When Elvis-like rock & roll star Conrad Birdie is drafted into the military, the teen nation is united by a contest in which the winner bestows a farewell kiss upon their idol while on the Ed Sullivan Show. Ann-Margret (in her film debut) is the lucky little lady from Sweet Apple, Ohio, who wins the contest, much to the chagrin of her steady beau (Bobby Rydell) and miserable parents (Paul Lynde and Mary LaRoche). Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh are an older couple kept from marrying by his meddlesome mother, played to the hilt by Maureen Stapleton. Lightweight but fun, this features an exuberant soundtrack with such memorable ditties as "Put on a Happy Face" and "Kids" and the title track. This is a much better choice than the lackluster, 1995 made-for-TV version. --Rochelle O'Gorman

3 out of 5 stars Hello Again, Birdie.......2007-05-08

More than 40 years after first viewing in theatres, this is still a delightful escape with a trip down memory lane. Music and lyrics are classics. Ann-Margret and Janet Leigh display dancing and singing talent that is often forgotten, with excellent support work from Dick Van Dyke, Paul Lynde, Bobby Rydell and Maureen Stapleton. The times certainly changed after this period of adolescence, but Bye Bye Birdie took us back to an age of naivety where nothing bad was ever going to happen to us. Good social comment of the time.

4 out of 5 stars Great family movie.......2007-01-11

My 11 year old son is trying out for a part in a local production of "Bye Bye Birdie" so I purchased this DVD so we could both get an idea of what the movie/play is all about and get a flavor for the musical productions. Even though this movie was made in the 1960's, it was very entertaining for both of us. The movie is good clean family entertainment and is well worth purchasing to have as a part of our family movie library.

5 out of 5 stars BYE BYE BIRDIE.......2006-11-10

EVEN IN THE BEGINNING ANN MARGARET WAS WONDERFUL.. BOBBY WAS JUST SO GREAT LOOKING (STILL IS. THIS MOVIE WAS REALLY FUNNY AND WILL BE AROUND FOR A LONG TIME TO COME!!

4 out of 5 stars Just a good old fashioned goofy musical.......2006-09-01

I watched this recently and realized I had forgotten about a lot of it. I still really think Ann Margret was dazzling. and absolutely perfect for the role of Kim. I didn't care much for Janet Leigh in this one, it must have been the black hair -- and I don't think when I saw this as a teen that I even realized she was supposed to be LATINO. O-kay . . . .

I think the biggest surprise in this film was Bobby Rydell, the early 60s teen idol (who could actually sing) -- he was amazing as Hugo. Wow! He just flowed thru that thing like he'd been doing it all his life .. . but then, I don't remember him ever doing it again . ..? I know he still tours, with Frankie Avalon and Fabian I think, and he looks really DIFFERENT -- I mean, he looks an awful lot like George W. Bush nowadays. Weird. Anyhow, I thought he was perfect for his part as well, as for the rest, some of it got to be a bit much -- esp. Paul Lynde and his whiny sarcasm (how much of that can you take?) and that Ed Sullivan skit was just silly. But, I love the Kim/Hugo/Birdie dance in the soda shoppe, that makes the film, I think. Watch it with your teenagers, if you can corral them for a while.

Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold-war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. Dr. Strangelove is a perfect spoof of political and military insanity, beginning when General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), a maniacal warrior obsessed with "the purity of precious bodily fluids," mounts his singular campaign against Communism by ordering a squadron of B-52 bombers to attack the Soviet Union. The Soviets counter the threat with a so- called "Doomsday Device," and the world hangs in the balance while the U.S. president (Peter Sellers) engages in hilarious hot-line negotiations with his Soviet counterpart. Sellers also plays a British military attaché and the mad bomb-maker Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott is outrageously frantic as General Buck Turgidson, whose presidential advice consists mainly of panic and statistics about "acceptable losses." With dialogue ("You can't fight here! This is the war room!") and images (Slim Pickens's character riding the bomb to oblivion) that have become a part of our cultural vocabulary, Kubrick's film regularly appears on critics' lists of the all-time best. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PARODY ON SUPERPOWER GOVERNMENTS.......2007-07-06

This work is a wonderful parody on how the so called super powers of the world (past or present) poster themselves.

It shows all that although the governments may try to be oh so serious, they end up looking like bumbling idiots falling all over each other with the ultimate destruction of all as a result.

Riding the bomb rodeo style was a nice touch - GREAT WORK!

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Strangelove.......2007-06-27

The most inspired piece of Cold War satire ever and one of the screen's supreme black comedies, Kubrick's 1964 "Strangelove" confronted jittery audiences in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and not long after the advent of the H bomb. With Kubrick's twisted genius as director and screenwriter in full bloom, and peerless performances by Peter Sellers (in three roles), Scott, and the unhinged Hayden, the film is unbearably funny and extremely disturbing all at once.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great Black Comedies.......2007-06-21

This work doesn't need much explaination. It is a true classic black comedy. It uses humaor to show how ludicrous and easily corrupted our governments truly are. It simultaneously shines a homorous and frightening light on nuclear war. In my opinion, this is well worth your time. And if you are interested in nuclear war, World War III or end times works, I highly recommend the book Mysteries of the Universe... it is shocking, controversial and frightening! Here's tha amazon page link: Mysteries of the Universe: A Revolutionary Commentary on UFOs, Aliens, Angels, Pyramids, Bible Codes, Reincarnation, the Antichrist...

5 out of 5 stars Watch This Movie and Sleep Better At Night .......2007-06-12

This movie offers the best tongue and cheek commentary on the absurdities of war. I am sure this movie has been heavily "borrowed" from by Hollywood. The "Survival Kit Content Check" scene reminded me alot about the more recent "duct tape your windows" survival tactics. If you believe that the end of the world will come in a flash of light, this movie will validate you.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Sellers heads up a great cast.......2007-06-08

Peter Sellers heads up a great cast in a very funny movie. Worth having in your Peter Sellers collection!

Clint Eastwood (making his very assured directorial debut) is a poetry-spouting stud-muffin DJ stalked by a maniacally amorous fan after a misguided one-night stand in this enjoyably schlocky, undeniably effective film about good intentions gone murderously wacky. Although many of the very '70s trappings presented here may ultimately be too dated to be taken seriously (including a very self-indulgent jazz number and a hilariously gooey seduction number between Eastwood and Donna Mills), the core premise of infatuation taken out of bounds remains uncomfortably plausible--and was influential enough to be appropriated by one of the biggest hits of the '80s. (Here's a hint--it starred Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, and a very unfortunate bunny rabbit). A well-staged and occasionally very frightening thriller worth watching for Jessica Walter's peerlessly unhinged performance alone. Frequent Eastwood collaborator Don Siegel (director of Dirty Harry, Coogan's Bluff, and The Beguiled, to name but a few) has a nice cameo as Murphy, the mustachioed, chess-playing bartender. --Andrew Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Play Misty For Me.......2007-05-07

Play Misty for Me A Good movie for an early 1970's suspense/thriller. By today's vstandards it would be considered "sappy and predictable". Clint Eastwood does a grat job playing a DJ in the early 1970's and Jessica Walter does a great job of playing an obseesed stalker.

Good movie if you want to see Clint Eastwood play something other than a cop or cowboy.

5 out of 5 stars The Originals Are Always the Best........2007-04-02

In an age when Hollywood can seem to do nothing original, and the Silver Screen is awash with remakes, it's nice to go back and revisit the artistry of which the film industry has made hash.

A tense psychological thriller, Play Misty for Me is the template from which the likes of Fatal Attraction sprang.

Clint Eastwood plays a terminally cool yet sensitive late night jazz DJ who, while estranged from girlfriend Donna Mills, has a one night stand with Jessica Walter.

As her obsession grows, her violent emotions manifest themselves first against herself in a manipulative suicide attempt, and then against the others in Eastwood's life.

Edgy, hard, and oh, so seventies, the tension ramps smoothly with Walter's character's escalating psychosis until the final scene where bloodied and exhausted, a single punch to the face sends Walter through a french door, and over the edge of a terrace to fall to the cold Pacific below.

Clint Eastwood as actor and director does a good job of making the characters believable and sympathetic. Bravo.

Jim Bob says - Spend the money; it's worth a night in a darkened living room with a bowl of popcorn, wondering whether or not your ex-girlfriend really meant what she said when you dumped her.

4 out of 5 stars An oldie - but a GOODIE!.......2007-02-06

Good "stalker" flick. Forerunner of Basic Instinct. This movie is really
"dated" in terms of dress & hair & music, but it is worth viewing for the performances of the young Clint Eastwood, Jessica Walter and Donna Mills.
This is one of my all-time favorite "rainy afternoon" movies!

4 out of 5 stars Wears well.......2007-01-10

I first saw this movie on release as a teenager, and thought it was a great scary movie. The main reason I bought it now was to get a hold of the great Jerry Mulligan soundtrack. The whole family have enjoyed the film now, and leaving out the 70's gear and hairstyles, its a great thriller.

5 out of 5 stars Some people won't take "no" for an answer.......2006-10-22

In this 1971 thriller (a directorial debut for Clint Eastwood), a California radio DJ, Dave Garver (Eastwood) finds himself stalked by an obsessed, crazed fan, Evelyn (Jessica Walter), with whom he has had a one-night stand. She makes his life a living hell--showing up at his home in the middle of the night, waiting for him outside his favorite hangout, and even ruining an opportunity-making business lunch for him. Now, this is not a woman who can't take "no" for an answer. She WON'T take "no" for an answer. And this isn't just a movie. There are real-life instances of "Play Misty for Me". As a matter of fact, "Misty" was based on a story by Universal Studios secretary Jo Heims about a friend of hers who was a stalker in the same vein as Evelyn.

Evelyn tells Dave that she loves him, but what she's feeling isn't love--it's obsession. Real love means respecting someone's space and privacy. And sometimes, it means taking "no" for an answer.

This terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel was directed by shock maestro Brian De Palma for maximum, no-holds-barred effect. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the beleaguered daughter of a religious kook (Piper Laurie) and a social outcast tormented by her cruel, insensitive classmates. When her rage turns into telekinetic powers, however, school's out in every sense of the word. De Palma's horrific climax in a school gym lingers forever in the memory, though the film is also built upon Spacek's remarkable performance and Piper Laurie's outlandishly creepy one. John Travolta has a small part as a thug, De Palma's future wife, Nancy Allen, is his girlfriend, and Amy Irving makes her screen debut as one of the girls giving Carrie a hard time. --Tom Keogh

Description

Based on the best-selling Stephen King novel, Carrie "catches the mind, shakes it and refuses to let it go" (Time)! Starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie (in OscarÂ(r)-nominated* performances), John Travolta and Amy Irving, this ultimate revenge fantasy is "absolutely spellbinding" (Roger Ebert), "outrageously witty" (Los Angeles Times) and one of the all-time great horror classics! At the center of the terror is Carrie (Spacek), a tortured high-school misfit with no confidence, no friends...and no idea about the extent of her secret powers of telekinesis. But when her psychotic mother and sadistic classmates finally go too far, the once-shy teen becomes an unrestrained, vengeance-seeking powerhouse who, with the help of her 'special gift,' causes all hell to break loose in a famed cinematic frenzy of blood, fire and brimstone! *1976: Spacek, Actress; Laurie, Supporting Actress

5 out of 5 stars Carrie.......2007-07-03

Based on Stephen King's book, this horror outing finds director de Palma at his twisted best. Spacek is perfect as the diminutive blonde bombshell set to detonate, Laurie causes involuntary shudders playing Carrie's deranged Mom, and you can't wait to see all those nasty adolescents at school get what's coming to them.( This group includes future stars John Travolta, Nancy Allen and Amy Irving). The concluding prom scene is one of the great sequences in all horror films. An inspired choice for Halloween.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC MUST HAVE MOVIE.......2007-07-01

I accidentally bought the re-make version of this movie shopping one evening at Circuit City. I was livid! I immediately ordered the original and forgot just how good it was. Carrie is one of those movies you cna watch over and over again. The acting is superb and even though you know what will happen - it's good each and every time. Sissy Spacek never ages and John Travolta truly shows his acting ability. This is one of my top 5 movies of all times.

5 out of 5 stars Eve Was Weak!.......2007-06-21

Stephen King's first big hit comes to the big screen, and thirty years later it has morphed into something else. Stephen King created Carrie thanks to a few happenstances. He was working for a laundry service when one day they were in a women's locker room, and he saw the dispense of feminine hygiene products. He asked someone what it was, a coworker told him. He had just read an article about telekinisis, and that night he went home and wrote the first scene of Carrie, when she gets her period in the shower and it awakens the power within her. He threw it away, but a few days later he came home to find his wife, Tabitha, had dug it out of the trash. When she asked if he had writen this, he said it was just an idea he'd had but didn't like it. Per her insistance, he went on to write more. Tabitha told him "No this is good, you've got something here." Tabitha helped him, as it was a story about girl stuff. He based Carrie on the two ugliest girls he knew growing up, and her mother around a devoutly religious woman he worked with who he always wondered what her home life was like. It was submitted and published, and Stephen King had his first big hit. And, the rest is history.

Carrie is the story of a squelched, nervous outcast. It takes place in the most horrifying of places, high school. Pushed around, teased relentlessly, and made to feel the butt of every joke, Carrie is trapped between the laughter of her peers and the heavy handed world of her mother's religious beliefs. She's odd, afraid, nervous. Then, one day, when the late bloomer reaches maturity right in the middle of the gym locker room shower and made a fool of by the other girls, the power is awakened within her. Suddenly she has the power to think and effect people. When that mean boy down the street harasses her on his bike, she throws him an angry glare and he falls off his bike. When in the second half, one of the girls from the locker room, Sue Snell, feels guilty about her behavior, she does something completely out of character for a "popular girl". SHe not only feels guilty, but asks her boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom to make up for it. Her boyfriend Tommy, the handsome, equally popular all American nice guy agrees, and they go to the prom. Carrie, in the one and only time she ever had a real date, looked pretty as a picture, and is even voted queen, is subjected to the ultimate humiliation when the queen bee and her legion of thugs dump pig blood on her. Carrie uses her telekinetic powers to take out her revenge, and burns down the town, killing hundreds in her path.

Why is this such a great story? Because it speaks to each and every one of us on some level. Rebelling against the old world parent, lashing out at teachers who were too meddlesome or ignorant. Transforming from an ugly ducking into a swan, and the handsome prince comes riding in a white horse to take us to his enchanted kingdom (in this case, the prom). Having hope that you can break out of your social mold, that you too can be everything you secretly wanted to be. And when the final insult comes, the one that breaks you, the one that you can't just turn the other cheek this time, you can kill them all with your secret power that you always wished you had.

This was a long time ago, and it shows. Political correctness has overtaken us (the bullying aspect that might have lead Carrie to mow everyone down with an assult riffle if she didn't have the power), fashion has changed, etc. And the shrillness of the acting, corny, antiquated special effects make it just as campy rather than a serious drama / horror now (thanks mostly to Mrs. White played hilariously by Piper Laurie). And yet, add the element of the fanatic mother who is really REALLY crazy (and happened to put all her crazy energies into Christianity rather than the bottle, self mutilation, or promiscuity) yet somehow right all along about people really gives us something to think about in the end. A timeless classic.

5 out of 5 stars You can't just look at this as a horror movie anymore.......2007-06-15

This is one of my favorite films. If you've never seen it how lucky you are to still have it ahead of you! If you haven't seen it for years, and remember it as just a dumb teen horror movie, you have the pleasure of discovering how well made and acted it is.

I was one of those who just thought this was a dumb teen horror movie, and was thus surprised when it was the first film we studied in one of my college film courses. Learning how deftly layered and brilliantly directed this movie is was in large part my first awakening to how interesting and well-done horror and other dismissed genres can be.

Although this film was considered horror when it came out, now, more than 20 years later, I think you have to look at it as more of a macabre tragic drama, because certainly no one will be scared by it. Many on the IMDb complain that "nothing happens" in the first hour, which I blame on its continuing place in the "horror" genre. Unfortunately, those people are missing all of the character development and thematic content that makes the ending so moving to those who have followed it.

The film is unflinching in its portrayal of female jealousy and sublimated sexual rage. The appearance of Carrie's powers coincides with her first period, i.e. the onset of sexual maturity. The following events are all about sexual attraction and jealousy, following Carrie's emergence as a woman, the dynamics of the other girls at school and their sexual/romantic intrigues, and the White family's bizarre sexual mores. The drama with the girls at school is all about dates and sex and going to the prom. Carrie's sympathetic gym teacher tries to get her to wear makeup and pay more attention to her hair. Meanwhile, Carrie's mother equates her menstruation with acceptance of sin, and later refers to her breasts as "dirty pillows." Once you start to look at it this way, you'll be surprised at the number of incidents and bits of dialogue that relate to this theme, and how carefully focused the entire screenplay is.

Sissy Spacek's performance really is multi-layered and heartbreaking, and gets better the more you get into the film. The early scenes at the prom, when you see her trying her best to get out of her shell, and how scared she is of being hurt, are all the more tragic knowing what is going to happen to her a few minutes later. When she is announced as Prom Queen, you see from the look on her face that she has finally come to believe that she has been accepted and liked. That the image of her walking silently through the burning school still remains so iconic and startlingly creepy is testament to her performance and this film's power.

The other amazing thing is DePalma's direction. The sequence beginning with the announcement of Carrie as Prom Queen is a masterpiece of building tension -- notice the music and editing as the sequence gathers speed, culminating with the spilling of the blood. You will also notice that this entire sequence is dialogue-free. It is so tight, audacious and over-the-top that you have to admire it. I know DePalma later expressed regret over the split screen effect, but I remember how effective it was when I first saw the film -- it left me feeling like so much is happening at once that you couldn't possibly take it all in. It's really overwhelming and distancing at the same time -- as opposed to most horror films that try to bring viewers INTO the terror.

The mere fact that this movie is still around almost 25 years later is a testament to its brilliance. It is much more respected now than when it first came out-- in part I think because the "horror" label worked against it. Look at the horror aspects the way they should be -- as a metaphor-- and you'll start to get into it. The closer you look the better it becomes.

Morgan Fairchild made her screen debut in this ridiculous and insulting film as a television newswoman under constant sexual threat from a "fan" (Andrew Stevens). The lame script finds Fairchild's character scared as long as she feels powerless to this predator's threats, but capable of defending herself by--take a deep breath here--turning the tables and coming on to him. The climactic scene, in which Fairchild stops a rape by undoing the guy's pants while he turns into a quivering little boy, is not only absurd in its staging but irresponsible on every level. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Morgan gets nude, Stevens acts weird and not much else.......2007-03-27

This "thriller" is a waste of time unless(and yes i did enjoy them) you want to see Morgan Fairchild nude! the only other "good" thing in this mess is a fine job by Andrew Stevens as the "stalker" who looks nice and has women chasing him. You feel for this man who has lost his grip on reality and hope that the young assistant who loves him can reach him and pull him back from his madness. I don't think that making the victim seem so snotty and crass and the sicko so likeable is what these movies are suppose to do.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Anchor Bay.......2007-02-16

I LOVE this movie, I was in high school when this came out and the theater was packed opening night due to the fact that Morgan 'bares all' and she did! But I loved the movie even though it was campy at the time it came out, and its even more camp now. Speaking of camp, I love Colleen Camp in this film, the wisecraking best friend was a perfect role for her I only wish that her character would have been expanded to the end of the film. I would like to have seen her come in and battle Derek at the end instead of his mousy assisant. My other compliant has always been Michael Sarrizan, who has to be the worst actor ever to grace the screen, in fact the roles should have been reversed, Michael should have played Derek and Andrew should have been Brandon, Those are my only two complaints about the story, but the campy long held camara shots of Morgan in various stages of fear and looking great are just to funny, this is early 80's camp at its best.... Now Finally a quality DVD of the film. Thanks Anchor Bay

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Anchor Bay!.......2007-01-24

I was happy and surprised to see "The Seduction" finally released on DVD! I have the 1985 Media Video release of this movie, and this Anchor Bay DVD version blows it away! I didn't realize or remember this movie being filmed in cinemascope. Anchor Bay has cleaned up the picture quality, remastered the soundtrack, and brought it back to it's original glory, in it's original aspect ratio. VHS releases never did the film any justice. There was even an "EP cheapie" version of this movie released back in the '90s. One thing that I've noticed about this film is that the telephone is one of the leading stars of the plot. There is a lot of ringing and screen time devoted to focusing on the phone. The actors seem to be really slow on picking up the phone after it rings a few times too. This is one of the charms of this movie, along with it starring Morgan Fairchild. I think the director was using the phone to build suspence. Nothing like those old AT&T/Western Electric phones to do the trick! There are a variety of them too, from the classic 2500 Traditional, to the Princess phone! Another movie that used this technique was "When A Stranger Calls" from 1980. There are some added features, like a few interviews with the director/producer, and the original movie trailer. There is even a mini reproduction of the movie poster within the keepcase, for a nice added touch. This DVD will not disappoint for fans of Morgan Fairchild, and early '80s b-movie fare. It's been a long-standing fave of mine since 1981!

Jonestown. Decades after the fact, the very mention of the word evokes grim memories of Rev. Jim Jones, his Peoples Temple, and the horrific suicide of more than 900 followers who accompanied him to Guyana, Jones' self-styled South American Shangri-La. While November 18, 1978--when, following the shooting of California Rep. Leo Ryan (who had come to Jonestown to investigate various allegations about mistreatment of cult members), all those people drank cyanide-laced Kool-Aid--is the obvious focal point, producer-director Stanley Nelson's 90-minute documentary also devotes a good deal of time to Jones' personal history up to and including the founding of the Peoples Temple. Born in Lynn, Indiana, he was inspired by the power and authority of the preachers he witnessed, and was at it himself by his early twenties. His own church was fully integrated (he and his wife adopted two Asian Americans and one African American; the latter, named Jim Jones Jr., is among those interviewed for the film). Services were joyous occasions, more like Baptist revivals than the typical white Christian affair, and Jones' followers seemed genuinely devoted, buying into his snake-oil bit (including fake healings) and willingly forking over 20 percent or more of their incomes to him. But after Jones moved the Temple from sleepy Ukiah, California, to San Francisco, the madness began to set in, and just as an exposé of his more unsavory practices (sexual and otherwise) was about to be published, he hurriedly relocated the whole scene to Guyana. Although Jonestown was virtually a prison camp (the mere thought of leaving was blasphemous), they managed to convince Ryan that it was paradise--until the congressman started getting notes surreptitiously passed to him by members desperate to get out. Chaos quickly ensued, and the film's final moments, in which Jones can be heard exhorting his crazed flock to drink the Kool-Aid, are genuinely harrowing. There is ample footage of Jones himself, along with the recollections of Peoples Temple members (including those very few who survived Jonestown) and others. Deleted scenes and an interview with Nelson highlight the bonus material. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars BEST DOCUMENTARY!!.......2007-06-19

This is the best and most extraordinary documnentary on what happen on Nov.18,1978.showing actual news reel footage of the events and interviews of the real participants not actors recounting their experiences as temple members and life under Jim Jones is truly chilling and shocking!!i like the special feature section where Stanley Clayton describes his escape plan from all the carnage that was surrounding him!!this is not some movie with actors but the real people who were thier!!

4 out of 5 stars "LIFE & DEATH..." - But Mostly Death..........2007-05-26

"JONESTOWN - LIFE AND DEATH OF THE PEOPLES TEMPLE" is a good film about a bad tragedy. Don't expect to have your spirits lifted by this one.

I'm not an authority on, well, anything, really. But I HAVE seen several movies (mostly dramatizations) themed around the Guyana happenstance lately, and I enjoyed most of 'em. But they suffered from poor format quality (due to releases cribbed from fly-by-night companies) and an overall lack of reality, being slightly sensationalized and all. Thusly, I was excited to see this PBS documentary, which is of infinitely better quality, I'd say, than anything else on Jonestown that's available out there.

The main selling point is the reality. If you're in my age bracket and have an interest in the darker elements of human society, one can scarcely do better than the Jonestown case. But it also seems that this event suffers from a sort of negligence in the modern era of crimes and notoriety... most of what is out there is on the printed page only, while volumes of videos and DVDs exist for other notorious public figures. That said, I know some have opined that this doc barely touches the real heart of the matter, but having not actually lived through the time and being intensely curious about it, I personally found "JONESTOWN - LIFE AND DEATH OF THE PEOPLES TEMPLE" to be most satisfying.

Historical accounts are presented via interviews with some of the few survivors (and associated parties), surprisingly well-restored video footage of life and personal stories from the various incarnations of the Peoples Temple (Indiana, California, and finally Guyana), still photographs, and plentiful video and sound clips of the fanatical Jim Jones himself. I found all of this material to be fascinating, especially some of the clips of Jones where his psychotic, megalomaniacal side really shows through. As infamous and horrid as his social experiment ended up, this was a complicated, charismatic, bizarre man who just proves, all over again, that there is no real sense of 'black & white' to be had in the world - everything is shades of gray, some maybe darker and more sinister than others.

People like myself, who are interested in horror movies and the macabre, are often (not always, mind you) drawn to true crime stuff, and as such have a tendency to make wackos like Jones (or Charles Manson, for that matter) into icons of a sort. But "JONESTOWN - LIFE AND DEATH OF THE PEOPLES TEMPLE" doesn't wallow in this type of stuff, and presents a very sad story told by people whose lives were destroyed and loved ones (about 909, total) lost in the awful 'revolutionary suicide' pact cooked up by Jones.

It probably could've been a bit longer, and a couple of the reminiscent moments from old acquaintances of Jones fall into a convenient, predictable "he was a weird kid" category. But it's powerful, emotional, and humanizing... and never degrading. All the while, this docu-pic still remains informative and lurid enough to hold one's attention throughout, and is never boring. A sign in the background of Jones' Guyana pavilion quotes the famous "those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it" adage, and this seems especially prophetic, given the subject matter here and the subsequent Waco, Texas and Heaven's Gate tragedies which occurred in the following decades. Which begs the question: do people ever learn?!

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new to the table.......2007-05-21

The movie is basically following the locations of the church and some developments at each location. Then of course all of them commit suicide - the movie offers no new explanations or new material. A much more detailed focus on "why and how" was expected. Waco - the rules of engagement gets 5/5 - see that one instead.

5 out of 5 stars A Glimpse into the Tragedy of Religion Gone Wrong.......2007-05-06

This is a fascinating and chilling (if too brief) look into the history of Jim Jones and his People's Temple. What it offers beyond mere history, though, is a glimpse into the seductive nature of good turned into evil, through the eyes and words of people who at one time followed and believed in Jones. Most of them acknowledge some sense of strangeness, even psychosis, in the behavior of Jim Jones, but they chose to focus on the good he was doing and the utopian hope he was preaching publicly. And clearly in its early days, the People's Temple WAS doing good, and offering hope and a real sense of community - integrated community - to those who came through the doors. But somewhere, somehow, it all began to go wrong. And yet people averted their eyes, as Jones drifted deeper and deeper into madness and drug his followers with him. This film esposes these issues without rendering any judgment upon them - it reveals the dreams and the hopes that were shattered that November day in 1978 along with all those lives. It is a morality tale for anyone who knows the power and goodness, but also the dark side, of religious faith. I am a Presbyterian pastor, and I would highly, highly recommend this film - as hard as it is to watch at times - for anyone who is interested not just in history, but in the power of faith - a power that can do such good, and yet be used in the wrong hands, for such evil.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't Even Scratch The Surface.......2007-05-03

Stanley Nelson has created a documentary that I assume, many people like. When I watched this film on home video, I immediately wanted my money back. This film doesn't even scratch the surface on Jim Jones. I think it's great that the filmmakers chose to look at The People's Temple as a whole, but they should have delved into the sickness, perversion, and madness of the good reverend.

Jim Jones was a sick man from the get-go. Too many people are painting him as their hero. The fact, is while some took the poison willingly, many were injected with needles, some were shot, and the children were force fed the concotion. Jones was no hero, nor was he a martyr. Hopefully, someone will finally make a documentary that dares to tell the truth.

Originally hatched in 1978 as a short film parody for Saturday Night Live, this expanded, 70-minute mockumentary on a trend-setting quartet of British mop-tops bloomed into one of Eric Idle's better projects outside Monty Python. Taking the career (and hagiography) of the Beatles and inverting them quite nicely, Idle conjures up four doppelgangers who offer the familiar mannerisms but practically none of the intelligence of their models. If that sounds like the same gag that powered This Is Spinal Tap (which emerged six years later), it is, with the crucial difference that Idle's lampoon is precise where Tap was consciously generic.

In telling the saga of the Rutles, Idle (who doubles as earnest narrator and McCartney-esque Rutle Dirk McQuigley) works from a rich and immediately familiar trove of pop lore, and he has a ball revisiting and reinventing milestones from the Fab Four's fabled history. The attention to period detail helps elevate the gags further, but Idle's real secret weapon is Neil Innes, standing in as Ron Nasty, the Rutles' answer to John Lennon: it's Innes who serves as the musical architect for the wonderful Beatles parodies that give All You Need Is Cash a delicious kick, and Innes, a one-time principal in the legendary Bonzo Dog Band, is gifted enough to capture the band's lyricism and energy as well as their shifting sense of style.

With the blessing and on-camera participation of George Harrison, and wry cameos from Mick Jagger and Paul Simon, All You Need Is Cash is a perfect companion to the Beatles' own glorious screen comedies and a great antidote to sanctimonious pop documentaries. --Sam Sutherland

2 out of 5 stars Only a few laughs.......2007-06-16

I enjoy Monty Python and I am a big Beatles fan, so I was surprised I didn't like this movie. Basically, there are only a few laughs, and they weren't specific to the Beatles so it could've been put in any mockumentary. What also disappointed me was there was not much interaction of the Rutles - you don't get to see them talk to each other much, which could've provided many funny moments. The song parodies weren't that funny, either.

What I did like was the visual aspects of the movie - they really did get the look of the Beatles throughout the years pretty accurately. It was also good to see many of the original Saturday Night Live cast and they provided much of the few funny moments in the movie.

If you want to see a funny mockumentary, check out "Spinal Tap" and "Fear of a Black Hat". Both movies have two necessary ingredients that this movie lacked: hilarious banter between the band members and funny lyrics in the songs.

4 out of 5 stars Python meets Spinal Tap.......2007-04-26

This is a wonderful spoof of the Beatles, which deserves a higher reputation than its fairly obscure standing.

Neil Innes is outstanding as 'Nasty' (i.e. Lennon), and of course was also responsible for the wonderful spoof songs ("Let it Rot" "Ouch" "A Hard Days Rut" etc"). Eric Idles presenter is a classic Python type character. The scene at the beginning where the presenter is being filmed from a moving vehicle which gets faster and faster is pure Python.

There are cameo roles for George Harrison, Mick Jagger and Paul Simon. George Harrison isn't playing himself, so you have to look a little harder to spot him.

Along with Spinal Tap (which was made 6 years later) this is the best spoof 'rockumentary'. Its very funny and I recommend it strongly.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies ever made.......2007-04-10

OK, so it helps to know The Beatles inside and out to totally get this movie. Even if you don't, it's still a riot. But if you do know The Beatles, this is perfect. It's the funniest movie I've ever seen.

Idle and Innes hit a grand slam here. Every scene is hilarious, nearly every line is a complete crack-up. The Beatles needed to be spoofed and they gave their blessing for this project. My guess is they even found it funny (though I doubt John liked seeing Nasty's wife portrayed as a Nazi).

The capper is the music. Some of the songs are just brilliant rip-offs, combining two or three elements of three Beatles songs. Example, "Hold My Hand" combines "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the "Eight Days a Week" intro, and "She Loves You." Just priceless.

If you like The Beatles, you'll really like "The Rutles." If you like great comedy, you'll love this. It's a can't-miss classic!

5 out of 5 stars The Rutles........2007-03-09

Saw the Video when it fist came out. It was great then, even better now!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Ruttles - All you Need is Cash.......2007-01-18

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Idle/Innes are in rare form as the dynamic duo lovingly give the Fab Four a Pythonesque makeover. Anyone who love the Beatles and Monty Python MUST own this movie! The interviews alone are worth the price of admission! Mick Jagger.. Paul Simon.. Ron Wood.. (and see if you can spot 'THE' George Harrison). Hats off to Niles Innes for the music - 'spot on'! If you didn't know any better, you'd have thought you'd stumbled onto some old Beatles recordings that were never released to the general public. Tongue firmly planted in cheek! 'Nuff said.

Gordy (David Arquette of the Scream movies) and Sean (Scott Caan of Varsity Blues) are rabid fans of professional wrestling--in particular, white trash champion Jimmy King (Oliver Platt, Funny Bones, Flatliners). But the show's producer Titus Sinclair (Joe Pantoliano, The Matrix) decides it's time for King to lose his crown and allows Diamond Dallas Page (playing himself) and assorted cronies to tromp all over the fallen King. Crestfallen, Gordy and Sean track King down to convince him to take another shot at the big time. Although in the process they discover that King may not be the man they thought he was, their faith never falters. With the training assistance of an old-school wrestler (Martin Landau), they get King back into the ring to face the triple steel cage. Ready to Rumble is clearly aimed at wrestling fans, who will doubtless enjoy numerous professional wrestlers playing themselves, including Goldberg and Sting, as well as the scantily clad Nitro Girls. The movie isn't exactly Shakespeare, but it has a raffish, affable charm. The jokes stick to the basics, such as people being kicked in the groin and nuns singing Van Halen's "Running with the Devil" with their crystalline soprano voices. And what's wrong with that? As a comedy team, Arquette and Caan aren't Abbott and Costello--they're not even Bill and Ted--but they give it their all and you may find them surprisingly engaging. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars More of Pretty Kitty, please..........2006-07-25

Ready to Rumble brings to the screen the story of two down-on-their-luck guys from Lusk, Wyoming, who have a traumatic experience when their hero, a wrestling champion called Jimmy King, loses his title as result of a fixed match. That is when they take it upon themselves to have their king placed back on his throne...
David Arquette, Oliver Platt, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances well.
In short, the music is great, the acting is pretty good, the plot/setting is interesting (great if you are wrestling fan), while the dialogues are average and sometimes below average.
In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will provide for an evening's entertainment. 3.5 Stars

4 out of 5 stars LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-14

5 out of 5 stars Great Wrestling Movie.......2006-03-04

This is a great movie. I loved every moment in this movie. But I wish that Flair and Hogan would have been in this movie same with Nash and Hall and Benoit and Guerrero. Oh Well the story is great I hope in the future that they have the sequel when Kings in WWE or TNA.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly funny.......2006-02-21

This is a very well written film. It's stoopid and sweet and charming and at times really funny. It's got a Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure vibe to it with a little bit of Raising Arizona quirkiness and a few digs at the Rocky genre. It's got wry humor and slapstick--something for everybody.

I stumbled on this buddy movie on TV, and I was hooked within minutes; I'd never heard of it before. The two main characters are so simple and so disarming, you buy right into the plot. Look, it's not a work of art, but it's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours. I had some good laughs.

4 out of 5 stars History Visited briefly........2006-02-21

Due to the Non-Existant brand of WCW, it does show some former Classic WCW wrestlers and a couple Current WWE Wrestlers, so even if you dont like comedies yet enjoy Wrestling, you might wannna check this out.

However if your into both, or even history of wrestling, might actually be the movie for you.

Plus the price on it is decent enough to check it out.

Suicide Killers is a trip to the dark side. This is a place where one Palestinian bomber, checking his stock of guns and grenades as he prepares for his next mission, expresses the hope that his three young children will follow in his footsteps, while another says, "I will not regret it if (the target) is a nursery full of kids." Yet these extraordinary statements are only part of the tale told in Pierre Rehov's 80-minute film, which sheds light not only on terrorists but also on the others in their grim orbit. There are Israelis who survived attacks staged by Hamas; parents of bombers, some bewildered by their sons' deeds, others proud of them; and a few voices of reason, such as a Palestinian in Gaza who says, "You can't build a security (sic) life by blood." There are also scenes from a "summer camp" for kids where "martyr training" is conducted, and, most strikingly, multiple interviews with jailed bombers who failed at their appointed rounds, including a couple of women whose serenity, as Rehov puts it, is more disturbing than their desire to fight. Much of this isn't typical fly on the wall documentary stuff, but direct, intimate contact with the terrorists (including one whose cell wall is draped with a giant Minnie Mouse curtain), often featuring extreme close-ups of their eyes. Along the way, there's plenty of speculation about the motives that drive people to blow themselves up in the hope that they'll take dozens of victims, if not more, with them. One pundit suggests it's pure brainwashing, while another dismisses the bombings as a "cynical tactic… for political ends." Others posit the theory that the repressive separation of the sexes in strict Muslim society has so frustrated some men that they're willing to die young in order to reach paradise, where they'll be surrounded by 72 virgins. And, of course, there's virulent anti-Semitism, and hatred of Israel and its "brutal occupation" of Palestinian territory. At times, the terrorists' endless rhetoric comes off as posturing. But then you see the bloody results of their handiwork, and when you hear them proclaim their willingness, eagerness even, to get another chance to kill, you know they're deadly serious. The DVD features include additional scenes, further interviews, and more. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Riveting.......2007-06-08

This documentary examined the psychological, religious, and economic factors that foment suicide killers, both men and women. By interviewing prisoners who had attempted suicide bombings, the director was able to explore their motivations for wanting to take their own lives as well as others. In addition, psychologists, cultural critics, and religious leaders also weighed in. These multiple perspectives helped overthrow the simple explanations and easy assumptions that politicians and journalists sometimes throw around. It was a chilling, yet thought provoking, documentary.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking film.......2007-05-16

This was an amazing film that just left me breathless at the end. It gets into the minds of a lot of people who are in one way or another associated with suicide bombing missions, from the actual men and women who have attempted suicide bombing missions and those in training, to their victims, their families, their trainers, even children training for such missions. It is a must see for anyone interested in world politics, regardless of their politics.

For me, the most powerful parts of the film were the interviews with families who were proud of the "martyrs" in their family. To me, it demonstrated the insanity of the idea of suicide missions (not that I really needed that to be reinforced) while also showing the very real human suffering experienced by many of these people.

I'm sure many people will come away from this film with the feeling that we need to redouble our efforts to kill all Muslims before they can become terrorists and, in a way, I can see how they might feel that way, though I strongly and vehemently disagree. The people in this film are very determined and absolutely convinced that what they are doing is good and justified and convincing them otherwise is a very daunting task. However, we need to remember that the majority of Muslims do not think this way (regardless of what many people would lead us to believe) and, indeed, several Muslims and Palestinians interviewed for the film condemn the practice of suicide bombing. For me, the film just reaffirmed for me that we absolutely need to find a better way to address the rift between Muslim cultures and western civilization other than an endless, continuous cycle of violence. As difficult (indeed, seemingly impossible) as it will undoubtedly will be, we need to find a way, as human beings, to create some kind of understanding between our cultures. Otherwise, we will just see more and more violence and it will never end until we cause our own extinction.

Anyway, great film. Go see it or buy it, watch it, share it and discuss it.

4 out of 5 stars In their own words.......2007-05-16

This is a very intimate account of aims and motivations of suicide bombers in their own words. Overall, the producer manages to fade into the background and let the interviewed prisoners express their own belief that lead them to what they do. Still, some freudian nonsense and postmodernist narrative manages to creep in through the opinions of "experts": their guns are the phallic expression of their sexual frustration, the moment of suicide is the orgasmic passage to afterlife, women blow themselves up as a way of feminist revolt. Again and again I kept saying, "Cut the crap and let them talk!".

Also, I noticed some omissions in the English subtitles over Arabic interviews. For examples, one particularly young prisoner talks about his expectation of meeting the past prophets, saints and marrying 70+ virgins after he becomes a martyr. The subtitle omits the prophets and saints. There seems to be many other incorrect translations. One still gets the message, though.

5 out of 5 stars Only the Devil can delude people that well.......2007-05-12

Extraordinary. This documentary really takes you into the living grounds of these people. We are in a search to find the reasons why some Muslims want to die as martyrs killing as many Jews (or infidels) as possible. 80 minutes, plus some short -but good- extras.

Muslims -and especially Palestinian Muslims- should ask themselves if any of their national leaders has followed through with their preaching. Have any of their Mullahs, for that matter, died martyrs as they so fervently encourage others to do? Of course not. They all die in their beds, of old age, and rich as the good capitalists they are. This documentary interviews the very terrorists that failed to die in their blasts, also psychiatrists, Israeli victims, and even some Palestinian who questions the worthiness of this bloody deal they are into. It's comprehensive and riveting. The focus is not so much on the political issue as on the human level. Just how can people, normal people, even decent people, be willing to commit these atrocities? This is what we are trying to understand.

My conclusion is that they have been deceived. They honestly seem to believe that they are doing the right thing, simply because the god they believe in tells them so, and he's got to be right. Thus the devil uses even the most honest and humble people for his evil purposes. The devil, through his radical islamist leaders, has taken good care that their muslim populations stay in poverty. Living in daily anguish, poverty and sexual repression, what are the things life can offer to them? What can they loose? The promise in the Coran of 72 virgins is self-explanatory of why so many young kids want to die quickly and have their dreams come true. Their descriptions of the promised heaven are rather (as one interviewee mentions) more like desciptions of America, discounting the 72 virgins (and maybe even not discounting them). Another explanation that helps us digest this giant delusion is the sadic use of guns as substitute phallic organs, erect and ready. If you are asking how come even young girls and mothers do this, you may get a good idea seeing how gloomy their earthly prospects are. Their lack of equal rights is just an understatement, as you may imagine.

The best remedy for this craziness -aside from the Lord bringing some Light into their heads- is jobs and prosperity, so they would really have something to distract their brainwashed minds with, something not so deathly. Love? Oh, they have love alright. This is one of the illuminating things one learns watching this film: they are not hateful or perverted people, on the contrary, they are easy to love. But they have made a deal with the wrong person, they've sold their souls to the great Liar. May the Lord pour his lifegiving love on all of us, the killers and the victims. "Greater love has no one than this, that to lay down one's life for his friends." 1 John 14:13.

Our greatest commandment is not to kill the infidel, it is "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind," AND "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Matthew 22:37-39. His Word also says: "love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you and persecute you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you" Matthew 5:44. Who but the Devil would want them to do just the opposite?

5 out of 5 stars "Suicide Killers" Exposes the Rage and Frustration of the Arab World.......2007-05-06

The nihilist interpretation of Islam is centered in the Arab social milieu. "Suicide Killers" allows the adherents of this radical movement to speak for themselves. Many of them are obviously sexually frustrated and existentially unable to deal with the modern era---which is dominated by the values and successes of the hated West. They are losers, but how can this be? Aren't these Muslim men and women God's favorites? If so, have they not been cheated by Jews and other infidels? How can outsiders be more accomplished than the faithful? What explains the logical inconsistences between their faith system and reality? Who is to be blamed for this sad state of affairs?

Many of those interviewed have yet to reach their twentieth birthday. The full grown adults, however, also come across as intellectually shallow, immature, and suffering from low self esteem. It soon becomes clear why it was so easy to entice them to volunteer for a suicide bombing operation. No, they are not mere victims of alleged Western imperialism. Their difficulties far transcend the lazy and incomplete perspective of Marxist ideology. A number of them seem gentle and inoffensive. They don't appear even slightly threatening. I am sure of this: you will not be able to look away from the screen. "Suicide Killers" will demand your full attention. You must see this movie. Order a copy today. You will not be disappointed.

A tense psychological thriller, Apartment Zero concerns the intertwining of a loner, film buff Colin Firth (The English Patient) and his new mysterious boarder (Hart Bochner) in present-day Argentina. The new roommate is enigmatic and outgoing, befriending everyone that the poor loner could not. But Firth soon suspects a connection between his boarder's appearance and the reports of bodies in the streets murdered for political reasons.

The heart of the film lies in the increasingly bizarre relationship that develops between the two opposites, breeding the seeds of mistrust. An original and offbeat noir-type drama, the film, cowritten by David Koepp (Jurassic Park), proceeds at a slow and deliberate pace, gradually drawing the viewer deeper into the intrigue and isolation of Firth's tortured soul. Some genuinely creepy moments and an all-around macabre mystery make this film worthwhile viewing for mystery fans everywhere. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars Great Re-release.......2007-04-11

This is a slightly different cut than the original DVD/VHS release so that was interesting to see.

But the great thing about this DVD is the bonus commentary tracks; the first by director Martin Donovan and the other with Steven Soderbergh interviewing screenwriter David Koepp.

Informative and highly entertaining.

Awesome video with a Hot guy to boot. It builds up the mystery of this stranger only to drop the bomb in the end. This one should have been a hit.

It is great to see many sides of Colin Firth in this one. To be this neurotic and twisted reminds me of Hannibal Lecter.
