What can I say about this movie...Don't do it people, just don't do it.
Buy it that is. If you have to see it, borrow it if a friend has it, but don't pay good money for it. The first Pumpkinhead was I believe a good story, not great, but enjoyable nonetheless. This, this was just...Words fail me. Need I say more!

5 out of 5 stars underated movie.......2007-02-04

i dont know why people hate this movie so much. i think its a pretty good movie and it has some cool special effects.

1 out of 5 stars Pumpkinhead? I think not........2007-01-29

Being a big fan of the original, I watched this movie expecting what the title promised: A sequel. Instead I got a movie with bad acting and a plot that had absolutely nothing to do with the original. There are a few good death scenes in this film, but the cheesy ending ruins whatever saving power those deaths would have had. Do yourself a favor and skip straight to the third installment.

5 out of 5 stars nice sequal.......2007-01-01

great sequal to an awesome horror picture. Absolute gore fest, with a cool story, how can you go wrong?!?!

3 out of 5 stars What did you expect?.......2006-02-24

It's a horror movie and it's good for its genre, it's all about the creature.

Even a man who is pure in heart,
And says his prayers by night,
May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
And the autumn moon is bright.

If you haven't heard this piece of horror-movie doggerel before, you'll never forget it after seeing The Wolf Man for two reasons: it's a spooky piece of rhyme and nearly everybody in the picture recites it at one time or another. Set in a fog-bound studio-built Wales, The Wolf Man tells the doom-laden tale of Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.), who returns to the estate of his wealthy father (Claude Rains). (Yes, Chaney's American, but the movie explains this, awkwardly.) Bitten by a werewolf, Talbot suffers the classic fate of the victims of lycanthropy: at the full moon, he turns into a werewolf, a transformation ingeniously devised by makeup maestro Jack Pierce. Pierce was the man who turned Boris Karloff into the Frankenstein monster, and his werewolf makeup became equally famous, with its canine snout and bushy hairdo--and, of course, seriously sharp dental work. The Wolf Man was a smash hit, giving Universal Pictures a new monster for their already crowded stable, and Chaney found himself following in the footsteps (or paw prints) of his father, who had essayed a monster or two in the silent era. This is a classy horror outing, with strong atmosphere and a thoughtful script by Curt Siodmak--well, except for the stiff romantic bits between Chaney and Evelyn Ankers. It's also got Bela Lugosi (briefly) and Maria Ouspenskaya, the prunelike Russian actress who foretells doom like nobody's business. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Horror Film.......2007-04-20

Made during the horror movie heyday of the late 1930s and early 1940s, this classic suspenseful thriller introduced audiences to one of the most well-known movie monsters; Lon Chaney Jr.'s "Wolf Man".

Chaney plays Larry Talbot, who is returning to his home in Wales after spending eighteen years in the United States. Larry's brother was recently killed in a hunting accident. Claude Rains stars as Larry's father, Sir John Talbot. Upon returning home, Larry helps his father install a new lens in his telescope. While peering through the lens, Larry discovers a beautiful girl in the window across the street. Her name is Gwen Conliffe (Evelyn Ankers). Larry goes over and introduces himself, and the two agree to go for a walk together that evening.

Gwen invites her friend Jenny Williams to come along. The three decide to go to have their fortunes told by a group of gypsies who have set up camp in town. Jenny goes first. Gypsy Bela (Bela Lugosi) reads Jenny's fortune. He is immediately disturbed when he sees the shape of a pentagram appear in Jenny's palm. He immediately tells Jenny to leave. Meanwhile, Gwen and Larry have walked off on their own. Minutes later, they hear a blood-curdling scream. Larry runs to investigate and finds a large wolf attacking Jenny. Larry manages to kill the wolf with his silver-handled cane, but he is bitten in the process.

Gypsy Maleva (Maria Ouspenskaya) tells Larry about the legend of the werewolf, and if a person is bitten by a werewolf and survives, they too will become a werewolf. Maleva gives Larry a charm to wear around his neck to protect himself, but he gives the charm to Gwen. On the night of the full moon, Maleva's predictions come true, as Larry Talbot is transformed into a werewolf. Will the charm protect Gwen, or will she suffer the same fate as her friend Jenny?

This movie has remained a classic for over sixty years, and it takes the viewer back to a time before the blood-and-guts horror films were popular, and movie producers relied on psychological terror to scare audiences. There is no blood in this movie, but the viewer is still scared by the unique movie sets, the fog rolling through the trees, and the haunting musical score. Lon Chaney Jr. made his role as the wolf man famous, and he's the only actor to have ever played the wolf man. Although the character was originally designed for Boris Karloff, Chaney made this his signature role. He will always be remembered as the wolf man. The other actors, especially Maria Ouspenskaya and Claude Rains, give good performances as well.

I give this movie my highest recommendation. This film takes me back to when I was a young child, and I used to stay up late on weekends watching the scary movies on television. Remember, "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolf bane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright".

3 out of 5 stars an OK disappointment.......2007-01-19

for a so-called "classic horror movie" from 1939-41 era this one is definitely the least horrorific.

5 out of 5 stars "Wolf, Gysy, Woman, Murder. What Is This?!".......2006-11-14

"Even a man who is pure of heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolf bane blooms and the autumn moon is bright."

Universal was famous for their horror films and "The Wolf Man" is one of their most entertaining. Foggy sets, a great cast and an atmospheric score from musical director Charles Previn offer late night fun for classic film fans.

Lon Chaney, son of one of the great actors of the silent film era, stars as Larry Talbot. He has come home after the tragic death of his older brother. Talbot Castle, where his father ( Claude Rains) still lives is surrounded by legends of men who turn into wolves at the full moon.

It seems like hog-wash to Larry, who sets his eye on pretty Evelyn Ankers (Gwen). Small romantic touches such as his spotting her through his telescope and immediately becoming smitten lighten the mood and make the events which follow an even deeper tragedy.

It isn't long before Gwen's gal pal is struck down in the woods by something no longer a man and no longer human. When Larry rushes to save her and is bitten in the process his fate is sealed.

Maria Ouspenskaya stands out as the knowing gypsy who forsees Larry's future and tries to help. Once he realizes the legends are true and no one is safe, he turns over the charm given him to Gwen for protection and puts the final touch on his sad destiny.

Curt Siodmak's original screenplay has just the right mix of romance and horror to make this one of the most famous and entertaining of Universal's horror films. Evelyn Ankers, who starred in many of Universal's horror and mystery films, looks lovely in Vera Ralston's gowns and makes the perfect heroine to Chaney's tortured character. This is as much fun as you can have on a rainy night with a big bowl of popcorn. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Werewolf Classic!.......2006-08-05

I can't praise this movie highly enough, it is not only the best of the universal monsters series and one of the greatest werewolf films ever made certainly the definitive treatment, but also one of my all time favourite movies. Lon Chaney turns in an outstanding credible performance worthy of his father the legendary man of a thousand faces, actually the entire cast is outstanding, Claude Rains, Maria Ouspenskaya and Bela Lugosi.

The script by Curt Siodmak is marvellous, borrowing from genuine werewolf folklore and adding its own. The plot device of having the werewolf see the pentagram on the palm of it's next victim is truly ingenious and I don't know why it was never utilised in any of the sequels or any other werewolf films for that matter.

The score by Frank Skinner and Han J Salter is so haunting, and has a nice rich romantic sound to it, especially the cues used in the gypsy camp, if only The Wolf Man weren't a b movie it probably would have won an Oscar.

Lastly it must be said that Jack Pierce's make up and John P Faulton's werewolf transformations really go along way in making this film, who could ever forget the image of the wolf man walking through the fog shrouded forest in search of fresh victims.

5 out of 5 stars The Mother of All Werewolf Movies!.......2006-03-15

Okay, so Universal Studios' 1941 classic, "The Wolf Man," wasn't the first werewolf film ever made. It is still, by far, the most widely known and loved. I mean, what werewolf is more iconic than the one Lon Chaney Jr. made famous?

The story begins with a look at an encyclopedia definition of "Lycanthropy" (werewolfism), making reference to the English village and Talbot Castle that are the settings of the film. We then meet young Larry Talbot, played by Lon Chaney Jr., being driven by a chauffer to his family home, Talbot Castle. Larry has returned, after living in America for many years, to take over the family estate after his older brother was killed in a hunting accident. We learn all this when Larry arrives and is greeted by his father, Sir John Talbot, played by the wonderful Claude Rains. Sir John is an amiable fellow, but still a bit stiff and stuck on propriety. Larry is a laid-back, American-style, "average Joe" type. It's clear that he left Talbot Castle due to the friction caused by being the younger son, second in-line for everything, but he is happy to be back and among family and friends.

Father and son happily agree to put the past behind them and settle Larry into his birthright together, and we soon find Larry and John in the observatory, where Larry works to install a new piece onto Sir John's telescope. Impressed by Larry's skill with his hands, Sir John leaves him alone to finish up. Big mistake! You can't leave Larry alone with a telescope! Larry is the Wolf-Man, after all! Ha, seriously. First thing Larry does is "accidentally" aim it at a bedroom in the nearby village, one just above Charles Conliffe's antique shop. Through the window, he discovers Conliffe's daughter, Gwen, played by the lovely Evelyn Ankers, putting on earrings as she finishes dressing. Naturally, being the wolf that he is, Larry hotfoots it over to the antique shop, and who could blame him? Gwen IS a hottie. If you think the waifish actresses we have nowadays are hot, get a load of 1940s dames! Anyway, Larry arrives and commences to put the moves on Gwen. He decides he is in the market for an antique walking stick. Gwen pokes fun at Larry, saying the dog-handled cane would suit him best, but he settles on a can with a silver, wolf's head handle instead. The handle also features a wolf inside a pentagram, which sparks Larry's curiosity. Gwen proceeds to give Larry a quick lesson on werewolves, as he has no idea what they are. She informs him that the pentagram is the mark of the werewolf, and that he sees it in the palm of his next victim's hand. At the heart of her brief tutorial is the first recitation of the film's legendary poem, "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright." Larry gets a kick out of the cane's side-story and decides to purchase it. He also makes a date to take Gwen out later that evening at eight, though she insists she cannot go out with him. As Larry exits and Gwen follows, the two see a gypsy cart traveling down the street. Larry suggests that they make their date a visit to the gypsy camp for a fortune reading, though Gwen continues to insist that she will not be coming along. Later on, Larry relays the day's events to his father, Sir John, who is happy to hear that his son is taking an interest in the townsfolk, and who also seems to know the little poem about werewolves that Gwen recited earlier. Werewolves are very popular around Talbot Castle!

8 o'clock comes around, as it always does, and Larry shows up outside the antique shop for his would-be date. Gwen is there too, waiting for him, though she still insists that she can't go. Sure, that's why she brought a chaperone along. Oh, yes, she brought a friend to make sure there was no funny business. You know how hot girls usually have unattractive best-friends around to ruin everything? Well, Gwen Conliffe has Jenny Williams. The three set off together, laughing about the situation as if they were off to see the wizard. As they walk through the eerie woods, Jenny brings up the old werewolf poem again. Clearly, the girls in this village have a werewolf fetish...hmm... When they find the old gypsy cart, Jenny asks to be the first, and Larry and Gwen are only too happy to allow it. Inside, the mysterious and off-putting Bela (the legendary Bela Lugosi) begins to read Jenny's fortune, but clearly he is having health problems. Jenny is disturbed when she notices the pentagram shaped scar on Bela's forehead. Meanwhile, outside and already a distance away, Gwen enlightens Larry as to why she has been so resistant to him. It seems that she is already engaged to the Talbot Estate's gamekeeper, Frank Andrews. Well, this doesn't stop the two from giving each other goo-goo eyes, but they are interrupted when a panicked Jenny sends out a scream in the night as she is attacked by a wolf while fleeing Bela's gypsy cart. Larry rushes to Jenny's aid but is too late to save her. He does, however, manage to kill the wolf that attacked her by beating it to death with the silver handle of his cane. Unfortunately, not before being bitten by the beast himself!

And that's just the half of it! "Whoever is bitten by a werewolf and lives, becomes a werewolf himself!"

A masterpiece and one of the classic "big three" of Universal horror, "The Wolf Man" is a must see film! Half hero, half villain, Lon Chaney Jr. turns in a performance to make his poppa proud! The makeup effects and attention to detail are phenomenal too. The Wolf Man even walks with his heels off the ground! Sure, he's fully dressed (minus shoes and socks), but he still strikes a more imposing figure than you might think! That face is totally wild! There's great chemistry between Lon and the lovely Evelyn Ankers, and the writing throughout the film is pure poetry. Claude Rains and Maria Ouspenskaya are unforgettable in their supporting roles too! A triumph in mood and style, an achievement of paranoia and fear, a study on dual identity and primitive instincts, a film that has inspired countless werewolf films since and several sequels of its own, "The Wolf Man" is still one of the best werewolf films ever made, and it's 65 years old! Props to Universal Studios and director George Waggner for that enormous achievement! Available on DVD in various forms and on VHS, I recommend the "Wolf Man Legacy Collection" 2-disc DVD set to the real werewolf fanatics out there. It also includes the sequel, "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man," along with "Werewolf of London," "She-Wolf of London," and a handful of fun bonus features. However, if you just want to see the original Universal Studios/Lon Chaney, Jr. classic, look no further! Pick this edition up today! You'll be glad you did! It's great for repeat midnight viewings!

1 out of 5 stars Horrendously bad and annoying.......2005-10-13

Typical tale of witchcraft, some college kids dig up a few corpses (to identify the DNA), the witch takes over their bodies and turns the rest into ghouls. A few are left to fight against her, helped out by a mysterious guy who knows the secret of the witch. But none of that really matters.

I don't mind if somebody wants to rip off the hand-held camcorder style of Blair Witch, but puh-leeze, let there be some reason for it. Not only is there no reason for it here, but all the scenes which might have been in the movie - the ones which advance the plot and flesh out the characters - have been jettisoned in favor of having the college kids do a bunch of utterly pointless interviews, which gives them an excuse to use a camcorder. This is as rancid as film making gets.

Just when I thought I'd had all I could take of pointless camcorder footage, along comes a solid quarter hour of camcorder footage, just interviewing random citizens that live in this town, most of it done for comic relief I guess. Though it wasn't funny. I put the DVD player on 8X fast forward and it still took several minutes to get through it.

Then we get to go through a house as viewed through the camcorder - with the low battery light blinking the entire time. Everyone acts really really scared, until they find the ghouls. Then they aren't scared any more. Apparently they filmed these scenes on different days and nobody bothered to remember that they were acting scared in the previous scene.

Lest I forget, the main character is completely obnoxious. You'll be rooting for him do die in the most gruesome way. He lives. The other characters are utterly banal.

I normally enjoy Full Moon pictures, they usually have a very original plot and make the most of their minuscule budgets. However, director J.R. Bookwalter has no use for originality - he's one of those people who look at what has made money for other people and then tries to copy it. It's people like him that are the reason Hollywood sucks as bad as it does, and now it looks like Full Moon pictures is going in that direction as well. He also manages to get the worst performances possible out of his actors.

Avoid this thing like the plague.

3 out of 5 stars Better as a stand alone than a sequel.......2005-06-03

When a couple of Goth teens are murdered as they videotape their favorite make out spot, a team of archeologists are called in to identify the teens and gain clues to their murder. Met with hostility by the town, they discover four graves on the murder site, and then must unlock that mystery as well.

While the movie has the fun energy level and cheesy special effects that we've come to know and love from Full Moon, this story has more plot holes than cohesive plot threads. For example, in Witchouse, Lilith LeFey was brought back to live of the 300 year anniversary of her murder. However, This movie gives the date of her death as 1826. the math doesn't hold up. The ending, also, gave me a massive headache. I was left staring at the screen and wondering what the heck happened. It just didn't make sense and didn't flow with the rest of the film. Also, the dead Goth teens are what brought the team to town are mentioned only in the beginning and then ignored for the last hour of film.

My only other complaint involves part of the film's style. This came out right after the first Blair Witch film, so large chunks of this film are shown only through a home video camera, in a parody of the other film's style. Full Moon is best when it's original, not when it's copying someone else.

Yes, there are better horror films and there are many horror movies that are much, much worse. Yet, if you're looking for a film that's entertaining and you don't think the story through to much, it's definitely fun.

J.R. Bookwalter took the hand Full Moon dealt him and made a NON SEQUEL to the first movie of the same name. I felt this worked SO much better. The effects work well, the acting is better than most Full Moon films and at least the darned movie was outdoors a lot more (unlike the first and most Full Moon trapped in the house plot devices). The Blair Witch-esque parts are really good.

Good job, J.R. Charlie Band should let you direct MORE Full Moon films.

5 out of 5 stars Great guilty pleasure movie.......2006-10-01

I'm not big into guilty pleasure movies. In fact of the 300 or so movies I own I think I have 3. Make it 4 now. After the first 20 minutes I was ready to turn the movie off. But I decided to watch on. And boy am I glad I did. It grew on me. It's so unique. It never takes itself too seriously while at the same time not taking itself lightly either. Great mix of horror/humor, and a fun movie I can see myself watching over and over. It ranks right up in my guilty pleasure department with Killer Klowns from Outer Space. All the characters are enjoyable and they all fit very well into the plot. It's just a fun watch. You get creepy, funny, serious, complex, simple all rolled into one. One of the few B movies that is enjoyable and gets better with each view. How can you fit 3 killer dolls, a shrunken head billionaire, a butler who wears clown make-up 24/7, a midget guard, a girl rock band electrocuted into playing songs of choice, a dominatrix female with superior intelligence and Type-A ambition, and a guy getting drilled in the heart with a drill bit all in one movie? Answer: Blood Dolls. Sometimes the stars just align perfectly. Thanks for the ride.

1 out of 5 stars Outrageous; Beyond the common Limits of Human Intelligence.......2006-02-02

"Blood Dolls" is a confounding freakfest about which little of worth can be said... It begins with a quite literal indictment of corporate ethics as a pair of unscrupulous complicitors in an unethical business enterprise enter the world of a business "genius" who wears a long-discarded X-Files prop (literally copied from the episode "Grotesque") as a mask, has a morose clown for a butler, and keeps a dwarf around for no apparent reason other than to keep the general sideshow aura amped to an extreme level. This dwarf routinely tortures his encaged, all-female rock band, who, beside being surprisingly technically adept, do little more than provide nudity. Shortly into the proceedings, the cornball bloodletting starts, the billionaire reveals the disproportionately small head beneath the mask, and one of the complicitous nobodies is transformed into a "blood doll." These must be parodies of "Puppet Master," but since that film might as well have been a parody itself, that isn't saying much. The film exudes an air of sadism amid the camp, and occassionally meanders into utterly senseless philosophical musings culled pretty much directly from the sources they cite. The acting is awful; the characters and story, absurd. However, it's also pretty damn funny, in an Ed Wood-let's take this seriously even as it becomes increasingly absurd to-kind of way. Worth a rent for a camp conoisseur, but little else.

4 out of 5 stars a great horror/humor combo.......2004-08-01

This one went surprisingly deep on the philosophical banter between the protagonist and antagonist. But it was no mere head-to-head talkie. The music was astonishingly good, the suspenseful action lent a continuing air of suspension and tension that gave you the creeps, and the script was a twist if Nietzsche meets the Twilight Zone. The babes were hot and sassy and the relationships complicated like the taste a well aged wine. If you don't like this movie, you probably don't like to have fun with horror and should seek your thrills in more somber chillers. The clown! William Burns brought levels of sophistication to his role. His character was a spiritual man, you see. The story's message might offend the devoutly religious. Too bad. Hidden talent showed up in this yarn. The girl band coulda been a contender. The lead actress in the movie leaves you begging for more. Literally.

3 out of 5 stars Where do i find the music?.......2003-04-21

The movie was "interesting" it takes some getting used to, u just have to laugh with it. I've been trying forever to track down the band that does the song "pain" but I can't figure out who sings it. the music video says "blood dolls" but nothing shows up on them as being a real band...

3 out of 5 stars I'm almost ashamed.......2003-04-10

I'm almost ashamed to admit this but I loved this movie. The first time I saw it I thought it was a parody but by the third or fourth time it simply grew on me. Virgil is a billionaire with an anatomical problem and a totally out of control sense of humor. His henchman Mr. Mascaro is a clown who has no intention of making you laugh. Virgil has a live band held captive in the living room and has living dolls who kill people. Sounds ridiculous right? Well it is but Blood Dolls never pretends to be anything more than the B flick it is.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific And Very Funny Chinese Horror-Comedy!.......2007-04-23

I wish there were more films like this one. It's great to see parody in any genre. Moreover, it is necessary at times. Which leads us to this unique film "Mr. Vampire." Having first seen the film many years ago [release date around 1986], I originally owned an import VHS copy which was pretty choppy and bad to say the least. I was happy when the DVD was released and grabbed it up right away. That's how much I like this film. The film has action, horror and comedy. Those who are into Martial Arts films, however, may not find the film as much action-based as you might like. But it does deliver as a fun parody of Martial Arts action. Nevertheless, I did like the fight sequences and acting, and the film succeeds exceptionally well as a very funny film. Which is one of the reasons I bought the film initially anyway. This is a funny delight of cinema from Hong Kong, and I would recommend to viewers to check it out.

I don't wish to give away too much of the film, therefore, I will leave out some of the funnier sequences from this review. However, I will write that the film centers on one Master Gau (Ching-Ying Lam) and his two assistants Chou (Siu-hou Chin) and Man Choi (Ricky Hui). Master Gau is in the business of controlling vampires. Both he and his assistants [bumbling ones at that] are in for one funny romp. They are trying to cope with the rewawakened corpse of a man. However, things backfire, and the viewer is in for one exceptionally funny horror-comedy. In trying to deal with the very strong 'hopping vampires' the film progresses through a maze of slapstick comedy [But in a very good way] as it spoofs Kung Fu and gives a delightfully comedic twist to the horror genre. Also, Chinese bureaucracy and the police are dealt with in a funny and lampooning way.

Yes, there are silly parts in the film, but it's done in a hysterically funny way, and that's what makes this film so funny. Also, while garlic is the recipe in the West for combating Vampires: English and American films in particular, in China--it's sticky rice. I really like this film. It delivers in every way that one will find entertaining. With Master Gau up to his elbows in trying to help his two assistant's Man Choi and Chou from falling prey to the vampire curse they now battle, he also finds himself up against one tough super powerful vampire. Not at all like what we see in the vampires flicks here in the West. This is a great and entertaining film. I recommend the film highly. I enjoyed the film immensely, and still do. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Temporarily Hold Your Breath.......2007-03-16

Don't let the title mislead you. The film title should have been translated as Mr. Zoombie instead of Mr. Vampire as these hopping ghosts are what we called zoombie. When the film was first released in the 80's, it was titled as Temporarily Stop Your Breathing. It was an enormous hit throughout Asia. 2 or 3 sequels were made afterwards. It also created a zoombie sensation in Japan. Among the Chinese zoombie movie, this one stood out the most as it succeeded in all three genres that it tried to achieve: action, comedy and horror.

Mr. Vampire, along with Chinese Ghost Story 1, is among my favorite films from the 80's.

Hop, hop and hop.

4 out of 5 stars Sticky rice!.......2006-07-19

"Mr. Vampire" is a movie for people tired of angsty, gorgeous vampires with thick Transylvanian accents.

Instead, this hilarious supernatural comedy has a different kind of vampire -- the superstrong, zombielike "hopping vampire." And dealing with the hopping vampires are a long-suffering Taoist priest and his bumbling assistants, who add all sorts of wacky twists.

Master Gau (Ching-Ying Lam) agrees to help the wealthy Yam family move their patriarch's body -- until he sees the undecayed body. Turns out Grandpa is a vampire. And after his bumbling assistants fail to properly restrain the vampire, it gets loose, kills its son, and now the vampire hunters are facing TWO vampires instead of one.

To make matters worse, Man Choi (Ricky Hui) has been infected with vampire toxin, which will turn him into a vampire if they can't cure him with sticky rice, and Chou (Siu-hou Chin) is being seduced at night by a ghost. Master Gau must cure one, save the other, and somehow destroy a superpowerful vampire that invades the Yam household.

"Mr. Vampire" was such a success in China that it started a whole trend of "hopping vampire" movies. But as with most trends, the original is still the best and more entertaining example. And it incorporates traditional vampires and succubi from China, as well as little-known mythical trivia (such as sticky rice being the "garlic" for a Chinese vampire).

Expect lots of Peter Jacksonish twisted humor (Man Choi having his fangs filed down) alongside the more typical kind (Chou and Man Choi cast a spell to make their romantic rival strip in public). But when the vampires show up, there are plenty of wild, undignified action scenes. And lots of property damage -- they break every piece of furniture they come across.

The late Ching-Ying Lam became a star thanks to this movie, and his staid, unibrowed priest is a likable guy when you consider everything he has to deal with. Hui and Chin are hysterical as a pair of earnest but hormonal guys. They're kind of an annoyance when Gau isn't actually fighting vampires, but perhaps they're good for doing errands.

(Fortunately they also cleaned up the subtitling on this movie. The original subtitling was comically bad, but the new ones are are very well done)

"Mr Vampire" is one of China's better supernatural comedies, with weird vampires and lots of sticky rice. Hysterical and warped.

5 out of 5 stars A classic film of undead martial arts tomfoolery.......2006-02-27

Very good.

The performances are excellent, and the broad humor is genuinely amusing. There's also a heck of a weird story with hopping vampires and a ghost lover. The Asian sensibility of these elements is what pushes this into the forefront. These are not Bram Stoker's undead, and even the ghost is much more physical than you'd ever see in an American film. And she can even shoot off her head, which is pretty damn neat.

This is an excellent movie for anyone looking for monsters, martial arts, and a healthy dose of humor. Can't recommend it enough. So see it already.

5 out of 5 stars Chinese ghost tale keeps things hopping.......2005-09-23

Sifu, the One Eyebrow Priest, needs all his skill to vanquish a powerful "hopping ghost"(like Hsien-Ko in "Darkstalkers," but more vicious) without much help from his two likeable, less-than-bright pupils. A bite from this creature will turn the bitten one into another vampire-zombie-ghost. Quick, get the sticky rice!

Description

Finally, the film that has it all! A mad astro-scientist ("B" horror king John Carradine) reviving corpses at his laboratory in a secluded mansion, two gore-crazed, solar-powered killer robot zombies, a bloody trail of girl-next-door victims, Chinese communist spies and deadly Mexican secret agents led by the insanely voluptuous Tura Satana (Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!) and intrepid CIA agent Wendell Corey hot on their trail and trying to figure it all out! Almost too much for one movie; must be seen to be believed! A high-powered fusion of Ed Wood, Russ Meyer and George Romero! Co-written and co-produced by television star Wayne Rogers (M*A*S*H).

2 out of 5 stars A few bits of goodness, but my finger was mostly on the FF button.......2007-04-02

I am continuing my mission to review every movie with the word "zombie" or "dead" in the title. I'm on the fence when it comes to "Astro Zombies". It's barely a good "bad movie"; and comes quite close to crossing the line into being a bad "bad movie".

First, and most important, what strain of Zombie are these Astro Zombies? These are the solar powered, plastic "space man" masked, stabbing and killing variety of zombie. There are no flesh-eaters here, but these zombies are so unique that they are almost endearing. Especially when one has to run around holding a flashlight to his solar panel, so he may ambulate at night when his power reserves are low. The zombies get a 6/10 for uniqueness.

The gore is barely existent. A few splashes of red here and there, and some jiggling hearts and brains in jars. Gore score: 1/10.

Speaking of jiggling, the gratuitous sexism and nudity is low on the scale as well. The zombies "happen" to rip open their victims' shirts while stabbing them, but it's so poorly shot that it doesn't really matter. There is one naked dancing girl, who is painted head to toe, and another young lady strapped to a torture table (for no reason what so ever). Once again, these scenes are poorly shot/lit/edited. Late 60's jiggly score of 3/10.

Unfortunately, the zombies in this movie are barely in this picture. Most of the film is taken up by John Carradine using a screwdriver. Or John Carradine flipping a switch. Or John Carradine telling his hunchback assistant about how he is going to flip a switch. Or the hunchback giving the camera a creepy look. Or federal agents talking in a room about John Carradine flipping a switch. After a while I found myself fast-forwarding lengthy sections of this movie. Boredom scale (0 being boring, 10 being Dawn of the Dead) 3/10.

Cheesy dialogue. A good "bad movie" will have a wealth of terrible one-liners and pseudo science. A bad "bad movie" will have dialogue too bad to make fun of, and acting worse than a 70's soft-core porn movie. I did enjoy the cheesy dialogue in this film. The best source of laughable lines came from Tura Satana, who was so cool and cruel that she almost seemed out of place in this film. Her bad acting was far better than everyone else's terrible acting. I give Astro Zombies a delicious cheesy dialogue score of 7/10.

Overall, I can't recommend this movie to fans of Zombie films. It is o.k. if you have a fascination with bad movies, though. Try to rent it, or pick it up used for under five dollars, if you are curious.

5 out of 5 stars GOTTA LOVE THE ASTROZOMBIES.......2004-12-10

WONDERFUL B MOVIE MAYHEM. LOVED THE SPY STUFF, CARRADINE'S PSEUDO-SCIENCE, THE GREAT WIND-UP ROBOTS AND TANKS OPENING SEQUENCE,THE ASTOZOMBIES...HELL I DUG IT ALL! NOT GREAT ART (WHO EXPECTED IT TO BE?) BUT IT IS GREAT FUN!

4 out of 5 stars an endearing guilty pleasure.......2004-09-15

I have a lot of affection for this film. I first learned about it from the Misfit's song Astrozombies and then I stumbled across Mark Of The Astrozombies (the sequel to this movie) on video. I was astounded! I then tracked down the original on DVD and it was love at first sight. I loved the great DVD cover featuring an Astrozombie attacking a beautiful female and those great cheesy blurbs like "See: Astro Space Laboratory"! Great stuff! I put this disc into my DVD player, hit play, and I had a blast! It's been magic ever since. Folks this infamous bad movie has become like a beloved retarded relative to me. Sure it's slow in spots (it would have played better if it were only a little more than an hour long so keep your finger on the fast-forward button) but it's got plenty of entertaining moments that I adore. Truly a gulity pleasure. The sequel is something else too. Wait 'til you see the living severed head of John Carradine in that one! Mark Of The Astrozombies is a fine follow-up and an even more enjoyable gulity pleasure. Ted V. Mikels has gotten better with age! THANKS TED!

2 out of 5 stars B-movie commits cardinal sin...........2004-08-22

Unlike other truly horrible B-movies, like lets say Ed Wood's movies, this movie lacks the entertainment factor and becomes bogged down in numerous sub-plots and intricacies. Over all the movie is pretty boring.
Everybody is trying to get their hands on the "Astro-Man" who is sometimes referred to as an "Astro-Zombie." The Chinese spy, Satana, who never actually identifies herself as from that country, desperately wants to deliver the all-obeying "Astro-Man" to her government. The authorities and the mad scientist's former partner also are looking for the "Astro-Man" who was stupidly ressurected from a psychopath's brain and is now on a murderous rampage through town, killing off young gals.
The movie is flawed in almost every way. Many scenes are dragged on for much too long, especially in the labortories. The mad scientist talks to his wannabe Igor in B.S scientific lingo for a good chunk of the movie. If it made sense then it might have then made a valuable addition to the movie unfortunatelyu it does not and is as I earlier said B.S. The director decided to plop down numerous scens like this throughout the movie. Also it was never explained how the authorities came to the conclsion that a zombie was killing people. They tried to somehow make sense of it and they were not able to. Yes, I know this is a B-movie, it isn't supposed to make sense.
However the most egregious flaw in this movie is also what makes this a sub-par B-movie is that the zombies were only in the movie for about 5 minutes. The first zombie was exposed to us in the first 5 minutes then dissappeared for about half an hour. Instead the movie focused more on the ridiculous and boring sub-plot of spies and police officers which was neither funny nor scary nor anything that should be in a 'quality' B-movie. When we finally get some zombie action by the end on the movie we are already bored out of our minds and then dissapointed that that action oly lasts for less than 5 minutes.
The movie fails as a good movie but more importantly it fails as a B-movie as it is boring and overall not funny. I would recommend a little bit of use of the fast forward button if I were you.

4 out of 5 stars Saw it when I was 6 or 7.......2004-03-16

I just wanted to chime in that I saw this movie at either the theatre or the drive-in when it came out. I was born in 1963 so do the math! I hesitate to buy the dvd since I know a contemporary viewing will surely pale to the effect it had on me as a kid. I thought it was a hoot at the time and always had fond memories about it. I'm glad my parents were liberal enough to allow me to become such a demented little cuss at such a young age. Thanks mom and dad!

When Universal Pictures picked up the movie rights to a Broadway adaptation of Dracula, they felt secure in handing the property over to the sinister team of actor Lon Chaney and director Tod Browning. But Chaney died of cancer, and Universal hired the Hungarian who had scored a success in the stage play: Béla Lugosi. The resulting film launched both Lugosi's baroque career and the horror-movie cycle of the 1930s. It gets off to an atmospheric start, as we meet Count Dracula in his shadowy castle in Transylvania, superbly captured by the great cinematographer Karl Freund. Eventually Dracula and his blood-sucking devotee (Dwight Frye, in one of the cinema's truly mad performances) meet their match in a vampire-hunter called Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan). If the later sections of the film are undeniably stage bound and a tad creaky, Dracula nevertheless casts a spell, thanks to Lugosi's creepily lugubrious manner and the eerie silences of Browning's directing style. (After a mood-enhancing snippet of Swan Lake under the opening titles, there is no music in the film.) Frankenstein, which was released a few months later, confirmed the horror craze, and Universal has been making money (and countless spin-off projects) from its twin titans of terror ever since. Certainly the role left a lasting impression on the increasingly addled and drug-addicted Lugosi, who was never quite able to distance himself from the part that made him a star. He was buried, at his request, in his black vampire cape. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars The first of the classic "universal" monsters...Dracula!.......2007-06-30

What else can be said about this classic tale of the macabre. Bela lugosi set the standard for all vampires to this very day. The movie is a masterpiece of cinema. This latest release has about the sharpest, cleanest print ever seen. There is now detail in the film that probably has not been seen since it's original theatrical run, over 75 years ago! There are some places with grain and some film wear, but considering it is 75 years old, it holds up well. The sound, however stated as "re-mastered" is distorted and has hiss that i'm sure could have been eliminated with today's modern electronics. The only print to have proper sound is the Original DVD release. Even the Legacy collection has the distorted sound, which i own also, and hoped it would have been fixed in this release. The supplimental material is great and enjoyable. The Philip Glass score has always annoyed the heck out of me and should have been erased long ago! It is the errie silence that makes this film scary. All in all, a great addition to any monster fan's libray. Dracula is the original monster, in all his glory and Bela lugosi, who was a very underrated actor, is marvelous and an icon the world over. A historical note: Bela only played Count Dracula twice, once in this film of course, and 17 years later in "Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein"! It's amazing how a single performance in a film would secure him such a place in history. Just watch his facial expressions and body movements, truly spectacular, something no CGI could ever duplicate today! So, Curl up on a stormy halloween night and go back to a time when blood and gore was left to the imagination.. That's what made it so scary...and timeless. Universal set the stage for all monsters then and now. Oh, and don't forget to pick up Frankenstein too!

5 out of 5 stars Why Wait For October 31st?.......2007-04-07

I'm not sure what was more enjoyable...watching this classic tale in black & white or watching my son get spooked without the blood and gore found in the horror films of today. A must have for horror film collectors or anyone that appreciates Bela Lugosi's contributions to the genre.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-03-20

THIS IS CLASSIC HORROR WITH OUT THE BLOOD AND GUTS , THIS IS WHAT STARTED THE HORROR GENRE , BELA LUGOSI IS THE ORIGINAL DRACULA.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-03-09

Got my kids to actually sit down and watch it with me. Teenagers! When we did research on the history and background of the film and actors they enjoyed the movie so much more. They said it helped put them in the mindset of the 1940's movie goer and felt the sheer terror they felt watching Dracula come to life.

5 out of 5 stars I never drink... wine.......2007-03-09

Bram Stoker's vampire novel has been remade dozens of times, but perhaps the best adaptation is the classic Bela Lugosi version. Fairly faithful to the novel and dripping with gothic atmosphere, what really makes "Dracula" stand out is the bone-chillingly charming performance by Lugosi.

A solicitor, Renfield (Dwight Frye), is travelling to Count Dracula's castle for a real estate deal, despite the locals freaking out and crossing themselves whenever Dracula's mentioned. He soon finds out why -- the Count (Lugosi) is a vampire, who enslaves a mad Renfield to his will. Soon after, a ship with a dead crew (and Renfield and Dracula in the hold) arrives in England.

Soon Dracula has moved into his new home, Carfax Abbey, and is insinuating himself with the Seward family -- and especially with pretty Lucy Westenra, who dies of blood loss and is reborn as a vampire. Only the intervention of the mysterious Dr. Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan) can stop Dracula's attacks in London.

Then there's the Spanish-language one, which is virtually identical and was filmed on the exact same sets, during the hours when the English-language one was not being shot. Same settings, same marks, same cinematography, many of the same scenes -- although it's much longer. It's excellent, and although it lacks that iconic intensity that Lugosi brought the English-language film, it's full of atmosphere and good acting.

Technically "Dracula" wasn't the first adaptation of "Dracula" -- that honor belongs to "Nosferatu" -- but it was the first to actually tackle the storyline in Stoker's book. And to date, it's perhaps the only to portray everyone's favorite vampire with the necessary atmosphere -- ominous, dignified and creepy.

Tod Browning sets it in all the necssary places -- crumbling castles, savage mountainous villages, foggy London streets, and sumptuous Victorian drawing rooms with eerie noises from outside. Granted, a fair amount of stuff is changed -- Jonathan Harker is partially replaced by the mad Renfield -- but none of these really detract from the storyline.

And Browning pours the creepiness on thickly, such as Dracula's seduction of young women, which keeps up the whole idea of vampiric sexuality. But Browning also knows how to pour on the subtle horror, without blood or violence -- like any scene with Renfield.

The script is just as great as the direction, with some unspeakably good dialogue ("For one who has not lived even a single lifetime, you're a wise man, Van Helsing"), usually from Dracula. But the best scenes and dialogue are made up of highlights from the novel (such as Dracula saying dreamily, "Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!").

But the star of all this is Lugosi himself, one of the two quintessential vampire actors (the other being Christopher Lee). While he doesn't resemble the book's Dracula, his hypnotic stare and charming, intense manner make him an ideal vampire count. And Frye deserves a nod for one of the nastiest, maddest, creepinest performances in cinema history. Sort of a nuttier, bug-eating Gollum ("Not when I can get nice fat spiders!").

The original "Dracula" is still the best, more than seventy years after it was made. Dripping with Gothic atmosphere and seductive charm, this is a magnificent piece of work.

4 out of 5 stars Complex and Satisfying Mix.......2003-10-27

An exceedingly well-done piece, with fine performances all around. Tim Curry is allowed to play a three-dimensional character, for a change, and does sterling work. Victoria Sanchez's multi-faceted Tara emerges as the focal character from a fascinating tapestry of freak show entertainers. The most freakish characters are the so-called "normal" teenage tormentors. Though the movie's finale tends toward formula, the overall mix of genres, depth of performances (even in minor characters), and original choice of settings make it a complex and satisfying experience. WARNING: if your taste is for fast MTV-style cutting, simplistic caricatures, and/or a movie ruled by flashy special effects work, this film is not for you. All others thirsting for a plot/character-driven "horror" film (or who have ever felt themselves to be "outsiders") will find this piece to be well worth while. (As a previous review noted, it's also rare [for an American production] in its use of nudity to comment on and inform the characters and their actions.)

1 out of 5 stars Blood Moon...Give Me A Break.......2003-08-04

Blood Moon is a very slow, twisted movie. It wastes the talent of the stars. Tim Curry, in this piece of garbage...come on. Shawn Ashmore "Iceman" of X-Men fame is in this movie too. You get to see him in a towel and dance around half naked and then his towel falls. Let's hope that what we see no one else does, this could really damage his "preformance" or "ability". Overall a waste of time.

2 out of 5 stars some of you must be watching a different movie.......2003-05-07

I rented this because I seen a few people on here liked it, but let me tell you, it wasn't so hot!. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one was the scene with the poodle.
The break down: cheesy FX, it did have an original story line, not enough carnage, too much time killing (and not enough real killing), TRIED TOO HARD TO BE A MUSICAL!!!!! Every few minutes you will be treated with a musical/singing/dancing with the sideshow freaks (yea, yea, I know, someone right now is thinking, well that sounds cool, trust me its not!! sound of music meets teen wolf!!!) Its that bad!

2 out of 5 stars Pathetic werewolf.......2003-02-11

Everytime I think something amazing is going to happen or some transformation ...zip happens. This movie builds up to nothing. I guess the script tried to keep it realistic througout the movie but it ended up being boring! I thought there would be thrills and special effects but it was just about this grossly hairy looking young girl in a circus- wolfgirl. She befriends a nerd who seems to have the answers to her prayers of ridding herself of her body hair. Not very clever and disappointing, frustrating. The teenagers are just plain annoying.

4 out of 5 stars Good, solid film from out of nowhere-- a real suprise!.......2002-06-26

I rented this film solely on a chance and found myself really, really suprised at just how well done it was.

Since, as of this writing, there is no plot synopsis here, I will include a brief one. A travelling sideshow, run by Tim Curry, pulls into a small town. It's star attraction is a young girl born covered in hair and billed as The Wolfgirl. She encounters taunts and threats from a group of young townie teenagers, as well as the posibility for a cure for her malady from the local misfit. The cure seems to work, but with the side effect that the previously gentle girl begins to experience more animalistic urges even as she physically becomes more "human".

This film seems to have come out of nowhere. It actually saw life on the USA Network as "Wolfgirl". I hadn't heard of it under either title. Neither name is particularly good, but hey, it's nit picking. The film far outshines such a stuff for a number of reasons.

The cast: Tim Curry is a perfect choice for Harley. He balances a desire for the financial survival of his show with a paternal love and respect for his performers. His is a colorful, yet flawed character, one whom you can easily both like and be angry with, and he makes it very believable. Grace Jones shows far more range than usual and makes great use of her androgeny in playing a half man/half woman. Darlene Cates, the mother from "Gilbert Grape" again amazes as Athena The Fat Lady. One wishes she could grace the screen more often. And Victoria Sanchez, as Tara The Wolfgirl, manages to truly seem beautiful beneath a full hairy make-up job. She is really phenomenal in a brave role for such a lovely looking young lady.

The rest of the cast is equally talented, and I would speak more of them, but for the desire to compliment some very special members. The performers of the freak show are anything but freaks. With the exception of Sanchez and Jones, almost every other sideshow performer is the real deal, and they shine. We are given a chance to see these people in everyday mode, not just as part of the show. The family they portray is believable and breathtaking. Never are they shown in anything but the most repectful light and when they get individual chances to act within character, they are, to a one, believable. Of particular note is Jordan Prentice as Finger Finnian, Harley's right hand man. Not a single false note whenever he is on screen.

The production: What an amazing-looking film! Marvelous production design gives the sideshow scenes an almost other-worldly quality. That the film was shot in Romania only adds to this old world feel within contemporary society. And Paul Jones' JoJo the Dog-Faced Boy make up design for Sanchez as the Wolfgirl is completely convincing. Really. Thom Fitzger
