    5 out of 5 stars Synchronicities abound!.......2007-02-19

I had a near-death experience (NDE) 30 some years ago. I went on to become a researcher and interviewed more near-death experiencers than I can count. I have four published books on the NDE and natural spirituality -- I wish I had thought up this story myself.

    This plot is excellent.

For anyone who has or believes in sychronicities and serendipity -- this movie goes right to the heart. The child actor is wonderful. He doesn't over act but walks around in this heartfelt plot like any child his age would. Albert Finney always gives a good performance and is particularly good here as a scoundrel. There are a panel of angels that add so much comedy in their very straight way. And, Bridget Fonda plays a believable role as the mother to be who is so traumatized by her father's abandonment when she was a child. It all comes together in the end not just cleverly -- but spiritually.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
They are calling it a family movie but it's rated PG. There's some drinking and gambling in Atlantic City and one scene in a hotel room where Leslie Ann Warren is taking a bubble bath and Albert Finney is waiting in the bed. It's very cute and they don't really show anything but I'd ask my kids before I'd watch it with my grand kids.

The movie came out in 2001 around the time of 9-11. In fact, United airlines was showing it the day of 9-11. So it was put on a shelf for a while (never shown in the theater -- it's an independant film) and just came out not to long ago on DVD. I saw it on Showtime. This is a real feel good movie that makes one want to applaud and cheer at the end.

So put it on your list for a time when you want to be entertained and just feel good!

5 out of 5 stars Truly warm and wonderful film.......2007-02-05

I taped this show on my DVR to watch while my husband was watching the Super Bowl. I started watching it early and I couldn't stop. This show was really touching, very entertaining and not over done. I would recommend this film to anyone that wants a "feel good" movie. We have family movie night every Saturday and I am going to have us watch this next weekend. LOVED IT!!

5 out of 5 stars A spiritually uplifting film that should have had a wider release.......2005-12-14

I never even heard of this film until this month when my Spiritual Cinema Circle subscription featured this film in its November 2005 mail-out. For those who don't know, Spiritual Cinema Circle is a mail distribution service where members get a dvd each month that includes 3 short films and one feature film of spiritually inspiring content. They bring little known films into your home and I haven't been disappointed yet.

Anyhow, in the film "Singles", Campbell Scott's character and Bridget Fonda's character agree that while their relationship as a couple didn't work, that they were probably a "scorching couple in another universe." Well, once again they team up as a couple for this film. I'm a big fan of Bridget Fonda and try to see all of her works. She's made a lot of movies, but most of the roles haven't been high-profile as they were in the early 90s. In this film, she really shines as a pregnant wife who still carries the pain of having a father walk out on her at a young age.

The spiritual aspect of this film revolves around Milo, a card-playing boy who doesn't want to leave heaven for a lifetime on earth. His refusal to go when his time comes up has catacalysmic effect on the earth, so the board members who determine birth cycles enlist the help of a cantankerous old man serving time in hell for a lifetime of carnal desires. He has one day to convince Milo to be born. What ensues is a romp through Manhattan, hitting all the sights/activities that children tend to enjoy. Albert Finney as the old man is hilarious and reminds me of Jackie Gleason. He's thinking more about himself than the boy, so when he crosses paths with an old flame, played by Leslie Ann Warren (everything I've seen her in, she plays a floozie who can't stop giggling), they take a trip to Atlantic City for some adult fun of gambling.

By the time the film reaches resolution, we see the connection and purpose for everything, and it reaches a surprising yet satisfying conclusion. One thing I particularly enjoyed in this film were the members of the board...essentially kids acting grown-up, one of them an African American speaking with a very snobby-type of accent, which is done for humorous effect. I love how they keep the old man on the mission everytime he gets distracted by the ladies.

So, give this film a chance. I have no idea why it didn't get a wide release. It was supposedly released in 2001, and seeing New York with the World Trade Center, I don't know if that was an issue post 9/11, but if that's the case, it was a wrong decision. We could've used an inspiring comedy with spiritual elements to help us through our shock, grief, and trauma of that horrible day and the dark weeks after. This film will inspire you and maybe even give you something to think about regarding the children who choose to be born to you.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best family films ever made... really!!!.......2005-10-02

What a surprise to discover a great film that is otherwise unknown to the masses! After reading a glowing review in the Boston Globe, I had to order this DVD and see for myself. Yes, it's all true: DELIVERING MILO is a superb feature film that balances humor, philosophy and drama in a modern day twist on "It's A Wonderful Life." Without giving away the plot, I can say that no one is likely to be able to resist the affable Albert Finney and the enchanting young Anton Yelchin as MILO. Check it out!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2005-07-22

I can't believe this movie didn't get wider release in theaters. A truly thoughtful and entertaining film for children and adults alike. It's an inspiring story of redemption and the love of life. Albert Finney is outstanding, and Anton Yelchin is the most believable child actor I have seen in years. I highly recommend it!

it was ok but could have been alot better. it seemed to lag at places and they could have done things a bit more creepy but alas it didn't happen..........a reporter finds out she is pregnant and goes online to find a womens clinic to see about an abortion since her news anchor boyfriend doesn't want the baby since it would be damaging to his career. while searching online she comes across one and clicks on the site then goes in for a visit and the movie is suppose to take off from there but it doesn't. it basically turns out she is still pregnant which causes problems at work and with her boyfriend. she teams up with a detective who finally tells her she will die in 15 days from clicking on the website for the women clinic and they start investigating the clinic and the apartment of the previous victim. the end was rather lame as she gives pseudo birth when her boyfriend admits he forced his prevoius girlfreind to have an abortion. so unless you are really desperate for something to watch and can pick this up for a dollar and want to kill a bit of time i would not recommend watching this although it is better than some of the stinkers i have come across lately.

2 out of 5 stars Could Have Been So Much Better!.......2007-01-13

This is a film that could have been good, as it is however, it falls along the wayside into a predictable horror/thriller. "Unborn But Forgotten," may appeal to some viewers, but with the usual horror cliches in the film it does not make for an interesting or entertaining film. The film starts with a journalist, Su-Jin (Eun-Joo Lee) [who sadly committed suicide in 2005] as the lead protagonist in the film. She is investigating a mystery surrounding women associated with a women's hospital who die 15 days after viewing a website.

Moreover, these women were all pregnant at the time of thier deaths: Even though friends and family members of these women state that they were not pregnant prior to their deaths. While trying to unravel this mystery, Su-Jin finds that she herself is pregnant. Further, she has also visited this strange website; and therefore finds herself doomed to the same fate as the other women who have since died. With 15 days to discover the mystery of this website, she begins to investigate why this is happening. As Su-Jin searches for the origins of the curse, she discovers that it is the result of a vengeful curse.

Now, I have seen worse films in the horror genre, and I do believe that this film could have been a decent film. However, the scriptwriting and terrible acting is what dooms this film from the start to the finish. There are so many loopholes in this film, it would take an essay to finish this review. I never understood the films premise of why the ghost was angry, or why she started [or how] a website. Please, enough of the haunted website films. They are getting old. Some directors could make this work, but director Chang-jae Lim does not. I recommend the film with caution, as it might appeal to some viewer, but not many. As for me, I did not think it was very good. [Stars: 2.5]

3 out of 5 stars It was not what I expected it to be........2006-10-06

Okay I would like to let the reviewer below me know (THE FIDDLER) that I think it only his DVD that had that problem because my movie is in 1:85 anomorphic Widescreen and it also worked in my Widescreen TV just fine. And yes my DVD is from Tartan and I have had it for almost a year. But as for the movie it really let me down because as I saw this I felt like I was watching [...] again but the victims were only women. This movie only gets 3 stars from me out of respect for Lee Eun-JOO the lead actress of the film. I love the movies she has done but I recently found out that she died in 2005 (Suicide). So if you think that this film stinks I am with you but this is my way of paying respect to a beautiful women whose talent was wasted a year ago.

      2 out of 5 stars Easily Forgotten.......2006-06-13

Well the other reviewers covered everything but 1 point,...the box is marked Anamorphic Widescreen,....it isn't. It is the only Tartan Asia Extreme that is '4/3 letterboxed' that I have run across. I own many. Most are excellent. This one isn't,.. AND won't work on you widescreen TV. They have the subtitles in the black above and below the picture so you can't zoom the picture to fill the screen. You will have to watch a little picture centered on your big widescreen TV. I called Tartan to report the error and the customer service guy said,.." Well,..what do you want me to do about it. I just work here and everyone else is at lunch."

3 out of 5 stars No Where close to the ring.... But far from general horror........2006-04-09

Korea always surprises me with their films. This one is no different. More of a thriller or mystery than a horror film, Unborn But Forgotten is a predictable tale that although had gained little respect is worth a look for those in love with Korean film. It stands on it's own however the dialoge and the pace could have been up tempo a bit more.

The story is about a website that when people visit, strangely they die shortly later. Although this is similar to the ring the plot thickens because it's not random. There is a purpose to the killings that exists in the clues of the relationship and artwork surrounding the supersitious happening.

The film is worth viewing and is definately worth the used price here on amazon. If you love Korean film and want to add this to your collection I would suggest it. For Fans of "The Eye 2" or anyone who finds it interesting to see parenthood and the supernatural combined, I would say this is a must. Thriller/mystery is not much my thing but in the this vein it was very good. Not for those looking for horror.

Quality was outstanding as Tartan always provides.

3 out of 5 stars Inferior sequel offers up a few laughs.......2007-05-21

One thing you can say about Roger Corman: he's consistent. "Consistent" meaning his films always turn a profit (supposedly). "Consistent" also means that a viewer sitting down to a watch a Corman flick will consistently find the film in question larded with enough cheese to clog an elephant's arteries. You will see cheesy acting, cheesy special effects, and cheesy plots. Depending on the type of genre, you'll also find plenty of gory mayhem, beautiful babes, and nudity from the aforementioned beautiful babes. That's Roger Corman in a nutshell. Oh wait, I almost forgot; he's also the biggest ripoff artist in Hollywood history. Any film that has hit the big time in the last forty years invariably sees Roger Corman making a similar flick in an effort to cash in on the more successful offering. For example, when "Jaws" hit the jackpot back in the 1970s, Corman followed up with several pictures capitalizing on monsters run amok. When the car movie craze swept America in the late 1970s, Roger quickly jumped aboard by releasing films focusing on cars. "Star Wars" saw our man releasing several science fiction films strongly resembling, well, "Star Wars". That's Corman for you. Love him or leave him.

"The Unborn II," an inferior sequel to the intriguing 1991 film "The Unborn," begins with a slam-dunk scene one won't see in many American films. A woman, Linda Holt (Robin Curtis), approaches a playground overflowing with happy tykes. She coolly surveys the scene, walks up to one of the youngsters, and proceeds to pump him full of bullets. The movie could have ended right there and I probably would have given it five stars. You just don't see scenes like this in horror movies these days. It's too politically incorrect. Let's move on. Main character Catherine Moore (Michele Greene) moves into a nice neighborhood with her baby boy Joey. The film immediately treats us to scenes of domestic tranquility punctuated with encounters between Catherine and her nosy neighbors Artie and Marge Philips (Darryl Henriques and Carol Ita White). These two give a whole new meaning to the word "intrusive" as they pepper our protagonist with all sorts of annoying questions. They also want to see the baby, predictably enough, but Catherine won't reveal her offspring. Why? If you've seen the first film, you already know the answer to that question. Quit bothering me and just read the darn review! Sheesh!

Anyway, a few other characters arrive on the scene. We see another one of Catherine's neighbors, the overly friendly John Edson (Scott Valentine desperately looking for a career after "Family Ties"), and the two strike up one of those friendships we the viewer recognize as having the potential for romantic interaction. The movie also introduces us to the blazingly hot Sally Anne (Brittney Powell), daughter of the aforementioned Philips and the future babysitter of the enigmatic Joey. What else? Oh, remember that dame wreaking bloody havoc at the playground in the opening scenes of the movie? We learn she's out tracking down the monstrous babies from the first film. Her mission apparently involves engaging in open gun battles with the cops in the middle of hospital maternity wards. Fun. Her goals also involve tracking down one Joey Moore. In the meantime, Catherine has other problems. Like explaining to Sally Anne why she keeps Joey locked up in his bedroom. She also must hide what happens to a couple of meddling social workers when the two nosy nellies run straight into the jaws of an angry Joey. And Joey? By the time we see him, fully revealed to the camera, we're laughing too hard to take any of this seriously.

Does a movie like "The Unborn" really need a sequel? Already a belated ripoff of Larry Cohen's "It's Alive" series, Corman obviously saw dollar signs in resurrecting the baby run amok genre. The first installment worked well. Brooke Adams did a good job, and we also got to see Kathy Griffin's character murdered with a hammer. Sadly, "The Unborn II" doesn't achieve these Olympian heights. For one thing, the film just looks cheap. It has that sparse look one sees in most of Corman's 1990s and early 2000s efforts, a look that's one step above camcorder filmmaking but far short of the rich tapestry of colors and textures filmmakers achieve with properly developed celluloid. The performances and dialogue also leave a lot to be desired. In other words, both elements tank badly. They really need to quit writing scripts on toilet paper over there at Corman headquarters. Lastly, the special effects look appallingly awful. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when the film unveiled Joey for the first time. The kid has a noggin that looks like a globe covered with flesh colored newspaper. It's that bad, folks. Just appalling. He looks like something I would've created in grade school--while tripping acid.

Supplements. You're kidding, right? Expect a full frame picture transfer, a trailer for this film, and a few previews for other House of Corman extravaganzas. Expect much less in the audio and picture quality department. Like I said earlier, the movie looks cheap. So why should you watch "The Unborn II"? Well, if you saw the first one and really liked it, you should definitely check out this inferior sequel just to see how far an idea can fall in the hands of Roger Corman. You can also watch the film with a few friends and do your own MST3K treatment. That's always fun, and quite easy to do with this movie. Finally, you should watch this flick just to see the opening scenes on the playground. It's nasty stuff executed in a way that will make you flinch. Too bad the film couldn't live up to the high expectations it set for itself at the beginning. I'll give "The Unborn II" three stars because of that scene, Sally Anne, and the hilarious hijinks that kept me laughing throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Could this be the greatest movie of all time?.......2006-09-13

I ask, could "The Unborn II" be the greatest movie of all time? Let me describe the opening scene and I think you can answer that question for yourself.

We open to a nice little playground in what you assume to be a pleasant suburban neighborhood. We see children playing and loving parents watching over them. A woman in a maroon suit walks up, slowly scanning the scene with cold eyes.

A mother nearby makes small talk but the woman in the maroon jacket barely speaks and instead concentrates on the children. She leaves the mother and asks a small girl if she can point out Robby Brown. The little girl points to a boy sitting alone in the sandbox.

The woman approaches and asks coldly, "Robby Brown?" He turns, startled, and looks up into the face of the woman towering above him. His vacant stare seems to project his confusion and fear from being addressed in such a manner.

Without saying a word the woman in maroon reaches into her bag, pulls out a large hand gun, and shoots little Robby Brown.

      In the face.

      Twice.

The movie only gets better from there. Take the time to enjoy this modern masterwork. Thank you, and god bless.

1 out of 5 stars 0 STARS: Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! A very funny program!!.......2006-07-13

Admittedly, I never saw part I of "The Unborn" movies. However, after viewing Unborn II and based on its individual merits as a horror movie, I feel safe in saying that "Unborn II" is not only a joke in the extreme sense of the word, but is also a piece of garbage. I must admit I have never been a fan of these killer-baby movies, but they are humorous..."The Unborn II" is no exception to that rule. Ha ha ha ha!!! "The Unborn II" is a very funny program because it stinks so bad, but I don't think that was the creator's desired effect in the audience but, after watching this movie, maybe I am wrong???

4 out of 5 stars Creepy, sleazy, cheesy fun!.......2005-03-27

Good old Roger Corman is at it again with 1991's "The Unborn." In case you have been living under a rock for the last thirty or forty years, Roger is one of the chaps responsible for a large percentage of the low budget schlock that lines the shelves at your local video store. He's fallen on hard times in the last decade or so, especially since the arrival of DVD has given any schlep with a video camera and a dream access to the straight to video market Corman once controlled with an iron fist, but many of his films from the 1970s and 1980s are memorable if often indigestible experiences. Roger supposedly never made a film that lost money, probably because he never hesitated to churn out a ripoff of the latest Hollywood hit or genre craze. The public loves racing car films? Give 'em "Grand Theft Auto" and "Eat My Dust." Depression era mobsters raking in big bucks at the box office? Here's "Big Bad Mama." And so it goes, film after film that cashes in on the latest smashes made at a quarter of the budget (if even that). At least we can credit Corman with giving Ron Howard his first directing gig.

"The Unborn" is a later Corman production that manages to be quite entertaining despite its low budget. It's the story of a successful young couple, Virginia (Brooke Adams) and her husband Brad Marshall (Jeff Hayenga), who decide to seek the help of fertility specialist Dr. Richard Meyerling (James Karen) for obvious reasons. The idea of a little rug rat running around is too much to pass up for Virginia, who is willing to do whatever it takes to bear a child--even if that means suspending her career as a successful writer of children's books. Meyerling tells the couple to put out of their minds any problems they encountered at other clinics; his methods are nearly a hundred percent successful. Even the most difficult of cases walk away with a loving tot nestled in their arms at the end of nine months. Sounds great, doesn't it? Well, we all know if something sounds to good to be true it probably is, and such is the case with Richard Meyerling and his clinic. It turns out that the good doctor gives the word "quack" a new level of meaning. Sure, his methods result in the birth of a child, but who wants a kid that is the product of gene splicing? Or a kid that is part of a plot to replace humans with a master race? That kooky Meyerling!

Of course, Virginia doesn't know anything about this stuff when she agrees to Meyerling's schemes. All she knows is that the procedure works and she'll soon be a proud mother. Then a series of increasingly bizarre incidents start to take their toll. Virginia experiences enormous mood swings, mood swings far beyond what a normal pregnant woman should experience. Meyerling takes it all in stride, however, and assures our gal that nothing is amiss. He even gives her some tapes to listen to that should soothe her troubled soul. Problem is, these tapes appear to have subliminal messages on them of a decidedly disturbing nature. Since Brad went out of town on business (how convenient), Virginia has no one to turn to when her mental state deteriorates even further. She begins to suspect, obviously, that something is wrong with the baby. Then she suspects that something is downright sinister with the baby. And she's right--we know this because it's a Corman film and because we see what happens to a couple of Meyerling's other patients. Yuck! But at least everything ends with a sigh of relief as Virginia Marshall goes on a mission to destroy Meyerling's infernal schemes and thus make the world safe from the master race. Or does it? Whichever the result, you go, girl!

You simply must offer praise to a film that casts Brooke Adams as a mentally unbalanced mother to be, Lisa Kudrow as Meyerling's brunette secretary, and comedienne Kathy Griffin as a cloying, new age natural birth instructor with Sapphic tendencies named Connie Chicago. Especially when said movie has Griffin's character bludgeoned to death with a hammer. That scene alone adds a star to the overall review because, after all, who among us wouldn't like to see this loudmouth on the wrong end of a blunt instrument? Now that I think about it, every television program and film made from here on out should have a scene where Kathy Griffin meets her maker in a particularly heinous manner. Anyway, I liked "The Unborn" even without Griffin's gooey demise. Brooke Adams does a great job portraying a woman dealing with forces she doesn't understand, veteran character actor James Karen is sufficiently creepy as the insane Meyerling, and the movie is jam packed with stomach churning gore. A spike through the forehead, superfetuses in jars, a nasty scene with a butcher's knife, and assorted other grotesqueries make "The Unborn" required viewing for sleaze lovers.

Seeing as how this is a Corman comedy classic, you just know the DVD will contain a bunch of trailers for other must see low budget cheese. Previews for "The Nest," "Humanoids From the Deep," "The Terror Within," along with cast and crew biographies, round out the viewing experience. Another interesting factoid concerning "The Unborn": Gary Numan scored the film! He did a good job making the film sound very atmospheric in a creepy way. I definitely recommend this one for horror fans if for no other reason than that we just don't get to see many killer baby films nowadays.

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me? This was LAME!!!.......2003-04-15

I WANT MY 96 MINUTES BACK!!!! REALLY LAME HORROR FLICK!!
I don't know what it is about the quality of horror in the early 90s...but this is a good example of how it can go terribly wrong. If this film had been made in 1981 or 1971..or heck, even 1961 it could have had a good kitch factor...instead it's an overly stylized attempt at what a good 80's Slasher actually is.

The one star rating is for the casting of Lisa Kudrow (I think she's super cute as a brunette!)...and Comedian Kathy Griffin as a Lesbian Co-Mother-To-Be!!
The remainder of the movie gets a BIG ZERO!!!

      2 out of 5 stars Having a baby can be a scream.......2001-09-26

Director Rodman Flender film doesnýt have the resonance of great horror. At times it barely rises above an exploitation title, being hindered by gross out effects and the developing ridiculousness of the screenplay by Henry Dominic. The narrative reads as Rosemaryýs Baby redux with a dash of David Cronenberg and The Boys from Brazil.
After a forboding prologue where a pregnant woman is made to suffer because she drips blood onto her kitchen floor as she eats raw meat, we meet Brooke Adams who has been referred to the in-vitro centre where James Karen is a specialist. Of course, any doctor played by James Karen is automatically suspicious, and soon Adams becomes paranoid about the child she is carrying. Dominic has the sense to make Adams not the only pregnant woman, and also gives her access to a couple who have a child from the prodecure, which allows for her to have alternate opinions, though the points scored off the lesbian couple seem mean, though Adamsý husband is conveniently out of town when things start going wrong. Luckily Flender delivers the best scene in the film for the climax, when Adams follows the sound of a baby crying and supplies a shock payoff. However after this highpoint, we plummet.
We get a grossout mage of the fetus moving a digit in the same shape as Adamsý drawing, a laugh from the use of a Baby on Board sign, the low gag of a saccharine TV presenter turning shrewish off-camera, and the most disappointing setpiece when Brooks is being interviewed live and has an hysterical turn - for this Flender goes camp with the crew screaming for a re-run. The prologue deprives us of a shock, but later we get a second one even if in a ludicrous context involving a baby POV and the fatherýs reaction. There is also an early gratuitous and long sex scene, a low impact Alien-like set, and the ending is too obviously left open for the sequel.
Adamsý cracked beauty and individual voice add something to her role, and when she cries amongst stuffed baby toys she manages to convey a moment of pathos, even if she isnýt as skilled, lyrical or vulnerable as a Mia Farrow. Also note this is another early role for Lisa Kudrow in her long black hair period.

5 out of 5 stars scared the plasma out of me.......2000-03-11

I recently underwent surgery. The hostpital's movie channel showed "The Unborn," and I figured "what the hell, I'm not going anywhere. Might as well watch it" (and the intravenous machines I'm hooked up to won't allow me to reach the TV.) Well this was the scariest thing I've ever seen. My heart raced at such a pitch that my plasma drips exploded. What a movie. Brooke Adams was wonderful; better than Mia in Rosenberg's Baby. If you like your horror "on the rocks," THE UNBORN is for you.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent horror........1999-08-04

Brooke Adams vs. psycho fetus created by wacko doctor James Karen in an attempt to breed superhumans. Good suspense, good acting and good scares. Docked a star only for the absurd fetus-killing-victims-one-by-one plot development. A must see if you like horror.
