In Lucio Fulci's genre classic Zombi 2, the dead rise once again to terrorize and consume the flesh of the living, this time Caribbean style! Those new to Fulci should note Island of the Flesh-Eaters, Zombi 2, and the more commonly known Zombie all refer to the same film. Though there is no Zombi 1, Fulci's film was titled Zombi 2 to capitalize on the commercial success of Romero's Dawn of the Dead. Though marketed as a sequel in Italy, the only similarities to Romero's classic are the title and the fact that the dead rise to eat the flesh of the living. Instead of being a metaphor for consumerism, Zombi 2 is a straight-out adventure story that ends in a horrific, apocalyptic nightmare. The plot is fairly straightforward, and more or less exists simply as a structure to hang scenes of extreme gore and terror on. Dr. Bowles's boat floats into New York Harbor missing its crew and carrying an undead passenger. The doctor's daughter (Tisa Farrow), dead set on finding out what happened to her father, teams up with journalist Peter West (Ian McCulloch) and heads to the cursed island of Matool, where a zombie epidemic is growing and Dr. Bowles's friend, Dr. Menard (Richard Johnson), is desperately trying to find a cure. Will Anne find her father? Will Dr. Menard find a cure? Will our heroes escape? In all honesty, who really cares? Because those in the "know" already know you don't come to a Fulci film looking for Shakespeare. What Zombi 2 lacks in plot development and continuity, it more than makes up for in atmosphere, intensity, and of course the trademark Fulci gore. Some of the unique high points are the never-duplicated zombie-versus-shark vignette, the rising of the Spanish zombie conquistadores, and Fulci's trademark eye shot. Fans of Italian/apocalyptic/cannibal/zombie films should not miss Zombi 2. Along with The Beyond, it defines the genre. --Rob Bracco

Zombies are one of those horror staples that have gotten putrid, after one too many idiotic blood'n'gore-fests with a revolting script. Like poor Dracula, they run out of things to do.

But zombie films are revitalized by the wickedly funny "Shaun of the Dead," a tale of music, love, pubs, and the slobbering undead. In the vein of Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive," it's full of twisted humour, funny dialogue and plenty of gore.

Shaun (Simon Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) are the poster boys for adolescentus slackeritis, living in a London flat with their peeved roommate Pete, who has actually grown up and gotten a real job. Ed plays video games all day, and Shaun's immaturity has just gotten him dumped by his long-suffering girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield).

Wrapped up in his love life woes, Shaun fails to notice a little news item: Human beings all over London are transforming into zombies. At first, Shaun obliviously drowns his sorrows, and has a nasty encounter when he goes to pick up a soda. Now he must mend his relationship with Liz and defend himself and his family from the hordes of ravenous zombies... by barricading them in a pub.

"Shaun" makes the whole genre seem fresh just because it doesn't take itself seriously. The heroes don't even have guns (since the UK public don't get them), and so our heroes fend off the zombies with vinyl records, shovels and cricket bats. That gives an idea of how serious this movie is.

"Shaun of the Dead" isn't so much a zombie movie as a love story with zombies -- a very funny one, with lots of gore. We're treated to slackers in love, Shaun drifting obliviously around London withoutn noticing the undead, and some very entertaining dialogue ("Just look at the face: it's vacant, with a hint of sadness. Like a drunk who's lost a bet...")

Later on, he's forced to shake off his obliviousness in order to save his loved ones, with a bat as his only weapon. And maybe some commandos in a tank. It's gory, and the ending gets a bit cliched and overserious, but the ride up until then is wonderfully scripted and full of hilarious crude comic moments. Not sex-organ/bathroom humor, but definitely not highbrow.

Everybody knows guys like Shaun and Ed. Pegg perfectly plays a slacker with a heart of gold, who would like to be more than he is, but doesn't have the slightest clue how to go about it. Frost is a good annoying sidekick for Shaun, and Ashfield does a good job as the long-suffering girlfriend.

As a bonus, music geeks will laugh themselves silly over such important decisions as: which albums should our reluctant heroes throw at the zombies? "Stone Roses?" "No." "...Second Coming?" "I liked it." "Dire Straits?" "Chuck it!" Good choice, Shaun m'boy.

While it's a hilarious movie, it's not a spoof -- rather it's a zombie movie with wit, love and comedy. By not taking itself too seriously, "Shaun of the Dead" ends up revitalizing a genre that seemed like it was... well, almost dead.

This film is an amazing horror film, great story, good characters and amazing effects. This flick has it all, blood, gore, sex, splatter, and great visual's with the graveyard, espessially at night. Truly great horror film with all the ingredients of true horror included.

Cemetary Man.......2007-05-17

This film will ALWAYS be a classic for me. Being an indy film maker myself, I really appreciate the attention to detail with the art side of the flick, but it's not too overbearing. It's gory and has all the elements of a good zombie/horror movie. Continual, unending twists and turns for our hero makes your heart ache.

If you haven't seen this movie. Get out from under your rock and DO SO!

Minus the DVD Quality an Excellent Delight!.......2007-04-30

The movie is certainly eccentric and is not for everyone. If ones penchant is the likes of "The Night of the Living Dead" or the "Dawn of the Dead," it will certainly disappoint. However, for true horror fans and fans of zombie genres it presents a unique presentation and perspective with greater character study. There's something very funny about the sight of the dour Rupert Everett nonchalantly blowing off the heads of walking corpses that doesn't immediately strike you as funny, but remains in your mind as a wonderfully light-hearted way of approaching such actions. Much like the excellent Donnie Darko and Mulholland Dr., Delamorte Dellamore is a film that will probably remain in your mind for a long time after you finish watching it as you try to figure out what it all means. The mixture of humor, character study, fine acting, gore, and nudity sets it self apart from the many usual and common "shoot'em up" zombie movies. However, I do have one quarrel. It's not the movie, it's the production company who transfered and dubbed the movie. It was extremely poor. Even Rupert Everett, Mickey Knox and Clive Riche who are all english actors seemed to been dubbed, with a number of the actors, particularly Anna Falchi, being given extremely weak voices. I would of suggested watching it in Italian with English subtitles, but that option isn't available with the American DVD. Unfortunately it seems both the German, UK, and the US version are "MIA" when it comes to quality. In the end if you don't mind DVD quality, those with an interest in the bizarre are recommended to check this title out!

Cemetery Man: a thinking man's zombie flick.......2007-04-12

Until recently, Cemetery Man (aka Dellamorte Dellamore) could not be bought on this side of the Atlantic in either VHS or DVD format, and those that were available from 'private' sources were pirated and over-priced. Thanks to Amazon for making this horror classic available to Americans.

Don't even steal this movie!!!.......2007-04-07

This tripe was horrible. The only reason i gave it 1 star is because of the bus wreck that was very gory. Besides that, and when the boy scout zombies attack, I fast forwarded thru the entire movie. Even the nudity was horrible. If all other movies on earth are destroyed and TV is abolished, you should STILL not watch this film!!!!!

Essentially, Rob Zombie brings back the B-movie tradition of the 70's/80's-style slasher-flick, utilizing aesthetics with a combination of influences from 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', 'Friday the 13th', even 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' {particularly in the resemblence of 'Tiny's mangled face to Freddy Krueger}. These personages are based on Marx Brothers characters in name only - these are entirely "hellbilly" in countenance, consisting primarily of Captain Spaulding, Otis, and Baby Firefly, with a couple of side characters, who are veritably 'awakened' from their slumber by vengeful Police from the massacres in the previous film House of 1,000 Corpses". Mama Firefly is taken into custody, and Tiny is nowhere to be found...

Set in the Texas desert, this white-trash family, each with their own neurosis, bounce their particular insanities upon eachother, experiencing the joys and dangers of life on a caveman level of existance. After all, a family of wolves can at one moment enjoy a freshly slaughtered rabbit or deer together, happily tearing limb from limb, then go off to later play together.

After another shootout, the pursuit begins again and they are on the run, pulling all their resources together at the expense of others, calling upon the evil clown to accompany Otis and Baby in this latest predicament. So after Spaulding accesses a car in the name of "important clown business", the three are reunited, spreading terror upon all those they encounter, usually ridiculing, humiliating, mutilating, and otherwise raping their victims before finally killing them.

Along the way they meet up with pimp 'Charlie Altamont' {Ken Foree, whom you may recognize from 'From Beyond'} and have one hell of a time in wordly pleasures, until he pulls a veritable "Lando Calrisian"*, betraying the group to the crusading Sheriff. Charlie has more of a moron than an imbecile in a henchman named 'Clevon' {played by Michael Berryman: 'The Hills Have Eyes'}, engage in a particularly amusing scene while purchasing chickens from an inbred cletus.

Sheriff Wydell, who fancies himself a "devil slayer", readies himself for a 'final confrontation' - a veritable "apocalypse" in his mind, employing the aid of a couple of nefarious bounty hunters called "The Unholy Two", comprised of imposing bikers 'Rondo' and 'Billy Ray Snapper', who interrupt the festivities and construct arrangements to Wydell's specifications. Continuing with his revenge-fueled righteous christinsanity, besides photos of victims being stapled to their chests, Otis is actually nailed into his chair a-la the nazarene {the fact that he has long hair and a beard added to the effect greatly}, and are set to burn alive in a literal "Hell". Now the punctilious "hunter becomes the hunted" scenario transgresses. "The Angel" is let loose to be pursued by the wolf on her heels receiving a taste of her own medicine, but in one of those unexpected 'twists', just when all seems finished, a mysterious ally appears...

With the odds stacked against them, the movie ends in a hail of bullets to a final end...?

With a relatively all-star cast, there will be some recognizable familiarities from time to time. Herein is one Priscilla Barnes {'Terri Alden' from 'Three's Company'}, being slapped around, fondled, deceived, and stabbed. Geoffrey Lewis, who has one of those faces materializing from many formative evocations. Also amusing is the manner in which the last victim at the motel is dispatched - by pure horror. The skin from the face of her own husband is placed upon hers, where she is left dangling on the back of the door to be found by the screaming maid. She inadvertently does herself in.

This film displays, in an albeit base level, the might is right dynamic, and that man is a vicious animal in his most primal state, where so-called principles of 'good and evil' are completely subjective terms, where the clever and ruthless prevail, manipulating where necessary to gain selfish ends, moving the world according to what is placed into action. Perceptions will sometimes be tested in what one perceives is supposed to happen, and what actually can, and does happen.

Yes, this movie is so bad that even the devil rejected it!.......2007-06-12

Thil film depicts ultra violence and gore. It tries to scare the audience with brutal ways of killing people
but the acting was so bad it's laughable. For example, in one scene a person was being killed with an ax. The
killer hit his victim at least three times with an ax. The victim screamed and moaned but he continued
to talk! His face was covered with blood but it showed no pain at all. The make-up looked absolutely fake.
It's so boring that I rejected it from the player after finishing two-third of it.

There are much better horror movies which made me shudder. They are: Slither, Cabin Fever, 28 days later,
Pet Semetery and the Grudge.

Zombie's Creative Genius.......2007-06-01

Amazing. Rob Zombie did an amazing job with the campy yet creepy House of 1000 Corpses, but the sequel is superior is so many ways. This movie is more detailed than the first and also more striking. The scene where Otis murders Banjo and Sullivan is beautiful against the bright blue of the sky and dirtiness and blood-soaked foreground. The music is also impeccable. Esp. Zombie's choice of Terry Reid- whose music sounds exactly like the movie looks. There;s also some really great more popular songs on the CD. "Free Bird" is now only assocaited with me the ending scene- with is the only sort of redemption and saddening part of the film. There are not heros in this movie but you come to adore many of characters you are supposed to hate.

Not Pleasant but.......2007-05-18

I haven't seen "House of a 1000 Corpses" however, this is an interesting film - would have been 3 and a half stars for me.

The violence is very unpleasant and there is also quite a lot of nudity (women of course) and inferred sexual violence as well. But don't watch it if you're easily upset by these things.

Unlike some previous reviewers I disagree about the acting and the directing. Some of the cutting/editing was very clever and most of the time the acting was pretty good. There is an edge of very black comedy (ala the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre) in this film. OK it is very black and I didn't actually laugh but I assure you it is there. This is helped by a classic soundtrack of 70's rock (the film is set in 1978), which provides a very strange contrast to the extreme violence being portrayed.

The murderous family are quite believable, and there continual bickering with each other has a ring of truth about it. Look out for Geoffery Lewis a veteran of the two Clint Eastwood "Every Which..." films.

In all honesty you don't really care what happens to the people in the film, but it is strangly compelling viewing.

rob has done it again i like his style of music and hes just as good making movies although i liked house of 1000 corpses a little better this was a great movie great style great story

Good Sequel.......2007-07-06

This is a great sequel to the original. Although it didn't seem as dark and scary as the first, it made up for it in action. The movie picks up where the first one left off. As our heroine has escaped the hospital she finds a devastated world. She must find her only surviving friend and do what she can to bring the Umbrella Corporation down. She finds out more horrible truths about them and is assisted by a unlikely allie. Both movies complement each other nicely. I definitely recommend you add this to your Horror/SciFi collection. A must for anyone that owns "Resident Evil".

This movie is almost perfect in its execution. Sure its still not completely faithful to the game but hey you cant have it all. This movie is so entertaining you will not even notice the time passing. Nemesis is scary and tough. The story is actually very good and entertaining as well. Siena Guillroy is excellent as Jill Valentine and Oded Fehr is a very good Carlos Oliveira. All in all a very entertaining good movie.

Fun to watch on the go!.......2007-05-09

RE: Apocalypse is a fun movie for me to watch, enjoying some of my favorite actors fighting through hordes of the undead to save a girl and get a way out of a locked down city before a nuclear explosion wipes everything out.

As a person studying abroad, I got the UMD for the reason that it's easy to watch on my PSP on the plane or late at night, not having a TV around to watch it on. And I don't have to worry about a larger disc being broken in transit or the case cracking.

A fun movie to watch, and compact enough to carry around easily.

R.E.: THE GAMERS VERSION........2007-04-28

When I first rented the original "Resident Evil" I was completely shocked at how much I liked it. I had zero expectations for it, yet was sucked in by it's story, characters and visualisation. So I ran out and purchased it (as soon as it was on sale). Since then I've watched it about 10 times, which is pretty remarkable considering I have roughly 350 DVDs to choose from. Given this, as a non-gamer, I was surprised to find that gamers were generally disappointed in this movie (not all of them, but most negative reviews were from gamers).

Now we have "Resident Evil- Apocalypse". Don't get to see "grown-up" movies at the theater, so I had to wait until the DVD release. I liked the first so much, I did not even think of renting this. I quickly bought the DVD (when it went on sale, never buy at full price)with much anticipation. Roughly 3 years later I have viewed it approximately (well, ACTUALLY)1 time. That's right, no type-o. JUST ONCE. It was not nearly as compelling as the first film (to me). Gone was the gripping story, the great camera work, the excellent character development. In the stead of this great stuff was some sort of "made-for-cable" goofy monster movie. Now, I did not hate it, (I actually like goofy monster movies) but it is not begging me to watch it again. It's so in-your-face that after one viewing, there was nothing left to see. No mystery. No subtlety. No sense of future dread. It was done.

But wow! Gamers really like it!! Now it all makes sense. Since I find shooter games extremely redundant and difficult to play more than once, I found this movie to be the same. A one timer (OK maybe 2). Kind of like sixth sense. Once you get to the end, well.. ...it's over.

Cinematically, comparing this to the fist film is like comparing the first "Star Wars" to the last (I'm talking release dates, not "Lucas-Time"). It's comparing something that is a carfully thought out and woven tale, to something that is simply a series of evens strung together to make a story. Kind of like Shooter video games. You travel down a linear path and take on what's in front of you. Unfortunatly this is a film!

I can't say don't buy this if you liked the first. It's nice to have a continuation of the first. Just don't go in with the same expectations.

Problematic sequel.......2007-01-27

The Umbrella Corporation decided to reopen the Hive, which allows the T-virus to escape and turn the inhabitants of Raccoon City into zombies. I might be slow when it comes to modern science, but I really fail to see the practical applications or economic potential of the T-virus given that it is not really regeneration human cells. Now the nuke option is making a lot of sense, which is bad news for Alice (Milla Jovovich), the genetically created ultimate fighting machine, who is trying to lead a group of survivors through the zombies to safety. But since this movie is based on a video game, things get worse.

The Umbrella Corporation sends Nemesis, a killing machine that may or may not be a genetically mutated version of Alice's boyfriend, Matt, from the previous film. Apparently shooting people before nuking them is in the best interest of the corporation.

This is a movie that really does not have much respect for the intelligence of its audience, all of whom would know to shot zombies wearing body armor in the head. At least the movie makes the videogames look really good in comparison, so there is that. You just have to be into playing the games.

Not Your Typical Dull Horror Remake.......2007-06-26

When the opening credits are played over a backdrop of apocalyptic zombie carnage and set to Johnny Cash's "When the Man Comes Around," you know you're not dealing with another dull horror remake. This version actually matches (if not surpasses) the original. True, it drops the satirical angle of the original, using the mall as a set-piece instead of an indictment of consumer culture--blasphemy for Romero fans, but not entirely missed by anyone else.

If you enjoyed Zack Snyder's more recent work (the movie "300"), "Dawn of the Dead" will certainly provide you with some additional visceral thrills.

Decent update on the old zombie film.......2007-06-14

Based in Millwaukee, this film is a non stop thrill ride. Zombies popping out of all places. This movie starts right out from start to finish with non stop thrills, and pretty good special effets. I was not expecting much when I cought this flipping through the movie channels, but I found myself watching it all the way through. Simple to follow, suspenseful enough, worth a rental, or even a purchase.

Dawn of the Dead 1978:

* The blood and gore are MORE SICKLY AND BETTER on this one.
* The zombies are more creepy by walking slow and NOT running.
* There is MORE action and gore on this one.
* The movie here is longer.
* The videogames scene was very cool.
* The ending is more suspensful here.

Dawn of the Dead 2004:

* The budget is better.
* The acting is better.
* The made up baby zombie scene is CREEPY.
* The are a little more celebrities on this one.
* The zombie make up is MUCH BETTER!
* The blood and gore are more graphic here but less cool.
* The concept here is a little bit better.

To my conclution, the 1978 version is the CLASSIC and MUCH BETTER version of the two. This one is entertaining but not so cool, you can watch it but please don't buy it!

You've all heard about Dawn Of The Dead (1979), and you also heard that in this version "the first 15-20 minutes were good....". I'm here to protest on that quote. Yes, it's true that the first 15-20 minutes was good and creepy. And it's true that most of the movie were about people camping out in the mall. But most zombie killing were about the last 40 minutes. But the movie never explained about the disease and how it all started. "28 Days Later" wasn't really a zombie movie, but it explained about the disease. I gave this 4 out of 5 for 3 reasons....... one is when the part the father of the red-head chick was shot, everyone started having thrills and playing around, and that stupid song played. Second reason is that there weren't enough killing parts. Third reason is, there were 16 people in the movie but only 1 person got killed in a small crowd of undead. All the rest of the people started turning into zombies, and some people started killing each other for stupid reasons. And 2 guys were being eatened but died before getting killed by the zombies. The tough security guy that was part bald and sweared a lot was my favorite character. I have one last question, what happened to the blonde girl's husband after he turned into a zombie? He was the husband of the main character, we could've at least seen him getting killed. Another question is why did the military pass the survivors? Were they blind?

Things that could improve this movie:
1. Show military fighting against the zombies.
2. Show more characters being eatened by the huge crowd of zombies.
3. More sex.

Look at the bright side, they have really good graphics! They should try to make a second one!

Dr. Bowles's boat floats into New York Harbor missing its crew and carrying an undead passenger. The doctor's daughter (Tisa Farrow), dead set on finding out what happened to her father, teams up with journalist Peter West (Ian McCulloch) and heads to the cursed island of Matool, where a zombie epidemic is growing and Dr. Bowles's friend, Dr. Menard (Richard Johnson), is desperately trying to find a cure. Will Anne find her father? Will Dr. Menard find a cure? Will our heroes escape? In all honesty, who really cares? Because those in the "know" already know you don't come to a Fulci film looking for Shakespeare. What Zombi 2 lacks in plot development and continuity, it more than makes up for in atmosphere, intensity, and of course the trademark Fulci gore. Some of the unique high points are the never-duplicated zombie-versus-shark vignette, the rising of the Spanish zombie conquistadores, and Fulci's trademark eye shot. Not deep, but fun zombie classic.......2007-06-12

This is one of my favorite zombie movies. It's just fun. Whereas Dawn of the Dead [which this is supposed to be the Italian sequel to] has real characters and motivations and you feel like you're watching something put together with a greater plan in mind, here you feel like you're watching something with just the efficient delivery of thrills in mind.

The movie opens with a scene that successfully creeped me out: an abandoned boat drifts into New York Harbor. There's a zombie aboard who bites of a police officer. The boat belonged to Tisa Farrow's [Mia's sister], father. So Tisa has to go down to the Carribean to look for him, and she brings along this reporter she's hooked up with, and they hire a boat from this bearded blond sensitive 70s hunk and his girlfriend.

There's lots of mumbo-jumbo about the island being cursed and a strange illness going around the island, but finally they get near [the movie DOES take its time getting going] the island and the showstopping set pieces start. The first is a battle between shark and zombie--less exciting in reality than it sounds, though still cool, and gaining redemptive points just for the IDEA.

I also got a creepy frisson out of the moment when the freaked-out snorkeler [Auetta Gay] comes up from the deep and says "There was a MAN down there!" The idea of underwater zombies is ripped off in the execrable House of the Dead.

There's another notorious scene a few minutes later, after they're reached the island, and the good doctor Menard asks them to go in and check on his wife. Unfortunately the wife is already zombie chow, but first they speared her eye on a wooden shard. Obviously this is gory, and has lots of fans, but it kind of bugs me... why would a zombie want to do that? It kind of took me out of the movie. But they make up for it a few minutes later when the body is found, and the zombies are just quietly feasting on her organs as though at a relaxing picnic [with attendant slurpy sounds].

This movie also features the famous convention of standing there utterly stupefied for five minutes while a zombie slowly, slowly, slowly shuffles over to you and takes a bite out of your neck.

It all builds to an exciting climax in a burning hospital, and featured some effectively creepy shots leading up to then. It ends on a note that has become somewhat of a cliché [and probably was one then], but you expect it by that time. All around, a great, gory, lighthearted and fun zombie movie.

Classic video nasty gets a well deserved touch-up.......2007-05-18

Fulci is synonymous throughout his film making and within the horror community for his stark (and very sadistic) vision of intensely gory and horrific imagery and Zombi 2 (known as Zombie Flesh Eaters over here) is no acceptation.

I remember the first time I saw this film on Channel 4 (a gore weekend if I remember) and how much it differed from Romero's trilogy. For starters, the zombie effects (in my opinion) are much creepier and therefore better. The music, although slightly grating, gives the film a real "atmosfear" and intensifies the ominous presence of the walking dead which gave me the occasional chill down my spine to see those things slowly rising from the grave (the Conquistadores scene) and walking about so.

I bought this film under the possible hope for a better picture and sound and it has not disappointed. This DVD DOES has improved picture and sound quality (although it's a shame it cannot improve dubbing acting, but it's still low-budget) with all the gore scenes intact and in brighter detail, I found this to be much better than the release we have over here. Which kind-of leaves me wondering why it is only available to America and not for the rest of us Europeans, it is after all a European film.

This film is a horror cult-classic and it is good to see that such care has been put into restoring it. The extras are OK, but nothing worth shouting about, but I did like the free poster you get with it. Well worth the buy and a good addition to a zombie collection.

Si te gusta el gore, esta película es para ti. A pocos minutos del comienzo ya posee una escena bien hecha. Todo se desarrolla en Nueva York y en una isla llamada Matul, donde se esconden los secretos de los zombies y de la desaparición del padre de la protagonista. Esta película no es continuación ni antelación de Dawn of the Dead, simplemente es otro film con una explicación de cómo los zombies podrían llegar a USA. Hay un ambiente de suspenso constante, que en varios momentos se convierte en horror con buenos efectos de maquillaje. La banda sonora es buena. Una obra indispensable de Lucio Fulci.

Awesome Film.......2007-04-05

This film was a real winner. Again, had that "Grind house" feel type movie and sure enough, you can see why this movie tried to cash in on the "Dawn of the Dead"(old version) buzz of the 70s...very cool zombie flick and the best i've seen in some time. Highly Recommended!

Zombi 2's Easter Egg Revealed!.......2007-03-20

Okay, let's be brief: If you didn't grow up in the horror lovin' 80's or are not an established fan of Italian horror films, this movie probably won't work for you. This is the unofficial sequel to Romero's "Dawn Of The Dead" (the 1978 version of course) made primary for Italian audiences when Dawn was released there under the title of "Zombi". Even though this one doesn't take place in a mall or feature anything or anyone like the original storyline of Dawn, it does have almost the same feel. Eventually in America, this film came to us with English dubbed audio under the title of "Zombie". But now Shriek Show has finally released a remastered 2 disc set of this classic movie fully uncut for the first time in the states.

Or so I thought.

Ya see, when the movie starts, there's a brief scene set-up (as it always was), then it goes into the opening credits. I was expecting to see the original Italian credits showing it finally under it's original title "Zombi 2", like the box. But it isn't, it's the American version with the title "Zombie". Nitpicking, huh? But after a little searching I found an Easter Egg that shows that original title sequence that finally shows that this film was called "Zombi 2". Here's how to get to it (it's easy....):

On Disc One go to the "Features" section. In there, press the number "6" on your remote. It will activate a red skull button in the upper right on the screen (you CAN'T activate it by searching around the menu with your arrow buttons, very rare by Easter Egg standards!), and it will press the button automatically and take you to the original Italian opening credits and clearly show that this film was called "Zombi 2", logo and all. Also, after they're done, it will show an alternate end credits, but honestly I couldn't see any difference on them as opposed to the ones on the movie now.

All in all, this movie has never looked or sounded better ever. Some say it's looks too cleaned up now. They might have a point because the picture is so perfect now (colors bright, sharp image, brightness exact, sound crisp, etc) that it gives away the effects in the movie. Well, I'd rather have this movie perfect picture than a dark, grainy VHS anyday.

This movie is a classic piece of horror history and should be owned (especially the Shriek Show 25th Anniversary version...the extras here are superior....the making of documentary is as long as the movie itself!) by anyone with two or more "Living Dead/Zombie" DVD's already in their collection. I'm glad I got it, THIS is the way classic horror should be re-released.

P.S.: If you look hard enough (the DVD's trailer section has their previews), there is a "Zombi 3" and a "Zombie 4" movies out there too. Trust me, you don't need them or want them, as they don't have the same feel or quality of "Zombi 2" or "Dawn Of The Dead". Just be happy with their trailers. Enjoy!

If You Love Metal..........2007-06-12

If you're a metalhead, and obviously you are, you won't regret giving a couple hours to this great documentary, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. This is probably the most fun I've ever had watching a documentary, and I love documentaries. The trouble is, most are depressing and tragic. "Metal" is anything but.
I know hardcore metal fans like myself will love this flick, but I also think the casual fan will be just as in to it. It's well paced, comprehensive without being exhaustive, and touches on almost every subject/ band you'd hope for. My only personal let down is that Pantera and Dimebag (R.I.P.) aren't given more than a graphic on the metal- family tree (nor Metallica, Anthrax, Testament, or Sepultura for that matter...)
But hey, I'm nitpickin'. Sam Dunn's journey is one that will resonate deeply with any heavy metal fan. The interviews are absorbing, the editing and pacing are spot on, and Dunn's own passion for the subject really shine through the length of the film.
Rob Zombie's bits are classic, by the way. "You never meet a kid who's like "Yeah, I was into Slayer for that ONE summer..."
I give it a 4.5, (and I haven't even seen the "bonus disc," woo hoo!)

Death metal mom.......2007-05-25

WOW. I saw this for the firs time the other day. Sam does an amazing job. Being a mid 20's woman I would have loved to have heard more about women in the metal scene but overall this is THE best documentary I have ever seen. Where I will always love my hardcore, thrash, and deathmetal the best, I have a new appreciation for all metal.

the heart of metal.......2007-04-19

Oh this is a great film. Hats off to Sam Dunn for not only tackling such a difficult genre but doing it in a way most metalheads can relate to whilst also intelligently (and politely too) crafting a story of his own life, the landscape of heavy metal and its honest great points and awful points.

A lot of ground is covered in this film. Someone else mentioned they could watch 10 hours of this and I agree. This could be made into a TV series and explore metal in even more detail. Sam constructs this awesome chart catagorizing all the types metal and their place in metal's family tree.

Ronnie Dio took a liking to Sam Dunn and I can see why. He's not your heavy set, dumb full of attitude headbanger - he's the guy we are or knew at school - that simply loves music and knows how to dig into the facades of different stories.

The interview with Dee Snider is a classic. They cover an important aspect of heavy metal I have never understood myself which is why tough men like to dress up like women in metal...the most masculine and brave thing you can do!

This is a must have film if you are a fan, like interesting documentaries or even just a lover of music.

Great Documentary, for metal fans or Historians.......2007-03-18

This is filmed by a metal fan who is an anthrapology major, and done in a very tasteful manor. I have watched this several times over on VH1, and it is still worth owning the DVD because of the bonus stuff. Done in a way to uncover the basis of metal, then follows it through to today in a relatively in depth timeline. On top of that, they go into the different genres and devolop more of what it is to be thrash, black, hard rock, hardcore, death ect... With a flurry of guests and legends (including Dio, Tom Arya, and Bruce Dickenson for beginners) This is one to place right up there with the decline of western civilization part 2, the metal years. Pick this up, you will like it. Pair this with the book "the encyclepedia of metal" or "sounds of the beast" books, and you will have a plethera of history at your hands.

What is metal rock? Ask ten people and you will get ten different answers. Since Little Richard hit the billboard in the 1950's, rock has "suffered the slings and arrows" from churches, citizens groups and even the media. Basically, rock was ignored in the mainstream media for years, unless there was some kind of scandal or tragedy. It made it's way into a few periodicals (Rolling Stone, Creem, Hit Parader) and late night shows (The Midnight Special, SNL) in the seventies, but there was no real coverage as a whole. The lack of interest combined with the images, antics, and some supernatural overtones made the subject more obscured. This documentary is one of a few that actually looks at a portion of the genre with respect, factual information and practicality and I loved it!
Mr. Morello takes the approach of the college thesis and although he uses his own opinions to categorize the bands, of which many I do not agree with, the concept is a brilliant way to expand the subject as a whole. He interviews some of the greatest metal artists of our time and gets some frank and rumor dispelling information. Without giving too much away, he approaches the subject of the image as opposed to the reality and although true fans know the truth, it is refreshing to see it on the screen and documented. He travels through several countries to investigate, and with the exception of one nordic based band and the hate genre overall, he could not find anything truly sinister or revolting beyond image. It is worth the money for that alone. I only gave it four stars because I felt the film lacked balance by excluding the more popular bands with the exception of Cooper and Dio, et al. For this to be a solid investigation, adequate attention needed to be paid to all categories. All in all highly recommend for fans!
Metaldiva Sez: Metal fan essential. Get it home and enjoy the demystification of a much loved and followed rock genre. Mr. Morello gives substance to the teeth and growl of metal.. Loved it!!
