5 out of 5 stars motorcycle mania 3 - Jesse James Rides Again.......2007-06-08

Its cool to see Jesse building again. If your tired of Hollywood Jesse (monster garage) than watch this. A little to much drama about wife number two. But when he's in the shop and on the road it's great. Loved to listen to Kid Rock perform "long haired country boy". I am realy into his skills and his bikes. This film does it for me.

3 out of 5 stars Enough with the drama.......2007-05-09

Great opening, some of the best camera work i have seen of any of the Motorcycle mania dvds. I feel way too much time is spent on Jesses dramas with wives, ex wives, and girlfriends, its interesting to know what hes upto in his personal life but the camera spends too much time covering this side of his life, lets bring on the bikes, cars, and metal work, areas where he excels.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-08-29

Excellent production, great content. Shot with HD cameras, looks great on a SD television. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed the candid approach. I frequent Old Mexico(Sonora)
where the journey ended. The mix of Old Mexico, Harleys and genuin people was sorrel. Jessy and Kid were also cool.

In "The Zany World of Basic Math," the Standard Deviants, an ebullient troupe of young performers whose specialty is taking serious subjects and making them offbeat enough to be memorable, tackle the most basic concepts of mathematics. Starting off with explanations of integers, the program proceeds to cover addition, subtraction, and multiplication before moving into more advanced concepts such as exponents and division. Throughout the program the cast cracks painfully corny jokes and occasionally dresses up in some bad costumes to make their points. Indeed, this must be the only math lesson to have a "comedy editor" listed in the opening credits. The underlying principle is that if the performers make spectacles of themselves, that serves as a mnemonic device and makes the serious material they're imparting easier to remember. After covering the basics, the program moves into decimals, fractions, ratios, and percents. Following each section a quiz appears, which the student can either take or skip, and a "Grand Slam Exam" concludes the entire set of lessons. While the presentation may be unorthodox, the academic material has been approved by a panel of professors. Though it's not intended as a substitute for classes in math, students would benefit by using this as review material. --Robert J. McNamara

3 out of 5 stars Too much entertainment, not enough education.......2006-07-04

While this tape may appeal to children in the 8 - 12 year old ranges and also teaches them some mathematics; older people will most likely find it dull. The problem is that a great deal of time is spent in the telling of jokes designed to appeal to children of that age range. In my opinion, much more time than is reasonable. After all the primary purpose of the tape is to teach math with the humor being a secondary supplement. However, the way the tape is put together, the humor is foremost and the math is secondary.
All of the following basic concepts are covered, but not to the depth necessary for understanding.

*) Integers and how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them.
*) The names of all the components of an arithmetic problem.
*) Fractions, their components and how to reduce them.
*) The order of operations.
*) Prime numbers and how to factor integers.
*) Exponents and scientific notation.
*) Ratios and percents.

While I think this tape would be good as a supplement, I don't think that it could be used as a primary learning tool. Too much focus on entertainment and not enough on learning.

2 out of 5 stars Not for younger children.......2005-03-26

I bought this DVD for my third-grade twins who are having difficulty memorizing math facts, and don't quite understand the relation between these math facts and the real world. I thought this DVD would be perfect, explaining basic math facts with humor and real life examples. But their explanations are way over the heads of this age group. In explaining the concept of "carrying over" while adding, for instance, here is what is said and written out on the screen: "Carrying over means you take the digit in the tensplace of the digit place sum, and carry over that digit to the next digit place to the left in your addition problem. You do this whenever the sum amount in the digit place is greater than nine."

Yeah, *I* get it, but it is not the simplest way to present it to an elementary grade child.

I'm not certain what grade level this series is for -- perhaps middle school and above? -- but definitely not for those just starting out.

5 out of 5 stars I love this stuff.......2000-02-19

What an excellent way to learn numbers. The songs are fun and the info is spot on. Learning with the Standard Deviants is the way to go.

Description

World-renowned Iranian writer-director Abbas Kiarostami (TASTE OF CHERRY, THROUGH THE OLIVE TREES) has created a deceptively simple work—shot on digital video within the confines of a single vehicle—that brings the intricate nature of Iran's sexual and social politics into sharp focus. Seen through the eyes of a beautiful, chador-clad divorcée, the film catches her impromptu conversations with various female passengers (and her imperious young son) as she navigates Tehran's congested and vibrant streets over the course of several days. As Kiarostami's "dashboard cam" eavesdrops on these extraordinary and moving stories of sex, divorce, love and religion, an entirely original and fascinating portrait of modern Iran emerges. Also features the "master class" making-of documentary 10 ON TEN.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing, especially from Kiarostami.......2006-05-15

I watched this film twice, and I didn't really like it. Cinematically, it was garbage. As a document of modern day Tehran, it's interesting, but ultimately, it's a very unimaginative, tedious film. Kiarostami simply takes 2 digital video cameras, straps them to both sides of a car, and has actors (professionals and non-professionals) drive around amd talk. It does offer a more multi-faceted portrait of Iranians than you usually get in the mainstream press, but the film is really boring to look at. It is not especially creative to strap 2 cameras to a car and make a "film". There's really no difference between Ten and any news piece you will see on the evening news, except this film is 90 minutes. The documentary, 10 on 10, is more interesting, simply because Abbas himself is the star, and he talks about how he makes films. He does say that he feels his film Ten is the future of cinema. I hope he's mistaken. Don't misunderstand me, this review is not a hatchet job on Kiarostami. He is a great filmmaker. Taste of Cherry, Close Up, and The Wind Will Carry Us are all masterpieces, and deserve the accolades they receive. Unless you are a Kiarostami completist, you can skip this one, otherwise, watch it once.

5 out of 5 stars Another Skilled Screenplay.......2006-03-01

Ten on Ten expresses humanity in its rawest form , an animal all too familiar for Mr. Abbas Kiarostami . In this case humanity was an improvisational story told through the daily life a single mother while driving . Picking up family members , friends , and strangers in her car while passing the time talking of life's short comings , the main character is sure to reach beyond the boundaries of the screen and touch the heart of ever individual watching . Each character , oozing with personality , riding in her car captures her imagination . As liberal as that imagination is , still she finds herself experimenting with the strengths and faults of each character .
At the end of the day , however , she never looses sight of her inherent existentialistic threads and metaphorically sighs relief each time a passenger leaves the vehicle . Beware , though , this film is sure to leave you hungry for more Abbas Kiarostami ...

But the question remains: was this film a premeditated thought or was it improvision at its best ?

5 out of 5 stars See it!.......2005-10-03

A view into a young woman's social life in modern Iran. Informative and stimulating.

5 out of 5 stars Ten on Ten.......2005-02-14

I strongly recommend this film and the "Ten on Ten" which comes in the package to film students and teachers. Kiarostami is a guy of accident and he knows the taste of life.

5 out of 5 stars Cinema at its best.......2004-12-25

In addition to providing an important window on Iran, that should challenge any stereotypes that may be held by Westerners about this country that figures so frequently in the news of late, this film is really a remarkable and powerful film, by one of today's most important filmmakers -- Abbas Kiarostami compares very favorably in my mind with the great Auteur directors of the 60's and 70's, such as Bergman, Fellini, Antonioni, Godard, Truffaut.

This film is an instance where the truism that less is more really fits. There are two camera angles in this film: medium shot of the driver and medium shot of the passenger. As Kiarostami explains in his very worthwhile set of lessons on filmmaking "Ten on Ten" (included on this disc), this camera angle is both extremely simple and very versatile. It is perfect for enabling a character to engage in dialogue that is not artificial -- because it is natural for a character to speak facing forward when he or she is in the car, and because effectively it sets the viewer in the other seat. It also allows the viewers to focus on the main characters of the film, and allows the director to create a scenario for these characters, while at the same time allowing for the unpredictable and unplanned to take place in the background, outside of the window.

While the characters in the film are not actors, they perform their roles extremely well. As Kiarostami explains (drawing upon, I think, an idea first put forward by Bazin) anybody is capable of playing perfectly a single role for film: the part of themselves. The director enters the picture by setting up conditions under which the characters are free to play this role, without it seeming artificial, at the same time as they fulfil a larger objective demanded by the film as a whole.

I really admire directors, like Kiarostami and Bresson and Tarkovsky, who set up for themselves rigorous principles and adhere to them in the interest of portraying something that transcends what they could put into the film by themselves. While sometimes the result can be more interesting than entertaining, I find that Kiarostami's films tend both to be enjoyable as well as stimulating. This is certainly the case with "Ten" (and I would also recommend "The Taste of Cherry" and "Close-up" and "ABC Africa" by the same director).

4 out of 5 stars Great Kung Fu compliation for the price.......2006-06-06

Goodtimes Video released several movie trailer compilations in the 1980s that are just now being rereleased on DVD. "Bruce Lee and Kung Fu Mania" is one of them. Like the other compliations, this one starts off resembling a documentary but quickly turns into what it is - a collection of dozens of movie trailers. This time around, the focus is on Bruce Lee and his imitators and followers from the early 1970s.

There's ample footage from both "Fist of Fury" and "Chinese Connection" since those films are in the public domain. "Return of the Dragon" is represented by a movie trailer and "Enter the Dragon" is represented by a very grainy publicity film. There's also the trailer to the "Green Hornet" compliation of TV episodes. From that point on, we see a dizzying array of trailers (mostly in their entirety)which range from rather tacky tasteless films that exploited Bruce's death (such as "Bruce Lee Fights Beyond the Grave")to some classy work totally unrelated to Bruce Lee (such as "Five Deadly Venoms"). After roughly an hour of trailers, the DVD ends quite suddenly and the credits roll.

Video quality is mostly acceptable. Most of the films here were cranked out quickly by the Shaw Brothers or Harvest in the 1970s and were shown in American drive-ins or late-night TV, and have accordingly heavy grain and a mono soundtrack. Better quality versions of the footage here does exist (just look at the special editions of "Enter the Dragon" for example) but this video isn't really intended for the serious collector. Rather, this is a fun video for fans with a relatively casual interest in 1970s martial arts movies. Purchase it with that in mind and you will not be disappointed.

      4 out of 5 stars NOSTALGIC FUN.......2006-05-28

If you are a fan of Bruce Lee and the kung fu films from the 1970's then you will enjoy "Bruce Lee & Kung Fu Mania". This DVD contains over an hours worth of the trailers/coming attractions that you've probably seen at one of those movie theatres that has featured these films.

It starts off with an intro that features quick clips from fight scenes of Bruce Lee's and other kung fu films put together in music video style set to the song "Kung Fu Fighting". Then after a shortened look back at Bruce Lee's career , life , and some of his movie trailers (including a commercial for "The Green Hornet" tv show) we go into the long row of 1970 kung fu trailers that make up just about the majority of this DVD. Features trailers of some of the Bruce Lee exploitation films like "Bruce Lee Fights Back From The Grave" and "Bruce Lee:His Last Days" (entertaining but oh so inaccurate that its shameful) to trailers of kung fu classics like "Five Deadly Venoms" , "Flying Guillotine" , "The Deadly Angels" , "10 Tigers of Kwangtung" , "5 Masters of Death" , "The Kid with The Golden Arm" , "Deep Thrust" ,"When Tae Kwon Do Strikes" and "The Executioners of Death".

Some of these trailers might make you laugh because of the cheesey 70's retro style and low-budget quality in which they were made while some trailers actually have very nice film artistry and fight choreography to them.

The whole production looks as if it was quickly pieced together but if you liked these films then you won't mind the level of quality on the DVD but its the reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Why you never see a good martial arts fight compilation DVD/VHS........2006-04-11

A decade ago a company named Saturn Video released a tape called "The Greatest Kung Fu Fights of All Time" [ or something close to that title. ] The problem was that none of the fights on that video were any good, or even from any movie that any Martial Arts buff had ever heard of. You see, Saturn Video had originally been a distributor of cheap low budget independent films on home video, back when the major Hollywood studios were still not releasing their movies on VHS. They would sell these forgettable films to video rental shops that needed new tapes to rent. There were many companies like this back in the early 80's, but then companies like Warner Brothers, CBS/FOX, Embassy, and MGM/UA began releasing well known hit movies and drove the independent home video companies out of business.

The shame is that many of these original companies who were unable to buy the rights to major Hollywood movies would often buy the rights to foreign films, many of those martial arts movies. Some companies went out of their way to get the rights to classic martial arts movies, while others simply bought the rights to the cheapest films they could get their hands on. When the major home video companies began driving the smaller companies out of business, some decided to exclusively put out Martial Arts movies, something that the major companies were just barely doing, and find a niche in the market they could survive in. The two that survived were Saturn Video and Master Arts, but the movies they offered ranged from slightly entertaining pot boilers to the incredibly bad. The closest thing to a classic martial arts movie that Saturn ever released was "Master With Cracked Fingers", an unfinished movie from 1970 that featured Jackie Chan, and had new footage using a double added years later when Jackie became a superstar.

Since Saturn only had the rights to the movies in their catalog, they could only edit fight sequences off of the movies they already released. The same was true for any video company releasing any "Best of..." fight tape. There were some that came close to offering a tape with all the classics. Hong Kong based Ocean Shores had the rights to several good independent Hong Kong movies and was able to put out a very decent compilation tape called "This is Kung Fu", while Golden Harvest studios put together a compilation of fight scenes from their own movies called "The Deadliest Art". But here lies the problem. There are several rival Hong Kong movie studios that will not allow each other to use footage from each others movies to put out their own compilation tape. An independent home video company could buy the rights to show fight scenes from all of these studios, but it would be very expensive.

This brings us to Good Times Home Video. They were another one of those early 80's home video companies, only their strategy of survival was to save money by taping in LP mode and begin releasing tapes in stores for $10. [ Major Hollywood releases would cost around $75-$95 ] Good Times never passed up a chance to release anything that they believed was in the Public Domain, and it occurred to them that no one bothered to renew the copyrights to the trailers of hundreds of martial arts movies, and those trailers always featured the best fight sequences. Here was a way to put out a compilation tape that featured fight scenes from nearly every major HK studio, and covered many classic martial arts movies [ and some not so classic ]. They even were able to add a short promotional movie from the "Enter the Dragon" press kit. For the first time there was a compilation tape that had movie clips from both Golden Harvest and Shaw Brothers studios.

Not too long after this tape was released it was pulled. From what I understand, Shaw Brothers studios lawyers got ahold of Good Times threatening a lawsuit. I have no idea if the DVD release is the same collection of movie trailers as the original VHS release 10 years ago, but if it is then it is well worth owning. A great time capsule into the 1970's when the Kung Fu craze hit the United States and these movies were being introduced to American audiences for the first time.

4 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD DVD.......2004-01-21

THIS DVD IS A COMPILATION OF FIGHT SCENES AND MOVIE TRAILERS THAT FEATURE THE REAL BRUCE LEE AND HIS IMITATORS. THIS COMPILATION WAS PUT TOGETHER VERY WELL. THIS DVD FEATURES TRAILERS FOR A LOT OF MOVIES THAT I'M REALLY ANXIOUS TO SEE, SUCH AS; ''BRUCE LEE; THE MAN, THE MYTH'', ''FIVE DEADLY VENOMS'', ''BRUCE LEE; HIS LAST DAYS'', AND MANY MORE. THIS DVD HAS TO BE SEEN! THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MARTIAL ARTS DVDS YOU CAN BUY.

      5 out of 5 stars GOOD BACKGROUND.......2003-09-05

Every action film studio has made money off of Bruce, mostly with little taste. Goodtimes Video compiled alot of behind the scenes footage, and includes the behind the scenes featurette from "Enter the Dragon". Of special interest are the multitude of trailers from long forgotten kung fu classics. Most of which I saw during their original release(s) in the 1970's. Great for your collection, but not a film devoted entirely to Bruce Lee. Highly recommended. Enjoy.

The Greek director Theo Angelopoulos, winner of the top prize at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival for Eternity and a Day, will never build an audience of casual filmgoers. But then he doesn't mean to. Demanding, difficult, portentous, Angelopoulos makes films in his own deliberate style: sometimes awe-inspiring, sometimes mystifying. When he's at his best, as in the beautiful and devastating Landscape in the Mist, the results can be spellbinding. Ulysses' Gaze is a typically fascinating, typically long (three hours) work. Harvey Keitel, moving through the film at an intense murmur, plays a Greek filmmaker known only as "A." After many years in America, he returns home for an odyssey in search of some early film footage shot in the Balkans, a quest that leads him through that war-torn area and finally into the bombed-out city of Sarajevo. Angelopoulos establishes such a dreamlike rhythm, and his images (like a giant stone head of Lenin, floating down a river) are so striking, that adventurous filmgoers should find this experience absorbing, if enigmatic. On the other hand, Roger Ebert described Ulysses' Gaze as "a numbing bore." But even he would probably admit that no one else on earth makes movies quite like Theo Angelopoulos. --Robert Horton

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars My first Theo Angelopoulos' film.......2007-04-08

I have to confess that my introduction to Mr. A's works was not completely successful. He is a very talented film maker -this one is given. His shots are breathtaking, the music score takes you out of this world and the subject of the movie is quite respectable. What would you expect from the movie which title is "Ulysses' Gaze"? You would expect Ulysses embarking in the exhausting journey in search of his roots, himself, his one true love forgotten but still living deeply inside his soul which he "has to gaze into if he tries to find it" (according Plato). In this movie the roots are represented by the first cinematic footage ever filmed in Greece and Ulysses - Greek director "A" who had left his home country 35 years ago and now he is back and he HAS to find the footage. Why? Frankly, I am not sure but to find it he is ready to travel by car, by train, by boat, and by foot through the Balkan countries torn by war. In his quest, he also visits and relives his past as a young boy in the country he was born, later left but never was able to forget. He meets a lot of women who fell in love with him from the first sight but he seems to be forever captivated by one true love because every woman he meets has the same face (they all are played by the same actress, Maia Morgenstern). I like the movies like this - meaningful, personal, beautiful, the movies that have a lot to say but never rush. This movie has some problems though and one problem is called Harvey Keitel. I love Harvey, I think he is a great actor - brave, intense, ironic, clever, tough but vulnerable. Sadly, for all 173 minutes of "Ulysses Gaze", he looked like he was just about to say, "I am Mr. Wolfe. I solve problems but what am I doing here? How did I let myself take the role that I am so uncomfortable with?" Another problem may be in the unbearable self-importance of what Theo Angelopoulos had to say to the world. Or how he said it. There was one scene in the movie that could've been moving, warm, and beautiful - the people dance in the room, celebrate New Year and the dance continues on as the years pass by. It could've been moving but Angelopoulos chose to make it strangely cold and remote. Why? I don't know. There was one scene in the movie at the 2.5 hours mark that almost made me forget all the negatives - the orchestra on the snow in Sarajevo playing melody so marvelous that it could've easily been written by Orpheus whose music used to hypnotize every living creature on Earth.

I don't regret seeing this movie and I will see more Angelopoulos' films in the future but I could've done something better with 173 minutes of my life.

2 out of 5 stars Emotional but with too many faults.......2006-07-01

Apparently for some reason, the review I wrote of this movie was not accepted. I see that reviews I wrote later are already appearing on this site.

I watched this movie because it appeared on a list of the greatest films of all time. It doesn't belong on that list. It is poorly written.

I'll give you an example of the kind of thing that bothered me about it. Throughout the movie, Harvey Keitel is looking for three very old reels of undeveloped film. That is his quest, his odyssey. And yet when he finally runs into the man who was last known to have the reels, we are left hanging for too long. We don't find out whether he has them or not. The subject doesn't come up. The man tells Harvey that he looks tired and should get some sleep. So he does.

Why would they do that to us? It angers me. It is so manipulative. We were supposed to actually care, along with Keitel, about the reels. Excuse me, but I really don't care about them. The only reason I care is because you want me to. And now you have the nerve to play with me like this? Is that supposed to be artsy? I'd call it stupidity.

Another problem with this film is Keitel's monologues. He's not doing Shakespeare here. His delivery is almost Shakespearean in his monologues, and he cares too much about his pronunciation and not enough about just getting across the meaning of the lines. I sympathize because the writing is ponderous. What is he supposed to do with it?

There is the odd choice to cast the same girl over and over as his love interest, having her play different characters. It is confusing. The last of them tells him that she feels she has known him all her life. I'm not criticizing this odd approach. I'm just mentioning it. I'm not saying it was a bad idea. It's just awfully odd and confusing at first. Of course you recognize him - you just made love to him 10 minutes ago.

The ending is very heavy and emotional. You better be ready for it. Some innocent people get killed for no reason, as the executioner blames God for messing everything up. That makes no sense to me. That is no reason to kill innocent people. It is just senseless. Personally, I think there is a difference between senselessness and art. But the movie does get a kudo for being anti-war and emotionally agitating.

5 out of 5 stars The story that never ends........2005-07-20

Up until 1995, all of Angelopoulos' films had for their subjects Greece, Greek history, and Greek myths. He continues somewhat with Ulysses' Gaze, but this time the filmmaker travels beyond the Greek borders into the neighboring Balkan countries. Except for the scenes taking place in Sarajevo, all the other scenes were filmed on location, in Albania, the Republic of Skopje, Bulgaria, Rumania, and Serbia. One must remember that at the time of the production (1994), the Balkan region was not exactly the safest place in the world. This enterprise represented some danger for Angelopoulos and his crew, and it would have been easier for the film to be shot in the safety of a studio, outside the areas of unrest. But Angelopoulos was not trained in the method of the Actor's Studio. More importantly, he believes that shooting in the actual locations of his stories enhances his sense of actually participating in the film itself, and therefore produces better outcomes. He therefore felt he had no choice but to chance it. For the Sarajevo episode, Angelopoulos was not able to get the necessary permission from the UN, so the Bosnian scenes were shot around Mostar, Vukovar, and in the Krijena region.

In Ulysses' Gaze, history is present, but contrary to his other film, The Travelling Players, where it was the theme, and the group of players rather than any individual character was the "star" of the film, in the present film, history is now relegated to the background, and since "A's" odyssey through the region is the main story, we see a more conventional character in the personage represented by Harvey Keitel (he is not named in the film, but he is known as "A" in the script), and also in the different characters who cross his path. However, the dialogues are often stylized, and this gives the actors, especially Keitel, a somewhat "mechanical" delivery, with the exception of Keitel's last monologue. This is in keeping with Angelopoulos' intent to occasionally distance his viewers from their emotional responses, forcing them to study and explore the identities of the characters. , The Romanian actress, Maia Morgenstern, plays the parts of the four women. These women can easily be identified with the women Homer's Ulysses came across during his voyage. They also represent all the women whom "A" had loved and lost in past. Gian Maria Volonté; who had been offered the role of Ivo Levy, died of a heart attack in Florina during the shooting of the film, and was replaced by Erland Josephson. Josephson is of course one of the main Bergman's actors, and his performance in his film is, as always, up to snuff. Angelopoulos actually dedicated Ulysses' Gaze to Gian Maria Volonté.

Giorgos Arvanitis, Angelopoulos's long time collaborator, is responsible for the stunning cinematography. Many of the scenes are long shots that are also long takes, lasting several minutes, Angelopoulos' undeniable signature. On several occasions, during some long takes, there is a shift in time, emphasizing history's continuity. The film's first scene, on the quay of Salonika, is particularly remarkable in its lyrical construction.

The music is by Greek composer Eleni Karaindrou. Her compositions for the cinema transcend the soundtrack's conventions. Her music does not merely accompany the story, it is an essential element of it. The score is a counterpoint to the cinematic action, and establishes an emotional climate, combining with the image to express what cannot be said in words.

Angelopoulos wrote the script with the collaboration of Tonino Guerra.

As the title of the film announces, Angelopoulos is taking us on a journey through the tumultuous Balkan region and on a time-travel through its 20th century history. It is, after all, where "the Great War" (that is, "great" in the sense of "awful") started, in Sarajevo, where the film ends eighty years later, among more massacres and mayhem. Angelopoulos considers himself a historian of 20th century Greece, who likes to bring lessons of the Hellenic myths into his discussions. I would like to emphasize that it is useless, and even detrimental to the enjoyment of Ulysses' Gaze, to try to see in this film the retelling of Homer's Odyssey in a contemporary context. Angelopoulos does not try to recount the Odyssey. Rather, the Odyssey is merely a reference point, and the missing films become the journey's Ithacan destination.

On one level, Ulysses' Gaze is a search for the roots of the cinema of the Balkans, and more generally, of the cinema itself. Ulysses' Gaze considers the importance of film in recording history, and its potential in influencing its future development. Angelopoulos also suggests early in the film, through the events taking place in Florina, that film, not the Hollywood-type schlock, but thought-provoking film such as his can influence people's lives.

The second theme is of course, the odyssey of "A" through the Balkans, and as Ulysses was, "A" must also be clever to overcome all the journey's obstacles in order to reach his goal, the lost film reels. But this journey is actually the individual nostalgic journey of a man in search of his past, his loves, and his losses. "A," a Greek-American, left his native country thirty years before. It is said that of all the immigrants who come to the United States, the ones who long the most for their native country are the Greeks. Many eventually return home, and "A" is just one more of them

Finally, the film is also a Balkans history lesson. The voyage goes on its long and weary itinerary over this hostile region, and as it proceeds, we learn about past but also about present events, which tore, and are still tearing, this area apart. Although Angelopoulos' political stand is well known, the film stays clear of any political moral regarding the Bosnian war. Angelopoulos cannot help but be pessimistic in that respect: "plus ça change et plus c'est la meme chose" is his only conclusion. In Homer's epic poem, Ulysses returns to Ithaca, kills all the suitors, and most likely, lives "happily ever after" with his Penelope. But in Ulysses' Gaze, Angelopoulos knows his history well: the real Balkans are not, nor have they ever been, a heaven of peace. So, the war goes on, and "A," although having attained his Ithaca, is still trapped in Sarajevo, with all of his friends dead. For "A," the odyssey continues, as he recites Homer's optimistic lines, which are aimed at the future, "When I return...." What has meaning to Angelopoulos is not so much the goal of the journey, but the journey itself: "The story that never ends."

Angelopoulos' films tend to be monumental and slow, with striking images and a dreamlike rhythm. His films require audience participation through the viewer's memories, thoughts, and feelings. In these respects, Ulysses' Gaze is undeniably an Angelopoulos film, and certainly one of his masterpieces. Notwithstanding most American reviewers, such as Roger Ebert who described Ulysses' Gaze as "a numbing bore," I highly recommend this film, although I understand that I probably will be cursed by many who, brainwashed by Hollywood directors, will have followed my advice and be rather disappointed by the experience. Ulysses' Gaze won the Grand Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival and the FIPRESCI Prize, 1995.

1 out of 5 stars In a word, No. No, no, no, no. NO!.......2005-03-29

I can really imagine the pitch put to the producers of this film.

"Yes, We've got this great idea for a film. This man is searching for a lost roll of film, said to be the first existant film footage from Greece. Anyway, while looking for this film, he travels across loads of time periods and encounters lots of different people who symbolise the situaltion in the war-torn Balkans on the 1990s and who also act as a wider allegory for the travels of Ulysses. Oh, and the man who we want to play the lead is Harvey Kietel. Who can't speak a word of Greek."

One of those rare films which just doesn't work on any level. Inept in terms of its acting (partly wrecked by Kietel not being able to speak Greek!); pretentious because the talent behind the lens isn't up to transalting the many degrees of meaning and irony behind the main character's travels; boring due to the central idiocy of the central quest.

In short, a disaster movie without Irwin Allen in sight. Gives art movies a bad name.
