Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness. Although it was roundly criticized as a poor man's rip-off of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Da Vinci Code, it's entertaining on its own ludicrous terms, and Nicolas Cage proves once again that one actor's infectious enthusiasm can compensate for a multitude of movie sins. The contrived plot involves Cage's present-day quest for the ancient treasure of the Knights Templar, kept secret through the ages by Freemasons past and present. Finding the treasure requires the theft of the Declaration of Independence (there are crucial treasure clues on the back, of course!), so you can add "caper comedy" to this Jerry Bruckheimer production's multi-genre appeal. Nobody will ever accuse director Jon Turtletaub of artistic ambition, but you've got to admit he serves up an enjoyable dose of PG-rated entertainment, full of musty clues, skeletons, deep tunnels, and harmless adventure in the old-school tradition. It's a load of hokum, but it's fun hokum, and that makes all the difference. --Jeff Shannon

Description

From Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, and Jon Turteltaub, director of PHENOMENON, comes NATIONAL TREASURE. It's the thrilling, edge-of-your-seat adventure starring Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage (1995 Best Actor, LEAVING LAS VEGAS) as Benjamin Franklin Gates. Ever since he was a boy, Gates has been obsessed with finding the legendary Knights Templar Treasure, the greatest fortune known to man. As Gates tries to find and decipher ancient riddles that will lead him to it, he's dogged by a ruthless enemy (Sean Bean, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) who wants the riches for himself. Now in a race against time, Gates must steal one of America's most sacred and guarded documents -- the Declaration of Independence -- or let it, and a key clue to the mystery, fall into dangerous hands. Heart-pounding chases, close calls, and the FBI turn Gates's quest into a high-stakes crime caper and the most exciting treasure hunt you've ever experienced.

1 out of 5 stars A horribly boring movie.......2007-06-30

"National Treasure" is a horrible movie. I knew within the first 60 seconds of watching that it was hokey and cliche, but I was willing to sit through it if it was at least entertaining. It wasn't. The one redeeming quality the movie could have had was the clues to the treasure. Give the audience something to guess at. But the clues turned out to be so obscure and hidden in meaning that they might as well been written in a foreign language.

There are alot of good reviews for this movie for some reason. But when you watch "National Treasure", as I know you will, remember my words. You will at first feel disgusted by the awful acting, then betrayed by the cliche action scenes that you have seen a hundred times before. A strange sensation will creep through your body, like you are slowly dying. But don't worry, this is only extreme boredom. You'll hope that the movie will redeem itself and begin to be entertaining, but it won't. After what seems like an enternity, 2 hours and 11 minutes will roll by, and then you can think "Boy, that one reviewer sure was right. This move was awful!".

Don't say you weren't warned.

4 out of 5 stars Is it a history lesson? Perhaps not. An enjoyable film...definitely!.......2007-06-17

I just wrote a review for the horrendous "Ghost Rider," in which I mentioned "National Treasure" as an example of a recent Cage film that didn't deserve the negative criticism it received (in contrast to the deservedly-dogged "Ghost Rider"), and was thus inspired to write a review in defense of "National Treasure." As I have read from other reviews here, most people agree that while the film isn't a history lesson, it's a darn good time at the movies, and it should have been rated by critics by such. It's a popcorn flick, pure and simple, and in that context, it works flawlessly. It's tremendously entertaining, and it accomplishes that goal while being family-friendly (PG). The thing that always makes me laugh regarding most "critics" of film is that their reviews are essentially little more than a paragraph attempting to display the wit, knowledge, and general intelligence they believe they possess; they're in such constant defense of these self-inflated traits that they destroy any picture with a smidgeon of disregard for historical accuracy, while forgetting that movies are created, above all else, to entertain (unless they're labeled "documentaries"). Do we care whether or not the founding fathers and the freemasons could have feasibly put an invisible map on the back of the Declaration of Independence? Should we be more concerned with whether or not the idea is even logistically fathomable or if the picture is entertaining? For my money, I want to see the entertaining picture (and so does 99% of the population)...and this is what the majority of critics fail to admit, in my opinion, in vigorously defending their "intelligence" in their "reviews." If I wanted to get out of work on a Friday to go and watch a depressing, miserable film with zero entertainment value simply because it happens to be historically accurate (hence, lacking sex appeal), I'd be on the watch for the sequel to "The Fog of War." However, I pay to see movies to be taken out of reality, and to have fun...just like everybody else, ultimately. I'm not ashamed to admit that I love this film, nor should the critics that publicly slandered it while probably watching it on a weekly basis in the privacy of their homes. Thus, I highly recommend it to any fan of, well, enjoying themselves via the watching of film, and I'd state that proof of the points I've made in this review will be made evident via the box office receipts of the upcoming sequel. I'll be first in line, and so will the critics!

5 out of 5 stars An Action Packed Adventure.......2007-05-21

National Treasure is one of the premier movies ever. Beautifully produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Junction Entertainment, and Saturn Films this movie, which was released on November 19, 2004, brought in 338 million dollars in the worldwide box office. The movie was rated PG because of action violence and some scary images. Filming for the movie was spectacularly completed on location at many of the historical sites where the story took place, the acting was superb, and the running time of 131 minutes provides plenty of entertainment. Why not watch it today?

When Benjamin Franklin Gates was young his grandfather told him a story that would change his life. Intently Ben listened as his Grandfather told him of a massive, ancient mysterious treasure, which had been fought over for centuries. The treasure had vanished. Feeling that because the treasure was too valuable, it was too great for one man to have, a group called the Freemasons hid the treasure leaving behind a series of clues to its location. In 1832 the last remaining signer of the Declaration of Independence was about to die, and with him the last clue would die, but just before he died he told the clue to his stable boy Tom Gates. The clue that said, "The secret lies with Charlotte," was passed down from generation to generation in the Gates family and each had spent years of their lives searching for the treasure without success until, finally Ben began searching. The treasure was like a needle in a haystack but Ben devoted his life to finding it.

Quickly Ben found a ship, which was named Charlotte, trapped north of the Arctic Circle. Although the treasure was not aboard the ship Ben easily discovered the next clue. After he understood the clue Ben realized that his treasure hunting was over because the map he would need was hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independence in invisible ink. Knowing that it was not possible to get his hands on the Declaration, Ben was ready to give up. His colleague did not agree. Ian Howe who had come along to help Ben decided that he would steal the Declaration, but when Ben would not go through with it he trapped Ben and his friend Riley Poole in the ship which was full of burning gunpowder. After Ben and Riley survived the exploding ship they went to the government to warn them that the Declaration was going to be stolen, but they were assured that the priceless document was safe.

When Ben was unable to convince the government that the Declaration was in danger he realized that the only way to keep the document safe was to steal it himself. He knew it was wrong. He knew it was impossible. He knew it was insane. Stealing the Declaration was not going to be easy so Ben and Riley carefully planned out each step as they prepared for their impossible mission. Unlike Ben, who was planning a stealth mission to steal the document, Ian and his disreputable friends were planning to use force to reach the Declaration. Quickly Ben made his way to the Declaration of Independence but because of Ian's seemingly endless resources he was right behind him. Who would claim the treasure and who would be left behind? One thing is sure, reaching the Declaration was only the beginning of Ben's dangerous journey to the treasure.

Acting in National Treasure is brilliantly done by many great actors including Nicholas Cage who played the part of Ben. The director of the extraordinary film was Jon Turtletaub. National Treasure is a must see movie that will be enjoyed again and again.

5 out of 5 stars National Treasure.......2007-05-07

National Treasure (Full Screen Edition)An Awesome movie for those who enjoy treasure hunting movies as well action/ suspense movies. Nicolas Cage does an excellent job as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a descendant of a family obssessed with finding a lost treasure connected with history. Sean Bean does an excellent job of playing the man obssessed with finding and keeping the treasure, while Nicolas Cage , predictably, plays the one who lives up to the mandate and turns the treasure over the entire world.

Well worth watching with all of the twists and suspense involved in the plot.

3 out of 5 stars An Amusement Park Ride.......2007-05-07

"National Treasure" isn't a bad movie. It's just one of those productions calculated to hit every predictable result in its target audience, as polished and hermetically sealed as the fabled treasure its characters seek. Nicholas Cage, who long ago entertained me somehow in "Valley Girl" and "Raising Arizona," turns in his requisite blank performance as Benjamin Franklin Gates, the last, we're told, of a family of well-to-do, toupeed kooks obsessed with finding the treasure of colonial Free Masons. Perhaps disturbingly, the women of the family are long gone, leaving first Christopher Plummer and then Jon Voight to impart wisdom in their off-kilter ways, though the love interest played by the Keira Knightly-ish (herself rather Winona Ryder-ish) Diana Kruger does her chilly best to keep the boys honest. When Gates is double-crossed by Bond wannabe Sean Bean, things get tense, first as the ex-partners each devise a robbery of the Declaration of Independence and later, when the film gets inspiration from the Indiana Jones series in what looks like the next attraction at Disney World. Director Jon Turteltaub keeps things moving at a brisk pace, helped by a percussive, familiar electronic score, which is good considering the story mostly consists of standard chases and a rundown of clues that seems right out of "Scooby Doo." The mystery itself is as convoluted as they come - you'll give up trying to keep track of things -- though the location shooting, especially in Philadelphia, manages to capture the majesty of America's wonderful historical locations. Supporting efforts from Harvey Keitel, as a tired FBI agent, are largely wasted, though a lot less of Justin Bartha, as the annoying computer nerd, would have been welcome. It really deserves three and a half stars, but four just wouldn't be accurate.

Actors Jean Reno and Christian Clavier, along with director Jean-Marie Poiré, were the creative team behind The Visitors, a French comedy from the early 1990s that was a massive hit in its native land and a cult favorite in America. Enthusiastically compared by some to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Visitors concerns a time-traveling, medieval knight and his lowly servant, both lost in the 20th century and both shocked by the discovery of their descendants' reversal of fortunes. The film works not only as a nutty bit of slapstick, but as a cheeky satire about class conflict. The Visitors deserves its admirers, but it doesn't deserve Just Visiting, an oddly inappropriate remake featuring the same cast and director, all of whom are undercut by an annoyingly sentimental spin on the original story. This time, Reno and Clavier inexplicably end up in a modern-day U.S. instead of France, and the lure of freedom for Clavier's downtrodden character is tied up not in economics but in his attachment to a fetching neighbor. Blame cowriter John Hughes (Home Alone) for turning something that was once sharp into something dull and sticky. With Christina Applegate, Malcolm McDowell. --Tom Keogh

Description

JUST VISITING is one very funny fish-out-of-water comedy the whole family will enjoy. It's 12th century France and Count Thibault of Malfete (Jean Reno, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE) finds his beautiful bride-to-be (Christina Applegate, TV's JESSE) done in by malevolent magic. So he and his loyal servant Andre (Christian Clavier, LES VISITEURS) request the help of a local wizard to right the wrong and bring his beloved back. But the wizardry goes awry and the pair is transported to 21st century Chicago where they meet Thibault's descendant Julia (Applegate) and her scheming fiance. With their timeless values of honor and courage, they wreak hilarious havoc as they foil diabolical plots in modern-day Chicago and try to find their way back home.

5 out of 5 stars European Nobilty, A Peasant And A Beautiful Woman. I Can Relate To That!.......2007-01-22

Every now and then they make a very funny "fish out of water " movie and this is one of them.A member of the Medieval French Nobility and his slave are accidently transported to 21st Century America with hilarious results. Christian Clavier gives a very funny performance which is much beter than anything I have ever seen Peter Sellers do and Ms.Applegate is a delight as always.Tara Reid also looks gorgeous and Malcolm MdDowell gives a hammy but also very funny performance in this film. Watch out for Clavier's intentions when he sees Ms. Reid being mistreated by her boss which had me laughing out loud which is a rarity for me these days when watching a film.

5 out of 5 stars "Time to play......."!.......2006-11-22

This movie takes place in the past, present and future and is great! Interesting story, scary scenes- I liked it better than Hellraiser III. About 10 minutes got cut out of each story-past, present and future by the editors because they felt that horror fans aren't intelligent enough to follow a good, creative storyline. This movie would have been better with the scenes left in. Rent it or buy it. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

1 out of 5 stars 0 STARS: This is pure nonsense........2006-08-19

We got Jason in space and we get Pinhead in space. This is pure nonsense. Words of wisdom to the makers of these sequels: when you start putting horror movie villains in space to kill people, it's time to stop making these movies!!

5 out of 5 stars More Gothic Horror and Pinhead too!.......2006-08-13

Bloodline has a gothic aura that the other hellraiser movies didn't really have. Also Pinhead shows up in this movie more often than any of the other movies. The plot is intricate and interesting and it goes into detail about the making of and the history of the puzzle box. There is gore and blood for all the horror fans and there is suspence and chills. Some parts of this movie has an Anne Rice feel to it and other parts remind me of the second hellraiser movie. If you are a hellraiser fan then you should buy it. If you like horror or suspense then you should at least rent it.

3 out of 5 stars Pinhead in space........2006-06-24

What I don't understand is why horror fans have complained about this sequal when the ones that were released after this were even worse I mean this film is a masterpiece compared to those crappy straight to video sequals Inferno and Hellworld. The film is about the horrifying struggles of a family bloodline who created the puzzle box (thats how I got my nickname hehe) that opens the doors of hell and let the diabolical Pinhead free to wreak havok on earth and then in the 22nd century a scientist in a space station is trying to solve the puzzle and finaly wants to defeat Pinhead and the other cenobites and break the curse that his family has been suffering through. The film shows us the history and background behind the puzzle box that was created by the La Marchant family line beginning in France in the 18th century, the film also introduces a new villian the demonic Angelique which was very nice and interesting it also had a nice amount of gore including a very nasty looking decapatation and the twin cenobites that get there heads screwed on together which was also hilarious so overall the film was not that bad even though it did have some very cheesy and corny moments and some special fx looked bad and outdated I still enjoyed this film alot and I highly recommend this to hellraiser fans.

4 out of 5 stars Bloodline.......2006-04-30

I know a lot of Hellraiser fans give this one a hard time.I actually liked it a lot.It told the entire story of the puzzlebox, not quite a violent as the last one,but still gory, and pinhead had plenty of good lines.Definetly one of my favs.Check out the first four in the series,DONT even waste your time with the last four, they are an insult to the series

4 out of 5 stars An interesting experience.......2006-08-06

I've been a Dragonball fan for a while now, and this has to be the most interesting dragonball movie yet. This brings back the adventurous quality that was found in the "Lost Episodes" of Dragon Ball GT, or the Dragonball series as a whole. Its an enjoyable experience, but the main character, Son Goku (Not the one we all know, his Great great Grandson) is a bit of a wimp, which is disappointing to see.

Overall, if you want a good anime experience, or you just like Dragonball, this movie is worth watching again and again

3 out of 5 stars Make a sequal.......2006-05-30

First of all this isn't a bad movie but it just could have been a lot better. The movie is about Goku J.R the granson of Pan who is a adult now. Pan wants Goku J.R to get stronger and stand up to pepole. However Goku J.R isn't really strong and gets picked on by bullys and gets his stuff stolen. After Pan hears about it she is outraged and tells him to beacome stronger but then she has heart failer and has great chances of diying. Goku J.R decides to save his grandma and goes to find the Dragon Balls to save pan. On the road Goku J.R meets the bully who picked on him after being tricked by a truck driver they seet of to help eachother a meet a lady who lets them stay at her house. But, this lady was really a monster who attacks them but Goku J.R and his friend escape. After being scared to help his friend at a bridge his friend falls after the bridge beacomes lose and dies. Goku J.R is sad but it will take me to long to tell the rest of the movie but the movie dosn't have enough action and a little more bit of drama. This is great if you like drama anmie but if you like action you might want to check out the Dragon Ball GT series. A ok movie but they should make a sequal.

1 out of 5 stars Some legacy.......2005-12-30

This is by far the weakest of the DBZ movies. Hell, I dont even consider this part of DBZ. This the first DBZ movie I'm giving less than a 3. The story takes place 100 years after Baby was defeated. All of the Z fighters have passed on and Pan is the last sayian. She is over 100 years old and has a great, great grandson, Goku Jr. This is where the problem begins. You never find out who his parents or grandparents were. Those must have been some weak ass sayians. And talk about weak Goku Jr. isnt a shadow of what his ancestors were. He's bullied in school and he's even more of a sissy than kid Gohan was. THere is nothin interesting about him or this movie. Nothin about this seems DBZish to me. Add this to your collection only if your a diehard fan and need this. Other than that, this crap screams rental.

1 out of 5 stars Rental..........2005-12-12

I am sorry but this was a somewhat of a disappointment. I wasn't expecting much and i didn't even get that. What i kept wondering was: what happened to Goku jr parents and their parents?...and what happened to the goku jr and vegeta jr that we saw in the future at the end of dragonball GT that was from the future?...this show put more holes and unanswered questions than anything else. *sigh*. For a basic story it delivered its few minutes of entertainment.

Working with a theme and history that's obviously dear to her heart, first-time writer-director Julie Dash's exquisitely alive film chronicles the last days of the Gullah, an Americanized West African people in danger of losing their identity. Dash makes up for some overly schematic dialogue and an occasionally pokey pace with some strong performances (particularly Cora Lee Day as the sternly matriarchal Nana) and an absolutely wonderful visual sense (kudos should also go to her ace cinematographer Arthur Jafa, whose dazzlingly sumptuous imagery surely inspired Jonathan Demme's later Beloved). A rapturously textured, wholly mesmerizing glimpse into the Gullah culture. --Andrew Wright

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing, Haunting Cinematic Tribute to Early 20th Century Gullah Culture.......2007-02-07

"Daughters of the Dust" is truly a cinematic feast for the eyes, and one that has to be savored slowly, metaphorically taking sips from it as if it was a bottle of some elegant vintage wine. Those expecting a fast-paced narrative drama will most surely be disappointed, since the film slowly takes us through the final days of a Gullah family's life on the Sea Islands of North Carolina and Georgia, shortly before most of the family treks north for a new, promised life bereft of time-honored Gullah traditions. Filmmaker - and screenwriter - Julie Dash has rendered a beguiling look at the Peazant's family past and present, as seen through the eyes of the matriarch Nana Peazant (Cora Lee Day in an extremely rich, intense performance, that's truly one of the best in an ensemble cast of fine performances.). There's ample attention paid to African folk wisdom and culture, demonstrating the rich cultural heritage of the Sea Islands' Gullah people, as the Peazant family ponders its future in one final family gathering. Cinematographer Arthur Jafa's camera has recorded this saga in visually sumptuous imagery that is sincerely respectful of Gullah traditions and affectionately pays homage to them. Dash's wonderful film must surely rank as one of the most intriguing cinematic debuts in American cinema, hopefully pointing the way to a new generation of Afro-American filmmakers and others interested in her unique, almost existentalist, means of cinematic storytelling (I might add too that I had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Dash discuss her film here in New York City a few days ago; it was a delightful, inspiring discussion which was both emotionally and intellectually quite rewarding. I might add too, that I had the pleasure of speaking with her afterwards, discovering that we are mutual admirers of the splendid fiction of Octavia Butler, whose unexpected passing last year has deprived both Afro-American literature and literary science fiction of one of their most thoughtful, eloquent voices.).

5 out of 5 stars We Get What We Bring: Be a Guest at the Feast.......2006-08-10

We get what we bring. This principle is brilliantly illustrated in the responses here to "Daughters of Dust," Julie Dash's brilliant and ground-breaking independent film. To dismiss the film is easy, because it uses non-traditional story-telling techniques rather than the ones we are used to in mainstream cinema and popularly received independent films. To receive this film fully takes some time, willingness, effort, and suspension of our usual perception. But, if the viewer can do all that, what a gift Julia Dash and her tribute cast and crew has given us to unwrap.

I lived and worked in Africa for five years and for me, the film so well conveys the African spirit, basic cultural beliefs, sense of wonder (magic), and time that was then transported to the New World. I learned so many things by being with this film and watching the richly detailed accompanying documenting on its making.

Is this easy, pre-digested material? No. Can we afford to dismiss our passionate geniuses in any art form? No. Come to "Daughters of Dust" with a full heart, open mind, and a willingness to digest your own food--so lovingly cooked here.

Janet Riehl, author "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary"

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, exciting, historical and captivating.......2006-08-08

This film by independent filmmaker Julie Dash, shows a fictional portrayal of a family, dominated by their women, in the what would be considered to some as the Gullah South. The family prepares to leave their island place of origin to live on mainland America. As they embark on their departure, the narrator (an unborn child) traces the families story from slavery until the day. Truly an inspirational piece of work, used in many college film classes. This jewel of a film has been kept a secret due to the way cinema is disseminated and the trends in American marketing distribution of film. A must see for teachers of African American history, literature, and film.

1 out of 5 stars The Emperor is Buck Naked.......2006-07-03

I was eagerly anticipating seeing this film, since it received so much praise. To say that I was bitterly disappointed is a sad understatement. Despite the fact that I'm interested in Gullah culture and African-American history in general, this film managed to put me to sleep after the first 15 minutes. No character development, no plot, no coherence (being a Jim Jarmusch fan, I can't even believe I'm writing this). I couldn't figure out the relation of half the characters to each other, or in some cases, even their names, because the dialect is almost unintelligible and there are no subtitles. It's as if you're dropped off in the middle of a strange family on an island, and during the time you stay there, they reveal nothing about themselves. Most student filmmakers could do better. I agree with the other review writer who stated this was one of the worst films they'd ever seen. Rent a Spike Lee film instead, or a PBS show about Gullahs.

3 out of 5 stars Thick but good.......2005-11-16

This would be the second non-abstract movie I've seen without a plot. The other one was Morvern Callar, and I must say this one beats that one out by a long shot because this one actually had symbolism and intended meaning. The loose plot-like structure is about a bunch of African-Americans in 1902 who had lived in isolation on an island for years and were getting ready to go back to Africa, only now they had to deal with issues of the African diaspora and displacement and what it means to their identity.

Very rich visuals are about one of the only things that can really keep your attention going in this film, but if you sit down and force yourself to pay attention you can get a lot out of the dialog as well. It just requires an extra amount of effort to pay off, but once you expend that effort you might just get something out of it.

A little more difficult is the fact that at least four different distinct languages are spoken in this film, with only one moment done with subtitles. The languages I caught besides English were German, French, and Arabic (?) but there may very well have been much more (I think there was a little Spanish and some Latin as well).

I can't really speak much about the technical qualities of the film other than the fact that the symbolism and imagery are amazing and the script is tedious. It's really hard to focus on more than that, unfortunately.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Naschy's better movies.......2006-11-30

This is one of Paul Naschy's better movies thats out there today. Very good film with decent story and Paul Naschy as a werewolf..you cant beat that. If you like cheese in horror this is truly the one to be added to your collection. A true werewolf classic..recommended!!

3 out of 5 stars GOOD OLD SPANISH CHEESE !.......2005-10-14

"CURSE OF THE DEVIL" is a lusty old time spanish werewolf classic! Any real true horror movie fan can appreciate these kind of timeless but out-dated cheesey gems. Perfect for a cold rainy day!

5 out of 5 stars Naschy does it again!.......2004-08-25

You can say what you will about these types of films, but you must admit that Naschy's passion for them, and his werewolf character Waldemar Daminsky, are astounding. He truly loves this genre and it shows. He brings the tragic and romantic elements of horror to his werewolf films and he gives passionate performances that make these movies great fun. I've enjoyed many of Mr Naschy's films and Curse of the Devil is no exception. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE MASTER OF MACABRE CINEMA.......2004-08-19

I've always enjoyed Pual Naschy's work. He's especially good as a werewolf and has been playing that character since 1968 in close to a dozen films. I was eager to see this movie and then I read the reviews on here. One person said this movie had "mindless nudity, sex, cheesy werewolf make up etc." and then I was REALLY eager to see it! I got my grubby little hands on it and popped it in the DVD player and settled back and hit play and WOW! This is a fun movie and a great DVD! The picture quality is superb and there are tons of great extras. The promised "mindless nudity, sex, cheesy werewolf make up etc." are indeed all there too! Naschy gives another wonderful performance and the picture quality of this DVD is far superior to all the poor prints we've been forced to endure in the past. Naschy has established himself as a master of macabre cinema and the high quality presentation of this DVD is a great tribute to the man and a true treat for his fans.

4 out of 5 stars With these kinds of films, you take what you can get........2003-06-11

Once you get past the obvious setbacks of the film: an unconvincing lead, very bad make-up, horribly choreographed violence, and a pretty [weak]ending--there is some enjoyment to be had from Curse of the Devil. To begin with, the story is actually pretty involving and the plot has some tricky forks in it at times. The idea is very good: an arrogant hero pays for that arrogance through a satanic curse, which seemingly is unbeatable. Unfortunately, you have to make the mother of all suspensions of belief to deal with the actual werewolf. Naschy just wasn't suited (bad pun!) for the job. When you do have close-ups of the creature, there just isn't any menace conveyed-merely a frozen make-up expression. When he attacks, it is almost comedic as, for most of the film, he quickly runs on screen and then off before the viewer has a chance to even register what has happened. The opening sequence, if you're able to not laugh at what must be one of the lamest swordfight scenes ever filmed, is kinda cool with the way the pink tint conveys an otherworldly and othertimely atmosphere. The gypsies in the beginning are very convincing in their vengeful rage. All in all, it's not a bad movie. There just aren't that many werewolf movies out there, so Curse of the Devil will come as a happy expansion on what you are already familiar with concerning werewolves of the screen.

4 out of 5 stars This film really isn't all that bad.......2006-04-15

This is definitely not a "great" film, and it rather besmirches Poe and spreads some already biased and untrue "facts" about his private life and personal habits, but the entire film, nevertheless, still has a nice "feeling" about it that I cannot explain. Perhaps it's the gothic touch or something, I'm not quite sure. Anyhow, I always enjoy an offbeat movie with Poe as the subject, and this one was okay by my standards. Not great, but okay. If you like dark horror with a psychological twist, and could call yourself a fan of the gothic or "dark subculture," this movie might prove somewhat entertaining and interesting.

1 out of 5 stars Nevermore!!!.......2004-01-27

This movie is so off target. It wants to be a clever thriller/mystery but there are no thrills and the only mystery is when will this junk end. It was written by William Katt who's claim to fame is the 80's TV show greatest america hero. Unless you thought that was great emmy worthy TV you will not want to see this.

Description

AKA El Barón del Terror. The year is 1661. Baron Vitelius (Abel Salazar) stands accused of consorting with the devil. The penalty: death. Cursing his inquisitors as they burn him at the stake, the Baron's revenge comes 300 years later, in the form of a horrifying fork-tongued incarnation of the Baron, hellbent on devouring the brains of the descendents of those who killed him. As bodies pile up, the police become mystified. Who is draining the skulls of local call-girls and well-to-do banquet-goers alike? And, more importantly, how many flamethrowers will it take to stop him? Brainiac is the supernatural cult classic that has been beloved for decades by fans of spook-show matinees and late-night monster movie marathons.

Famously imported to the U.S. by exploitation icon K. Gordon Murray in the 1960s, Brainiac is at once lurid and loony, unnerving and uproarious, spellbinding and surreal.

CasaNegra is proud to present this milestone of Mexican cinema digitally remastered and uncut for the first time on DVD.
