4 out of 5 stars The Beginning.......2007-05-24

In the second place, Hugh Jackman is beautiful. In the first place he is a fine actor. And Deborra-Lee Furness does her usual masterful job of developing character. The film introduces us to prison life in Australia showing anguish, and working at the job of living. I'm hoping the rest of the series continues this, and is soon available for viewing. I'm told this is based on true events, and that the psychologist was disbarred because of the relationship. Also nice to see fine drama beyond what the U. S. offers.

5 out of 5 stars Before He Was Wolverine.......2007-04-17

Before he was Wolverine, Hugh Jackman appeared in a gritty prison drama on Australian TV called "Correlli". The Rat Tamer is the first episode of the series to released on DVD.
The Rat Tamer refers to Dr. Louisa Correlli, the new psychologist who has recently begun working at Blackstream Prison. Correlli is played by Deborra-Lee Furness, who must have made quite an impression on Hugh because they were married a year later and are still married to this day!
The story follows Dr. Correlli as she tries to help a troubled prison guard named Costa who's stressed almost to his limit, as well as a new inmate by the name of Kevin Jones (played by Hugh Jackman). Jones arrives at Blackstream beaten so badly that is has caused some brain trauma and affected his motor skills. It's clear that he was somehow assaulted during his transfer, but because of the extent of his injuries, it's not clear why or how they occured.
At the heart of the story is the personal conflict between Jones and Costa. When their paths cross, the guard becomes obsessed with the memory of a terrible tragedy that happened to his best mate and is fixated on the notion that Jones was somehow involved.
I believe "Correlli" is only the second screen appearance of Hugh Jackman's career, but his trademark charisma and intensity are already there...and I just love that Aussie accent! The Rat Tamer is intriguing and compelling enough to want to see the rest of the series...it leaves you wanting more and wondering...what happens next?

5 out of 5 stars Hugh Jackman's first professional appearance.......2006-09-23

I saw this as the pilot episode of a prison drama series from Australia TV called CORRELLI. It focused on life in prison, mainly viewed from the eyes of a prison psychologist named Louisa Correlli. The whole series was a gripping and realistic dramatization of various lives of prisoners and the people who administered their penal sentences. Hopefully, the rest of the episodes will also be released on DVD as the entire series is quite excellent.

This first episode marked Hugh Jackman's first professional appearance, direct from acting school. Even at that time, Hugh had already shown a range of dramatic talent that will mark some of his future work, such as his early award-winning role in Erskineville Kings and some of his 2006 film releases ( The Fountain and The Prestige). To fans of Hugh Jackman, this film is also interesting because the actress who played the role of Louisa Correlli very effectively is Deborra Lee Furness, now Mrs. Hugh Jackman.

The episode released on this DVD is a compelling drama of prison life and what it does to those affected by such personal tragedies.

Alot of disturbing scenes in this great horror flick, and thats what makes it so good and netorious. Nay sayers who don't like blood and guts flicks, ignore their views as they are biased toward the true brillance of this movie. This is a great horror/shocker film that all horror fans will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Eat Your Heart Out.......2007-03-28

Joe D'Amato's masterpiece Anthropophagus is both one of the finest and the least appreciated of the Italian Horror Golden Age. D'Amato had already established himself as the master of raw gore in Blue Holocaust (aka Beyond the Darkness aka Buried Alive), and the snuff movie footage in Emmanuelle in America (the inspiration for Videodrome). In his entry into the slasher genre, he enriches Anthropophagus with a steady build-up of layered atmosphere until he has recreated the old dark castle effect of the classic Universal monster movies of the 30s. Then he lets the blood flood. Released butchered in the states as Grim Reaper, this version is uncut and contains the films two highmarks: the scene where a fetus is pulled out of a pregnant woman and eaten, as well as the pull out your fingernails climax where cannibalism is taken to it's most extreme. Most haunting is the flashback explaining where the flesheater came from, it makes your stomach drop. This movie establishes D'Amato in the ranks of Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci as one of the masters of the spagetti nightmare.

1 out of 5 stars 1.75 STARS: It's hard to give this movie any credit........2007-01-03

After watching "Anthropophagus- The Grim Reaper", I came away with mixed feelings. On the one hand, "Anthropohagus" had its moments (albeit quite few) where it was somewhat chilling. The Anthropohagus, himself, was rather effectively creepy as a horror movie villain. Some scenes did fairly well building up to a moment of horror, but the problem is that these effective moments of horror are few and far between. Unfortunately, the majority of this movie is beset with horrible acting and a very cheaply made horror movie, and for some reason, it is just very difficult to get over this fact in "Anthropophagus" probably because these weaknesses are so glaring.

"Anthropophagus" may even have outdone itself with some of the gore scenes, so the gore-hound shouldn't be disappointed with this flick. However, with that being said, "Anthropophagus" simply is not all that scary except for the few moments that deliver a scare or two to the audience, and even those moments are fairly pedestrian when compared to the classic horror movies we have come to know and love. Ultimately, what you have in "Anthropophagus" is horrible acting, a poorly written screenplay, uneven and poorly developed plot and action, below average plot execution, just a couple of scary moments, some laughable scenes, a fairly decent amount of gore and an absolutely disgusting, deplorable and depraved scene of violence (fetus scene) that really crosses all boundaries of horror movies that I've ever seen and which really offers nothing as far as the merits of the movie are concerned and certainly offers nothing to cinematic horror. If that kind of thing appeals to you, this could be right up your alley, but it doesn't do much for me. I would rather find a really compelling storyline and a scary movie that delivers atmospheric tension, suspense and a scary story, and you simply do not get that in "Anthropophagus". To answer a few questions that could be asked about this movie...did "Anthropophagus" bother me? No. Did I think it was scary? Certainly not, laughable at some points in the movie but not scary, and nor did I find it disturbing. However, it can certainly be said that what else do you expect from a low-budget Italian-made horror flick? Touche!

In my search for a great horror movie lost in the annals of cinematic horror like a needle in a haystack, what did I find in "Anthropophagus" but another shock and gore horror movie with horrible acting and a barely watchable storyline. Indeed, it is very difficult to give this movie any credit. A word of advice, if you have to try to make yourself like a horror movie even after repeated viewings (like I did with this one), it probably just sucks. For all intents and purposes, that is the case with "Anthropophagus-The Grim Reaper". Nevertheless, sadly, I've seen much, much worse.

3 out of 5 stars Sick but alright Italian cannibal slasher movie........2006-11-08

When a group of tourists take a boat to an island they discover there is nobody there, however it doesn't stop them from spending the night at an abandoned mansion but there is a deadly cannibalistic madman on the loose.

Gross and interesting Italian cannibal flick that is a little slow sometimes but does warm up on the memorable gore such as the abortion sequence and eating the fetus scene with some nasty flesh-eating here. It plays like a mystery-horror thriller but fails a bit for scares or good pacing, Tisa Farrow (Mia's sister) whom some horror fans know her as the main woman from "Zombi 2" does a good performance. It's an all-right effort that kind of capitalizes on the successes of "Zombi 2" and "Cannibal Holocaust" as it's nowhere as good as those movie.

This 2-Disc special edition has good picture and sound quality with a few grains and the extras include trailers, trailers to other "Shriek Show" releases, a documentary on Joe D'Amato (Director), Alternate opening sequence, and photo gallery.

Also recommended: "Cannibal Ferox", "Jungle Holocaust", "Zombi 2", "City of the Living Dead (a.k.a. Description

Death comes for us all, but after surviving a car crash that should have taken her life, Rachel Wilson finds herself stalked by the Grim Reaper himself intending on taking a soul he feels he is owed. Barely conscious in the ER room, Rachel struggles to convince the nurses that Death is coming for her and that her life is hanging in the balance. Supposedly, for her own protection, Rachel is locked up in a secure mental health facility. But it's not long before she discovers that her incarceration in the old hospital was no coincidence, surrounded by six other "patients" who, themselves, have cheated death. Over the course of the night they will have to face their worst fears, their own mortality, and Death himself.

2 out of 5 stars I can sum this movie up in two words: horribly inept.......2007-06-28

I can remember when the Grim Reaper was a frightening spectre, a dark, shrouded entity forever hovering over your shoulder just itching to swing his nasty scythe and claim your soul as soon as your hourglass ran out. He always got his man (or woman) - always. Until now, that is. Maybe he's gotten too old for the job (especially given the explosive population growth of modern times), maybe his heart (if he actually ever had one) is no longer in it, or maybe he's joined a labor union because the Grim Reaper who stalks the landscape of this Lionsgate 2007 straight-to-DVD release is a total slacker. Not only does he fail to claim the souls of several individuals fated to die right on schedule, he actually needs the help of a wormy human to round these lucky survivors up in one place so that he can complete his unfinished business.

Rachel (Cherish Lee) has her number come up one night as she is walking home from work (she's a stripper - but not a very good one, seeing as how she never takes her clothes off). It's a simple case of death by taxi -- except, she doesn't die. Some weird dude comes out of nowhere and tells her to stay in the light. After some more weird stuff that doesn't make much sense, Rachel wakes up in some kind of asylum, knowing that the Grim Reaper is coming for her. As it turns out, the handful of other patients there are also Death-escapees fearing the wrath of the Grim Reaper. Eventually, Death shows up, starts killing the patients, and that's pretty much it - apart from Rachel's medical intern boyfriend trying to find her and eventually playing a key role in the film's extremely lame ending.

This isn't the worst horror/slasher film I've ever seen, but it's pretty darn bad. The Grim Reaper's too slow to catch a sleeping tortoise, and he couldn't scare a three year old girl on Halloween - at midnight - in the cemetery. The acting is bad all the way across the board, the script/dialogue stinks to high heaven, and no one seems to care that large portions of the movie are utter nonsense (especially the ending). Grim Reaper is just a horribly inept movie from start to finish.

    3 out of 5 stars DON'T FEAR THE REAPER.......2004-09-10

Writer Luke Sinclair has made a career on writing grisly serial killer novels. He also has a drinking problem and is currently experiencing a severe case of writer's block. He's been on the wagon for almost five years, but he's losing his control, and he's not taking his medicine...Luke goes off to a Maine hideaway to see if he can find the knack again. Lo and behold, he's no sooner there than dead bodies start piling up. The crime scene also has a page torn from his latest book, REAPER. The local sheriff and the assisting detective from Maine State Police start to wonder if Sinclair isn't making art imitate life.
The movie throws us several red herrings and several suspects, in addition to Sinclair. What is it with the gruff local sheriff that makes him seem so suspicious? And what about the telephone repairman? Why does he pick up a lovely hitchhiker and then run from the cops? What about the nerdy deputy who picks his nose? The writers serve up a spicy plot, and the killer's identity is pretty surprising, but the clues are there.
Chris Sarandon as Sinclair seems to be sleepwalking through his role; whether this is intentional or just that he was bored, one can't tell; Catherine Mary Stewart does well as Sonya, the detective, and Vlasta Vrana as the sheriff is effectively creepy.
The main problem with the movie is it isn't suspenseful enough; we don't really get to see the crimes being committed, and the leisurely pace distracts from giving us chills.
A clever thriller, but not with many thrills.

    3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2.......2003-02-25

This film was Actually pretty good!!! Nice production for a "direct to home video" release! I bought it because "Catherine Mary Stewart" was in it only...but it turned out to be a fairly decent thriller! A little predictable, but well acted.

A little predictable, but well acted.

three and a half stars out of five...

      4 out of 5 stars a gripping psychological thriller.......2000-07-18

this was a fairly gripping psychological thriller with decent plot twists and stylish direction.I could not figure out who was the killer at the end so I give it high marks for that alone.

      1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.......2006-10-17

A long-time horror fan, it's sad to see how low our current horror films can sink. BLOOD REAPER is a very bad and stupid little movie. Horror queen Brinke Stevens, not really a good actress, gets top billing for about ten minutes of screen time in the opening sequence, the rest of the cast is simply awful. The plot, what little there is, revolves around a legendary killer who escaped from a nuthouse and kills people (campers) whenever there's a full moon. Then explain why many of the murders occur in broad daylight, and there are two full moons in a row???
Shot with a hand held video camera, BLOOD REAPER is at the bottom of the horror barrel.

1 out of 5 stars What The Hell?.......2005-06-05

Yes, I seen the movie "Blood Reaper" and just for you all that havent seen it yet. The movie completely sucked. It's the most stupidest, low budgeted movie I've ever seen. I have no idea how the movie got put out on the market. The imaging on the movie is like watching a video camara shot around everywhere. The Dialogue is also horrible. VERY VERY stupid movie and time wasting to see or buy. I suggest to everyone NOT TO SEE THE MOVIE.

2 out of 5 stars Ultra low budget, highly derivative gorefest........2005-04-12

Looks like the director bought a cheap camcorder, got a few friends around to watch his collection of Friday 13th and Halloween DVDs and then just sent them out into the woods to improvise a movie.

Blood Reaper is extremely formulaic, with a semi-supernatural masked villain (who can apparently be in two places at once, or else can cover great distances at phenomenal speed) going on a killing spree. Dialogue is very stilted, the blood and guts are always less than convincing and there are plot-holes that Freddy Krueger could drive a school bus through.

Some jerky, hand-held camera work is, presumably, meant to emulate Blair Witch, but could just be because the camcorder used to film this didn't have a stabilising picture facility!

No real shocks, and the pursuit sequences had more than a whiff of Benny Hill about them (run away from the maniac, take a breather, turn around and he's right behind you, so scream, jump up in the air and run away again).

Had the director decided to play it for laughs a la Evil Dead 2, it would probably have worked more successfully.

Blood Reaper is /just/ rescued from being a lone star movie by a decent rocking soundtrack, one genuinely creepy scene with a strange old woman camper trying to feed a doll, and the fact that the final woman victim can actually act a bit and looks like an ex-girlfriend of mine!
