Description
Returning to Blood Island, a ship catches fire and explodes after its crew is slaughtered by the gruesome half-dead, green-blooded Beast of Blood. The horrendous creature washes ashore and terrorizes the island inhabited by the mad Dr. Lorca (longtime Philippine star Eddie Garcia), who attaches heads to a hulking headless body and makes life miserable for our heroes, two-fisted John Ashley and beautiful Celeste Yarnall (of Elvis Presley movie fame). The couple journeys to the forbidden Valley of Doom, filled with Lorca's hideous failed experiments, where a monstrous climax explodes in a cataclysm of unforgettable horror!

When you consider its unfortunate production history, Cursed turned out surprisingly well as a werewolf thriller that horror buffs will appreciate. It's hardly the disaster critics made it out to be, but extensive rewriting, reshooting, recasting, and lengthy delays in production and release (including the elimination of R-rated gore to earn a PG-13 rating) clearly took their toll. The result is a fun but flawed monster-show that begins when a young talk-show producer (Christina Ricci) and her teenaged brother (Jesse Eisenberg) are bitten by a werewolf, setting the stage for a horror-in-Hollywood scenario that reunites director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson, creators of the Scream franchise. What could have been a classic horror comedy is instead a fairly solid, if unremarkable, exercise in Los Angeles lycanthropy, featuring werewolf makeup by Rick Baker (combined with CGI transformation effects, of course) and some of Williamson's snappy dialogue and trademark pop-culture references. The title of Cursed doubles as a description of this movie's ultimate fate, but in a market filled with straight-to-video horror fodder, it's anything but a lost cause. The supporting cast includes Shannon Elizabeth, Portia de Rossi and Joshua Jackson, so genre aficionados should definitely check it out. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Packed with even more intense thrills than audiences experienced in theaters, this unrated version of Wes Craven's CURSED brings you the terror of werewolves as never before! Christina Ricci (MONSTER), Jesse Eisenberg (THE VILLAGE), Joshua Jackson (TV's DAWSON'S CREEK), Judy Greer (THE VILLAGE), and Milo Ventimiglia (TV's GILMORE GIRLS) find themselves caught up in an unimaginable horror! A werewolf loose in Los Angeles changes the lives of three young adults who, after being mauled by the beast, learn that the only way to break the curse put upon them is to kill the one who started it all! From the creators of SCREAM, this never-before-seen version is shockingly more frightening and undeniably more fun than the original release!

OK WEREWOLF ENTRY! WORTH 2 1/2 STARS AND A LOOK!.......2007-07-04
This is not a classic by any means, but I thought it had enough going for it to warrant a "worth watching" review. The story seems to teeter between serious and humor and that is it's major downfall. The cast does what is can with the material given to them. The DVD transfer looks good and worth checking out.
An Entertaining Horror Film.......2007-06-14
Cursed is a horror film that does not take itself too seriously! I loved the scene where they describe the werewolf to the police using human terms since no one believes them when they say werewolf. An amusing time! If you like a horror flick with some comedy, then you should like this. If you like a horror flick that is all serious and believable, then you should probably pass on this. Also note that because of the kill scenes, the PG-13 version sucks, so if you want to see it, get the unrated version!
Werewolves, support this film!.......2007-04-26
Well, as I am indeed an actual werewolf, I liked this movie. I found it to treat the subject of werewolves with respect, while maintaining the dignity and resoursfulness of the prey (Ricci and her onscreen brother). I especially liked the car scene where the girl is cut in half, it was very surreal and attention grabbing. The whole silver thing is a bit outdated, since everyone knows we can only be killed by fire or decapitation, but all in all, not a bad attempt by you humans. Good luck actually using anything in this movie to protect you from an actual werewolf though, lol
Light-Hearted film about Werewolfs.......2007-04-23
This movie was better than I thought. It has a young cast of familiar faces from both popular films and TV shows. It's actually on of the better Wes Kraven films in a long time (Wishmaster SUCKED)...
The plot kinda reminded me of the LOST BOYS, where it envolved siblings confronting becoming Warewolves and had to destroy the warewolf that turned them.
The movie didn't have any lows and the story flowed well. The special effects were so-so (But to me, nothing beats the FX in regards to Warewolves found the Underworld films.)
It's a cool film to watch, all and all..
Serious Werewolf movie not even! But it is quite funny IN IT'S CHEAP HIGHSCHOOL DRAMA CLASS WAY its ONLY redeeming virtue!.......2007-04-16
Cursed in some ways does not even attempt to be a serious Werewolf Movie so I can not grade it harshly for being weakly written. Cursed has a Movie of the Week feel to it. Curse is bubble gum for the eyes fare for those like me who are old enough to Remember weak lame but always good for a laugh old Network Movies of the week. The special effects are oh so average, the script is oh so predictable. The good part about this movie is it is done in a way that is oh so funny. While Cursed does try to take itself seriously on the surface it is almost a spoof on werewolf movies in general.
If you want some really good werewolf fare buy. Underworld the first installment. All the werewolves went lame in Underworld 2 which is not worth buying in my humble opinion. An extremely good werewolf movie is also, Wolf by Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Spader, and Kate Nelligan. Wolf movie rocked my werewolf flick world but good. I collect Werewolf movies and this one while weak in many ways is at least worthy of its place in my collection. Dog Soldiers is another great werewolf DVD.
If you buy this movie expecting grearness you will be disappointed. I havew lived long enough to know few studios \ producers \ directors do the background work needed to pull off a really great werewolf movie. To do a great werewolf movie you have to immerse yourself in the world of Lycantrophy and be willing to spend time feretting out the insightful details that make for interesting plot points. Good tight writing and interestingly well developed characters in some kind of conflict round out the mix in a well made werewolf movie. Most folks that truy love werewolf movies are real lycantrophiles and we don't warm to ready made werewolf junk thrown on film. Those who love a truely good werewolf movie would rate Cursed barely 1 star. Most Lycan lovers give Cursed 2 stars only because they were feeling unusually kind for a moment.
Cursed covers well worn old ground of werewolf fare and breaks no new ground at all. Cursed is good enough to be watched once easily. Best to reserve cursed for those times when an unruly group of your feral brain cells want to watch a movie while the rest of you is sleep or thinking of something worthwhile.

In the tradition of Lord of the Rings come this medieval tale with plenty of action and adventure, starring Jane March (Color of Night). Customer Reviews:
Great Move..........2007-06-26
Once you get past the cheesiness of the effects and some of the costumes, this is a really great movie, with an amazing and surprisingly sweet storyline.
Set in a Viking like place, Freya, daughter of the King must go to a "cursed" island where a horrible Beast lives to avenge her father, presumed dead because of a made-up story told by Sven, one of the people who went to the island with her father. When Freya goes to the island however, she must stay there with the Beast to set her best friend Ingrid and her Father, who is extremely sick, free.
During Freya's time on the island, she becomes close to the Beast and finds his soft side. She eventually comes to care greatly for him and see past his frightening and monster-like exterior.
Yes, it is a Beauty and the Beast story, but who doesn't like the classic fairy tale. True love, adventure, and lots of action... Blood of Beasts is a great movie... :)
Blood of Beasts.......2007-03-11
A cash in on The Vikings style of movie. Acting OK but no substance to the movie
Total C rate movie, dont waste your money.......2007-01-17
The theme was good, thats where the good ended. The Acting was predictable and a very cut rate. It was too threatrical, more like a BroadWay Show then a movie.
Blood of Beasts.......2006-08-08
Product was okay, but the send time was a little to long.
Bad fantasy done poorly.......2006-06-23
I had hopes for "Blood of Beasts," upon seeing the cover. The information presented on the back cover seemed interesting enough. Maybe it was the clever LOTR-inspired cover art combined with the natural beauty of Jane March that allured me to rent this drek.
Basically, it's "Beauty and the Beast" set in the curiously warm Viking world. Scientists have told me there was a period of global warming about 800 years ago, but palm trees in Norway? It must be true, because they didn't have enough lumber to make a real Viking boat. Two weeks voyage on that glorified canoe?
So there's little point in telling you the rest of this story, because you've probably seen the Disney movie, which was a lot better.
If you want a real Viking story, get "The 13th Warrior."

"Suzi Lorraine, arguably the most beautiful actress working in east coast B-cinema, has never given a better performance as the no-nonsense Sister Helen... "[I was] delighted... to receive Terry M. Wests new SATAN'S SCHOOLGIRLS. Not only does it have a nun but it also has wayward girls (TRANSLATION: slutty bimbos) in private school outfits! That combination should be illegal...It will put a smile on your face." -JoeHorror.com

Description
Peter Cushing (Asylum) and Robert Flemyng (The Horrible Dr. Hitchcock) star in this European tale of terror. A crazed etymologist is dabbling in gruesome experiments that are turning his beautiful daughter into a vampire-beast with an insatiable lust for blood! From Cushing's investigations of the opening atrocities to the fiery finale--this gory Victorian thriller is definitely not for the squeamish!

Are you blind or am I on drugs? Discuss........2006-02-03
Surely the film is a comedic and technical triumph. My belief is that if one views the film as a straightforward English period chiller you'll be missing the point even if gaining some enjoyment for all that. Try looking for all the visual gags of perspective, shadow, illusion and cliche and be amazed! They come thick and fast.
Best viewed in 'atmospheric' conditions with or without the chemical enhancement of your choice, but even if viewed straight your mind will warp.
Or I could be psychotic...
An Opportunity to See Vanessa Howard Again.......2006-01-30
Ignore the most negative of the comments, "The Blood Beast Terror" is not total garbage. It has the Hammer Studio's feel which it was trying to imitate; with a decent imitation of the Hammer Victorian production design and a performance by Peter Cushing (as Police Inspector Quennell). It is also features one of the few available film appearances of Vanessa Howard, unfortunately she has only a supporting scream queen role as Quennell's daughter Meg. Check out "Girly" if you want to see a lot more of this underutilized actress.
"The Blood Beast Terror's" main weakness is its low budget which resulted in some horribly lame special effects, although the budget cannot be entirely blamed as just a little imagination in this area would have resulted in something far more effective. It also suffers from a condensed story that does not supply enough scientific details to make the basic premise interesting.
So instead of a sci-fi/horror picture, it is more of a detective story with some laughable horror elements. But it is a decent detective story with enough misdirection to produce several surprising revelations. Contrary to several other comments, I had no problem with the ending, finding the idea of a moth (even a giant one) being drawn to a flame quite appropriate, although so poorly staged as to be groan inducing.
There is some great comic relief in the underplayed performance of Glynn Edwards (as Sergeant Allen) and the overplayed performance of Roy Hudd, as the jaded morgue attendant who casually eats his meals off the slabs in the morgue (complete with cadavers). There is unintended comic relief in the casting of 30 year-old Wanda Ventham as the mad scientist's on-the-make "teenage" daughter. Nothing exceptional but a cut above much of the 60's cheap sci-fi and horror.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
Cushing never gives less than his best, but..........2005-08-11
Argh. Don't waste your time on this dud. It was made by Tigon, the studio that occupied third place to Hammer and Amicus in the British horror genre of the '60s. They turned out some fairly good films, but this one's lamentable. The only things I enjoyed about it were Peter Cushing, who never turned out a bad performance, and the curious casting of Robert Flemyng -- it wasn't great acting, but his natural bug-eyed features provided an ironic point of interest. The main vampire is a giant moth played unconvincingly by a stuntman in a cape. After a series of murders, Cushing identifies a handful of what look like oversized moth scales, and being a great detective, instantly solves the case: "I think the Doctor has created a giant moth." Well, obviously.
But don't forget the laughs!.......2005-05-26
I go along with other reviewer's comments -this is not a milestone in film horror, but for me the whole movie is saved by Roy Hudd's amazing cameo as a distinctly unbalanced morgue attendant. He uses his music hall skills (vaudeville) to send himself, as well as the plot, sky high. Well worth the money for his scene alone. Should be entitled How To Steal a Movie.
Atmospheric Chiller With An Unusual Central Creature.......2003-10-25
"The Blood Beast Terror", is a very enjoyable and well constructed little horror tale which suffers because of the weakness in the appearance of the monster of the title which is a giant Death's Head moth that takes human form. The lack of imagination used in its construction detracts from what is otherwise a very atmospheric and beautifully filmed story which may not certainly be the most frightening tale ever filmed but still has alot to commend it. Peter Cushing one of England's foremost horror movie performers lends his usual dignified presence to the proceedings here and helps lift this 1967 Tigon productions feature at times almost up to the same level as his great accomplishments with the famed Hammer Studios horror efforts.
Despite this films quite sensational title, the storyline once you get past the idea of the Giant Moth Creature, is actually an evenly paced mystery drama that takes its time to reveal all the secrets of what is occuring. Along the way we are treated to a very handsomely constructed film set in Victorian times, the usual favourite time period for these British Horror efforts. Peter Cushing plays Inspector Quennell who is investigating a series of ghastly murders where the victims are found drained of their blood and savagely marked with horrific wounds that seem to have been inflicted by some strange undefinable animal. Finding at the site of the latest murder some strange scaley scraps off some type of insect or reptile Inspector Quennell begins to have his suspicions in particular of expert entomologist Dr. Mallinger (Robert Flemyng) who seems to be quite evasive when questioned about possible causes of death for the victims. Unbeknown to the Inspector Dr. Mallinger has been conducting some quite bizzare experiments with certain types of moths and has succeeded in creating a giant sized Death's Head Moth that can take human form. Masquerading as the Doctor's daughter Clare the creature is the one who has been committing the murders on young men attracted to her supposedly human charms. Dr. Mallinger in his attempts to create a mate for this moth creature however realises that for the experiment to work human blood is needed to aid in the mate's incubation. After being forced to change address when the Inspector gets on his trail Dr. Mallinger sees that Quennell's own daughter Meg would be ideal for their purposes and Clare on the pretense of becoming friends with her lures Meg to their new home where under hypnosis Meg has blood extracted to feed the creature slowly developing in the pod. However when Clare takes the form of the killer moth again and commits another murder, this time of the estate gardener which draws more attention to him again, Dr. Mallinger realises that what he has created is now out of control and he destroys the hatching pod. Clare however then kills him and goes in pursuit of other victims to feed on. Finally catching up with the creature after it attacks Meg's young friend William, Inspector Quennell and the sergeant manage to ingnite the flying creature which then burns up and falls to the ground gradually turning back into the form of Clare before it turns to ashes.
Not an exactly scary tale but well produced and earnestly played despite the letdown with the rather flimsy creature of the title. Tigon productions came a definite step behind horror leaders such as Hammer and Amicus during the 1960's and early 70's however here they have produced a handsome period film with honest and interesting performances from the leads who take their roles seriously. Peter Cushing, already of course a veteran of many classic horror films was new to Tigon productions with this role in "The Blood Beast Terror", but delivers his usual solid performance and treats the case a bit like a Sherlock Holmes mystery. Robert Flemyng as the fanactical Dr. Mallinger has just the right elements of menace and secrecy in his playing to really increase the overall tension of the piece. Wanda Ventham is also excellent in the dual roles of Clare and cold blooded murdering Moth Creature. In what could be a silly character to play she definately injects just the right elements of seductive allure and bitchiness into her character to hold the viewers attention. Glynn Edwards as Sergeant Allen and especially Roy Hudd as a distastefully comical mortuary attendant also deliver great performances that help lift up the largely unbelievable story to a very watchable level. Beautiful locations and settings feature strongly in this story and give "The Blood Beast Terror", tremendous atmosphere and a very polished look that stands up definately to the more famous Hammer horror efforts.
If you can get past the obvious lack of care in creating a suitable central monster for this horror effort "The Blood Beast Terror", is an enjoyable viewing experience. Peter Cushing in my belief never really gave an insincere or bad performance and was an expert in creating a believable character often out of slim material. While certainly a lesser horror effort I do enjoy the acting performances here and I recommend it to horror fans who are interested in some of the lesser studios efforts during this 1960's period when Hammer productions dominated British horror movie making.

A beast, but not at night, and hardly any blood.......2006-03-27
The one time I spit pop out of my nose was when the beast, who had spent the entire film shambling around, suddenly turns broad-jumper and makes a tremendous leap into the woods. After that, he (she?) goes back to shambling around. I'm suprised the poor thing even wanted to come to Earth, considering all the people it encountered were trying to kill it with incomprehensible psuedo-scientific dialogue, not to mention flare guns. All in all, though, this really isn't a bad film, although the monster really looks, as other reviewers have mentioned, like a gigantic paper-mache' puffin. Then there's the cute little Sea Monkey thing with the astronaut, who no one knows if he's dead or alive, including the astronaut himself. The ending is rather inconclusive -- you really don't know if it's a Bad Monster or not. Certainly not a great film, or even a good one...but it's _almost_ a good one. Don't miss the claws on the monster. How did he (she?) operate a spaceship with those things, anyway?
Good outside of the lame monster...........2005-04-12
Not bad at all!! This flick is everything I look for in a 50's sci-fi except for the homemade looking monster. Other than this paper-mache looking parrot from outer space, the direction, camera work, acting, and story were all first rate.
For the price you it can't be beat. Make sure you get the Alpha version with the red cover. The transfer and sound are far superior to the previous release of this film.
The Moral? Never Eat Sea Monkeys........2004-05-20
This sublime little gem from the one and only Roger Corman is a fun and cheesy way to spend 62 minutes of your life. After being launched into space via the magic of some of the lamest animation you will ever see, pilot John Corcoran loses control of his spacecraft and plummets to earth. For crashing at such high speed the spaceship is in remarkably good shape. NASA dispatches their one Jeep to the crash site and arrives within minutes. (Note: it is inadvisable to smoke cigarettes at an aircraft accident site.) John has one cut, but is dead, (evidently) although there is a lot of medical doubletalk about his skin color, so they whisk him to the base in the official NASA flatbed truck for examination.
Once back at the base John comes back to life with no warning. They draw a blood sample and see a hysterical piece of animation of one cell, oh sorry, 'alien amorphic cell structure', gobbling up another in the microscope. They decide they best put John in front of a fluoroscope to look inside him, and, (oh the humanity!) he is revealed to be teeming with what appear to be Sea Monkey embryos. John rapidly realizes that the thing that has been terrorizing the base since the crash is a Blood Beast from a different planet, and he is carrying its spawn. Surprisingly, he ends up leading the pro-monster lobby, and decides to reason with the Blood Beast. We actually get to see the felonious (murder and kidnapping) Blood Beast quite a bit (and his amusing shadow a couple of times, too.) It is normally good to get a lot of screen time for the monster in one of these movies, but here, I am not so sure it was that great of an idea, especially in daylight: the Blood Beast looks like a cross between something from 'Sigmund and the Sea Monsters' and a giant puffin with beak, claws, zipper, and very bad complexion. In short, the Blood Beast is a little less than horrifying. Ultimately the movie evokes a bit of 'It Conquered the World' or 'Zontar, the Thing From Venus' in the dramatic ending.
Throughout the movie there is dreadful acting (especially the women, for some reason), and great gothic music, which has been recycled from earlier Corman films. This movie was given the MST3K treatment to good effect, and I wish that version was available on DVD as well. Even without the MST3K treatment, this movie is fun to watch and makes you wish that they still made monster movies like this one. Thanks, Roger!
Night of the Bargain Basement Beast.......2004-02-20
Co-written and produced by Gene Corman, with Roger Corman as the executive producer, Night of the Blood Beast (1958) is a good representation of the Z grade science fiction movies of the late 50's.
Directed by Bernard L. Kowalski, who also helmed Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959), the movie stars, among others, John Baer, Angela Greene, and Ed Nelson, from Teenage Caveman (1958), The Brain Eaters (1959), and TV's Peyton Place (1964).
The movie starts off proper with an astronaut in a small capsule supposedly returning to Earth after a brief orbit. Something goes wrong, and after much techno babble, "The negative, cross-indexed hyper dyne ion chamber is reading 8 million psi!", "The multi-functional thyroid chronometer is unfunctional!", the small capsule crashes to Earth. Two individuals find the capsule (not much of a rescue party) and discover their space-traveling colleague is no longing among the living. They radio the rest of their small group, who soon arrive, and then they document everything and take the body back to some dinky, remote radar station they are using for a base. What they don't realize is that their chum didn't come back from space alone...oooooh...(cue creepy music)
A cursory analysis of the dead man reveals he is dead, but he isn't. The older scientist keeps saying, "That's impossible" every time they find another indication that the dead man may not really be dead. Soon after stuff starts happening...the radio goes kaput, the lights no longer light, vehicles no longer run...seems a magnetic field is playing havoc with just about everything. And to top things off, there's a space thingy running around, which makes it's appearance known by breaking some windows. The dead man comes back to life, and we find out a rather disturbing fact in that the man, who was once dead and is now seemingly alive, has wee, little aliens growing inside his body. Oh yes, the man with the alien babies also develops some kind of telepathic link with the alien, who is now hiding out in one of Hollywood's more famously filmed spots, the Bronson Caves, used for, among other things, the scenes from the 60's Batman TV show where the Batmobile came barreling out whenever the characters left the Batcave.
So what happens next? Realizing that their friend and colleague's survival is linked to the alien, do they make nicey nice with the alien? Or do they destroy the abomination? And what about those alien babies? Is a satisfactory conclusion forthcoming? Watch and find out. (Don't hold your breath)
I have to say, I thought the element of the man carrying aliens inside him was interesting, and the subsequent story, although a bit talky, kept me interested. The biggest thing working against this movie was the budget. The space creature was completely funky, looking like giant, sickly sloth with google eyes wearing dirty trash bags. This may have been better received at the time, but now seems like a dusty relic. The movie certainly doesn't hold up to others of the time, but is worth checking out if you enjoy clunky, cheaply made science fiction films of the 50's. The dialogue, as I said, got rather clunky, but the direction seemed to movie things along pretty well, along with a 65 minute running time. Short and sweet, that's the way to make a movie like this. I was just really happy they didn't try to pad things out with a lot of stock footage, as was a common practice with a lot of these low budget features.
The picture quality of the movie on this disc is not all that great, being washed out and showing many flaws and lacking clarity and the audio drops out briefly a couple of times, but I guess that is to be expected. I am not too familiar with Retromedia and their other releases, so I don't know if they try to use the best possible prints or whatever they have on hand. This release seems shoddy, especially for the asking price. The only extra feature is a really poor copy of the trailer for the movie. There is a nice, lengthy piece on the back of the case about the movie, written by someone from a book I never heard of...

Very Little Blood Here..........2003-08-25
Roger Corman does it again! Night Of The Blood Beast is a gooey cheese classic! An astronaut returns to earth, only to crash and burn. Scientists find him dead, yet still warm and without rigor mortis. They take him back to a research station, where a strange beast appears and kills one of them. The dead astronaut "wakes up" and starts acting weird. He is somehow linked to the monster and tells everyone that it means no harm (even though it's already murdered one of 'em). The astronaut decides he needs an x-ray and everyone sees that his body is plum full of alien embryos! The good news is that we do get to see the blood beast itself quite a bit. The bad news is that it looks pretty stupid. The beast tries to tell everyone that it is only here to help us by killing us all and melding our minds with it's own. So, the scientists burn it up in a cave. Will more blood beasts attack in the future? We are left to ponder this deep question. Still, as B movies go, this is at the top of the heap! The musical score is the same as in "Attack Of The Giant Leeches" and "Beast From Haunted Cave". Corman was a good recycler! Best when viewed after 2 am...

It's a John Ashley Shag-A-Thon..........2006-06-07
"Drinking your own blood is the paradigm of recycling." - Gary `Head Injury' Busey "I'm with Busey" (2003)
Producer/Distributor extraordinaire Sam Sherman and Image Entertainment have teamed up to present The Blood Island Vacation package, an awesoma DVD set of four Filipino produced, hemoglobin drenched, drive-in classics at one heck of a nice price...here's what you get...
Brides of Blood (1968)
Directed by Eddie Romero (Mad Doctor of Blood Island, Beast of the Yellow Night), Brides of Blood (1968) and featuring Kent Taylor (The Day Mars Invaded Earth, The Mighty Gorga, Hell's Bloody Devils), former stripper Beverly Hills aka Beverly Powers (Kissin' Cousins, Invasion of the Bee Girls), and John Ashley (Muscle Beach Party, The Eye Creatures, Beast of Blood), the film involves various, mutated creatures terrorizing natives on a place called Blood Island. Extras included are as follows; a short audio commentary track featuring distributor Sam Sherman, an interview with director Eddie Romero, an original Brides of Blood wedding ring giveaway promo, a "House of Terror" live horror show promo, a Beverly Hills pinup gallery, a Blood Island image gallery, liner notes by Jim Arena, a Brides of Blood essay by Christopher William Koenig, and a trailer for this film, along with ones for Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1968), Beast of Blood (1971), Brain of Blood (1972), Blood of the Vampires (1971), The Blood Drinkers (1966), and Raiders of the Living Dead (1986).
Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1968)
Produced and directed by Eddie Romero (Brides of Blood, Beast of the Yellow Night, Beast of Blood), the film stars John Ashley (High School Caesar, Beach Blanket Bingo, Beast of Blood) and Angelique Pettyjohn ("Get Smart", Clambake). Ashley plays a scientist (not the same one from Brides of Blood), who visits Blood Island and finds himself caught up in some nasty business as a deranged scientist on the island is performing hideous experiments involving green blood. Extras include a short audio commentary track featuring distributor Sam Sherman, an interview with director Eddie Romero, an original Mad Doctor of Blood Island `green blood' prologue bit, a "House of Terror" live horror show promo, a still gallery, liner notes by Jim Arena, a Mad Doctor of Blood Island essay by Christopher William Koenig, and a trailer for this film, along with ones for Brides of Blood (1968), Beast of Blood (1971), Brain of Blood (1972), Blood of the Vampires (1971), The Blood Drinkers (1966), and Raiders of the Living Dead (1986).
Beast of Blood (1972)
Produced, co-written, and directed by Eddie Romero (Mad Doctor of Blood Island, Brides of Blood, Beast of the Yellow Night), the film features John Ashley (High School Caesar, Muscle Beach Party, Hell On Wheels) and Celeste Yarnall (The Face of Eve, The Velvet Vampire). Ashley reprises his role from Mad Doctor of Blood Island returning to the island to discover the evil that had thought been destroyed is still thriving. Extras included are as follows; a short audio commentary track featuring distributor Sam Sherman, an interview with director Eddie Romero, an interview w/ Celeste Yarnell conducted by Sam Sherman, a `lost' opening sequence, a "House of Terror" live horror show promo, a still gallery, liner notes by Jim Arena, a Beast of Blood essay by Christopher William Koenig, and a trailer for this film, along with ones for Brides of Blood (1968), Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1968), Brain of Blood (1972), Blood of the Vampires (1971), The Blood Drinkers (1966), Raiders of the Living Dead (1986), and Horror of the Blood Monster (1970).
Brain of Blood (1972)
Co-produced and directed by Al Adamson, the film features Kent Taylor (Brides of Blood, Satan's Sadists), Grant Williams (The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Monolith Monsters), the colossal (7'4") John Bloom (Dracula vs. Frankenstein, Bachelor Party), Regina Carrol (Blood of Ghastly Horror, Doctor Dracula), Vicki Volante (Hell's Bloody Devils, Horror of the Blood Monsters), Reed Hadley (The St. Valentine's Day Massacre), and the diminutive (2'11) Angelo Rossitto (Mesa of Lost Women, Invasion of the Saucer Men, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome), this feature has nothing in terms of relation to the three other films in this set other than the fact they were all distributed by Sam Sherman through his Independent-International Pictures, Inc. film company. This film involves a sickly Middle Eastern dictator arranging to have his brain transplanted to another body, and a certain amount of wackiness ensues... extras included are as follows; a short audio commentary track featuring distributor Sam Sherman, an interview with director Eddie Romero, an interview with Beverly Powers, a "House of Terror" live horror show promo, a Blood Island still gallery, liner notes by Jim Arena, and a trailer for this film, along with ones for Brides of Blood (1968), Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1968), Beast of Blood (1971), Blood of the Vampires (1971), The Blood Drinkers (1966), Raiders of the Living Dead (1986), and Horror of the Blood Monster (1970).
As far as the picture quality on the four DVDs, they're all in full screen (1.33:1) aspect ratio and all look very decent. There are some obvious age elements (white specking, the occasional vertical line), but the colors are bright and sharp, and the overall quality is superior to any VHS copies of the films you may seen in the past. Also, each has audio presented in Dolby Digital mono audio, which also comes through well. As far as the actual films go, I'd rank Brides of Blood and Mad Doctor of Blood Island among the best here, with Beast of Blood following a close 2nd, while Brain of Blood comes in a very distant 3rd. One last note, distributor Sam Sherman does provide audio commentaries on each of the DVDs, but they're not so much specific to the film rather than to an overall history of the films and his experiences, and they don't tend to run the length of the films.

Hoists itself on its own overly artistic petard.......2006-03-26
Not to be confused with 1958's Night of the Blood Beast, Blood of the Beast is a low-budget, independent horror film that dares to be different. The result, in my opinion, is an artistic mish-mash that proves tedious in its over-pursuit of the avant-garde. Not content to develop a unifying vision for the whole, director Georg Koszulinski employs different visual techniques as the movie evolves. I just think he tried too hard, and the resulting lack of consistency diminishes the viewing experience.
The 67-minute film opens up with about ten minutes of stock footage from the two World Wars as the narrator brings us up to speed on the Third World War and the devastating impact it had on humanity. With chemical weapons unleashed by both sides, the resulting draw reduced the globe's human population by a cool three billion souls and left 98% of Earth's surviving males sterile. In order to propagate the species, scientists turned to cloning and seemed to enjoy remarkable success with their efforts. Until, that is, the first strands reached the age of nineteen and a little flaw in their genetic code began turning them into, for lack of a better word, zombies. The film basically centers on two different groups of people. First, we have a trio of teenagers who were out hiking when the first strand mutation kicked in; they don't understand why a stranger ran up and sank his teeth into one guy's arm until they manage to be rescued by some of their friends. This whole group of people ends up running for their lives as the night closes in. On the flip side, we have a father and teenaged daughter holed up in a farmhouse with the Reverend, who has plenty to say on the subject of the unnatural clones and the apocalyptic scenario their creation has now wrought.
The story itself, as you can see, is rather pedestrian (with obvious similarities to Night of the Living Dead). The cinematography, on the other hand, is anything but pedestrian. Whenever anything actually happens to a character, the viewer's senses are bombarded with constantly fleeting images, including plenty of negatives (as in black and white turned inside out), all of it layered with murky visuals and artificial film defects (such as you would see at the start of old-timey film reels) - needless to say, it's very difficult to actually see whatever is taking place on the screen. This lasts up until the last fifteen minutes or so of the film. Those final segments are shot in the style of ye olde silent film, complete with place cards rather than actual dialogue by the actors. Things really turn artsy-fartsy here, with symbology coming to the forefront. We see, for example, a number of shots of cows staring at the camera - personally, I have no idea what that meant, but I can only assume it meant something. I can't help but think Koszulinski must have watched The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari right before filming began, as this final portion of the film seemed quite evocative of early German impressionism. I, frankly, got tired of it before the end. The cinematography as a whole just didn't work for me because the director's efforts in this regard seemed too obvious. Certainly, one must credit Koszulinski for his attempt to present the viewer with something different, but this film just lacks the subtlety to pull the whole thing off. In other words, it looks and feels at all times like a student film. Blood of the Beast is this director's first effort, however. As he further develops his talents and refines his own true vision, Koszulinski has the potential to give us a film that will make him the talk of the town - or, at the very least, the underground.
Don't confuse "quirky" with "great".......2006-01-06
Wow. Three previous reviews... all 5 stars. Hmmm. One reveiwer was in it, and one knows one of the people in it. Can't blame them for wanting the best, but....
Well, it isn't quite that good. Now it's no where near as bad as some of the indie zombie flicks that have come out lately, but we have a long way to go before we hit "great" territory.
It's a nice premise, a cautionary tale about cloning and religion and war. But even allowing for the lack of budget and experience in the cast and crew, there are a few things which really hampered my enjoyment of the film.
First, there is more stock footage used here (mostly of war) then in any movie outside of Ed Wood's collection. The movie is only a little over an hour long, and literally a good quarter of that is stock footage.
Then there are the action scenes. Especially for the first 2/3's of the film, whenever someone is attacked by one of the zombie/clones, the footage rapidly (and I do mean rapidly) jumps between different shots. The cuts are so jarring that it is nearly impossible to get a sense of what is happening. Afterwards, the characters will say something like "Stevie was dragged into the woods!" Well I'm glad they told me that, because I sure didn't see it. Maybe it was done because it's very hard to make a fight scene look realistic, and this effect would cover it up. Or maybe they just thought it looked cool. I didn't.
Finally, with about 15 minutes left, the movie switches to a silent movie format. No dialogue, just people occasionally mouthing words while caption cards appear and distorted music plays. Why? I don't know. It's a seemingly random ploy that comes out of nowhere.
But at least this movie ... tries. Unlike certain other low budget recent releases which I won't name(cough cough "Zombiez" cough "Corpses are Forever" cough). If it didn't try to be so quirky and arbitrary in it's presentation, I might have gone up as high as 3 1/2 stars. Give it a look if you like, just don't expect 5 stars.
BotB.......2005-10-06
I saw this movie with the one of the main characters. Sharon Chudnow is amazing. She is my Drama Teacher/Musical Theatre teacher and I've learned so much from her about theatre. This movie was really good. I thouroughly enjoyed watching it.
Blood of the Beast.......2004-08-13
A remarkable feat. This is an encredible film done by a truely talented writer/director Georg Koszulinski. Set in the future, Georg takes a mininalist approach to film making which grabs you by the gut and creates a feeling of horror without the shock and gratuitous violence often associated with such films.
If you are a film buff or just curious, Blood of the Beast is one film you should not miss.
Warning....do not venture in with the idea that this will be a slick, made to order Hollywood adventure. Rather, set back, relax and enjoy a great film. You will be pleasently surprised
as I was, and looking forward to Georg's next film.
Look for him in the future, Georg is one that will make an even greater name for himself. If I am wrong, then let Blood of the Beast be a lasting memory to the Zombie legacy.
Great Film! Even Greater Director!
I'm in it so I guess I'm a little biased!.......2004-07-28
I was part of the cast and crew of this little gem, and I have never worked so hard or had so much fun as I did working on this movie. If you want to see a truly independent, no-budget film this is it! The reason I worked with Georg and want to work with him again is that I saw what he had done before. And the reason I want to work with him again is because this movie is wonderfully shot and masterfully edited. There is also some fantastic acting. Georg Koszulinski does the festival tour so keep eyes open for his next picture, shot in 16mm.

ALPHA DVD VERSION.......2006-10-30
THIS ONE WASTES NO TIME. WE'RE ONLY MINUTES INTO MAD MONSTER & WE GET TO SEE THE WEREWOLF TRANSFORMATION!!! GEORGE ZUCCO IS OVER THE TOP RAVING MAD IN HIS QUEST TO CREATE AN ARMY OF WEREWOLVES TO BATTLE NAZIS. THOSE WHO SCOFF & RIDICULE HIM ARE MARKED FOR DEATH. GLENN STRANGE PLAYS THE DIM-WIT TURNED WEREWOLF. HE'S GREAT FUN AS BOTH. SOME PRETTY NASTY POVERTY ROW STUFF HERE IN WHICH A CHILD IS MURDERED BY THE WEREWOLF...STILL, ALL IN ALL, THIS IS ONE LOW BUDGET CLASSIC & AN ENJOYABLE ROMP DOWN MONSTER LANE...RECOMMENDED.
THE ALPHA DVD VERSION IS PRETTY POOR THOUGH VISUALLY QUITE CLEAR. THE PROBLEM IS IN THE AUDIO, AN ANNOYING HUMMMM....ON THE SOUNDTRACK THAT DISTRACTS FROM THE OVERALL ENJOYMENT...STILL, FOR THE BARGAIN BASEMENT PRICE I'M GLAD I BOUGHT THIS GEM. IT'S MY FAVORITE ZUCCO PERFORMANCE & FOR THAT ALONE A MUST!!!
Silly Fun.......2005-10-23
If you're a fan of the sillier monster movies that Universal cranked out during the '40s, you'll probably enjoy this. I'm not sure what studio released it, as I got the Alpha Video edition, which doesn't provide that info. But it was released in 1942, and very obviously a cash-in on the previous year's "Wolf Man".
Here's the skinny: The makeup is very silly, but you do get the chance to see a werewolf in overalls, just like you've always dreamed. The acting is, in my opinion, rather charmingly bad. The misty swampland setting provides for some nice atmosphere. And the ending is pretty exciting.
Also, we get the chance to see two of the more recognizable faces from the latter days of Universal's classic monster movie cycle: Glenn Strange in a non-Frankenstein, speaking role (the first I've seen), and George Zucco, who played the obligatory "high priest of Arkam" in a couple of the "Mummy" sequels. Zucco is a pretty perfunctory mad scientist here, but Strange, although no Lawrence Olivier, is likeable as the hulking halfwit subjected to Zucco's werewolf experiments.
As for the Alpha DVD, it's just this side of "watchable"--something I can't say for some other Alpha releases I've seen. Alpha is always a crapshoot, but at six bucks a pop, sometimes I can't resist. Critically speaking, the movie looks about as good as it deserves to. But speaking as a lifelong lover of silly monster movies from the '40s, "The Mad Monster" is a fun surprise.
One more thing: The dialogue during the first reel is a little low. I'm guessing this is the movie's bad and not Alpha's. It does become clearer for the rest of the movie.
Coyote Ugly..........2005-04-07
Dr. Cameron (George Zucco) is a scientist experimenting on his handyman, Petro (Glenn "don't call me Lon" Strange), by injecting him with a serum that turns him into a ravenous werewolf by night! Cameron's been using wolf's blood (which is funny since the animal in the laboratory cage is clearly a coyote) to make his serum. Petro thinks he's been doing some harmless sleepwalking, when all along he's been on a murderous rampage! You see, he's Dr. Cameron's test subject, to both convince and slaughter the other scientists who mocked his revolutionary idea of creating an army of werewolves (!) to help in the war effort. Strange does his best to keep his dignity intact under the poofy wig and dime-store make-up he's forced to wear. MAD MONSTER is certainly not a classic wolfman movie, but it's worth a look or two...
Don't Buy This DVD - There Is A Glitch!.......2002-07-26
Please don't buy this DVD as at 8:32 into the movie the disc freezes. The only way to get past it is to skip to the next chapter and rewind to that point. Fast-forward will do no good, as it's doesn't work. I had two copies sent and they were both the same.
By the way: The quality of the print is just awful.
To be clear I want to explain that I'm talking about the more expensive Ventura Distribution edition. I doubt the less expensive disc freezes, but would bet the quality is even worse (if that's possible).
If you buy it after reading this warning, remember I tried to say you some annoyance and you just didn't listen.
