Product Description
In the center of a large and unknowing city, a group of young women huddle together in a small apartment, tending to a sick friend whose skin is rotting to the bone. These women have been cursed with a secret malady that has made them members of an urban subculture, where their only way of survival is to continually feed on humans. They have been forced to abandon their once normal lives to now prowl the dark streets and alleyways in search of their next victim. But these hunters are also being hunted. There is a mysterious man walking these same streets, who will stop at nothing until they are abolished - one by one. Welcome to the doomed universe of Andrew Parkinson's Dead Creatures

Petula (Rachel Weisz) meets Dorothy (Susan Lynch) when Dorothy smacks a lead pipe into the head of Petula's boyfriend, who was strangling Petula at the time. Thus begins the darkly comic thriller Beautiful Creatures--a little bit Thelma & Louise, a little bit Alfred Hitchcock at his most sardonic. When Petula's boyfriend dies, she and Dorothy cook up a scheme to extort money out of the boyfriend's rich and vicious older brother--a scheme that would probably have fallen to pieces until an investigating police detective named George starts to help it along for devious reasons of his own. Soon Dorothy and Petula are coping with a bitten-off finger, Dorothy's own nasty boyfriend, a salesclerk with a bondage fetish, and more. Fans of movies with a similarly deadpan tone (like Bound, Fargo, and Pulp Fiction) will love the film's caustic humor, and both Weisz and Lynch are delightful. Fast-paced and unpredictable, Beautiful Creatures is a witty thriller that deserves attention. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Humorous, startling and entertaining film.......2007-05-31

Two beautiful women meet by chance when one is being throttled by her boyfriend in an alley. The other also suffering an abusive relationship picks up a pipe to aid the woman and accidentally kills the man. The women concoct a kidnapping to cover up the murder but nothing goes as planned in this dark Comedy of Errors meets Thelma and Louise; except with a happier ending... at least for the women. It is a humorous, startling and entertaining film with a lot of evil men who like to threaten, control and abuse women. The women are meek and compliant in the beginning but really come into their own by the end.

    4 out of 5 stars Like a celluloid `little baby nothing' .......2006-07-10

Rachel Weisz's vulnerable intensity steals almost every scene and is loaded with pathos. As with Jude Law in `The Talented Mr. Ripley', the assumption that every character and viewer will fall slightly in love with her is the crux of the film, and because of her performance its justified. 'Beautiful Creatures' is set against a shattered urban backdrop that is oppressive in its ugliness, and Weisz's beauty offers a powerful contrast to this, and consequently creates a powerful bond between her and the audience which causes the viewer to be rooting for her as she tries to fight off the onslaught of male aggression. There is a disturbing undercurrent of sexual violence in the film, and the possibility of her being somehow violated is returned to with alarming frequency. You can't help but feel caught up in her plight and constantly rooting for some kind of revenge on the male perpetrators. I'm not sure if there was a feminist agenda to the script- the notion that pornography leads to violence is also revisited. The presentation of the male actors was extremely thought provoking and powerful. Although the ending might seem obvious, I felt it was satisfying and it broke the mould of many postmodern films which leave the ends untied in order to retain an air of mystery.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Dark Comedy And Ms. Weisz Is So HOT!!!.......2005-09-24

This movie is about two women who are caught in bad relationships until certain events occure to free them of their domestic shackles. These two ladies might be abused by their men but are in no way "Profesional Victims' as so many women in Hollywood movies are portrayed.Ms. Weisz is beautiful as always and has a very sexy English accent and a great flair for comedy which is why I give this movie 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Sans Brad Pitt--still the better film.......2005-04-25

Two young women, one exceptionally beautiful, are involved with highly abusive men. They seem unable to extract themselves from these indiviual violent relationships until events pull them apart. In spite of the violence, this is actually a darkly humorous movie, laugh out loud, and well worth seeing. There are no decent men in this picture, all are twisted or corrupt and violent. That is too bad. A sense of balance here would have been better. The acting is very good and the background of Glasgow is a pleasant change. There is a Thelma and Louise quality to it without the attributes of Brad Pitt. That said, this is the better film.

4 out of 5 stars The movie has style.......2003-10-23

Sometimes the plot is not important and sometimes neither is acting. I actually found the acting in this movie quite mediocre. Nonetheless, all this is not important. The movie has style and you can see this from the start. It is quite rare and I value this very much.

4 out of 5 stars The first Dragon Ball Z movie.......2007-05-27

Dead Zone AKA Return My Gohan. The first Dragon Ball Z movie.

    INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z series is one of the finest animes out there, as any fan of Japanese animation will tell you. The series has a "love it or hate it" reputation, but those fans who get into the series are totally immersed by it for a number of reasons. Young people love the series for the fast-paced action and adventure, while older fans enjoy it for the sheer number of characters, and the way they are developed and evolve over the course of time. It's no wonder the series is considered Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, and by far the best of the three Dragon Ball series. When Toei animation made Dragon Ball into an anime, they didn't copy Toriyama's mangas verbatim. They added in many sagas and plot elements not in the manga, often as a result so that the manga and anime were released at the same pace. Toei even created movies based on the series! There were thirteen movies, two television specials, and one OVA/OAV. While not usually canon to the storyline, they are an undeniable part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that can't be ignored.

    OVERVIEW:
This is the first of the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies.

    THE STORY:
It's a year before Dragon Ball Z begins, and four years since Goku defeated Piccolo Jr. at the World Martial Arts Tournament. Goku has settled down in a peaceful life with new new wife Chi Chi and son, Gohan. Everything is going great until monsters attack Chi Chi and the Ox King, and kidnap Gohan. Garlic Jr., a demon who is the son of a being who wanted to ascend to the role of Kami but didn't succeed (due to his evil motives), is out for revenge. He wants to wipe out the world's inhabitants and create a new dark age. Goku sets off to rescue his son, and save the world once again.

    REVIEW OF STORY:
A lot of people tend to bash this movie, and I don't really see why. It's a great story (a nice "prequel to DBZ itself.) The action here is considerably more hand-to-hand (as opposed to energy attacks) than in later DBZ sagas/stories/movies/etc., which is a nice change from what you may be used to. Piccolo's scenes (particularly the one where he launches an all-out assault on one of Garlic's henches) are excellent. Gohan gets two hilarious scenes, but I won't spoil them (of course plenty of other reviews do, so if you're curious, just read them.) Overall it's a good story. A bit boring at times and not the best, but it works.

    OFFICIAL?
Not likely. Not only did this story (like all the movies) not occur in the original manga, but there are too many plot holes. Goku's friends all know Gohan here, but didn't know him one year later when Z begins. Same with Gohan's hidden power, which surprised Goku and Piccolo in the series despite them seeing it in this movie. Garlic Jr. wants immortality, but tries to kill Kami/Piccolo - which would have rendered the Dragon Balls useless had his assault succeeded. Weird. Ultimately, the movie doesn't fit in the storyline (rendering the anime-only Garlic Jr. saga false as well), but it possibly could have happened in the alternate Future Trunks timeline.

    REVIEW OF DVD:
There are two releases of this film on DVD - Pioneer and FUNimation.

The Pioneer DVD is poorly designed in that the movie starts automatically and the menus are difficult to navigate. However, it has better bonus features than the newer FUNimation DVD, not to mention a better dub (see the next section of my review for more information.) Get this DVD if you plan to watch the dub more often than the sub.

The FUNimation DVD has easy-to-navigate menus, and a better Japanese subtitled version, thanks to the always-great translating skills of Steven J. Simmons. While the Pioneer sub version uses English-ized versions of Japanese titles/terms, Simmons' subtitles retain Japanese titles (Kun. Sama, etc.) However it has weak bonus material. Get this DVD is you plan to watch the sub more often than the dub.

    THE DUBBED VERSION:
There are two dubs of this movie - Pioneer and FUNimation.

Pioneer's dub of Dead Zone is PHENOMENAL. It has the original Japanese score as background music, and the dialogue is almost identical to the Japanese version. My only issues with the dub are the choices of some of the voice actors - this is when Peter Kelamis took over as Goku, and he couldn't hold a candle to the earlier Ian James Corlett. Likewise, Roshi has this horrendous squeaky voice, but he's only in the movie for less than a minute, so no biggie there. By far the better of the two dubs. Get this DVD if you prefer watching the dub.

FUNimation's dub? Not so good. The original Japanese score is replaced by the music you'd expect in a dubbed DBZ movie, the "Gohan is drunk" scene is ruined, and a ton of dialogue was changed around. Why couldn't they just copy Pioneer's script verbatim with the newer FUNimation voice actors? But this DVD does feature a better and more accurate subbed version, so you should get this DVD if you're gonna be watching the original Japanese version more often.

    OVERALL:
Good movie. Get the Pioneer DVD if you like dubbed DBZ, and get the FUNimation DVD (available in a box with the other first two movies) if you prefer the Japanese versions.

    EDITION NOTES:
Pioneer's out-of-print DVD or FUNimation's version (also available in the aforementioned box set.) Those are your choices here. Once again:

Pioneer DVD if you want a good dubbed version.

FUNimation DVD if you want a more accurately-translated Japanese subtitled version.

5 out of 5 stars DRAGON BALL Z DEAD ZONE A REALLY GREAT MOVIE.......2006-03-30

DEAD ZONE IS A GOOD MOVIE THERE IS A LOT OF ACTION BUT GOKU'S VOICE IS DIFFERENT ALSO CHI-CHI AND PICCOLO IS EVIL BUT HE JOINS FORCES WITH GOKU TO FIGHT GARLIC JUNIOR,PICCOLO HELPS GOKU BECAUSE AT THE BIGGINING PICCOLO GETS ATTACKED BY GARLIC JUNIOR'S HENCHMEN GARLIC DOESN'T DIE HE JUST GETS THROWN INTO THE DEAD ZONE CAUSE OF GOHAN THIS MOVIE IS ONE OF THE BEST
    HEROES FOR THIS MOVIE:
    GOKU
    PICCOLO
    KRILLIN,BUT DOES NOT FIGHT
    GOHAN
THE BAD GUYS FOR THIS MOVIE:
    GARLIC JUNIOR
THE 3 HENCHMEN OF GARLIC JUNIOR

4 out of 5 stars The First and the Best.......2006-01-26

Of all the numerous DBZ American movie releases (discounting The History of Trunks and Bardock the Father of Goku) Dead Zone was the first and the best, and the only one to actually have some life in the series. In many ways, it's an introduction to the DBZ series, as it introduces Goku as he is currently, shows us what he's been up to, and brings in his son, Gohan. Along with that, Piccolo and Krillin join the action.

And in this one, the bad guy wins. Garlic Jr., who later has a saga between Freeza and Trunks, starts the movie by collecting the Dragon Balls and making his wish for immortality with the Eternal Dragon. But, while obtaining the balls, Garlic Jr. kidnaps Gohan, who wears the 4-star ball on a hat, and thus Goku gets involved. In an attempt to save his son, Goku, with Krillin's help, and eventually Piccolo's help as well, battles Garlic Jr.'s numerous, spice-related henchmen until the final, inevitable showdown with the immortal Garlic Jr., who has not only a powerful fighting form, but the Dead Zone sucking in the Earth into its Limbo as well. And then, Gohan stirs...

This movie carries itself with some great action, and in this one it has yet to become pointless. Enemies aren't suddenly introduced to make the movie longer. We know who Goku will face from the start. Along with that, it has some pretty funny moments, like Gohan's tripping scene--he accidentally eats a drug-laced fruit--which ends with Gohan peeing on Krillin's head.

Unfortunately, this movie started the never-ending trend of keeping the "movie" length less than an hour. Everything in this movie, and the ones to come, seem jammed in. Something you rarely see in the DBZ series is a fight that lasts less than five minutes. Most go into episode after episode. Maybe this was a good thing about the movie, but you kind of get used to something and to have it suddenly stop is kind of a jarring feeling.

Still, Dead Zone is the best of the movies, with some good action and laughs. And the good thing about this movie is that anyone could pick it up and enjoy it, whether you're a new fan or a long-standing one. And if you haven't yet seen this and you are a fan, then pick this up.

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Remake.......2005-08-04

I bought the movie last saturday and i watched when i got home. I thoguht it was better than the original movie because it's the way it was supposed to be made. I always say, "The original is the best, unless it's uncut." After I watched the movie, I watched the commentary. I'm a hard person to make laugh, but the commentary people got me to laugh. I would recommend getting this movie if you've seen the first one. I would also recommend this to any person who hasn't seen this movie before so they can see it the way it was meant to be seen. It is definitely worth the money buying this movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Dead Zone.......2005-07-03

I bought the Pioneer version of this a few months before this one came out. The movie was very good, but I didn't like the voices at all and the picture quality was simply awful. But, with this version of it, they use the FUNimation voices, with new music and a new script, which I like better than the Pioneer script. (Which was actually the Japanese script.)

Many people like the Pioneer version over this one becquse they used the Japenese music and dialouge. However, if you want that, just watch the Japenese version of it, on this DVD. (Pioneer always had poor subtitles on their DVD's, but FUnimation always gets the subtitles right.) Also, this is the digitally remastered version, and it looks very, very good.

I'm so glad they're finally releasing the Ultimate Uncut editions. Pioneer took and butchered a great series, cutting the climactic Goku Vegeta battle into utter crap, and ruined the great Namek saga. Finally, we'll see these episodes, (and movies-World's Strongest and Tree of Might are also being re-released) the way they were meant to be seen.

4 out of 5 stars Barely remember this movie at all..........2005-05-14

I remember seeing this movie on Toonami twice a long time ago. It was pretty good of what I remember. It was edited for TV. I'd only go out and hunt for this DVD if want every DVD cause you're a collector or something. FUNimation is coming out with a new DVD for this movie with the GOOD voice actors and the ORGINIAL japanese version. It comes out May 31, 2005. Get that one instead if you want to see it. I just wanted to say that.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good......Bad english dub though.......2005-03-13

This is a pretty good movie, with good action and story. However, the english dub brings down he quality. Goku's voice is AWFUL! I'm glad FUNimation changed the voices when they took it over, becuase almost all the voices are bad. Gohan's is really the only voice I liked. When the voices in this movie say lines, they sound really corny. i bet if FUNimation had done the voices for this, it wouldn't have sounded corny. I haven't watched the japenese version of this yet, but I already know the voices on it are better because I've seen other japenese DBZ, and it all has pretty good voices.

My other problem with this DVD is that the menu is too slow. The dragon on the menu says something everytime who choose something. Also, this movie was TOO DARN SHORT! It was only 40 minutes, and it says it was in theaters, which I find hard to believe.

3 out of 5 stars Have no clue..........2005-01-28

Can't find anywhere to buy since im too poor I barely can afford internet Its a rare vhs I really need it and want it, I look on the road for pennies and things to get, I cant find a place to buy it, I really need this and worlds strongest, I really need them so I'm waiting for amazon.com to get one since my mom doesn't have credit card... my birthday is in 3 days and im not going to get any presents, im too poor, like any of you care, all I know is the movie is between last eps of db and firsts of dbz and Gohan blows Garlic into some like dead zone..... well I wish I had this if they get it in stock I would appreciate it to buy.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of action, not much story..........2004-12-02

There's only so much story you can tell in a 45-minute movie and "Dragon Ball Z: The Movie- Dead Zone" proves this point. The plot is paper-thin and this movie is very heavy on action. To top it off, the animation really isn't all that great. I suppose there's some market for "DBZ," and perhaps I'm not one of them, but I feel like a story would've helped this mini-film a lot. What little story there is involves Goku going to rescue his son Gohan from a weird little guy named Garlic Jr., who has collected all the dragon balls together and wished for immortality. Violence ensues. There are much better anime movies out there. Do you really want to spend your money on this one?

5 out of 5 stars Original Title Return My Gohan.......2004-10-22

    2 out of 5 stars Boring Creatures.......2006-09-14

Several plain/plump looking women live together in an appartment. They talk a bit then go out, kill someone bring them home and butcher the body.

They're compelled to survive on human flesh. They don't even get it on with each other, or their prey.

And there's a sub-plot about some nut who captures creatures such as themselves and then tortures and kills them.

Very little else happens in this film. Unless the 'everydayness' of this horror is meant to make some point, it's rather boring.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent gory horror: Not your father's zombie flick.......2005-11-21

My wife summed it up like this: "It was unpredictable and realistic...it seemed like it could happen...it was so cerebral!"

She's right. This is a cool not-your-typical zombie flick. For one thing, our heroines aren't zombies. They have, apparently, contracted a disease that drives them to eat human flesh.

And eat human flesh, they do! This is one of the goriest movies I've seen in a long time... and done much more realistically than most zombie movies.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE NotLD and ALL ROMERO'S CHILDREN! This movie is just different... and worth your time.

The plot is basically this: Two different groups of women are hiding out, suffering with this disease that they contracted when they were bitten by other victims. The disease forces them to eat human flesh. Are they zombies? One of the actresses in the extras says that they are. I didn't think so. But they are, I suppose, THINKING zombies.

    The actresses are great, btw.

5 out of 5 stars this is in fact a terrific movie.......2003-10-27

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. The other reviewers would tell you that I'm crazy- And it's true that THIS IS NOT your typical forumulaic zombie movie - no. No sleek cool hero's or overly animated beasties. (Which in my book is a plus since the more realistic it is - the more scarier and more intellectually appealing.)

If you want something creative and fun that dares to take a zombie flick to a whole new arena then try this out. Women will especially love this film because it flips the typical misogyny of the horror genre on its ass.

2 out of 5 stars Four fat women who do nothing all day but smoke pot.......2003-05-30

... This isn't your typical zombie movie. This isn't a high budget movie. This isn't a gorefest.

I'll line up in this litany of isn'ts. This isn't a good movie. This is a horribly dull movie. I think the director would have us feel sympathy for the four fat women who do nothing all day but smoke pot. Well screw them, they aren't dead creatures, they are tedious boring wretches who should die but don't. They move from cockroach infested flat to cockroach infested flat. Oh the old kook of a man does nab one of them near the end, but he is as inanely pointless as the potheads. The only thing that remotely looks like a zombie is a wheelchair bound lump of flesh who says nothing but "geh" and drools, she's there in the first half of the movie and not there in the second half of the movie and it doesn't matter because nothing matters.

If I want realism I'll walk outside or go to the supermarket. A zombie movie and realism are two completely different concepts. Cross them and you get an abomination, like this movie.

The director actually did a nice job with I Zombie, which I'd recommend only for a few reasons. First, when the guy ethers his abandoned girlfriend for a midnight ride, that's some powerful stuff right there. Man I really felt for the kid, not because I've ever ethered a girl and took her for a ride, but because it's tough to see a man with a broken heart. Second, there's the scene where he rips his own dork off. I'm not making that up. And third, at the end of the movie he's a bloody heap of tissue lying on a bed. Other than those three things, I Zombie is also ennui on celluloid.

Dead Creatures gets 2 stars because any zombie movie should start at 2 stars. Maybe I'm just a misogynist. I felt nothing for the four fat women who did nothing all day but smoke pot, except for contempt, but that was only fleeting because how can you feel contempt for useless muppets?

    4 out of 5 stars Not Hollywood.......2002-08-08

Hmm, low budget, independently made British Zombie flick. Bleak and slow but strangely compelling, not unlike being sucked into a world of the undead. You come back to life watching the voice over extra on the DVD which is a blast, these guys are funny! It's good to know independents like Parkinson are out there doing this kind of stuff.
