First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets passes with flying colors. Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by Sorcerer's Stone director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart's expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack of depth and uneven pacing, and John Williams' score mostly reprises established themes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as does the late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor, Chamber honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling's novels. --Jeff Shannon

Amazon.com essential video
Fractured fairy tales of a darker hue provide the remarkable context for Into the Woods, which deconstructs the Brothers Grimm by way of Rod Serling. While the faces and names are familiar, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and company inhabit a sylvan neighborhood in which witches and bakers are next-door neighbors, handsome princes from once-parallel fables are competitive (and equally vain) brothers, and all the stories intersect through unexpected new plot twists.
Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning score favors intricate ensemble numbers that present the characters' divergent, then overlapping fears and desires. And it's the latter category that provides a primary thread to James Lapine's ingenious puzzle of a book, which coheres around the inevitability--and treachery--of our innermost wishes. That theme is given farcical energy in the first act, which offers enough comic invention, tart dialogue, and witty music for a satisfying evening of theater as is.
Instead, Sondheim and Lapine offer a bold, darker second act that takes a look at what happens after "happily ever after," elevating the work beyond inspired parody toward allegorical gravity. By the final scenes, with the one-two punch of the score's two most enduring songs, "No One Is Alone" and "Children Will Listen," what began as a clever diversion has touched deeper nerves and primed some tear ducts. This video production by the original Broadway cast gets its marquee shimmer from Bernadette Peters's wonderful witch, but the standout (and Tony winner as Best Actress) is Joanna Gleason, who gives the Baker's Wife a mixture of warmth, pragmatism, and sudden, poignantly romantic radiance.
The DVD version is comparatively no-frills, given its American Playhouse origins, but multiformat digital audio renders the musical performances in immaculate detail. --Sam Sutherland

Description
A baker and his wife journey into the woods in search of a cow, a red cape, a pair of golden slippers and some magic beans to lift a curse that has kept them childless. Tony Award winners Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason and the rest of the original Broadway cast weave their magic spell over you in Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece, directed by James Lapine, a seamless fusion of fairy tale characters and what happens after "happily ever after. "With oft-recorded songs such as "Children Will Listen" and "No One is Alone," "Into the Woods" is a music lover's delight from start to finish--and will forever cement Stephen Sondheim's unparalleled position as the giant of the American musical theater.

Staid, secure publisher James Stewart leads a quiet life until he meets his bewitching downstairs neighbor, Kim Novak. John Van Druten's lighthearted Broadway comedy becomes a lush if lightweight romantic vehicle for Stewart and Novak, who would reunite for Hitchcock's Vertigo the next year. Novak is at her best as a Greenwich witch halfway between the worlds of magic and mortals, looking after her dotty aunt (Elsa Lanchester) and mischievous warlock brother (Jack Lemmon) as they keep their skills in practice. Novak's specialty is making men fall for her, but it's a one-way street: when a witch falls in love, she loses her powers. Director Richard Quine gives the witches an almost beatnik sensibility, a real Greenwich Village subculture hanging out in underground clubs and smart curio shops. Elegantly photographed in rich, glowing colors by James Wong Howe, Bell, Book and Candle is a fantasy world in New York set to a funky bongo-laced jazz score by George Duning. Quine's gliding camera is somewhat marred by abrupt editing, but his handling of actors is superb, in particular Novak, whose mysterious beauty masks inner turmoil and romantic yearnings. Ernie Kovacs appears as a wry author whose specialty is the supernatural, and Hermione Gingold is suitably florid as a witch elder with a penchant for theatricality. For once in his life Stewart is actually upstaged by the slyly comic performances around him. --Sean Axmaker

The innate connection between twins is a strange but very real phenomenon, so it's no surprise that when 21-year old twins Camryn (Tamera Mowry) and Alex (Tia Mowry) bump into one other in a clothing shop, they feel an instant connection with one another even though they were separated at birth. What is a surprise is that the two girls are really powerful witches from another dimension who were spirited away to escape the destructive force known as the "Darkness." Kept safe for the last 21 years by two quirky protectors Karsh and Ileana, the girls are now destined to combine their respective gifts of sight and knowing with their newly discovered magical powers in order to save their own mother and her entire dimension from the invading Darkness. The biggest difficulties for the girls prove to be learning to trust in themselves and their powers, agreeing upon their combined role in the fight, and focusing their powers against the Darkness. Based on the book The Power of Two, this 86-minute Disney Channel Original Movie features a convincing and enthusiastic performance by Disney Channel's Sister, Sister stars Tia and Tamara Mowry and some other-worldly special effects. Bonus features include brief behind the scenes commentary by Tia and Tamara Mowry, a never-before-seen alternate ending, and an interactive fortune-telling game. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Better to read the books.......2007-02-17
So poorly did the movie portray these excellent books that my daughter and I were unable to even watch the entire movie. I would recomend ignoring the movie and buying the books instead.
Go twitches, go twitches.......2007-01-29
I am a fan of Disney Movies such as this; although this one didn't please me as much as others. The special effects were on average, low quality and the storyline was a bit lame.
Great family movie!.......2007-01-12

Product Description
Oscar®-winner Nicole Kidman (Best Actress in a leading role, The Hours, 2002) and wickedly funny Will Ferrell star as actors playing Darrin and Samantha on a remake of the television show "Bewitched" in this cleverly crafty comedy from director Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail). Egomaniacal star Jack Wyatt (Ferrell) casts unknown Isabel (Kidman) as his co-star in order to monopolize the limelight and regain his top spot on Hollywood's A-list. When Isabel, a real witch, discovers Jack's self-centered scheme, she conjures a sidesplitting spell the mere mortal will never forget!

As one of many in the ongoing trend of resurrecting old TV shows and turning them into contemporary Hollywood product, Bewitched tries awfully hard to distinguish itself. It succeeds in lots of surprising ways, not least of which is the star power brought by Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. Even if they don't create the kind of romantic chemistry that would have elevated the already high concept, they act as delightful foils to each other, but more often to themselves. The conceit of this Bewitched is that it's a self-reflexive look at the entertainment business, with Ferrell playing Jack Wyatt, an actor starring in an updated version of the classic TV show. Out of favor with the Hollywood elite and desperately in need of a hit, he insists on an unknown to play Samantha, as he wants the show to be about him, since if something doesn't come his way soon, he's going to be hearing a lot of no's, despite the yes-men surrounding him. While his agent (Jason Schwartzman in hilarious high Hollywood sleaze mode) gets him the "unknown Samantha" deal, it's Jack himself who discovers his own leading lady in the delightful figure of Isabel Bigalow (Kidman), who possesses just the right nose wiggle, not to mention other wiggles.
But wouldn't you know it, Isabel really is a witch, and exactly the kind of "good" witch trying to rely less on her magical powers that Samantha Stevens was back in her "real" world. Instead of a cranky mother like Endora, Isabel has a distinguished father, Nigel (Michael Caine) who lurks around her as a constant reminder that she can't be who she's not (a mere mortal), and she certainly can't be the star of some zany TV show. As the plot thickens and the movie's reflexivity grows more convoluted, Nigel falls for the non-witch actress who plays Endora (Shirley MacLaine), and Jack and Isabel fall for each other. Here's where the Ferrell/Kidman gel doesn't quite become aspic, but her perkiness (I mean, come on, it is Nicole Kidman, for crying out loud) and his goofiness (Ferrell is at his peak of intelligent bumbling) are more than enough to make the entirety of the proceedings a delectable trifle. Director Nora Ephron has fun skewering her own business in the script she co-wrote with her sister Delia, and her eye for quality craft makes everything sparkle as it should. Even if we have yet to see the definitive remake of an old TV show on the big screen, at least Bewitched is well more than run-of-the-mill as so many adaptations have been, and so many will be. --Ted Fry
Customer Reviews:
Where art tho dog?! I shall lick your snout ... (umm ... my favorite line in the movie).......2007-06-18
I've seen this film so many times and finally made the plunge and purchased it and absolutely love it! While it does contain a major cheese factor (a movie about making a TV re-make of Bewitched ... c'mon), it's so incredibly cute and funny! Are Nicole & Will a slightly odd pairing? Maybe so, but I think that's the sheer brilliance of it. The characters are delightful and they deliver a whole lot of laughs -- whats not to love about it?!
RUN! FLEE!.......2007-06-16
There are not enough expletives in the English language to describe just how awful this circular piece of trash is. Use it as a small frisbee. You will get more enjoyment out of it.
Inspired by the popular television, "Bewitched" sports some big names, and completely squanders their talent, (which is not insignificant). The fact that people like Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell, Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine could not lift this foul stench of a movie above the cesspit of mediocrity should sound warning bells to all and sundry.
This movie succeeded in putting me off anything with Will Ferrell in it for a very long time, (I am still in therapy and dealing with deep emotional scarring). Only now have I started to give his movies a chance, and enjoy them.
Basically, avoid this movie. Find a blackboard and run your fingernails down it. You will enjoy yourself a whole lot more.
Bewitched has been bestunk.......2007-06-08
will ferell is pretty funny in this movie, but the whole idea was stupid, they shoul've made a movie based on the show not the way they did it. I agree that it's a new take but in my oppinion it didn't fly very well. and they made nicole kidmans character to stupid. well thats all.
Surprisingly Good!.......2007-06-07
I'm not a big fan of either Will Farrell or Nicole Kidman, but I love this movie! It's a really clever twist on the series Bewitched, paying a nice homage without trying to recreate it. Farrell and Kidman have a fairly good on-screen chemistry (no sizzle, but not bad) but they play off each other really well. Michael Caine and Shirley McClain are great (what else could they be) and the other minor characters are original and hysterical.
My only slight downside - Kidman's Isabel looks amazing similar to Meg Ryan's Kathleen Kelley in You've Got Mail (I think the score is actually the same at times!). Not surprising, since Nora Ephron directed both, and they are both charming in both roles.
Nice, light, clever, feel good movie!
What sixth grader dreamed up this plot?.......2007-06-03
I don't want to insult sixth graders, but this movie was strictly grade school stuff. Not only did it not pay homage to the TV series, it seemed like an insult to it. Characters were not funny or likable. This film was boring and predictable. I gave it 2 stars because I made it through the whole thing although I'm not sure how.

Snow White - A Tale of Terror.......2007-05-09
It's dark and has an interesting take on the classic story. Though the back story of Snow's love interest was lacking, it's still a keeper.
Snow's love interest ... I like to think that he was the son of a noble family, and his parents had opinions that others didn't agree with, which is why they were attacked.
Sigourney rocks in Snow White.......2007-02-08
Snow White as it was meant to be. Signourney and Sam are at their best in this dark and scary rendition of Snow White. Not for the faint of heart.
Sogornweve Fans.......2007-01-10
this movie is not ment for the kids this movie is ment for the adults. but let me tell you this is one movie that will knock your socks right off. injoy the movie and go and grab this movie before its too late. buy it for your collection. all thumbs up for this movie. and the twist of it all is a fair tall that you have not seen in you life time. its great for the adult but again not for the kids. tks.
Quite a different tale!.......2006-09-04
Sigourney Weaver was PERFECT as the evil stepmother. You know this from the very start, when she is first introduced in the movie. No, it's not a fairytale for kiddies, but if you like horror - you will like this version.
dark and twisted fairy tale.......2006-07-08
Based on the classic fairytale with a darker twist. A little girl's father remarries a nasty step mother. The step mother tries to have her killed and girl is forced to flee. She gets lost into he forest and stumbles across some guys who take her in. The step mother finds her and tricks her into eating an apple. Later she is awakened by "prince charming" ......and then returns to face her stepmother.
Very good movie with Sigourney Weaver, a beautiful dresser, and zombie-like servants. The "dwarves" were turned into a band of runaway criminals (with unfair convictions). Behind it all there is a little bit of romance, a little bit of suspense and some general creepiness.
Up until the middle, the movie presents the tale with a realistic twist in the sense that the step mother does not have supernatural powers. At first it seems like she just went insane and paranoid. The step mother miscarries a child, which gives her a mental break where she starts talking to mirrors and accusing everyone of conspiracy, etc.
Around this time, the movie goes down a little and they spin it into the typical fantasy/witchcraft tale. As it turns out, the step mother does possess magical powers that she uses against snow white. This in itself isn't too terrible because that's how the well-known story goes. However, I found it a little disappointing because I think it would have been ten times better if they kept going on the realistic side.

Curses?Wow!.......2007-02-28
For once,a movie that can prove you dont have to go on a diet to be thin.Robert John Burke plays Billy Halleck,an overweight lawyer who makes the mistake of hitting an old gypsy woman during a little pleasurable activity.LOL. However, when he is found not guilty,a curse is put upon him.Soon,he finds that he is rapidly losing weight and discovers he has a gypsy curse on him. With the help of his friend,Richie,he sets out to find the gypsy who put the curse on him, before he is permenently thin. I recommend this film to any Stephen King fan
"come on, I insist...white doctor from town".......2006-07-15
I must say, I really enjoyed this movie. We all know that most, if not all book based movies are not as good as the book. Stephen King movies are a good example of that. But, unlike movies such as The Tommyknockers or The Golden Years, Thinner is one of the better book based movies by King. First off, I really enjoyed the cast, especially Joe Mantegna. The evil old Gypsy (depending on what point of view or "side" your on) is especially creepy because he seems so ruthless. Tom Holland, who plays the main character as the cursed man who seems to be growing "Thinner", did a great job fulfilling his role.
Also, I must say that the production team of this movie really made Tom Holland's character look extremely convincing, mentally and physically.
In conclusion, This movie is extremely creepy and seems as if it's possible in real life, because it's simply a curse/hex that is at play throughout the movie. It has nothing to do with Aliens, mythical creatures, Ghost's etc. I highly recommend this movie to everyone, even if you aren't a horror fan, you should give this movie a chance.
the title says it all.......2006-06-21
never before has a movie had such an apt title as this mess. the plot is as thin as the main person in the movie gets. just really a waste of time and money for me,i thought! skip this mess!!!
Well I liked it..........2004-02-25
Let me just start of by saying that I am a huge fan of both stephen kings, and horror movies. This however really isn't scary. However it did have a few scary parts. just be warned: this is not your average stephen king movie...but its still really good.
By the way...why do people give movies bad ratings if they have crappy special features? I don't know about everyone else, but I buy my movies for the movie, not for the extra stuff!
PRETTY BIG TO BE THIN:c).......2004-02-04
Enjoyed the movie. Teaches everyone to never underestimate anything someone else is capable of... especially if you don't know them.
