Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster star in Sorry, Wrong Number, an odd telephonic thriller that starts off with a bang. Stanwyck, playing a shrill invalid, is at home alone and phoning around to find her husband. Thanks to a crossed wire, she overhears a murder plot, but she can barely get anyone to pay attention to her, let alone believe her. The rest of the film is played out in telephone conversations and flashbacks as our increasingly frightened heroine tries to find her husband and unravel the murder. Stanwyck, as always, gives a terrific performance, managing to make her character both unlikeable and compelling at the same time. Lancaster, as her kept husband, is handsome, virile, and trapped all at once. The plot, expanded to a film from a tight, dark little radio play, wanders at times but gathers itself back together for a corker of an ending. --Ali Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sorry, Wrong Number.......2007-06-25

Based on the famous radio play by Lucille Fletcher, which made Agnes Moorehead an overnight star in 1943, Litvak's tense, unsettling thriller relies on extended flashbacks to relay the fragile nature of Leona's health and her fizzling marriage to penniless Henry, who feels oppressed by Leona and her controlling father James Cotterell (Begley), a drug manufacturer. But the central mystery, disclosed bit by bit, remains intact until the final moments of the film. Stanwyck is in top form here as a shrill, demanding, paranoid, and ultimately hysterical presence, while Lancaster is winning as the headstrong husband determined to carve a place for himself in the world. Litvak's fluid camerawork and taut direction lend menace too. For a great chiller, try this "Number."

4 out of 5 stars Stanwyck At Her Best.......2007-06-17

Barbara Stanwyck was Oscar nominated for Best Actress for her role as a neurotic, controlling heir in Sorry Wrong Number, but lost to Jane Wyman's performance in Johnny Belinda. Stanwyck's screen performance as Burt Lancaster's domineering yet vulnerable wife is brilliant. The last five minutes of the film still gives me chills. Anatole Litvak who directs this 88 minute noir, successfully draws every ounce of Stanwyck's desperate emotions to film. Many critics thought that Lucille Fletcher's play would not transmitt as well on film, but Litvak's dark vision succeeds in every way. Slow camera tracking that increases Stanwyck's isolationism, effective use of shadows, and flashback narratives all add tension to the film's climatic finale. In Gary Fishgall's autobiography of Burt Lancaster, he points out that Lancaster lobbied hard for the role of Stanwyck's weak, corruptable husband. The role offered Lancaster a chance to expand his range as an actor by playing a character that departed from his tough-guy image. In Sorry Wrong Number the noir protagonist is no match for Stanwyck's dominating presence, even though she plays a woman whose neurotic fears confine her to a bed. If you are a fan of film noir the Paramount Collection DVD is crisp and the black and whites never looked better. Unfortunately the DVD does not have any production features except the original theatrical trailer.

3 out of 5 stars Very good adaptation of an all-time classic radio play.......2007-05-15

Barbara Stanwyck & Burt Lancaster do well in this cinematic version of the radio classic -- which was essentially a one-woman, one-act play with radio's all-time greatest female actress, Agnes Moorehead. It's sad that Moorehead didn't play the role in the film, but then again it's somewhat understandable, given that she was no movie star. Although the expansion material can get a bit too drawn out, this was an excellent noir film. Highly recommended -- almost as much as the radio play, if you can find it.

5 out of 5 stars It's aged incredibly well.......2007-02-05

I was impressed that a movie made in 1948 still had such an impact on me, 60 years later.

The story centers around Barbara Stanwyck's character, a rich invalid. She's stuck at home one night, without her nurse, and her husband, played by Burt Lancaster, is late coming home. While trying to call his office, the phone lines cross, and she overhears two men plotting a murder.

This makes her incredibly uneasy. She calls her husband's secretary, who tells her about a woman who came to his office, then she calls the woman, then her doctor, then a man who works with her husband, growing more and more frantic with each phone call. Slowly she starts to piece together things about her husband that she never knew before.

You get more and more drawn in as the movie goes on. By the last five minutes, I was holding my breath and I had that tight little feeling in my stomach, not unlike the one I get when I'm on top of a hill on a roller coaster, about to rush down.

Sorry Wrong Number is everything a good suspense film should be. It builds up tension at a perfect pace and, at just the right second, the whole thing comes crashing down.

3 out of 5 stars Three harmless little words have suddenly become the most chilling!.......2007-01-15

"Sorry Wrong Number" lacked the humor and humanity of Hitchcock's 'Rear Window,' but was more relentlessly frightening, and, like "Rear Window," it exerted its grip because of the helplessness of the principal character, confined to one room...

Barbara Stanwyck played, with terrifying conviction, a wealthy, neurotic, partly paralyzed, bedridden woman, alone at night in her New York home with only the telephone for company because her husband, Burt Lancaster, has given the staff he night off...

Calling to see why her husband is not back from his office... Stanwyck gets a crossed line and hears two men discussing a murder which one of them has been paid to do that night: paid by a husband who wants to get rid of his rich, neurotic and bedridden wife whose servants have been given the night off..

At first, Stanwyck does not realize that she is to be the victim. Then, as the killing hour approaches, she does realize... In mounting panic she starts calling the police, her doctor, anywhere for help...

As the vulnerable woman menaced, Stanwyck won her a fourth Oscar nomination... Her bedside telephone has a star role to play...

Lancaster was sufficiently persuasive as the husband, who only can save his own life by getting money for his gambling debts...

Description

He's a spy like no other. The top operative for the shadowy government agency M9, John Drake is reluctant to resort to violence, rarely draws his gun, and never ends up in bed with the girl. Before he made history as the Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan broke the mold for small-screen spies with SECRET AGENT. This collection includes the nine final episodes of the classic series--digitally restored, remastered and presented in their original U.S. broadcast order--and features the only two shows filmed in color.

Episodes: I Can Only Offer You Sherry, The Hunting Party, Two Birds with One Bullet, I'm Afraid You Have the Wrong Number, The Man with the Foot, The Paper Chase, The Not-So-Jolly Roger, Koroshi, Shinda Shima.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of the best TV series ever.......2004-04-02

The only reason this volume of the Secret Agent collection gets a four is the two color episodes, which are appallingly below par, like a really, really bad James Bond movie. But you can't go wrong with any of the black and white episodes!

5 out of 5 stars But where are the 39 episodes of the first season????.......2003-08-18

Yes, yes, we got all of the one-hour episodes. But where are the first season 39 episodes? All of the 30-minutes ones that constituted the first Danger Man season with our best example of british cool Patrick Mcgoohan. Now that we have the Prisoner episodes, and all of the one-hour episodes of Danger Man, we really need to copmplete our Pat McGoohan collection! I think these 39 30-minutes episodes would fit nicely on 5 DVDs... Are you reading this, A&E?

5 out of 5 stars The Best For Last.......2003-06-18

I'll be brief. It's rare that a TV series has some of its finest episodes toward the end of the run, but DANGER MAN is a rare show. And as far as I am concerned, the debate as to whether Drake is Number Six is really no debate at all. Of course he is. The Number Six character is never named otherwise. McGoohan had to deny it for legal reasons, but the continuity of character is there (snapping fingers when nervous, same inflection of speech, even an old friend of Drake's with the same name appears both in DANGER MAN and THE PRISONER). Enjoy these Final episodes, then watch THE PRISONER. Such a pair of series, and such a great actor to make them work, will never come around again.

5 out of 5 stars Sad to See it End.......2003-05-12

Navigating its way to Japan, the Danger Man series ends with a bang, and this time in color. A definite classic for any 60's video collection.

5 out of 5 stars A dark, realistic, and stunning classic.......2003-05-10

I've been a big follower of 60's cult television and Secret Agent Man is by far the darkest and most realistic of the spy genre. Assasinations, plot twist after plot twist, intelligent writing that will keep you on the edge of your seat--this series has it all---even a character that is showing his frustration at what his job involves (which helps to build the perfect segway into "The Prisoner"--) The set completes the 1 hour collection (and I certainly hope that they'll release the 1/2 hour episodes at some time)-- My only critique is that they should have included not only the 1 hour versions of "Shindo Shima" and "Koroshi" (as they did) but also the entire full length version as it was put together for a feature film--a few scenes were added for continuity that collectors would have appreciated-
(even moreso because the segway that ties the two episodes together in the film version actually shows a differant impression of where an agent's loyalty lies then in the pt.1 and pt.2 version---a cool little twist that you'll only catch in the film version)---At any rate---the entire series is fantastic and excluding the final two episodes, the noirish Black and White atmosphere of Secret Agent morphing into the color of The Prisoner has an almost Wizard of Oz effect if you watch the two series back to back and assume that Drake and No. 6 are indeed the same character (which I tend to believe regardless of the lingering debate amongst hardcore fans)

5 out of 5 stars Suprise ending Great Movie want for my collection.......2004-06-24

This was one of the best movies I have seen all year. Great Suprise ending, kept me guessing and had a diffent ending would have never thought of it. Great Acting, only thing I did not like was the one or two bedroom scens that added nothing to the picture, even with that was a great movie am buying it to add to my movie collection 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars You must be kidding !.......2004-02-20

The worst thing since a long time. Why bother making that kind of crap...

4 out of 5 stars Lipper shows Roberts Wrong Number.......2002-09-09

Eric Roberts is one of those great actors you wonder what happened to, after Oscar nods in the eightees. Here is another example of a movie where I looked to see if he had some of his old stuff back, when all I could focus on was the the talent of a newcommer (sorry don't know you) - David Lipper.

This guy simply steals the movie with solid acting skills, while Roberts and Bako were the least entertaining. I thought Kane Picoy was pretty good too as the headstrong cop.

All in all, an interesting little movie, maybe a little too wordy at times. In the vain of the Usual Suspects. Worth checking out.
