Ah, where to start??? After creating life, Baron Frankenstein is murdered by his hideous creation that heads off to kill those people who were involved in its resurrection, or who are simply in the way. The baron's daughter, Tania, who has just arrived from university with the help of his lab assistant, decides to go on and continue with her father's work. To keep the high reputation of the family name and to satisfy her lustful needs. Tania seductively plans to create a perfect being with the brains of her fellow assistant and the body of the slow-witted servant.

"I am, my father's daughter". She sure is! And a whole lot more! This sleazy Frankenstein imitation (of Hammer's "The Horror of Frankenstein") is beyond warped with its kinky fixations with seedy sex and red paint jobs (gore, of course) within its highly Gothic surroundings, inspires this cheap Italian exploitation picture. Albeit at times quite nonsensical and melodramatic, at least it gave the mad doctor theme a huge revamp with its lewd nature and having a female protagonist who was in supreme control with her manipulative prowess. This refreshing twist was one of the few neat additions to this rough around the edges, but above-average production. Director Mel Welles shuffles around some assured moments of suspense, array of blinding images and builds upon the morbidly vivid atmosphere. Not to mention the creeping sound effects and crazy yet some what nagging music score really made it seem cheesier, but in a good way. The make-up effects were simply okay with the ghastly looking monster going on to aimlessly cause havoc like they mostly do in these stories.

When it came to the performances, one can only say they were quite laboured, despite a few decent turns. The very appealing Rosalba Neri grafts away with her conniving and forcefully voluptuous personality. She was quite hypnotic in the role and looked the part of Tania Frankenstein. Joseph Cotten gives the flick a steady head for the short time he's in it and Herbert Fux makes a more than a good impression as Tom Lynch the grave robber. The raw to-the-bone story and script aren't typically the best with their telegraphed patterns, but it lifted when it needed to by showing how much Tania has taken a shine to her father's aspiring work and there were hardly any dull spots.

"Lady Frankenstein" is an entertainingly tainted exercise on someone who cherishes what they do.

I admit that I'm not a big fan of Frankenstein. The idea of a mad scientist creating a living human creature from spare body parts of corpses never fascinated me. Over the years I've seen various Frankenstein films or, at least, clips and the story just never did anything for me. That is, until I recently saw the 1971 Italian film "Lady Frankenstein" starring Rosalba Neri (AKA Sara Bey) in the title role of Tania Frankenstein, the beautiful daughter of Baron Frankenstein.

So what sets "Lady Frankenstein" apart from all the other Frankenstein incarnations? Well, the film starts out as a standard Frankenstein flick with Dr. Frankenstein and his assistant Charles Marshall trying to create life from the body parts of recently dead corpses. A new element is introduced in this story and that, as expected, is Frankenstein's daughter Tania. Tania has just graduated medical school as a surgeon and reveals to her father and Charles that she knows what they're trying to achieve and wants to assist them in their gruesome work. Before they agree to her partnership they successfully give life to a hideous monster. The monster kills Dr. Frankenstein and proceeds to go on a killing spree in the country-side.

Meanwhile Tania and Charles come up with a mad scheme to create another "monster" that will have the same super stength necessary to slay the original creature that murdered Tania's father. Ultimately it is revealed that Charles profoundly loves Tania, even though he's much older than her. Tania admits that she loves Charles' mind but he's physically too old and feeble to stir her carnal passions. Their insane answer to this predicament is to murder the local retarded hunk and replace his brain with Charles'!! Only then will Tania have her cake and eat it too -- the perfect brain with the perfect body!

As you can see, "Lady Frankenstein" takes the done-to-death Frankenstein story and gives it a much-needed new twist, a highly intriguing twist, I might add. Even though this is so, the film would have failed if it didn't have the right person in the titular role. All I can say is Rosalba Neri (credited as Sara Bey) is magnificent as Tania Frankenstein. It's more than just her obvious physical beauty, highlighted by those big cat-like eyes, it's the utter passion and seriousness she puts into the role. Tania fully realizes the womanly power she holds and expertly utilizes it to easily put Charles into a love-trance so profound that he's actually willing to have his brain transplanted for her. I would have done the same thing, of course; what red-blooded man could possibly resist her?

The American version is only 85 minutes, cut down from the original 96 minutes. I'm gonna be on the look out for the longer version, but the 85 minute version is fine as is. Trust me, Rosalba is fully shown in all her luscious glory in this short version. Interestingly, even though this is so, the film powerfully illustrates that sexuality and true beauty are far more than a matter of simply showing skin as Rosalba expertly oozes beauty and sensuality in every blink, eye movement, word and motion!

In addition, you get everything else you'd ever want in a Frankenstein picture -- sincere but sincerely mad "scientists," dungeons, monsters on the rampage, beautiful damsels, horse-drawn carriages and torch-carrying village mobs out for blood.

Make no mistake, this is a powerful horror film about the insanity of obsession (for achievement, honor, love, loyalty, lust, money and revenge) and its consequences. It's as good or better than just about any Hammer film. I should add that "Lady Frankenstein" is not goofy, campy or comedic as the cover art of some of the DVDs would suggest; this is a serious take on the Frankenstein story. Highly recommended.

Tormented Review.......2007-01-02

I purchased this double feature a few years ago mainly for Lady Frankenstein and buried it away. Going through my DVD collection years later, I realized I never saw Tormented and decided to give it a viewing. The most interesting detail is that I did not fall asleep while viewing (must be all the coffee). The plot was pretty dull. Carlson kills his former jealous girlfriend at a lighthouse and is pursued by her ghost throughout the rest of the film. He is then plagued by cheesy special effects as he attempts to prepare for his wedding. Throw in some bribery and suspicious family members of the bride and you pretty much get the idea. Not many good laughs in this one except for a disembodied head yelling at the main character on occasion. Great idea for the DVD setup includes drive-in commercials and movie previews wedged between the two films. However, the image quality is poor, but for the cheap price it's not a bad deal. If you are just buying this for Lady Frankenstein, you may want to investigate other options.

Creative Take on Frankenstein .......2005-11-18

Lady Frankenstein comes off as one of the most creative if not the best retellings of the done-to-death Frankenstein theme committed to film thus far. It also stars one of the best actors who ever played the role of Baron Dr. Frankenstein, Joseph Cotten.

The Lady Frankenstein in this movie is the daughter of Baron Dr. Frankeinstein, Tania (Rosalba Neri). She comes home after graduating from medical school with her head filled with all sorts of "radical ideas." Among other things, she had engaged in unauthorized experiments involving human tissue and transplants. She is determined to assist her father in his experiments.

However, her father rebuffs her and ably assisted by his non-hunchbacked assistant, Dr. Charles Marshall (Paul Muller), he creates his monster. Frankenstein's plans go awry as the unexpected side effects of the electric shock aspect of his creative process results in a homicidal monster. The monster turns on its creator and kills him and then escapes the castle and spreads fear, havoc and ultimately, death in the surrounding countryside. Compounding matters, Police Captain Harris (Mickey Hargitay) is energetically pursuing any and all leads into the investigation of Frankenstein's death. This includes the possiblity that the monster that has been systematically killing folks off is linked to the late mad scientist Frankenstein in some way.

This situation presents a challenge for Frankenstein's young daughter. She proves herself to be worthy of the Frankenstein name by concocting an insane scheme to right the situation. Her idea is to take the brain of the laboratory assistant, who is deeply in love with her, and transplant it into the body of the handsome but mentally retarded servant. This new creation would then go forth into the wild and kill the monster and afterwards provide Tania with a suitable mate. The lab assistant is surprisingly agreeable to the bizarre scheme and after a surprisingly easy laboratory operation, the deed is done. The sharp mind of the lab assistant and the muscular body of the retarded servant are now one and the same.

The most striking aspect of this film is the atmosphere which makes you feel as though you were living in that very village and castle, among those people many of whom has something to hide. This movie features very good acting, in particular Paul Muller as the lab assistant, Rosalba Neri in the title role and, of course, Joseph Cotten as the Baron Doctor Frankenstein.

Lady Frankenstein is as much a tale about obsession, the insane things you will do for love, the risks you will take for money, the games people play with authorities and a complex morality play as a traditional Frankenstein picture, this movie deserves to be recognized. As such, Lady Frankenstein is a movie that is very much worth your time.

Oh my heavens! Yeah, this is another Frankenstein retread. However, the Lady herself (Sarah Bay) is my only reason for watching this movie! Yes, Joseph Cotton is doc Frankenstein. Yes, he makes a creature out of a corpse, it goes on a killing rampage, blah-blah-blah! Who cares?? My sole concern was Ms. Bay and her.... er, talents! I mean, she is sizzling hot anyway, but when the clothes fly off, things like plot, characters, etc. become irrelevent! I'd let her take out my brain too! So yes, there's some mad science gone wrong, but I hardly noticed! I do remember the monster looking like a bad halloween costume. I also recall Lynch, the bodysnatcher who supplies Dr. Frankenstein w/ corpses. Other than that, you're on your own. Did I mention Sarah Bay? Excuse me, I need a cold drink! Highly recommended for soft-core euro-horror / schlocker fans...

Nightmare Castle - When she is discovered to be having an affair, Muriel (Barbara Steele) and her lover are tortured to death by her deranged husband Dr. Stephen Arrowsmith (Paul Muller). Tormented - When Jazz pianist Tom Stewart (Richard Carlson) decides he must drop his lover Vi (Julie Reding) and settle down to his planned marriage, Vi threatens to expose him. The ensuing argument leads to an accident in which Vi is hanging for her life, and Tom makes a conscious decision not to save her life. Trying to ignore his guilt, he is not allowed to move on as Vi's restless spirit makes his life a never-ending string of misery he cannot escape.

The Spirit Hunter - Chris Sendak (Jonathan T. Floyd) is a man with a colorful past, if only he knew what it was. Death has taken his body and his memories as he enters the realm of the supernatural, unseen by the living. He'll soon need to figure out what happened to him, because knowing is the key to his survival in the afterlife! Dogging his steps throughout his search is a malevolent entity known at the Spirit Hunter, determined to destroy all hope of redemption for Chris.

Cool movies, BETTER cover!.......2006-05-09

This DVD contains two classic horror films (including NIGHTMARE CASTLE with the uncomparable BARBARA STEELE!) and one newer release that doesn't seem to be available anywhwere else. The classics have been reviewed to death (no pun intended) so I see no need to review them. THE SPIRIT HUNTER, on the other hand, is definitely worth a watch. The story revolves around a man who cannot remember his past. The twist is that he is dead, and unlocking the secrets is the key to achieving heaven or eternal damnation.

The cover to the DVD is really cool -- it is a 2x3 lenticular, similar to the 1x1 toys you used to pull out of Cracker Jacks boxes that the image would change on when you moved it. In this case a beautifully rendered image of BARBARA STEELE turns to a skeletal ghost and the candles blow out. On top of this, I just found out that this cover (whose artist is CHRISTINA YODER) has been nominated for the coveted CHESLEY AWARD -- the top honor an artist of science-fiction, fantasy or horror can receive.

I recommend this DVD both for the exclusive film and for the cool cover. VINTAGE HOME ENTERTAINMENT has outdone themselves with this design. The lenticular effect and the work of this artist was also featured on nine other of Vintage's horror releases.

first off "a death at love house" IS NOT,REPEAT IS NOT in this set.if you are looking for it you can find it in other collections,maybe even with "souls".

Not Worth Your Time!.......2006-02-04

Price aside this disk is not worth putting in the time to view it. The other 2 reviews (obviously submitted by the same person) liked Death at Love House,,,unfortunately this movie is not one of the ones on the disc. Dominique is just barely passable and considering the names involved almost a shock,,did they need the money that badly?? Tormented is by far the worst,,pure drawn out crap slow moving poor acting,,a waste!! Carnival has some derivative zombi walks and even jazz zombi dancing but it just cant cut it,,three poor excuses for a ghost genre dvd,,Mine is trashed already.

"Death at Love House" (1978) It was a good movie with a surprising end. It was after all a made for TV movie.

"Dominique" A greedy husband and his wealthy, but emotionally fragile, wife begin a game of cat-and-mouse that turns deadly. Cliff Roberston plays a fortune-seeking entrepreneur out to commit the perfect murder. He soon discovers that his dead wife isn't about to make it that easy for him. It too had a surprising end. The two movies, "Death at Love House" and "Dominique" make buying this tape worthwile. At least, for me it did.

"Carnival of Souls" was a good movie. A young woman walks away from a car accident, confused and lost. She takes refuge in a town, but can't shake the feeling that the inhabitants aren't quite what they appear to be. I had seen something similar to this already so I kinda guessed at the end. I was right.

If you like those made for TV movies then you will like this collection of "ghost" movies.

Pretty good movies for the price.......2004-04-13

It's been many years since I saw "Death at Love House", I saw it when it came on TV back in the 70's. It stars a very young Kate Jackson and equally young, Robert Wagner. Basically, it's about this guy and wife doing a story on an old movie star who was killed in 1935. Robert Wagner's character, Joel Gregory, Jr. was the one who decided to write a story about the romance between this movie star and his father. It's strange and suspenseful. I was surprised by the end when I first saw and I was surprised again (cause it's been almost 30 years and I forgot the ending). The DVD was taken from Video tape, the picture was as good as it could get (having been transferred to DVD) which was pretty good in my opinion.

This tape has 3 haunting stories, the second one I watched was "Dominique" and because I like suspenseful type stories, I liked this one. I was surprised by the ending. Richard, This Is Silly Stuff: Neither Good Enough to Be Good Nor Bad Enough To Be Amusing.......2006-06-29

Although he was never an A-List star, Richard Carlson was much in demand during the 1950s, for he projected both masculinity and intellectualism in equal proportions. He also became something of a covert gay icon when he stepped out of the water wearing the form fitting bathing suit of the day in the memorable 1954 CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. As the 1950s wore on, Carlson found himself working more in television than in films, and the 1960 TORMENTED would be one of his few big screen efforts after 1959.

The film was based on a story from and directed by Bert I. Gordon, whose claim to fame up to this point were B-movies like THE BEGINNING OF THE END and EARTH VS. THE SPIDER; he would go on to create similar B-flicks with PICTURE MOMMIE DEAD and EMPIRE OF THE ANTS, spinning out quite a few films that have become late-night "So Bad It's Good" cult favorites. But unfortunately for every one concerned, TORMENTED is neither good enough to be good nor bad enough to be amusing.

The story concerns Tom Stewart (Richard Carlson), a jazz pianist with an impending performance at Carnegie Hall and and upcoming marriage to wealthy socialite Meg Hubbard (Lugene Sanders.) Alas, he also has a woman in his past: a singer named Vi (Juli Reding), and when our story begins she has come to raise hell about his impending marriage. For reasons never explained--there's a lot of "for reasons never explained" in this movie--they have met in an abandoned light house, and Tom doesn't put out a helping hand when Vi plunges to her death.

It's an interesting opener, but everything goes downhill from that point. Needless to say, Tom is soon tortured by the ghost of Vi, who appears in the form of transparent double exposures, a crawling hand on the living room floor, and even a disembodied head that suddenly turns into a very obvious wig stand when Tom decides to wrestle with it. Things go along pretty much as you would expect and the whole thing ends up just as you thought it would.

The story would be better described as a traditional ghost story with a lyric bent than as a horror movie per se, and the concept isn't without interest--but it doesn't do anything with it. The cast is above average for this sort film, and fans of Carlson will be glad to see him back in his swimsuit once more, even if the years since CREATURE have taken a toll. But although Carlson and company give it their all--it just doesn't go anywhere worth the effort. There are some truly hilarious moments (the head-wrestling a case in point) and a few "what were they thinking" moments (most particularly a blind real estate agent, of all things), but they aren't enough to tip the thing over into So Bad It's Good territory. To add insult to injury, the print is none too good--but then, given the low budget, it probably never was very good to begin with.

Fans of Richard Carlson will find it worth watching at least once, as will fans of director Bert I. Gordon--but for most people once will be enough.

Interesting, but scares aren't effective enough........2005-09-12

Tormented is one of the more interesting of the old black and white horror movies, though not one of the scariest.

Richard Carlson (It Came From Outer Space, Riders To The Stars) is planning to get married on a small island, but his old girlfriend confronts him in the lighthouse, threatening to spoil his new relationship, insisting she still wants him. When the railing breaks and she falls, he has a chance to save her life and pull her back up, but sees a chance to solve his problem and lets her fall to her death in the ocean below.

Throughout the rest of the movie the ghost of the woman haunts him - you see her footprints in the sand, her disembodied hand and then head - while he tries to go through with his wedding. But that's not all - the plot takes some interesting turns as the sailor who brought the old girlfriend to the island schemes blackmail, then the ghost taunts Carlson into murdering him, but his fiancee's sweet little sister is watching.

Unfortunately to me the ghostly gimmicks weren't scary. Perhaps I've seen too many more effective horror movies. But the story was interesting anyway.

The Ghost And Mr. Stewart..........2005-06-08

Richard Carlson (creature from the black lagoon, it came from outer space) is Tom Stewart, jazz pianist and sophisticated international playboy. Tom lives on a small island in peace and harmony with the sea. He's about to get married to Meg (Lugene Sanders), when a former girlfriend named Vi (Juli Reding) shows up to confront him alone. This would be great except that they're standing at the top of a lighthouse at the time. NOT a good spot for a heated argument as it turns out! Vi falls to her death after a rickety rail gives way and Tom refuses to pull her to safety. Splat! Gurgle! Glub! Thus begins the haunting terror of TORMENTED! You see, Vi is so annoying that she simply must return from her watery grave in order to bother Tom some more. She is the most tedious ghost ever! Of course, this is a Bert I. Gordon production, so nothing is subtle or mysterious. Instead of an eerie psychological thriller, we get a movie full of crawling hands, floating heads, and ghostly footprints. Astonishingly, it all works rather well somehow. Still, I couldn't help but wonder how much better it would have been if the supernatural aspects had been left more to the imagination (sigh). If you liked HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, 13 GHOSTS, ETC., then this one fits right in. -Special credit for Susan Gordon, the cute little girl in the movie. She never made me roll my eyes or want to puke once! That's incredible!...

VI A CON DIOS.......2005-03-20

B movie maven Bert I. Gordon brought us TORMENTED in the early sixties, not long after the prime psychological thriller PSYCHO filled audience's hearts with a new kind of fear---not monsters, but monsters within us. In TORMENTED, Richard Carlson mugs his way through the role of jazz pianist Tom Stewart, who tells his latest mistress (played by the bosomy Juli Reding) that their affair is over and he is planning on marrying the wealthy daughter of a corporate giant. She taunts him and in an accident at the lighthouse, she falls to her death. Tom could have saved her, but he lets her die. The movie grows a little tedious as we wonder if Tom's guilty conscience is getting the better of him, or is the ghost of Vi walking the beaches? The special effects are appropriately laughable and the ending is telegraphed from the moment Vi falls to her death, but for a psychological B movie ala DEMENTIA 13, TORMENTED is fairly enjoyable.

A terrifying tale of supernatural passion? No, not really........2005-02-12

The most interesting thing about "Tormented" (by the Sea-Ghost of Haunted Island) is that this 1960 horror B-movie wants to have it both ways and combine the supernatural with the psychological. On an island off the coast of New England, jazz pianist Tom Stewart (Richard Carlson from "It Came From Outer Space" and "Creature from the Black Lagoon") is preparing to get married. But his old girl friend, Vi Mason (Juli Reding), shows up refusing to let him go. They have their conversation at the top of an abandoned lighthouse and when the rail gives way, Vi is left dangling over the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. Tom fails to act and Vi falls to her death. This would seem to solve Tom's problem, but then strange things happen. Tom thinks he sees Vi's body floating in the ocean, but when he brings it to shore it turns out to be a bunch of seaweed. Is Tom's guilt gnawing away at him? It seems so, but then while walking back across the beach we see another set of footprints following him even though there is nobody there.

As the wedding day to Meg Hubbard (Lugene Sanders) approaches, more strange things keep happening to Tom. Some of them could be the work of Tom's imagination, and maybe he is thinking he is just going a bit crazy, but then Mrs. Ellis (Lillian Adams), the blind housekeeper (yes, really), says she can smell Vi's perfume and even little Sandy Hubbard (Susan Gordon, the director's daughter), Meg's little sister, starts seeing things she should not be seeing. Tom wants to ignore the ghostly apparitions and disembodied body parts, but he also has to contend with the shifty Nick (Joe Turkel), who brought Vi over to the island. She owes him $5 but is nowhere to be seen. Since Tom is really nervous about the subject, Nick figures there is something going on and puts the squeeze on the bridegroom. This can only end badly and if you do not know how Tom is going to die in this one then you have no grasp of the obvious.

None of the performances are laughable and Carlson certainly tries hard in this one, but when you get to the disembodied head scene you are going to start laughing because you will not be able to help it, especially when Tom picks up the "head." The dead Vi, reaching out from beyond her watery grave to take her vengeance on Tom, is more interesting than the living Meg, so it is hard not to be sympathetic with the ghost. But there are some nice atmospheric moments despite the problematic special effects, and Susan Gordon avoids becoming one of those unbearably cute kids and at least she appreciates the seriousness of the situation. Then there is the ending, which actually provides a nice little ghost story twist, even if the execution of the scene tends towards the melodramatic. That is why "Tormented" is one of those B-movies where the bad parts are often more entertaining than the good parts.

In case you did not notice up front, "Tormented" is directed by Bert I. Gordon, who also gets credit for the story, with a script is by George Worthing Yates. This is the same Bert I. Gordon who brought us "King Dinosaur," "Beginning of the End," "The Cyclops," "The Amazing Colossal Man," "Attack of the Puppet People," "War of the Colossal Beast," "Earth vs. the Spider" (a.k.a. "Earth vs. the Giant Spider"), and "The Boy and the Pirates" before he made "Tormented." After Roger Corman the man called B.I.G. was one of the most distinctive makers of monster B-movies in the late 1950s, working with his wife, Flora, to create the not-so-special special effects, usually for American International Pictures. "Tormented" is one of his more intimate efforts, but it still shows the distinctive B.I.G. touch.
