Once intended as a feature for Johnny Depp, the long-germinating feature film adaptation of Marvel Comics' cult title Ghost Rider stars Nicolas Cage as motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who transforms into a skull-faced angel of vengeance to battle the forces of evil. Though perhaps a bit too mature for the role, Cage brings a degree of humor to the outrageous proceedings; he's well matched by the Easy Rider himself Peter Fonda, amusingly cast as Mephistopheles, the demon with whom Blaze strikes a bargain to save his father, and in turn, causes his transformation into Ghost Rider. Wes Bentley is also fine as Blackheart, the rebellious offspring of Mephistopheles, and Blazes' chief opponent in the film. They're joined by a solid supporting cast which includes Donal Logue, Eva Mendes, and Sam Elliott, but their participation and a relentless barrage of CGI effects can't hide the fact that the story itself, though largely faithful to its comic origins, is rife with clichéd characterizations and glum B-movie dialogue. Fans of the venerable title may cry foul over this adaptation (as they did over helmer Mark Steven Johnson's previous comic-to-movie feature, Daredevil), but less stringent viewers may enjoy the fiery visuals and Cage's typically quirky performance. --Paul Gaita

Wow..........2007-07-06

I never saw Nicholas Cage as a comic book character! Hmm...if it was for the fake hair he might have impressed me! The movie is good. One man's quest to the best turns into a nightmare that only he can fix. He has to defeat the devil's son so he can defeat the devil. Eva Mendes heard it was a comic book made movie so she left her acting skills at the door. Other than that it was pretty good entertainment.

A Hell of a movie.......2007-07-06

I was never a fan of the Ghost Rider comics, though I would have been if they had been introduced about ten years earlier.
This movie is just a great adventure for a fan or someone like me who had never read a single copy of the comic.
The story stands up by itself due to the excellent expositions coming from Sam Elliott. Nicholas Cage gives an excellent performance based (sort of) on the characters of Evil Knievel and Elvis Presley. I think that his performance in the conversion scene is nearly as good as the scene where Spencer Tracy played Dr Jekyll turning into Mr Hyde. Of course, Spencer didn't have the wonderful special effects to back up his performance.
I must say that even though the plot and the performances by the actors were up to the highest standards, the real stars of this movie were the special effects and CGI graphics. These were far above average and well used, but were not allowed to interfere with the story line and character developement, Which are an important part of any Marvel story.
The final touch that really makes the show great is the song "riders in the Sky" performed by the Australian band Spiderbait. I hope that they have albums for sale, because this is an excellent version of this old ballad turned into a hard rock masterpiece.
This movie is a "must have" for horror, adventure, and Marvel comics fans.

The only scene that struck me as creative was when Johnny's using his motorcycle skills on the freeway trying to harass his ex-girlfriend into pulling over. The main problem with most of it is the lulls between action sequences don't have much relevence to them, no scheming or planning, so there's no anticipation or speculation about what's going to go down next or how something's going to pan out. There's nothing tying it all together. The supposed emotional character moments also were too quick to the punch to convey any real humanity.

I'm a comics fan. I started reading comics in the 1950s.

I wondered how they could pull off this one... The more I thought about it, the more Nicholas Cage seemed perfect for the part. (He's a comics fan.)

I loved the story & special effects.

This was a good portrayal of a man who finally discovered the consequences of his deal with the devil. Nicholas did a good job of a man slowly discovering his abilities, coming to terms with them, and doing his best to make his own relationship with the devil.

It's not easy to make such a movie. You must deal with "old fans" like myself, and with new ones who are not familiar with the character.

Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, Independence Day, and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvelous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 1770s (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat's screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that elevated his earlier script for Saving Private Ryan. Unfortunately, Emmerich embraces clichés and hackneyed melodrama that a more gifted director would have avoided. Instead of attempting a truly great film about the most pivotal years of American history, Emmerich settles for a standard revenge plot with the Revolutionary War as an incidental backdrop.

On those terms, the film is engrossing and sufficiently intelligent, especially when militia leader Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) cagily negotiates with British General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) in one of the most rewarding scenes. For the most part, the story concerns Martin's anguished quest for revenge against ruthless redcoat Colonel Tavington (played with snide relish by Jason Isaacs), and the rise to manhood of Martin's eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), whose battlefield honor exceeds even that of his brutally volatile father. At its best, The Patriot conveys the horror of war among innocent civilians, and the epic battle scenes, while by no means masterful, are graphically intense and impressive. And although Ledger's love interest (Lisa Brenner) is too bland to register much emotion, the focus on family (which frequently relegates the war to background history) provides a suitable vehicle for Gibson, who matches his achievement in Braveheart with an effectively brooding performance. --Jeff Shannon

Still Great!.......2007-07-05

I purchased the video to use in my classroom. The students were studying the events leading up to the Declaration. I saw the movie when it was first released during the Bicentennial and loved it. I thought it was a perfect vehicle for my seventh grade class. They enjoyed the movie and were facsinated with the idea of a musical about history. The quality of the production was first rate and I was pleasently surprised at the additional musical number. I wasn't disappointed.

This is one of my favorite musicals, which was unavailable on VHS for many years. I remember seeing this movie in Philadelphia during a class trip with my 6th grade class in June 1976, during the bicential celebration. It is a wonderful movie for young and old, a great movie to share with your older children around July 4th so that they can appreciate Independence Day and the struggles of our Founding Fathers to vote for Independence~

History brought to life.......2007-05-30

I am ordering the Director's Cut because the copy I have is VHS. This is my favorite musical and film. I saw the play on Broadway and was thrilled when it was made into a movie, using many of the same actors from Broadway instead of 'movie stars'.

The most stunning thing about the story is that this was living history but a history we were never taught when I was in school in the 1950's and 1960's. As can be seen by President Nixon's request to have something removed, people were still not too willing to face the truths about the Founding Fathers; they were human, they disagreed, they had to compromise and, in the end, they came together (almost) in agreement.

The music....I know every song by heart. Instead of intruding on the story, the music amazingly carries the story forward. I thought then and I still believe that this should be part of the curriculem of American History classes for elementary students.

movie review.......2007-05-26

What a wonderful film.... the music is delightful and so appropriate for the storyline. And it is a great way to reflect on the history of the founding of our country. The time flew by and before you know it, the movie is over. Would recommend this for young and old without hesitation.

The 1776 DVD - Historical and Entertaining.......2007-05-15

I found the video of the musical 1776 excellent. I had seen it before and seen the play on Broadway and it is always a good show. The thing about the musical is it brings to the forefront your knowledge of history and entertains you as well. As I read the Biography of Ben Franklin and John Adams I remember the scenes from the movie it enhances my expirience. I would highly recommend anyone this video if you like history and Musicals.

Marvel Comics' first family of superherodom, the Fantastic Four, hits the big screen in a light-hearted and funny adventure. Among the many entries in the comic-book-movie frenzy, Fantastic Four is refreshing because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Characterization isn't too deep, and the action is a bit sparse until the final reel (like most "first" superhero movies, it has to go through the "how did we get these powers and what we will do with them" churn). But it's a good-looking cast, and original comic-book cocreator Stan Lee makes his most significant Marvel-movie cameo yet, in a speaking role as the FF's steadfast postal carrier, Willie Lumpkin. Newcomers to superhero movies might find the idea of a family with flexibility, strength, invisibility, and force fields a retread of The Incredibles, but Pixar's animated film was very much a tribute to the FF and other heroes of the last 40 years. The irony is that while Fantastic Four is an enjoyable B-grade movie, it's the tribute, The Incredibles, that turned out to be a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi

Not Bad But Hardly A Replacement For The Original Release.......2007-06-28

Although this new editiion of the Fantastic Four movie may seem like nothing but a ploy for ripping off some of your hard-earned money, I have to admit that the producers have inserted alot of important key scenes back into a movie that it has successfully elevated the movie above it's original popcorn-movie status.

However, I was generally quite dissatisfied with this DVD release because, it seems as if the editors were rushed to put this edition out into the market in time for the release of the 2nd Fantastic 4 movie.

For one thing, the video quality of the extended cut is actually somewhat inferior to the original, in general, if you're using a 40" and above HD (or full HD) screen, you will notice that the overal picture seem a little duller and blurrer than the original release. There is also a brief scene of Reed and Sue in the Baxter Building where the film appears to be extremely noisy; I suspect the editors just didn't have the time to complete that scene to meet the dvd release deadline.

Also, the soundtrack for some of the reinserted scenes were almost non-existent, and a few of the original sound effects and certain original scores written specifically for a few of the key scenes have been replaced.

I would recommend anyone who is a hard-core fan of this movie or those who doesn't own a copy of the original release to go ahead and grab this edition of the movie, but if you already own a copy of the original release(standard or deluxe two-disc release) of this movie, you might want to consider renting it first before considering purchasing.

having seen the original theatrical release and found it fantastic i must say this about the extended dvd version. this ranks in my opinion along with SUPERMAN THE MOVIE ( 1978),SPIDERMAN 3 and SUPERMAN RETURNS as the greatest superhero movie's . in this day of utter crap out there in the movie world what these movie's contain is a lot of heart and are really well made. so absolute cheers to these fine movies they all have something special in them. nuff'said

Some good scenes but I can't recommend it.......2007-06-22

Long story short, I liked Fantastic Four. It had it's faults, mainly it's portrayal of Dr. Doom, but it was fun. I was disappointed in the extended cut though. Most of the added scenes were OK. More character development, more story, a reference to the Puppet Master and that Herbie robot, but in the end, it felt as though they just Frankensteined this thing together from leftover parts. The scenes with Reed and Sue in the planetarium then again on the bridge being the exact same scene was the worst offender. And the part where Alicia gives Thing a spongebath just felt wrong on so many levels. There were a couple of interesting documentaries and the original version is thoughtfully included on this disc so for those who haven't bought it yet. All in all, worth watching just to see what could've been but it's no improvement over the original.

Almost Better Than Breathing!.......2007-06-21

This movie is like a rocketship that you get on, and then you ride into space and the turbulence doesn't even effect you at all, and it's a very smooth landing either on whatever planet the rocketship lands or on its eventual re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. Fantastic Four rules the school!

If you've ever seen other comic book movies like Batman or Spiderman or Darkman or Superman or X-Man, you know that they are usually not very good. But the Fantastic Four are absolutely excellent and every superhero movie should take notes on how great this movie really is.

Fantastic Four is about four friends who have wonderful magical powers. One guy is super-limber, and another guy can turn into fire, and another guy is really really strong, and there is a girl who can become invisible if she wants to. Never before and never again have so many different and exciting superpowers been on display, and you will jump out of your chair cheering every time they get to defeat bad guys (which is often). You may not even want to sit down because you'll be out of your chair that much. However, if you want to get good exercise, then you will sit down from time to time, because then it will be very good for your quads.

The special effects are thrilling, the actors are dynamic, and the story is just like a rocketship.

I hope you stop reading this review right now and go rent this movie immediately. And if you are still reading this sentence, why don't you go re-read the last sentence and ask yourself why you're so disobedient?

Be careful: the stretchy man and the fire man may come and get you!!! Just kidding.

Do yourself and your community a favor and buy many copies of this movie.

My Opinion: The Fantastic Four is an awesome movie. One of the best superhero groups/Family ever created. Stan Lee out did himself on this group of famous superheroes. The Fantastic Four Rocks.
