Unspeakable is a suitably spooky variation on The Silence of the Lambs crossed with The X-Files, and features a wonderfully delirious Dennis Hopper performance to boot. The legendary actor plays a gentleman sadist of a warden, with little tolerance for an experimental memory-graphing program in use at his prison by Diana, a resilient scientist (Dina Meyer). The capture of an escaped serial killer, Jesse (Pavan Grover), brings researcher and brilliant madman together in a Clarice-Hannibal fashion; the difference is that Grover's character is an evolved human with powerful telepathic abilities. Between invading Diana's thoughts and projecting fantasies into her memory machine, Jesse provokes guards and the warden himself into self-destructive insanity. Lance Henriksen and Jeff Fahey add extra substance to the cast, and the entire, grisly production has a sure-handed look and feel under the direction of Thomas J. Wright, a veteran of The X-Files, Angel, CSI, and much else. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars scary bad.......2007-06-30

What do you get when you take the storyline of the silence of the lambs, add one-dimensional characters, bad dialog, bad acting and a tacked on political message? Unspeakable.

1 out of 5 stars If you feel like wasting 2 hours of your life...........2006-07-10

then borrow this movie. DON'T BUY IT. DON'T RENT IT. If you value every precious minute of everyday, then don't you dare waste any of them talking about or thinking about this terrible excuse for a motion picture. The only reason I call it a motion picture is because the people on the screen were moving. OH MY GOD!!! I'm just really glad I only spent $1.00 renting this (from the machine at the grocery store). If someone wants to make me feel better, feel free to send me my dollar back. I'm truly sorry to all involved in the making of this film becuase it must have taken a couple hours of your life to make, and what a waste of time and money it was. Did I mention that this movie is bad??

1 out of 5 stars A great idea, but..........2006-04-20

Because I've heard excellent things about the actor/director of 'Unspeakable,' I hate to give it a low rating. But I was sorely disappointed at the lack of plot development. The idea behind the film, that of unravelling the mystery behind a twisted serial killer's mind, is compelling. However, none of the film's elements receive enough attention. The acting is good, but the script contains predictable and uninteresting dialogue. I expect a psychological thriller to engage my mind. This film fails to delve deeply enough into its plot to do that.

4 out of 5 stars High Budget version of THE EVIL.......2005-09-07

This film has nothing to do with SILENCE OF THE LAMBS or even the X FILES. If you have seen the film THE EVIL, a very low budget film from NEW ZEALAND, then you have an idea of what UNSPEAKABLE is doing script wise. It is not exactly an upscale version of THE EVIL, but it does come from that line of thought. Add a seam of the supernatural, and some intense psycho-drama, as well as some very major gore, then you can get the feel for this film. It is clear that Lance Henrikson's talents further this on the Researcher's side, and Fahey's character is a real politician's animal in the way this film works. It stands very steadily in the Horror film camp, but seems to attempt to say some things about the human condition.

The essence of this film, from the "meaningful film" point of view, is that this film looks at the nature of true innocence, what is evil, and what constitutes true evil; and perhaps even to go so far as the genesis of pure evil... is it inherant, or is it conditioned ?

The comments it has like "The Religious right are neither", and " I think I just got splashed by the milk of human kindness" really add some social comment on some very current conditions that the Neo-Cons purport to stand for.
Hopper adds a great deal of verve in this film, and when he plays off of Lance's character, the emotions run high.
Whilst I could care less about preachy Horror, it does work as a decent sort of horror film, since the serial murderer character has a quasi-apocolyptic tone, which really races on the supernatural and surreal elements in good horror films.
Whilst the low budget pedigree of the film is very evident, it has enough of a budget to allow the actors to play high toned tension and horror in the best possible manner. The gore and horror, in the slash gore sense, leaves little that is unnecessary... the trepanning in the autopsy scene is done for a very good reason, and whilst it is graphic, it is not unwarranted in the context of the film and its events.

The DVD extras are mainly, and perhaps unusually, just visual out-takes, and deleted scenes. The scenes show that the script clearly intended to go in a much more supernatural direction, and in my view the final edit, when taking into account exactly what was taken out, shows a great deal of studio interference( I suspect). Overall, the film may have benefited by a writers commentary, since there is clearly something in the story line that had a few things to say, at least in a horror film sense, and maybe even in a wider, deeper, social sense.

Given a bigger budget, this could become a good, and very watchable franchise.

2 out of 5 stars Unspeakable is Unbelievably boring........2005-08-16

It sounded like it would be cool, a shrink with a brain machine that could tell if criminals awaiting execution were actually guilty or not by reading their brains. Unfortunately the script is not well written, characters and their purpose are unclear, the acting is choppy and direction is none existent. It's kind of like the X-Files, you get drawn into the story, but lose interest when you realize that nothing will be answered for the simple reason that the writers and directors would rather be cute instead of telling a story.

1 out of 5 stars Thought it would be better............2005-05-01

I have read about this movie in lots of reviews, with people saying how sick and twisted it is. Well, they were WRONG. What this movie is , is a sad attempt to be a sick , twisted psycological thriller. Many of the scenes dont make any sense. He jumps from one topic to another leaving you saying what does this part or the dialogue have anything to do with the movie. The killings are absolutley horrible and totally unrealistic. It also has me wonder how he finds a couple of the people that he killed. The acting was absolutley horrible and not even " B-Movie " acting just way worse. So please dont buy this movie or rent it, if you know some one who has it borrow it and thats it. I know I will never watch it again, it was that bad. Also

Im not one to complain about " b-movies". I have 2 flicks buy Hershell Gordon Lewis " Gore Gore Girls" and " Two Thousand Maniacs", also have 4 movies by Troma Video " Toxic Avenger ", " Tromeo and JUliet", " Blood Sucking Freaks " and the one disc edition with " Garden of the dead, Unspeakable and Buttcrack " all on one DVD . So yes , I am a big fan of 70's and 80's horror and love a good B -flick but this one is being unspeakable is just down right garbage. Maybe with more money better actors and better director this movie could have been good. cause the idea behind it is excellent.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Howard McCain movie (i.e. not with Athena Massey).......2004-11-19

For some reason Amazon has mixed this up with the 1996 film "Unspeakable" aka "Criminal Pursuit" aka "Shadow of a Scream" (latter is the title of the VHS version that Amazon apparently DOES carry). This one's a totally different Troma slasher film.

4 out of 5 stars so sick.......2004-11-05

but so good. I borrowed it from a friend...I don't think I would pay for it, because I don't see myself ever watching it again because it was pretty twisted.

But, yeah, it was good, especially for a Troma release.

2 out of 5 stars pretty lame.......2004-05-10

Chad Ferrin wanted to shock his audience. He did not succeed. He did make a very sleazy picture, but it does not shock. Why not? Because he makes the mistake of trying to dIsguise his shlock-fest as some sort of psychological thriller and he is simply not up to the task. This film takes itself very seriously. However, the script is bad, the acting is worse, and the idea is only partially realized. I have no idea what in the world our anti-hero is thinking. The result is hokey melodrama of the worst sort.

The story is very simple. A man loses his daughter (whom he was molesting) in a car accident that also makes a vegetable of his wife. He is driven insane with loss and guilt and decides to kill people. Some of them deserve it, like the sicko nurse who takes care of his invalid wife, and some do not, like the bright-eyed prostitute who gets her face smashed into a table until there isn't much left of it. The guy playing the lead should never be allowed to act in any venue ever again. He is horrible.

This movie is just about filth and violence - which is fine, as long as it is honest about it. I like dark films. I like low budget films. But this film just don't cut it.

There are effective scenes; mostly the violent ones. But these scenes are only effective in the moment. Contextually, they are simply random acts of violence.

If you really like sleaze, go ahead and purchase it because you won't find it at many video rental stores and it's pretty cheap here. Just understand that you are buying PRETENTIOUS sleaze.

The best part of this flick are the flashbacks of the daughter who is supposed to be around twelve, but looks about thirty-five. Priceless!

1 out of 5 stars Just plain pure crap..........2004-05-02

I am upset, cause I posted a comment on this film LONG AGO and it was NEVER POSTED. Was it perhaps because I wrote a bad review? Was it perhaps that it may have detracted people from purchasing this film? Well, guess what? I'm here to say ONCE AGAIN that UNSPEAKABLE is possibly the worst film EVER MADE. And if it's any consolation, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME. I did, and I want my time and money back! Though, one positive note, the extras are decent, and I must say, the director's short film was decent also. But to hell with it, the rest of it belongs in a toilet that hasn't been flushed in months. PERIOD.

2 out of 5 stars Three excellent four-star silent classics,but a dismal two-star DVD !.......2006-03-06

In my previous review of Vintage Entertainment's TRIO OF TERROR triple feature DVD release,Vintage used some of the worst conditioned prints and now they definitely did it again with the UNSPEAKABLE HORROR triple feature collection, but this time not as bad as the above mentioned disc.Featuring three of the most famous, excellent, four to three-star silent horror classics from Hollywood and Germany's Golden Age.

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1923) ***1/2 Transfer ***
The original 1923 classic starring Lon Chaney as Quasimodo and the transfer used for this release apparently is taken from the same 16mm Blackhawk Films preservation print that's often been used for other DVD releases right down to the optical mono soundtrack and effects from the source print. The sound is not very good as you could almost barely hear the score throughout the film so be wary of this particular version on various DVD releases and the print sometimes has its own flaws such as scratches, dirt, and excessive grain. It also has a dismal one page biography on Lon Chaney Sr. which barely unreadable.

THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1919) **** Transfer: *1/2
One of the all-time great silent classics of expressionistic German cinema, this transfer unfortunately is not something to write home about.Easily the worst-looking and presented presentation on the disc, the film opens with a plain,cheaply-made chyron white on black title card of the original german main title "DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI" and eventually goes straight to the film itself which has a so-so presentation, but with a great deal of contrast boosting as well as some cropping issues that comes later throughout the film.Eventually throughout several points much later in the film, there are instances of new 'chyron' title cards spliced in,possibly due to the source material or for other strange reasons. For example, about 51 minutes into the film, throughout the scene in which the film's lead character Francis and a team of doctors read Caligari's medical diary,a new set of a poorly typed chyron title card appears against a dark blue background, referring to the diary page intertitle that the men are reading off-screen.Shortly thereafter,as the next scene appears as Caligari is asleep,a whole new set of the same pisspoor chyron title card appear, this time against a plain black background and the fonts have been changed as well. They both look as if they were created by high school students taking TV production class ! The other big downfall with this particular version is the very unnacceptable orchestral musical score taken from the classical piece of music which repeats itself throughout the latter parts of the film and therefore definitely does not match the setting nor the tone of the movie.Other than the horrid scores used for the restored Kino release, this score is annoying and painfully distracting to hear.My recommendation is to definitely stick to the excellent Image/David Shepard release with outstanding image quality,Timothy Brock's excellent score,Film historian Mike Budd's informative and outstanding commentary track, and also the appropriate english recreation of the films' landmark expressionistic intertitles. This Vintage version ranks with the Madacy version of another German silent classic METROPOLIS as one of the worst presentations of any great silent film on DVD ! It too also has a lame, unreadable biography on the star of the title role,Werner Krauss.

DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1920) *** Transfer: **1/2
John Barrymore's legendary and starmaking role as both Jekyll and Hyde in the original 1920 silent classic. The transfer used here has definitely been taken from the 2001 Alpha Video release which itself combined both Paramount and Blackhawk Film prints of varying quality and features a measly edited and weakly presented music score ranging from a pipe organ to orchestral sources. An acceptable, but slow presentation of this underrated favorite so I would recommend getting the Kino,Killiam Shows (only available on out-of-print Laserdisc and VHS),and Image releases for the better deal.It has a three and a half page unreadable biography of John Barrymore as well.

What should've been three good transfers of these all-time silent film favorites ended up being a dismally dissappointing and distracting DVD experience in terms of both presentation and quality.Definitely go for the higher priced, restored editions of these above-mentioned classic films and strongly suggest avoiding it to anyone, but the very, very cheap collector.
