Things started going downhill for Eddie Murphy around the time of this 1986 clunker, in which the comic actor plays a social worker predicted to be the savior of a kidnapped child, who has special powers to heal the Earth. Dennis Feldman's script and director Michael Ritchie (The Candidate), a once-thoughtful satirist, stumble over every link in a chain of fantasy-fueled sequences. Murphy phones it in, and Charles Dance (Pascali's Island) looks foolish in retrospect. --Tom Keogh

What a terrible, low budget, movie. We could not finish it.
Another classic Eddie Murphy title, just not my bag.......2007-05-09
The movie was entertaining, but not worth watching more than once, Its one of the few Eddie Murphy titles I wouldnt try to force on my friends to watch.
The golden child.......2007-04-11
This is one of my husband's favorite movies so i picked this up for him.I don't care for this movie and thought it was boring but the kids loved it so four out of five people in my family loved it thats why i gave it five stars.
Golden no, decent yes.......2007-03-29
This is certainly not one of Eddie Murphy's hits, but I think it deserves a look. This has enough of an interesting story, comedy, and decent acting to make it at least a decent rental. Fans of movies like "Big Trouble in Little China" and "The Phantom" are most likely to enjoy it the most. It is a bit of an oddball cross between an oriental story of mysticism and a US big city detective story with a little Murphy goofyness thrown in to boot. I will say the music sucks. That is one thing that probably hurt this movie the most. It is sounds like they tried to match rock music, poorly, to a mysticism movie. To bad John Carpenter didn't direct this and do the music, it would have been much better.
The Golden Child.......2007-03-03
The Golden Child~ J.L. Reate is a pretty good movie but it is nowhere close to his best movies of the early 80's like Coming to America, Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop. Eddie Murphy is doing a great job in the role but his jokes are a bit lame since one has heard them in other movies before. The music is what makes this movie less then stellar. The music is terrible to say the least. It seems to me like they went way cheap on selecting the person to write the soundtrack and many other tracks sounds like cheap 80's music produced in someone's basement. The script is alright but it just that extra fun and excitement that other Eddie Murphy movies. Still and all this is not a bad movie and I give it the 3 stars that it deserves.

A little disapointing..........2007-01-06
Although I loved this movie, the picture quality is one of the worst I've seen on Blu-ray to date. The picture was very soft, and grainy in parts. Despite these facts, it is still visually superior than its standard dvd counterparts but no match for most of the Blu-ray disc I've seen. The sound faired much better, there was lots of separation and bass.

Just like being there.......2007-03-16
Watching this film provided a real sense of the participant's journey. The breath taking landscapes and natural beauty, the ornate and decorative monasteries, and the sense of wonder expressed by the pilgrims all provide a personal insight into the spirit of Tibet.
A "Must See!".......2007-03-15
If you are planning a pilgrimage to Tibet, or if you have a special interest in Tibet, this film is a "must see." It is the story of one thoughtful man's journey to central Tibet, the high point being Lhamo Lhasa, the Lake of Visions. Educational and touching, the film made me cry and smile, and kept me glued to the screen. I'm very glad I bought it!
A fond reminder.......2007-03-15
This film is an evocative reminder of our 2004 trip to Tibet with Glenn Mullin and touches on many of the highlights. The film has a comfortable, low-key feel to it which is very enjoyable.
SANCTUARY.......2007-03-04
as a practicing buddhist who has never been to tibet, i found this dvd to be a most compelling journey into the innermost sanctums of the tibetan buddhist tradition......michael wiese and crew have managed to capture the vast richness and sublime essence of these magical places........the film making is topnotch, with a narratve and pacing that pull you further and further into places that have seldom been heretofore documented, and cinematography that will leave some indelible images in your mind and heart.......
inpiring, beautiful film.......2007-02-27
Whatever your specific chosen path, anyone with spiritual outlook should relate to the thrill of the experience that this film illustrates. Further, anyone who desires to see the breadth and depth and beauty of the world and all G-d's creatures will surely enjoy traveling along on such an adventure.
The photography is beautiful, the music is lovely, and the narrator charming!

Tokyo is the city where the final battle between the Dragon of Earth and the Dragon of Heaven will take place in the Japanese anime film X, directed by Rintaro (a.k.a. Tarô Rin; Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion) and written by the all-woman writing team Clamp. The Dragon of Earth wants to wipe out humankind because of the damage people have inflicted on the Earth, while the Dragon of Heaven is fighting to protect civilization. At the center of all this is Kamui, the chosen one, who must pick a dragon to fight for.
Full of dreams and flashbacks that pop up out of nowhere, the structure of X could be considered confusing and needlessly complex--if the story weren't so simple. Obviously, we're supposed to root for the Dragon of Heaven to win and save mankind, but the funny thing is, the Dragon of Earth has the better argument. If it were a debate, humanity would lose. But it's not a debate, it's an action film, and many of Tokyo's most famous buildings get destroyed in the battles. As with most anime, the women are either girlishly cute or slutty, but luckily in X, there are no graphic rapes; the love interest is merely crucified three or four times. It may not be the greatest anime film out there, but at least it's never boring. --Andy Spletzer
Customer Reviews:
An Epic Let Down.......2006-11-03
I used to own the Unflipped Manga, and recently replaced my copies. Rereading it inspired me to buy the movie. I knew it would not compare with the beautiful art by the CLAMP artists but the movie was horrible. The sense of plot you can get by reading the Manga was destroyed harshly, though the frame work of the idea is still there vital details are missing and so it misleads you about the entire goal. There is utterly no character development and its a dispassionant episode that is hastily thrown together. The art is still beautiful, but that is all. The imbalance causes collossal dissatisfaction.
X-Before the Series.......2006-07-23
I saw this after seeing hte X Series, and from the look of the naimation, how some things differ from this to the series, I believe this is what X the series was based on. The ending is different, and some of the characters have changed slightly, even parts of ths story have changed a bit.
The overall feeling of this movie, however, left me feeling disappointed. It ended so suddenly and seemed too quick for the seriousness of what this is based around. This was released a year before the first X series DVD was released, which leads me to believe X the series ws a result of this to deepen the story where this one lacked it.
I was disappointed with how this seemed to be rushing through everything to get to the final ending which was lacking. Exciting none the less, it is sitll X, which I greatly enjoy, however never plan to see this again, once was more than enough to compare the series to this.
Confused.......2006-03-24
Let me be honest, I have watched this movie several times, and I think I finally get it, but it makes almost no sense. Good movie though, and seeing it made me watch many times, I guess I should rank it higher, but I was so lost after the first viewing I really can't.
this is the series but told in 100minutes.......2005-12-23
like i said, this is the series but told in 100 minutes that you really don't have much time to actually know what's going on. I've seen it in english and i thought it was alright. I watched it in Japanese to see if maybe it'd be a little different but NO, its the same confusion of which destiny will the main characater,Kamui, choose. The animation itself is pretty good i think and the ending song is great. But really the ending pretty much sucked, and as for the end of the world? Yah its pretty much a lousy end as not much fighting took place with Kamui and his twin star,Fuma. The series is better i believe but even the ending to the series lagged alot.
My favorite anime movie.......2005-12-13
Now this is some great anime here. I love this movie. Now many would say this movie sucks but I loved this movie, my #1 anime movie. Believe it or not there is actually a story, I myself didn't notice the storyline in the when I saw it on DVD but one day I watched it again and saw that the first 5-10mins the story is explained fast. I also have to say for those that want only good action scenes to skip this one cause I think the story is what makes this one unique. Also this one for you might have a lame ending but I really don't mind it even though (the hero) doesn't do many fighting but man this movie rocks.
Verdict: 4.8 out of 5.0 Great movie but action scenes could have been better

Greek tragedy or Italian saga?.......2007-03-12
Pasolini's Oedipus Rex is not a movie to be taken lightly. It is definitely intended more as a discussion centerpiece than an actual beacon of entertainment. The story is told in a symbolistic manner, however, leaves a little too much lee-way in the sense of captivating general audiences. It's a hard movie to get engaged with, however majestically intended it may be.
Film As Art - 10 stars.......2006-11-30
This film is possibly the most brilliant - color - film AS ART that I I have ever seen. It combines beautiful and fascinating poetic color visuals, unusual landscapes and locations with the classic story of Oedipus.
The story is told with very little dialog, (subtitles for the dialog where present) and this enhances the internal, primal feeling of the piece. Pasolini was often compared to Fellini, but I feel he is much better, because he uses his visuals always to advance and to the purpose of the story. To me Fellini's visuals were often purposeless antic oddity. Here, any ambiguity is not in the story, but in character motivation, which lends modern reality and immediacy to the whole.
The acting style combines the classic Greek use of stylized mannerisms and mask work seamlessly with smaller modern film acting. The setting transitions from 1960s Italy to a primitive/tribal landscape which lends itself beautifully to the timeless/ancient feeling of the Greek story. An example of detail: tribal body painting is used to represent both a ritual queen in shades of Elizabeth R, to the whiteness of a plague death; the costume designs are a combination of rustic and Egyptian/Papal religious.
Cast mainly with little known actors, the big name actor in this film was international star Alida Valli, who has only two or three brief scenes. Her talent is fairly wasted here, but her presence is riveting as the aging, childless queen. (Valli: A brilliant Italian actress who had a brief career here in the 40s-50s, then returned to Italy/Europe, and balanced her commercial work in slashers with more oddball artistically challenging work. Her work often embodies "excess within control," the dichotomy of superficial clam with seething internal emotion. PARADINE CASE, THE THIRD MAN, THE MIRACLE OF THE BELLS, CASSANDRA CROSSING, EYES WITHOUT A FACE, SENSO, WALK SOFTLY STRANGER.) This film is the kind of work I would hope to be a part of as an actress and artist. This film could easily be in theatres today and be even more appreciated now than it was at the time of its making.
Theatrically literate, visually stunning, gutsy, and intelligent. Enjoy!
Yet another mediocre transfer from Waterbearer.......2003-05-22
Of the three Pasolini DVD's recently released by Waterbearer, Oedipus Rex is probably the best not only in its transfer, but in the film itself.
That being said, the transfer is still far from great. The matting is off, although nowhere near as badly as it is on Porcile. The colors are faded and the film is pitted and scratched, but again, nowhere as badly as on the Porcile disc. My main complaint is (as it was with Love Meetings) that the burned-in (not optional) subtitles are white, and are impossible to read in many parts of the washed-out transfer.
That being said, this is one of Pasolini's strongest films, and is definitely worth watching, whether you're a cinephile, a Pasolini fan, or a classical scholar. Casual viewers may be put off by Pasolini's style which, admittedly, is an acquired taste, but more open-minded viewers will be greatly rewarded. Again, it's doubtful that these films will see better editions any time soon, so if you're interested, there's no reason to wait around.

Opulent, riveting, strangely autobiographical OEDIPUS REX.......2003-05-15
Oedipus Rex (1967) is Pasolini's opulent and riveting adaptation of the ancient myth of Oedipus, a man who unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother; simultaneously, it is a provocative reflection of the filmmaker himself. Although Sophocles' 2,500-year-old play forms the basis for the film's second half, Pasolini's prologue is startlingly autobiographical. He opens in early 20th century Fascist Italy, while using the myth's characters to recreate his parents' relationship and his own birth. He then takes us to a mythic ancient world, filmed primarily in Morocco, with vast desert landscapes and stunning native architecture (Thebes is a massive city made of adobe, which feels genuinely ancient and real). Pasolini brings a grandeur and epic sweep to his Oedipus Rex, despite its limited budget, even as he gives full weight to the intimate moments.
The film draws great power comes from the completely naturalistic performances, ranging from the leads to the minor characters (Pasolini plays a High Priest). Silvana Mangano (Mrs. Dino De Laurentiis) is outstanding as Jocasta, Oedipus's enigmatic mother/wife. Her stone-like face suggests intense erotic heat with the microscopic wrinkling of a lip. My major reservation with the film is Franco Citti as Oedipus. He appeared in seven films for Pasolini (including the title role in Accatone), and was usually exceptional, but here he brings a too-consistent harsh tone to his role. Of course, Citti's monolithic resolve, as both Oedipus the boy (who cheats to win a discus match) and king, may be Pasolini's point. Namely, since Oedipus refuses to grow, to come to an integrated understanding of who he is and what his society needs him to be, he destroys himself by willful blindness.
Visually, Oedipus Rex draws enormous force from its vivid palette and use of the harsh Moroccan sunlight, not to mention its breathtaking, sometimes outrageous sense of style. Yet the literal clarity of the film does not obscure its dreamlike qualities. Pasolini wanted to film the myth as something which takes place in an authentic setting, yet which unfolds in a period outside of historical time. Even the eclectically multicultural soundtrack, with folk music from traditions as startlingly diverse as Japan and Rumania (and this was twenty years before the popularity of "world music"), helps achieve Pasolini's ambitious goal.
Intriguingly, the real protagonist of the film is Pasolini himself, who subtextually takes on Freud's (in)famous Oedipus Complex. As he said, "I wanted to make ... a kind of completely metaphoric - and therefore mythicized - autobiography; and ... to confront both the problems of psycho-analysis and the problem of the myth." (In the half hour documentary on Pasolini included on the DVD, one illuminating section is devoted to his views on Oedipus Rex.)
Revisionist Freudianism aside, this film succeeds in bringing both Oedipus and his world astonishingly to life. This Oedipus Rex is engrossing because it works simultaneously on so many different levels. For people new to Pasolini, this representative film is an excellent place to begin. In terms of its impact on film history, you can see its influence on pictures as diverse as Fellini Satyricon (1969), Norman Jewison's Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), and Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). It shows Pasolini grappling with some of the knottiest themes of his films, and of most people's lives, namely the relationship of men and women, of child and parents, and of one man to himself. And it is at once a work of outrageous design and deep feeling, a semi-camp epic with genuine mythic resonance.
The DVD is of very good quality, especially considering the film's age. However, the Pasolini Foundation in Rome, which controls the rights, insisted that the U.S. distributor release the DVD without any chapters (i.e., it's in one continuous track), to encourage people to watch the film in its entirety. Still, it's important to have this crucial part of Pasolini's filmography on DVD.

Description
One of the holiest sites of ancient Greece, Delphi was the pre-eminent shrine of Apollo. Cradled by Mount Parnassos and a valley of olive groves, it was also sacred to Dionysus, who was supposedly buried there. But Delphi is chiefly known for its legendary oracle the most famous of the ancient world. Journey back to the golden age of Greece, when the mysterious oracle of Delphi predicted the futures of kings and countries. In the smoky, haunting, and hallucinogenic atmosphere of the sacred shrine, predictions were uttered by a priestess in a delirious trance and interpreted by a priest speaking in verse. Dramatic re-creations bring the oracle to life, and leading historians explain how Delphi grew wealthy through the offerings of those seeking a glimpse at destiny. Explore the ruins of this mystical site with archaeologists, and see the latest discoveries that are shedding new light on the legendary city.
