4 out of 5 stars Decent, sleazy ArtSlasher... Best Commentary Ever..........2007-01-24

I am sure you are all aware of the history surrounding Mr. Ferrara's
first proper film the 'Driller Killer'. It has achieved most of it's
notoriety due to it's distinction of being one of the first so-called
'Video Nasties'- films banned by the UK due to lurid content. From what
I have gathered after watching the majority of these 'Video Nasties',
is that this was some sort of backlash and hysteria by the moral
police. If you go into this film expecting gore-filled mayhem and
over-the-top violence you will likely be very disappointed...

However if you go into this film with no expectations, you will likely
be amused and entertained. This film will be much more enjoyable if you
are over 30 and from the glorious, sleazy NY before it was sanitized.
The dirty punk rocker sleaze factor oozes nicely from this film and I
found it very satisfying...

Keep in mind, this was Abel's first film and it shows. Some of the
shots are rather extraneous, and certainly a few of them could of been
framed better. The pacing does a lag a bit in spots, and some of the
dialogue is rather inane (I actually find the inane dialogue to be
charming and amusing)...

The factor that elevates this DVD to 'must-purchase' territory (I am
referring to the Cult Epics version), is Abel Ferrara's amazing
commentary. He is obviously on lots of strong drugs and his stream of
conscious rambling really enhance the viewing experience. he is very
quick to point out flaws in his film with wild abandon. It is also
lovely to listen to him oogle the actresses and ramble off incoherently
in stream of consciousness Frankenstein quasi-sentences...

If you are a punk rock child from the 80's you will probably appreciate
this film much more than the casual viewer. I hesitate to call it a
horror film. It is more of an Art-house, drugged-out, sleazy portrait
of early 80's New York City set in a slasher film regarding man's
frustration and gradual descent into madness. Check it out, and please
re-watch with the commentary. I promise you will be amused (and
amazed)...

4 out of 5 stars Nasty and interesting shock-feast........2006-05-08

An artist named Reno ( Jimmy Laine a.k.a. Abel Ferrera) lives in New York City in a apartment paying bills and wants to become a very successful at his artwork. He's sometimes haunted by strange hallucinations as he may think he's loosing his mind and not even his girlfriend understands it as she's starting a rock band, he goes nuts with a power drill in the night only to murder people.

Very interesting and brutal low budget horror crime drama classic that is quite an unpleasant and unsettling movie that has became a cult fave and one of the most infamous "video nasties" of all time. There's scenes of graphic gore and some intensity to make the viewer feel a little disturbed, what i think what director Abel Ferrera ( Director of "King of New York" and "Bad Lieutenant") isn't some mindless slasher flick but really more of a sleazy and violent character study about descending into madness that isn't for the faint of heart.

This 2-Disc DVD set has good picture and sound quality on the film especially for the first time shown in it's original theatrical widescreen presentation with a good audio commentary by the director Ferrera, theatrical trailer, filmography of the director, Porto-pack commercial used in the movie, and the second disc contains three early short films from the director.

Also recommended: "High Tension", " Pieces", " Taxi Driver", "Henry: Potrait of a Serial Killer", " The Toxic Avenger", "Cannibal Ferox", "Maniac ( 1980)", "The New York Ripper", "City of the Living Dead ( a.k.a. Gates of Hell)", "House By The Cemetery", "Re-Animator", " Intruder", " Blood Diner", " Ichi The Killer", " Perfect Blue", " Angel Heart", "Scanners", " Caligula", " Leon: The Professional", " Sin City", "A Clockwork Orange", " Day of the Dead", " Se7en", " Hostel", " Terror Firmer", " Street Trash", " Blood Sucking Freaks", " Don't Look in the Basement", " Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky", " Battle Royale", " The Toolbox Murders ( 1978 and 2004)", "Cannibal Holocaust", " Men Behind The Sun", " Tromeo and Juliet", " Natural Born Killers", "Fight Club", "Combat Shock", " From Hell", " Basket Case", " Silence of the Lambs", " Hannibal", "Red Dragon", "House of 1000 Corpses", "Mother's Day", "Silent Night Deadly Night", " Nightmare on Elm Street", "Hellraiser", "Hellbound: Hellraiser II", " The Godfather", "House on The Edge of the Park", "Scarface", " Suspiria", "Opera", " Tenebre", "Inferno", " The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series & 2003 remake", " Blood Feast 1 & 2", " The Shining", "My Bloody Valentine", " Cemetery Man", "The Beyond", "Just Before Dawn", "Shogun Assassin", " Halloween", " The Exterminator", " The Devil's Rejects", " Color Me Blood Red", " The Gore-Gore Girls", " Two Thousand Maniacs ( 1964 and 2005)", " The Prowler", " Last House on The Left", " Dead & Buried", " Stage Fright", " Reservoir Dogs", "Kill Bill", " Friday The 13th series", "The Burning", "Freddy Vs. Jason", " American Psycho", "Wolf Creek", "The Prowler", " Wild at Heart", "From Dusk Till Dawn", and "Wrong Turn".

1 out of 5 stars all i can really say is "no".......2005-12-02

Ferrara is obviously a required taste and this film does nothing to prove against that point.

not only is he a horrible actor, but he's also one of the worst directors with an undeserved cult following. his camerawork is atrocious and wreaks of a bad home movie.

the back of the DVD says that Abel was trying to make a film in the vein of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but in the end wound up making a film more like that of Taxi Driver. now, even before i watched the film, i knew this was an incredibly gross overstatement, but now i think the DVD company that made such a horrid claim should be forced to remove that from the synopsis.

oh, and the band in the movie was terrible. hell, everything about this movie was terrible. Ferrara is a failure.

4 out of 5 stars Mental disintegration.......2005-10-30

This film has gained notoriety and infamy due to it being banned in Britain under the Video Nasties Act. For someone like me, that kinda serves as a catalyst into seeing why these films were banned in the first place ( as well as being a bit of a gore hound as well ). For me though, this is/was the ultimate video nasty in that before I had read so much about this film that I wanted to see it at all costs. In the end I got it cheaply on DVD which I'm pretty happy about.

This film tells the story of Reno ( Jimmy Laine AKA Abel Ferrara ), a struggling artist who slowly goes insane trying to finish his masterpiece while a crap punk band called The Roosters move in and disrupt his space. It's all very realistic as it shows the run-down surroundings that Reno lives under where he regularly sees violence of one sort of another. All this plays on his psyche and gradually he succumbs to violence.

Obviously you know what happens next after he purchases a battery operated powertool so I'll leave you to watch the rest of the carnage from there on. In a sense I'll let you be your own judge on this film because it's not for everyone and I certainly can't judge whether some people would want to watch it. Certainly though, it should be viewed for the amount of notoriety it has picked up if nothing else. The only problem for some is that it does have some arthouse pretensions which may or may not be a bad thing. It's up to you to decide which.

4 out of 5 stars Body Piercing..........2005-10-04

Reno is in bad shape. He's a starving artist who is very near to snapping completely. His latest painting is his only hope of paying the rent on the apartment he shares with two cute gals. He's been working on his "masterpiece" for quite a while and the art dealer who sells his work is getting impatient. Enter THE ROOSTERS, a local punk band that moves in directly under Reno and company. These guys are loud and practice almost around the bloody clock! Reno is deprived of sleep, causing his nightmares to become reality. He catches a commercial for the new PORTO-PAK electrical outlet belt. He soon buys one and becomes the title character. Reno begins drilling into homeless drunks for stress release. He uses them as targets for his rage which he cannot unleash on the ones who actually deserve it. So, these poor bums are his easy prey. That is until the art dealer trashes Reno's artwork and one of the girls he lives with moves out on him. That's when Reno goes totally bonkers! The ending is chilling and disturbing. DK is one of those crazy-killer movies that remains interesting throughout it's running time. Extra points for the punker scenes and galpal cuties! Watch it with PIECES for a powertool mayhem double feature!...
