Remember watching this silly little comedy from your childhood? It may not have aged all that well, but is still goofy, good fun. Okay, so you can spot the stunt double, and Don Knotts's twitches are a little more obvious. Still, fans of his familiar routines will be comforted in knowing they can again watch their skinny underdog hero solve the ghost story while winning the prettiest girl in town. Knotts plays a trembling typesetter hoping to become a reporter by cracking the mystery of the local haunted house. To do so, he must spend a night there. Good-hearted, non-threatening, and completely gooey, this is the equivalent of light-weight cinematic junk food. -- Rochelle O'Gorman

THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN
A TRUE COMEDY, STARING: DON KNOTTS
UNIVERSAL PICTUES RELEACED IN 1965
It's so scary you'll laugh yourself silly. The ghost of Mr. Chicken is a true comedy. Everything Don Knotts' [staring as Mr. Chicken or Luther Heggs] does is hilarious. This movie is hard to find. You can rent it at your local blockbuster or other movie rental place. You can also try to purchase it off the Internet. This is a family film. The movie is not rated, but I would say it would be rated G. It doesn't have any foul language or violence in this movie. Even though it was made in 1965 it does have color.
My family and I were watching the movie and we were cracking up the whole way through. Everyone that has watched it thought it was hilarious. The movie is a 4 ½ star rating. I don't think this movie is for little kids. The reason is, is that it doesn't have any bright color and they won't pay much attention. I would say it would be for ages ten and up.
The movie is about a guy named Luther Heggs who works with a newspaper and tries to write an article about anything he can find. But, everything that he wants to write about the other people think it's crazy and stupid. Then the next day or so later the other workers told him that he could go to the murder house and write about what happens in there.
Will Luther go into the murder house? If he does, will he make it out?
Barney Fife comes to the big screen.......2007-03-30
Don Knotts was a smart man. He knew his abilities as an actor. He took his famous Barney Fife character to the big screen. In this movie he was known as Luther Hages (at-a-boy Luthers) This is basically a movie version of the Andy Griffith show only without Andy, Opie, or Aunt Bea. Otis is in there, along with Clara Edwards and a bunch of other character actors seen from the show. Also, the second Darrin Stevens (Bewitched) is there as his boss. This is a fun movie. Typical storyline where a little man who gets no respect does everything to impress the prettiest girl in town (and she was). And he becomes the hero and gets the girl at the end. I can watch this movie over and over. It's from a simplier time and is ageless, just like its TV equivlent. You just can't help wanting Barney(or Luther) to win everytime.
Old movies only get better when you watch them later........2007-03-25
No one beats Don Knotts acting like a nervous nelly. His movies are classics, especially this one.

The previously released "North by Northwest" is also included in the 10-disc Signature Collection. Each of the 9 films in the collection shows why Hitchcock is regarded as one of Hollywood's most esteemed and important directors, and also brings legendary stars to the digital front including Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, Montgomery Clift and many others.
Strangers on a Train - En route from Washington, D.C., champion tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets pushy playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker). What begins as a chance encounter turns into a series of morbid confrontations, as Bruno manipulates his way into Guy's life. Bruno is eager to kill his father and knows Guy wants to marry a senator's daughter (Ruth Roman) but can't get a divorce from his wife. So Bruno suggests the men swap murders, which would leave no traceable clues or possible motives. Though Guy refuses, it won't be easy to rid himself of the psychopathic Bruno. Hitchcock's daughter Patricia appears in this film. The extra features included on the DVD are: Alternate 'preview' version of the film; Commentary by director Peter Bogdanovich, Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stephano, Strangers on a Train author Patricia Highsmith and biographer Andrew Wilson; New making-of documentary Strangers on a Train: A Hitchcock Classic, with Farley Granger, film historian Richard Schickel, Patricia Hitchcock O'Connell and other Hitchcock family members and colleagues recalling the making of this suspense landmark; Three intriguing featurettes: The Hitchcocks on Hitch, Strangers on a Train: The Victim's P.O.V., Strangers on a Train by M. Night Shyamalan; Alfred Hitchcock's Historical Meeting, a vintage newsreel.
Each DVD will be presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition and will include the original theatrical trailer, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish.

Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-06
This collection is absolutely fabulous. All the movies are remastered and are excellent quality especially on a big screen. Just as I remembered them. Too cool...
a must for a fan.......2007-03-08
As a long time fan of Hitchcock, I am always looking for more. I have approx. 20 of his films on DVD. This collection has some that I had never seen before. In addition, the "making of" special features are great for someone who wants to know what made Hitch so unique as a film director. I have (and will) spend many hours viewing these discs.

Customer Reviews:
Young Arthur Conan Doyle works with the "real" Sherlock Holmes.......2007-05-20
I have read most of the original Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, but I have avoided "new" Holmes stories by other writers. However, I have enjoyed the creative cinematic efforts that have dealt with the master detective, from "The Seven Percent Solution" to "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother," albeit with varying degrees of respect and affection. In that spirit I sought out "Dr. Bell and Mr. Doyle: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes." The sub-title is necessary for those who do not know that Doyle's inspiration for Holmes came, in part, from Dr. Joseph Bell, one of Doyle's teachers.
Bell was a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh's medical school, where he taught students the importance of close observation in making a diagnosis. This made him a forerunner in forensic pathology at a time when science was not yet a crucial part of solving crimes. Today we live in the world of what is called the "C.S.I. Effect," where juries demand the same sort of detailed forensic evidence they see on television, but Bell was breaking new ground. Doyle met Bell in 1877 when the future author was a medical student, and served for a while as his clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Much of Sherlock Holmes was clearly inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's creation, C. Auguste Dupin, but it was Dr. Bell's cutting edge work in deductive reasoning that gave the master detective his chief skill.
The conceit of "Dr. Bell and Mr. Doyle" is that the young Doyle (Robin Laing) does more than study with Dr. Bell (Ian Richardson), becoming, in this fictional narrative, the "Watson" to the good Doctor's "Holmes." That should be enough to whet your appetite to check out this British made for television movie, originally shown as "Murder Rooms: "The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes." The biggest the literary creations and the "real" Bell and Doyle is that even though Bell is called upon as a consultant the police find his every hypotheses to be preposterous and the young Doyle has trouble believing Bell's deductions are anything more than cheap parlor trips. Another key elements in the initial story are the admittance of women to the University of Edinburgh's medical school. Doyle becomes enamored with one of the new students, Elspeth Scott (Dolly Wells), who is a target of the Bible quoting misogynist, Crawford (Joel Strachan). Meanwhile, Lady Sarah Carlisle (Ruth Platt), the wife of Sir Henry Carlyle (Charles Dance), has become ill and Bell's diagnosis becomes another point of contention between the student and his would be mentor. These plot elements underscore the critique of Victorian society as having little regard for women, whether they are prostitutes or the wives of members of Parliament. So there are myriad ways in which Bell is swimming against the tide.
Having thoroughly enjoyed Ian Richardson as Francis Urquhart in the "House of Cards" trilogy, seeing him play a more traditional hero rather than one more reminiscent of Shakespeare's Richard the III is an absolute treat, even if it means Laing's Doyle has a hard time being near the same playing field. The game afoot in this 2000 BBC production is within the Holmes tradition, although my favorite moment is when Bell makes the mistake of offering some devastating deductions regarding Doyle's pocket watch. I round down on this one only because the ending was too reminiscent of "Young Sherlock Holmes" for my taste. I was also at a loss to explain why the minimal framing device for the story was Doyle's decision to kill off his creation in "The Final Problem," and the angry reaction of his readers. But now that I am aware that this is but the opening gambit in a series of mysteries to be solved by Dr. Bell and Mr. Doyle, I will defer judgment on that score until the others are available on DVD on this side of the pond (although I certainly share the impulse to just get a new toy that can handle PAL-discs so that I do not have to wait for shows that might never become available in the U.S.
Dr. Bell is Sherlock Holmes.......2007-02-25
Dr. Bell and Mr. Doyle - The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes is one of two DVD's I have featuring Ian Richarson as Dr. Bell. Both DVD's are fantastic. The story is intriging and actually takes place before the Holmes stories were written. The film features Dr. Arthur Conan Doyle and his teacher Dr. Bell. Bell was the basis of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character and was one of the first to use forensics to help solve crimes. I highly recommend this DVD to any Sherlock fan. I hope more are coming.
A must have for Sherlock Fans.......2007-01-11
Good movie but a bit to gruesome for young audiences.
Worth it........2006-11-10
On its own, or combined with the follow-up series Murder Rooms, 'Dr. Bell and Mr. Doyle' is well worth the price. While I was already familiar with the follow up series, I was sadly unaware of the telefilm that started it all. I'm very pleased with the purchase.
Fine sound and video quality, though lacking in other features. You get what you pay for, it seems. I recommend it as I recommended the Murder Rooms DVD. If you like Holmes and Victoriana, it's a sure bet. If not, look elsewhere.
Dr. Bell, meet Sherlock Holmes. A fine production starring Ian Richardson and with assorted corpses.......2006-09-05
If you were a medical student at the University of Edinburgh in 1876, be prepared for cold, gray, grimy days, complacent and pompous professors, class consciousness and the occasional dissection. If you were lucky, as the young Conan Doyle was, you might wind up as a clerk assisting the brilliant Dr. Joseph Bell, a forensic surgeon and one of the professors. In Dr. Bell and Mr. Doyle (subtitled, The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes), Bell, played by Ian Richardson, believes that one must "observe the small facts upon which large inferences depend." He can take a man's pocket watch, even though newly cleaned, and determine that the owner was poor but had come from a well-off family, that he had periods of income but they never lasted, that he was an alcoholic and that he was descending into madness. Bell can study a poorly clad man standing on stage in front of a classroom of students and determine, among other things, that the man was recently discharged from the army, earned a living as a horse driver and who drove two horses, one bay and the other white. This all comes in handy for two reasons. First, Bell uses his powers of observation and deduction to find criminals of the worst sort who otherwise would have been missed by the police. Second, and this is true, the real-life Bell served as the inspiration for Conan Doyle's great creation when Doyle gave up medicine for writing...Sherlock Holmes, of course.
Young Doyle, played by Robin Laing, initially doubts Dr. Bell's methods. Gradually, observing Bell in action and being challenged by Bell to use his own powers of deduction, Doyle becomes a believer. "You see," Bell says to Doyle one afternoon at the Edinburgh morgue, "I believe that crimes can be diagnosed in the same fashion as disease if we use the same techniques. So...what can you glean from the late Mrs. Canning here?"
While Doyle is learning from Bell, Bell and Doyle are caught up in several crimes which might be related. They involve a nobleman who often visits a house of ill repute and whose wife becomes ill; a mute street beggar who plays the violin for coins, and who dies in convulsions; a room bespattered and filled with blood, and then slaughtered sheep are discovered with their eyes gouged out; a woman who dies in a locked room with a husband who is perhaps too helpful; a pair of severed human ears placed in a box and delivered to one of the few women who are studying, with great opposition from most of the teachers and many of the male students, to be doctors; a woman of the streets who was given herbal pills and now is vomiting her life out. In fact, some of these cases truly are related, and the suspects include a moralistic, furious fellow student and an unknown psychopath who believes in simple, straight-forward evil. Bell, with help from Doyle, eventually pulls the pieces together. The conclusion, however, is not entirely satisfactory. There is loss and the promise of retribution. Even more, there is a sense that a part two was waiting to be filmed and, for whatever reason, wasn't made. Eventually there were four additional mysteries featuring Ian Richardson as Dr. Bell and a different actor as Conan Doyle.
Through it all, Doyle and Elspeth Scott, one of the women students, hesitantly discover a mutual affection that could easily grow into love. Their recognition of a possible romance comes while she dissects a corpse's right knee. One of the attractions of the production is that it doesn't shy away from depicting the reality of autopsies and forensic experiments. We first encounter Dr. Bell while he is whipping the buttocks of a corpse, prior to firing a bullet into the dead man's chest. Throughout we see the reality of how the poor live in Edinburgh, the damp, cobbled streets, the constant chill, the smeared faces of the children and the grubbiness of the prostitutes. Even the medical students don't look too well washed at times. The production values are high and there is a solid depth of acting.
Ian Richardson makes the production work. Laing does a fine job as the sincere and somewhat callow Doyle. Richardson, however, gives us a complex character who can at times be impatient, even irascible, but who has a sense of humor and irony and who has a strong feeling of humanity for those who are unfortunate, sick and poor. We can see how Bell slowly grows to feel affection for Doyle and how, in a moment of tragedy, Bell can provide comfort and strength to his student.
The DVD transfer is first rate. There are one or two inconsequential extras, such as cast lists. One of the pleasures of this production, if you are a reader of the Sacred Texts, is to identify references to some of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. I found two, but I've been told there are several others. The affair of the watch references The Sign of Four. The severed ears are a key element in The Cardboard Box.

Description
Jekyll and Hyde get a sex change! When slimy stud Dr. Chris Leeder (Jack Buddliner) takes possession of Dr. Jekyll's ancient notebook, he quickly becomes obsessed with the murderous sex crimes of the original Mr. Hide. Ignoring the notebook's warning that the Jekyll and Hyde formula "makes people appear as they really are," the demented doc mixes the potion and promptly turns into..."Miss Hyde" (Jane Tsentas), a sexy blonde in a mini-skirt who just happens to be a homicidal nymphomaniac! After enjoying a lesbian romp with Leeder's secretary (legendary skinflick starlet Rene Bond), and the sadistic slaughter of a drunken sailor (ouch!), Miss Hide decides to pay a visit to Leeder's fiancee (Jennifer Brooks) and permanently cancel the wedding...Gender-bending adult horror, "The Adult Version of Jekyll & Hide" is another outrageous classic from the Mighty Monarch of Sexploitation, producer David F. Friedman.
Customer Reviews:
for lover's of rene.......2007-04-08
really only good if you are a rene bond completist, there is much of her here but not much else when she isn't
Not your typical sexploitation film.......2007-01-10
Compared to other films of the sexploitation genre, the "Adult Version of Jekyll and Hide" is well done. I think the take on the Jekyll and Hyde theme is goofy and ridiculous, but it makes for a very entertaining movie. The acting, the sets, and the script are all decent. Aside from being a nudie film, this movie also doubles as a suspense/horror movie as there are some violent scenes which are quite graphic. Nothing to scare anybody, but definitely more than your typical sexploitation movie.
The film also features an entertaining commentary by the producer, David Friedman, as well as the theatrical trailer and some sexploitation ads. The film quality is crisp and clear. Sometimes I prefer watching these movies with a little more grain: it gives the movies a bit more bite and adds to the sleaziness of it all!
THE ADULT VERSION OF JEKYLL & HIDE!.......2001-10-04
Yes! Before there was BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA! Before there was MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTIN! There was THE ADULT VERSION OF JEKYLL & HIDE! That's right, its HIDE not HYDE! Because in this ADULTS ONLY version of the famous story by ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON (Author of TREASURE ISLAND and other great books!) the good doctor is interested in the murderous sex crimes of the ORIGINAL Mr. Hyde! When he recreates the experiments he transforms into--(wait for it!)--the blonde bombshell Miss Hyde! Not to worry, this alter ego also has an APPETITE for SEX and MURDER! This is a film that knows what the audiences wanted in 1972 and certainly tries to give it to them! And with this DVD you get the proverbial much, much more! AUDIO COMMENTARY from the producer! Plus neat stuff from the FRIEDMAN GALLERY OF EXPLOITATIVE ART! Oh, and the ORIGINAL TRAILER!
Warped..of course!.......2001-02-25
Being a fan of all things "Dr.J/ Hyde" I sought out this curio for the sheer novelty of the thing. It's definitely not for everyone (buy YOU aren't everyone or else you wouldn't be reading this review!!) so the cult-film fanatic will enjoy. Basic story with the good doctor discovering Dr.Jekyll's old diary. That's basically the story with the doc transforming into a beatiful babe about mid-way through. Some masochistic violence (Hyde-style) ensues. Cool T&A throughout. The three rating is for good cult-film style fun, with 1 star for "Ms.Hide"?
Cool.......2000-07-06
Not much for storyline here. It's a classic Jekyll and Hyde movie with probably more T&A then needed. But I mean, come on, you don't watch these movies for the great story, right>

"I feel like I've been handed a new life," says Tom Ripley at a crucial turning point of this well-cast, stylishly crafted psychological thriller. And indeed he has, because the devious, impoverished Ripley (played with subtle depth by Matt Damon) has just traded his own identity for that of Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), the playboy heir to a shipping fortune who has become Ripley's model for a life worth living. Having been sent by Dickie's father to retrieve the errant son from Italy, Ripley has smoothly ingratiated himself with Dickey and his lovely, unsuspecting fiancée, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow). In due course, the sheer evil of Ripley's amoral scheme will be revealed.
Superbly adapted from the acclaimed novel by Patricia Highsmith (also the basis of the acclaimed French version, Purple Noon), The Talented Mr. Ripley is writer-director Anthony Minghella's impressive follow-up to his Oscar-winning triumph The English Patient. Re-creating late-1950s Italy in exacting detail, the film captures the sensuousness of la dolce vita while suspensefully developing the fracturing of Ripley's mind as his crimes grow increasingly desperate. And where Hitchcock was necessarily discreet with the homosexual subtext of Highsmith's Strangers on a Train, Minghella brings it out of the closet, increasing the dramatic tension and complexity of Ripley's psychological breakdown. Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Cate Blanchett are excellent in pivotal supporting roles, and the film's final image is utterly effective: Ripley's talents have gone too far, and this study of class distinction, obsession, and deadly desire reaches a disturbing yet richly appropriate conclusion. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Unsettling.......2007-06-28
If there were separate categories, I'd give this movie five stars for acting and cinematography, three stars for writing, and one star for how it made me feel. I think I was expecting something more along the lines of Matt Damon's "Bourne" films ... and I got something very different. I don't want to ruin it for anyone who wants to watch the film, but it starts out strange in the sense of mysterious and intriguing, and ends up strange in the sense of weird and kind of grotesque. When I finished watching it, I was left in an odd emotional state: kind of shocked, kind of awed, kind of sick to my stomach, and kind of sad. Like I said, though, the acting and cinematography were amazing.
Hitchcock film for the 90's.......2007-04-14
The entire time that I watched this movie, I felt as if I was missing something, that there was something I wasn't cluing in on. I rented "The Talented Mr. Ripley" without the slightest clue about what the story entailed.
Matt Damon portrays the mysterious Mr. Ripley, who, more or less, remains a mystery throughout the film. I was intrigued at how, when you first see him on screen, you are given the impression that he is nothing more than a shy, innocent, and intellectual young man who pretty much keeps to himself. However, this image is only visable for the first five minutes or so, and is virtually shattered once he accepts the offer to go to Italy in search of Mr. Greenleaf's son, Dickie. I was fascinated at how rapidly his personality altered, and suddenly I understood that he was rather odd, as he deceived Mr. Greenleaf in the first place by wearing a Princeton jacket and pretending that he knew Dickie.
As the film progresses and it becomes more apparent there is something deeply wrong with Damon, you almost begin to root for him to get away with his malicious acts. He is so effective as the quietly psychotic Ripley because his actions do not seem planned. He just kind of takes what is not his without reason.
The beauty of Rome, Venice, and Gwyneth Paltrow tends to hide the inner turmoil going on with Damon's character and Jude Law is oblivious to it most of the time. The madness builds slowly and Law, as the target of Damon's consuming desire, realizes it too late. Law has the looks and mannerisms of a 50's matinee idol which fits perfectly within the context of the film.
Some people have said The Talented Mr. Ripley is like a Hitchcock film for the 90's. I would have to agree. Damon's ability to portray a fully realized, human leach is amazing at times and the fact that I actually had some sympathy for him proves it. There are scenes of utter shock and dismay, but it is the drowning build to the inevitable murder and mayhem that grabs you.
Reeled me in hook, line, and sinker.......2007-02-07
A sleek, sexy, suspenseful gem!
The haunting score had me hooked by the opening credits, and the film's momentum kept me glued to the edge of my seat to the very end. If you're looking for a thriller packed with action and gore, this probably isn't the film for you. But if you're in the mood for a masterful script, radiant cinematography, subtle & engrossing acting, and a sexy-cool storyline that will leave you wanting more, you've found your film.
"The Green Mile" beat out this movie???!!!!!.......2007-02-04
"The Talented Mr. Ripley" deserved to win "Best Picture" in 1999. That it didn't even receive a nomination when "The Green Mile" did was the latest in jaw-dropping Academy travesties--the most hideous being "Dances With Wolves" beating out "Goodfellas" for the top prize in 1990.
This film is a masterpiece in every respect. Incredible, incredible acting from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jude Law (these two are standouts, but the other performances are also excellent). Beautiful cinematography in Italy. A gripping, complex story, and a thought-provoking exploration of class stratification and angst over sexual orientation amidst the rigid American societal norms of the 1950s. When I saw this movie, I thought to myself that film-lovers needn't yearn for decades long past: "Ripley" demonstrated that the golden age of American cinema is right now.
Was it a case of mass delusion among Academy members that caused them to overlook this movie? I'm sure that history will prove that they were very wrong in 1999, just as it has shown that they were very wrong in 1990. How often does "Dances With Wolves" appear on any "Greatest Films" lists these days?
One-half of a great movie.......2006-12-05
Someone correctly called The Talented Mr. Ripley one-half of a great movie, the great half being the first hour or so when Tom Ripley, a self-described nobody, meets the glamorous Dickie Greenleaf and becomes infatuated with the sweet life in Italy circa 1958. The second half is a Hitchcock type thriller which suffers because Jude Law is no longer on screen. Matt Damon's Tom is too sensitive and sympathetic to be a completely convincing murderer. The ending, however, is very effective, and the cast is excellent throughout.

SEND IN THE CLONE.......2003-11-28
MR. MURDER is an okay adaptation of Koontz's novel. It's biggest fault is actually the casting of Stephen Baldwin in the all important leading role. Baldwin's range is extremely limited, and sometimes there was little difference between the real writer and the clone. This is especially true in the first half of the movie; later on, he tries a little harder and he salvages what little he can of his performance. Other than that, there are some interesting suspenseful moments; Julie Warner tries hard as Baldwin's wife, but she has to overcome a lot of inadequacy from Baldwin; James Coburn is wasted but the pro he is, he puts more into his smaller role than Baldwin did. Thomas Haden Church was awful. Monotone, boring, he came off even worse than Baldwin!!!
The movie has some suspenseful moments, but it's not as good as the book. However, overall, it's fairly entertaining and not as awful as some may think.
It's pretty awful........2002-03-06
Stephen Baldwin is a horror writer who discovers he has an identical, murderous clone. This silly Dean Koontz adaptation is based off of his equally silly novel, so it's no surprise the script has all the typical Koontz plot elements: Government conspiracy, heroes going on the run, and a final fight in the middle of nowhere. The only difference is that the mystery is revealed at the beginning! Overlong miniseries (Which actually features nudity in the video version)features countless leapholes in logic, unconvincing special effects, and a hilariously wooden Stephen Baldwin as the writer and killer. You can count the number of good Koontz novels and movies on one hand (Phantoms, anyone?), and this sure as hell isn't one of them.
A decent made-for-TV movie.......2001-01-10
In general, Dean Koontz books haven't been translated to movies very successfully. This one made the transition better than most. ("Watchers", "Whispers", and "Phantoms" were appalling. The best adaptation, "Intensity", another made-for-TV movie, was never released after broadcast.) This movie follows the book rather well and, several times, generates a nice level of suspense. Obviously, much had to be cut or skimmed over to make it fit time constraints: better that than bogging down the pace with detail. Steven Baldwin wouldn't have been my choice for the lead, but he performs it adequately. James Coburn was wasted. As a made-for-TV, there isn't a widescreen version and the sound is only 2-channel stereo. I'm glad I saw it when first broadcast in two parts; it was good to see it uninterrupted when it was released, but I'm not willing to shell out the bucks to own it.
never again.......2000-02-20
never ever put any money towards this movie, i wish there were a rating less than one star cause this thing was horrible, talk about predictable i and everyone who watched it had the entire plot of the movie mapped out 30mins into it.
Koontz Fans Will Be Disapointed.......1999-09-14
I am a Dean Koontz fan and I have to say that this movie is one of the bad translations of his work. If you are not a fan of the book then by all means tell us what you think. I cann't be that objective because I am. So, if you haven't read the book, watch it. If you have read it, you will be disappointed. How does that saying go? It's never as good as the book.

Had potential, but failed badly........2006-12-14
I liked the basic premise the film was based on, the amateurish home movie rumor of the Manson family. I didn't even mind the fact that it is silent. The movie is awful because like other reviewers below said, the guy in this movie doesn't even resemble Manson, except he's got a beard. There is no acting, or even attempt at acting. When several of the characters that are supposed to be women are actually men in obvious drag, and they act ridiculous, the movie lost all hope for me. It fails in every category. Tongue in cheek or not. This movie is wasted money. It's sad when the best part of a DVD are the extras, and indeed with Manson Family Movies, you should skip watching the movie and go directly to the extras. Avoid wasting precious 88 minutes of your life.
FilmFanaddict.com Review of Manson Family Movies (by David Carter).......2006-05-25
The killings attributed to the Manson Family are, in their essence, no different than crimes that happened on a daily basis in the 1960's. Though gruesome, multiple homicides and even serial murder were not new concepts at the time. Why, then, did these particular crimes capture America's attention to such a degree? Much like it's films, Hollywood's most famous murders were tailored perfectly for public consumption. The most well known victim, Sharon Tate, was a beautiful young starlet. Playing opposite her as the villain was Charles Manson, a larger-than-life character that seemed to embody the worst aspects of the permissive sixties culture. Conservative America was distrustful of the youth movement, and Charles Manson's very existence confirmed all of their fears. Many have attempted to bring the killings to the screen with varying degrees of success. John Aes-Nihil's MANSON FAMILY MOVIES brings a fresh perspective to this familiar topic.
MANSON FAMILY MOVIES is structured to resemble just that: home movies shot by members of the Manson Family. Working without dialogue, Aes-Nihil attempts to bring a narrative structure to a collage of images that are both graphic and disorienting at times. The viewers are taken through key events in the Manson Family's history. Additionally, the omniscient camera also shows the victims prior to the murders. Aes-Nihil uses a blend of concrete facts (to which he brings a high level of detail) and urban legends surrounding the crime, which are shown in gloriously exploitive sequences.
The lack of dialogue is going to be the main stumbling block for most viewers. In lieu of dialogue, Aes-Nihil will occasionally use crudely drawn title cards to convey character's speech. The film is not silent, however, the soundtrack is compiled from the recordings of Manson and his Family members, lending a macabre authenticity to the proceedings. The lack of dialogue creates a problem for viewers unfamiliar with some of the subtle details of the case. This is clearly a film for devotees of the crime, as an intimate knowledge of it is all but required to follow the film closely.
Though it shows the Family and their crimes in great detail, MANSON FAMILY MOVIES does not glorify them. By using the "home video" format, Aes-Nihil is presenting the Family's activities as part of the collective memories of a nation. Just as your trip to the beach when you were nine is a part of your memory and an event that shaped your life, the Manson Family murders are part of the memory of America. It's an event that seems less than real now, like a movie you've seen in the past. Aes-Nihil's film shows the murders as an event that transcends a mere crime story and instead a crucial event in shaping society after the sixties.
One-star "Buyer's Regret" reviewers don't get the joke.......2006-01-14
If you approach this low low budget "shocker" as an armchair "criminologist" thinking it will give you a detailed police procedural of the infamous Tate-LoBianca slayings, then you probably expect yet another rote re-telling of attorney Vincent Bugliosi's "Helter Skelter". Well, it's not. Someone's tongue was firmly implanted in cheek while making this film, and its entertainment value depends largely on how developed your sense of "camp" is (the glowing endorsement from bad taste meister/ironist John Waters on the jacket should be clue #1!). The film was PURPOSELY shot "amateurishly" on grainy super-8 to simulate what the infamous Manson "family" home movies might have looked like. Supposedly, some footage does exist, although it would have likely been of "daily life" activity at the Spahn Ranch (only a moron would believe that they would have had time to film the actual murders while perpertrating them!). This is one film that benefits 100% from the director's commentary track, and I highly recommend watching with it "on". The commentary actually makes this the "JFK" of Manson films, because you learn some interesting "counter-myths" as to what may have motivated the murders. To tell you the truth, the director's take-that several members of the Tate household were using and selling "MDA" and dealt the drugs through members of the Manson family, pointing to a classic "drug deal gone sour" scenario, actually seems more pragmatic than the "zombie hippie killers held in thrall of a messianic cult leader" explanation. At any rate, I think the director makes it quite clear that this was designed as a work of entertainment, not of enlightenment-and taken in that spirit, it works. Obviously not for all tastes, but definitely worth a spin for the jaded viewer.
absolute garbage!.......2005-12-19
This is by far the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire 40 years of life. The acting (if you call it that) is low rent, the entire filming is a giant charade. The guy playing Manson is pathetic and doesn't even resemble him. Some of the actors playing female family members are actually men wearing wigs.
This is so bad I can't even put it in words. If you are a Manson buff, look elsewhere, nothing could be worse.....PERIOD!
Even more boring than your own home movies.......2005-09-17
Don't even waste your money renting this piece of crap. I am fascinated by the Tate-LaBianca murders, so I bought this film, intrigued that it was filmed at several of the actual locations associated with the case. What a disappointment this was! This stinker stars a Mexican guy who bears a closer resemblance to Cheech Marin than Charlie Manson, and an ensemble cast of cross-dressing actors who would embarrass a high-school drama club.
Every scene in the film is cheesier than a bag of Doritos corn chips, the silliest parts being the corn-syrup "blood" and the laughable "murder" scenes. I've seen twelve-year-olds in haunted houses who were scarier than these folks. A total waste of time and money. I sure hope no one made any money off this joke of a film.

another great Wong movie.......2004-06-29
Mr Wong was always a fave of mine. Karloff played him and so did Keye Luke. It's so nice to see this movie in print and at a good price! Thanks Alpha!

Don't waste your time, UNHHHHHHH!.......2002-05-23
If you like poor acting, glorification of "ghettoes and gangsters and guns" (oh, my), outrageously dated dialougue, crude sexuality, and needless violence (as well as hard core gagster-rap), then throw your money away on this mess. ... As Master P (Percy Miller) himself would say, UNHHHHHHHH!
Good storyline....Bad Camara Footage.......2002-04-25
This movie is quite tight. this sh** keeps it real for most part but just exagarates about how "bad" Master P was/is. But is basicly acurate. Every seen in this movie is tight its more than good enough to rent this is a "classic" that needs to be owned on your "Hall of Fame" movie collection shelf. The only bad part is it looks like they filmed it with a home video camara with the poor film quality and some bad camara angles. (NEEDS TO BE REMASTERED ON DVD!)
strictly for TRU players.......2001-06-17
This movie is surprisingly good.Master P does a good job of portraying himself in this movie as a young thug.Owes more than a little to Menace 2 society and Boyz n' the hood(note,P gets shot in the shoulder ,just like in Menace 2 society).Silkk the Shocker plays P's younger brother Silkk.C-Murder(who, along with Silkk the Shocker is P's brother in real life)has about 10 minutes in the movie as P's younger brother Q.A realistic(if not sometimes exaggerated )count of life in the Calliope projects.
Stay tuned for music videos after the movie.
Awsome but some boring parts.......2001-04-22
IT is Master P's best getto movie Note: This is NOT a movie for the whole family It was great alough there was some boring parts in it that will make you FF threw it but it was great.
big sid bling in 'nawlins not 'bout it.......2000-07-13
big ups to massa p for this golden ghetto fabulous masterpiece, chronicling his rise to fame from the streets (this must not be a true story because they left out the scene where p sells his soul to the devil so that people will buy and actually listen to his horrible, horrible music (and i stress horrible). i liked alot about this movie. i didn't so much like the bad acting, the bad camera shots/angles, the plot (i use the term loosely), the passing script that was probably written on napkins as filming went along, or the glorification of violence and abuse to women. no, i liked the underlying theme of homoeroticism between p and his boyz. you could tell that in all of their b-boy posturing there was a real sense of longing and desire to express their physical attraction for one another in the hot, sweaty, dirty south. if they would have centered the movie around that i would have definitely been more 'bout it.
