3 out of 5 stars GOOD AND ENTERTAINING; NOTHING MORE.......2006-07-20

Unlike the two sequels, this first installment was actually not a waste of time. It had the correct mix of everything-sex, violence, mystery and not to many victims. There is such a thing as overkilling, even in sensless slasher flicks. This could have been the launching pad for some decent sequels. Such was not the case. The story behind the story was told just right. Parts of this movie were corny, but any slasher fan will be satisfied. I was , but not much more.

1 out of 5 stars it SUCKS.......2005-09-04

I rented this movie just last week, after the first 30 minutes i realized that i had already seen this before, latenight on cable. One of the worst B movies ive ever seen. Bad acting, bad filming, nothing realy scary.

4 out of 5 stars Another reason Full Moon Productions is missed...........2005-05-25

Full Moon productions made some of the best cheesy horror movies of all time. Puppet Master and Subspecies are two wonderful examples. Witchouse is another of their great hidden treasures.

When Elizabeth LeFay gathers her college friends to her old, family mansion of May Day, she invites the diverse group for a party. What ensues is a gory, revenge blood bath where Elizabeth's ancestor, an infamous witch named Lilith LeFay, rises from the dead and extracts revenge on the descendents of the puritans who murdered her, three hundred years before.

Yes, the special effects aren't the best, neither is the acting, but the over all energy of the film is infectious and you find yourself sucked in and swept away over the scant 70 minutes the film takes.

A fun, fast escape from reality, Witchouse is a buried treasure worth digging up.

2 out of 5 stars withchouse falls flat.......2004-07-19

The movie had a somewhat interesting begining. An entire group of people are invited to an old haunted mansion by a witch with a desire for revenge. Revenge for her ancestors which were killed by you guessed it the ancentors of the visitors. The movie had a classic horror film feel to it. One it took place in a haunted, or supposidly haunted mansion. Two the story was one featured in many classic horror films(a witch who is killed during the puritan era is back to inflict revenge.)There were things about the film I did find interesting. One was the odd way some of the scenes were shot. This reminded me of the classic episodes of the batman televion series were the camera would lean slightly in one direction. I thought the protagonist character who was an applied science major was somewhat original in comparision to the sterotypical stoners who accompany him to the mansion. There acting was sub par and laughable at times. (not in a good way) The antagonist( the girl who bring her evil withc ancenstor back to life was an alright actress who at times does a decent job added to the film. The costumes of makeup were actually done well, especially the makeup of the lead resurrected witch. In spite of it positives witchouse falls flat because of bad acting and mediocre writing.

3 out of 5 stars B-Movie thrills.......2004-05-18

Some rich college kids who are descendants of the mob who burned those notoriously accused of witchcraft, are invited to a mysterious house by a classmate who they used to pick on in high school {the odd dark-haired, black-wearing "freak" who actually had deeper interests in life than merely getting drunk and smoking marijuana}; and there are a couple of stoner characters herein which personify this lowlife trait - as well as other pretentious suburban bunnies; but that seems to be the perfect bait; a wonderful Lair that could be appreciated by any Satanist, and are greeted by the resident mistress of the house - a gorgeous brunette in black with long-flowing garments, who subsequently invites them to participate in a seance after revealing a silver pentagram on the floor while another two disappear into the fetters of the mansion to indulge in the sacrament. The resident 'witch' lapses into a trance, summoning forth a hag-witch ancestor who incrementally preys upon the group in kind.

One by one they are dispatched and turned into zombies - their souls absorbed by the hag, until a "nerdy" couple finally confront her with the scientific method. A seeming statement of technology countering superstition. The prosthetics are average 'FX/CGI is most remarkable here, with many power bolts being thrown about. The hag is a bit cannibalistic / vampiric at times, seeking justice for being murdered. Of note, in one scene, one of the characters is whisked into the past to be in the place of the 'witch' being burned, that he may know what it feels like, by what his christian ancestors committed, was a nice touch.
This film pretty much amounts to the plethora of movies capitalizing on the 'iwtchtryal' misjustices of the christian past, although for the record, no accused 'witches' were actually burned in America, which was the modes of execution in Europe, whereas the colonies preferred the methods of including slow-hanging, dowsing, the hand vice, and various method of torture. Of course, these were not actual "witches", Satanists, etc. anyway, but victims of petty squabbled from neighbors; attractive women who refused the advances from the Witchfynders, of roving husbands that accused them of seducing them, instead of admitting to infidelity; solitary persons upon which urban legendry was projected, etc., not practicing 'witches'. That fact stated, Witchouse is pure entertainment fare, ideal for parties perhaps, but not for any serious consideration.

This film does contain the ubiquitous demoralization in the end. Good as a rental

1 out of 5 stars Horrendously bad and annoying.......2005-10-13

Typical tale of witchcraft, some college kids dig up a few corpses (to identify the DNA), the witch takes over their bodies and turns the rest into ghouls. A few are left to fight against her, helped out by a mysterious guy who knows the secret of the witch. But none of that really matters.

I don't mind if somebody wants to rip off the hand-held camcorder style of Blair Witch, but puh-leeze, let there be some reason for it. Not only is there no reason for it here, but all the scenes which might have been in the movie - the ones which advance the plot and flesh out the characters - have been jettisoned in favor of having the college kids do a bunch of utterly pointless interviews, which gives them an excuse to use a camcorder. This is as rancid as film making gets.

Just when I thought I'd had all I could take of pointless camcorder footage, along comes a solid quarter hour of camcorder footage, just interviewing random citizens that live in this town, most of it done for comic relief I guess. Though it wasn't funny. I put the DVD player on 8X fast forward and it still took several minutes to get through it.

Then we get to go through a house as viewed through the camcorder - with the low battery light blinking the entire time. Everyone acts really really scared, until they find the ghouls. Then they aren't scared any more. Apparently they filmed these scenes on different days and nobody bothered to remember that they were acting scared in the previous scene.

Lest I forget, the main character is completely obnoxious. You'll be rooting for him do die in the most gruesome way. He lives. The other characters are utterly banal.

I normally enjoy Full Moon pictures, they usually have a very original plot and make the most of their minuscule budgets. However, director J.R. Bookwalter has no use for originality - he's one of those people who look at what has made money for other people and then tries to copy it. It's people like him that are the reason Hollywood sucks as bad as it does, and now it looks like Full Moon pictures is going in that direction as well. He also manages to get the worst performances possible out of his actors.

Avoid this thing like the plague.

3 out of 5 stars Better as a stand alone than a sequel.......2005-06-03

When a couple of Goth teens are murdered as they videotape their favorite make out spot, a team of archeologists are called in to identify the teens and gain clues to their murder. Met with hostility by the town, they discover four graves on the murder site, and then must unlock that mystery as well.

While the movie has the fun energy level and cheesy special effects that we've come to know and love from Full Moon, this story has more plot holes than cohesive plot threads. For example, in Witchouse, Lilith LeFey was brought back to live of the 300 year anniversary of her murder. However, This movie gives the date of her death as 1826. the math doesn't hold up. The ending, also, gave me a massive headache. I was left staring at the screen and wondering what the heck happened. It just didn't make sense and didn't flow with the rest of the film. Also, the dead Goth teens are what brought the team to town are mentioned only in the beginning and then ignored for the last hour of film.

My only other complaint involves part of the film's style. This came out right after the first Blair Witch film, so large chunks of this film are shown only through a home video camera, in a parody of the other film's style. Full Moon is best when it's original, not when it's copying someone else.

Yes, there are better horror films and there are many horror movies that are much, much worse. Yet, if you're looking for a film that's entertaining and you don't think the story through to much, it's definitely fun.

1 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY!.......2002-02-23

I am a fan of Full moon Pictures and when I heard of Witchouse II I thought to myself I must see it!But I was wrong.Witchouse II offers no screams, chills and thrills. This movie is a waste of time and money.

4 out of 5 stars I hated the first one, but I liked this one..........2000-12-15

J.R. Bookwalter took the hand Full Moon dealt him and made a NON SEQUEL to the first movie of the same name. I felt this worked SO much better. The effects work well, the acting is better than most Full Moon films and at least the darned movie was outdoors a lot more (unlike the first and most Full Moon trapped in the house plot devices). The Blair Witch-esque parts are really good.

Good job, J.R. Charlie Band should let you direct MORE Full Moon films.

Full Moon recommendations on DVD include: Pit & The Pendulum and Dead Hate The Living.

4 out of 5 stars The Bookwalter Witch Project.......2005-05-30

As a disclaimer, I am not especially a fan of horror or supernatural movies, but I am a fan of Producer/Director J. R. Bookwalter. This film, although titled "Witchouse 3," really shares nothing with the two earlier films sharing the name (other than the presence of a character named Lilith). This time the Witchouse in question is located on a beach, and happens to be inhabited by three very attractive women, who on occasion feel the need to unwind in their swim suits.

The plot concerns inadvertently summoning an evil spirit (despite a seance scene featuring a woman in "Billy-Bob" teeth), and generally provides a couple of hours of fun frights if you are a fan of witch movies. Bookwalter has become much more nuanced as a director as he has matured, and the cast has good chemistry. This is a very well made (considering the sub-$30,000 budget, amazingly so) little horror film that supernatural fans should definitely investigate.

The best part of the DVD for me is the extras, which abound. There are bloopers and outtakes, interviews, and three (!) different commentary soundtracks, of which the one featuring Bookwalter is my personal favorite.

If you like witch movies, you will like this one. Good job, J.R.

3 out of 5 stars from Fringe Video Fanzine Issue #005.......2002-06-08

A well shot, character driven film with a good story and great cast from J.R. Bookwalter, the director of the underground zombie classic The Dead Next Door (1988). A true fan of independent cinema who waved any fee to co-write, produce, direct and edit this movie, only to reinvested the money into this DVD. Annie [played by Tanya Dempsey / Hell Asylum (2002); Shrieker (1997)] fleeing an abusive relationship decides to stay with a couple of old friends Stevie [played by Debbie Rochon / Bog People (2002); Dry Rot (2002)], and Rose [played by Tina Krause / Titanic 2000 (1999); Vampire Seduction (1998)], who happen to be in the middle of shooting a documentary about real life witches and covens. After discussing the film, the three girls under the influence of alcohol decide to take part in a fake ritual. Probably not a good thing to do as they accidentally awake the spirit of Lilith [Brinke Stevens / Sideshow (2000); Slumber Party Massacre (1982)] A witch with a bad attitude, and great make-up. She begins to haunt the three girls turning them against each other, or perhaps its the abusive boyfriend "...just seeking his own personal revenge...?" This mostly female driven piece has a great twist at the end as victims and opressors switch roles. The occasional nudity shots pad out the dialogue, however are not exploitive. This special edition disc is filled with extras such as behind the scenes home movies, three commentary tracks, an interview with the very intelligent and down to earth Debbie Rochon, bloopers & outtakes, and a early J.R. Bookwalter home movie from 1979.

2 out of 5 stars Better than part 1 & 2, but not enough........2002-04-08

I bought the movie because of the enticing story synopsis but was left flat due to the cheap look of the movie. Wasn't horrible, but wasn't professional looking either. Not a waste of time though, I would recommend checking it out, just don't expect a mainstream film.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, I was surprised!.......2002-02-24

The original Witchouse was good Full Moon fun...I didn't care for Witchouse 2...and after reading about Witchouse 3: Demon Fire, I wasn't too sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.

This film, shot for a surprisingly paltry $26,000 is a great little horror flick.

Debbie Rochon, Tanya Dempsey, and Tina Krause play three friends who are being haunted by an unseen figure after doing a mock witchcraft ritual for a documentary. There's quite the little mystery that ensues and some very eerie and interesting things happen to them. Turns out it's that sassy Lilith, the wacky witch from the first two movies, back with a vengeance. The movie does throw a lot of surprises at you...you never really are sure what's going to happen next. The story holds together cohesively, the acting is superb (it really feels like the three leads have been best buds for years, and they are all very fleshed out characters with their own personalities), and everything snaps along at a very nice pace.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who like witch movies (this is MUCH better than "The Craft"), or just horror in general. The gore is kind of light in this one, but everything else in the movie more than makes up for that.

The DVD offers a few nice extras too (including widescreen and Dolby 5.1 surround sound)...it's a very good deal! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The Witch is back...Again!.......2001-12-15

Well, J.R. Bookwalter does another terrific job making a Non-Sequel to the 1999 Full Moon hit, Witchouse.

With the exceptional work he did on Witchouse 2: Blood Coven, to me, it only seemed appropriate that he do 3. And thank God for that.

While taking the movie out of the spooky, old mansion scene, he instead places it in a California beach house with 3 hot babes, all best friends, and a Witch names Lilith.

Now, all those, myself included, who think that Ariauna Albright should have reprised her role, really should give Brinke Steven a chance. I know I didn't in another review I had written. Brinke takes over for Ariauna as Lilith. Though the film does not center around the character of Lilith, it still manages to make a totally screwed up soap opera type movie, with horror elements that blend to make a really great Full Moon/Tempe video production.

The DVD is loaded with extras. 3 commentary tracks, bloopers, outtakes, etc...totally work the money...
