Lonesome Dove began life as a Larry McMurtry screenplay written for the big screen, with John Wayne, James Stewart, and Henry Fonda in mind for the roles of aging Texas Rangers Gus McCrae, Woodrow Call, and Jake Spoon. That too-good-to-be-true project never happened, and McMurtry shelved the story for some years and then revived it as a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The latter was subsequently adapted for the glorious 1989 television miniseries starring Robert Duvall as Gus, one of the most endearing and heroic figures to come out of Old West mythology, Tommy Lee Jones as the equally noble but taciturn Woodrow, and Robert Urich as their fallen comrade, Jake. Set in the late 19th century in a sleepy Texas town, we meet Gus and Woodrow long after they put their days of settling the West behind them. Busy as cattle ranchers yet spiritually idle, the two head out on one last great adventure to set down new stakes in Montana, a journey that is fraught with terrible dangers, reunions with old loves, and unexpected collisions with destiny. An exemplary and moving Western drama with magnificent performances from Duvall and Jones (and great support from Anjelica Huston, Rick Schroder, Danny Glover, and Diane Lane), Lonesome Dove paved the way for three sequels, two of which are in this collection. Streets of Laredo features James Garner this time as Woodrow Call, who is hired by a railroad company to track down a young criminal and comes face to face with his own past. The other is Dead Man's Walk, a powerful prequel in which we meet Gus (David Arquette) and Woodrow (Jonny Lee Miller) as young men and Rangers recruits, facing their first challenges together. The jewel in the crown of this collection is the original film, but the other titles are highly enjoyable and bring a sense of sweeping narrative to the proceedings. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars collection.......2007-05-19

larry mcmurtry's prize winning novel turned into a mini-series. it was for the time the best television since "how the west was won". the tv movies and tv series have only solidified the best work in the western genre ever. "the sacketts" are not to be overlooked. but in todays tv, nothings surpasses the above mentioned. this is a cry out to hollywood please more "open range".

Description

Set in the Texas Republic in the early 1840's, a time in which three cultures - Anglo, Hispanic and Comanche - were in furious conflict over the same harsh land, we are introduced to Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call, the heroes of LONESOME DOVE. Gus (David Arquette) and Call (Johnny Lee Miller) are young Rangers, ripe for adventure, and they get it with the Texas-Santa Fe expedition, and ill-conceived effort on the part of some freebooters and adventurers to capture Santa Fe and annex New Mexico. Led by the land pirate Caleb Cobb (F. Murray Abraham), and guided by the legendary Bigfoot Wallace (Keith Carradine) and his mountain-man friend Shadrach (Harry Dean Stanton), the group fights several engagements with the great Comanche warchief Buffalo Hump (Eric Schweig), is whittled down by the silent Apache, Gomez (Victor Aaron), and is captured without resistance by the Mexican army. Marched south by a resolute Mexican officer, Captain Salazar (Edward James Olmos), they survive bear attacks, ice storms, and the rigors of the barren desert known as the Jornada del Muerto. In the end, they arrive at the leper colony of San Lazaro, where black and white beans are drawn to determine which of the invaders will live an which will die. Accompanying the men on this trek is the colorful, amply fleshed whore known as the Great Western - Matilda Jane Roberts (Patricia Childress). In Austin, Gus meets the love of his life, Clara Forsythe (Jennifer Garner), and in San Lazaro, they encounter the great English lady, Lucinda Carey (Haviland Morris), who, in the startling climax, helps them survive a last encounter with the wild men, led by the great Comanche, Buffalo Hump.

2 out of 5 stars bad movie from a bad prequel of 'lonesome dove'.......2007-04-07

this is a ridiculous overkill of two fascinating characters in the 'lonesome dove'. the whole 2 dvds were just a bunch of idiots kept blabbering, small talking, yammering, blah, blah, blah from the first second to the last minute, just like mcmurty's novels, all the characters were just kept talking, talking, talking in meaningless small talks, almost talked your ears off. it's so controversial and contradictory to those two characters first appeared in 'lonesome dove', gus talked and talked, but call never talked like what was protrayed in this pathetic 'dead man's walk' and the 'comanchi moon', the more logic one is the real sequel, 'the street of loredo', at least gus was dead, and call remained not just silent but more quiet. by watching this horrible movie adaptation from the original book, scripted by the author, the whole movie was doomed to be horrible. because mcmurty simply couldn't omitted those yammering spread all over his original novel, page after page, blah, blah, blah, and we have to find the storyline among those conversations, dialogs, and dug them out of those garbage-like paragraphs. watching this movie was no different. those idiotic morons never kept their mouths shut. blabbering day and night, even during the comanchi attacks. what call showed in this movie and the novel could never developed into a character like what he had become in 'lonesome dove'. because from the very beginning, everybody just quacked and quacked like a school of chickens. drive me nuts. how come these two young characters portrayed in this blabbering novel would and could have developed into the profound older characters in the 'lonesome dove'? once a moron, a coward, an idiot, always would be a one, no matter how old you have become. adding experiences and sophistication in the aging process never happened to a moron, coward or an idiot. how could these two jokes would have survived in that harsh environment is simply beyond me. at least the 'lonesome dove' movie adaptation was close to what the novel read like. and 'the street of loredo' movie was also an adaptations from the novel.

5 out of 5 stars this is a "walk" worth taking.......2006-05-25

dead man's walk is a preqeal to lonesome dove and alows us to meet gus and call as young men. once again we are sent into adventure with these two friends. while i will say that this isn't as good as the first,it is still lightyears ahead on "return ot lonesome dove",and if you like that or just a good western this is one to have.

4 out of 5 stars Old Western.......2006-03-14

My husband had been looking for this DVD for quite some time. He was happy when I found it at such a low price.

4 out of 5 stars A great western with a great cast!.......2006-02-16

I really enjoyed this movie. I really enjoyed the unique plot and the wide ranging cast from everyone to F. Murray Abraham, Johnny Lee Miller, David Arqutte, Jennifer Garner Etc. I orginally watched this movie because I am a big fan of F. Murray Abraham, I really enjoyed him in the role of the villian. This is also the first movie I really ever saw Jennifer Garner in, so it is fun to see her young as well. I really liked Miller and Arqutte's portrayal of the two main characters, I thought it was very well done.

The only complaint I have about this movie is that it is pretty violent, and many of the minorarty characters ( native Americans and Mexicans) are not portrayed with respect. Maybe this was because who the main characters were and thier association with peoples of these cultures...I don't know.

Anyway, if you are looking for a good western, try this one!

5 out of 5 stars would have made a great weekly series.......2005-08-19

Dead Man's Walk is yet another great Lonesome Dove DVD. It's too bad they didn't make a regular series about the adventures of young Gus and Woodrow. It's not too late. Give us a TV series somebody!

Description

Nosferatu - This ground-breaking film is F.M. Murnau's unauthorized production of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with enough changes to make it legal in its day. Count Orlok's (Max Schreck) move to Bremen brings a plague traceable to his dealings with the realtor Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim). The Count's obsession with Hutter's wife, Ellen, may be the only way to end the evil of Count Orlock's vampire plague.

Dead Men Walk - When Doctor Lloyd Clayton's (George Zucco) twin brother Elwyn dies, Elwyn's hunchbacked assistant Zolarr (Dwight Frye) accuses Lloyd of murder. The good doctor claims self-defense. Neither Zolarr nor Elwyn (also George Zucco) feel this way, and when the diabolical magician returns from the grave as a vampire he and Zolarr plot vengeance. The two begin to kill all of Lloyd's associates...pinning the murders on him.

Chain of Souls - Karla (Stephanie Kane) decides to risk everything to get out of her small Texas town and heads to Hollywood for a shot at fame and fortune. She pursues an interview for a supposedly hot new director...a director who leads a secret life as a psychic vampire. When she doesn't hear from Karla, her older sister Angela comes to Hollywood to look for her. Hooking up with Joan, the two soon discover a dark underworld of cultists bent on human sacrifice.

2 out of 5 stars Good Budget Buy???.......2006-10-18

The First Movie Nosferatu is considered a classic German silent movie. However, this Americanized version changes the original title cards to the names used in Dracula. (Which this movie was based on.) This I could deal with for the price. The bigger problem is the writing runs right off the screen at times so you have to guess at what is being said.
The next movie is in black & white. It is a low budget vampire movie from the forties. The movie centers around a doctor and his evil twin brother. The story was fairly entertaining and looked fine to me. I found this to be the best of the three movies.
The final movie Chain of Souls is newer and is in color. The basic concept is Kyla goes to Hollywood looking to become an Actress. At an audition she discovers something sinister. Although that sounds like it could be good, it's really not. I was bored by this movie.
So is this a good budget buy? As is, probably not. If they fixed the title cards to Nosferatu it would be.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific Double Dose of Creepy Horror From Poverty Row's "Producer's Releasing Corporation".......2006-04-08

What a joy it is to finally come across these two formally hard to find releases from the infamous "Producer's Releasing Corporation", or "PRC", as it was commonly known during it's heyday in the 1940's. Famed for being the lowest of low of poverty row studios in Hollywood, PRC was considered even a step down from the equally infamous Monogram Studios, and was regarded as basically the end of the line for any actors forced to work for them. I am a big fan of their horror efforts however and in actual fact they produced some interesting low budget horror efforts starring such horror veterans as Bela Lugosi and George Zucco, in among their speciality which was "B" westerns. Here we have two very creepy efforts in "Dead Men Walk", and "The Monster Maker", that make for a most entertaining chilling double and were originally designed to take war time audiences minds off the horrors occuring all over the world. Both films have good casts for such "B", efforts and star the likes of horror stalwarts George Zucco (a PRC regular in among his "A" efforts at the major studios like MGM), who in "Dead Men Walk", plays very different twin brothers, and Dwight Frye, forever known from his role in the original version of "Dracula". While certainly produced on low budgets and shot in record time by veteran "fast", director Sam Newfield, both efforts are well worth checking out with the makeup in "The Monster Maker", being of an especially high quality for such an effort as this.

"Dead Men Walk", (1943),is a vampire story, a subject not usually tackled by PRC however don't expect a typical vampire character as horror lovers have all grown used to in the Hammer Studio efforts. Shot in an amazing six days here George Zucco plays very opposite twins; Dr Lloyd Clayton a kindly small town doctor, and his unbalanced brother Dr. Elwyn Clayont who lost his mind while delving into occult research during a stay in India. The story opens at Elwyn's funeral where it is revealed that Lloyd was forced to kill his insane brother in self defence. All does not run smoothly after the funeral however when Lloyd is clearing out Elwyn's possessions when he is cursed by Elwyn's unbalanced hunchbacked assistant Zolarr (Dwigth Frye), who states that his master will take revenge on Lloyd and his niece Gayle (Mary Carlisle) from beyond the grave. Very soon a strange murder takes place in the area where a woman is completely drained of blood and Lloyd soon gets the fright of his life when his supposedly dead brother appears to him very much alive and threatening him. Zolarr in fact has stolen Elwyn's body from the crypt and he has been revived as a vampire who is now determined to reek vengenance on Lloyd and his family no matter what it takes. Very soon Gayle begins to fall ill from what looks like anemia and it is revealed that Elwyn is preying on her, slowly draining her of blood. Despite Lloyd's best efforts to stop Elwyn's attacks he has a hard time stopping his deranged brother or gettign anyone to believe him uncluding Gayle's fiancee David (Nedrick Young), who begins to suspect Lloyd of the murders. When local busybody Kate (Fern Emmet),learns too much of Elwyn's activities and is also found murdered the local townspeople take the law into their own hands believing that Lloyd is responsible for all the deaths and must be stopped. Lloyd however convinces David of his innocence and of his brother's sinister plan and with his help Lloyd finally tracks down the location of Elwyn's body at Zolarr's house. In a final fiery confrontation both men fight to the death in the flames of the burning building ending the story with another funeral, this time it being Lloyd's.

"The Monster Maker", (1944), is a surprisingly nasty little effort and outlines the story of a decidely unbalanced scientist (J. Carrol Naish), who steals another scientist's research into the baffling disease of acromegaly, murders him, and then assumes his identity as Dr. Igor Markoff. One night at a piano recital he sees beautiful Patricia Lawrence (Wand Mckay), in the audience who is the daughter of renowned pianist Anthony Lawrence (Ralph Morgan). Struck by her resemblance to his late wife Dr. Markoff begins to pursue her despite th efact that she is engaged to Bob Blake (Terry frost). When Anthony visits Dr. Markoff to warn him to stay away from his daughter a fight breaks out and Anthony is knocked unconsious. While he is out the deranged Markoff injects him with the acromegaly virus and very soon Anthony is displaying all the symptons of the disease such as rapidly swelling limbs. Consulting his doctor he is referred to the supposed "expert", in the field Dr.Markoff who not only straps Anthony to a table not allowing him to leave but uses blackmail to force Anthony to give him his daughter in return for saving his life from the disease now turning him into a grotesque monster. With the help of Markoff's spurned assistant Maxine (Tala Birell), who against her better judgement actually loved Markoff, Patricia and Bob come to Anthony's rescue who then breaks loose and in the fight with Markoff kills the mad scientist. Maxine is aware of Markoff's cure for acromegaly and then assists in injecting Patricia's father with the vaccine that is the cures which gradually restores him to his former self. At the conclusion we see Patricia, Bob, and Maxine attending Anthony's first concert after the restoration of his health.

Certainly the storylines for these two PRC efforts could be called loopy and inconsistent however they both make for very enjoyable viewing. Aside from the extremely nasty element present as the basic premise of 'The Monster Maker", that film's production values are surprisingly good with the makeup for Ralph Morgan's transformation courtesy of Maurice Seide, who's wizardry was responsible for transforming Orson Welles into an old man in "Citizen Kane", and for the outstanding makeup transformations achieved in such efforts as "I Walked with a Zombie", and "First Yank into Tokyo". As with all "B" or "C" efforts such as these there are numerous continuity errors in the stories, and unexplained loose ends to the story but they are actually fun to look for such as when George Zucco's eye glasses in "Dead Men Walk", disappear and then reappear again in the one scene or where in the film's fiery climatic scene suddenly a whole group of villagers appear near the open window looking in at George Zucco fighting with his brother that weren't there in the last angle shot.

Hollywood's "Poverty Row", studios are most certainly a thing of the past but their product with time has developed a real cult following among "B" movie enthusiasts. This particular double is one I'm very fond of and is well worth exploring. It constantly amazes me that such enjoyable results, whatever their debatable artistic merits, were often achieved with mere six or seven day shooting schedules. It says alot for talented actors such as George Zucco that no matter how absurd the material he had to work with he always manged to pull off good performances even under such rushed conditions as he does here which still manage to intrigue viewers to this day. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Chilling Fun!.......2002-01-06

Fun movies, well presented.

4 out of 5 stars DEAD MEN WALK and THE MONSTER MAKER make a fun time!.......2000-12-19

Roan Archival presents perhaps one of its most entertaining, if not distateful, volumes of "Horror Classics" devoted to preserving the "Poverty Row" pictures of Monogram and PRC. THE MONSTER MAKER is a particularly enjoyable (if not tasteful) hour of sick fun. J. Carrol Naish is superb as Dr. Markoff, a specialist in an elepantitis-like disease. Markoff uses his knowledge to gain control of his foes. In this particular story, he desires the hand of the daughter of brilliant pianist Frank Morgan. When Morgan refuses, he is injected with a virus that turns him into a deformed mess. When Naish discovers a cure, he uses it as a bargaining tool in a very sick and twisted way. This particular films is full of "mad scientist" cliches, yet I couldn't help but be utterly enthralled, especially by the higher-grade casting. As for the techincal side of this film, the print is a better than average one in quality. For the most part, THE MONSTER MAKER looks and sounds beautiful. But like most Poverty Row flicks, it is met with scrathes, speckled and at least one minor film jump. These are not distracting, however. The other side of the disc contains the campy DEAD MEN WALK with menacing George Zucco and the brilliant Dwight Frye (1931 DRACULA). What we have here is basically DRACULA told for the umpteenth time. The similarities in plot and in characters are oh so obvious. What saves this film are superb performances by Zucco as twins (one, if you haven't guessed, is cursed with VAMPIRISM!)and by Dwight Frye in one of his final roles. As for the technical side of this film, you get about the same quality as MONSTER MAKER print wise. DEAD MEN WALK seems to be more frequented by scracthes, splotches and speckles and a couple of film jumps, but overall its not distracting. Both films have attractive menus that are easy to navigate. This is definitely a GREAT value and highly recommended to those interested in this genre

4 out of 5 stars ALPHA DVD VERSION.......2006-10-18

ZUCCO LIVES!!!...AT LEAST AS A VAMPIRE, FOR A FEW DAYS.
THIS IS A TOP-NOTCH PRC HORROR FILM ABOUT TWIN BROTHERS, ONE GOOD ONE BAD, AND BOTH PLAYED BY GEORGE ZUCCO, WHO HAS, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, ALWAYS ADDED A TOUCH OF CLASS & SOPHISTICATION TO ABYSMAL POVERTY ROW DREK. IN DEAD MEN WALK ZUCCO PLAYS ELWYN CLAYTON, A SORTTA LOVECRAFTIAN TYPE WHO READS MYSTIC BOOKS OF FORBIDDEN LORE AND BECOMES A VAMPIRE AFTER HIS DEATH. ZUCCO IS ALSO DR. LLOYD CLAYTON, RESPONSIBLE FOR ELWLN'S DEATH & NOW HAS TO PAY FOR IT. DWIGHT FRYE SHINES AS ELWYN'S EVIL ASSISTANT & AL "FUZZY" ST.JOHN EVEN POPS IN AS A LOCAL RUBE. HAL PRICE PLAYS THE LOCAL LAW AS HE DID IN LUGOSI'S THE DEVIL BAT...CERTAINLY A FUN TIME FOR FANS OF LOW BUDGET 1940'S HORROR FILMS!!! YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.
THE ALPHA DVD VERSION IS PRETTY GOOD, A NICE CLEAR PICTURE EXCEPT FOR A COUPLE OF OUTSIDE NIGHT SHOTS WHICH ARE A TAD TOO DARK, BUT THAT'S PROBABLY THE FAULT OF PCR'S SHODDY PRODUCTION VALUES. ALL IN ALL A GREAT BUY CONSIDERING THE AFFORDABILITY OF THE ALPHA PRODUCT.

    4 out of 5 stars 1940's Horror B Feature Flick.......2006-08-30

Once upon a time, it was common for movie theaters to have Saturday matinees which consisted of 90 minute programs. Each program would include a cartoon or two, one or two short films, a chapter in a serial and the like. The centerpiece of the program would be a "feature" flick that was only about an hour or so long. These shows were always low budget B movies. One such B movie is the horror flick at hand, 1943's Dead Men Walk.

Dead Men Walk, which is set in the days of the Model T, opens with a funeral for the deceased Dr. Elwyn Clayton who as it turns out was killed by his brother Dr. Lloyd Clayton (both played by George Zucco). Turns out that Elwyn was messing around in black magic and had become a servant of Satan and Lloyd had to kill him to protect the town. Only problem is that unbeknownst to Lloyd, Satan has arranged for Elwyn to become a vampire.

However there is a local lady, Kate (Fern Emmett) who is on to the fact that Elwyn is still afflicting mankind. Most of the townsfolk think that Kate is kind of crazy, but Lloyd knows that she is knowledgeable about the dark forces. Lloyd also knows that Kate is the only other person in town who was aware of Elwyn's evility and of the fact that Lloyd was responsible for Elwyn's death. He respects Kate and for that reason comes on guard for the return of Elwyn now that Elwyn's corpse has been formally buried.

Meanwhile, Elwyn is not wasting any time since his burial and his subsequent becoming a vampire. He arranges for his servant in evility, Zolarr (Dwight Frye) to move his remains so that nobody gets any fancy ideas about destroying his corpse and hence end his existence in the world of neither the living or the dead. Additionally, Elwyn hatches a scheme where he will prevent Lloyd's daughter Gayle from getting married to her beloved Dr. David Bently (Nedrick Young).

Elwyn begins a series of nightly visits to the sleeping Gayle as if once is not enough and bites her in the neck each time in the same precise spot. He also visits his brother Lloyd who responds by attempting to shoot Elwyn with a gun even though Lloyd surely would have known that vampires cannot be killed by gunfire. For some strange reason, Elwyn does not even so much as attempt to bite Lloyd.

On one day, Kate discovers where Zolarr has hidden Elwyn's corpse and opens it so that sunlight strikes it. Now, according to vampire lore, the sunlight is supposed to turn the body to dust thus killing Elwyn, but all the sunlight does is strike Elwyn's corpse just as it would any old corpse. Shortly thereafter, Zolarr catches sight of Kate and kills her offstage. When her corpse is discovered, the frightened local folk form a vigilante group and go off on a rampage. All this sets the stage for an interesting ending.

Dead Men Walk is a hard flick to grade. On the one hand, the acting of George Zucco as Lloyd, Fern Emmett and Dwight Frye is well above the call of duty. On the other hand, George Zucco as the evil Elwyn, Mary Carlisle and Nedrick Young is of low grade. Zucco makes for a particularly unfrightening vampire. The scenes of the misty graveyard and shadowy nights are genuinely spooky, but the film's ignorance of Vampire lore is inexplicable.

3 out of 5 stars They Don't Make 'em Like This Anymore.......2006-06-12

This is worth watching as a great example of a B horror flick from the Forties.

The star, George Zucco, is NOT what we now expect in a leading man. He looks like a banker, not a vampire. (Now that I think about it... maybe that look is more appropriate than I initially thought.)

It's not a great movie, but it's not that bad. It's pretty slow moving. The guy who is the love interest of the heroine looks like a missing Marx brother.

Best of all is Dwight Frye, who steals the show as a Renfield-esque sycophant to the vampire.

One side note: there are no bonuses on the dvd. There are probably no easy bonuses to add (interviews with long-dead stars are probably out of the question). Still, I'd like to see Alpha Video include SOMETHING.

4 out of 5 stars Zucco shines in this refreshingly different kind of vampire film.......2006-01-20

I'm a big George Zucco fan. Zucco brought class and a unique presence to many a B movie of the 1930s and 1940s, and Dead Men Walk actually gives you two George Zuccos for the price of one. Yes, Zucco stars in a dual role as the kindly Dr. Lloyd Clayton and his evil brother Elwyn. Some accuse Zucco of being too theatrical, but I think his performance is basically that of a consummate stage actor who just happens to be working in film. His manner and aristocratic voice inspire confidence in the viewer - even when he is talking about a subject such as vampires. Speaking of vampires - and, yes this is a vampire film - Dead Men Walk takes an unusual approach to the subject, one hearkening back to the days of old rather than transplanting a Count Dracula clone into the story.

Elwyn Clayton is dead, and no one seems too upset about his passing, including his identical twin brother Lloyd. By all accounts, Elwyn was a malevolent man who became as a man possessed after devoting himself to the study of the dark arts. One old lady enters the church and pretty much calls him out during his own funeral. Lloyd, for his part, hurries to burn his brother's papers and thus put an absolute end to his evil existence. Imagine his surprise when his brother suddenly appears to him in his study soon thereafter, filling the audience in on how he really died and promising Lloyd all sorts of torment from this point on. It seems Elwyn has learned how to conquer death; he has, in essence, become a vampire.

Lloyd's niece Gayle (Mary Carlisle) soon begins suffering a mysterious ailment that leaves her weaker by the day, and Lloyd eventually begins to think his mind wasn't playing tricks on him after all when his brother appeared to him - Elwyn, as impossible as it seems, actually is alive (or at least not dead). Naturally, Lloyd initially keeps this information to himself, fearing no one will believe him. His niece's fiancé, David (Nedrick Young), actually comes to suspect Lloyd of secretly trying to kill Gayle, the townspeople start itching for some good old-fashioned pitchfork-wielding mob activity, and Lloyd is at his wit's end - while Elwyn is having a grand old time drinking blood and taunting his brother. Lloyd's only hope is to find Elwyn's coffin and destroy him once and for all.

We don't get to see any blood in this film, but the special effects are quite impressive for a low-budget, mid-40s release. It's also something of a treat to see Dwight Frye (forever known as Dracula's wild-eyed helper, Renfield) in one of his final roles (he died several months after completing this film). Zucco really carries the movie, though, as the other players (excepting Frye, of course) are really quite anemic when it comes to charisma. Zucco excels in his portrayal of Lloyd, but he also makes for a quietly menacing Elwyn, a vampire character who is undeniably evil but cut from a very different cloth than Legosi's Dracula. I think Dead Men Walk is really an impressive little film. It only runs sixty-two minutes, but it's definitely worth seeking out (thus proving that PRC - the much-maligned studio behind many a low-budget stinker - didn't always stand for "Pretty Rotten Crap").

    4 out of 5 stars Possibly PRC's Best Film.......2005-04-12

George Zucco gets what may be his best "poverty row" horror role as a doctor who must contend with his nasty vampire brother who is out to torment him. Dwight "Renfield" Frye is along for the ride as the evil brother's assistant and adds to the creepy mood of the piece. Some of the other actors are pretty bland, but George and Dwight keeps things moving. There is some very creepy and effective photography in this film which is surprising for such a low budget. All in all, this is not as bad as some "critics" claim and actually one of the better "poverty row" horror flicks of the 40's. Recommended.

Stars a hammy George Zucco in a dual role as the Clayton Twins - both doctors, one good, one evil. Elwyn Clayton, a practitioner of the black arts, is murdered by his brother Lloyd and returns from the dead as a vampire to seek revenge with the aid of his assistant (Dwight Frye).

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nice Twist on "Dracula" Tale.......2005-03-25

George Zucco has become almost as entertaining for me to watch as Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and Bela Lugosi. He was a British Born, stage-trained actor who could ham it up if need be, like Price, or tone it down to play subdued, clever, sympathetic characters. He played quite a few mad scientists and super villians, but also complex, almost Bogart-style anti-heroes, in such films as "Fog Island" and "The Black Raven". In this low budget vampire tale he gets a chance to play the range from darkest evil to saintly savior.

In duel roles, Zucco plays both the kindly, almost saintly Doctor Clayton, who's brother (also Zucco), has died and we find at the very start of the film that he was a dispicable human being who played with witchcraft and satanic rituals. After dying, he is resurrected as a vampire, due to his allegience to satan, and begins taking revenge on his hated, saintly brother by trying to turn Dr. Clayton's niece into a vampire. The small town the doctor is revered in begins to suspect the good doctor of recent murders, and even his associate, a young doctor who is engaged to Dr. Clayton's victimized niece believes he is insane and covering up murders by claiming his brother is back from the grave. Handling the film elements deftly, Director Sam Newfield gives Zucco the chance to play a very Van Helsing-like character, and you are obviously meant to connect with the original Univeral "Dracula" film. Even Dwight Frye shows up here as the mad survent who protects the Dracula-esqe brother, calling him "Master", as he did Lugosi in the original "Dracula".

The movie is fairly well paced and atmospheric. Zucco is believable in both roles and the rest of the cast does a very good job of supporting him. The movie has a certain Universal Studios feel to it, and a bit of campiness that only adds to the enjoyment. This dvd by DIGIVIEW is a decent transfer. I don't know how it compares to the release by Alpa Video, but most of the movie is fairly sharp and has decent contrast. There are only a few night time scenes that suffer, but even these are better than some of the other low-budget dvds I've seen of George Zucco films, such as "Fog Island". For the low-low price, I would not hesitate to get this little gem of a movie. If you like vampire movies from the golden era of Hollywood, this one stands up nicely.

SH & the SW- Rathbone and Bruce are THE Holmes/Watson pair, and this is among the top 5 Sherlockian outings, although it is a risible addition to a `horror classics' disc.
In this fast-paced, well-assembled programmer, now set in WWII England rather than in Victorian England, our heroes have to contend not only with Moriarty as portrayed by villainous Universal fave Lionel Atwill, and his minions, but also Nazi agents seeking an experimental bombsight which could turn the tide of the war.
The mystery involves a complex code, plenty of captures and escapes, disguises, deduction, and welcome humor without cheapening any of the characters.
Purists may rightly complain that the ending has more in common with serials than with the writings of Doyle, but, hey, it's fun.

IM- This supremely inexpensive attempt to cross Dragnet with Lon Chaney's persona doesn't quite come off. It's more police procedural than horror; Chaney's back-from-the-dead Butcher character could just as easily have been written to be a normal vengeance-seeking ex-con. At any rate, the basic story idea has been around at least since Karloff's 1936 film, The Walking Dead.
IM is fairly routine and plodding (both as `noir' and as `horror'), although there is amusement to be had from the narration, from Chaney, who looks convincingly psychotic and was probably sauced to the gills, and from all the usual things that make these kind of B-movies fun.
Flip a coin as to whether you think the means of Lon's ultimate destruction is fitting or nonsensical.

DMW- Another PRC snoozer, DMW begins with George Zucco having killed his twin brother because he was practicing the black arts. However, the brother returns as a vampire and sets about destroying all that his good twin holds dear. Of course good wins the day, but not without some tragedy. This film was not badly conceived, and Zucco is a likeable pro, but it was badly executed. While not as glacially-slow as some of its other fare, PRC's stubborn unwillingness to spend any cash, or to show the audience anything they hadn't seen a dozen times before, stakes this one right through its mediocre heart.
Pretty Rotten Crap, as the studio's output was known in Hollywood circles of the time, was hurt by always having monsters that just look like people, yet claiming that they were monsters: a slightly hairier Glenn Strange, a kind of pasty Charles Middleton, or in this case, George Zucco dressed in black. Whooo, spoooky! They couldn't even spring for a set of dime store fangs to make him look the part of a bloodsucker. He is one because the script says he is, and because he sometimes fades from view.
Plus, DMW wastes quite a bit of time assuming no one seeing the movie will have ever heard about vampires before, and picks and chooses which rules it will follow.

All told, while I am not a zealous fan of any one of the movies on this disc, they are passable genre fare and the disc is of decent quality considering the low price. Fans of the casts and completists should have no qualms purchasing it.
