A serial killer is on the loose. Women are being killed and body parts are being stolen. The police are stumped (so to speak). Meanwhile, Egyptmania seems to be gripping this small Florida town. Fuad Ramses's "exotic catering" shop is doing a booming business and his book, Ancient Weird Religious Rituals, is being studied by the local book club. Is there a connection between Ramses and the murders? Of course! In this movie by the wizard of gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis, plot and suspense take a back seat to the gruesome and bloody murder scenes. The acting may not be very good, the script is weak at best, and the effects don't hold up to later standards of Hollywood gore, but there is an infectious enthusiasm that comes through Lewis's desire to shock his audience. The exploitation elements may be dated, but that only makes them all more entertaining. A shocking drive-in sensation when released in 1963, Blood Feast remains a milestone in the exploitation genre, followed (in what would come to be known as Lewis's "blood trilogy") by Two Thousand Maniacs! and Color Me Blood Red. --Andy Spletzer

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Zulu War Enthusiasts!!.......2004-02-29

If you are a fan of the Zulu and Zulu Dawn movies, this is a DVD that you should own. Mind you, it is a documentary feature, but it is extremely well done. History buffs in general should love it. The production values are outstanding, the narration by John Hurt is excellent, and there are commentaries by Ian Knight, surely, for we Americans, the leading expert and writer on the Zulu Wars. The great majority of the trio of features consist of live action reproduction, brialliantly acted, and filmed on location in South Africa. I hesitated before buying this, as I had never caught it on the Learning or History channels, there were no extant reviews, and the packaging did not initially inspire confidence. However, my hunch paid off, and this outstanding little gem is worth every penny.

Six hours of monosyllabic John Rambo high jinks, best savored in surround sound (for the bone-rattling explosions) and with your brain on pause (for everything else). Sylvester Stallone's second signature character, after Rocky, a seething ex-Green Beret killing machine, went from Viet-vet victim in the original picture, First Blood, flipping out over the ingratitude of his beloved homeland, to a muscle-bound terminator in Rambo III, mowing down Commies in the deserts of Afghanistan. You should consider bypassing the boxed set in favor of just the middle chapter, Rambo: First Blood Part 2, written by James Cameron and directed by George Pan Cosmotos. It's the most balanced and satisfying of the three films: Rambo is dropped back into 'Nam to rescue some POWs, and the action builds steadily in scale and ferocity. Each fireball seems to be bigger than the last. Of all the recent headbanger action movies, only the first Die Hard offers more bang for the buck. The underrated character actor Richard Crenna (a standout sleazebag in Body Heat), as Rambo's military mentor and staunch defender, is the series' secret weapon, providing some welcome human ballast. --David Chute

These 3 movies are Rambo at his best - it's best to watch all 3 consequetively. We like the first and the third the best.

5 out of 5 stars War Action + Sylvester Stallone = The Perfect Movie.......2006-11-29

No one could have played the part of Rambo better than Sylvester Stallone. He fits the profile of an invincible soldier perfectly: his war-trained, war-stricken , ripped-out body; his serious, aggressive, and somber disposition; and his reputation of being a hardcore action-packer. If Stallone alone isn't enough to draw you to the movie, the action contained within is. From crashing helicopters, to explosive arrows fired from his compound bow, to highly explosive napalm bombs, this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. A single viewing will not be enough once you have seen the series once. Inevitably you will want to see it again, so I recommend purchasing it.

5 out of 5 stars Sly, Why Are You So Good...?.......2005-11-03

Why are Sly's movies so great?

1.) The face.
Every time I watch a movie like Over The Top, I can't help but laugh. If you've watched the epic arm wrestling battle between Hawk and Bull Harley, you know exactly what I'm talking about. sylvester has that awesome face that only he can make... you know, the one that makes it look like he's taking one monster of a dump. Not only that, but while he's making the face he's usually grunting like he's taking one monster of a dump.

2.) The voice.
Sly's got that voice that draws laughs from everybody. There are certain phrases he says that can make me laugh no matter what mood I'm in. Sly's got some sort of wierd Brooklyn-ish accent that makes it tought for him to say his "r's" and his "th's"... as a result, "they" comes out as "dey", and a name like Adrian comes out sounding like "ADE-WIAN!" Here's a listing of some of my favorite Sly sayings:

From Over The Top : "My hat, it's like a switch... when I turn it backwards, I feel like a machine. I feel... kinda like dis twuck back heah!"

From Rocky : "ADE-WIAN!!!! ADE-WIAN!!!!"

From Rambo - First Blood : "Dey dwew first bwood, not me! Dey dwew first bwood."

From Judge Dredd : "I AM DA WAW!"

3.) He's Rambo!
Respect! This is the guy who portrayed John Rambo, the veteran from Vietnam who was harrased by law enforcement officials in a small town... arrested, for vagrancy! The movie was a classic then, and it remains a classic to this day. I don't care what you say, Rambo rocks the Casbah, and I wish Sly would star in another Rambo movie before he reaches his 65th birthday. Also, how many other R-Rated movies do you know that star a war veteran who is betrayed by his government, kills countless Vietnamese soldiers, pummels hapless small-town cops into submission, and shoots a government super-computer with a machine gun while going "YAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!" that managed to spawn its own children's cartoon and full line of action figures? NOT MANY! Despite Sly's appearances in movies like Driven and Get Carter, you can't hold those against him because Rambo overpowers the rubbishness of even those movies. If, for some reason, you get stuck watching Driven - which is a horrible, horrible show - just imagine how the movie would have been if Sly had acted as Rambo in that movie and you should be able to struggle through it.

4.) Jack of all Trades.
In the acting profession, Sly has done it all. He's an accomplished actor, script writer, and even director. He's starred in dramas, action flicks, and comedies. However, where sylvester has the most global appeal is the laugh factor. It doesn't matter if Sly's trying to be funny or not, any movie that Sly stars in is bound to get a laugh or two. Hell, Sly's funnier when he's NOT trying to be funny, as anyone who has seen 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!' will tell you. You might laugh because of some of his stupid dialogue... you might laugh because of something he's doing in the movie that you imitate later (like sylvester lifting weights inside of his semi and doing exercises on his truck in Over The Top)... or you might laugh because he scripted and directed an entire movie that was just plain cheesy (Driven!). For instance, my first impression of Driven was that it was a terrible movie. However, after talking with my mate, we realized just how funny the movie was... simply because Sly wrote the movie expecting it to be taken seriously! With dialogue like this, it's pretty hard to take any movie seriously. Keep in mind that it isn't exact, but I'm not watching that movie again just to provide you with an exact quote.

Sylvester as "The Hummer" Joe Tanto : You know what I'd do to get her back? I'd crawl!
Sylvester's Rival : You'd crawl Joe??!?!?! You'd never crawl!
Sylvester as "The Hummer" Joe Tanto : Ya I would crawl... I'd crawl till on my hands and knees till there's nothing left!

Bottom line is, no matter what Sylvester does, we can always laugh at it, and that makes it a worthwhile endeavour to go to ANY Sylvester movie. Hey, Sly, we're laughing with you man, not at you. Really.

5.) The 'dying breed' factor.
For the same reasons as Arnold, you should make a point of seeing Sylvester's new movies while you still can. Sure, the old man isn't pumping them out as regularly as he used to and when he does, it's usually some stupid sappy love story under the veil of an action movie. However, you have to appreciate the fact that Sylvester was, is, and always will be one of the greatest action movie stars of all time.

So take some time, rent a Sylvester and an Arnie flick tonight, and make sure to see their latest movies when they come out. You owe it to guys everywhere to support your local action movie star! The movie industry is already overrun with teenybopper movie stars and horrible teenage comedies... by passing up your opportunity the other weekend to see 'Collateral Damage' because your girlfriend wanted to go see Britney Spears' movie, you're only doing your part to see this hideous trend continue. Just remember that.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'VE GAHT TO GET OWDA HE-AH!

5 out of 5 stars Funny as hell.......2007-06-22

The movie is a homage to Friday the 13th and it actully works. The guy in the first movie looks like #6 from Slipknot. The movie seemed real, espeically the death scenes. The humour is not from lines in the movie, just the way the clown fights. The movies are a little over an hour but all are worth viewing. 3 movies on 1 dvd? Diffently worth the used price.

3 out of 5 stars Horrible movies = horribly funny.......2006-09-04

The Camp Blood films are hands down the worst movies i have ever seen in my entire life. They are pathetically acted, badly directed messes, but are very entertaining if you're into that sort of thing.

Camp Blood (1999) tells the tale of two couples and their guide that go into the woods for a weekend of camping and hiking, but are set upon by a person wearing a clown mask that has apparently been haunting the woods for several years now. It was shot on video rather than film on a budget that appears to be of upwards of $200-$300.

Camp Blood 2 (2000) It's been a year since Trish survived the massacre and she's now in an insane asylum. One day a sleazy director comes to her saying that he's making a movie about her story and he wants her to be the creative consultant. She agrees and they head off to the woods to shoot the film, only to find out that last year's events are repeating themselves. This film was also shot on video. The only distinction between Camp Blood 1&2 is that in part 2 the actors are even worse.

Camp Blood 3: Within The Woods (2005) Some rich TV producer decides to shoot a reality show in the same spot that the infamous murders took place several years ago. The contestants show up and so does the killer clown. This time they shot on film, so it looks a little better than the previous two, but it's arguably even worse. The acting and dialogue is horrible and there are loads of continuity issues. Oh, and there's some insanely ugly woman taking her clothes off too.

They're all really awful, the first one being the best of the three. The gore is pretty decent, proving anyone can do convincing looking make-up FX as long as they study the early work of Tom Savini long enough. These movies are best enjoyed with a bowl of popcorn and a bunch of your friends ready to rip them apart.

Also recommended for anyone who enjoys the Camp Blood Trilogy: The Dead Next Door, Redneck Zombies, & Beware! Children At Play.

4 out of 5 stars Clowns in the B horror genre? Say it isn't so!.......2006-08-30

This is one of those superbee campy slasher films. You can see the dollar signs go up though on the budget in subsequent films. The third one has at least one attractive person in it that looks like they may be a real actor. The 3rd would appeal to most audiences, but you have to be a true fan to really enjoy the first two. My suggestion is to get some friends together, fill up the ice cooler with some adult beverages and NEVER shush anyone that comments during these movies, their comments are the best part!

2 out of 5 stars THEY TRICKED US HARDCORE VAMPIRE FANS.......2007-02-03

First of all, if these were to have been new movies. It would of been cool. Just so you don't get tricked, if you don't know, these movies (except the one with the actress (duff, a prior full moon actress) were just exerpts from the subscies movies and vampire journals, which was also a full moon production. So, with anticipation I purchased it, and I was totally let down by it. But, if you don't have the full moon compilacion of subspecies and the other story where (Duff, produced and co wrote) its a fair triology to watch. The advantage of having the full series of subspecies, is that it tells the whole story. As well as the other one in it. These are literally watered down short versions.....

2 out of 5 stars Trilogy not thrilled.......2007-01-25

All of these shorts star Denise Duff, and feature actors from the Bloodstone/Vampire Journals films.

Unfortunately the connection is even closer. The last of these films "Undead Evil" is in fact a heavily edited version of "Vampire Journals" - they've shortened it to make it a 'new' feature.

Judging by this, I would guess that the first film "Spawn of Hell" is also one - I haven't seen all the "Bloodstone" films, though.

So, if you've seen the Bloodstone films, there's no point buying these 'new' films.

A crazed caterer who secretly worships an Egyptian goddess named Ishtar, he goes around the city seeking fresh young virgin girls then murders them especially hacks them to pieces so he can use their parts to appease his goddess. The police seemed baffled and disgusted by these strange and vile murders for they investigate, a mother is planning on having a party as she invites the caterer over as he has some plans in his twisted mind to appease Ishtar.

This movie went on to become the first ever gore flick to hit the screen, there'd been nothing like it before in cinema at the time. But when this movie hit theaters in july of 1962, audiences were appalled and disgusted by this flick for it made a fortune and gained infamy thus creating a landmark horror flick for being the first gore flick. The acting is kind of bad especially the script writing but there's some good if a little dated gore effects here in this movie like the gross tounge ripping scene, though it may be kind of laughable by today's standards this movie will remain an important flick in the genre for starting gore flicks and made H.G. Lewis a household name.

This special Edition DVD has decent picture and sound with extras like commentary from the director, trailer, a short and poster-and-still gallery.

1 out of 5 stars You Idiots! .......2006-02-12

This is so terribly disgusting. Nobody needs to watch this gory movie. Why are audiences so entertained by watching a deranged maniac slicing up women. This movie was definetely made for a bunch of braindead mysoginists who find this entertaining, and maybe a couple of sex offenders. This along with "Blood Sucking Freaks" should be banned. They should have released a single-disc edition of "Star Wars" instead. Yeah and I'm sure that there are plenty of mysoginists on here ready to be entertained by watching a psycho mutiliating women. And I don't really care how many people do not find this review helpful. I don't even care is 1,000 people don't find this review helpful or even a million. If you are a fan of this movie you will definetely hate my guts. But if you are willing to get something else, then maybe you should buy something else. And pardon me for being narrow-minded but I fail to see why a deranged maniac slicing up women is so "fun."

5 out of 5 stars A big "salute" to Herschell Gordon Lewis!.......2005-10-30

Are or Is "Underground" and/or "old school" horror your "cup-of-tea?" Then check out Blood Feast! Just for record, in my opinion, you'll see where a lot of death metal bands get their inspiration from!

    5 out of 5 stars bloody fun.......2005-05-30

in the year 1963 this movie came out. The excellent film is definetly remake quality. One of the films I want to do someday. Give it two severed thumbs up. Haha.

3 out of 5 stars Horror fans have to see this, naturally.......2005-05-06

This is one of those few movies where everything that everyone says about it is precisely true: Utterly barebones production, flatly pathetic acting, stilted and pointless dialogue, and lots and lots of ultra-phony gore. Of course, this is pretty undisputedly the first real gore film, so horror fans pretty much have to see this. And, even if it weren't so important historically it would be worth seeing anyway, cause it's pretty damn cool either way.

Fortunately, in making the first gore film they didn't go halfway. Sure, there are tons of films which are gorier then it now, it's still gory enough that if it were redone, shot for shot with realistic, modern effects, it wouldn't be allowed an R rating in a million years. You got flaying, leg severing, heart extracting, tongue ripping, brain, um, snatching etc. And, while the gore effects are incredibly dated, they aren't quite as cheap and old as I would have imagined. The blood itself actually holds up fairly well, and looks better than much of the stage blood you'd see over the next 20 years or so. It's actually red! It is also delightfully shameless, perpetually leering at the simplistic effects in a way that makes Fulci look almost reserved by comparison. For example, fairly late in the film there is a 42 second pan over a flaying victim. (i.e. someone just covered with fake blood) 42 seconds may not sound that long when I just say it, but when you're actually watching it it's pretty damn funny, and seems to go on forever. It's also got some odd quirks, such as how virtually all the violence is performed in utter silence, with no sound effects, only music. It manages to make these scenes somehow poignant, in spite of the overall laughable nature of the project.

The film only gets 3 stars because much of the terrible acting and dialogue grows somewhat tiresome after a while. There are only a few topics: The cops whine about how they can't catch the mad butcher who is killing women, and stealing their body parts, and the civilains whine about there's a killer out there, and then reflect happily on the party they plan to have that Saturaday. (Turns out that the guy who's catering the party, Fuad Ramses, is the killer, and is gonna feed them the parts he stole. What a coincidence.) The directing is also amusingly flat. The camera hardly ever moves, nor do the actors. They just stand there, statue-stiff, delivering there lines. It's also got a fun soundtrack, with endless thumping tympani and cheesy organs and such. Lotsa people are irritated by it, but I find it quite amusing.

Yeah, you know if you wanna see this or not. So do it.

    Product Description

PLOT SUMMARY: A factory chimney starts to collapse. A young poet in a room sketching a series of faces is shocked when the mouth of one of the faces comes alive. The poet rubs off the mouth on to his hand. After an erotic interlude with the transplanted mouth, the young poet wipes the mouth on to a statue, which then comes to life and forces the poet to walk within a mirror in the room, which leads to the corridor of a mysterious hotel. After witnessing a number of shocking scenes in the hotel, the poet is forced to commit ritual suicide. Crowned in laurel leaves, the now resurrected poet flees the mirror, destroys the statue, and becomes a statue himself. In a courtyard, a group of schoolboys stage a snowball fight. One of the boys is killed with a snowball which has a rock hidden in its center. The poet, now a society cardsharp, plays a game of cards in which he cheats and loses. In disgrace, he again shoots himself in the head. A glittering group of celebrities watch these events, and applaud the suicide. The woman with whom he had been playing tears up the cards, leaves the courtyard, and is finally seen in an improvised coffin, residing in the state of the "mortal tedium of immortality." The factory chimney collapses entirely; the entire film has thus taken place in an instant. 5 out of 5 stars The poetic visual!.......2007-02-10

The lavish style of Cocteau is carved in relief with his first feature, imbued into the great surrealistic mainstream. 1930 marks not only the auspicious debut of this renowned poet, but it will be reminded as the most imaginative decade of the Century in which surrealistic proposals concerns: Bunuel would dazzle the entire world with "An Andalusia dog", "The gold's age" or "The Hurdes" and Einsenstein was in the eve of Viva Mexico and Dizga Vertov with his eye-camera proposed his experiences.

And being the first Op of a genius, there will be food for thought respect the forthcoming projects specially Orpheus and Orpheus' testament

Indispensable in any collection of every hard fan of the cinema and for all those connoisseurs of the cinema.

4 out of 5 stars "A realistic documentary of unreal events!".......2007-01-13

In film, Jean Cocteau found the perfect medium to portray his own personal mythology... Though his involvement in cinema was uneven, spasmodic and largely undertaken during later life, his fantastic images, well-meaning amateurism and continuous self-preoccupation were inspirational to the avant-garde and underground...

By 1930, when Cocteau made his first film, he was already an established poet, novelist, dramatist and artist... "Le Sang d'un poète" (The Blood of a Poet) was a characteristically romantic portrait of the artist structured as a surreal succession of images centered on a private mythology: desiring immortality, the poet, martyr to creativity, must first pass through a mirror into a deathly private dream-world... Financed, like "L'Age d'Or," by the Vicomte de Noailles, its indulgent celebration of artists in general (and, therefore, Cocteau in particular) makes it inferior to Buñuel's film, but its strong, bizarre symbolism is often alarming...

5 out of 5 stars Realistic Dream Worlds.......2006-10-10

"a descent into oneself, a way of using the mechanism of the dream without sleeping, a crooked candle, often mysteriously blown out, carried about in the night of the human body." ~ Jean Cocteau

Blood of a Poet is surprisingly captivating and encourages the viewer to remain completely attentive by capturing surprise in every moment. Who would think a ball of snow would destroy a human life or that a mouth could transfer from a painting onto a hand like a sensual stigmata.

As a man struggles to comprehend his newly found "life-giving" force, he kisses a statue into life and then becomes a voyeur in a world of bizarre occurrences after splashing through a mirror, a scene that made me laugh with surprise. Here, decorative angels climb down off walls, walk across ceilings and housekeepers sigh in frustration.

The violent scenes are more like scenes from a dream and in black-and-white, the effect is rather mild and the suicide seems to be unsuccessful. The idea is more about the artistic look of the black blood than the actual death of the individuals. It is very experimental in nature and more art than death.

Recently while watching a set of music videos directed by Anton Corbijn, I did notice a direct correlation between this movie and a 1984 music video where a hand (complete with faces instead of just lips) follows a woman and people try to step through mirrors. It could have just as easily been inspired by Alice in Wonderland, but I have my sneaking suspicion "Blood of a Poet" has inspired more than a few music videos.

The beginning of this movie seems to stay in your mind for a few days as you consider the meanings and symbolism. Due to the realistic portrayals (sets are all fairly uncomplicated), this is surreal, but in a very down-to-earth way.
