007-01-21

Most will watch this film to see virginity lost--after all, it is a National Lampoon title. A few may watch it to see how to keep their virginity until they marry, or perhaps die. Some like me will stumble upon it on late night cable, and find it a nearly perfect cure for insomnia. How could I know any one film could be so bad? In a spirit of genuine concern, I formally warn you.

No plot, no acting, no skin, no comedy, no action. This is not even useful for a Sunday school class on virginity. It is an atrocity and a zero. Rent Animal House or Vacation if you want real National Lampoon material, or anything else you please; just avoid this soap opera.

1 out of 5 stars Very gross. Little else.......2006-04-15

NATIONAL LAMPOON has come out with some great party movies. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. The premise is pretty straightforward: a girl in college does not want to go "all the way" with her b/f because she wants everything to be special. That's fair enough and is also understandable.

IF the movie would have only focused on that and nothing else (and I can live with it being over an hour shorter), then it would have been OK. The reason? Easy. Emmanuelle Chriqui is absolutely STUNNING as Eve. Her beauty fills of the screen; I'd love to see more of her work and hope that she gets better roles in much better movies than this farce.

Unfortunately, too much of the movie is about the subplot of living @ a fraternity house. To be sure, this is a very common motif in NATIONAL LAMPOON movies. The problem is, the fellow frat-boys of Adam are beyond disgusting. Moreover, the movie wants to "push the envelope" of being nasty, relying on shock-value more than doing something because it has any humor value.

Cameron Douglas is a goon; I was a bit surprised to learn that he was the son of Michael Douglas. He certainly does not have any acting ability whatsoever, unlike his father & grandfather. Apparently in this film he is a sort of Ron Jeremy anti-hero type; the dufus guy who ends up with the sizzling hot babe.

This is the bottom line, and I will be as fair as I can be: if you crave bathroom humor and simply can't get enough of it, then by all means buy this DVD. If bathroom humor is your "thing," then this DVD is a dream-come-true.

However, if like me a little bit of that stuff goes a LONG way, then check out other, better NATIONAL LAMPOON movies such as BARELY LEGAL and VAN WILDER. The choice is your's.

2 out of 5 stars After school special everyone........2006-03-30

This movie is sometimes a comedy but mostly it deals with a real relationship and the problems that come into it when Eve wants to stay a virgin. Little bits are thrown in for comedic value and they center around Adam's roomates in college who are all disgusting (I would reccommend not eating while watching these parts, it could ruin your meal). Overall, everyone will see Eve as a total beyotch because she is being totally unfair in the relationship while Adam is a totaly douche. I would not reccommend this movie for it's comedic value, but maybe as an afterschool special? Ha

1 out of 5 stars Oh Lord, please don't let amatures sell in national markets, otherwise, how will we know?.......2006-03-17

Look. We rented this "film" because we thought the premise had merit. Finally, something outside the Bud-beer-comercial sameness everything in our culture pushes. Bravo to the film on that. Bravo! It DID tackle the subject with seriousness. At no time did it stray from that intention. OK. Good for you.

GAWD was this BORING! GAWD was this amaturish! Dear Lord in Heaven, please help kids who want to spend a few weekends slapping together a "film" (entirely shot on videotape) with the dialogue, with the plot (so it's not so predictable), with the CAMERAWORK that doesn't look like Uncle Dave got ahold of his camcorder. What's with all the smoke in the rooms? Too much!

A good student film.

National Lampoon will put their name in front of anything now.

Ladies and Gentlemen... like the main character dude in the film, when renting or buying "films", check anything before you take it out for the night... make sure you're clear if it's going to give you a urinary tract infection... or if it's still figuring out how to do this whole filmmaking thing for the first time. I want a new rating. "A" for amature.

4 out of 5 stars Great "Guy" humor.......2006-03-11

Adam and Eve proved that "guy" humor at its funniest, is best served raunchy. I thought Adam's character was believable and well acted, although I doubt Cameron Douglas has had much experience with "blue balls." Eve's character was beautiful, intelligent and evoked my respect. The actress has a great ass and great assets as an actress. I thought the script was sincere, very funny and relevant. Adam and Eve treats a woman's "right to choose" to be a virgin in college (oh my God, imagine that!) with respect and a raunchy dose of humor.

3 out of 5 stars Cute boys, poor acting, ok plot.......2006-12-05

This movie picked some good actors and teels a fun story, but the acting is a bit subpar. Still a fun eyecatching movie.

4 out of 5 stars This Is My Story.......2006-11-16

My name is Marcus and I dated a bristish Model. When I picked this up and read the back my jaw dropped and I began to cry, because Tyler and I had just broken up. The story follows pretty closely (with the exception) of a few details here and there what happened bewteen Tyler and I. I can't tell you how stunned I was while watching the movie. It also was really well done...sorry guys not hard core porno scenes here.

Hopefully...in time I will have the same happy ending

3 out of 5 stars Mildly Entertaining.......2006-09-22

If you just want some light summer entertainment, this movie is fine. It's predictable, but sweet and ultimately romantic. The production values and writing are extremely weak, though in some cases, this gives the film a more realistic feel. The biggest problem is the acting and casting. I realize it's a movie, but is everyone in New York this perfect looking?? It's like they cast a bunch of models and that in itself is part of the problem. The acting is extremely uneven. Jamie Hatchett as Tyler and Jesse Archer as Luke both have tons of charm and presence that draw you to their characters. They seem very natural on screen, particularly Hatchett. But Casper Andreas is one of the worst actors I've ever seen and since he's the main character, Markus, that's a problem. He has a very strange way of talking and almost seems to have an accent of some sort. He seems to equate saying something in a strange and loud way with emoting. There's a scene where Markus and Tyler are talking after going on a date that is one of the worst I've seen, the acting is literally painful. Also doing a poor job is Virginia Bryan as the requisite fag hag. Her performance is so over the top crazy at all times I found myself groaning whenever she appeared on the screen. That said, if you just want to look at some pretty guys and be mildly amused, you could do worse.

1 out of 5 stars Another bad movie in an unreliable genre.......2006-08-21

When people set out to make gay themed films, it seems the last thing on their minds is film. These people shouldn't be making films - they are so bad at it. Slutty Summer is simply another in a long line of bad gay films. And for some unknown reason Americans do this worse than just about any other major film making nation. Why? This film is poorly scripted, directed and badly acted. Guys, get your priorities right. Please!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped........2006-10-25

After watching and enjoying a light sexy romp by Tinto Brass called Cheeky. I decided to try another Tinto brass movie. Alas, Miranda didn't do much for me. Miranda is eighteen years older than Cheeky and that might be part of the problem; softcore movies may have loosend up in the intervening years.

But that wasn't the only problem. The women of Cheeky were generally more attractive to me. They were trimmer and slimmer as opposed to full figured and there were more of them. Underarm hair was shaved and the ladies pubis was trimmed in the latter movie.

The stories were about equally dumb and the acting in both cases was average. Still Cheeky caught my attention while Miranda lost it.

4 out of 5 stars good softcore from Tinto Brass.......2006-10-15

Good softcore, sexy, subtle, not as edgy as Frivilous Lola, or 'all Ladies do it' but good.

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2006-03-12

If you dislike "The Key" then you won't like this one either. I find both films to be the least likeable films of Tinto Brass, who is otherwise a great director of Erotica. 2 stars for the leading lady... but that's it.

Even though Amazon lists this as the Not Rated version, it is not; it has the same run time as the R rated version. If you buy this you will receive not the Not Rated nor the Unrated version, but the R. I did and that's what I got. The unrated has a run time of 96 min, and this one, as stated by Amazon, has a run of only 78 min. Believe me, I have both, and they have cut the good stuff out to make the R version. Why?
You can get a 96 minute Unrated version of this masterpiece under the title 'Insatiable Wives', but it is a basic edition lacking even a chapter index.
Is Amazon too busy counting their profits to keep their listings acurate?

Two different kinds of movie coexist within this low-budget thriller. One is a civilized sci-fi picture, with a discreet monster (we barely see him, actually) and more impenetrable scientific jargon than you hear in an average episode of ER. The other is a British police procedural, with lots of men in trench coats marching stolidly around murky London streets. Neither works especially well, which may be why Night Caller from Outer Space isn't better known to film history--even under its alternate title, the more lurid Blood Beast from Outer Space. A glowing beach ball lands in English farm country, allowing an alien from Jupiter's moon Ganymede to beam himself down. The alien places an ad in Bikini Girl magazine (hey, it was swinging London, remember?) in order to lure human females into his plan to repopulate his planet. Pretty dull overall, with journeyman B-movie actor John Saxon as the token American presence. The ending is actually rather surprising, and includes a little Day the Earth Stood Still jibe at mankind's insistence on messing up a perfectly good world. The theme song at the beginning is surprising, too, adding an irrelevant touch of soft-jazz romance to an already askew movie. --Robert Horton

Description

Unique special effects combine with taut suspense in this gripping tale of a city caught up in a nightmare! A baffling alien object falls from the sky, a few miles outside London. The city becomes prey to a series of deadly kidnappings. Innocent women are being stalked, then disappearing without a trace. When it becomes apparent the reign of terror is caused by the horrifying creature from outer space, it's a chase to find him, before many more women fall into his clutches.

4 out of 5 stars Opening intro score; (UK) Different to U.S.!!!.......2007-01-27

There have been many good reviews about this odd little film already by fellow IMDB users.
One note of interest however, is that very unfortunately the new crisp release of 'The Night Caller' has omitted the fantastic opening (UK)score to the film.
"Image" was recorded by Alan Haven; A superb musician who specialised in Hammond Organ, the opening scenes have a tracking shot over London by night and the music on original U.K. release, perfectly captures the essence of Mid-sixties Britain.
The piece has a spooky organ mix set to a mod (ish) and orchestral background, it has become a bit of a 'Northern Soul' classic in the UK having been released in Britain in February 1965!
Great shame then, that the USA release has a totally inappropriate male vocalist-romantic-lounge piece SINGING the title track!
For those who haven't heard the UK original you'd be very pleasantly surprised...

3 out of 5 stars night caller from outer space.......2006-08-05

Even it's set in London 1965 , It's a pretty good movie in the Scifi category.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Movie To Watch.......2006-02-24

Truth be told, the only reason I bought this movie was because my favorite actor, John Carson, was in it. All in all, it's a fun movie to watch when you want just that - a fun movie to watch. The plot was certainly different, the ending was VERY odd, but all in all, it was fun. John Saxon was an odd casting to this - I wasn't really sure if he was supposed to be "British" because sometimes he had a slight accent, while other times he didn't. The only thing I didn't like was that my favorite guy was killed. The quality of the picture was amazingly fantastic - very crisp and clear! I've got DVD's of television shows and movies made today and the quality is nothing like this. The quality alone of the picture is 5 Stars! Enjoy and just have fun watching it!

5 out of 5 stars Much Better Than The Cover Would Suggest.......2004-06-10

I am a huge fan of B-Movies from the 1950s to the present, and when I saw the cover art (surely a near reproduction of the original theater poster) I highly suspected that this would be a first class piece of cheese.

I was wrong.

This film is an extremely well made black and white psychological thriller from the mid 1960s. It is taut, has good (for the day) special effects, a plausible story line, genuine suspense, and excellent acting, especially by the young John Saxon (much better than his later role opposite Joe Don Baker in "Mitchell" that MST3K fans would be better acquainted with.) The story concerns an object from Ganymede (a moon of Jupiter) which is an energy door which allows a being, the night caller of the title, to come to Earth. The night caller sets up a system to recruit women (via ads in 'Bikini Girl' magazine!) to return to Ganymede with him. The plot is well executed, and keeps tension high throughout. The conclusion proves both dramatic and cautionary about the future of Earth, and is not overdone with the histrionics so common today.

I liked this film for totally different reasons than I expected to. Although frequently lumped in with other monster movies from that era, this film is well executed, well acted, and suspenseful from start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars Ganymede needs women..........2004-04-09

Ganymede ("GAN uh meed"), in case you weren't aware, is the seventh and largest of Jupiter's known satellites and third of the Galilean moons. It's also the name of a Trojan boy of great beauty whom Zeus carried away to be cup bearer to the gods. In the case of The Night Caller (1965), my reference relates to the very real moon and not the mythological figure.

This British film, directed by the prolific and well known John Gilling, stars John Saxon as Dr. Jack Costain, an American scientist working in a research facility in England. While doing some routine research work, an object is observed traveling to Earth. What makes it so strange is that it appears not to be a random piece of space flotsam, but an object guided by some unseen force. The military is also aware of the object, having tracked its' decent, has concern that it may be an atomic device from an unfriendly country, so they are actively seeking the mysterious widget. Once found, the mystery deepens as the orb, about the size of a bowling ball, is comprised of an unknown material and has a temperature of below zero.

After a couple of incidents, one involving a death, the cosmic bowling ball vanishes, and young women from the area begin disappearing. The women all seem to have a common link in that they answered an ad in a magazine, one that is calling for attractive women to model on television, promotional advertising, and such, and a strangely garbed individual calling himself Mr. Medra. As the police search for clues, Dr. Costain feels that the timing of the disappearance of the space orb and the missing girls are linked, along with this shady Medra character. The police, with the help of Dr. Costain, begin to put the pieces together, and the hunt for Medra begins. Will they learn the true nature of the sphere, Medra, and the missing girls? If you've read the cover of the box, you've probably already deduced that Medra is an alien and he is kidnapping the women to take back to his planet, Ganymede, so I don't think I am really giving anything away. For what purpose, though?

The Night Caller is listed as a horror/sci-fi film, but it has a strong element of mystery throughout as the police and Dr. Costain try to track down this Medra, and learn of the nature of his appearance on Earth, and for what purpose he needs the women. The casting of John Saxon in the lead role seems an odd one, but I suppose it was done to help the film sell within the US, as similarly done with other British productions like The Quatermass Experiment (1955) and The Trollenberg Terror (1958), starring American actors Brian Donlevy (actually, Donlevy was sort of a transplanted American, being born in Ireland but immigrating to the US early in his life) and Forrest Tucker, respectively. The science fiction portion is obvious, but certainly competes with the mystery element of the story. The horror aspect is not really in a visual sense, but more of an underlying theme as we are unaware of what purpose the women will serve, and if they will ever be seen again. The reference of the Night Caller is because the character Medra always stayed in the shadows, appearing only at night, and wore dark garments further shrouding himself in darkness. The box would appear to make this look like a cheap, schlocky, run of the mill science fiction feature, but when I saw that Gilling had directed it, I took a bit more interest in it, as I knew I would, at the very least, get an visually entertaining story. Not only that, but it's pretty intelligent and has a light smattering of comedy (the part where the police and Dr. Costain interview the parents of one of the missing girls is rife with your classical, dry British humor). I found surprising a few of the plot twists within the film, and found it interesting that the story developed the way it did. What really shocked (well, maybe not so much shocked, but more startled) me was the way the film ended. I didn't see it coming, and, while some may be unsatisfied with it, I thought it was a pretty gutsy move, going against the some of the conventions I am used to seeing in other science fiction films of the time.

Image Entertainment provides a really good looking print here in full screen format. I am unsure if this was the original aspect ratio, but it shows very little, if any signs of wear and tear. Also provided are fairly detailed listing of filmographies of director Gilling and Saxon, looking like complete listings, rather than `selected' listings as I am used to seeing whenever a disc has this feature. By the way, love that opening song sung in classical Las Vegas lounge style...you wouldn't think serious science fiction and cheesy lounge music could mix...and you'd be right.
