A hot-tempered blue-collar butcher kills just one man, a bullying taxi driver whom surely no one will miss, and by the end of the week winds up with a veritable stockyard of corpses in his tiny home during a Spanish summer heat wave. It all starts when Marco's girlfriend insists he go to the police, and he strangles her to keep her quiet. Soon everyone he cares for is dropping by the increasingly crowded house looking for one victim or another, and Marco, as out of control as a rabid dog, keeps on killing, one cover-up leading to another. The stinking pile of bodies soon has all the neighborhood dogs smacking their lips, until he starts dropping his fetid victims into the slaughterhouse grinder, piece by piece. Though it sounds more like a farce than a humid thriller, it's neither a black comedy nor a gory bloodfest (despite the misleading title, there is no cannibal in this picture). Marco turns from macho hothead to doleful wretch as he numbly executes each successive victim as if it's a tortured chore demanded by mocking gods. Writer-director Eloy de la Iglesia doesn't shirk on the dirty deeds--one unlucky fellow gets a cleaver full on the face--but this is less a spectacle than a woebegone portrait of the spiritual disintegration of an angry antihero. --Sean Axmaker

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know that Dead Man's Chest was filmed simultaneously with some of Pirates 3, so don't expect a complete resolution (think more The Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel a lot longer than it really is.

Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he's still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgård appears as Will's undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards--and he's still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Another great movie to add to your collection.......2007-06-27

This movie had me sitting on the edge of my chair throughout it. Once again, all of the cast plays an outstanding role. The whole object of this movie is to get the keys from Davy Jones to get to Dead Mans Chest. Its an awesome movie. I recomend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Stands alone!.......2007-06-27

FUN! I always look at sequels from at least two angles: as a sequel and as a movie without a predesessor. This movie can easily stand alone.

5 out of 5 stars With a yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum - this show's a lotta fun!.......2007-06-26

I finally sat down and watched this DVD - I have no idea why I waited so long, I'm a Johnny Depp fan and love the way he lives and breaths his characters. He is especially believable as Jack Sparrow - lovable despite his tendency to think predominantly of his own well-being or how to line his pockets.

A good bit of time has passed since the previous movie and the East India Trade company has moved into the area; bringing with it the detestable Lord Beckett, who has Will arrested on his wedding day and drags him to the site - where Elizabeth forlornly sits in the rain, in her wedding dress - in chains. And proceeds to arrest Elizabeth as well. What does he want? He wants Jack Sparrow's compass and he's willing to make a deal to get it - he will send Will out to find Sparrow and get the compass in exchange for a pardon for Sparrow and leniency for Will and Elizabeth.

The movie has amazing special effects - like the first movie, the crew of the antagonistic ship is completely crewed by "monsters," requiring extensive special effects. Personally, I liked the special effects in this movie better - I was fascinated by the constant movement on many of the characters. The kraken was also pretty cool, especially toward the end where you get to see the main body and mouth of the "beastie," as Jack puts it.

This movie does end on a bit of a cliff-hanger, with a bit of a surprise thrown at us right at the end that I certainly didn't see coming. I will definitely be looking forward to watching "At World's End" once it is released to DVD. A recommend from me for anyone who enjoys a good adventure flick, some fun sword fights (love the water-mill scene - shades of a hamster wheel, anyone??) and terrific special effects. Not for the people who prefer to be intellectually challenged or go to "theatres" to see "films" - this is definitely a movie ;-) Get it, watch it, enjoy it!

Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest is not as good as the first but still worth watching. The story is full of holes and slightly hard to follow at times but the acting is still great. I just cannot get enough of Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow as a flamboyant pirate. If you saw the first movie you need to see this one. If you havent seen the first yet, go back and view that one before this movie.

The picture quality and sound quality of this movie are amazing on Blu-Ray! Way better than I had hoped, I show it to anyone who does not know what Blu-Ray is or ask me is there a difference on Blu-Ray!
The Uncompressed audio track is a Hundred times better than Dolby Digital, the movie comes alive!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-07-01

I must say I like the second part better than the first one. The story and characters were amazing. Uncompressed sound is heaven so use a surround sound system! The graphics were pretty good and overall it's a great movie to watch and to collect on Blu ray.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray Heaven.......2007-06-30

The video transfer on this BD is definitely one that would be classed as reference material. I have watched it a few times now with my PS3 set to 1080P feeding my JVC HD1 1080P projector and the picture quality is the bees knees.

Even with my ageing Denon AVR-2802 I can quite clearly hear the quality of the audio. I am expecting to take delivery of the new Onkyo 875 in the next few weeks which I am sure will give me a better idea of how good the audio transfer really is. Suffice to say that with my current equipment I believe the audio transfer is up there with the best available.

Leave it to Dario Argento (Suspiria) to cook up a truly stomach-flipping installment in Showtime's Masters of Horror series. Argento's hour-long Jenifer has an uncluttered through-line that combines a relentlessly destructive film noir plot with zombie attitude. Steven Weber plays a cop who kills a man about to harm a disfigured woman named Jenifer. Weber finds himself strangely protective of the girl, who incidentally has enough sexual appetite to tempt him away from everything sane and holy. Unfortunately, she has other appetites as well, which spells trouble for the odd child (or housecat) who might be taken as a snack. Weber's downward spiral is predictable enough, but there's something in almost every scene that makes you shiver--either overtly (Jenifer chomping down on entrails) or indirectly (the way trees ripple as a car moves into the forest). Jenifer is played by Carrie Anne Fleming, wearing a prosthetic horror mask and flimsy negligee, an unsettling combination of repulsive/sexy that Argento exploits to the maximum. The trim script is by Steven Weber, from a short story by Bruce Jones; the excellent music is by Claudio Simonetti, whose ensemble Goblin did the music for other Argento films and the original Dawn of the Dead. --Robert Horton

Description

Steven Weber of THE SHINING,THE STAND and DESPERATION stars as Frank Spivey, a detective who rescues a strange young girl (Carrie Anne Fleming) with a horribly disfigured face and lusciously ripe body from a deranged killer. But when Spivey takes responsibility for the mentally challenged orphan, she reveals herself to be a creature of untold carnal pleasures and unspeakable violent depravities that may lead him straight to hell. She is seductress, psychopath and succubus all in one…and her name is JENIFER. The legendary Dario Argento directs this jaw-dropper that features a haunting score by Claudio Simonetti of Goblin (DAWN OF THE DEAD,TENEBRE).

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars is it rape if she is mentally disabled.......2007-07-01

I'm sorry, but I don't think that this should be in the genera of horror because it fundamentally consists of a man having sex with a "special" girl. The plot makes little sense and there are no unexpected twists in the movie what so ever, with the exception of a man (who seems to be an upstanding citizen) having sex with a mentally disabled girl. The movie was a waste of my time and should be locked away in a vault to be burned at a later date.

4 out of 5 stars Great body. Shame about the face........2007-05-31

Its been a long time since Dario Argento hit his own personal zenith of horror heights with early classics such as "Suspiria", "Tenebrae", "Deep Red" and "Opera" but luckily for us, this new MASTERS OF HORROR TV series has finally given him a new reason to kick back, cut loose and deliver the dark splattery goods that only Argento can.

Based upon an Eerie comic book by Bruce Jones (illustrated by top artist Berni Wrightson) this dark, sexual horror movie delivers everything that you want from an Argento flick . . . and more. Steven Weber (who has never been better. He scripts as well as stars) plays detective Frank Spivey, who is forced to gundown a man about to harm a disfigured young woman named `Jenifer' (played by Carrie Anne Fleming under a lot of latex appliances). He soon finds himself strangely protective of the girl, who uses her insane sexual prowess to steal Weber away from his wife and son and plunges him into a world of depraved sexuality and murder. Jenifer herself is a marvel. Both childlike and predatory in equal measure - she dominates Weber's world, offering him sex at the drop of a hat and killing just about anything that comes near her (cats, young teens, anything!). The murder sequences are highly erotic and graphic in their imagery, and mark a return to form (for me at least) to what Argento used to do. His fluid and assured use of camera movement combined with Claudio Simonetti's execellent score and the pitch perfect cast add up to one of the best times I have had in a horror movie in quite awhile. It all feels very `vintage Argento' and if you love his late 70s/mid 80s output - this is highly reminiscant of that period - although no `Suspiria' under any terms, it is, for me, the best of his recent offerings. Mixing dark imagery with a lyrical, almost dreamlike cinematography - it evokes an atmosphere unlike any other horror movies that out there at the moment. The only thing that lets it down is the `obvious' ending which coming after all the glorious bloodshed and atmosphere leaves you a little "huh?", but as the preceeding 50 minutes are largely excellent - you can forgive this minor mistep.

The disc is loaded with extras. Like the other MASTERS OF HORROR - you get the usual documentaries, trailers and deleted scenes. Oh yeah, those deleted scenes . . . owch! This new TV series is a real shot in the arm to the genre and you get the impression that the directors involved are having a good time pushing taboos and going back to horror basics. What with this and Miike's `Imprint' - this series is delivering the goods time and time again. Its only my opinion, but I highly recommend this series (if you can get it, go for the UK Anchor Bay boxsets which has all of the first season spread across 2 boxsets at around UK £15/$30 each online. Well worth it). To sum up, I loved this short movie and although wasn't totally enamoured with Argento's follow up `Pelts' - this master of horror surely makes up for lost time and has firmly got me back in the Argento camp. Plus, on a purely empty headed/dumb male standpoint: Jenifer has the hottest body I have ever seen! To be honest, if I was Weber's character - I would have probably done the same. Even if she does have massive fangs and eats entrails . . . what guys will do for a hot chick, huh? But, don't tell the wife.

3 out of 5 stars Divided.......2007-05-31

On one hand, this film is brilliantly shot, the gore scenes are A+, the makeup is fab, the movie refuses to let you look away. On the other hand, the damn thing is so predictable, some parts are preposterous even within its own universe...

Which leaves me taking the easy way out by giving it a vague 3 star rating. Definitly worth watching, as Argento expertly exploits sex and violence in a visually mind searing way, and this one does have some unsettling parts-- some genuine chills. But it was impossible for me to ignore the plot holes and I ended up grunting and slamming my fist down at the end when all winded up exactly as predicted.

Argento took a flawed piece and got something out of it. Horror aficionados should dig this piece, but be warned that it is no Suspiria.

3 out of 5 stars READ MY REVIEW!! (If you haven't seen it yet).......2007-05-19

OK lets get this straight, I like Masters of Horror, but they should really work on their endings! This 1 hr. episode is all about one girl cannibal, and they couldn't even make her die?! She turned a cat into pieces, she killed this little asian girl, she made this guy into pieces too, she even ate some guy's private part! And she still survives after Frank tried to kill her (but failed when some hunter had to shoot him)! Tons of sex, but creepy sex. Jenifer is hot without her nasty make-ups and masks! But Frank didn't even try to get his wife and son back after they left him while Jenifer was eating their cat!

4 out of 5 stars Fan of Horror.......2007-05-15

I'm not educated on the background of this film, the origin, etc. but I am a fan of horror movies. I like this moving alot for the simple reason that it grossed me out. The gross out is an important aspect of horror, not the SINGLE most important aspect of course, but one of them. This film, portions of it were disgusting to watch, which in turn (being a gore fan)made me want to watch it more. The disfigured character Jenifer pursues Frank Spivey (Steven Weber) after she is rescued by him. From there it quickly builds into a bizarre ride filled with lust, cannibalism & animal mutilation. A must for Argento fans, a must for fans of the genre.

The idea of unleashing three of Asia's wildest directors in the same omnibus film is a terrific one, and putting the likes of Miike Takashi and Park Chan-wook to work in the Twilight Zone-style mini-feature is mouth-watering for fans. (Just look at what happened when Miike made an installment of Showtime's Masters of Horror series--it was deemed too crazy for broadcast.) Alas, the results are a letdown. First up, "Dumplings," is from Hong Kong's Fruit Chan, and it's the most cogent (and ickiest) of the bunch. Bai Ling plays a specialist in preparing dumplings that promise to restore youth and health for her customers; the weird part is she also runs a particular clinic on her premises. Ugh. The Korean offering from Park Chan-wook is "Cut," a warp on filmmaking about a self-centered director who gets trapped at his home (or is it the set of his new movie?) by a deranged former extra. The sadistic machinations here make Hannibal Lecter look reasonable, and the segment gets points for weirdness, but Park's take on revenge fantasies is much more exciting in Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. Miike represents Japan with "Box," which really is in the spirit of an old Outer Limits episode, complete with a "gotcha" ending that doesn't seem worth the trouble. Sure, twins are always a good topic for horror, but this segment is a long way to travel for not much. All three segments look good--there's little hint of the grindhouse cheapie here--but overall it's a disappointment. --Robert Horton

3 out of 5 stars 1 was definitely extreme.......2007-06-11

*3 Extremes* is an anthology of 3 Asian directors giving a short film.

The first one was "Dumpling" and I thought this was the most gruesome of them all. Let me forewarn you not to eat, especially Chinese food, while watching this particular short because that is exactly what I did. I had to put down my food until this movie was over.

Anyways, "Dumpling" is about a woman who is known for her dumplings that seem to bring restorative powers of youth. An aging actress has sought out this woman for the dumplings. Over time, she starts to notice that she gets a little younger. Of course, there is a price attached for wanting to become younger.

"Cut" was ok. It was the least favorite of mine. Maybe I overanalyze this one but I felt that the ending ruined the whole point of the movie. Anyways, a movie director is captured and imprisoned in his own set that he was currently filming. On his right is his wife who is "stringed" to a piano. On his left is a bound and gagged girl. The kidnapper is deranged and wants a confession out of the director and wants him to strangle the girl to death. For every 5 minutes that passes and the girl isn't strangled, the wife loses a finger.

This one is sort of like watching "Tales from the Crypt" because something goes awry towards the end.

"Box" was interesting. A woman gets this strange recurring dream and then she gets a visit from her dead sister. Then, you're taken back to the time when the woman and her sisters were little girls. They were acrobatic dancers for a man at a one-tent circus.

One evening, a girl decides to tease her sister by locking her in a box. When that is done, an argument ensues between the girl and the man. During the argument, a fire breaks out and quickly engulfs the box with the trapped sister. The man jumps into the fire but he never makes it back. The girl runs away, never looking back.

Years later, the woman is having dreams about her past. Plus, someone is sending her reminders of the past. If you really pay attention, you can probably figure it out before the ending is revealed.

Overall, I thought this film was alright. Nothing really scary or suspenseful. Just gruesome...with "Dumpling". I was telling a friend of mine about this. He told me there is an extended/completed version of "Dumpling". So, I'm curious to check that out.

3 out of 5 stars Worth it if only for "Dumplings"!.......2007-06-04

Of the three episodes here, my favorite was Dumplings, but I shall breifly review the other two. The first, "Box" is about a young successful writer who is haunted by something she did in her past...it has to do with her twin sister and what happened to her as a result of sibling rivalry. Though the premise is interesting, the story kind of drags and is quite jarring to follow at times with the flashbacks thatdisrupt the flow of the story. The third episode is "Cut", about a director who is held hostage together with his family by an irate movie extra. It is not so much horror as psychological terror and plays out quite well. My favorite of the three however was the middle episode "Dumplings" which has Bai Ling in a wicked role. The story centers around an aging TV personality who is lookking for an elixir of youth to keep her looks and her philandering husband. She goes to Mei [played to the hiltby Bai Ling] to procure Mei's famed dumplings that are known for their restorative powers. Let's just say that Mei uses ingredients that are far from traditional for her dumplings, gag-inducing even and the TV personality finds that she has to pay a very heavy price in order to keep her looks. The story itself is reflective of society's preoccupation with looks, and touches also on otherworldly practicesthat are more common in Eastern culture. All in all, Three is not so much about supernatural horror, but more about human drama and psychological terror, and is a worthy addition to the J-horror genre.

3 out of 5 stars Icky but not that extreme, really.......2007-05-24

You know how it is with anthologies - they're always hit and/or miss, even when you get top directors. This one really has good names. I was wary of this film when I learned two of the three directors were Park Chan-wook and Takashi Miike. I saw their previous movies and they freaked me out. Miike, especially, really traumatised me with "Ichi the Killer". All three mini-movies are beautifully shot and there are hints the directors really are trying to be extreme but trying doesn't mean that they are. It was really surprising that non-horror director, Fruit Chan, is the one who comes closest. His "Dumplings" - a tale of abortion, cannibalism, dumplings and beauty supplements - is the only one truly worthy of the price of admission. It's uncomfortable, disturbing and macabre, all the more by relying on suggestion and being relatively gore-free. Ironically, Park's and Miike's segments are the weaker ones. Park's entry, "Cut" is silly psychobabble nonsense while Miike's "Box" is too bizarre and incoherent to be horrifying. There's a lot of fluids, body parts and mad people but that only makes it icky, not extreme.

5 out of 5 stars Weird fare from the far east.......2007-05-15

Good stuff from 3 fine asian directors. I personally love Park Chan-Wook's effort the most, but Miike's film rocked as well.

5 out of 5 stars Three Original And Frightening Tales Make This One Of The Best Horror Anthologies.......2007-05-07

"Three Extremes" is a 126-minute tour-de-force of horror, intensity, and striking visual imagery, composed of three mid-length tales from Asia. Each segment hails from a different country, a theme that's becoming a bit of a trend in Asian anthologies and that I wouldn't mind seeing continue, possibly expanding in the future to offer more anthology segments originating from the more 'undiscovered' (in terms of their movies making it to an international audience) countries like The Phillipines and Malaysia.

The first tale, the Hong Kong Extreme entitled "Dumplings", is about a woman who prepares 'special' little pastries with seemingly miraculous health benefits, and the secret ingredient that gives them their potency. Included in an alternate, much longer form on the second disc in the package, the gruesome "Dumplings" creeps across some of the most disconcerting territory imaginable. The nature of the dumplings's unique ingredient is revealed early in the tale and with virtualy no buildup, and could have been even more shocking if the segment had been structured so as to bring out the revelation closer to its conclusion. As it is though, it guarantees a constant state of very unsettling discomfort throughout, and allows the piece to act as a kind of social commentary.

The Korean Extreme - "Cut" (also known as "Peach") is in more traditional horror thriller territory, but taken to more of an extreme (no pun intended) and put together with tremendous flair. It's about a movie director and his wife taken captive in their own home by a psychopath, and it excels in both psychological and visual aspects. It does more with sights and cinematography than you'd think a piece taking place almost entirely in a large apartment could. The wire trap has a strangely beautiful symmetry whose asethic effect is strikingly at odds with its purpose. Unpredictable from the start, "Cut" gets Very strange at the end, with a weirdly cryptic last few minutes.

The Japanese Extreme, "Box", is a major mystery, and for most of its length you don't know what exactly is going on, except that it deals with an emotionally troubled woman and memories of a very sinister box. To say too much of what it's about would kind of be a disservice, because it's better to let it unfold and reveal its subject matter in its own time. Perhaps the most outstandingly produced of the three segments - which is saying something - "Box" is haunting in every way. For much of the segment it's almost a silent piece, with only occasional, subtle sounds. The use of color in the outdoors winter scenes is extraordinary, giving "Box" a wonderfully ghostly feel. This tale is directed by Miike Takashi, and at times its overall style is reminiscent of his brilliant and legendary "Audition".

Taken together the combination of the three tales gives an unusually intense and rather intimidating experience. An excellent whole.

A high-school kid could make up a better story. Watch out for the Liger! Part Lion part Tiger

3 out of 5 stars Hard to Remember.......2007-02-20

Anytime a movie doesn't stick in your head, you know it could have been better. That being said, anytime you don't forget a movie, you know it can't be that bad.

Applying the above principle has led me to give "Ice Cream Man" 3 stars.

I'll never forget how well Clint Howard distorted my memories of long-forgotten ice cream men I encountered growing up. Most of them (I think) were pretty cool guys working a part-time summer job. But after seeing this movie, I can DEFINITELY imagine that some of them could have been hiding lots of secrets (like dead people and stuff).

Anyways, I kept hoping that they would make a joke out of the popsicle commonly known as the "Firecracker". If I had written the movie, I would have given someone a Firecracker that REALLY WAS a firecracker! Get it? Just think: one lick and KABOOM! Ha! I don't recall if the "Ice Cream Man" killed people or anything, but it appears to be a horror film.

Or a sulfuric "Chaco Taco" (that's an ice cream treat)! Talk about hot sauce!

This movie definitely gets the creative juices flowing. Inspiring and nostalgic - a DEADLY combination (get it?).

Please gift this movie to me.

"Ice Cream Man" is not scary...it's not funny...it's just plain STUPID. You know, I don't have a problem with an ice cream man that turns into a homicidal maniac...that's not a bad idea. But, they made a joke of this movie. The acting is horrible and the movie sucked to no end.

5 out of 5 stars Should Have Had 31 Sequels.......2006-06-27

The 90s started giving us horror villains that were more on the campy and silly side. It must have started with Leprechaun, then quickly the whole subgenre went direct to video and remains there to this day. Even now when you go to your local video store you're likely to see titles like Santa's Slay and The Gingerdead Man on the wall along with Nanny Mcphee and Fun With Dick and Jane. These films may have the horror film structure, but basically they're comedies made for horror film fans. Ice Cream Man came out in the mid 90s and didn't seem to find much of a cult audience though it's got cult film written all over it. I'm not sure why it didn't make a bigger splash. I mean, there is an audience for this stuff, they didn't make five sequels to Leprechaun because no one was watching. Ice Cream Man is a real gem. It has the immortal Clint Howard as a psychotic ice cream man driving a truck full of corpses, body parts and bugs. He's obsessed with the idea of an ice cream man bringing happiness to children, yet he wants to kill the children. Of course it's the kids who stumble onto his real intentions, and naturally the adults don't believe them. An interesting cast is assembled for this film. Alot of actors that will be recongnized by horror fans. Their roles are actually quite throwaway(like David Warner's), and usually below the talent of the actor playing it, but it's still cool to see them in it anyway. Clint Howard is the real star of the film however. His mannerisms, his gravelly voice and his cornball lines are enough to have you rolling. I mean, no one would ever buy ice cream from a guy who acted this way. If a closeup of a cop chewing an eyeball(that's been cleverly inserted into his cone) doesn't have you giggling, then you may as well shut the damn movie off, but lemme tell ya, this is some funny stuff and should have been a bigger hit. The picture quality on this dvd is for crap, but since no one will be in a rush to put out an Ice Cream Man Special Edition, this is what we'll have to deal with.

2 out of 5 stars A video nasty??? :::spoilers ahead:::.......2005-11-05

After having watched a number of movies listed on the original video nasties, I can't help but wonder why a number of those gruesome movies were even put on there. One of those are "Cannibal Man." "Cannibal Man" is a Spanish serial killer flick that has nothing to do with cannibalism and also has very little gore in it. The goriest part of the entire movie (and most interesting) is in the beginning when there is a few scenes from a slaughterhouse of a number of cows being butchered. After that, the rest of the movie is a 90-plus minute borefest in which a man who works in a slaughterhouse and lives in the slums slowly loses his grasp on reality and quickly spirals into a madness from which he cannot escape while all the while trying to pretend that all is normal. Basically, "Cannibal Man" consists of a very simple plot in which the main character accidentally kills a taxi cab driver with a rock while the driver was busy assaulting his girlfriend. Later, he reasonably fears that his girlfriend is going to turn him in to the police so violently strangles her to death. A little later, his brother threatens to turn him into the police so he kills him too, but this time he pounds his sibling's head in with a large monkey wrench. He then kills his brother's unsuspecting fiancee, her father, (the father's death is probably the most interesting throughout the entire movie), then proceeds to kill a nosy older woman after he finishes giving her the "ole in and out." Interspersed between all these scenes is some really disturbing gay erotica between the main character and his homosexual neighbor. Thats pretty much the movie, only it drags on much longer than my concise summary of it. Probably not worth renting, certainly not worth buying, I suggest checking out "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" over this "video nasty" that isn't so nasty after all any day.

1 out of 5 stars I lost 98 min of my life.......2002-10-02

The movie cannibal man is not like it says. First off, he isnt a cannibal at all. As a lover of cannibal films this is far from one. Even the description on the back is misleading. He works at a meat plant where he makes soup, wow how convenient on disposing of bodies. He does kill some people, but the scenes where people die arent that graphic so that wasnt worth my time and my friends who were there with me watching it. What is with his neighbor, the homosexual inuendos were there, and well really upfront and unnecessary. I do not recommend this film to anyone that likes cannibal films, or horror films. It sucked

3 out of 5 stars things that make you go hmmmm.......2001-07-15

I read about Cannibal Man in a recent installment of the Catalogue of Carnage, which compared it to Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer and Polanski's Repulsion. The Henry similarities are superficially there, but this was no masterpiece of psychological disintegration as in the case of the latter. It's kind of about madness and economical oppression but ultimately leaves you kind of wondering what you just watched. Wondering also why it's called Cannibal Man. He doesn't eat anybody! He merely puts parts of his victims bodies into the meat grinder at the soup factory where he works. Not exactly a horror movie, though it did resemble certain stylistic elements of the great Italian films and featured a Rosemary's Baby-derived lullaby that played repeatedly throughout, Cannibal Man tells the tale of a man who is unable to face the reality of his actions and ends up with a body count as a result. There is a fair amount of gore, which apparently got it banned in several countries, but somehow I don't think this would upset anyone seeking out a film called Cannibal Man - the slaughterhouse footage is far more disturbing. The weirdest (and most potentially interesting) element in the mix was Nester, Cannibal Man's would-be gay lover with whom he goes for an intimate swim. It was hardly suggested that Marcos kills because of repressed homosexual desires, so this scene and the tension between the two men just seemed extremely odd. If this theme had been developped, it might not have seemed so misplaced within the context of the rest of the film. Nester was fabulous though and I looked forward to seeing him again after every scene and watching Cannibal Man's expressions in contemplation of this strange new friendship. The dubbing is laughable.

3 out of 5 stars Cannibal Man (1971) d: De La Iglesia, Eloy.......2001-06-04

This film is one of the better-directed movies that made it onto the Video Nasties list. A gloomy and depressing Spanish movie much in the style of Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (1989). The movie tells the story of Marcos, a disturbed young man (Vincente Parra) who has been very desensitized by his job in a local slaughterhouse. He gets tired of butchering cows and starts killing people! One night while out on a date he goes "postal" and kills a cab driver in a heated argument. He later strangles his girlfriend (who witnessed the murder), then kills his brother for trying to convince him to turn himself in. He also cuts his brother's fiancée's throat when she discovers the bodies under the bed in his apartment. Her father comes looking for her, and in one of the gorier scenes, he is hit with a cleaver to the face. After slaughtering a woman who comes to visit his apartment things begin to literally stink, and the local dogs start hanging around. (Be sure to check out how many times dogs appear in this film, very strange indeed). The killer unsuccessfully takes his victims to work with him, and tries to turn them into hamburger. Realizing that plan was not going to work, Marcos finally turns himself in when a homosexual neighbor offers to help with the disposal of the bodies in trade for...favors. I enjoyed this one, but it left me with a weird dark feeling.

3 out of 5 stars Anchor Bay rescues another so-so obscurity.......2000-12-07

Eloy De La Iglesia's "Cannibal Man" isn't about horror or even cannibalism. Instead, it's more of a parable about lower-class oppression and how the poor are deemed insignificant by the rest of society.

Marcos (Vincente Parra), a slaughterhouse worker with a beautiful young girlfriend, accidentally kills a cab driver and as a result becomes increasingly homicidal toward people over the course of one week. He's befriended by an eccentric who lives in an imposing apartment highrise nearby, and eventually Marcos becomes undone by guilt and the fact that he'll never get away with his crimes.

"Cannibal Man" is an odd title for this movie, considering there's no cannibalism (save for a brief soup-eating scene, but I don't think that qualifies) and it really comes from an era that preceded the 'cannibal/zombie boom' of the late 1970's and early 80's. The murders are relatively brief and not very inspired by today's standards (how many times have we seen a meat cleaver through the face in slasher films?), but the interaction between Marcos and his friend Nester is what really makes the movie. Morality, and--to a lesser degree--sexuality are questioned in a way that make "Cannibal Man"'s by-the-numbers bloodshed forgivable.

Recommended, but view with an open mind. This isn't the horror of Fulci or Argento, but is still worth a look.

Description

When a local begins fishing with dynamite in Bog Lake, something a bit larger pops to the surface- a green, bug-eyed mutant monster awakened from a long sleep, which promptly begins killing and eating fishermen who stumble across its lair. When Biologist Ginny discovers the creature's nature, the local sheriff decides to use any method to destroy the tenacious beast.

1 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes.......2007-06-22

I'm writing this because, just recently, Chicago designer Leroy Winbush passed away. He played the lead scuba diver in "Bog," which was shot in the mid-70's. Somehow Leroy was lured into this movie, probably because he was a diver. He never got paid and never saw the movie until I found a copy in a video store. When he saw it, he just shook his head. Some, if not all, of the underwater scenes were shot in a quarry in Redgranite, Wisconsin, by somebody with a 16mm wind-up Bolex in an underwater housing. I know. I was there. Here is my speculation. Most likely the entire movie was shot in 16mm. I think Nelsen Entertainment was a local group of people who were slick-talked by some Hollywood types into funding the project. They later realized how bad it was and tried to cut their losses by putting it out on video for rental. It never made it to the theaters. It has all the earmarks of an unfinished product hastily assembled. I think the rough film cut was transferred to video and edited at a Chicago photo store. The poor film quality was made even worse by the poor video transfer. The occasional freeze frames at certain cut points are baffling. The open and closing credits were blue-bordered because the film titles were too wide for the TV screen. The disastrous script would have made this an amusing b-grade horror film if it wasn't for the poor production. Compare this movie with "Jaws," which was made around the same time period.

2 out of 5 stars Early 80's movie with a 50's soundtrack and a 70's feel........2006-11-27

Buying this movie I thought it would be like "creature from black lake", "The Legend of Boggy Creek", or "shock Waves". Well Im a lover of cheesey movies but this movie was too cheesey. Very sharp cheesey. I was time warping watching this movie. First I felt the 70's with the acting . Then I felt the 50's with the movie music. Then I felt the 70's again with the theme song in the begining and at the end of the movie. All in all I got what I payed for, a very sharp cheesey movie. Not bad but not that good, just very cheesey!

2 out of 5 stars Gill-Man on Rampage.......2006-08-30

Contrary to the snazzy packaging this is a decades-old film. Fishing with dynamite on Bog Lake releases a deadly creature (although later scenes hint that it has been running around for a while). We see the action as it pertains to a couple of tourists who are almost never without a beer can in their hands, the local sheriff, the coroner and a doctor. Although local law enforcement is slow to accept the cause, they do recognize that there is something killing people.

Eventually people believe there really is a creature. That's when it gets really odd. The Sheriff gets some friends to go diving in the lake after he already knows doing so is deadly. In the early scenes, the creature's point of view makes it huge but when we see it, it is only man-sized. The ME and doctor spout a lot of scientific words that make little to no sense as is typical in these movies. But in the end we have a typical low-budget film with some final revelations and mysteries.

Nothing great here although the characterizations are almost all humourous, from the drunken Avery Schrieber look-a-like to the bi-polar sheriff. Trying to make sense of the science will tie your brain in knots. There are no clear shots of the creature an only a few un-clear ones. Mostly we just get the characters running around acting silly. Still, if you like rubber-suit monsters there is a slim chance you might get a kick out of this one.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-14

The story line is good but I was disappointed in the creature. It was like something out of an old "B" movie from the 60's.

2 out of 5 stars "Maybe I'm dense, but what kinda thing would have a hypodemic nerdle for a mouth?".......2005-11-09

Here's part of the product description for the film Bog (1983), as posted on the Amazon website..."When a local begins fishing with dynamite in Bog Lake, something a bit larger pops to the surface"...yeah, something popped to the surface all right, that being a particularly crummy film. Written by Carl Kitt (his only writing credit), and directed by Don Keeslar (The Capture of Grizzly Adams), Bog stars Gloria DeHaven (The Thin Man Goes Home, Yes Sir That's My Baby) and Aldo Ray (God's Little Acre, The Green Berets), both having seen much better days, cinematically speaking. Also appearing is Marshall Thompson (Fiend Without a Face, It! The Terror from Beyond Space), Don Daniel (Slumber Party Massacre II), and special guest star (gasp!) Leo Gordon (Hondo, Baby Face Nelson).

As the movie begins we see some idiot hick fishin' with dynamite on a secluded lake (cue twangy banjo music from film Deliverance), and guess what? The fishin' is good...that is until he's pulled into the water by something...so long, stupid! After this we're into some really shoddy looking credits and lame music played over scenes of a green station wagon cruising the Wisconsin backwoods. As the credits and music eventually end, the vehicle stops near a lake (the same one we saw at the beginning), and out pops a pair of completely annoying couples. Just to give you an idea how annoying, the one woman, who wears a tube top and is constantly shoving her camera down the front of her top, refers to her husband as `Chucky-Poo'...shortly after their arrival I began praying to the movie gods for the bog man to show up and exact some sort of divine retribution...my prays were heard, as old slimy pants does appear, but only goes after the two women, off screen, of course. The men run off to a nearby town and report their misfortune to Sheriff Neal Rydholm (Ray), who organizes a search party. Eventually the women are found (their corpses, that is), and now it's up to local pathologist Ginny Glenn (DeHaven) what happened, assisted by the local sawbones (as he refers to himself numerous times) Dr. Brad Wednesday (Thompson), a phony baloney name if I ever heard one. As the bodies begin to pile up, Ginny, based on her investigations, believes something ookie has risen from the murky depths, something that's draining the blood from its victims, while the sheriff, a man of action (when he's not drinking), detonates some plastic explosives in the lake...but that only serves to agitate the creature and more people die (which wasn't a bad thing). An ichthyologist, played by Gordon, makes the scene, and the townspeople begin to doubt the capabilities of their local law enforcement (with good reason). Exactly what is the nature of the beast, and what is its relationship to Adriana (also played by DeHaven), the old hag that lives near the lake?

Filmed on local in Wisconsin, Bog features a whole slew of people who obviously weren't actors but those culled from the local population, so being overly critical of them would be somewhat unfair...suffice to say, most who appeared in this movie weren't professional actors, and it showed...the worst was the guy who played the hillbilly character Wallace Fry...thankfully, his role is cut short by an untimely, but very welcomed death, one which, sadly, is off screen. So how about the `professional' performers? DeHaven was pretty bad in her dual roles, partly because of a ridiculous script, but her dismal showing paled in comparison to Aldo Ray, who appeared inebriated throughout the movie (I guess if I was strapped to such an abysmal production, I'd be inclined to drown myself in the booze also). The absolute worst aspect of this film for me was the script. Below is an exchange between Ginny and Dr. Brad Wednesday as they're postulating what kind of creature is running about based on their autopsy invesitgations...

Ginny: We know how the blood was taken...but by what? And Why?
Dr. Brad: Don't look at me...with the proper instruments I could duplicate the extractive process, but I can't imagine why anyone would want to...
Ginny: For food? No...yes! Well, what I mean is, why would (pregnant pause) Brad, don't look at me that way, and don't think I'm crazy...but...could we have a Dracula running loose out there?
(cue ominous music and goofy double take by Dr, Brad)

And here's another choice bit, the reaction from the sheriff as Ginny and Dr. Brad relate their theories as to the kind of creature responsible for the recent spate of deaths.

Sheriff Rydholm: Maybe I'm dense, but what kinda thing would have a hypodemic nerdle for a mouth?

And yes, the misspellings are on purpose, as that's exactly how he said it...I think he was supposed to be drunk at the time, I'm unsure. I also loved the scene where the townspeople storm into the sheriff's office demanding action.

Local Yokel: Sheriff, what're you people doing?!
Sheriff Rydholm: Slowly losing our marbles!

As far as the direction, it's a mess. There is a sense of forward movement, but the story often gets derailed with pointless interactions and annoying subplots (I could have done without the lame, romantic angle between a middle-aged Ginny and an over-the-hill Dr. Brad, especially their extended `necking' sequence). And then there were the bits with the old hag Adriana. Her character could have been removed completely and little would have been lost. She did serve a purpose, but it was one that could have been dealt with in a different, much more efficient method. The film runs about an hour and a half, but they could have shaved about 20 minutes off the running time, as the movie wore out its welcome very quickly. As far as the creature goes, we only get furtive flashes of it throughout most of the film (most all the deaths are of the off screen variety), which I don't rightly understand as once we finally do see the beast, it didn't look that bad...sure, it was fake (and goofy), but obviously something that took awhile to create...why not show it off? Oh well...also, the creature attacks (when shown) were edited with a series of quick cuts, probably meant to heighten the sense of action, but only served to create a sense of confusion. I think my favorite sequence involved Sheriff Rydholm calling in a couple of divers, telling them only that they're looking for bodies, but never warning them of the distinct possibility of a dangerous creature swimming about. The two divers, one of whom the sheriff was obviously good friends with, end up as monster chow, all because the sheriff neglected to impart a critical bit of information...nice...all in all this film is one great, big mess, but if you find entertainment in rotten cinema, there's some fun to be had here. I would have been inclined to go three stars just for Aldo Ray's character, but the video quality was putrid.

The DVD, released by a company called 905 Entertainment, features a terrible, fullscreen picture that looks as if it was taken from a well worn VHS tape. There's a perpetual `fuzzy' quality to the picture, looking much like someone smeared Vaseline on my TV screen. The Dolby Digital 2.0 audio fares a little better. There are no special features, but there are chapter stops, four of them...really, what's the point of including chapter stops if you're only going to have four of them? By the way, this film was released in 1983, but it was shot in the late 70s, and supposed to be released in 1978. Why the five year wait? I haven't the boggiest...er, I mean foggiest idea...

Cookieman108

If I learned anything from this film, it's that tube tops do not make good active wear, especially when you're running away from a monster as you have to use one hand to hold it up, else your bazooms will fall out.

1 out of 5 stars Why Lenzi Why?????.......2007-01-01

This movie shows us Lenzi at his weakest, considering it was done by Lenzi I thought this movie was going to be alot better, but I was mistaken. I found myself fast forwarding through the whole movie. I do not know how this get's classified as a Cannibal movie, it is far from it. If your a Lenzi fan and your on the fence about purchasing this film, do not do it the movie is not what you think it is. The only good this about this movie is seeing Me Me Lai naked, and that is the only reason I gave this movie 1 star.

5 out of 5 stars Cult classic for sure.......2006-07-15

Wow I can't believe this movie got two reviews. It's an incredible beautifully shot and directed film by Umberto Lenzi.
The other reviews I don't understand at all what the heck they were expecting maybe "Cannibal Holocuast". An excellent movie about a man whose life changes and how he adapts himself to a dramatic situation. This is the type of movie that shows how man will do anything to survive once he lives in a world that doesn't take order from the outside world.

Very well, Isaac Rassimov does a great job of acting and narrating the tale. Basically a photo journalist of sorts from London who gets captured by a tribe. The tribe does many bad things to him and he observes how they brand out justice to any strangers tresspassing on their land. Eventually one of the girls
(saving his life in the process) takes a liking to him and they become lovers. The musical score for this movie is amazing. Again , it's beautiful shot and some of the scenes showing the wildlife and locales will take your breath away guaranteed. Umberto Lenzi is best known for making average horror movies including a horrible called "NightMare City" but this is by his best and most remembered movie to date. The DVD features are thin but this is a great movie. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars LOL! WHERE THE HELL IS RICHARD HARRIS?.......2005-12-18

IS IT JUST ME, OR DOES THIS MOVIE BARE A STRIKING RESEMBLENCE TO "A MAN CALLED HORSE"? IT STARTS OUT LIKE THE SOFT CORE "EMMANUEL" FILMS OF THE 1970'S AND QUICKLY DECENDS INTO A B-RATE EXPLOITATION FLICK. THE PLOT TAKES A BACKSEAT TO NUDITY, GORY VIOLENCE, AND A SESPENSION OF REALITY. THE MAIN CHARACTER WALKS OUT ON A BEAUTIFUL BLONDE GIRLFRIEND AS IF SHE WERE A 2 DOLLAR HOOKER, KILLS A GUY IN A BAR FIGHT, GOES OFF ON SOME UNDERWATER PHOTO EXPEDITION, AND GETS FISHED OUT OF A RIVER BY A GROUP OF JUNGLE NATIVES WHO HAVE NEVER SEEN A WHITE MAN BEFORE. HE IS PUT TO WORK DRIVING WOODEN POSTS INTO THE RIVER BANK WHILE SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL NATIVE GIRLS WHO JUST HAPPEN TO BE COMPLETELY NAKED!(WOWZERS!) ONE OF THE GIRLS TAKES A LIKING TO HIM AND HE MUST ENDURE COMBAT AND TORTURE TO PROVE HIS BRAVERY AND VALUE AS A MEMBER OF THEIR TRIBE. (LIKE I SAID, DOESN'T THIS PLOT SOUND FAMILIAR?)
FROM A PURLY EXPLOITATIONAL POINT OF VIEW, "MAN FROM DEEP RIVER" IS A SURE CLASSIC. IT HAS EVERYTHING THE 13 YEAR OLD BOY INSIDE ALL OF US CRAVES: EXOTIC GIRLS, TRIBAL MEN WHO DONT CARE IF YOU FOOL AROUND WITH THEIR SISTERS, BAR FIGHTS, PRIMATIVE WARFARE, AND CANNIBALISM. NOT TOO BAD, AS LONG AS YOU DONT TAKE THE STORYLINE SERIOUSLY.

2 out of 5 stars Man from Sleep River.......2005-04-06

"The Man from the Deep River" as the credits show, is not what I expected. The box indicates that it is in the vein of all the other Italian cannibal movies. This is not the case as the film is more of a action adventure with little gore or horrific images. Basically, the plot is that a photographer gets stranded in the jungle and is captured by a native tribe. He eventually gains their acceptance and falls in love. He must ultimately decide if he should stay with the tribe or return to civilization. The director is widely known for his gross out movies but this is not really one of them. There are a few scenes of real animal killings and one sequence of cannibalism but other than that, there is nothing going on. Not much to recommend with this film, some good cinematography of the jungle locales, the one cannibalism scene, and that is about all. The DVD sports an interview with director Lenzi that is pretty good. He talks about how his one cannibalism scene was the first in the history of Italian cinema and a few other anecdotes about the movie. Not worth buying (like I did) but perhaps a rental.

1 out of 5 stars MAKE IT END! MAKE IT END!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!.......2006-05-19

The true horror of this movie is when you eventually drag yourself to the end of it, and you turn back and realize how much time in your life you just lost and you'll never be able to get it back again... AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
