    1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-02-16

"Savage Harvest" was the debut film from director Eric Stanze, who has since gone on to direct more ambitious efforts like "Ice From the Sun" and "Scrapbook." Aside from a few decent gore effects, "Savage Harvest" has little to recommend. The storyline is derivative and badly scripted with lots of exposition delivered in the first thirty minutes by blank faced actors whose boring deliveries will leave you on the verge of falling sleep. Once the gore starts flying, the storyline picks up a little but is still an incoherent and largely uninteresting mess. Despite Stanze's efforts to inject some life into the material with a few stylish directorial touches, "Savage Harvest" is a mostly forgettable feature debut from a director who would make significant leaps in quality with his future projects.

2 out of 5 stars A slow, but decent start to a long career.......2006-10-10

This is about, well, I am not sure exactly. I think a group of kids decide to camp near a lake where a Native American tribe elder was doing voodoo, got lynched, and buried in a water hole. They somehow conjure up some demons, a portal to another dimension, and a crazy looking witch doctor.

The film gets off to a really slow start. The acting is bad and the dialogue lame. I found it hard to even look at the actors. The kills do not begin until the 30 minute mark and then it is too late to save the film. The whole idea surrounding the magic rocks and tribes and conjuring demons was complicated and with boring characters explaining the back story, you will not care to listen at all.

The positive is that the special effects are pretty good considering the low budget. There is one demon with slime squirting out of a nail at the end of it's tongue!?! There have been comparisons (mostly likely by the production team themselves) that this is the next Evil Dead. I beg to differ. This film was boring whereas Evil Dead was hilarious with an immensely likable "hero".

This is the first outing for Stanze in the director's chair or any other chair for that matter. Considering this was done on a low budget with limited experience, I think it shows he can accomplish better things down the road. I have seen Scrapbook (2000), which had better acting and moved at a fast pace, so that is proof enough to me.

Bottom Line: Moves along slowly with easily forgettable characters. Watch only if a Stanze fan or in need of new mild gorefest.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-12-02

I have to applaude the efforts of the creator's of this movie. First, the special effects had the quality of a large budget production made even today.
The story line was very interesting and unique and the kills are as gruesome as they could be.
I know this movie was made with heart so anyone interested in starting a career in independant cinema should check this out. It holds an influencial spark for young movie maker's like myself. It's also fun to watch with a group of people as most classic style horror films are.

    5 out of 5 stars fun.......2005-12-02

For any old school horror fans out there you do not want to miss this movie. I liked the story of this movie. It was different. Not just some evil spirits, but something with a little more history to it. The fx in this were just sooo much fun. I enjoyed this movie very much. To me the more bllod the better. I woul say anyone who wants to sit down and watch a good old horror flick this movie is it.

    5 out of 5 stars Re-awakening the Dead..........2005-11-30

As the trend to re-release older titles heightens, Eric Stanze (SCRAPBOOK, ICE FROM THE SUN) gets another Special Edition release through Image Entertainment in this tenth anniversary edition of Savage Harvest. As Savage Harvest was Wicked Pixel Cinema and Eric Stanze's first major motion picture, this movie does show some of the beginnings of independent movie-makers, however, with a great story and good special effects, Savage Harvest holds up well over many viewings. With this special edition, you get needed remastering plus a handful of good special features. Also on the DVD is the first look at the preview for the upcoming Savage Harvest 2:October Blood which will hopefully be out sometime next year. If you enjoy some good blood and guts fun, re-awaken the dead and pick up this re-release of a gorey classic.

This movie is a credit to the genre! Low budget horror that has FX scenes that you want to rewind and see over and over. They arrive during the daylight hours, then when night falls, the [stuff] hits the fan! How will these people survive? Blood and gore all over the place!
