4 out of 5 stars Marilyn Monroe.......2007-01-10

While this set doesn't have all the Marilyn Monroe movies, it is a good set to have. Marilyn is beautiful in all of the enclosed movies. She acted various parts and did so in different ways. This set is a good start for anyone beginning a Monroe collection!

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn Monroe Special Anniversary Collection.......2007-01-10

I bought this DVD set for my father for his birthday. He just turned 83 years old and he absolutely have always adored Marilyn Monroe and he was so thrilled when he got the set and he said the color on the DVD cover was absolutely beautiful and he (my parents and I are deaf) was happy that the movies was subtitled and he was able to fully understand everything which in back of old days, the movies were not captioned and he would just guess what the stories were about but now he does not have to play guess anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn Monroe at her best.......2007-01-09

I bought this as a gift for my 15 year old neice! Marilyn is at her best in these classics! She never goes out of style! I would recommend this set to any one that either wanted to start collecting all of her movies or just the best ones.

5 out of 5 stars I love this lady!.......2007-01-03

great movies!. I think she made a great suductress, also she has an awesome body, not a twig like the ladies of today.

4 out of 5 stars More features.......2006-12-13

While the films are a great choice and the prints are in great shape, how about some commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes. Except for SEVEN YEAR ITCH, there is nothing. Marilyn made so few films, only 12 starring roles, as compared to other superstars who've made dozens, I wish there were more to each movie...expecially deleted scenes. I know every one of these film had deletions, but no one has ever said WHAT WAS DELETED. In the case of NIAGARA, much must have been deleted because it seems so choppy. Never sure what day is when. In BLONDES, the first part of the movie also seems a bit disjointed, and one night moves into the next without explanation. I know Mr. Zanack was a stickler for short films and he cut his films a bit too much. So when and if new materials are found and put in these films, I won't be buying any more of them.

Point of No Return is one of those Hollywood remakes of a European hit in which one can visualize a committee of studio executives sitting around and saying, "Okay, we know what made the original film unique and different and fun. How can we make that same movie and do exactly the opposite?" For-hire director John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) took La Femme Nikita, Luc Besson's undeniably sexy, original, and kitschy French film about a female assassin, and translated it into a calculating, mechanistic American thriller with no distinctive style. Bridget Fonda gamely plays the willowy street punk who becomes a high-society killer, but once that provocative irony is in place, the movie is pretty much a series of by-the-numbers action set pieces. Until, that is, Dermot Mulroney shows up as a love interest; but even that twist can't save this film. You're much better off with the original, subtitles and all. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Americanized _La Femme Nikita_.......2007-06-06

Fun treatment of the French Noir Moderne classic _La Femme Nikita_, without any pretensions of grandeur. This film clearly needs some fine-print in the credits stating "we only did it for the money," but is a much more light-hearted & trendy take on the darker & more brooding French original. They're both excellent films, but PoNR being a better "movie & a pizza" choice while the original is perhaps better reserved for the serious film buffs out there. There's whole fan sites dedicated to this movie, largely due to Bridget Fonda's excellent work in injecting life back into what was essentially a story that had been "sanitized for American audiences" by an idiot-run big-budget Hollywood movie machine. Oh well, you can rarely go wrong underestimating the standards of the American public, but they almost did so when dumbing-down LFN. Fortunately, the actors & director on PoNR did a great job & by giving everything they had, brought an otherwise eviscerated cinematic story back to life. Kudos!

1 out of 5 stars Do not waste your time or money, see the original.......2007-03-06

Do not waste your time or money, see the original. Once in awhile, a remake of a movie from another culture works; for example, Seven Samurai becomes "Magnificant Seven" -- Most of the time, the remake is trash. The original "La Femme Nikita" is a great movie: exciting with a strong political viewpoint; this version is simply Hollywood pablum.

5 out of 5 stars action, romance a winner.......2007-01-21

Bridget Fonda is outstanding in this role. Good mix of action and romance. I have recommended it to several friends and they all love it too.
I also "love Nina".

2 out of 5 stars I've seen wayyyy better... even Fonda's hotness couldn't save it.......2006-12-01

I have never saw the original Nikita merely because its hard to find. I settled with the American remake as a last resort insted. It can't be that bad its got a few legendary actors in it like Gabriel Byrne, Harvey Keitel & Anne Bancroft in it. Not to mention my childhood dream woman Bridget Fonda. Damn is she sexy. But boy was I so wrong.

Anyways, the film is very violent for all the wrong reasons. Has swearing for all the wrong reasons. Even a drug addict like Fonda wouldn't mouth off everytime she opens her mouth. Thats not the girl I fell for. The pace is every sloppy. Its hard to believe how many holes in the screenplay there are for such a simple story. What is the major problem is its lack of plot. You just sit there after her missions not knowing what will happen. Its unpredicable in a bad way. There are no twists off any kind. I found the ending quite stupid. It seemed like an easy way out because the movie was almost at its 2 hour point. After the credits I felt dissapointed.

As for the actors. The beautiful Bridget Fonda puts in a good one in my book. Her blank stares are quite annoying but her sexy angry look works so well for this movie. Gabriel Byrne one of favourites puts in a kind but strict performance as he gradually becomes a father/kinda love interest figure to Fonda. Who wouldn't fall in love with her? The two work well together I'll give you that. R.I.P Anne Bancroft, forever Mrs. Robinson to me, is also scrict but very understanding to Fonda. Its also good to see her in films now that she passed away around 6 years ago I think. Finally Harvey Keitel, good in his early career is very dull at this point but since his playing a character who is dull and coldhearted, lets nothing get in his way, has no attachments and is plain evil works for this movie I guess. You see how generous I am to the actors. I could be mean to them for being in a so-so movie but I like them too much to say bad things about them. Oh did I mention I think Bridget Fonda is sexy.

4 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Very Good Remake: American Style!.......2006-10-15

I have seen, "La Femme Nikita," and it is a very good film. However, "Point Of No Return," is also a very good film. More importantly, it holds its own very well. One of the main characters is (Bridget Fonda) as the assassin working for a spy agency that you are never really sure about. Are they working in the best interests of the country? Or are they somewhere on the fringe working as a rogue agency within the CIA? Their loyalties are never really delved into. However, one thing is for sure; they are in the business of assassination. And it is the way the agency recruits their assassins that make this an interesting film. [no spoilers]

Enter the main protagonist portrayed by (Bridget Fonda). Fonda has found herself in a very difficult situation [no spoilers]. Moreover, it concerns a matter of life or death. Therefore, she feels compelled to work for this agency: even though she continously wants out of it. (Gabriel Byrne) portrays the agent in charge of her assassinations. He is an unsympathetic character, and you get the feeling that he himself was pulled into the agency in much the same way as Fonda. However, my favorite character is played by (Harvey Keitel), known simply as 'the cleaner'. He is an agent who cleans up the mistakes that members of the agency create. There are some really shocking scenes with him. I highly recommend the film. Don't compare it with the other, they are different, and both deserving of praise. Recommended!

The dew of new stardom was still visible on Marilyn Monroe when she ventured up to Canada to shoot this sturdily entertaining CinemaScope Western. Although director Otto Preminger later claimed little interest in the picture, he couldn't help but bring his even-handed visual style to the widescreen process. The location shooting (in Alberta) is eye filling, and that river really does look alarming. Best of all, Marilyn, fresh and vital, had a costar to match her magnetism but not humor her sometimes-scattered approach to acting: Robert Mitchum, as a homesteader with a dark past. He's weighty enough to stand next to MM's bright flame without giving any ground; they should have worked together again. Since Marilyn plays a saloon singer, she gets to sling some tunes in her inimitable style, with as much glamour as the gold rush-era trappings will allow, giving "I'm Going to File My Claim" various meanings. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Haunting River of No Return.......2007-01-11

The background music of this excellent film is beautifully haunting and very suited for the movie. We have watched this film AT LEAST 6 times and is on a par with The Duke's Rio Bravo.

4 out of 5 stars Mitchim offers a portrayal of total integrity with all the conviction of a Joel McCrea or Randolph Scott..........2006-11-10

Perhaps because of his air of detachment, the typical Mitchum situation is one of being drawn into events... Otto Preminger's "River of No Return" is set in Northwest Canada, in savage Indian territory, in the gold rush days... The plot is weak but the scenery is spectacular and the action of the river dramatically powerful... Otto Preminger knew how to create tension and threat in the grandeur and menace of the Canadian Rockies...

The film opens in 1875 with widower Matt Calder (Mitchum), coming to town, where his ten-year-old son Mark (Tommy Rettig) is waiting for him... He has served a term in prison for shooting a man in the back, even though he shot the man only to keep him from murdering a friend... Mark has now been sent to join his father, who has bought a farm for them...

Mark has made the acquaintance of Kay (Marilyn Monroe), a saloon singer, while waiting for his father.... Calder thanks Kay for her kindness to his boy, and father and son depart for their farm...

One day, Calder sees Kay and gambler Harry Weston (Rory Calhoun) in trouble on a raft in the river near his home... He helps them ashore and learns that Watson is in a hurry to get to town to register a gold claim... So eager is he that he steals his rescuer's only horse, and leaving his girl behind as well, rides away...

The predicament of those left is deepened by the fact that Indians are on a rampage and are due to attack the farm at any moment... The only way left to get to town is by a wild river...

Photographed in Technicolor and CinemaScope, the film is designed to exploit the splendors of the mountains, trees and rapid rivers plus the magnetic pleasant figure of Marilyn who is the only charming woman surrounded by two handsome men and a charming kid...

Marilyn sings 4 numbers in the film: "One Silver Dollar," "I'm Gonna File My Claim," "Down in the Meadow," and "The River of No Return."

The little boy, Tommy Rettig, played another big-scale Western, Delmer Daves' "The Last Wagon," with Richard Widmark, Felicia Farr, and Susan Kohner...

5 out of 5 stars RIVER OF NO RETURN.......2006-08-26

VERY WELL WRITTEN AND PRODUCED. GOOD PERFORMANCES BY ALL THE MAJOR ACTORS, (MARILYN MONROE, ROBERT MITCHUM, TOMMY RETTIG, & RORY CALHOUN). CHET ATKINS GUITAR PERFECT FOR THE TITLE SONG.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated Monroe vehicle.......2006-07-22

I very much enjoyed this movie.
It has something for everybody:beautiful scenery, great songs, the beauty of Marilyn,a bit of action, suspense.
The movie-going Public in the 50's did not enjoy Monroe in straight roles, and proved it by not buying many tickets to watch these films.
'Don't Bother to Knock','Niagara','The Misfits',and 'River of no Return' had very average Box-Office appeal.
However,i find this film pleasant to watch. The chemistry with Robert Mitchum works well.It is a nice touch to see Marilyn interact with a child (Rettig is doing a good job),but my favorite scenes are the ones at the Saloon.Monroe was doing her own singing, which was quite a rare occurance for actresses of that era.
Also something I found interesting, was the depiction of the Marilyn character, basically a 'Bad-girl' trying hard to be a 'Good-girl'.She plays it rather convincingly,in showing the dilemna of such an exercise.
To conclude,i believe that it is safe to say that this is not the best film of Preminger, but then again not his worst (calling..Skidoo ?)

4 out of 5 stars wild river .......2006-06-03

This is the first Marilyn Monroe movie I saw in which she played a sophisticated character - a salon singer who gave her every penny for her untrustworthy boyfriend to file claim on a potential goldmine. And she played it well and sang beautifully.

The fact that the movie was shot in the picturesque Canada certainly helped. The roaring river and the rocky cliffs did not pale even when compared with River Wild (Meryl Streep) made decades later. Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe were a perfect couple. Two lonely souls in the west who deserved a better life.

For the superb cineamatography, the theme song (sang by Monroe during the movie and again at the end in a western cowboy style) and the leading characters, this is a movie to see.

Tracy and Jay Osborne's mother is shipping the unwilling children off to their grandfather's house for Easter vacation while she attends to business in Hong Kong. The children plot a trip to visit their mother and, with the help of Jay's pet skunk, evade their grandfather and airport security to escape in a taxicab with two safe-cracking vandals. The foursome proceeds to stage a kidnapping--although just who kidnapped whom is up for debate. Grandfather refuses to pay the ransom, the police get involved, and hilarity reigns as the desperate group attempts to collect the ransom money. The talents of Barbara Feldon, David Niven, Darren McGavin, and Don Knotts rejuvenate this fairly unremarkable plot. Slapstick comedy, perilous excursions, and fast-paced chase scenes abound in this wholesome 1976 Disney production. (Ages 3 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Description

There's magic in the memories as great Disney moments are captured right here for you and your family to enjoy. Oscar(R)-winning actor David Niven (Best Actor, SEPARATE TABLES, 1958) stars as a millionaire with two bored grandchildren who fake their own kidnapping, holding themselves for ransom! In cahoots with the kids is a pair of down-on-their-luck safecrackers (Darren McGavin and Don Knotts). It doesn't take long for the two young pranksters to discover just how impractical a practical joke can be. The mayhem escalates into an all-out cops-and-robbers chase filled with every bit as much hilarity as excitement.

Fabulous movie! This is a timeless classic that kids today will enjoy just as much as their parents did when they were younger. Don Knotts and Darrin McGavin are PERFECT together! It's a great way to spend an evening with the entire family.
The only downside is this film isn't available in widescreen format other than that it's outta sight man!

5 out of 5 stars Totaly Underestimated !!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-31

I think this movie gets far to little credit. The skunk and car chase are the funnies parts of the movie. Kids will probably like this movie better than adults because they like jokes that an adult would label as "overly funny." Please, watch the movie yourself before you judge it based on the reviews.

2 out of 5 stars Niven is good, movie drags........2005-11-18

MOVIE: No Deposit, No Return is a 1976 Disney movie I looked forward to seeing as a kid after viewing the theatrical trailer. I distinctly remember it showing scenes of the police chase and two police cruisers sideswiping each other. But the movie was ultimately a forgotten by me, probably for good reason. (This theatrical trailer is NOT included on the DVD despite what the packaging says. The DVD includes a TV spot for NDNR from "The Wonderful World of Disney".)

To remember I watched it recently, but was again let down. The movie begins reasonably, but really slows down during two extended scenes. The first is with a ground burrowing skunk (a pet!) climbing to top of a multi-story building chased by kid owner Jay (Brad Savage from The Apple Dumpling Gang) and kidnapper wannabe Bert (Don Knotts). The second is the previously mentioned police chase where little by little and fender by fender the deficient detectives destroy their police car. And the ending of the film, while sweet, doesn't seem to help it out of its rut.

Kim Richards, of Witch Mountain fame, plays the smartest character in the movie, Tracy. She's sister to Jay, both who are sent to their grandfather J. W. Osborne for Easter (?!?) vacation. She plots and schemes, in ways many children would love to do, to avoid him and actually spend the time with their working mother in Hong Kong. This is typical Disney, where children are smarter than the adults and have crazy adventures. The kids ditch grandfather's butler at the airport when they arrive and jump into a waiting taxi. At least they think they do. Grandfather Osborne, played with dignity by David Niven, sees this and follows them to see what's up.

But while the precious pair have been running through the terminal, down-on-their-luck crooks Bert and Duke (Darren McGavin) have bungled an airport safecracking heist. Fleeing, they also leap into the same taxi as the kids, deciding to make a quick exit together. After pleading to stay for the night at the crooks' garage hideout, the kids discover that their new "friends" are in deep with loan shark Big Joe Adamo (Vic Tayback). Tracy then concocts the fake kidnapping by Bert and Duke to pay off Big Joe and buy plane tickets for Jay and her to see Mom in Hong Kong. Thus, the main movie plot is revealed and the ultimately explains its comedic title seeing as how Osborne doesn't feel obligated to pay the ransom, knowing the children's location.

Granted, Tracy could have just asked her grandfather for the money, but the movie makes it clear that they don't like each other enough for her to even ask.

While Jay chases his pet skunk as Duster wanders off again and again, Big Joe keeps applying pressure, and Osborne contentedly rationalizes non-payment, the ransom amount keeps dropping. It's at this point that the film loses it steam, when it should have kept building to the climax. The actors all do a fine job. The plot is amusing and interesting, although highly improbable. However the film loses focus by the overlong antics of Knotts and the skunk on the building's flagpole are followed by Knotts bumbling around on construction girders.

Meanwhile detectives (Herschel Bernardi and Charles Martin Smith) are trying to track down the supposed kidnappers, after Tracy puts the police on the case! This eventually leads to their big drawn out scene of police car brutality, brutal piece by brutal piece. The previews were funnier, probably because they were shorter. In another development, Mom (Barbara Feldon) had arrived at the ransom drop-off point and has jumped into Bert and Duke's convertible. Strangely enough, but not really ironically, she gets lectured on childcare by the kidnappers as they zoom about the docks in the great car chase.

But the movie isn't over yet; Jay and Tracy go to Grandfather's mansion where they accidentally become trapped in his safe. Learning that the kids have gone there, everyone else, except Grandfather Osborne, go there. Then it becomes Bert and Duke's big moment to redeem themselves in front of Mom and police by cracking open the safe. This scene is a little long.

Afterward, everybody is happy and getting along. Formerly dignified J. W. Osborne has now learned how to become a grandpa, even taking a tumble in a fountain. It makes a nice postlude, but it sure happened in a hurry. The story did not really explain this change, but assumes that the preceding traumatic events would change him. How else would it end up in a Disney movie?

DVD: Bad. Not widescreen, so no sale for me. Theatrical trailer is a lie. Bad transfer. Nothing special.

1 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 star Movie but a 1 Star DVD!.......2004-09-08

I like Kim Richards, she is really very pretty and is a a very good actress and I wish I had hair like hers!

No Deposit No Returns is a good movie and I've been waiting for so long for it to come to DVD but now that it has come to DVD I'm mad that the transfer is stinky and it is only fullframe and not widescreen.

Does Disney hate widescreen or something?

FYI: Kim Richards in real life is the aunt of Paris and Nicky Hilton. Their mother Kathy is Kim's sister.

1 out of 5 stars DVD = "Deposit" Very Defective.......2004-07-15

Buyers, beware! The recently released DVD of "No Deposit, No Return" is defective, at least here on the East coast. I exchanged three discs from two different stores of a major media retailer (initials BB) and all three copies had the same glitches in the same scenes. Obviously a manufacturing error. Hopefully an official recall from Disney is forthcoming. Also, I noticed that on some Deposit discs the voice-over varies for the so-called "trailer" (actually just a :30 promo for the film's broadcast airing on The Wonderful World of Disney). On my first disc, the voice was that of the original announcer from the 1970s (very nostalgic). On all subsequent discs, however, the voice was that of the contemporary announcer one hears on all current Disney video promos (not so nostalgic). At least the "Hot Lead and Cold Feet" theatrical trailer included on that disc is the real deal (includes even an accompanying Mr. Toad cartoon). But getting back to "No Deposit", be prepared for glitches when you purchase or rent your disc. I plan to hang on to my Ebay-purchased VHS until enough time has passed that another DVD printing has occurred. Seeing as how neither format is letterboxed or of any admirable picture quality, bailing on the DVD really is no sacrifice. Hey, if you can live with glitches, pay this review no mind. Everyone else: Hang on to that receipt!

Description

Set against the majestic beauty of the great Northwest, Matt Calder (Robert Mitchum) is a rugged widower with a questionable past who decides it's time to start a new life with his young son, Mark (Tommy Rettig). But their peaceful existence is sabotaged when Matt is robbed and pistol-whipped by cold-blooded gambler Harry Weston (Rory Calhoun). Unexpectedly, Weston's fiancée, Kay (Marilyn Monroe) postpones her wedding so she can nurse Matt back to heath. In his pursuit to exact revenge at any cost, Matt takes Kay and Mark on a treacherous ride down a roaring river, where they're at the mercy of wild animals and a lawless frontier.

Some essential examples of the Marilyn Monroe mystique make up this second collection of titles from MM's years at Twentieth Century Fox. After sparkling in small roles, she burst upon the public consciousness in 1952, thanks to five films and a certain nude calendar. Two of the 1952 pictures, showing very different sides of the new actress, are included here. One is Monkey Business, Howard Hawks's raucous comedy about a youth serum, in which top-lined stars Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers regress to a state of adolescent abandon, with Monroe doing spot-on supporting duty. Don't Bother to Knock gives Marilyn her first lead role, in a tense little film noir; she's a babysitter with an unstable streak, a fine performance hinting at depths rarely touched in her career.

In Niagara, Monroe is a full-fledged sex goddess, a scheming wife tormenting husband Joseph Cotten in their cabin by the falls. This Technicolor slice of pseudo-Hitchcock is a fun location picture with a genuinely exciting climax. Otto Preminger's River of No Return has Marilyn livened up by the presence of costar Robert Mitchum, in a strong outdoorsy Western that catches the two stars in appealing form. By the time of 1960's Let's Make Love, MM looks tired. This backstage musical is more interesting as a time capsule than as a romance, although one number shines: "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Less urgent for Monroe fans than the first Diamond Collection, this set is still a good one for the die-hards. --Robert Horton

If you're a fan of Marilyn Monroe, this is a great collection ... each selection is Classic Marilyn. Quality is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING LEGENDARY PERFORMANCES~BRAVO MARILYN!!! .......2006-11-10

Marilyn Monroe is a once-in-a-lifetime legend and nobody has come along since to match the magic of this gifted and very versatile performer...each gem in this Diamond Collection are classics to be enjoyed over and over again for anyone who enjoys the finest that the world of entertainment has to offer! "Don't Bother To Knock" is an amazing hauntingly brilliant performance early in Marilyn's career that shows incredible dramatic range while "Monkey Business" is a fun romp showing Monroe's great comic ability. "Niagara" is a real DIVA Superstar turn unlike any other and Marilyn is drop-dead gorgeous in this colorful spectactular with this film being the one that made Marilyn Monroe a true film Superstar and introduced without a doubt that famous Monroe walk with Marilyn unforgettable in that sumptuous red dress...mesmerizing and exotic singing "Kiss" and never was Marilyn more seductive!!! "River Of No Return" is a great movie that has aged well having a timeless quality to it with a moving and richly etched performance from Marilyn that holds up well today...musical numbers show Marilyn had her own totally original style and made magic with these numbers and every moment is fascinating to watch. "Let's Make Love" was ahead of its time and its style of intergrating musical numbers into the story was used some ten years later in "Cabaret"...listening to the Original Soundtrack CD it is clear that Marilyn delivers some of the finest musical performances of her brilliant career (Cole Porter's "My Hear Belongs To Daddy" is a real showstopper!) making this a must have for fans of great musical films and this winning release also features wonderful unreleased performances not in the film...as a young teen who sneaked into the theatre to see this racy at that time film, I have lost track of how many times I have seen this classic and find it richly entertaining every time...and the final never completed "Something's Got TO Give" show a sophisicated and very beautiful Marilyn who never looked so stunning on the big screen and this motion picture would have been a real classic...Marilyn was coming into her own as a unique performer and living screen legend who showed promise of becoming the greatest star of her generation...too bad her career which meant so much to Marilyn and showed such promise of hitting greater heights was cut tragically short. Thankfully movies such as these keep this incredible legend alive and Marilyn will in this way always shine the brightest and she always lit the screen up in a way that nobody else ever could...Marilyn was the true meaning of SUPERSTAR...we love and miss you Marilyn and thank you for leaving behind a treasure chest of magic for all of us to savor and enjoy!!!

3 out of 5 stars Niagara is a (flawed) Gem.......2006-01-01

I bought the 1st Diamond collection for my wife (a devoted Marilyn fan) and we were both impressed with the quality of the restorations. We were looking for more of the same with the Marilyn II collection. Although I ordered the collection well before Christmas, I didn't receive it until the day after Christmas. The tracking site showed it ready for pickup on December 18. When we received it we first viewed Niagara. The restoration was very good. I've been to the Falls many times and I got a kick out of how little things had changed since this movie was shot. Joseph Cotton was very convincing as the tortured soul who was infatuated with Marilyn. The action was well-paced and kept you in suspense during the last half of the movie. Unfortunately, this DVD was defective and the picture broke up 30 minutes into the movie and we lost about 10 minutes of the movie. I went to Amazon's site and after going through a short questionaire I was able to print out a postage-paid mailer without having to talk to anyone. I returned the collection for replacement due to arrive in a week. Hopefully this one will not be defective since we are looking forward to viewing the other DVDs in this set.

5 out of 5 stars Waiting for the soundtrack of the DIAMOND COLLECTION , Volume II. This collection merits a soundtrack........2005-12-19

After The DIAMOND COLLECTION of Marilyn Monroe DVD was released,
a soundtrack CD was also released with many interesting tracks.
Yet this time around, no soundtrack was released. I am waiting
for a soundtrack with the songs Marilyn sings in NIAGARA (KISS),
River of No Return, and Lets Make Love, as well as the main themes from Don't Bother to Knock, and Monkey Business. There must be enough tracks in the vaults of 2oth Century Fox to include as Bonus items of Marilyn Monroe singing, deleted songs
from her movies, alternate takes, etc. We Marilyn Monroe fans
demand that a soundtrack CD to the Marilyn Monroe DIAMOND COLLECTION vol. II be released.

2 out of 5 stars I like the beginning episodes........2004-10-17

This may be a hard review for some to get. This is probably the last review I write about yu yu hakusho.

This thought of good demons and bad demons has to die. It's confusing and probably leading many people down the wrong path. For example, their is now a belief- due to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Harry Potter", "The Craft", and the one with Alyssa Milano(sp?)- that witchcraft has a good side and a bad side. This is totally untrue. All witchcraft is evil.

There also seems to be an overload of anime that says there are good and bad demons. The truth: all demons are bad and they only have one goal- to kill, steal, or destory.

This is my last message on this topic.

-Calvin

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-07-23

I have seen these episodes on TV and I wish when someone does a review that they would tell people if it is uncut or edited, or what would be even better if the people that were selling the movie would tell use if it was uncut or edited some of the movies say they are but not all of them.

5 out of 5 stars The second half of the semifinals........2003-08-27

Yu Yu Hakusho is the best anime ever. With that said and done, the latest volume concludes the Urameshi Team's semifinal match. Uraurashima has caused Kurama to become Yoko Kurama, and the demon demands to know where his now freaking out opponent received the mysterious item that has helped him regain his power. Kuwabara is set to fight the final matches against the team, but thanks to his goofing up, the severely weakened Genkai has to take out bot Shi Shi Wakamaru and the mysterious Onji, who's hiding something. Plus, will Yusuke be able to control the power given to him by Genkai, or will the stress kill him? Well, he's the main character, so I doubt he'll die. On the episodes, the action is of course awesome, especially the part where Shishiwakamaru releases these souls at Genkai, and they attack the audience! Plus, the emotional scenes are done extremely well. I was near tears during the scene with Yusuke and Puu, which I won't spoil. All in all, another good DVD on Yu Yu Hakusho. I can't wait to see the next episodes!

4 out of 5 stars "unique" Baywatch episode..........2005-08-11

I used to have a lot of Baywatch's from tv taped on some videos but this is the only one i have now,and it's the actual video as represented here. It's a unique episode in which it's the only one in Baywatch history that features my three favorite blonds on the same episode...that being Pamela Anderson,Nicole Eggert and Erika Eleniak. You see,Erika's last show was this one and it happened to be Pamela's first. This is also Nicole's debut episode. So,thats a little Baywatch trivia i guess. Anyhow, decent story with awesome scenery as it takes place away from the beach (mostly) and is set somewhere on the Sacramento river. It'll make you wanna go camping watching this. The only sour parts of the show for me was Hobie constantly singing that gold miners song (you wanna strangle him after the 2nd time) and the fact that Erika (Shauni) cut her hair at some point and has it short. It should be long like Pamela's!!

3 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end for the REAL Baywatch.......2005-05-05

Season 1 was great, gritty storylines, realistic credible characters and some great music montages. This disc features the Season 2 pilot episode called Nightmare Bay. Gone are Parker Stevenson, Brandon Call and Shawn Weatherly only to be replaced in this episode by Jeremy Jackson as Hobie, Tom McTigue as Harvey and for this episode only Andrea Thompson as Devon Connor. David Hasselhoff, Billy Warlock and Erika Eleniak remain from season 1. This was a good episode in places including a great rescue scene featuring Erika Eleniak (Shauni) saving a young girl from drowning and befriending her and her family. The rest of the show follows a monster in the bay storyline which turns out to be a mini-sub. The second side of this disc features the pilot episode of season 3 - River Of No Return. This episode sees the debut of a whole new cast of characters including David Charvet as Matt Brody, Pamela Denise Anderson as CJ Parker, Nicole Eggert as Summer Quinn, Kelly Slater as Jimmy Slade and Susan Anton as Jackie Quinn. This episode also features the marriage and departure of Eddie (Billy Warlock) & Shauni (Erika Eleniak) after a white water rapids adventure with Mitch, Hobie and CJ. Overall this DVD is one I would recommend, it's really the last parts of Baywatch you'll find before the show really lost any credibility it had and earnt the name Babewatch.

Cast includes: David Hasselhoff as Lt Mitch Buchannon, Billy Warlock as Eddie Kramer, Erika Eleniak as Shauni McClain, Monte Markham as Captain Don Thorpe, Richard Jaeckel as Lt Ben Edwards, Andrea Thompson as Devon Connor, Tom McTigue as Harvey Miller, Pamela Denise Anderson as CJ Parker, David Charvet as Matt Brody, Nicole Eggert as Summer Quinn, Kelly Slater as Jimmy Slade & Susan Anton as Jackie Quinn.

3 out of 5 stars It's not how it was used to be.......2004-10-13

When you think this two episodes (from the 2nd and 3rd Baywatch
season) are the same as when they were broadcasted on television, then you are wrong. This DVD version is different comparing it with the tv-broadcast versions.

Let's begin with the featured SONGS. On this DVD
they replaced the original songs "Get up" (Mike and the Mechanics) for another artist. And "Keep me running" (Noiseworks) has been replaced for also another song.
Why? I don't know, perhaps the music-rights for DVD-customers
use was too high, so they used other artists.
Another point is EDITING. On this DVD the edit crew cut off
all the fadeins/fadeouts from each scene. So, the sound
doesn't fade away slowly, but very rough.

Also, many original CASTMEMBERS from the first season (1989/1990) are being replaced by other actors. So, it's not how it used to be. Brandon Call (Hobie - season 1) is not the same as Jeremy Jackson (Hobie - season 2). You'll also miss strong actors like Parker Stevenson, Michael McManus, Holly Gagnier. It seems like they tried to reborn the show, but the classic Baywatch fans (from the first season - 1989), know better, "Nightmare Bay" and "River of no return" are not how
Baywatch was used to be.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2003-10-21

Good DVD TV Show. This DVD was good I liked it because David Charvet, Jeremy Jackson, Nicole Eggert, and Pamela Anderson were in it. David Charvet and Jeremy Jackson are so hot! David has great everything: hair, face, body, abs, voice. Jeremy is still young in this show but as he got older he became a hunk. He has great everything too: face, body, abs, voice. Nicole Eggert and Pam Anderson are hot too. Nicole and Pam are hot back in the day in this DVD. They are older now and are sure showing it they are not as appealing these days. I must say that Pam sure does have great big ones...Being a teen guy I know Baywatch having seen it over the past few years on the spike t.v. channel.

4 out of 5 stars Better than expected.......2006-08-06

Once you get past the low budget feel, the story itself is very interesting with some surprising twists. You have to try to look past some of the acting (which is actually kind of comical), although the main characters do a good job. The first 15-20 minutes I spent laughing at some of the acting and the "soap opera feel," but after that really got hooked to the story and had quite a twist of an ending! If you love supernatural movies, you gotta see it!

Amazing, a must see for fans of suspense and horror. Very Chilling. This one totally gets under your skin. I recommend it highly.

"I¹ll come back," vows terminally ill Michael Darrow (Tim Palcic) with his last breath. He swore they¹d to be together forever, no matter what. And when Alice falls in love with another man (Wendell Willat), Michael exacts a chilling revenge so he can keep his wife all to himself by any means necessary!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A must-own for Fuller fans.......2003-02-19

Jean-Luc Godard described Samuel Fuller's films as "cinema fist," and that's certainly true of Fuller's last film, the underrated _Street of No Return_. A bizarre, fast-moving noirish cocktail of love and death (with an unexpected ending that feels more like fantasy than fact), _Street_ bears the director's indelible stamp on every frame. The use of Lisbon locations to stand in for an unnamed American city creates a perverse visual poetry out of the production's budgetary constraints.

Keith Carradine acquits himself well as the film's male lead, but it's Bill Duke as a Black police chief who explodes all over the screen. The DVD from Fantoma features a very good video transfer and remixed audio; special features include an atrocious audio commentary from Carradine (couldn't they have roped a few film scholars into doing this instead?), a text interview with Fuller, and a marvelous new featurette with plenty of screen time devoted to Fuller's outsized personality.

Fuller's autobiography _A Third Face_ mentions that, as was often the case with his projects in the '70s and '80s, this film was taken out of his hands at the last minute and re-edited. The version of _Street of No Return_ that he intended us to see is probably lost by now. But even in this shortened version, it's a ripping good swan song. No one before or since has made films like Fuller, and it's our loss.

3 out of 5 stars Truncated Fuller.......2002-11-08

This is Samuel Fuller's last film, 1989, starring Keith Carradine as a former pop star (wearing overly glam clothes and singing schmaltzy guitar and orchestra 80s pop songs to an adoring audience in flashback) who loses the girl of his dreams and wanders into the life of a drunken bum after getting his vocal cords cut for his dallying with the girl, a mobster's babe. No cords, no singing. No singing, no money. Et cetera.

Based on a strong hard boiled novel by David Goodis, ca. 1950s, the film is, unfortunately, a travesty of the novel. While the book does a great job of linking Eugene's (Michael in the movie) descent into the lower depths with the corruption of the world around him--cop and criminal both--the movie short changes the viewer on everything: the plot, the characters, emotional resonance.

The movie was made in Portugal with Portuguese and French actors in most roles, along with Americans Keith Carradine and Bill Duke. In fact, the film feels way too much like it's a B minus movie made exclusively for the European market, with its truncated, cliched dialogue. You've seen these movies before, in which just about all the characters spout dialogue that's tailor made for actors who struggle with English, since it's not their native language. Because of that, the script is made up of short lines, easy to memorize and pronounce for non-English speaking folks. This, of course, tends to substantially limit the depth of emotion at any given point in any of these films. And that is, unfortunately, the case with Street of No Return.

Carradine is fine, but he doesn't have much to do. The book portrays Eugene's emotions far more deeply than does the film, so that the reader understands--FEELS--how it is that this man could sink so low after the loss of a love. The movie moves through this plot point(s) so abruptly that it's basically impossible to sympathize with Michael/Eugene; we merely watch him go through the motions of drinking and reacting to stuff as it happens. But even the stuff that happens is cursorily or tritely portrayed. A race riot in the beginning of the film is much too stagey to look credible, for example.

The three stars are for the concept of the film which is great, and also for the extras, principally the terrific 32-minute featurette on the Making of Street of No Return, in which Fuller is interviewed on the set. He's quite a character and evokes great sympathy, with his strong views on society, violence, and hypocrisy. Moving around the set with an 11-inch cigar in his mouth, he looks like--and was--the last of the legendary maverick directors.

The featurette gets five stars; the film gets about 2 and a half. Hence the three stars for the DVD.
