This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane
Description
An epic film that "re-creates in stunning detail one of the most disastrous battles of World War II" (The Hollywood Reporter), A Bridge Too Far is a spectacular war picture. Painstakingly recreated on actual battlefield locations and boasting a remarkable cast that includes Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Sir Laurence Olivier and Robert Redford, A Bridge Too Far accurately recaptures the monumental scope, excitement and danger behind one of the biggest military gambles in history.
In September 1944, flush with success after the Normandy Invasion, the Allies confidently launched Operation Market Garden, a wild scheme intended to put an early end to the fighting by invading Germany and smashing the Reich's war plants. But a combination of battlefield politics, faulty intelligence, bad luck and even worse weather led to disaster beyond the Allies' darkest fears.

A Bridge from Classic to Modern War Film.......2007-05-25
A Bridge Too Far was one of the last epic WWII films. It cannot help but be linked to The Longest Day because they are both from Cornelius Ryan's books.
One of the differences in style from the previous film is the type of stars used for the main characters. Whereas Longest Day used many long-established stars, many who had been around for decades, the stars of Bridge are almost exclusively of contemporary vintage such as Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Ryan O'Neal, Elliot Gould, Anthony Hopkins, etc. Even Connery and Caine, who reached stardom in the Sixties are only in their mid-forties at this time. Unfortunately, and this is my only complaint, Attenborough chose to go with the trendy "Great Gatsby" style glow with the cinematography. The humor put into Longest Day is almost totally absent from Bridge and further contributes to its modern realism. Speaking of realism, those familiar with the writing of Panzer commander Hans Von Luck will appreciate the effort and money spent on the war action. It is spectacular. The artillery shelling is fearsome, the airborne assault is awesome, and the boat attacks are hellish.
Mr. Attenborough impressively helms this massive story, keeping track of the big picture while drawing in the the viewer with short, poignant individual exploits. The most memorable of these lasts only a few seconds as the Dutch father turns to see his son, who has been so brave and helpful, has been killed by a stray bullet. The horror of war in that moment is more real than the entire three hours of movies like Apocalypse Now. Shortly after that, the camera fills the frame with a monstrous German tank, firing mercilessly straight toward you.
Of the star-studded cast, Connery, Caan, and Hopkins shine the most. James Caan gets one of the best scenes in the movie: a wild jeep ride through German lines to save a buddy. If Steve McQueen had been in the movie, this would have been his role, but Caan does it quite well enough. Sean Connery was reportedly miffed that Redford got more than he did for much less screen time. Sean has a point, he's outstanding and convincing in his role, while Redford is pretty much playing Redford. Anthony Hopkins, whose star was rising at this point, puts another notch in his career as the Tommy paratrooper Colonel who's sent to do the impossible. Much of Gene Hackman's performance of the Polish general is presenting a frustrated man who fully realizes the FUBAR scenario that he must participate in. On the minus side,Ryan O'Neal seems too youthful to be a general and Michael Caine has so little to do one wonders if there isn't quite a bit of extra footage laying around somewhere. Not that the film needs it, but it would be a nice DVD treat.
A Bridge Too Far is a great film. It's a pity Attenborough couldn't have assembled a similar cast and crew and gone on to make the definitive film version of Battle of the Bulge. That would have supplied the one thing lacking from Bridge-a victory.
A Classic Epic of the Second World War.......2007-04-01
This film adaptation of Cornelius Ryan's "A Bridge Too Far" strives to capture the enourmity of the heroic attempt by an Allied Airborne Army to reach the Rhine River and flank German defenses in Holland in the Fall of 1944. Ryan's book dealt with Operation Market-Garden at every level, from the foxhole to the Allied and German General Staffs. The movie features dozens of superb performances, including many cameos by strong actors in a nearly three hour movie, but is less coherent than the book.
Operation Market-Garden was the brain-child of British Field Marshal Montgomery, but the push to execute the high risk operation in the face of conflicting intelligence reporting came from an Airborne Army (led in the movie by Dirk Bogarde) that was a little too eager to get in the fight. The American 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions (the latter led in the movie by Ryan O'Neal), the British 1st Airborne Division (commanded in the movie by a superbly cast Sean Connery), and a Polish Parachute Brigade (led in the movie by Gene Hackman) were to lay down a carpet of troops through Holland to the Rhine River. British Thirty Corps (led in the movie by a scene-stealing Edward Fox, supported by Michael Caine) was supposed to batter its way up the narrow road opened by the airborne troops to the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem. Anthony Hopkins puts in a magnificently laconic performance as commander of the one unit that does reach Arnhem.
The German side is well represented by Maximilian Schell and Hardy Kruger as the respective Army and Division commanders responsible for the defense of Arnhem. Their initial surprise and confusion are quickly replaced by decisive action as the Germans forcefull moved to stave off the Allied attack short of success.
This hughly entertaining movie captures the individual heroism that underlies even an ultimately unsuccessful battle and the confusion that can undermine even the best of intentions by general officers. It is highly recommended to fans of the war epic genre and to the general viewer seeking an educational look at the battle.

Bridge Too Far One of the Best.......2007-01-15
A Bridge Too Far is one of the very best movies. There is an all star cast which movie makers can't afford any more. This movie is focuesed on the politics and personalities away from the front lines with some battle scenes.
The most impressive all-star cast ever assembled for a single production..........2006-12-22
Richard Attenborough's monumental war drama is about one of the most stirring battles of World War II, based on the best-seller by Cornelius Ryan... The film presents the most impressive all-star cast ever assembled for a single production...
World War II's "Operation Market Garden" would have put the Allies in control of the major road leading into the industrial Ruhr, the heart of the German war machine... The war would have ended in a matter of weeks... Instead, what Market Garden left in its wake, through a combination of costly miscalculations, bad weather, battlefield politics and tactical errors, were more than 17,000 British, American, Dutch and Polish casualties, nearly twice as many dead as in Normandy...
On Sunday, September 17th, 1944, the largest assemblage of gliders, bombers, transports and fighters ever involved in a single mission flew over eastern Holland, and dropped 35,000 assault troops along the 64 mile road corridor between Belgium and Arnhem, the Dutch city on the Rhine River...
This airborne army - the Market phase of the operation - was assigned the task of taking and holding the six major bridges along the corridor...
Smashing through the crumbling German resistance along the way, the British Corps tanks and infantry - the Garden phase - were to link up with the paratroops and, with their help, drive the retreating armies of the Third Reich back into their own homeland...
The Germans, however, correctly guessed the British plan and formed a ring of armor around the approaches to the bridge at Arnhem... The result was near slaughter for all the allied forces and an enormous number of German dead...
Col. John Frost (Anthony Hopkins) and the survivors of his 2nd Battalion battered their way through heavy German fire to the northern end of Arnhem bridge, where they took up a strong position in houses over-looking the entire bridge...
For four long days and nights, Frost and his 'valiant few' held this tenuous position against superior German tanks and infantry... The Dutch civilian helped by piling the bodies of the dead - friend and enemy alike - in forbidding barricades across each major street to prevent Germans from reaching Frost and his men at the bridge...
Major General Roy Urquhart (Sean Connery), Brigadier James Gavin (Ryan O'Neal), Lieut.Col Joe Vandeleur (Michael Caine) and the rest of the Allied commanders met with much the same resistance and disaster...
At the Nijmegen highway bridge it became obvious that the British tanks would be stopped until the bridge's northern end could be taken by an assault crossing of the Waal River... This brave action, executed in a full clear day under murderous German fire by Major Julian Cook (Robert Redford) and his battalion, has been described by witnesses as one of the most heroic deeds of arms in World War II...
Delayed by ground fog in England, both replacements and badly-needed supplies were late in arriving... Communication was so bad; most of the food and ammunition fell into the hands of the Germans...
The Polish Parachute Brigade, under Major General Sosabowski (Gene Hackman) command, held up three days by the fog, finally made their drop into a deadly thick shower of German rifle and machine gun fire... Many died before they touched ground, and the rest met with further disaster...
Casualties were enormous and the hundreds of British wounded were placed in the Beautiful home - of Dutch heroine Kate Ter Horst (Liv Ullman) - offered as a surgery and the small hotels provided some bed space for the worst casualties...
Laurence Olivier (Dr. Spaander) wins a cease-fire from the German Lieut. General Wilhelm Bittrich (Maximilian Schell), in order to bury the dead and surrender the wounded...
Meanwhile, Col. Frost and the last few at Arthem bridge were taken prisoners by the Germans... Only a few escaped... Vandeleur's advance was stopped cold... Urquhart hopelessly surrounded planned a retreat down the river... The Germans, lighting the river with rockets, began firing on the fleet and only some made it to the other side...
The following morning, Padre Pere, a British Chaplain who stayed behind with his wounded men, noticed the mysteriously frightening silence that prevailed throughout the whole Oosterbeck area... All of the surviving patients realized that they were now German prisoners... The battle of Arnhem was over...
This is an enormous story of an horrifying human disaster... A plan formulated by Field-Marshal Montgomery and sanctioned by General Eisenhower... The film shakes you... The pity of it touches you...
Richard Attenborough has consolidated his position in the British cinema by directing notable films based on true characters and events: "Young Winston," "A Bridge Too Far" and then had a phenomenal success with "Gandhi," winner of 8 Academy Awards...

Surprisingly good.......2007-04-21
What a wonderfully produced film. I watched it only 'cause I was sick home for the day, and expected just another lousy slasher flick. That's not this film at all.
The music is wonderful, the set design establishes a dreary mood of war in the trenches, and the acting is really quite good.
What I liked best is that this movie can be viewed in so many different ways _ horror film, ghost story, political metaphor. I have no idea what the writer had in mind putting this screenplay together, but sometimes the most seemingly simple stories can be the most complex. This is a good film.
Excellent period horror film.......2006-12-28
I really loved this movie!!! It was very different than many horror films because it took place in a German bunker during war time. Probably the reason that it was soo scarey and chilling to me, is I wonder how many "old bunkers" that exist now actually are haunted. What stories could be told from them? It did remind me of Dead Birds in which the past does repeat itself over and over again. I highly recommed this movie to anyone that wants to see something different than the "run of the mill teen scream horror" films.
Excellent mood thriller...very chilling.......2006-11-12
I'm impressed. I watched the first half-hour of this movie and was kinda into it, but not as much as I would have liked to have been. Then I came back a day later and watched the last hour and was pretty much glued to the TV. See, what this movie does is what so many modern horror movies don't do, which is create a sustained creepy mood level throughout. It makes you feel like at any moment something could happen even when nothing much of note is. And THAT is what horror is all about.
Another thing that greatly adds to the mood is that background "void" music. It's like a creepy little brief wind/void sound that really adds to the environment perfectly. I think it's one of the main reasons I was so drawn into the movie. Excellent choice of background sound.
I cannot forget to praise the actual look and feel of the trenches as well. That was the other mood grabber. The trench is almost like its own character.
The special effects are what they are. They're not insulting but not the greatest. But they're used so little it doesn't matter. And since this whole thing isn't in real time anyway that can be used as a crutch reason why. They shouldn't ruin anything for anybody.
I liked the ending a lot and I love the psychology behind it. This is definitely one of the better horror flicks I've seen lately. Kudos to the director for sucking me in and not letting me go.
Very Well Made.......2006-11-04
This is how horror films should be made. DEATHWATCH comes with a very smart
script, an excellent cast, beautiful cinematography, and a very spooky
atmosphere, dripping with dread. Horror films have a bad reputation because
most of them just ain't made this well.
In addition to the above positive points, this film knows when to be subtle
and when to shock... and the shocking moments do the job perfectly. Yes, it
is gory in parts, but the violence tells the story... it isn't there for
empty shock value.
The only trouble I have with this film is the CGI. I'm not a fan of CGI
in general... but when it is anything less than perfect, I am VERY annoyed
by it. The CGI in DEATHWATCH is above average. It is only in a few shots
of the film. But still, it is the only real "flaw" I can draw attention
to. And no, the CGI did not dilute the overall power of this very
impressive horror film.
Bottom line... If you like horror movies and/or if you are into war films,
DEATHWATCH is brilliantly executed and well worth your money.
soldiers wrestling with the demons of war...or something worse?.......2006-04-18
This film is a classic example of how to build an almost unbearable sense of doom and claustrophobia;the trenches of WWI have never looked as wet and miserable in a film; the production design is a major contributor to the effectiveness of DEATHWATCH. The baffling maze of trenches--a nightmare bog of corpses,razor-wire, rats and diseased mud--is such an evocative setting that one wishes the film were all the way up to the challenge of delivering the best horror film in a war setting ever. (Sorry, Michael Mann, but The Keep didn't quite do it) Sadly, Deathwatch doesn't quite make it to classic status either; if a few instances of flashy CGI Special Effects had been allowed to remain unseen and the plot taken in a slightly more psychological direction I would be raving about this movie --it's quite gripping from the start and its sense of damp nightmare horror lingers in the mind after viewing.
Deathwatch makes an interesting comparison to another film with a remarkably similar set-up called THE BUNKER that came out around the same time concerning German Soldiers in WWII. I have a theory that if DEATHWATCH had remained purely psychological and THE BUNKER had gone in the direction of more explicit supernatural manifestations--if both films had traded certain characteristics--each film would be much stronger; as it is I prefer Deathwatch. There are some really creepy scenes and some of the performances quite well done; Jaime Bell does hysteria and ruined youth very well and Andy Serkis amazes with his growling psychotic brute.

Surreal Fantasy Film By Takashi Miike: Strange, Fun & Weird!.......2007-02-12
Not your typical Takashi Miike film, but then what is typical of Takashi Miike? You have to hand it to Miike: his cinematic range is far and wide. I bought this film along with "The Bird People Of China," a few weeks ago and viewed both of them on consecutive days. And I liked them both. Yeah, there is a cartoonish feel to the film, but there is also a very strange and weird feel to the film that appealed to me also. [Kids film huh?] The Yokai are based on Japanese folk tales, and the only other one I ever saw was the 1968 film, "Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare," which was so silly and lame that I never even finished viewing it. Therefore, I was hesitant at first to buy the film. But I'm glad I did. The film may not appeal to many who are used to Miike's usual fare of cinema, but I liked it anyway.
This imaginative fantasy film by Miike centers around a young boy named Tadashi (Ryunosuke Kamiki) whose mother and father have recently separated. They are now living with his grandfather. Neither are ever home [usually]. One day during the village festival, young Tadashi is chosen as the "kirin rider," who is supposed to be a champion of peace and justice. However, Tadashi's role as the 'kirin rider' will eventually propel him to fight the forces of darkness. This is one strange and totally unpredictable film. Moreover, Miike's take on a children's fantasy is one hell of a bizarre film. In Tadashi's attempt to save earth from the forces of darkness, Tadashi encounters the Yokai, who are there to help him on his journey. And I must say, they are some of the strangest characters I have ever seen in a fantasy film.
These Yokai are each bizarre characters, and with Miike behind the lens, you just know you're in for one hell of a ride. You have an odd assortment of Yokai, whose descriptions sound truly insane. From one-legged beasts, an umbrella jumping around on its only leg, spider-like balls, you name a shape, these creatures probably have it. The Yokai are truly bizarre characters. They are not at all like the silly rubber suited ones in the 1968 Yokai film. These ones are truly strange. In fact the entire film is strange. I don't know if I ever saw two Yokai that were the same. Each was unique, and the special effects people and costume designers must have had a field day creating these strange mythical characters of Japanese folklore.
The visuals in the film were very good, not great, but pretty darn good. I am not into fantasy films, and only watch them because my two young daughters like fantasy. Therefore, the only time I ever watch fantasy films is with my children. This film was an exception to the rule. However, this is one fantasy film that I REALLY LIKED. And I am happy to have it in my film collection, and make no apologies for it. I recommend the film. Rent it first, however, if you have young children you might want to hold off until they are a little older. I don't believe I would have allowed my two daughters to watch this film if they were younger. Afterall, this is a Takashi Miike film we're talking about. Recommended. [Stars: 3.5]
great.......2007-01-07
i give this movie two thumbs up! It's a story about the creatures of Japan's folklore. (And it wasn't anything like the "Never Ending Story") The only way "it was like a kid's movie", or the Never Ending Story, is because the main character is a child... i believe this movie is for you if you take any interest in Japan's culture.
ICHIBAN!.......2006-10-25
Miike does it again! Just when you think you've got this guy figured out, he does something different and somehow makes it his own! THE GREAT YOKAI WAR is a fantasy movie in the same vein as NEVERENDING STORY, DARK CRYSTAL, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, LOTR, and LABYRINTH. However, by sucessfully intergrating japanese folklore and contemparary stylization, something new and fresh is created. While there is no overly didactic messages, elements of anti-consumerism and envioronmentalism are hinted at. Essentially the themes are as simple as believing in yourself and the magic of childhood.
Tadashi Ino is an introspective kid living with his mother at his grandpa's house after his parents divorce. When he is bitten by a puppet dragon (a kirin) at a festival, he is told by the local kids that he is now the Kirin Rider. Takashi takes the duty seriously as it becomes more evident thoughout the film that this folklore is true! Soon enough this kid (who's a very good actor, by the way) is up to his chin in monsters and adventure! He teams up with a montley crew of spooks and weirdos (including the rockstar of yokai, the KAPPA), gets an awesome sword, fights robots, and saves Tokyo from the forces of evil! What more could you ask for?
One of the greatest things about the film is the inventiveness of the yokai costumes themselves. All kinds of masks, suits, makeup, puppets, prosthetics, and digital effects are used to create an epic rouges gallery of monsters. Miike always works with great physical effects artists and designers. Also, Miike taps his large pool of veteran actors like Kenichi Endo and Renji Ishibashi to play some of the yokai. He creates a sort of yokai theatre that both children and adults can get lost in. There are a few small scenes that might be a little on the scary side for very small kids, but overall this is a very colorful and light hearted fantasy film. I'm glad this genre is making a comeback (MIRRORMASK comes to mind), and I'm happy to see that Takashi Miike dove right in there and gave us this gem!
Japanese folklore comes to life.......2006-09-09
Kappa. Tengu. Yuki Onna, Kawa Hime. Chochin Obake. Kasa Obake. Japan's fantasy monsters, called Yokai in Japanese, are an unending list of bizarre creativity, from a culture that spawns goblins for almost every situation. Something of a national obsession, there are books and comics and movies dedicated to packing as many of them as possible.
Takashi Miike's "The Great Yokai War" ("Yokai Daisenso") is the latest flick to gather all the yokai together, sending all the kids of Japan running for their copies of Shigeru Mizuki's yokai encyclopedias to see if they can name that obscure creature that popped on the screen for a few seconds. While Miike is best known in the US for his controversial hard horror films like "Audition" and "Visitor Q", this is not his first jaunt into light-hearted kid's films, having previously made the superhero film "Zebraman." "The Great Yokai War" is a remake of a 1968 film of the same name, that was released as "Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare" in the US.
All in all, it is lots of fun. The story is pretty typical of children's fantasy, with the young boy Tadashi Ino being a nobody at school, the target for bullies and abuse. Tadashi is one day chosen at a local festival to be the Kirin Rider, for which he receives a small flag and a special lunch. Although Tadashi doesn't think this actually means anything, he finds himself drawn in a yokai war, acting as the chosen human champion to help fight the evil Kato, who is merging yokai spirits into machine technology in order to create an army to take over the world. Tadashi gets some help along the way, with his fighting companions being a kappa, the red-faced Kirin Herald, and the childlike but seductive River Princess. Of course he has a magic sword.
The yokai are the real stars, and Miike has used modern special effects to create them in a realistic but amusing fashion. Some of them are scary, some are ridiculous, but they are all actual creatures from Japanese folklore. It is pretty cool seeing them all on the screen and moving around, especially the bizarre Kasa Obake, a haunted umbrella with a long wagging tongue. Along with his digital monsters, Miike has pulled in some of Japan's great modern actors too, including the ubiquitous Takenaka Naoto ("Shall we dance?" "Waterboys") and Kuriyama Chiaki ("Battle Royale," "Kill Bill 1"). It is really great seeing veteran actor Sugawara Bunta ("Battles without honor or humanity") playing Tadashi's grandfather.
Lots of comparisons can be drawn between "The Great Yokai War" and other children's fantasy films like "Neverending Story," and the similarities are obvious. However, "Neverending Story" is a great flick, and what works there works here too. Tadashi is a believable child-hero, and the yokai are as charming and funny as any of Bastian's companions.

The Island of Doctor Moreau is a remake of 1932's Island of Lost Souls and, of course, an adaptation of H.G. Wells's classic tale of the dangers of playing God. Shipwreck victim Andrew (Michael York) washes up on a tropical island and is taken in by Dr. Moreau (Burt Lancaster), who lords over a compound staffed by some distinctly odd-looking servants. Also along for the ride are the mysteriously beautiful Maria, menacing shadows in the jungle, and lots and lots of cages in the House of Pain. While not as eerily creepy as its predecessor, The Island of Doctor Moreau has some fun makeup tricks and a good tiger fight or two, not to mention a thorough discussion of legal nuance by the island's "natives" ("What is the law?" "Not to walk on all fours!"). Definitely a fine afternoon's entertainment. Remade in 1996 with Marlon Brando. --Ali Davis

(65% English and 35% Greek Language; No Subtitles; 111 Min) THE GREEK HOLOCAUST: 1915-1922 The modern day genocide of the Greeks of the Pontos and Micra Asia (Asia Minor). On September 8, 1922 the Moslem Ottoman Turks committed the first case of modern day genocide and ethnic cleansing. It began with the genocide of over one million Armenian Christians around 1915. Between 1915 and 1922 over 350,000 Greek Orthodox Christians of the Pontos and up to 1,500,000 Greek Orthodox Christians of Micra Asia were exterminated by forced death marches and burnings. Holocaust, which comes from the Greek word "olokaftoma," means total consumption by fire. We hope that the survivors who share their memories and stories of unspeakable pain will help the world remember this groteque crime. As we approach the 100th year anniversary of the horror of the Greek holocaust, we offer this film as a memorial to the Greek Orthodox victims of the Pontos and Micra Asia.
