With laughs and gross-outs aplenty, Slither is the best horror comedy since Shaun of the Dead. Having written for the jubilant trash-mongers at Troma Films before scripting 2004's well-received remake of Dawn of the Dead, writer-director James Gunn crafted this hilarious splatter-fest as an homage to the comically violent horror films of the 1970s and '80s, and he gets it just right with a low-budget look, perfect casting, grisly make-up effects and judicious use of CGI gore. The story's a deliberate monster-mash, borrowing from a dozen other movies with its plot about an invasion of slithery slug-like parasites from outer space, arriving (via meteorite) in the redneck town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, where they turn most of the local yokels into flesh-eating zombies. The first victim (played by Michael Rooker) turns into a squid-like, multi-tentacled host monster (kill him and you kill 'em all), and his terrified wife (Elizabeth Banks) teams up with Wheelsy's sheriff (Nathan Fillion, from Firefly and Serenity) and mayor (comedic scene-stealer Gregg Henry) to eradicate the alien threat before Wheelsy turns into Slugville. Gunn handles comedy and horror with exuberant flair, and Slither's greatest strength is that it never aspires to be anything more than it is: 96 minutes of good laughs and gruesomeness, served up with the kind of gleeful abandon that only true horror buffs can fully appreciate.--Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A funny scary movie!.......2007-06-27

If your a scary movie person like me you will get a kick out of this movie. It is so scary at times and predictable that it gives you a laugh! Definitely would recommend it if you are watching it with friends! Bring the popcorn but be careful... it will end up on the floor and in between the couch.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, bloody, and fun..........2007-05-23

Having grown up with such gems as Invaders from Mars (NOT!) Night of the Comet (Again, NOT!) and a whole host of Nightmare on Elmstreets and Friday the 13ths, I found this movie to be a breath of fresh air. Along the lines of such cult classics as The Toxic Avenger and Nuke 'em High, this film is fun and funny.

The cast is great. Unlike so many movies, horror and otherwise, they seemed natural, and not like a bunch of people acting like other people. Nathan Fillion is one of the rare actors who seems to be this way in everything he does, and it's such a pleasure to watch, from Firefly to Slither. The director, Mr. Gunn seems to be really good with people who can work this way, and I say Kudos!

Not for young kids, and not for people who prefer nothing but hack & slash gore. It's a pretty good story, well done on the visual effects and creature creation, only, they forgot the slime trails....tsk, tsk... But overall, a pleasure to have in my collection.

I would highly recommend this to other people, like me, who have squeamish friends who stay too long.... and besides, you cna watch it over and over and catch some of the in jokes.

4 out of 5 stars I'll order my steak well done from now on.......2007-05-21

Actually, forget about eating meat, I'll just have a salad. This has got to be the most absurd, gross-out, need multiple barf bags film of all time. It's also funny enough not to take too seriously, so it was very entertaining. Just don't watch it right before dinner.
Some slimy alien thingy hitches a ride to Earth on a fallen meteor. It's not really interested in coexisting peacefully with the human race, instead it prefers more of the whole parasitic takeover deal with rampant chaos and destruction. This infection doesn't waste any time spreading throughout the town, the effects are pretty twisted.
Like when one lady's body inflates to the size of a hot air balloon, she exclaims "something's wrong with me!" She looks 10times worse than Veruca Salt at the Wonka chocolate factory.
This movie is over-filled with other slimy grotesque moments with blood and puss and unspeakable filth that goes WAAAAY over the top. You gotta love it!

3 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!.......2007-05-21

This movie was a hilarious parody of the horror genre. The use of effects, over the top acting, everything, combined to make it silly, but very watchable, adventure. It was gross, violent, odd, and probably not worth repeated viewing. But it was fun, and well worth seeing once!

2 out of 5 stars A real no-brainer: this movie's pretty bad........2006-12-24

I guess you really have to be into B movies in order to "appreciate" this sort of a production, because I found it to be quite bad. It strikes me as odd that for much of the movie the brain(s) are the product of double-exposure trickery, but then for the end scene the actual model is utilized. Why not use them all the time and use skillful editting and camera angles when it comes to the brains entering/exiting bodies? As if this wasn't bad enough, the two scenes when the airplanes are blown up are outright silly. I mean, how many airplanes have one of their wings dangling as if from a string and swaying from side to side after blowing up in mid-air?!?! I'm sure that with a minimal amount of extra effort and money something more convincing could have been devised. Although a movie with such a lame premise would invariably be a stinker, this movie could have been a little better than it turned out. Still mildly entertaining due to some of the unintended humour the poor production quality of this movie illicits.

5 out of 5 stars more like, "the brain from planet 'aroused'"!.......2006-10-09

A winner of a B movie with a great campy story, a pair of floating disembowled brains and enough reused footage to extend the running time to a whole 71 minutes! Our Story: a bad-boy brain crashes to earth and lures a world famous nuclear physicist and his strangely cute boy-pal out to a remote cave by blasting doses of radiation in his general direction. Everyone knows that excessive radiation is a sure-fired way to get the nuclear physicists running! The glowing-eyed brain croaks the boy-pal and inhabits the physicist, who then returns home to lunge at his pure-as-the-driven-snow fiancee. Man alive, the brain enjoys those sensations! He is here to take over the world in order to enslave the humans, in order to attack his own planet, in order to rule the universe! And he promises to take the girl along with him! "How about some lunch," she demurrs! OK so the good sheriff brain floats in and occupies the dog. Makes total sense. Somehow, the bad-boy brain gains enough matter to be whacked on the head and killed (despite that fact that many books and statuettes are launched through him during the course of the movie). Everything is OK and we assume that someone will tell the general and the Russians and all the rest who are frantically gathering up all their radioactive material to send it to Los Alamos. The good brain does not stick around to explain things to the authorities so one assumes that all the parties involved (dad, the fiancees) are thrown in jail for murdering the boy-pal and the old man sheriff who accidently wandered in while our hero was possessed by the bad brain. And they're probably fingered for the airplanes, and the nuclear explosion too.
Rollicking good fun! Recommended

4 out of 5 stars John Agar Having His Mind Possessed In Fun 1950's Sci Fi Tale.......2006-09-14

I just love all the science fiction efforts from the 1950's. They always seem to have a real energy about them that often even makes the most absurd goings on enjoyable. The themes of these films generally dealt with the world being invaded by evil aliens intent upon destroying mankind, or having various capital cities being leveled by over sized creatures awakened by man's careless atomic testing. This little effort "The Brain From Plant Arous", was a title which until recently was strangely unfamiliar to me. Starring one of my favourite 1950's sci fi actors in John Agar it tells a slightly different tale of an evil brain (!) that travels from the Planet Arous and possesses the mind of brilliant young scientist Agar and using his body seeks to conquer the world by destroying anyone or anything that stands in its way. Despite the way out plot idea and the hilarious brain floating in mid air in many scenes I actually found the premise of this story quite an interesting one and despite the limitations of John Agar's acting style he did well in the part of the inquisitive scientist who goes through the torment of having his mind and body taken over by an evil alien force intent upon destruction. Undoubtedly this story about evil brains taking over a man's body will never be in the same class as classics from this decade such as the original "War of the Worlds", or "The Day the Earth Stood Still", however the cast do treat the material with great respect and manage to keep a real seriousness in the proceedings that makes it especially enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars "Camp" at it's best!.......2005-09-30

Talk about your super cheesy, low budget horror movie! This one is great and John Agar gained a cult following for his work in it and "Attack of the Mole People". Breal out the popcorn and cold refreshments and enjoy this one!

3 out of 5 stars I'll Take This "B" Movie Over A Coma Anyday.......2005-09-19

I've seen hundreds of Sci Fi/Horror movies over the years. This is one of those you'll wonder whether you've watched it or not a few years down the road. You just can't remember.

All in all, I figure it's still better to watch a so-so Sci Fi/Horror movie than "Dances With Wolves" or "Evita". This movie will end up being non-memorable, but it's preferable to being in a coma.

1 out of 5 stars "I'm telling you, it's getting so a fella can't get away from the G*****n sickies no more.".......2005-11-20

Last night I had the horrible misfortune to see the 1982 snoozer PARASITE starring the husky voiced Demi Moore versus a slimy otter-sized worm thing that's running around her small desert town occasionally biting people. Imagine how exciting this story could have been...now replace all the exciting parts with boring parts and you still have a story better than the one presented here.

Let the misery end with me, I've thrown myself to the mercy of the bad movie gods (and lost) so please don't let my sacrifice be in vain - stay away from this movie.

D: Charles Band (THE CREEPS, THE ALCHEMIST)

Dr. Paul Dean - Robert Glaudini (CUTTING CLASS, THE ALCHEMIST)
Patricia Welles - Demi Moore (BLAME IT ON RIO, STRIPTEASE)
Ricus - Luca Bercovici (FRIGHTMARE, SCANNER COP)

2 out of 5 stars I got a beast in my belly...pass the Pepto-Bismol..........2005-09-23

I knew I was in trouble last night shortly after the credits began rolling for the film Parasite (1982) as the name Charles Band came up, not only as producer, but also as the director. If you're not familiar with the name, know that he's the man behind such cinematic atrocities like Laserblast (1978), The Day Time Ended (1980), Robot Holocaust (1986), and Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death (1989)...that's not to say every one of his cinematic ventures stink on ice, as when you churn out as many crummy films as he does, you're bound to get lucky once in awhile...but that's not the case here. Starring in the film is Robert `Who?' Glaudini (Wavelength, The Alchemist) and a young Demi `It's pronounced dem-EE, you fool' Moore (St. Elmo's Fire, One Crazy Summer, G.I. Jane), in her first starring role (her first actual role was in a 1981 made for TV feature titled Choices). Also appearing is Luca Bercovici (Rockula, Scanner Cop), Al Fann (Curse II: The Bite), one time member of the jailbait girl band The Runaways turned actress Cherie Currie (Foxes, Twilight Zone: The Movie), Tom Villard (One Crazy Summer, Heartbreak Ridge), Miss Vivian Blaine (Guys and Dolls), James Davidson (The Mechanic), and B movie favorite Cheryl `Rainbeaux' Smith (Caged Heat, Revenge of the Cheerleaders, Vice Squad), in a minor, but certainly revealing role...

After a really awkward opening sequence, one that, I think, tried to set up how a scientist named Paul Dean (Glaudini) accidentally infected himself with a parasitic organism and escaped from a secure facility, we see him driving around in a van, stopping at an abandoned work camp, encountered some violent, mutated types. He manages to fight them off (in a slow motion fight sequence) and then leave, making me wonder what the hell was the point of the past ten minutes of footage...now is probably a good time to mention the story is supposed to take place after some sort of apocalyptic, nuclear event, and atomic fallout has ravaged the major cities. Anyway, Dean boogies on down the road and eventually arrives at a small town, rents a room in a flophouse run by an old woman named Maggie (Blaine), who informs Dean that, while she doesn't clean up the rooms, she would participate in helping to mess them up, if you know what I mean...file this under `things that make you go blecch'. All right, so here's the deal...Dean created these parasitic organisms for some mysterious corporation/gooberment agency (Why? Who knows? It's never explained), realized the dangers, destroyed the all the creatures but two, one of which is in a silver container he has with him, and the other actually inside his belly. Now he's trying desperately to figure out how to kill them before it's too late, as the more they eat, the bigger they get, and then the hungrier they become...some local punks, led by a dink named Ricus (Bercovici), cause trouble and steal the container housing the specimen, which they let loose upon opening (they thought valuable goodies be inside)...Paul finds refuge with the local goodie goodie named Patricia (Moore) who helps him for no good reason, but may regret her assistance as Paul is being pursued by a ruthless corporate agent named Wolf, who drives a sweet, black Lamborghini Countach (complete with flip up doors), carries a wicked laser wand, and is intent on recovery what was stolen, no matter the cost...

Was Parasite, touted as "The First Futuristic Monster Movie in 3-D", the beginning of the short lived 3-D fad of the early 80s, one that brought us such craptastic features like Jaws 3-D (1983), Friday the 13th Part 3: 3D (1982), Amityville 3-D (1983), and Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983)? Most likely...actually, the film did pretty well, costing well under half a million and raking in around seven million, probably mostly due to the novelty of the stereoscopic aspect (it sure wasn't the stellar story or amazing performances that drew audiences). Sadly, that element didn't carry over onto the DVD release, so what we're left with are a lot of scenes where things are flying towards the camera for no apparent reason. The story is fairly haphazard, and limps along hobbled by unnecessary plot points, like the bit about those populating the story are the remnants of post apocalyptic event. The only good reason I could discern for the inclusion of this was it being a way to explain why there are so few actual people in the film, which, in reality, was probably due to a limited budget. Ultimately it could have been left out (along with a number of other things), and the story would have been just as good (good, in this case meaning rotten). I'm unsure what prompted those involved to cast Robert Glaudini as the lead, as he was hardly hero material, feeling like secondary character at best here, one who would be killed off well before the movie ended. Overall the acting is pretty crummy, but this is more due to deficiencies within the script rather than poor performers, in my opinion. In one scene where Patricia rescues Dean, she's trying to get him to talk, but he's tight lipped, and she issues the following bit of nonsense..."You don't talk much. Maybe a little rattlesnake tea will loosen your tongue a little." Who in the world talks like that? It's not an overly awkward bit of dialogue, but just enough to create a niggling sense of annoyance of having to listen to it...and the film is littered with clunky stuff like this...and get this, the movie had three, count `em, three writers. I did like the make-up effects featured on the people eventually consumed by the parasite, as it was somewhat gruesome, but the parasites themselves, created by Stan Winston, looked odd, like slimy, wriggling, pulsating ten-pound sacks of mud with huge mouths and lots of razor sharp teeth. We actually don't see a whole lot of them, but when we do, the sequences are memorable and even gory. I think my favorite bit happened after the gang of youths stole the container Dean was keep the specimen in, thinking it stored something of value, and the one punk opens it up to see what's inside. Now, any normal person would have probably dumped the contents out on the floor, but this genius sticks his hand inside the darkness of the container and sez "There's something wet in here." As you can imagine, he gets what he deserves...all in all I think this could have been a better feature, had it not been hamstrung with such poor writing, which is a lot more noticeable sans the 3-D effects of the original release.

Anchor Bay Entertainment provides a decent wide screen (the aspect ratio is listed as 2.00:1 on the DVD case), enhanced for 16X9 TVs, picture on this DVD, but since the film was originally presented in 3-D, there's a noticeable grainy quality through while watching the movie in regular old 2-D, which bothered me a little at first, until I got used to it...as far as the audio, there's two options one being Dolby Surround 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0. Special features include a theatrical trailer, touting the movie's amazing stereoscopic process, along with interesting liner notes by Fangoria writer Michael Gingold, and a 5X7 reproduction of original poster art, both contained on a DVD insert.

Cookieman108

By the way, if you're interested in buying this DVD, I'd suggest doing what I did and buying the Anchor Bay DVD Fright Pack: Man's Worst Friends, which features six films including Parasite (1982), Lucio Fulci's The Black Cat (1989), Slugs: The Movie (1988), Bruno Mattei's Rats: Night of Terror (1984), Zoltan, Hound of Dracula (1978), and Dario Argento's The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971). It's available here on the Amazon website, at a really good price, and cheaper than buying the individual releases.

3 out of 5 stars Cheesy, oh so cheesy!.......2004-01-08

You would think Demi Moore's first film, the aptly titled "Parasite," would attract more attention from moviegoers. Actually, I accidentally saw a few minutes of Moore on one of those late night talk shows recently and the host "surprised" her with about thirty seconds of cheesy footage from this 1982 film. The actress took it all in good stride, giggling and squirming over her histrionic performance in the film. After having seen "Parasite" in its entirety, I would have to say Moore is one of the bright spots in the movie, a painful admission for me considering my dislike for most of this actress's work. What can you expect from a Charles Band film, though? Yep, the producer of such shlocky pap as "Laserblast," "Puppet Master," and "Blood Dolls" is the driving force behind "Parasite." As serious horror fans know, Band worked under the Empire Pictures label before starting Full Moon Productions several years later. Low budget cheese lovers have learned to adore many of Band's inept pictures; but then again, how can you ignore a guy who consistently used puppets, dolls, or midgets in his films. Band has some sort of fixation for miniatures, a mania put to good use here with the cheesy looking parasite thingies.

Set in the future world of 1992, "Parasite" tells the story of the hapless Doctor Paul Dean. Dean worked for the merchants, or minions of ruthless corporations whose goal is to turn the population of the United States into slaves. The doctor, who wrote a book on parasites, created a vicious type of organism for the merchants. Why? Who knows, but in the course of his work Dean becomes infected with one of these grotesque organisms and runs away from the merchants in order to seek a cure before it kills him. He heads to the small town of Joshua, located out in the desert, where he runs into a gang of miscreants led by an escaped merchant slave, an elderly hotel owner with a penchant for pancake makeup and huge wigs, a cranky gas station owner, a restaurant proprietor with a huge scar on his face, and Demi Moore. Moore, who of course will become the heroine of the film, grows lemons on a little farm outside of town. No one in town is particularly friendly to outsiders, especially one in as shaky and sweaty of a condition as the shambling Dean. The doctor knows he must work quickly if he is to kill the parasite before the merchants locate him and bring him back to the city.

But wouldn't you know it? Dean keeps another parasite in a metal container that the town thugs promptly steal and release with disastrous consequences. The parasite is a nasty looking creature, long and rubbery with huge teeth. The creature attaches itself to a person and proceeds to feed upon the victim until they turn into a shriveled up husk and die. Fortunately for Dean, the one residing in his abdomen is in hibernation due to periodic injections of some strange fluid. The doctor is the fortunate one since those unlucky enough to encounter the other parasite die in extraordinarily gruesome ways. Think John Hurt in "Alien," with the creature bursting out of stomachs and faces with the concomitant spray of saucy effects. The gore, more than any other element of "Parasite," helps move the film along.

We never learn just what went on in the outside world to bring about such an unfortunate series of events. One of the characters mentions in passing that he left New York City when the atomic debris raining out of the sky began killing people. We also notice that gasoline costs roughly fifty dollars a gallon, silver rather than paper currency is the only acceptable mode of exchange, and merchants carry around some cheesy looking laser wand that can cut off people's hands with seeming ease. Merchants also drive really nice Ferrari type cars with nifty doors that open upwards rather than outwards. It figures the corporate types would get all the perks in the future. The merchant who comes for Dean is a rough sort, a guy clad in a three piece suit who thinks little of slapping poor Demi around in order to get information. We learn from Dean that this is the guy who acted as liaison between the corporations and the government in the parasite program. The summary of the film sounds impressive, but almost nothing seems to happen in this movie. I had little idea what was going on until roughly forty-five minutes into the picture.

I kept thinking about Band's film "Laserblast" as I watched "Parasite." The two films share similar locales, both have a mysterious figure showing up and asking a lot of questions (the merchant here and a government agent in "Laserblast"), and both have some nice slow motion violence. In "Laserblast," we saw a lot of hilarious car explosions and fires from numerous camera angles. Regrettably, we don't see nearly enough of this type of action in "Parasite." Granted, we do get a funny slow motion fistfight scene in the beginning, along with a guy on fire towards the end, but no cars blow up here (probably due to a sluggish car market caused by the apocalypse). One thing we do get from this film is much better performances from the cast. All the actors do an acceptable, if occasionally goofy, job playing their parts. Moore stands out, not surprisingly, and even strikes a pose eerily reminiscent of her teary scene at the end of "Ghost" eight years later. "Parasite" is a worthwhile film for cheese lovers, although Moore fans might wish to avoid it and watch instead some of her (supposedly) worthier projects.

4 out of 5 stars parasite.......1999-11-23

Parasite is an awsome movie with one of the very best "face explosion" scenes ever. this movie doesn't drag and is a definite "sleeper" cult movie. plenty of gore and supprise as the monsters change as they grow leaving the viewer in the dark as to what's going to happen next. I wish they'd put this out on vhs.

2 out of 5 stars flat and cropped presentation of widescreen 3-D movie.......1999-10-30

This was released to theatres in 1982 in full color polarized 3-D and widescreen (using the clear grey glasses) and on a low budget level was kind of fun. It is interesting today as it was Demi Moore's first film. I bet she leaves it off her resume these days. This DVD is presented flat and the widescreen image is cropped to fit the TV screen. I think they should have released it letterboxed at least. The 3-D is the main reason to watch the film anyway, so this DVD isn't really worth owning in my opinion. Better to search out the 3-D widescreen tapes that are out there (unofficially?)

Parasite Dolls is set in the future world of the popular Bubblegum Crisis continuity, but the Knight Sabers aren't involved. Buzz Nikvest, an officer in the undercover Branch division of the AD Police, links the stories in this three-part OVA. In each episode, android robots or Boomers are the victims of violent crimes. In "Faint Voice," cyber-voyeurs tap into the perceptions of destructive robots; the mysterious "Crusher" targets Boomer prostitutes in "Dreams"; and a deranged politician conducts a clandestine war against all Boomers in "Roundtable." Parasite Dolls is closer in tone to Mamoru Ishii's feature Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence than the original Bubblegum Crisis, and some viewers may find the graphic violence off-putting. But director Naoyuki Yoshinaga presents these noir tales of dystopia with skill and visual imagination. (Rated 17 and older: violence, violence against women, nudity, sexual situations, grotesque imagery, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Description

In a world where perfect androids called boomers have infiltrated every aspect of society, it's the job of the Branch to maintain peace between the people and the plastic. Unfortunately, not all boomers are created perfect and when boomers go bad, people die!

4 out of 5 stars A Dark Diversion in the Bubblegum Crisis World.......2006-03-26

Bubblegum Crisis and its many spin-offs has long ago become one of cyberpunk's leading anime. It has everything that most fans of this genre enjoy, including a dark metropolitan world heavily influenced by science, techno-music, and generally mature themes. Parasite Dolls is just that, a spin-off of a cyberpunk classic. Though in this, the ladies of Bubblegum Crisis do not make an appearance, it does follow the other important rogue boomer fighters, which are the AD Police.

The story in Parasite Dolls follows a small group of secret AD Police officers known as the Branch, who investigate the more mysterious aspects of rogue boomer crimes. Leading this group is Buzz Nikvest, a man with a haunted past but with obvious talent. With his boomer partner Kimball, the head-strong Reiko Michaelson, the Genom spy Angel, and the computer specialist Bill Myers, Buzz does everything in his power to solve boomer crimes.

Parasite Dolls is an OVA separated into three stories, and though they all follow the branch, none of the cases they solve in each episode is ever the same. It makes it a bit jarring, but not overly so. You just have to adjust to the new time frame and the new mysteries. In episode one they must stop rogue boomers that rise up during a radio show on Friday nights; episode two they must stop a boomer crusher that targets prostitute boomers, despite the fact that using boomers for prostitution is illegal; and in episode three, they must attempt to stop a powerful leader as he tries to destroy all the boomers in Genom City.

Unlike the much lighter Bubblegum Crisis 2032-33, and the teen-aimed Tokyo 2040, Parasite Dolls is not for children. It deals with some dark things, including prostitution, murder, and terrorism. Nudity and blood and gore are mainstays in every episode, and there are some soft-core sex scenes that add to the maturity of this anime. The DVD recommends 17+, and I must agree. But, if you're of age and love the BG world, then this is a solid addition to that line. Maybe a little empty without Priss and the girls, but fun nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Tales of Mechanical Flesh.......2005-03-28

Parasite Dolls is a set of three episodes set in the same Mega-Tokyo that has played home for Bubblegum Crisis and the AD Police. There 'boomers,' humanoid robots, are much of the workforce, driving the trucks, doing the hard word, and even being surrogate partners and playthings. It is a divided world, some becoming dependent on the robots and some hating them for their imitation of life.

Boomers don't always stick to their original programming. The first episode tells of several that came from the Genom Corporation robot plants with a deadly flaw. And an effort to correct them that is just as deadly. The second is about a monster set loose among the sex dolls to work revenge. Once again the cure is worse than the crime.

This imbalance comes to a head in the final episode, where crazed politicians play on the fears of the anti-robot fashion to trigger and apocalyptic ending. While the other episodes are cynical, this story is genuinely nourish, leaving the viewer unsure if there is any hope for the future.

Mega-Tokyo stories, which are often bleak, focus more on violence and action rather than narrative. As such the atmosphere is often seems as artificial as the boomers. Sort of a mechanical version of the 30's, set 100 or so years in the future. This goes for artwork as well as acting. This has become a style of its own, and Parasite Dolls is a perfect example of this eerie anime noir.

3 out of 5 stars You need another $20 already?!?.......2004-10-22

The animation focuses mostly on detailed facial expressions which is cool and different. There is a lot of back-story, however, which leads to a lot of conversational scenes where action is limited.

Also, as my title reflects, there are only three eps on the disc. I've been bummed before when getting four eps instead of five on discs and held my tongue. Three is just not enough. Either give some REALLY sweet extras or put more eps on the disc or lower the price.

Finally, ep3 has one of,if not THE, most grotesque scene I've ever witnessed in anime or any other media. (read S&M snuff-scene). To each his own, and I'm no prude, but this one was out there.

What the heck, though...it's only a cartoon , right?...and she was just a Boomer after all, right?

2 out of 5 stars How to make a bad movie................2006-01-04

I dont see too much originality here, seems the story is borrowed
from multiple of other movies.
1. Boring script
2. Very Boring actors/actresses
3. Creature looks good, but its always in the dark and too many
quick shots, could have been lot better.
4. Too much crawling around air ducts...what a waste of film.
I cant even recommend this one for a viewing....maybe after a keg
of beer it might look good.

1 out of 5 stars Amazingly Bad.......2005-07-25

An oil company has run afoul of a environmentalist group. They step up testing on a new agent for cleaning decommissioned oil rigs and facilities. But due to some mix up, too much cleaner is used and a nasty bit of wildlife mutates into a fast-breeding killer.

This is really bad and completely lacking in continuity. The crack cleaning team includes a drunk and a worker who sleeps too much. After the boss yells at the drunk for lack of professionalism, the boss falls asleep in the radio room. An entire oil rig is to be cleaned with sprayers and about five gallons of cleaner. The team includes a new guy but they have been all working together. There are an awful lot of working lights whenever there is no power. The dial on the main generator says it puts out 25 volts. For no reason at all the drunk climbs into an air shaft to get a drink. Once it is known that the creatures move through the ducts, people decide to take refuge in them. One guy is afraid they won't make it off the rig and hides, he has the keys to get off but no one tells him this. The environmentalists arrived on an outboard raft but there is no way off the rig (where did the raft go?). There is reference to another rig with similar trouble but it would not have had the cleaner. One character calls them parasites but they exhibit no parasitic behavior. Terrorist spend a lot of time downloading a laptop that is not connected to anything (why didn't they just take it?). The gratuitous nude scene involves a woman taking a shower with a man she hates. And on and on and on.

The effects are terrible. The creatures look like flat computer game monsters most of the time. We don't know what they are or where they came from. The acting is really bad and the sets look nothing like an oil rig (probably a studio boiler room). The rig is made up entirely of flammable materials except where it crumbles like wet sand. I can really see no reason for this film to exist or to be watched.

3 out of 5 stars SLUGFEST.......2004-08-16

PARASITE is one of those CGI effects laden movies that doesn't really meet our standards. However, for some schlock thrills and some bad acting, it manages to be one of those okay "B" movies.
The monsters themselves look like slugs with teeth, and most of the time, one can tell they're not anywhere near real. The claustrophobic oil rig setting helps with atmosphere and there are some intense scenes. The acting on the whole is barely adequate, no one in particular standing out. The direction is pedestrian, but Andrew Prendergast keeps the action moving well, after a sluggish (no pun intended) start.
Not bad, but I'd rent and not buy.

1 out of 5 stars NO STARS FOR THIS DISASTER.......2005-09-19

SUBHUMAN has to be one of the stupidest horror films in recent history. Filmed on less than a shoestring budget, this disastrous film makes little or no sense, has ridiculously inept acting and special effects. Writer Mark Tuit must have consulted every dimestore philosophy book he could so that he could use these euphuisms in abundance, making absolutely no sense and contributing nothing to the storyline. No explanation for the cause of these "vampires," or the "vampire hunter." Credit William McDonald for trying to act like he was in a classy movie, but chalk this one up as one of the worst you will have the misfortune to stumble upon.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh..........2005-06-01

The majority of the reviews here are the correct ones. Awkward story telling, bad acting (with the exception of the main guy, MacDonald - a stand out amongst the rest of the poor cast) The reviewer below is correct: The rest of the cast ARE people to look out for - look out for them on C Movies for the rest of their careers...blech...

3 out of 5 stars Don't listen to others views...check it out for yourself.......2005-05-03

I just want to say that Subhuman is a good film. I read up on this and it's amazing what these guys did for a low-no budget film. I take my hats off to these guys for doing it. As far as riping off Blade..not even close...two totaly different films. Mark Tuit is a smart writer, he accomplishes telling a story that makes sense and keeps you interested through out the film...it's deffinintly not your typical horror film it has more depth to it. Then just slicing off heads. Canadain veteran actor William MacDonald shines as Martin and newcomer Bryce McLaughlin is deffinatly someone to watch out for. Those who don't have expectations when watching a film and just love the enjoyment of what movie are made for....entertainment. Will really enjoy the film...Good going guys and gals.

1 out of 5 stars 4 stars???? are you high? want some wine with that?.......2005-04-26

This is basically a really bad vampire hunter movie. It is sort of like Blade, but to compare it (or contrast it) to Blade in the same sentence is an insult to blade, and the whole horror movie industry. This movie is really bad. The picture qaulity looks like a home video, but even worse than that(adult movie qaulity if you will). It has a grainy picture. It has really bad actors and actresses. It has some of the worst special effects I have seen in awhile. Like rubber arms and rubber heads. It has really generic blood. I honestly could not sit through this movie. I stopped it about half way. I started to skim through it because when it wasn't generic and cheesy, it was just plain boring. Stay away! Oh and this other reviewer: X-RaySpex "X-Ray" guy needs to put down the pipe. He is either severely handicap, or he had something to do with the making of this dumb movie, this isn't even close to 4 stars.

This is definitley a cut above most lower-budget direct-to-rental horror films. I found "SubHuman" to be a cool film with a strong performance by William Macdonald.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well written and suspenseful.......2002-03-20

I was very happy to find this 1995 independent horror flick shot in Tucson, Arizona to be excellent, well-written, and suspenseful. _Parasite_ is an expertly knit albeit virtually unknown feature concerning Mesmerism gone awry. While nasty occurrences abound, the film relies more on plot than on gore.

David Gaffney plays Richard, a college science professor and professional skeptic. When he meets Miss Vohich (Julie Matias), a woman whose cane and limp belie her strong powers of suggestion, the demonstration she puts on of her abilities provokes and startles him out of his dogmaticism. He eagerly enters into a series of experiments with her that threaten to ruin his life. His students, fellow professors, and even his fiance (played by Marissa Hall) become perplexed by the increasingly distant, bizarre behavior of Richard, as it is slowly revealed Miss Vohich possesses powers even beyond her normal ones of Mesmerism.

Being a student of the works of the philosophers Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, I found the likening in the film of the demand of a personal human will (in this case, another person's will) with a parasite not entirely implausible. In more than one sense, whether psychological or spiritual or both, we all live by either affirming or denying our wills-- thus life can indeed be viewed in a Darwinist way as a war of weak against strong wills, and vice-versa. The film forsakes a true commentary on the questions it raises, but what is left for the viewer is still thought provoking.

This is fertile ground that the film trods well-- I am reminded that Freud, before founding Psychoanalysis, was a follower of Charcot, who practiced using suggestion as a therapy for hysteria. Weaving together Mesmerism, scientific enquiry, telepathy and the Supernatural, this is a thinking man's horror film that still packs a good dose of fun along the way.
