Ole Bornedal's thriller about a young law student who takes a job as a night watchman in a creepy morgue is long on style but comes up a little short on quality of storytelling. Bornedal sets things up in high style as Martin Bells (Ewan McGregor doing an American accent) makes his rounds in the middle of the night, with only corpses and his own paranoia for company. When bodies start coming in, the prostitute victims of a grisly serial killer, the imposing detective on the case (a hulking Nick Nolte) begins to suspect that Bells is the killer, as all clues start pointing to him. Coscripted by Steven Soderbergh (Out of Sight) and adapted from Bornedal's 1994 Danish thriller, Nightwatch forsakes out-and-out thrills for a more moody approach with flickering lights, menacing shadows, and echoing footsteps down long hallways. If only there were a little more energy before the highly effective denouement, which does get scares, even after the killer is revealed. Still, McGregor is supported by a stronger than average cast: in addition to Nolte, Josh Brolin does an amusing turn as McGregor's out-of-control best friend, Patricia Arquette fares well in the standard girlfriend role, and the always creepy Brad Dourif makes the most of a sinister and funny bit part as the on-call doctor. You won't jump out of your seat, but by the end of Nightwatch you will find yourself remarkably tense. --Mark Englehart

4 out of 5 stars sic horror flick.......2007-01-12

Good movie for any scary movie/thriller lover. The Burl Ives music really sticks with you. Great cast, interesting plot.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes horror is more than gore.......2006-12-21

What's really scary about this film is the brutal betrayal of its bumbling yet innocent main character, by somebody who does it "just because". Nick Nolte's speach wherein he explains that "this" killer is frightening because he really has no reason for what he does. And that fact leaves none of us safe, as Ewan and Patricia found out.

If you don't get that sometimes horror is more than gore watch what's happening in Iraq right now. If you're not horrified, you're not paying attention.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN THE REVIEWS WOULD HAVE YOU BELIEVE!.......2006-10-03

This remake of Ole Bornedal's original film, while not quite as good as the original, is still highly enjoyable. This suspense-thriller also has a very good supporting cast. Try not to take the film too serioius and just enjoy the film. Martin Bells (Ewan McGregor) is a law student who decides to take a job as a Nightwatchman for added income. The job he takes however is in a morgue. He figures he can earn a few more bucks, and study during the night as the morgue is quiet. He is very wrong.

Somewhere is the city [Los Angeles] someone is killing prostitutes. A detective on the case is Thomas Cray (Nick Nolte). Nick Nolte's character is a somewhat burned out detective. Strange things begin to occur in the morgue at night however, and the setting is not exactly as quiet as Martin had hoped. As more bodies of the serial killer are brought to the morgue, strange things begin to happen, which put Martin on edge. Partly it is his friends playing tricks on him. However, there are other things that his friends are not doing which make the film interesting and suspenseful.

Enter the Detective portrayed by Nick Nolte. He begins to suspect that Martin may be connected to the killings. Moreover, certain events that transpire at the morgue draw suspicion to Martin. The part played by Brad Dourif as the Doctor on call is hilarious, and I only wish they had used him more in the film. He really plays his part great. The movie is not one of the greatest suspense thrillers out there, however, it is very entertaining nonetheless. I found the film very good. The identity of the killer will shock you, and I think that this twist in the film was pretty good. Recommended if you like decent thriller films. [Stars: 3.5]

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre thriller that takes awhile to gain momentum.......2006-09-17

In Nightwatch, Ewan McGregor plays Martin, a law student who takes a job as a nightwatchman in the medical examiner's office. He works from 8pm-4am and his only real task besides sitting behind a desk is to walk through the building once every hour and turn a series of keys to ensure that the's been there the whole time. This includes one particularly spooky walk through the morgue. Still Martin thinks the job will be easy money and a give him a chance to study.

What he doesn't factor in is that there's a killer on the loose who has been murdering young prostitutes and cutting out their eyes. When their bodies start to turn up and he becomes a suspect, Martin has to try to find the killer himself and clear his name.

The first 30 to 45 minutes of this movie move pretty slowly and it takes awhile for the plot to take shape. At first I wasn't sure if the movie was about the serial killer, about Martin, or about the morgue since all of them seemed important but none of them really stood out. It seems like the point of the beginning of the movie was to set up an aura of creepiness by showing images of the morgue and the dark exterior of the building without showing any scary moments or blood and gore.

In fact, the best part of the whole movie is the last 20 minutes, though it took a lot of effort to get there. I wanted to turn this movie off several times because there was just too much going on without enough focus. I'd have expected a bit more with the names they have in the cast like McGregor, Nick Nolte, and Patricia Arquette. In the end, the movie moves too fast to wrap up all the plot elements that were left open, and this detracts too much from the story. I'd rent this or watch it on tv, but it's definitely not a good buy in my opinion.

2 out of 5 stars NIGHTWATCH.......2006-03-04

surprisingly good cast, poorly written, who works in the morgue with the lights out? come on this movie is so unscary its boring and dull

    Description

Rembrandt's Masterly Brushstrokes: Rembrandt wanted the surface of his paintings to sparkle, and he achieved his desired result by developing paints of a highly specialized formula. His paints contained secret ingredients known only to the artist, and have eluded discovery until now.

Rembrandt and His World: Rembrandt's home for many years of his life was in Amsterdam where he and his wife kept a huge number of paintings to satisfy his mania for collection, and to provide inspiration for his own work. This program presents the restoration of his house and contains insights into Rembrandt's personality.

Rembrandt: Painter of Man is a fascinating documentary showing Rembrandt's unique capacity to capture and depict the many aspects of humanity. Dozens of his most famous paintings, as well as his self-portraits, are featured.

There are 40 years between the first and the last self-portraits of Rembrandt van Rijn. The first shows the coming young artist: proud and self-assured. The last one shows the old painter, marked by his misfortune and worries. In his paintings man was central, and these and his self-portraits are a mirror of his life, which is shown in a series of dissolves from one self-portrait to the other. A Film By Bert Haanstra.

: The Restoration of "The Night Watch" is an in-depth look at the restoration work performed on Rembrandt's masterpiece "The Night Watch," which was seriously vandalized in 1975. The eight-month job of restoration began: a new canvas was fixed in place, old varnish was removed, previous damage was repaired, and the entire painting was cleaned. This fascinating program shows how this masterpiece was brought back from the brink of destruction in less than a year, with the result that "The Night Watch" is once again on display.A Film By Theo Kok.

Rembrandt and His World: The renowned 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn was not only a major artist, but he was also an avid collector of prints, paintings and objects d'art. Many of the items in his collection became inspirations for his work and often can be recognized in his drawings and paintings. Today, the collection may be viewed at Rembrandt's house, now completely renovated and restored to its original condition and where many of his world-famous works of art were originally produced.
Rembrandt and his wife Saskia bought the house in 1634, two years after their marriage. At the time, the young artist's works were selling well and they lived quite comfortably. The Rembrandt's stayed in this grand residence for nearly twenty years surrounded by not only his own works, but also by works of numerous other artists.
This unique program brings to life the world in which Rembrandt lived and worked as well as showing less well-known aspects of the old master and his personality. It was his mania for collecting that ultimately led to the artist's financial downfall. Although his income had declined with fewer commissions coming to him, the artist continued to add to his collection and this finally led the family into bankruptcy. Fortunately, a complete inventory of the collection was drawn up at the time, and this list was an immensely valuable source of information during the restoration of the home.In addition to the many fine paintings and other works of art in his home, Rembrandt kept albums containing some 8,000 prints and drawings - many of which were by famous artists. Not only did the artist derive inspiration from many of the works in the collection, but also from the house itself.

5 out of 5 stars Nightwatch - Probably the best Danish movie ever made :-).......2005-12-03

This movie is so horrifying that sometimes really get freaked out when I see it. Particularly that song. I can't even see the actor that played the bad guy as anything else.

I'm from Denmark where this movie was originaly made, and there are not many movies which are so high in calibre as this one.

I think we make pretty good movies. The US have made remakes of many of our movie like: Catch that kid(Klatretøsen), Nightwatch(Nattevagten) and many more. So give movies you from Europe a change, they maybe surprise you.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing . . . .......2005-09-04

Definately better then anything that could be made in America, this Danish thriller is scary and funny and just about everything you could want in a great movie. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Martin is amazing, making the viewer able to feel how truely terrified he is when he sees disturbing things happening at the mourge he is working at.

Subtitles are a girl's best friend.

5 out of 5 stars The scariest movie ever produced in Denmark!.......2004-09-25

Ole Bornedals breakthrough movie as a director. He later did a Hollywood version of this film. It was a good version, but nothing compared to this - the original. It's a creepy, almost claustrophobic (sp?) film.

I will not tell you to skip the Hollywood version, but I strongly recommend you to watch this film.

4 out of 5 stars Terrifying atmosphere in the morgue..........2004-02-24

A law student, Martin, wants to make it on his own without the help from his mother, which leads him to acquire a night job in a morgue. It is a job that keeps Martin on his toes as he is fearful of the atmosphere with the dead people around him. During one of Martin's night shifts the police bring in a victim from a serial-killer, and strange occurrences begin to happen in the morgue. Can these occurrences have something to do with Martin's dare-game that he is playing with his friend Jens, who also is a law student, or is it something else that is after him. Nightwatch is a suspenseful film that uses camera angles that maximize the situational terror and push the audience to experience the same fear that Martin is experiencing in the film. This leaves the audience with a cinematic happening that produces chills and horror, and which is of good quality.

    5 out of 5 stars A superior thriller.......2001-11-12

I did not see the American remake of this superior Danish thriller. Director Ole Bornedall knows how to created nerve wracking suspense and real shocking horror. The film starts slowly and carefully creates an atmosphere of dread. The clever screenplay has several interesting twist. A must see for any fan of intelligent thrillers- and for once a film truly worthy of comparison to the master- Hitchcock.
