Billy Pilgrim (Michael Sacks) has a problem with time: he keeps jumping about in his own life, principally between three key scenes. The "present" is a kind of glowing suburban bliss involving a dutiful wife, large house, and presidency of the local Lions; the "past" is being a prisoner of World War II and experiencing the firebombing of Dresden from the wrong side; the "future" takes place in a glass dome on the planet Tralfamadore, to which Billy has been mysteriously spirited along with the woman of his fantasies (Montana Wildhack, played by Valerie Perrine). It isn't meant to make too much sense, since the point is to represent a man (and a century) that has witnessed things too unbearable for a wholly sane person to make sense of. In fact author Kurt Vonnegut's anguished cry on the insanity of war is one of those completely unfilmable books, so director George Roy Hill gets points even for trying. The whole package is thought provoking in a wholly Vonnegutian way. All this, and Glenn Gould playing Bach as well. --Richard Farr

Slaughterhouse 5 is not unflimable. Nothing is but just because you can doesn't mean you should. The film translation of Vonnegut's masterpiece is nothing special but certainly no embarrassment. Saying a movie is not awful is hardly an endorsement. Leaves alot of the book out, which is understandable. Changes alot of the book and makes basically the same points, which is not understandable. Why not just leave it as is? Competently acted and cleverly directed in an early 70's low budget minimalist sorta way. The book has a certain snap to it that the movie fails to duplicate.

Having heard of his passing this title came up on one of his numerous eulogies. I remebered it like it was yesterday, (it was) as one of my favorites that I only had on a very dusty VHS recording. No longer having a VCR, natural progression dictated an upgrade to Digital media and with it an addition to "my library", not the house library which covers a-z in themes and ideologies. It now joins the other greats I have amassed as a cornerstone piece. I will be adding other classics also but this will continue to be a favorite.
The story is clever and actually touches on several truisims, as we get older we tend to "time Travel" thru our memeries. A touch, a sound, a smell, sets us all on a journey back through our lives, not that we can ammend them as with the main character, but to re-live them through our memories time and time again.
Thanks Kurt, You will be missed,

I had first seen this film back in the early 70's and I ordered it immediately when I saw it was available on DVD.

The magic and the thrill is still here after three decades. Either me or the film did not grow old. Between you and me I grew, the film didn't. Still as fresh and rewarding as ever. Strongly recommended.

Unforgetable.......2007-07-01

I caught part of this tv show soon after arriving in Las Vegas with my family. That was many years ago, but I never forgot it. It was one of the highlights of that vacation. Ever since then I've been wanting to see the entire show, but up until recently, I hadn't come across it. Now I look forward to finally seeing it from the beginning.

Beware the Chicken!.......2007-02-11

This is a great video! I laughed, cried, was disgusted and elated throughout. You will never look at a chicken in the same way after you watch this. But beware, you might think twice before you eat another one.

I saw this last year and couldn't get it out of my head. Not only is it funny, as many of the reviewers here have said, it is also very, very, sad. It tells some wonderful stories about chickens and the last one about the chicken who's chick is attacked by a hawk is quite moving. But, there is a dark side to this as well because it shows very clearly how human beings abuse and use chickens as pure commodoties.

Watch this and you'll never feel the same about chickens again.

And ignore the person who thinks it's mad - it's not mad, it's just that they don't understand.

I saw this a few years back and got the biggest kick out of it! I regret that I didn't buy it at the time because three years later I still tell my friends about the hilarious and unbelievable things I saw in this film. If you are a serious chicken student, you might not get this film, but I never thought twice about chickens til I saw this and I gotta say it makes great conversation, now I can show my friends I wasn't making this stuff up! I'm a serious weird comedy lover, and this just hit the spot. p.s. sorry if this offends all you die hard chicken advocates, but it really is funny!

This isn't a documentary on the "Natural History of the Chicken" anymore than "Trekkies" is a serious anthropological study of fan(atic) behavior. It's mostly just a bunch of people telling anecdotes about their experiences with chickens. Moreover, the way in which the filmmakers present a lot of these folks makes them come across as weirdos and fools, often unfairly (but sometimes not). The film has an uncomfortable, mocking, "exploitation" feel. For PBS, that's surprising. And disappointing.

A wonderful documentary of real life near death experiences and their impact on how we might view life after death. This research all started years ago when medical doctors like Dr.Moody and Dr. Morse started to scientifically question what patients were telling them about their experience of leaving their body during a near death or death happening. Their patients stories are very moving. Phd Fred Wolf's information on quatuum physics and life after death is thought provoking. After seeing this movie I am feeling more comfortable with the subject of life after death and the change called death.

I did not give this five stars because there wasn't much new information. The only new thing I remember is that I didn't know air traffic radar is computer-programmed to hide aircraft traveling at high rates of speed. I found that interesting, but not worth five stars.

If you haven't attended any UFO conferences, or read too many UFO books, but do have an interest in this subject, you will definitely find this interesting. He focuses on what I would call "high-value" sightings - sightings by trained observers - meterologists, airline captains, police officers, etc, who have made official reports, and then he talks about the follow-up research, or lack thereof. It's a good introduction for someone who has a real interest in getting some reputable information.

I thought much, but not all, of the music was appropriate, and added to the strength of the movie, but I found some of it to be too jarring and spikey.

The basic format, two people sitting in a room staring at each other, is intrinsically a difficult format to keep an audience involved, but Nick Pope has a compelling voice of authenticity.

One thing I noticed in the interview is when Pope was asked if he were a disinformation agent - he definitely had a reaction to that question. I also noticed that the film went from black-and-white to color at this point. I wonder if there was a subliminal message in that.

One other point I have to make is that the beginning newspapers were headlines from the early 1950s, which, although relevant to the subject of UFOs, had nothing to do with the work that Nick Pope did. I kept wondering, throughout the movie, when that would be tied in, and it never was.

The Inside Scoop on UFO Research.......2007-04-19

Who better to discuss government research into UFOs than a man who worked for the British Ministry of Defense for 21 years? While being interviewed on this DVD, Nick Pope provides information and insight into a wide variety of areas ranging from quantum physics and psychology to Black Technology and the events in Rendlesham Forest. I found it very informative.

Fascinating insight into the Ministry of Defence with this in-depth interview for the first time of Nick Pope - the British Fox Mulder. Nick candidly provides his unique perspective on the UFO phenomena from within the MOD and how his own attitudes changed once the incredible truths about the various sightings and information came to light. Pope is underated and underused by most television documentaries, but this DVD actually gets to grips with his own thoughts and beliefs and is very cleverly shot and edited with some nice and even funny music. Another great DVD from Reality! Well done guys.

Very enlightening.......2006-07-08

I really liked this documentary. It was very enlightening for me. The first story in the movie did not thrill me all that much. However, the second story is about a near death experience that happened to Eric Estrada, the star of the popular '70's tv show "Chips". I never knew that this had happened to him so it was interesting hearing about it. The last story is the one that really captivated me. It is a story told by a woman who tried to commit suicide. Since I have lost a loved one to suicide, and have also attempted suicide myself, this story really caught my attention. The story she told of what happened to her during this attempt really gave me a different view of what I thought might happen to someone's soul after taking their own life. I did like this movie and do recommend it to anyone who is interested in stories of the afterlife.
